UK tries to stop Trump's diesel export ban

The UK is in talks with US authorities over a potential stoppage of diesel exports and has started preparing for a ban, Chancellor John Healey has told BBC News.

Diesel prices in the UK reached a new high on Monday due to supply pressures springing from the US-Israel conflict with Iran and Russia's war with Ukraine.

Fuel prices are rising globally and US President Donald Trump has threatened to ban diesel exports, stating at the weekend: "We're thinking about it very seriously."

Healey, who admitted that UK diesel prices are "extreme", said the government was in discussions with the US, adding: "We're also making the provision that we may need to and we have our own stocks in the UK."

Speaking on the sidelines of the annual Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, Healey said: "We work very closely with the Americans.

"In the end, we're also working with the Americans where we can try and put in place what will solve this, or at least significantly ease it, which would be a diplomatic settlement [and] an end to the fighting with Iran."

The UK depends on the US for around a third of its diesel imports and a ban would send prices even higher.

US sources suggest that Trump is considering a ban to attempt to bring down prices for domestic consumers ahead of the critical midterm elections.

The BBC has contacted the White House for comment.

In the UK, the average price for a litre of diesel reached 199.33p on Monday, according to the RAC motoring organisation, surpassing a previous high of 199.09p in June 2022 after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Petrol prices are also still rising, with a litre currently costing 174.23p.

Over the past seven months, the Iran war has severely disrupted the production and transportation of wholesale oil across the region, causing the price of fuels made from oil to surge.

The RAC said diesel prices had entered "uncharted territory" and served as a reminder of "just how exposed the UK is to events occurring far away".

Healey said he was "very aware" of these cost of living pressures as he prepared what he called a "breathing space" Budget on 28 October.

A freeze on fuel duty, first implemented by the Conservative government in 2022, is due to expire at the end of the year. Duty is scheduled to increase by 3p in January and a further 2p in March.

Healey said: "Fundamentally, what we need is a settlement in the Middle East. We need an easing of the pressure of costs on business, the costs on households and on ordinary families that we see at the pumps in the most extreme level today for diesel."

A trauma surgeon who worked inside the Washington hospital that treated the first diagnosed COVID-19 patient in the United States dropped a political grenade on Capitol Hill Monday.

Dr. James P. Miller told Sen. Ron Johnson’s (R-WI) roundtable, “COVID-19 Hospital Protocols: Real Stories from Real People,” that the head of infectious disease at his hospital privately admitted he was working with state government to restrict the civil rights of unvaccinated Americans.

“The head of infectious disease medicine at my hospital privately told me that he was working with the state government to restrict the civil rights of unvaccinated people,” Miller said.

“Including their ability to drive and therefore work, by making their driver’s license renewal contingent on their COVID vaccine status.”

That is not a conspiracy theory from a comment section. That is a licensed physician and surgeon, under oath in the Senate, describing what he said he heard from the man running infectious disease at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, the same hospital that treated “Patient Zero” in January 2020.

In a sworn attestation Miller previously filed for criminal investigations, he identified that official as Dr. George Diaz and said Diaz told him unvaccinated people should not be allowed to engage in society or hold a driver’s license, and that Diaz claimed he was working with the Washington governor’s office to turn that view into state policy.

Those remain Miller’s allegations. Diaz was the public face of Everett’s first-case response and an early champion of remdesivir.

The hospital that launched the national panic, and the doctor who says the panic was manufactured.

Hamilton steel plant to lay off hundreds of workers as U.S. tariffs prompt 'survival' move

Stelco Holdings Inc. said on Monday that it plans to idle part of its Hamilton plant in order to "ensure the survival" of the company, as U.S. tariffs squeeze its sales.

Stelco said the decision will impact up to 500 employees.

In a memo obtained by CBC News on Monday, the company said it will indefinitely idle its cold-rolled and coated operations at its Hamilton Works plant, with operations set to begin winding down on Oct. 9.

Ron Wells, president of United Steelworkers Local 1005, estimates 350 steelworkers will be laid off. He says he was briefed on the situation in a meeting with the company on Monday morning.

