RFK Jr. Fact Checks Democratic Governor Who Claimed ‘There Is No Fetal Tissue’ in MMR Vaccine

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. fact-checked Pennsylvania Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro after he claimed that there is “no fetal tissue” in the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine, known as MMR.

 

During a Tuesday news conference, Shapiro accused Kennedy of spreading vaccine misinformation and tied it to the deaths of two people in Lancaster County, which he said were “measles-associated,” a claim county officials have since disputed.

 

In a phone call with Kennedy, the governor recounted, “I was very, very blunt with him and I made very clear that his actions and the rhetoric that’s coming from this administration are having a negative impact on communities across America, particularly right here in Pennsylvania.”

 

“There’s real life consequences to spreading misinformation. There are real-life consequences to scaring people and not relying on actual doctors and actual medical professionals to provide unbiased information to parents so that we can make reasonable decisions for our kids,” he added.

 

“Sharing conspiracy theories and misinformation does not help the cause of public health,” Shapiro said.

 

Kennedy responded with a post on X, writing, “At his press conference today, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro accused me of promoting conspiracy theories because I told him, during an earlier telephone conversation, that some Americans had religious objections to the MMR vaccine because it contained fetal tissue. ‘There is no fetal tissue in the MMR,’ he told me.”

 

The post included video testimony from Dr. Stanley Plotkin, who developed the rubella component of the MMR vaccine, according to the Smithsonian.

 

“Plotkin admits to butchering 76 aborted normally developing fetuses, all over three months old, in just one of the many studies that led to the development of his vaccine,” RFK Jr. wrote.

 

“The rubella virus used in MMR-II is grown on the cultured cell line composed of lung tissue from an aborted three-month-old female embryo and listed as ‘WI-38 human diploid lung fibroblasts’ in the ingredients of MMR-II as portions of these cells end up in each vial of MMR II,” Kennedy added.

It's not demoralization, Anon. (((Big Pharma))) has been hooking people on drugs for decades to make a profit. Doctor's make money off of pushing drug use. (((Big Pharma))) makes mad cash off of scripts. They're not even hiding it anymore. Watch any commercial on Roku/Hulu. Every other commercial is an ad telling you to ask your doctor to put you on something new (cos the old ones patent has run out) for some ailment you (allegedly) have.

 

That woman was on a cocktail NO human could survive, healthy or not. If she gets convicted, (((Big Pharma))) blame the mental illness not the drugs. If she is exonerated she still has to stay on the drugs and no one blames the cocktail. Everyone is noticing that she was on multiple scripts from multiple doctors, none of whom worked together. Roman is named after Dr. Nancy Grace Roman (1925–2018), NASA’s first chief of astronomy. She championed space-based observatories that could study the universe above Earth’s hazy atmosphere while making their data broadly available to the scientific community.

Roman will pair a large field of view with crisp infrared vision to scan vast, deep swaths of sky. This flagship mission is designed to help astronomers explore dark matter, dark energy, and planets outside our solar system, called exoplanets.

Since each of Roman’s surveys will sample such a large volume of the cosmos, the mission will also offer practically limitless opportunities for astronomers to conduct a broad range of additional science.

From objects in our outer solar system and exploding stars to growing black holes and galaxies by the billions, very little will be beyond Roman’s reach. Roman’s data will be made public as soon as it’s processed, allowing many teams to analyze it simultaneously.

The observatory will journey a million miles to join Webb at Lagrange point 2.

Roman will orbit 1 million miles away at the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2), the same location as NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.

At L2, gravity from the Sun and Earth works together with an object’s motion around the Sun to hold it roughly in place. This balance will give Roman a relatively steady orbit without using much fuel.

Like Webb, Roman will trace out a large orbit around the actual L2 point — much larger than the Moon’s orbit around Earth — and the two will easily be kept far apart.

The spacecraft carries the names of more than a million people.

This summer, everyone was invited to submit their name to be added to a memory card attached to a plaque on the Roman spacecraft. More than 1.3 million people did so and will have their names carried all the way to L2.

Roman will scan the skies for at least five years.

Roman will have a primary mission lifetime of five years and is designed to support an additional five-year extended mission.

Fuel is expected to be the mission’s life-limiting resource, and while NASA does not currently have an ability to service observatories at L2, Roman is designed to be refuelable.

Two instruments will enable myriad discoveries.

The observatory’s Wide Field Instrument is a 300-megapixel infrared camera that will give Roman the same sharpness (angular resolution) as Hubble but with a field of view at least 100 times larger.

Using this instrument, each Roman image will capture a patch of the sky about 1.5 times bigger than the apparent size of a full Moon.

Roman’s Coronagraph Instrument is designed to demonstrate the most advanced technologies ever flown in space for directly imaging planets around other stars.

It will block the glare from stars and make it possible for scientists to see the faint reflected light from planets in orbit around them, revealing giant worlds that are older, colder, and in closer orbits than the hot, young super-Jupiters direct imaging has mainly revealed so far.

Roman joins an international cohort of teamworking telescopes.

Roman will work in tandem with many other NASA-led and international missions to provide the most complete view of our universe yet.

Roman’s large panoramas will uncover interesting targets that Hubble could follow up on using infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light to offer a more comprehensive view.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope can then use its larger mirror and more powerful vision to deliver even more detailed, ultra-sharp observations. And Roman can view regions around objects Hubble or Webb observe to offer context.

 

Euclid, an ESA (European Space Agency) mission with key contributions from NASA, will observe a larger area of the sky than Roman, though with less detail.

Since their survey areas will overlap, scientists can use Roman’s higher-quality data to apply corrections to Euclid’s, then extend these refinements over Euclid’s much larger area.

 

Scientists can also pair Roman’s infrared data with visible-light observations from the ground-based Vera C. Rubin Observatory, a National Science Foundation–Department of Energy collaboration.

That will allow astronomers to inch closer to achieving Roman-like quality over Rubin’s much greater sky coverage.

By showcasing technology to directly photograph Jupiter-like exoplanets, Roman will also provide a crucial stepping stone for NASA’s Habitable Worlds Observatory concept, a flagship space telescope that would be designed to photograph Earth-like planets in other solar systems for the first time ever.

On Cloud 9: Have astronomers discovered the first starless galaxy?

Scientists are closer than ever before to confirming that a galaxy known as "Cloud 9" is the first "starless" or "failed" galaxy ever discovered by humanity.

A starless galaxy is one with virtually no stars despite possessing a wealth of gas and dust that would normally serve as the building blocks of stars.

The dominant element of a starless galaxy would be dark matter, the mysterious "stuff" that remains effectively invisible because it doesn't interact with light.

 

Located 14 million light-years away near the spiral galaxy Messier 94 (M94), Cloud 9 is currently the best candidate for a starless galaxy humanity has discovered to date.

It contains a vast cloud of hydrogen gas with an estimated mass of 1 million times that of the sun, and dark matter with around 5 million solar masses. Yet, the Hubble Space Telescope discovered in January this year that Cloud 9 emits virtually no starlight.

 

"But the most striking aspect of our research was the absolute emptiness of the image at the location of Cloud 9.

When you look at an image reaching those depths and see nothing where a structure containing a million solar masses of gas should be, it is genuinely remarkable," team leader Ignacio Trujillo of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, Spain, told Space.com.

"Most objects in the universe leave some trace of light. Cloud 9 does not. That silence is, in its own way, the most compelling result we could have obtained."

 

On the hunt for a failed galaxy

Trujillo explained that despite having enough raw material to build a small galaxy, Cloud 9 seems to have never formed any significant stellar population.

"That combination — gas but no stars, sitting in a relatively normal environment — makes it one of the most compelling candidates for what theorists call a 'dark' or starless galaxy," Trujillo added.

"The concept has been theoretically predicted for decades, but observationally confirmed cases remain elusive.

"The difficulty is obvious: if there are no stars, there is no visible light to detect, and the only way to find such objects is through their gas emission — typically neutral hydrogen observed at radio wavelengths — combined with extremely deep optical imaging to rule out the presence of even a faint stellar component."

Trujillo and colleagues set about investigating Cloud 9 using the HiPERCAM camera on the Gran Telescopio Canarias, the world's largest optical telescope.

This led to them obtaining the deepest images ever taken of the Cloud 9 region, approximately ten times deeper than any previous optical imaging of this object.

"Honestly, the depth we achieved with HiPERCAM in just 2.36 hours of integration was striking," Trujillo said. What they saw left no questions about the nature of this galaxy.

 

"The result was clear: we detected absolutely no stellar emission within the region corresponding to the location of Cloud 9," Trujillo said.

"Assuming an old, metal-poor stellar population — which would be the hardest kind to detect — we can set an upper limit on the total stellar mass of just 16,000 solar masses.

"Cloud-9 appears to be, within the limits of our observations, genuinely starless."

 

Why do some galaxies 'fail?'

Though starless galaxies are on the verge of escaping the realms of the purely theoretical thanks to this investigation of Cloud 9, how they form is still something of a puzzle.

However, scientists do have a pretty solid idea of how a galaxy could take shape without birthing stars.

 

"The leading theoretical explanation involves the ultraviolet background radiation that permeates the universe," Trujillo said.

"After the epoch of reionization, this radiation field heats the gas in low-mass dark matter halos to temperatures high enough that the gas cannot cool efficiently and collapse to form stars."

 

The researcher added that simulations of this period of the cosmos predict that dark matter halos below a certain mass threshold, around 5 billion solar masses, should remain essentially starless.

