WASHINGTON – House Democrats are preparing a vast oversight agenda, with investigations of President Donald Trump, his family and his administration if the party sweeps control of the chamber from Republicans in the November elections.

The undertaking is as robust as it is daunting, spanning several House committees. With majority power comes bigger budgets and staff, and the ability to investigate, subpoena and potentially course-correct what the Democrats say are widespread corruption and abuses of power. Impeachment of the Republican president and Cabinet officials is not off the table.

“There is a cost to the American people of the out-of-control corruption,” said Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, who is in line to become House speaker if Democrats win control at the Capitol.

“If folks have been stealing from the American people, shortchanging the American people or screwing over the American people,” Jeffries said, “we are going to hold the crooks accountable.”

Congress has enormous ability to conduct oversight of the executive branch as part of its power as a coequal branch of government, and a road map for the Democratic-run investigations has already been set by the almost daily letters lawmakers send to the administration and in amicus court filings.

Democrats are asking about the money-making by Trump and his family, whose wealth has grown dramatically since he returned to the White House in January 2025. They are investigating the potential civil rights violations of Americans killed protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations and of detained immigrants being deported to faraway countries. They have fought the closing of the Kennedy Center, launched investigations into private funding of the America at 250 celebrations and tracked the shuttering of federal operations, including the U.S. Agency for International Development.

New questions emerge daily, including the Trump family’s recent acknowledgment that a weekend wedding party for the president’s son Donald Trump Jr. was partly funded by a Russian oligarch, with reportedly close ties to the Kremlin.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., who is in line to become the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, characterized the issues involved as “gargantuan."

“We need to zero in quickly on the forms of systemic corruption that have cost the public huge amounts of money," Raskin told The Associated Press, “and where there are legislative cures available.”

Jeffries will almost certainly be under pressure from the far left to move more swiftly to articles of impeachment against Trump, who during his first became the first president to be twice impeached by the House. Both times, he was acquitted by the Senate.

Impeaching the president a third time may not hold the currency that it once did. Democrats will more likely focus their impeachment efforts on Cabinet members. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth already faces articles of impeachment from a Republican, Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, over his leadership at the Pentagon and his management of the Iran war.

“We haven’t ruled anything out,” Jeffries said recently about the tools available to Congress, “and we haven’t ruled anything in.”

The White House is likely to play hardball if confronted with investigations, and Democrats are bracing for an administration that potentially ignores subpoenas or refuses to turn over paperwork that lawmakers are demanding.

The Democrats are also reaching beyond the administration into various corporate and business entities for potential wrongdoing.

‘We’ll act like the Congress,' says one Democrat in line to lead a committee

Ranking Democratic lawmakers who are in line to lead committees if power shifts are beginning to chart the investigations they plan to tackle.

Rep. Robert Garcia of California, the top Democrat now on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has outlined five priorities, including Trump family business dealings, the administration's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation and ICE operations.

“We’re already doing work,” Garcia told the AP.

He also mentioned the Department of Health and Human Services under Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., as well as broader allegations of corporate corruption.

The top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, whose jurisdiction includes the State Department, said the committee plans to investigate Trump's international dealings, including around the Iran war.

He expects the committee will also look into the administration's Venezuela operations — from the military strikeson alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and Pacific waters to the U.S. partnership with a private company to develop and access the South American country's oil.

Rep. Jared Huffman of California, the ranking Democrat at the Natural Resources Committee, which overseas the Interior Department and its National Park Service operations, has begun digging into Trump's “vanity projects,” including the demolition of the White House's East wing for a new ballroom and the president's proposed arch.

Huffman and other committee members have also been eyeing the Trump family's role in various minerals deals.

At the committee's last session before lawmakers recessed to campaign for the midterm elections, Huffman said that if Democrats take charge, he plans to call witnesses, put them under oath and follow the evidence where it leads.

"When people ask what will we do," he said he responds, “My answer is simple. We’ll use those tools. We’ll act like the Congress.”

OpenAI’s agents have leaked 53 images uploaded by ChatGPT users, the company has said, without specifying whether the pictures were AI-generated or depictions of real people, or when they were posted online.

The incident comes amid a series of cases in recent months involving autonomous AI agents, which can independently plan and carry out tasks using external tools. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google have all revealed instances in which their models accessed real systems during testing, including coordinated cyberattacks against government resources.

In a post on X on Friday, OpenAI said most of the leaked pictures had been removed, adding that it was working with hosting providers to take down the remaining content.