"Obviously, we got to meet with the company, and find out who's getting laid off, [and] make sure it's done by seniority," Wells told CBC News on Monday. "Christmas ain't that far away, and we have no idea the duration of these layoffs … People are concerned. I don't blame them."

The company said this will not impact its ability to supply hot-rolled steel products.

"This is an unfortunate but necessary action to help ensure the survival of Stelco in what has become a challenging and unsustainable market for cold-rolled and coated products caused by the ongoing and sustained trade disruptions impacting the Canadian steel industry," Stelco vice-president of sales Frederic Fafard stated in the memo.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order in June applying up to 50 per cent tariffs to certain steel and aluminum imports from Canada.

"Stelco’s market for cold-rolled and galvanized products has contracted significantly, while import penetration for these products remains at heightened levels," Fafard said in the memo.

"While the measures taken by the federal government in Canada have served to reduce imports into Canada overall, import volumes remain at levels that prevent Stelco from being able to bridge the gap in the market created by the trade crisis."

Ohio-based Cleveland-Cliffs acquired Hamilton-based Stelco in a $3.4-billion Cdn cash-and-stock deal that closed in November 2024. In a news release announcing the deal, Stelco's then-CEO Alan Kestenbaum stated the transaction "keeps national interests at the forefront and recognizes the importance of the workforce."

"We're very disappointed," Wells said. "In particular, when Cliffs bought us in the fall of 2024, they made commitments. One of those commitments was to maintain the same number of unionized employees."

In an email to CBC News on Monday, a Cleveland-Cliffs spokesperson said while Stelco is idling some of its operations in Hamilton, the company's total output of steel will not be impacted as it consolidates production at its Lake Erie Works.

"Very importantly, job opportunities at Lake Erie Works will be offered to Hamilton employees," Pat Persico, the company's senior director of corporate communications stated.

"We expect that a significant number of employees affected by the indefinite idle at Hamilton should be absorbed at Lake Erie Works."

Industry Minister 'extremely disappointed'

In a statement on Monday, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly slammed the decision to lay off workers, while noting Ottawa had offered to help Stelco weather the impact of U.S. tariffs.

"Our government has made clear to the company that we are ready and willing to provide financial support to sustain operations and protect jobs. Its decision to reject these practical proposals and continue with layoffs is extremely disappointing," she said.

"Stelco and Cleveland-Cliffs have made significant commitments to Canadian steelworkers. We will use every lever possible to defend Canadian industry, protect jobs, and secure our supply chain."

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has denied a clemency request from death row inmate Christa Pike, who is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on Wednesday.

Pike, now 50, was 18 when she and her then-boyfriend beat, tortured and murdered Colleen Slemmer, a 19-year-old they met at a job training camp for troubled teens.

She may have one last chance at halting her execution as her attorneys have filed a petition with the US Supreme Court hoping for a last-minute reprieve.

If it proceeds, Pike would be the first woman to be executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years. Only 18 women have been executed in the US since the 1970s, compared to 1,663 men.

"After deliberate consideration of Christa Gail Pike's request for clemency, and after a thorough review of the case, I am upholding the sentence of the State of Tennessee and do not plan to intervene," Governor Lee said in a statement.

Moving ahead with Pike's execution puts Tennessee "on singular footing", her attorneys said, as she would be the first person the state "executes in the modern death penalty era who was a teenager at the time of the offence".

Attorneys Stephen Ferrell, Kelly Gleason and Randy Spivey said the governor's decision "leaves unanswered vital questions about Tennessee's execution protocol".

"With this decision, the State of Tennessee is ignoring what both science and our legal system have decided: an 18-year-old brain is not an adult brain, and 18 is too young to face execution," they said in a statement on Monday.

The murder of Colleen Slemmer created a media frenzy in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1995, when the 19-year-old was found with a pentagram - a symbol of Satanic ritual - carved into her chest.

Pike had accused Colleen of insulting her and trying to steal her boyfriend. Two other residents at the camp later testified that Pike had bragged about the murder before and after, and showed them a piece of Colleen's skull.