"Cloud 9 has a halo mass consistent with this regime. In this picture, starless galaxies are not exotic anomalies but a natural and abundant prediction of standard cosmological models," Trujillo explained. "The challenge has simply been finding them."

 

As impressive as these results are, the jury is still out on Cloud 9 as a starless galaxy. Further investigation will be needed before scientists can firmly declare they have discovered the first starless galaxy.

"On the stellar side, deeper space-based imaging would be particularly valuable because resolving individual stars avoids many of the problems associated with diffuse-light measurements," Trujillo concluded.

"Hubble has already provided extremely strong evidence, and future facilities such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) could potentially push the search further, although the optimal filters and stellar tracers would need to be carefully chosen."

The second Meteosat Third Generation Imager satellite (MTG-I2) has been launched on board Ariane 6, flight VA270, from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana.

It will complete the first family of MTG satellites, delivering data for weather forecasting over Europe and northern Africa with unprecedented quality, quantity and frequency.

Launch took place on Thursday, 27 August, at 22:11 CEST (17:11 local time).

 

The MTG mission brings numerous benefits and improvements to weather forecasting and monitoring the atmosphere and climate over Europe and Africa.

It will track developing weather fronts as they happen and provide high-resolution images of the atmosphere over Europe and northern Africa every 2.5 minutes.

This data will support the reliability of early warnings as well as the tracking of wildfires and atmospheric pollution. It will substantially improve weather forecasting for all European countries.

 

ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programmes, Simonetta Cheli, said, “My congratulations go to all the teams involved who have ensured the successful development of this mission.

MTG-I2 brings advanced satellite technology that will improve climate monitoring and weather forecasts over Europe, offering real benefits to citizens and communities across our continent.

I’d like to extend my gratitude to the European partners and industry who achieved this success through hard work, outstanding expertise and collaboration.”

 

James Champion, ESA’s MTG Project Manager, said, “After years of development and the past few months of intense launch preparations, it’s fantastic to see MTG-I2 being launched and on its way to take its place in the three-satellite system.

"Our team’s work is not over yet – we still have engineers and personnel in operations and ground systems who will be ensuring the spacecraft remains on track over the coming weeks and months.

But for now, we are all elated that the launch has gone well and we look forward to the coming two weeks or so of orbit-raising manoeuvres during the launch and early operations phase, and then afterwards when the commissioning will begin.”

 

About Meteosat Third Generation

The MTG family now has three satellites in orbit – the first two have been fully commissioned and handed over to Eumetsat for operational service. Since MTG-I2 is the second imaging satellite to join the MTG constellation, it will provide continuity and operational resilience for the mission. T

he first MTG-Imager satellite was launched in 2022, followed by the MTG-Sounder, launched last year. MTG-I2 completes the three-satellite system and, once it has been commissioned, will enable the mission to begin operating at full capacity.

From 2033, the second ‘family’ of MTG satellites will be launched in sequence to extend the mission’s duration beyond 2040. The MTG satellites continue the services previously provided by the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellites, which were placed in orbit between 2002 and 2015.

Imaging from geostationary orbit

MTG-I2 – just like its counterpart, the MTG-I1 – carries two powerful imaging instruments.

The satellite will be placed in geostationary orbit, sometimes compared to a ‘hawk’s eye’ position because the satellites follow the same point on Earth’s surface as it rotates, observing detail from a great distance of 36 000 km.

 

One of the instruments on board the MTG-Imager satellites is the Flexible Combined Imager, which can be operated in different scanning modes.

For MTG-I2, it will provide the rapid scanning service over Europe, delivering new observations every 2.5 minutes. Operating MTG-I2 with this fast repeat cycle is a game-changer for weather forecasting, enabling meteorologists to monitor the rapid development and evolution of weather systems in unprecedented detail. In addition to providing a major increase in the quality, quantity and frequency of observations available for European weather forecasting, the instrument also provides valuable data for monitoring and understanding our climate.

 

The other instrument on board MTG-I2 is the Lightning Imager. This too, is an innovative and powerful instrument, able to capture individual lightning events, by day and night. When it was launched on the first MTG-Imager in 2022, it was the first of its kind in Europe.

The Lightning Imager carried on MTG-I2 provides exactly the same capabilities and can be used for very accurate, short-term forecasting of rapidly evolving weather conditions, sometimes referred to as ‘nowcasting’.

Another innovative product that will be further enhanced once all three of the MTG satellites are in orbit is the weather cube, which will combine data from both the Imager and Sounder satellites to create three-dimensional representations of lightning, winds, internal clouds dynamics and other atmospheric gases, including greenhouse gases and air pollutants.

 

Weather forecasters, climate scientists and researchers benefit from the advanced data and images provided by the Meteosat series of satellites and MTG is designed to extend that legacy.

The constellation also provides key information and imagery for monitoring hydrology, agriculture, environmental studies as well as risk prevention and disaster warnings.

 

First step of a long journey

This was the ninth launch of Europe’s heavy-lift rocket, Ariane 6, and the first to take a satellite to geostationary transfer orbit. Ariane 6 was configured with two P120C-based solid-propellant rocket motors propelling it to the farthest the rocket has flown so far.

Following launch, the MTG-I2 satellite separated from its Ariane 6 launcher and communication was immediately established between the spacecraft and the Malindi ground station.

 

The next steps for the satellite include starting its propulsion system and deploying its solar arrays, to ensure that the spacecraft can generate and store the energy needed for the next stages of the mission.

When the satellite is safely powered, the team will activate the attitude control system, then begin preparations for a series of critical orbital manoeuvres.

This will involve using MTG-I2’s propulsion system to progressively raise the spacecraft’s perigee and adjust its trajectory as it begins its journey towards geostationary orbit.

Once in its final orbit, the satellite will be rotated so that it points towards Earth. This milestone will mark the completion of the launch and early operations phase and the transition towards commissioning.

 

Partnerships for space

All three of the MTG satellites have been developed by ESA and built by a large consortium of European industries led by Thales Alenia Space with main partners OHB System in Germany and Leonardo in Italy.

Eumetsat operates the satellites after commissioning is complete and disseminates the scientific data. ESA manages the Ariane 6 development programme, ensuring autonomous access to space for the benefit of European citizens. Arianespace was the launch service provider for flight VA270.

The simultaneous high-level contacts come as Russia says it has lost faith in Western promises

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has addressed this week’s unusually intense diplomatic traffic in Moscow, shedding light on talks with the Vatican’s top diplomat while remaining deliberately vague about a visit by CIA Director John Ratcliffe.

 

Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, and Ratcliffe were both in the Russian capital this week, prompting RBK to ask Lavrov what was behind the visits.

“In both cases, those who came to us wanted to come and talk,” Lavrov said in an interview published on Friday.

 

Gestures of goodwill and broken promises

Lavrov said his discussions with Gallagher focused heavily on the Ukraine conflict, with the Vatican envoy reiterating a desire to see hostilities brought to an end as soon as possible and offering continued assistance on humanitarian issues, including prisoner and body exchanges.

The foreign minister used the meeting to recount a long series of diplomatic agreements broken, abandoned or derailed by Kiev and its Western sponsors – from the 2014 Euromaidan coup-era agreement to the Minsk accords used to buy Kiev time to rearm, and the 2022 Istanbul talks derailed by London.

 

“I pointed out that there had been no shortage of goodwill on our part… I think he understood everything. I would say he had no counterarguments, apart from the general slogan that ‘it needs to stop as soon as possible,’” Lavrov said.

Lavrov also told Gallagher that the Western push for a ceasefire along the current line of contact would merely freeze the fighting without producing a lasting settlement.

Plans to deploy British- and French-led “stabilization forces” would effectively preserve the “neo-Nazi regime” in Kiev that suppresses the Russian language and the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, he said.

 

Quiet intelligence channels

Lavrov was much more guarded about Ratcliffe’s visit.

I wasn’t there,” he said, noting that intelligence agencies routinely communicate through established channels and that “there is nothing unusual” about such contacts taking place quietly. Diplomats, he added, also often work “in silence.”

“Of course, we do not disclose details that are too sensitive or are still being worked out, where it is important not to jeopardize possible compromises and consensus,” Lavrov said.

The top diplomat also denied allegations that Moscow had issued any kind of ultimatum to the administration of US President Donald Trump following media reports that American intelligence has been used to facilitate long-range Ukrainian strikes against Russia.

 

‘The end has already come’

Lavrov argued that Moscow remains willing to talk to Western governments but no longer assumes that public assurances or negotiated understandings will be honored.

“Deception is the basis of Western diplomacy. And it remains so,” he said, citing what Moscow regards as broken NATO assurances on expansion and successive derailed agreements over Ukraine.

 

Asked why Russia had continued to give its counterparts the benefit of the doubt, Lavrov said Russians tended to believe in people “until the very end.”

“But the end has already come,” he added, arguing that relations with the West would never return to what they were before February 2022.

 

What happened to Anchorage?

Lavrov presented last year’s presidential summit in Anchorage as the latest example of that frustration.

He said Russian President Vladimir Putin went through a US peace proposal point by point with Trump envoy Steve Witkoff, who confirmed that it represented the American leader’s position.

Putin then accepted the proposal despite some remaining “nuances,” according to Lavrov.

“If this is not consent and not an agreement, then I don’t know what an agreement is,” he said.

 

Washington disputes that characterization, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying in June that there had been “a proposal in Alaska, but there was no agreement.”

According to Lavrov, the Anchorage understandings were subsequently undermined over the following months by EU and British leaders. French President Emmanuel Macron eventually declared at the G7 summit in Evian in June that Anchorage had been “buried.”