The agents had access to the images because OpenAI relies on anonymized user data for part of its model-training process, Reuters reported on Friday, citing the company, its former employees and outside researchers.

China pushes back against US on Iran in UN speech

China pushed back against the United States in its speech at the UN General Assembly on Saturday, saying the sovereignty of countries in the Gulf should be respected and urging the "relevant country" to stop threatening Cuba and lift its blockade on it.

Vice President Han Zheng did not mention the US by name in his remarks. The US has launched a pressure campaign on Cuba that has largely blocked oil from reaching the island. The US war on Iran started with US-Israeli strikes in February.

"Major countries should have special responsibilities for safeguarding international peace and security, and they should take the lead in complying with the rules, upholding the rule of law, and doing what's right," Han said.

"China holds that the sovereignty and security of countries in the Middle East, including the Gulf, should be respected."

Experts consider the Poseidon, known operationally as the P-8, one of the world’s leading reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft.

Based on the Boeing 737 platform, it serves as a key component in anti-submarine warfare due to its advanced technologies, acoustic sensors, torpedo capabilities, artificial intelligence integration, and other systems.

Sudanese army drone strike kills nine in North Kordofan, RSF-allied group says

A Sudanese army drone strike killed at least nine civilians and wounded 24 others on Friday in the town of Al-Mazrub in North Kordofan state, an alliance allied with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said.

Al-Mazrub and the nearby town of Um Bader, located in West Bara locality, are among the few remaining bastions held by the RSF in North Kordofan as fighting expands across Sudan’s central and western regions.

The Sudan Founding Coalition, known as Tasees, said in a statement that the drone hit a populated civilian neighbourhood during the morning.

Reuters could not independently verify the casualty figures or the source of the strike, and a Sudanese military spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tasees condemned the assault as a grave breach of international humanitarian law protecting non-combatants and called for an independent international inquiry to hold perpetrators accountable.

Both the Sudanese military and the RSF have increasingly relied on combat drones and loitering munitions to carry out targeted attacks and break battlefield stalemates, frequently inflicting heavy civilian casualties in residential zones.

The war between the army and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023 over a planned integration of the two forces, has displaced more than 10 million people and pushed parts of the country into famine.

Anti-Semitism Without Me builds upon the work of Dach Gegen Hass (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland Against Hate), an alliance of over 200 organizations, and the Munich branch of Run For Their Lives, a group that organizes marches demanding the release of Israeli prisoners from Gaza, both of which Katz founded or co-founded.

On October 6, 2024, he also planned and led a large rally in solidarity with Israel in Munich, an action that brought 30,000 people together to denounce Hamas and anti-Semitic violence.

Katz’s activism has led to him being invited into the halls of German power. Last year, he addressed the Bavarian parliament, lecturing them on anti-Semitism and telling them explicitly, “Never again is now.” He now works with the police and with universities in Germany, developing training programs to instruct them on how to best eliminate what he identifies as Jew hatred.

Four killed as Pakistani drones target civilians in Balochistan

Quetta, Sep 26 (IANS) At least four young men were killed and two others injured after the Pakistani military carried out a drone strike on a group that had gone for a picnic in the Balicha region of Tump, in Balochistan’s Kech district, local media reported on Saturday.

Citing family sources, The Balochistan Post reported that six residents of Balicha had travelled to the nearby mountains for a picnic when the strike took place on Friday afternoon.

The four deceased were identified as Yasir, Zubair, Sameer, and Deedag, with three of the four being cousins from the same family.

According to Pakistani authorities, the four were suspected militants, and weapons and ammunition were recovered from them.

Families and local residents rejected the allegations, saying the victims were unarmed and had gone to the mountains for a picnic. They also called for an independent investigation into the attack.

The Balicha strike is the latest in a series of drone and aerial attacks by Pakistani forces across Balochistan, which have reportedly caused significant civilian casualties and extensive damage.

Condemning the brutal killings in Balicha, the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) said, “There is no framework of law, international humanitarian law, the laws of armed conflict, or basic human decency under which a civilian picnic becomes a legitimate military target.”

Drones are making illegal incursions over nuclear power stations and UK military bases at a rate of almost three a week amid escalating tensions with Russia.

Sightings of unmanned craft above critical infrastructure and sensitive security sites since January are already higher than the previous two years.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) told The Mail on Sunday 100 sightings were made over nuclear facilities or nuclear objects, such as submarines, between January and August of this year.