A year later, she was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death, while then-boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp- who was 17 at the time - was given a life sentence with the possibility of parole.

At the time of her incarceration, the 21-year-old was the youngest person on death row, according to the Tennessee Department of Corrections.

Pike is scheduled to be executed on 30 September after years of failed appeals.

Colleen's mother has insisted she wants Pike's execution to move forward so that her daughter "finally can be resting".

France's Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has warned that any escalation in the country's current wave of student protests would be "irresponsible", following the arrests of 164 people on Monday.

The demonstrations, which began in Paris and have seen teenagers blockading their schools for days, stem from issues including overcrowded classes and teacher shortages.

Lecornu cited reported incidents at protests in a post on X, saying: "Fireworks, fires, violence near high schools: nothing justifies endangering students, staff, or police officers."

But a French union that defends the interests of high school students said the protests were a "legitimate response" to the conditions they face.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said 12 members of the security forces, 12 students and three school staff were injured on Monday, while 180 schools were affected.

He did not provide further details on those who had been arrested.

The movement at French lycées, equivalent to sixth form in the UK or high school in the US, began last week in the Île-de-France region around Paris.

Incidents of vandalism were reported, along with fireworks being aimed at police, and the protests have now spread to other regions in France.

According to the AFP news agency, four high schools were reported to have been blockaded in the southern regions of Alpes-Maritimes and Var. Protests have also been reported in Marseille, the northern Lille area and Sedan in the north-eastern Ardennes.

The Union Syndicale Lycéenne, which represents students, defended the protests in a post on social media.

"Lack of teachers and staff, dilapidated schools, overcrowded schedules and classes, stress caused by Parcoursup [the web platform used in France for students to apply to the first year of higher education]… These issues are by no means inevitable, but simply the result of 10 years of Macron's policies and the lack of resources in the national education system," it said.

It called on students to blockade schools on Tuesday in defence of "their rights and against budget austerity".

On the same day, unions representing teachers, hospital staff and civil servants also called for a day of walkouts to protest against issues including low wages and working conditions.

In response to the student movement, Lecornu said "the difficulties of high schools must be heard and addressed", but that "violence must be condemned unequivocally, and its perpetrators must answer for their actions".

The prime minister also accused the far-left France Unbowed (LFI) party of urging students to expand the movement.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, LFI's leader, blamed the Lecornu government for having "ordered the crackdown" on the protest, adding that the high school students taking part were "harmless".

But Nuñez said the demonstrations and blockades were "not very typical protest movements".

"It is much more like urban violence, with a number of individuals who were masked, equipped with fireworks in tubes, equipped with projectiles, who clearly wanted to confront the internal security forces," he said.

"It wasn't about making demands; it was really violence in its purest form."

Since the protests began, several incidents involving violence between students and police officers have been reported.

In one incident, a police officer reportedly fired a round from a grenade launcher used for crowd control, injuring a high school student, according to France's BFMTV.

Investigations have been launched into these incidents, the broadcaster added.

Huckabee Announces Update on New US Embassy in Jerusalem Project

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee announced on Sunday that the United States will soon be breaking ground on a permanent embassy in Jerusalem.

In 2018, President Donald Trump moved the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, becoming the first nation to do so. The change officially occurred on May 14, the 70th anniversary of Israel declaring its independence after the British Mandate governing the territory ended in 1948.

The U.S. embassy is currently in what was America’s consulate in the city.

Huckabee announced during a Sukkot reception for foreign diplomats hosted by Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion on Sunday, “We will soon be breaking ground on our property to begin the construction of the US embassy that will be our permanent home rather than being spread out all over the country,” The Jerusalem Post reported.

“It is our commitment as the United States of America and a partner of Israel to say that we are going to put a permanent imprint in this city,” Huckabee added.

Huckabee told Israeli media personality Menachem Toker at the event, “For 3,000 years, this has been the capital of Israel, the capital of the Jewish people, and it forever will be.”