 

Trump himself, however, has not explicitly declared the Anchorage framework dead. At the original August 2025 summit, he described the talks positively while cautioning that “there’s no deal until there’s a deal.”

Lavrov said Moscow remains ready to hear new US proposals, but in the meantime Russia will “continue working on the ground.”

Ukrainian Drone Attack Kills One, Sparks Fire at Yaroslavl Oil Refinery

A Ukrainian drone attack killed one person and sparked a fire at one of Russia’s largest oil refineries in the city of Yaroslavl, Russian and Ukrainian authorities said Friday.

 

Yaroslavl region Governor Mikhail Yevrayev said one civilian was killed and 27 others were injured after falling drone debris hit an intercity bus.

 

He claimed that 67 Ukrainian drones were downed over the region, but that drone debris fell on residential areas, commercial properties and “industrial infrastructure.”

 

Ukraine’s military said it struck the Slavneft-Yanos refinery, which it said provides fuel and lubricants for the Russian military.

 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later confirmed the attack and added that Ukraine’s SBU security service had struck a Tu-95MS missile-carrying aircraft in the Saratov region city of Engels.

 

Independent reports said that Ukrainian drones had already attacked Slavneft-Yanos at least seven times this year before Friday’s attack.

 

In the Moscow region town of Pavlovsky Posad, a drone slammed into a Magnit grocery store, blowing out windows at a neighboring clinic. Governor Andrei Vorobyov said the clinic remained open despite the damage.

 

Separate Ukrainian attacks in the southwestern Belgorod region killed two people and injured nine others over the last 24 hours, according to the local governor.

 

Russia’s Defense Ministry said it intercepted 512 Ukrainian drones across Russia and annexed Crimea between Thursday night and Friday morning.

Iran presses other countries to refrain from implementing US sanctions

Eight civilians were killed and dozens more injured in a drone strike targeting people traveling through Sudan’s North Kordofan state, according to the independent Emergency Lawyers rights group.

 

The attack took place Thursday in the Um Sharu area of Sodari locality, the group said in a statement, describing the toll as an initial documented count, Anadolu Agency reported.

 

Emergency Lawyers said the drone struck civilians as they were traveling through the area, destroying four civilian vehicles. It alleged that the drone later returned and struck again as people attempted to evacuate those wounded in the initial attack.

 

According to the rights group, there was no military presence in the area and no armed clashes were underway when the strike occurred.

 

Emergency Lawyers condemned the attack and warned that it could further deepen the suffering of civilians caught up in Sudan’s ongoing war. It also said the attack could deprive wounded victims of urgently needed medical treatment.

 

The group described the incident as a violation of international humanitarian law and said it could potentially constitute a war crime.

 

Emergency Lawyers did not identify those responsible for the strike. Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have been fighting for control of the country, had not issued an immediate comment as of 1200 GMT Friday.

 

North Kordofan is one of Sudan’s three Kordofan states, alongside West Kordofan and South Kordofan. The region has experienced fighting between the army and RSF amid the wider conflict.

 

Sudan has been engulfed in war between the military and RSF since April 2023. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and forced around 13 million others from their homes, according to UN and international estimates.

Greece intercepted a Turkish drone after it violated its airspace

On Friday morning, a Turkish drone entered Greece’s area of responsibility and violated its airspace over the Aegean Sea.

 

The incident occurred in the area between the islands of Samothrace and Lemnos, after which Greek fighter jets intercepted the aircraft.

 

The Turkish drone approached the runway at the Greek airport in Alexandroupoli just as an Aegean Airlines passenger plane was attempting to take off.

 

The Greek side reacted immediately: a pair of Greek Air Force F-16 fighter jets took off to detect, identify, and intercept the unmanned aerial vehicle.

 

Thanks to cooperation between the Civil Aviation Authority and the Greek fighter jets, they managed to divert the drone without compromising the safety of the passenger flight.

 

However, for safety reasons, the plane was instructed to change its flight path and fly at a low altitude until it exited the area. This was reported by the Kathimerini newspaper.

 

Turkish F-16 fighter jets landed at the Lielvarde Air Base in Latvia.

 

An unidentified drone flew into Moldova and Romania.

 

Earlier, Romania scrambled fighter jets due to the threat of drones near the border with Ukraine.

 

As a reminder, on Sunday, August 2, air raid sirens were sounded for the civilian population in eastern Romania for the second time that day.

 

The country’s Ministry of Defense radar surveillance system detected an aerial target near the river border with Ukraine at 3:09 p.m.

 

In Poland, during a massive Russian missile attack on Ukraine on the night of July 29–30, an air raid alert was issued in part of the Lublin Voivodeship.

 

After the alert ended, a crater about 10 meters in diameter and debris from an unidentified object were discovered in a field near the villages of Tarnava-Kolonia and Tokary.

FORT BLISS, Texas- Joint Task Force – Southern Border (JTF-SB), operating under U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) in support of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), successfully defended U.S. military personnel and CBP partners by mitigating three adversarial unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) using directed energy capabilities this week.

 

During the operation, which spanned the late-night hours of August 25 and 26, JTF-SB personnel used the Army Multipurpose High Energy Laser (AMP-HEL) system to engage and defeat three hostile UAS, determined to be such based on their use in direct support of activities posing a physical threat to U.S. military personnel and CBP partners.

 

“The successful defeat of these adversarial drones is a direct testament to the readiness, vigilance, and technological edge of the JTF,” said Maj. Gen. Curtis Taylor, commander of JTF-SB.

 

“Cartel networks are increasingly employing unmanned aircraft systems to facilitate illicit human-smuggling and actively spy on our personnel and law enforcement partners.

 

By integrating layered countermeasures alongside advanced directed-energy capabilities like this laser system, we have made it clear that we will not tolerate hostile surveillance.

 

We also greatly appreciate the support of our Mexican Army partners as we work together to combat this threat to the border region.”

 

Approximately 8,000 service members are currently deployed under JTF-SB across difficult terrain spanning 1,954 miles.

 

Since assuming the mission in March 2025, JTF-SB forces have reinforced hundreds of miles of the southern border with wire obstacles; conducted tens of thousands of detection and monitoring patrols, including in partnership with the Mexican military; executed thousands of observation flights; and cleared vegetation in remote areas.

 

These operations have enhanced CBP’s situational awareness, accelerated response times, and bolstered overall efforts to disrupt cartel-led illegal activity at the southern border.

 

“We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our CBP partners to secure this border, protect our service members, and disrupt these criminal organizations at every turn,” said Taylor.

North Dakota Mother Accused of Slitting Throats of Her Three Children After Telling Father, “Say Goodbye to Your Kids”

A 22-year-old Mandan, North Dakota mother is behind bars after police say she used a kitchen knife to cut the throats of her three young children on August 6. Two are dead. One survived. She told their father to “say goodbye to your kids” on video while holding a pistol at her hip.

 

Kailey Renae Erhart, 22, faces two counts of murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, terrorizing, and domestic violence. Bond was set at $3 million cash. A judge cited the “extreme violence” and threat to the community, according to Law and Crime.

 

Her five-month-old and three-year-old children died from their injuries. Her one-year-old son survived after undergoing extensive surgery and is expected to make a full physical recovery.

 

The case bears chilling similarities to the nationally watched Lindsay Clancy case, though authorities have presented no evidence that Erhart copied or was inspired by Clancy.

 

According to a police affidavit obtained by Valley News Live, officers were dispatched to a home on South Frontier Trail after receiving a report that a mother had stabbed her children.

 

When officers entered the blood-soaked home, they reportedly discovered Erhart holding a kitchen knife against her own throat.

 

Erhart, who was allegedly covered in blood, dropped the weapon and told police officers to kill her.

 

Officers followed a trail of blood into a bedroom, where they found all three children lying motionless on a bed with horrific injuries concentrated around their necks.

 

The five-month-old was pronounced dead at St. Alexius Medical Center that evening. The three-year-old died at Sanford Health early the following morning.

 

The one-year-old miraculously survived.

 

The child’s family later announced that his surgery was successful and doctors expected him to make a full physical recovery.

 

“Last night, he finally smiled at us, and it was the most beautiful thing we’ve ever seen,” the family wrote in an update reported by Gray News.

 

But the allegations describing what occurred before the children were attacked are even more disturbing.

 

Investigators reportedly recovered a video from the father’s phone showing Erhart carrying one of the children while holding a pistol against her hip.

 

“Say goodbye to your kids,” Erhart allegedly told the father.

Conflict Hits 6 Months: Iran Says Diplomacy Can Return But "Pressure Doesn't Work"

 

"Putting diplomacy back on track isn't impossible. It hinges on U.S. understanding of one simple fact: pressure doesn't work. The U.S. should build trust, speak respectfully, acknowledge our rights, and uphold commitments," Araghchi stated.

 

The talks with the top Qatari delegation happened in Tehran, and according to a summary from Doha's side:

 

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said talks covered efforts to de-escalate regional tensions and a proposed interim framework establishing “a temporary joint shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz,” alongside a joint operation to clear mines from the strait.

Al Thani stressed “the necessity of respecting the sovereignty of neighboring countries and freedom of navigation” and resolving disputes through dialogue.

According to Qatar’s readout, Araghchi thanked Doha for its diplomatic efforts supporting dialogue and de-escalation.

And yet, President Trump has this week insisted that all mines are already clear from the strait, as a result of the work of the US Navy. It has remained unclear what precise data or confirmation he is relying on.

 

As for Qatar, it along with Pakistan helped broker the memorandum of understanding in June, which has since gone defunct and is also now expired.