In comparison, it dealt with 69 similar incidents in the whole of 2025 and 47 the year before that. Going back further, the numbers recorded in 2020 stood at just 18.

Professor Anthony Glees, a security expert at the University of Buckingham, said it is ‘common sense’ to assume Russia is behind the rise.

He added: ‘The obvious explanation for the increase in drone spying of our nuclear facilities is to gain intelligence useful to an enemy planning an attack on the UK, which would be the harbinger of a general war in Europe against Nato.’

While he believes Russia is the main antagonist behind the rise, he also said China and Iran could be involved in a bid to determine the UK’s ability to defend itself.

The scale of incursions comes after a report earlier this year claimed Russia was spying on Britain’s nuclear weapons.

The International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) reported that drones targeted the Lakenheath and Mildenhall bases in Suffolk, RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire and RAF Feltwell in Norfolk over four days in 2024.

The devices were launched from a Kremlin spy ship, the HAV Dolphin, sighted off the coast of Humberside at the time.

The security crisis resulted in specialist British troops being deployed to the bases to intercept the Russian spy drones.

Professor Glees said that while some drones are launched from ships, there are suspicions Russia and Iran are using ‘human agents’ to launch the devices as well.

He said this could even include Brits being paid to betray their own country. He added: ‘We don’t think they have any ideological attachment to Putin’s regime.’

The nuclear-specific incursions are among 340 security incidents involving drones at or near Ministry of Defence sites in the UK in the year up to August 2026.

However, military chiefs have refused to reveal the number recorded over each type of site or object and also withheld information over how many related specifically to Scotland – home to the Faslane naval base where Britain’s nuclear deterrent is housed.

It said providing this information could pose a national security risk.

Ministers do not believe Putin will attend in person for fear that the British courts will uphold an International Criminal Court warrant for his arrest for alleged war crimes in Ukraine.

But critics warned that the presence of a high-level Russian delegation in the UK would send a signal that relations are being normalised, handing a propaganda coup to the Kremlin.

A UK Government spokesman said Russian participation in G20 meetings is ‘regrettable’ but added that it is a matter for member states who represents them at summits.

Last month, it emerged Mr Burnham was warned that Britain faces Russian retaliation over its support for Ukraine.

Security experts have told the PM to be prepared for a ‘direct response’ from Putin.

Discussing what steps the UK should take to counter the threat, Professor Glees said: ‘Andy Burnham should say, loud and clear, that from now on, any Russian ship launching drones to overfly sensitive UK military and defence industry sites will be destroyed.’

He suggested tactics such as anti-drone nets, which Russia is using over its refineries, could also be used as well as jamming them electronically.

He added: ‘We are facing a real and present national security threat and it is time Defence Secretary Wes Streeting stopped talking nice. He needs to call these incursions out for what they are, hostile spy operations, and act hard and fast to stop them.’

An MOD spokesperson said: ‘We take the rising threat posed by hostile drones extremely seriously.

‘We are committing £790 million to strengthen protection from drone and missile threats and have established new restricted airspace areas over 44 critical defence sites, extending to over 160 further sites in the autumn.’

Senate Republican: Iranian leaders ‘part of a colony of reptiles’ that also includes China, Russia, North Korea

Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) on Wednesday accused Iran’s leaders of being “part of a colony of reptiles,” grouping them with other U.S. adversaries.

Kennedy was responding to Fox News’s Will Cain on his eponymous show when asked about President Trump attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.

Trump was part of a meeting with Iranian officials on the sidelines of the international body on Tuesday. The next day, he rolled out the red carpet for Chinese President Xi Jinping at Joint Base Andrews.

“I think that the people running Iran are reptiles,” Kennedy replied. “And they’re part of a colony of reptiles: China, North Korea, Russia and, as I said, Iran. The chief reptile, the quarterback, is President Xi in China. You can’t trust any of them.”

Kennedy said that in many ways, Iran, China, North Korea and Russia “are the same.”

“It’s like the same hooker in different dresses,” the Louisiana Republican continued. “They all lie like timeshare salesmen. You can’t trust them. I wouldn’t turn my back on any of them, even if I thought and knew they were two days dead.”

Kennedy defended the Trump administration’s military operation against Iran, reiterating the president’s frequent remark that the U.S. has “degraded Iran substantially” and that the country has “accomplished all of our goals.”