Regarding the new embassy, he noted, “It will be our permanent and forever here in Jerusalem.”

Huckabee said in a July 1 news release after signing the agreement for the land for the U.S. embassy, “Today is another historic day for the U.S.-Israel relationship as the U.S. receives the property that will be the future home of the new U.S. Embassy complex — deepening and expanding our presence in Jerusalem — the eternal capital of Israel.”

“The U.S. will construct a magnificent and beautiful new U.S. Embassy complex that will support our indispensable partnership with Israel. I was quite confused by this distinctly European approachuntil I had dinner with a Chinese actuary working in the auto warranty insurance industry.

Europe asks China to voluntarily limit exports (mostly autos) to the European Union. Europe doesn’t want to get China angry with them about this issue.

However, China is sending massive numbers of EVs into Europe.Europe is losing its auto business. I couldn’t figure out why the EU didn’t take an aggressive/confrontational position.

Then I was reminded. Europe cannot force Beijing through a trade action (tariffs, ban, EU limit etc.)because Beijing might stop selling them EV carbon credits. If the European automakers cannot purchase Chinese EV carbon credit certificates, the fines levied by Brussels against gasoline powered autos will destroy the EU auto business.

Think about this for a while, then read the EU media report:

EuroNews – Brussels is pressing Beijing to accept quotas on Chinese exports as negotiations enter their final stretch, with the EU threatening trade measures unless tangible progress is made by next month.

Brussels and Beijing are fighting over quotas that would limit Chinese imports to the EU market, as the Europeans seek to rebalance their trade relationship with China, Euronews has learned.

Both started intense negotiations last June over EU and Chinese access to each other’s markets, with an October deadline set by the European Commission to reach “tangible” results. However, China is pushing hard against the EU’s attempts to protect its market.

According to one person familiar with the matter, the Commission, which is negotiating on behalf of the 27 EU countries on trade issues, wants China to accept quotas on specific products. However, it is unclear how China would accept and respect such quotas.

According to media reports,so-called “voluntary export restrictions”have been pushed by the Commission for electric vehicles. But Beijing’s trade minister rejected them in a statement earlier this month.

If China accepted such a system of restrictions, it would mean that it voluntarily limits its exports to the EU on the basis of a deal negotiated with the Commission, sparing the EU from adopting defensive trade measures that might be seen as an aggressive move by China.

You would think that Europe would just get rid of the net-zero carbon regulations until they can stabilize their market and get back to a reasonable energy policy. Alas, that would mean reversing decades of climate change legislation. The preferred route is to ask Beijing to limit hurting them.

Russia’s parliamentary elections have shown that its people cannot be intimidated or defeated, President Vladimir Putin has said.

Speaking at a Kremlin meeting with the leadership of political parties on Monday, Putin said attempts to disrupt the election campaign and interfere in the country’s internal affairs had failed, adding that “terrorist methods and instruments of foreign intelligence services” had been used.

The September 18-20 vote was accompanied by a massive Ukrainian drone raid targeting Moscow and other Russian regions on its final day. Russian officials said more than 1,600 UAVs were repelled, including 450 on approaches to the capital. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin described the attack as “unprecedented” and said it had been intended to disrupt the elections. At least two civilians were reported killed in Moscow Region.

Putin thanked tens of millions of Russians for taking part in the vote, saying the turnout had ensured the “indisputable, unquestionable legitimacy” of the election.

“People here are strong, courageous and educated; everyone understands perfectly well what is happening around Russia,” Putin said.“It became clear that such people cannot be intimidated. And it is impossible to defeat such people, such a country. Therefore, victory will undoubtedly be ours.”

The president also said the vote had demonstrated public support for Russian troops, noting that candidates who had taken part in the Ukraine conflict had won seats in parliament.

The ruling United Russia party secured 355 of the State Duma’s 450 seats.

Separately on Monday, Putin signed a decree increasing the authorized strength of theRussian Armed Forces to 2,441,630 personnel, including 1,550,500 servicemen. The measure adds 15,500 positions compared with the previous decree.