 

President Trump had once again on Thursday claimed that Iran is "begging to make a deal" - something which is not evident in any public stance or statements out of Iran.

 

Instead, Iranian officials have continued by and large striking a defiant tone, with the Foreign Ministry on Friday blasting the "economic terrorism" of the Trump administration.

 

"The US abuse of the dollar as a tool to intimidate other countries in order to force them to follow its interventionist policies, which violate international law, in relation to Iran, constitutes a violation of the national sovereignty and right to self-determination of all member states of the United Nations," the statement said. "US sanctions against Iran, due to both their nature and consequences, constitute a flagrant violation of the UN Charter."

 

The NY Times on Friday underscores that Friday is precisely the six month mark of the Iran conflict, writing:

 

It was supposed to be quick.

 

Still, six months after the U.S. and Israel launched massive airstrikes on Iran, the conflict drags on. The Trump administration has replaced its military war with an economic one, but the result is likely to be no different, analysts said, with a lack of American clarity about goals, a decline in American credibility and a strategic defeat.

 

One thing remains constant, however. The ordinary people of Iran are bearing the brunt of the war, victims of both the United States and their own leaders.

Sorry, aliens didn’t build Dyson spheres around these dwarf stars

Searching for E.T. is full of disappointments.

 

There are many ways to scour the stars for intelligent life. You can search for radio signatures whose repetitions suggest intentional design, or examine a planet that orbits its star in a so-called Goldilocks Zone conducive for habitation.

One of the wildest (but still hypothetically plausible) scenarios involves what’s known as a Dyson sphere.

 

What is a Dyson sphere?

Named after physicist Freeman Dyson, the idea hinges on an alien civilization so advanced that they invent a method to directly harness the energy of an entire star.

Extraterrestrials could theoretically accomplish this feat in a number of ways, but the simplest approach would likely entail encasing a stellar object with orbital installations that absorb solar radiation, convert it into usable energy, and then re-emit that power back to the Dyson sphere’s engineers.

While Dyson himself once described his original 1960 paper as “a little joke,” he later conceded that the underlying technical details are “correct and uncontroversial.”

Despite the joke, many researchers today agree, and argue that searching for Dyson spheres is one of the easiest ways to identify extraterrestrial life.

 

Enter the Webb

Unfortunately, an ongoing cosmic survey called Project Hephaistos at Sweden’s Uppsala University has once again crossed off multiple candidates from their list of suspects.

According to their findings detailed in two soon-to-be published studies, a pair of faint, distant red dwarf stars aren’t surrounded by high-tech alien energy harvesters.

Although disappointing, the findings highlight the ongoing versatility of one of astronomy’s most impressive tools—the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST or Webb).

 

Astronomers theorize that any functioning Dyson sphere will generate a technosignature in the form of waste heat that’s emitted as excess mid-infrared radiation.

Researchers including Uppsala University astrophysicist Andreas Korn previously flagged multiple dwarf stars with “unusual infrared properties that seem[ed] to resemble those expected for Dyson spheres.”

These were selected while employing the European Space Agency’s Gaia satellite and NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), with the candidates exhibiting unexpectedly low optical fluxes and higher infrared fluxes.

The subject pool was vast—around 1 million stars located within around 1,000 light-years of Earth.

 

“This is the signature that we were looking for: a star that is a little bit too faint in the optical and has substantial amounts of waste heat in the infrared,” Korn recently explained.

 

The team ultimately determined their most promising options were two faint M-dwarf stars that are invisible to the naked eye here on Earth and about a few billion years old each.

Researchers then used the JWST to gain a more focused look at each star. Sadly, neither ended up revealing themselves as an elusive Dyson sphere. In actuality, they are pretty standard M dwarfs whose energy is jumbled by background galaxies.

“WISE gives us just a coarse image, and that’s why the photons from the background galaxy and the M dwarfs were blended together so we couldn’t tell them apart,” explained Korn.

“But with Webb, we can tell the two apart and conduct separate analyses of either the galaxy or the foreground M dwarf.”

 

This isn’t the first time Project Hephaistos has encountered similar issues. As time goes on, it appears that many of their Dyson sphere candidates are obscured by background galaxies.

That may not always be the case, however. Multiple proposed mid-infrared telescopes—including the Giant Magellan Telescope—are scheduled to arrive by the 2030s. Until then, the hunt for Dyson spheres continues.

ICE Awards $16.7 Million No-Bid Contract For 6,000 Pairs Of Electric Shock Gloves

 

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has awarded a $16.7 million contract to purchase 6,000 pairs of gloves that can deliver electric shocks. Officers would use them to control resisting detainees and protesters, according to a federal notice published Thursday.

 

The no-bid deal went to Compliant Technologies LLC, a Kentucky firm that manufactures the devices, and covers the gloves plus support equipment and services over the next six months.

 

ICE moved forward with the purchase despite ongoing objections from civil rights advocates and Democratic senators. They said the agency already draws criticism for use of force with unclear oversight.

 

Hours before the notice appeared, a group of senators led by Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) wrote to ICE's acting director, urging the agency to abandon the plan. Fifteen colleagues from the Democratic caucus signed on.

 

"The blatant and tragic misuse of force in Los Angeles, Chicago, Minneapolis, Houston, Maine, and other locations around the country raises significant skepticism about the agency's professional capability to safely deploy a new tool that could be used to harm Americans without cause," the letter said.

 

The Department of Homeland Security, ICE's parent agency, defended the purchase Thursday.

 

"Sanctuary politicians attempting to ban our federal law enforcement from any safety equipment is despicable and a deliberate attempt to undermine and endanger our officers," the agency said in a statement.

 

The plan for the purchase surfaced earlier this month when ICE posted a notice about buying thousands of "conductive distraction and de-escalation devices" for officers and investigators.

 

Gloves Look Like Regular Gear Until Button Is Pressed

The gloves appear as ordinary patrol gloves until an officer presses a button, which activates electrical mode. The shock works only on bare skin, and aims to produce enough pain to make a resisting person comply. Some local jails and police departments already use similar equipment.

 

ICE's notice listed several scenarios for the devices, including high-tension environments during arrests, transport of combative detainees, and civil disturbances outside detention facilities.

 

"It will be used when a subject is actively or passively resisting and an officer needs to gain control quickly to prevent injuries to both parties," the document said.

Cameron Erhart says Child Protective Services had been involved with his family long before the Aug. 6 attack in Mandan. He says Kailey had threatened to kill herself and the children, a safety plan lasted only a few months, and later threats left him afraid to call police. After two children were killed and a third seriously injured, CPS removed the surviving toddler from his care. Now Cameron is speaking publicly about what he believes went wrong before and after the tragedy.

 

MANDAN, N.D. — Cameron says he decided to speak publicly because too many people were forming conclusions about him without knowing what had happened behind the scenes.

 

“There was a lot of misinformation that’s being spread around at the moment. I feel like a lot of the confusion, it’d be nice to clear some of that out.”

On Aug. 6, three young children were attacked inside a Mandan home. Two died. The third survived after undergoing emergency surgery.

 

Their mother, Kailey Erhart, faces criminal charges stemming from the attack. The criminal case remains pending, and Erhart is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

 

Much of the public discussion afterward has focused on Cameron. Did he do enough to protect his children?

 

Cameron says the public does not know exactly what happened during his family’s earlier involvement with CPS, what Kailey had threatened, or why he says he eventually felt trapped and afraid of what could happen if he called authorities.

 

Four days after the attack, as Cameron expected to finally take his surviving son home from the hospital, CPS instead took custody of the child.

 

“I had to walk him out of the hospital into their vehicle,” Cameron said.

 

But Cameron says the story of what happened with CPS began much earlier.

 

Cameron says CPS had been involved with his family well before Aug. 6.

 

According to Cameron, Kailey had threatened to kill herself and the children if he contacted police, telling him she could do it before officers ever arrived. Cameron says he believed those threats.

 

Because he feared that calling police himself could trigger the very thing Kailey was threatening, Cameron says he instead disclosed what was happening to his therapist and, through her, found what he believed was a safer way to contact CPS about the threats. His therapist then contacted CPS on his behalf.

 

Cameron says CPS workers then came to the home and interviewed both parents. According to Cameron, Kailey admitted to CPS that she had made threats involving killing herself and the children.

 

Cameron expected a much stronger intervention.

 

“I feel like they failed me and my children,” Cameron told 701 Report.

 

His account that CPS knew about earlier threats is also reflected in the public criminal affidavit, which states that Cameron told investigators after the attack that Kailey had previously made comments about killing herself and the children and that CPS had been aware of those comments.

 

Cameron says CPS later became more involved after a separate incident involving a firearm and police. Kailey received mental-health treatment, and CPS implemented a safety plan.

 

But Cameron says the plan was minimal. According to him, it lasted only a few months and involved only a few supervised visits, during which Kailey could see the children with another adult present.

 

To Cameron, even that was not enough. Given the threats he says Kailey had already made — and admitted making to CPS — Cameron believed she should not have been permitted contact with the children at all after threats of that nature.

 

“What I feel like should have been done is that Kailey needed to be removed from the kids completely at that time.”

After only a few months, Cameron says the restrictions ended and the earlier CPS involvement effectively came to a close. He says Kailey received psychiatric treatment and appeared more stable for a period.

 

But Cameron says CPS’s earlier response still never matched the seriousness of what the agency had been told. In his view, CPS did intervene. It simply did not do nearly enough.