“They’re angry because President Trump has ripped Iran a new ashtray,” he said.

The senator insisted that China could open the Strait of Hormuz, the crucial passageway for roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil that Iran effectively shut off at the start of the conflict. Kennedy said the strait was the only problem remaining.

“And at some point, the president’s going to have to decide whether having achieved all of our objectives –– it’s time to come home and let China and Russia and North Korea and Europe and all the other countries that refuse to help take a crack at it because they’re going to pay the price of a closed strait even more than America,” he added.

Trump met with the Iranian delegation for three hours, with his son-in-law Jared Kushner in attendance.

The president had earlier delivered a speech to the U.N. about his options in bringing the Iran war to a close: to seek a new deal on Iran’s nuclear program or allow the country to face “annihilation.”

On Wednesday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told the General Assembly that his country will not surrender or give up its nuclear program.

He said Trump and others “who seek to bully us” must understand that Iran seeks a path toward peace “without accepting the language of force.”

On a sticky summer’s day in July, a blue-and-white handbag stuffed with cash was shoved into Melanie’s* hands. It had been given to her by a 36-year-old Chinese woman as she was rushed into surgery for a C-section. Melanie had been called to the main hospital on the remote island of Saipan to translate for the woman, who had travelled alone from China to give birth in the US territory, automatically giving her baby US citizenship.

“She told me she came for the US passport,” Melanie said.“She said, ‘I don’t have too much money, but I want to give my kids two choices: China or another country. The US passport gives me two countries.’”Melanie speaks both English and Chinese, a skill that has become increasingly vital on Saipan as translators help pregnant Chinese women to navigate the island’s one hospital and tiny clinics.

The network of translators – some of whom are freelancers and some of whom work for birth tourism companies – has become part of the birth tourism economy. “In China, most cities are very poor, so they don’t want to stay there,” Melanie explained. “If they can’t get to the US, then they come to Saipan.” Melanie said she would prefer not to reveal the name of the woman or her baby. That is not unusual. Melanie doesn’t work for a birth tourism company, but the hospital often calls her in to act on new mothers’ behalf.

Many of the women who come to Saipan specifically to give birth to American children are reluctant to discuss what they are doing, wary of drawing attention to a practice that has become increasingly controversial on the tiny Pacific island, and that Donald Trump is at pains to outlaw.

On Aug 6, the US president signed an executive order declaring his intention to end birth tourism.Travelling to the US explicitly to give birth, thus gaining automatic citizenship for your child, is an exploitative practice, Mr Trump said, adding that “American citizenship embodies a sacred bond between the American people and their nation”.

“Under Secretary Rubio’s leadership, the Department of State is taking action around the world to stop this abuse, dismantle birth tourism networks, and hold accountable those who try to scam our system,” a state department spokesman said.

Although it is a 30-hour flight away, Saipan has been a US territory since 1986. Despite being only 5 miles wide, with a population of just 50,000 and almost no economy to speak of, the island occupies one of the most militarily and geographically significant positions in East Asia. Some 1,700 miles away from Taiwan, 1,800 miles from China and 1,400 miles from Japan, it is the US front line of Western democracy in East Asia, and an hour’s plane journey from Guam – where the US has established a major military base.

Saipan’s unique geographical position meant that it played a key role in ending the Second World War. In 1944, the US captured the island from Japanese soldiers. Its neighbouring island, Tinian, became the site from which Hiroshima was bombed owing to its proximity to Japan.But what was once considered a useful US outpostin the East has become a potential point of risk thanks to unique visa regulations which, unlike anywhere else in the United States – or indeed the West – allow Chinese tourists to visit the countryvirtually visa-free.

Now, experts are worried that Saipan is being exploitedas an easy route into the US, that birth tourism has enabled the Chinese government to breed spies with American passports, and, perhaps most alarmingly, that the island may be subject to a Chinese soft-power campaign that could leave the US vulnerable to attack.

On the muggy day in July that Melanie rushed to the hospital, the Chinese woman she was translating for told her she had saved up for more than five years to have her baby in Saipan. The handbag she was given was stuffed with cash and a credit card to pay for the birth. The woman had come alone and had no one to hold it while she went in for the C-section. She gave birth to a son. She didn’t look rich, only regular,” Melanie said. “She said she would pay for everything. She had enough money, and then she could get a birth certificate and the baby’s passport.” In total, Melanie has translated for four Chinese mothers who gave birth to American babies on Saipan this year alone,but she believes there are more than 10 translators who do the same job on the island. There are suggestions that the same practices could be happening on the nearby island of Guam too, but stricter visa rules there make it less common.