‘Deception is the foundation of Western diplomacy’ – Lavrov

 

Russia was taken in by the West’s promises due to its peoples’ trusting nature, the foreign minister has explained

 

Moscow trusted in the decency of the West for years, but not anymore, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

 

In an interview with RBK released on Friday, Lavrov was asked why Russia allowed the US and EU to take advantage of it on numerous occasions in recent decades.

 

“Deception lies at the foundation of Western diplomacy. And it still does,” he replied.

 

The minister recalled how the Americans broke their promise not to expand NATO after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 and how France and Germany became guarantors of a deal between democratically-elected Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich and the opposition during the Maidan protests in Kiev in 2014, but proclaimed the rioters as victors after they seized government buildings the next day.

 

Nevertheless, Moscow did not abandon attempts to reach common ground with the West because “after all, we are a God-fearing nation. Our multi-ethnic people have many proverbs about their great patience: ‘God endured, and so must we’, ‘Measure twice, cut once’, ‘Don’t hold your breath for promises’,” he said.

 

“This reveals something about our psychology – not naivety ingrained by centuries of historical experience, but rather the enduring hope that a scoundrel cannot be a complete scoundrel, to put it simply,” Lavrov explained.

 

It is in the Russian national character to maintain “faith in people right to the very end. But the end has already come,” he said.

 

According to the minister, the US and EU “firmly set out on a course of supplying the Nazi Kiev regime with ever more advanced and increasingly deadly offensive weapons” after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.

The scenes shocked the world and showed for everyone to see the suicidal character of Socialist Pedro Sánchez’s immigration policies.

A few days later, most of the invaders were sent back across the border to Morocco, and Sánchez galivanted to vacation in the Canary Islands.

However, thousands upon thousands of invaders remained in the enclave – and, as the locals soon pointed out, those were the absolute worst ones.

They turned Ceuta’s beaches into filthy, squalid slums, with makeshift shacks and huts, with human waste covering the sand and floating in the sea.

Near the water, they held ‘fight clubs’ where they faced each other in combat.

Is it any wonder that inhabitants of Ceuta have finally had enough?

A series of viral videos doing the rounds on social media show hundreds of citizens charging the beach slum, expelling the invaders, tearing down the shacks and huts, in some cases burning them.

After the invaders are cleared off the beach, the site is cleaned of the garbage and filth.

Of course, when the police come, it comes against the citizens, never to defend them. That’s Sánchez’s Spanish dystopia.

A contributor to the high cost of food, seeds as an input account for up to 25% of farmers’ operating budgets. Four companies, the “Big 4,” control 51% of the global seed market — and they are the same four companies that control 62.3% of the agricultural chemical market — Bayer, Corteva, Syngenta (owned by ChemChina) and BASF.

 

The top four companies selling genetically modified seeds are the same. This concentration in the industry leads to higher costs and less choice for farmers, and less research into varieties suitable for organic systems.

 

The Fair Seeds for Farmers Act attempts to reduce these impacts. A 2023 U.S. Department of Agriculture report (USDA), “More and Better Choices for Farmers: Promoting Fair Competition and Innovation in Seeds and Other Agricultural Inputs, summarizes many of the problems.”

 

Farmers in the U.S. have not always needed to buy seed. The federal government — through the Patent Office until 1862 and the USDA thereafter until 1924 — mailed seeds free of charge to farmers throughout the country.

 

USDA collected seeds (germplasm) from farmers who experimented with varieties to meet regional needs, saved the seeds and shared them. In 1924, responding to pressure from seed companies, the practice ended.

 

Further support for the commercialization of seed production came from the Plant Patent Act (PPA) of 1930, applying to asexual reproduction of plants (e.g., grafting scions, cuttings, and runners), and the Plant Variety Protection Act (PVPA) of 1970, applying to seeds.

 

Under the PVPA, plant breeders were granted an exclusive right to propagate and sell their new varieties for 20 years, but those varieties were available to researchers who could use them for breeding new varieties, and farmers could save seeds to replant (and, until 1994, sell).

 

A number of Supreme Court decisions from 1980 to 2001 resulted in utility patents being issued for seeds and plants. Utility patents (“patents for invention” or “patents”), which can be issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for inventions that are novel, nonobvious and useful, apply to all users and can restrict seed saving, research and breeding.

 

Thus, patents eliminate resources from the pool of genetics available to plant breeders for improving crops. If breeders are allowed to use patented plants for breeding, they are often subject to restrictive licensing agreements.

 

Organic farmers can lose certified crops when genes (pollen) drift from GE plants. But they and others are also subject to lawsuits for patent infringement from the large seed/pesticide/biotech companies.

 

The Fair Seeds for Farmers Act, introduced in the U.S. House by Representatives Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) and Greg Casar as H.R. 9681 and S. 5104 in the U.S. Senate by Senators Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.), is an attempt to reduce the impacts of intellectual property (IP) laws on farmers through provisions that:

 

Clarify terms relating to IP protection for plants;

Limit the application of federal statutes for plant IP protection to that contained in the PPA and PVPA — thus eliminating the abusive use of utility patents; and

Protects the use of “a plant, plant variety, plant germplasm, or other biological material for research, breeding, experimentation, seed saving, or propagation” from being limited by contract or agreement.

(The legislation does not apply to existing patents.)

How the Vasco UFO Claims Took Off

The VASCO project, short for Vanishing and Appearing Sources during a Century of Observations, is built on a smart, almost old‑school idea.

Villarroel's team uses archival photographic plates, taken long before the sky was crowded with satellites and space junk, to hunt for technosignatures, signs of advanced technology that might briefly flare and then vanish.

 

The studies at the heart of the current argument used early 1950s images from the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey, known as POSS‑I. Each region of sky was photographed twice in quick succession, once with a red‑sensitive plate and once with a blue‑sensitive one.

VASCO's software scanned the digitised plates looking for things that appeared in one exposure but not the other. Those were labelled transients and, in the more speculative framing, possible UFO‑like artefacts in orbit.

 

The most attention‑grabbing claim was statistical. Villarroel's team said there were far fewer transients recorded on plates taken during Earth's shadow, when sunlight could not reflect off orbiting objects.

They calculated that deficit as a '22 sigma' result. In particle physics, 5 sigma is the gold standard for a discovery. Twenty‑two is almost absurdly strong, the sort of number that suggests either profound new physics or that something, somewhere, has gone mad in the spreadsheets.

In a second paper, Bruehl and Villarroel said that the dates of these transients significantly overlapped with the timing of nuclear tests. The implication, not exactly buried in the framing, was that whoever might be flying those hypothetical craft was paying close attention to mushroom clouds.

 

Rigorous Scientific Pushback Led by Wesley Watters

The pushback has now arrived in the form of a detailed critique led by Wesley Watters of Wellesley College.

His paper, titled 'Critical Evaluation of Studies Alleging Evidence for Technosignatures in the POSS1 – E Photographic Plates,' was accepted by the Australian astronomy journal after peer review and posted online ahead of print.

 

What makes this more awkward for UFO enthusiasts is who is doing the debunking. Watters has previously argued that unidentified aerial phenomena deserve serious, agnostic study.

Co‑author Kevin Knuth, a physicist at the University at Albany, SUNY, has published work examining US Navy pilot UAP encounters. Both have been affiliated with Avi Loeb's Galileo Project, which is explicitly set up to examine UAPs scientifically, not to scoff at them.

 

In other words, this is not a hit job from dyed‑in‑the‑wool sceptics. It is criticism from scientists who, if anything, have stuck their necks out to say UFO reports should not be laughed out of the room.

Watters and his colleagues start with a mundane but brutal problem, the plates themselves. Old photographic glass is riddled with defects, from dust and scratches to emulsion flaws and copying artefacts.

Astronomers spent years trying to use similar plates to catch fleeting optical signals from gamma‑ray bursts, only to conclude the medium just was not up to that kind of work at scale.

 

Because of that, Watters refuses to call the POSS‑I blips 'transients' at all. His team rebrands them 'Selected POSS 1‑E Features,' or SPFs, until someone can prove they are real astronomical objects.

Then they try to reconstruct, plate by plate, what subset of the survey VASCO actually used, a task made harder because Villarroel's team did not publish their full working dataset.

Once they do that, a pattern emerges, and not a good one. SPFs cluster at plate edges, disappear in wide stripes, and bunch oddly in certain regions.

The sky map is a mess. For a robust statistical analysis, you need an underlying distribution that is roughly uniform and random, something that can be modelled as a Poisson process.

 

Watters argues that the VASCO features fail that basic test, which means the more sophisticated maths layered on top is on wobbly ground from the start.

On closer inspection, only 11 of the 645 plates VASCO used were even in shadow, and just five were fully so. Most of the supposed signal came from a single problematic plate that sat in one of the odd 'bands' where defects were already clustering.

 

Watters' team points out that VASCO's correlation used the wrong observing timescale, treating the survey as if it spanned 2,718 observing days instead of the actual 312 days from which their plates were drawn.

Correct that, and the apparent UFO‑nuclear overlap collapses into something more prosaic.

A loose relationship between the periods when the Palomar telescope was operating and when nuclear tests were conducted, perhaps because both favoured clear weather over the western US.

As for aliens timing their fly‑bys to our detonations, that statistical mirage evaporates.

 

Collapsing the Statistical Mirage and Timescale Errors

When the Australian‑led group re‑ran the crucial Earth‑shadow calculation with their reconstructed dataset, the jaw‑dropping 22 sigma result vanished. They found no statistically significant deficit of features in Earth's shadow.

 

Philosophical Friction Between UFO Belief and Scientific Process

The final part of Watters' critique is almost philosophical. He accuses the VASCO papers of circular reasoning, treating the features as genuine transients from the outset and then using that assumption to argue they must be real technosignatures.

Without independent confirmation that most of these specks are not just plate defects, the logic folds in on itself.

 

None of this means the VASCO concept is useless. On the contrary, trawling clean, digitised archives for technosignatures is a sharp, modern twist on classic astronomy.

The problem, according to Watters, is that this particular dataset is simply too dirty and too sparse in the critical regions to bear the UFO‑flavoured weight put on it.

 

Predictably, the backlash has not been limited to journal pages. Unrefereed online documents have popped up purporting to rebut the Australian‑led critique, bypassing peer review entirely and demanding to be treated as equal parts of the scientific conversation.

Researchers who are unconvinced by the UFO‑friendly statistics are branded 'part of the problem' or worse. At which point many working scientists quietly ask themselves why they should spend time on this stuff when they could be doing almost anything else.

 

And that is the uncomfortable question hanging over this latest UFO skirmish. Does the UAP community actually want their favourite claims tested, stress‑tested even, inside the sometimes painful machinery of science, or do they want those claims protected from serious challenge? If you are unwilling to let your beliefs be broken by better data and better maths, you are not really doing science any more. You are doing something else entirely.

Eight years before COVID emerged, a journalist issued a prophetic warning that risky viral research could usher in “doomsday” and damage the reputation of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Anthony Fauci groused in an email to an aide about that warning, then instructed the aide to permanently delete the exchange, documents obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation show.

 

The documents add to growing evidence that Fauci destroyed public records despite his sworn testimony that he never did. Deleting government records violates federal law.

 

Fauci did not respond to a request for comment.

 

In 2011, the advent of gain-of-function research — experiments that make viruses more infectious or deadly in the lab — caused its first major controversy. With funding from Fauci’s institute at the NIH, Dutch virologist Ron Fouchier had made an airborne strain of a bird flu with an estimated 50% fatality rate, which he described as “probably one of the most dangerous viruses you can make.”

 

Fauci and New York Times science writer Phil Boffey traded barbs in newspaper opinion pages about the work.

 

Manmade pandemic viruses are a “risk worth taking,” Fauci insisted in a December 2011Washington Post editorial, because they could help drugmakers and public health get a jump start if they emerge in nature. NIH Director Francis Collins and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Vaccine Research Center Gary Nabel co-authored the op-ed.

The New York Times published an op-ed apparently written by Boffey in January 2012 arguing that NIH created an “engineered doomsday” that could kill “hundreds of millions of people.” The new emails reveal the author of the un-bylined op-ed for the first time.

 

“The consequences, should the virus escape, are too devastating to risk,” he said in an apparent reference to the title of Fauci’s op-ed.

 

Boffey wrote a follow-up in March 2012 titled “The Truth About the Doomsday Virus?” Under scrutiny from the press, Fouchier had backpedaled on his earlier statements about his virus’s lethality. Fauci meanwhile pushed to publish the Fouchier experiment despite biosecurity experts’ concerns the information could fall into the hands of a bioterrorist.

 

As the question marks suggests, Boffey was skeptical of Fouchier’s assurances. Experts who had read his initial description of the experiment said it stated the airborne virus remained as lethal as the natural one, he wrote.

 

One sentence really rattled Fauci: “Now, this country’s National Institutes of Health, which financed the research and has its own reputation on the line, is asking the [NSABB] to reconsider its call to redact details before publication.”

 

“Phil Boffey is really off base here,” Fauci wrote to Collins, on March 4, 2012. “He is acting like a mischievous guy.”

 

“Clearly, people are getting to Phil Boffey and he is swallowing it,” Fauci sounded off in a more candid email to a subordinate the next morning.

 

Fauci strongly opposed a recommendation from the NIH’s biosecurity advisors to not publish sensitive details about Fouchier’s experiment. He said that if the advisors did not change their recommendation “the field of research on influenza … has a serious problem.”

 

“Please delete this e-mail and then delete from the deleted file,” Fauci said on his NIH email in apparent violation of federal record-keeping laws.

 

Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul highlighted two other instances of Fauci apparently seeking to delete public records in 2020, despite his sworn testimony before another committee in 2024 that he never did.

 

Fauci ultimately persuaded NIH’s biosecurity advisors to allow the Fouchier experiment to be published in full.

Trump allies allege foreign interference as a host at an Israeli-funded media outlet has set its sights on targeting Vice President JD Vance.

 

The subject of the Trump-world ire is specifically commentary pushed by Emily Schrader, a media personality with the Jerusalem News Syndicate (JNS), a pro-Israel news and commentary outlet whose coverage generally reflects a conservative, right-leaning perspective. Schrader hosts JNS’s Axis of Truth podcast and co-hosts The Quad, a JNS YouTube show. Notably, JNS serves as a quasi-wire service for numerous Jewish-oriented publications across the U.S.

 

Since at least 2025, Schrader has used both her social media platforms and JNS to push unsubstantiated claims against the vice president. As well as level personal insults.

 

In a post on X earlier this summer, Schrader referred to Vance as a “clown,” and in another made the outlandish suggestion that the vice president “wants the [Iranian] regime to survive lol.”

 

Schrader, in a July X post, appears to mock the idea that an “Israeli conspiracy” could be amplifying criticism of Vance, claiming instead that “national security experts have watched him misread the regime, smear allies, ignore Qatar’s documented influence operations, and now even portray 94 million Iranians as a terrorist threat.” Despite brushing aside allegations of a foreign-sourced effort to smear the vice president, Schrader is very open about her own foreign interests, describing herself on her personal website as an “American-Israeli journalist, author, and human rights activist” focused on Israeli and Iranian affairs.

 

Importantly, JNS, which hosts much of Schrader’s content, has received significant funding from the Adelson Family Foundation, according to a Jewish Telegraphic Agency report. Established by Sheldon and Miriam Adelson, both major donors to Republican and Trump-aligned causes, the Adelson Family Foundation committed at least $1.2 million to JNS, including $300,000 in 2013, $450,000 in 2014, and another $450,000 pledged.

 

More recently, Inside Philanthropy listed JNS among the foundation’s recent Israel advocacy grantees.

 

Aside from JNS, Schrader also appears frequently as a host on ILTV Israel News, which bills itself as “an independent English-language media company based in Tel Aviv, Israel that provides daily Israel news and entertainment to its viewers,” and “Israel’s Largest English News Channel.” ILTV was owned by Simon Falic — a close friend and ally of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — and David Herzog up until May 2026, when it was sold to New York tech entrepreneur Reuven Moskowitz and the network’s CEO, Tom Zadok.

 

In 2025, Reuven Moskowitz bought a sprawling — over 18,000 square feet — mansion on Hadar Street in Caesarea for an estimated $26.3 million, as reported by Globes. According to the outlet, Arkady Gaydamak, a Russian-Israeli businessman, previously owned the property. The mansion’s location is notable as it makes Reuven Moskowitz effectively neighbors with Prime Minister Netanyahu, whose private residence is on the same small exclusive street.

An image of the moon's surface has sparked theories of extraterrestrial life.

NASA's Lunar Orbiter 3 snapped the photo in 1967, as the agency prepared to send humans there for the first time.

Nearly six decades later, UFO researcher Scott Waring has claimed that it captured something far more extraordinary than the lunar landscape.

 

He believes an elongated feature in the image is an alien spacecraft hovering above the surface, stretching an astonishing 3.4 miles from end to end.

Waring arrived at that estimate by comparing the feature with Theophilus crater, using a crater diameter of 68 miles and judging the supposed craft to be one-twentieth as long.

 

For him, the photograph carries a chilling implication: that humanity was being watched before astronauts ever set foot on the moon.

‘This is 100% proof that aliens were watching humans before we ever stepped on the moon,’ he wrote on his website UFO Sightings Daily.

He even suggested that the enormous vessel would be considered a ‘small shuttle craft’ by its supposed occupants.

 

However, Waring provides no independent evidence that the feature is a spacecraft, and neither its claimed size nor its alleged extraterrestrial origin has been established.

NASA has also maintained that it has no evidence of extraterrestrial life and has yet to find any signs of current or past life on Mars.

 

Waring, however, is sure that the mysterious object in the photo is an alien craft.

'There is a long spacecraft hovering over the moon's surface in a NASA photo from 1967,' he wrote in his blog.

'I took the measurement of the crater in the photo called Theophilus crater, which is 110km or 68 miles across by 4.4km or 2.7 miles deep, and can conclude that this UFO is 1/20 the length of the crater…equals 5.5km or 3.4 miles long UFO.

'That's huge to us humans, but to aliens, it's considered a small shuttle craft.'

 

While the American space agency has dismissed aliens visiting the moon, the Trump Administration's UFO files have revealed unexplainable phenomena during the Apollo moon missions.

On May 8, the US Department of War released hundreds of pages of documents, pictures and audio recordings allegedly providing evidence of extraterrestrial sightings dating back to the 1940s.

 

Included in what has been described as the first batch of UFO files expected to come from the Pentagon this year were the transcripts of the Apollo 12 and Apollo 17 moon missions.

Those files and a collection of images taken by the astronauts on the moon revealed multiple encounters with strange objects that appear to fly around their lunar landers.

During the Apollo 17 mission in 1972, astronauts Gene Cernan, Jack Schmitt and Ron Evans reported seeing a bright object that rotated and flashed rhythmically out in space.

Islamophobia has become Israel’s Trojan Horse to win over westerners

 

Israel’s Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli (pictured above) has explained his own strategy more candidly than any critic could.

 

Antisemitism, he told an interviewer, does not much interest the average European or American, whereas fear of “radical Islam” interests them “very, very much”, and Israel therefore needs “to take advantage of that”.

 

Here is a senior cabinet minister admitting that Islamophobia has become a Trojan Horse for Israel to win over European and American hearts and minds.

 

And it is the clearest account yet of what his ministry has become under Benjamin Netanyahu; an office that once existed to protect Jewish communities abroad now works to turn European fear of Muslims into political capital for the Israeli government.

 

His ministry was built for the opposite work.

 

Diaspora affairs meant supporting Jewish communities, taking their guidance, defending them against the forces that genuinely threaten them.

 

But while his predecessors asked what would keep Jews safe, Chikli asks what narrative can be weaponised to make an easier sell. The most effective selling point, he has concluded, is not Israel at all but fear of somebody else.

 

A civilisational war

Since its genocide in Gaza, the old case for Israel on its own merits has grown harder to make, and a new one has slipped into its place. Support Israel, the argument runs, because Israel is fighting the people coming for you next.

 

In this narrative Israel becomes the forward operating base of a civilisational war, the frontier of what Chikli, in a 2024 interview with Jewish Insider, called the “Judeo-Christian world” set against a “red-green alliance” of the progressive left and Islam.

 

He deliberately blurs the line between confronting violent groups and Islam tapping into the playbook of far-right populism, which is on the rise across the West.

 

The company he keeps confirms as much.

 

Chikli has courted Marine Le Pen’s National Rally in France, Spain’s far-right Vox party, the Sweden Democrats, and Dutch populist Geert Wilders, every one of them a party built on hostility to immigration and to Islam.

 

Paradoxically, the ministry designed to protect Jews from antisemitism has become a ministry of subversion, ripening the very audiences and networks on the far right that have been on the very forefront of Jew hate globally.

 

In October 2025, days after two Jews were killed, one of them by police during armed response, outside a Manchester synagogue on Yom Kippur, Chikli invited the English agitator Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon and who has accumulated multiple criminal convictions and prison terms over the past two decades, to Israel, and hailed him as “a courageous leader on the front line against radical Islam”.

 

Those protesting the visit at the time were not the progressive left Chikli likes to blame, but British Jews themselves.

 

The Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Jewish Leadership Council called Robinson “a thug who represents the very worst of Britain”, and they dismissed Chikli as “a diaspora minister in name only” who had ignored the community he claims to serve. Jews in whose name he claims to act wanted no part in this endeavour.

 

An institution built to bind Israel to Jewish communities has decided that the easy road to defending the undefendable rhetoric and action of the Netanyahu’s government runs not through making Israel more persuasive but through making Europeans more afraid.

 

And it asks Jews to hand their safety to the very politics of collective suspicion their own history should have taught the West to dread.

 

No one has ever defeated the hatred of one people by bankrolling the hatred of another.

Now, direct evidence has come from a handful of black spherical capsules attached to rocks, showing that free-living flatworms reproduce at more than 6,000 meters deep.

In a paper published in Biology Letters, researchers described cocoons recovered from the abyssal slope of the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench in the northwestern Pacific, at depths of 6,176 to 6,200 meters.

 

Against that background, marine biologist Sylvia Earle told EL PAÍS that “we know the surface of Mars better than our ocean floors.”

Her point was broader than these worms, but it captures the difficulty researchers face when studying animals living thousands of meters below the surface.

 

Four Capsules Survived the Trip

At first, most of the capsules were already damaged. Researchers found many dark spherical bodies on rock fragments, but most had been torn open and were empty. Only four intact cocoons were available for close examination.

On Sept. 21, 2023, the rocks were collected during a cruise of the research vessel Hakuho-maru. According to the peer-reviewed account, researchers used a beam trawl to recover the two rock fragments carrying the capsules.

That detail matters because some later reports described the samples as having been retrieved by a remotely operated vehicle, an account that does not match the methods section of the paper.

 

At Hokkaido University, invertebrate researcher Keiichi Kakui, who helped examine the cocoons and embryos, did not initially recognize the objects.

He told IFLScience, “I thought they may be protists or something.” Then he opened one: “I cut one of them, and a milky liquid-like thing leaked from it,” Kakui said.

Inside were pale, fragile flatworms.

 

Working with co-author Aoi Tsuyuki, Kakui found that, where measurements were available, the capsules measured about 3.1 to 3.3 millimeters and each held three to seven embryos; while some embryos were still roughly spherical, others were already shaped like worms, forms the researchers interpreted as earlier and later developmental stages.

DNA Narrowed the Identity

To work out what the animals were, the team extracted DNA from two specimens, one spherical and one worm-shaped.

They compared sequences from genes commonly used to reconstruct evolutionary relationships and also prepared one specimen as microscopic sections just 7 micrometers thick.

In the genetic analysis, the worms fell within Maricola, a small group within the flatworm order Tricladida. The paper notes that Maricola contains about 80 described species and that nearly all comparable members represented in genetic databases came from freshwater, brackish or shallow marine habitats. From that pattern, the researchers suggested that the lineage may have expanded from coastal waters into the abyss.

 

Using DNA, the team also connected the different-looking embryos.

The sequences showed only minor variation consistent with members of the same species, supporting the conclusion that the spherical and worm-shaped specimens represented different points in development rather than different kinds of animal.

The authors concluded that at least two adults had laid them. On the same rock, genetically distinct individuals appeared among the cocoons.

 

The Previous Record Was Far Shallower

Before the new specimens were analyzed, the deepest certain record cited for a free-living flatworm was Oligocladus voightae, collected at 3,232 meters.

That’s a long way down. The species was described in a 2006 Zootaxa paper on deep-sea polyclad flatworms from the North Pacific.

 

Although researchers had reported a possible flatworm from sunken wood at more than 5,200 meters, that record was uncertain because the animal itself was not firmly established as a flatworm and the wood could have carried an organism downward after sinking.

Cocoons fixed to rocks at abyssal depth provide stronger evidence that the newly examined worms were actually reproducing there.

 

An Ordinary Start in Extreme Water

More unexpectedly, the embryos themselves showed “no obvious differences” from developmental stages already known in other triclads, the authors wrote, despite living under enormous pressure in permanent darkness.

From that comparison, Kakui and Tsuyuki proposed that adapting to the abyss may have involved physiological or ecological changes more than fundamental changes to early development.

Their shallow-water relatives also enclose embryos in capsules attached to hard surfaces, and the deep-sea specimens appear to follow much the same basic plan.

 

As the sampling gear operated, video showed a muddy seabed scattered with rocks and gravel.

The researchers suggested those hard surfaces could provide places for the flatworms to attach their cocoons, including the rock fragment that returned to the surface carrying seven late-stage embryos.

The next clues are likely to arrive the same way: attached to whatever researchers manage to bring back from the abyss.

Greece And Israel Near ‘Achilles’ Shield’ Deal Directed Against Turkey

 

Greece and Israel are set to sign agreements next week in Tel Aviv launching the “Achilles’ Shield,” a multibillion-euro air defense project that Greek officials call a major step in modernizing the country’s defenses, Kathimerini reported on August 28.

 

The agreements will be signed on August 31 by Greece’s General Directorate for Defense Investments and Armaments, part of the Ministry of National Defense, and SIBAT, the Defense Cooperation Directorate of Israel’s Ministry of Defense. Once signed, the contracts will start a 35-month countdown to complete the project.

 

Sources at Greece’s Ministry of National Defense told the Greek news outlet that outstanding issues were resolved in recent days, including provisions guaranteeing 25 percent Greek industrial participation and the transfer of source code, which is meant to ensure Greek armed forces retain control of the software running the network.

 

The project is expected to cost a total of 3.1 billion euros. Twelve Greek companies are expected to take part, carrying out work valued at more than 700 million euros.

 

The network is designed to combine existing Greek assets — including Patriot long-range air defense systems and drones already deployed on islands and the mainland — with Israeli-made air defense systems. The latter include Rafael’s Spyder short-range systems; Israel Aerospace Industries’ Barak MX systems for medium-range threats; and David’s Sling, which intercepts ballistic missiles and other long-range threats.

 

Greek defense officials cited by Kathimerini said the network will run on artificial intelligence-based software that identifies and classifies potential threats and recommends the most effective means of interception.

 

The software will link subsystems responsible for ballistic missile defense, drone countermeasures, and broader air defense operations, evaluating data without human intervention and indicating the optimal response.

 

The officials also revealed that the project could help reduce costs by matching responses to the type of aerial threat involved.

 

Defense ties between Greece and Israel have expanded steadily over the past several years into a multifaceted partnership.

 

In 2021, Elbit Systems secured a long-term contract to operate and modernize the International Flight Training Center in Kalamata, giving the Israeli firm a sustained presence at a major Greek air base and providing the Hellenic Air Force with upgraded trainer aircraft and simulators.

 

Greece has since acquired Rafael’s Spike NLOS anti-tank missiles for island defense, and in late 2025 its parliament approved the purchase of 36 Elbit PULS multiple-launch rocket systems.

Mayor Karen Bass just made it official: Los Angeles is a sanctuary city when it comes to enforcing food safety laws with thousands of street stands that have popped up all over the city — many of them run by illegal aliens.

Bass’s announcement this week ordering police to stop issuing violations to unpermitted vendors follows a Breitbart News investigation last month that revealed the widespread lack of enforcement of city and county food safety laws, with street food stands run by illegal migrants getting a free pass while citizen restaurateurs and licensed food stands are subject to fines, high costs, burdensome regulations and even closure.

Bass’s office told the California Post Thursday that the mayor “stands firmly with street vendors” and has directed the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to stop issuing criminal citations to unpermitted vendors.

“Street vending is a quintessential part of LA’s world-class food scene and a livelihood for thousands of hardworking Angelenos. Supporting LA’s street vendors is more important than ever given ongoing attacks by ICE,” her office told the outlet.

The message is clear, say critics. If you’re in the United States illegally and operating a business illegally, you get a free pass. If you are a citizen, you must follow all the rules or face fines and even closure.

As Breitbart News reported in July, an estimated 50,000 vendors operate throughout Los Angeles but fewer than 700 have active permits, with only 53 of those for food vendors.

Missouri pastor convicted in $1.8M pandemic, auto and personal loan fraud scheme

 

A federal jury found Kenneth C. Sparks III, 56, guilty of 10 counts of money laundering, six counts of wire fraud, three counts of aggravated identity theft and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

 

Evidence and testimony presented during Sparks’ trial revealed that he was initially invited to Faith Walk Ministry in Paris, Missouri, to preach for three days. Instead, he stayed three years, using the church, its employees and parishioners to launch what Assistant U.S. Attorney Derek Wiseman described to jurors as a “full-time fraud operation.”

 

Sparks claimed to be a prophet and an apostle of God, whose word could not be questioned.

“Kenneth Sparks impersonated God himself in order to steal millions of dollars in public funds during the worst days of the pandemic,” said Wiseman during closing arguments.

 

Investigators say Sparks first fraudulently obtained an Economic Injury Disaster Loan for himself during the COVID-19 pandemic. He then asked parishioners for their personal and bank account information, using that to apply for additional loans.

 

Sparks reportedly directed parishioners and church employees to open accounts at a credit union to receive loan funds and had them sign blank checks. He reportedly told them that he would use the information to fix their credit and obtain grants to build a megachurch.

Attorney General Brown Secures Court Order Temporarily Blocking Postal Service’s Unlawful Mail Voting Rule

Attorney General Anthony G. Brown and a coalition of 25 states have secured a temporary restraining order (TRO) from the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, temporarily blocking a new rule by the United States Postal Service (USPS) that would have imposed burdensome requirements on vote-by-mail systems ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

 

The order blocks USPS from requiring states to obtain the federal government’s approval of ballot and return-envelope designs, register for a new USPS portal for tracking voter information, input information for each of their state’s voters into the portal, and comply with other provisions.

 

The court found that compliance with the rule before the November elections was “practically impossible,” noting that states do not have the time to redesign and produce new ballots, update state-administered election systems, train state and local election officials, and upload a massive set of voter information to a new federal portal.

 

The court found that these requirements created a significant risk of disenfranchisement, particularly because USPS’s rule neither provided a deadline to the states for ballot and envelope designs nor guaranteed a turnaround time for USPS’s approval of those designs. The court concluded that states face irreparable harm because many had already ordered their ballots, with some states required by state law to begin sending them to voters as early as next week.

 

“This is a critical first step in stopping an unlawful rule that would have imposed last-minute federal requirements on state mail voting systems and put eligible voters at risk of having their ballots delayed or rejected,” said Attorney General Brown. “The right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy, and my Office will keep fighting until this unlawful attack is permanently blocked.”

Iran calls for global pushback against U.S. sanctions, says diplomacy ‘isn’t impossible’

Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Friday called on “all countries” not to implement U.S. sanctions against Tehran, warning that doing so would represent “complicity” in imposing the “illegal will” of the United States.

The comments were laid out in a two-page letter published via Telegram, as the country set its conditions for reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and touted the prospect of a return to diplomatic negotiations.

 

The White House announced an “economic D-Day” campaign against Tehran earlier in the week, threatening countries that do business with the Islamic Republic and shifting its focus from military action to economic pressure after six months of war.

 

U.S. President Donald Trump made clear on Thursday that Washington is not talking with Iran, telling reporters in the Oval Office:“We ‌don’t want to speak to them. We’re not looking to meet or anything.”

 

Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, however, said via X on Friday that “putting diplomacy back on track isn’t impossible.”

 

Araghchi said thatfollowing “creative discussions” with Qatari officials on Thursday to reopen a safe transit route through the strait, the potential for renewed negotiations with Washington “hinges on U.S. understanding of one simple fact: pressure doesn’t work.”

 

He added, “The U.S. should build trust, speak respectfully, acknowledge our rights, and uphold commitments.”

 

Oil prices traded slightly lower on Friday as energy market participants continued to closely monitor crude flows through the Strait of Hormuz.

futures with October delivery dipped 0.1% to $89.63 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate

futures with October delivery fell 0.5% to $83.11.

 

Tehran: Lebanon, Gaza and Syrian conflicts must cease

 

In an interview Thursday, Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, told Lebanese media outlet Al Manar TV that any understanding on the Strait of Hormuz with the U.S. will include an end to wars and military operations in Lebanon, Gaza and Syria.

 

He added that the conflict in the Gaza Strip has to end, while demanding that Israel withdraw from Lebanon and halt attacks on Syria.

 

Rezaei said that the Strait of Hormuz cannot be separated from the broader regional conflict, adding that the U.S. must “prove its seriousness” in implementing these commitments “before any new trust could be established.”

 

However, a return to diplomacy does not seem imminent. The Wall Street Journalreported on Thursday that the Trump administration has no interest in going back to the terms of the memorandum of understanding it reached with Iran in June.

 

Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal said that Trump was no longer interested in the June deal framework, and is instead waiting to see if his administration’s strategy of pressuring Iran economically will work.

 

Temporary relief

 

Iran is now allowing a “temporary and limited” corridor for ships to pass through the Hormuz Strait, and the future of maritime traffic will depend on developments in understandings with Washington, according to Rezaei.

 

Earlier this week, Oman and Iran discussed a proposal to establish a temporary joint shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz as well as a mission to clear mines from the key oil export corridor.

 

However, a video posted on X late Thursday stateside by Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command credited U.S. forces for clearing the mines from the strait.

 

Centcom forces have helped facilitate the transit of approximately 1,500 commercial vessels and 750 million barrels of crude oil over the past several months, Cooper said. “Today, international shipping lanes are open, and momentum is building.”

 

However, the latest available Kpler datashowed that only five ships crossed Hormuz on Tuesday, a far cry from the approximately 130 ships a day that used to transit the crucial waterway before the war broke out in February.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessentunleashed a scathing personal attack on Sen. Elizabeth Warren Friday, accusing the Massachusetts Democrat of misunderstanding foreign exchange markets while leaving several of her questions about a rare U.S. intervention in the Japanese yen unanswered.

 

“In her latest sciolistic letter to me, @SenWarren made it clear that she knows even less about foreign exchange markets than she does about banking,”Bessent wrote on X about the top Democrat on the Senate banking committee. He offered Warren and her staff a tutorial on “Foreign Exchange for Dummies” and accused the news media of failing to identify what he called her “remedial error.” KEK

 

Warren fired back by pointing to a string of recent setbacks for the Treasury secretary.

 

“Tough couple weeks for Sec. Bessent,” Warren wrote on X Friday. “His effort to prop up a foreign currency hasn’t worked. His failed intervention in Treasury markets was blasted by his mentor as burning ‘two centuries’ of credibility. Trump’s economy is crushing families. Maybe he should focus on that.”

 

Bessent was responding to an Aug. 13 letter from Warren, seeking details about Treasury’s decision to sell euros from its Exchange Stabilization Fund and purchase yen after the Japanese currency fell to a 40-year low.

 

Warren’s opening paragraph incorrectly suggested, according to Bessent, that Japan owed money to Treasury, when the senator wrote that “American taxpayers would ultimately bear the cost if Japan were unable to repay” the department.

 

“Treasury exchanged existing Exchange Stabilization Fund foreign-currency assets for yen,” Bessent wrote in his response, dated Thursday. “No new congressional appropriation was involved, and no credit was extended to Japan. Japan owes Treasury nothing.”

 

Despite the opening phrasing, Warren’s letter later correctly described the intervention as a sale of euros for yen, explicitly noting that Japan had not borrowed from the Treasury or the Federal Reserve.

 

Bessent defended the intervention as necessary to protect U.S. economic interests, arguing that a disorderly yen could destabilize global markets and raise U.S. borrowing costs. However, his one-page response left several of Warren’s questions unanswered.

 

Most notably, Bessent did not disclose how much yen Treasury bought, the execution rate or the position’s current value, even though a July 31 Reuters photoshows Bessent’s notepad reading, “Buy Japanese Yen (JPY) $5-10 bil.” He also did not say whether the European Central Bank was consulted before the euro sale or provide the detailed legal justification Warren requested.

 

The intervention marked the first coordinated U.S.-Japan effort to strengthen the yen since 1998. Japan spent 15.4 trillion yen, or about $96.5 billion, supporting its currency between July 30 and Aug. 26, a record for the period, according to Japanese Finance Ministry data released Friday.

 

Rather than dwelling on “petty grievances with Senator Warren,” Bessent “should focus … on reducing the cost of living for the American families struggling in President Trump’s economy,” Senate banking committee Democratic spokeswoman Saloni Sharma said in a statement.

 

The Treasury Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The consistent picture: lying is not a small social shortcut. It is listed among the things the Lord hates, it proceeds from the same heart as murder and adultery, it aligns a person with the devil who is “the father of lies,” and Scripture repeatedly says it will not go unpunished.