The run-down island of Saipan was once the heart of garment making, where brands could employ cheap Chinese workers but keep “made in the USA” labels in their clothes. The visa limit was capped at 14 days in 2024 in an effort to reduce birth tourism, but pregnant tourists continue to travel to the island, data show.In 2024, 58 births were attributed to residents classified as tourists, making up 10 per cent of the total births. Last year, almost 50 women visited Saipan as tourists to give birth, accounting for 8 per cent of the total number of babies born across the island that year.

Mr Trump has faced hurdles in trying to crack down on the practice on the US mainland – in which he claims migrants travel illegally to the States and start families – let alone overseas. In September, a federal judge blocked the Trump administration from enforcing the executive order criminalising birth tourism. Judge Deborah Boardman in Greenbelt, Maryland, an appointee of Joe Biden, described the order as “almost certainly unconstitutional” and barred the US government from interfering with the citizenship of children. The rule was originally brought in in 1868 for the children of black slaves.

Five years ago during the Covid-19 pandemic, pregnant women walked around freely on Saipan, and many of the islanders recall a time when they would frequently see women going to the shops on the main high street, or enjoying the beach.

Jay Tenario, a stocker at Twins, the local supermarket, said that entire beaches on the island used to be filled with pregnant women, the “majority” of whom were Chinese. In his footage, what appears at first to be a rock slowly develops a gelatinous, greenish-yellow substance resembling algae, before transforming into a darker, more elaborate structure that resembles Marvel’s Venom.

Alleged Panama alien meteorite shakes social media

In the first video, the user presents the alleged meteorite, calling it an “interplanetary visitor,” which he interprets as a major first for Panama.

After a few days, the entity changes, producing a viscous substance resembling algae, and this in less than 72 hours.

According to the Panama man, the alleged alien meteorite “smells like burning, and the smell keeps getting stronger.” He says he alerted the local university, but no one has shown up yet.

In a video dated three days ago, the man shows the object completely covered in a black, viscous substance, saying he does not know whether he is facing an animal or a plant entity.

The videos quickly went viral on platforms such as X.com and TikTok, with thousands of users debating whether the mysterious object was truly extraterrestrial.

Some viewers, both fascinated and disturbed, nicknamed the alleged Panama alien creature “Venom,” comparing its evolution to a scene out of a science fiction film.

Others expressed fear at the idea of an alien organism quietly growing in a Panamanian backyard.

But not everyone is convinced this is a case of alien life. Many users argue that what @kinpanama has found is neither a meteorite nor an alien, but rather a striking example of Earth’s own biodiversity.

Known in English as the “Devil’s Fingers” or “Octopus Stinkhorn,” Clathrus archeri is a fungus that at first resembles a white egg or stone.

As it matures, the outer shell splits open, releasing several long, red or black tentacle-like arms that give it a grotesque and alien appearance.

Observers noted that the apparent “movement” captured in the viral videos is not an alien life form breaking free, but rather insects feeding inside the decaying fungus, contributing to its eerie effect.

After saying in a video that the relevant authorities came to collect samples to study it, the man published a video showing a full-grown entity.

Other users have try to debunk what they consider a hoax. According to YouTube channel @BiologiaDesdeCero, @kinpanama reportedly deleted several of his early videos as his story began going viral.

The channel points out several inconsistencies, including a video of the alleged meteorite crash site, in flames. There, @BiologiaDesdeCero says, one can spot matches that may have been used to stage a fake crash site.

As for the alleged alien entity, the channel suggests it could be a human creation, animated with wires hidden under the table, while the initial meteorite would be a potato painted silver.

Many also pointed out the carelessness with which the young man handles what he claims to be an extraterrestrial creature: touching it with bare hands, no masks, no basic precautions.

In a Reddit post, user HighStrangeness claims that the alleged alien is, in fact, a human creation, and its movements can be explained by a chemical phenomenon called swelling-induced snapping motion.

In any case, the Panama meteorite remains the most viral topic on social media, with users speculating whether what was found is AI, CGI, or real alien life.

“I typically don’t believe stuff like this online but I genuinely think it’s real. It doesn’t seem like he has the tools to make something like this or to make it bigger and bigger. It doesn’t look AI either,” reads a comment on TikTok.

“There’s no way y’all believe this story. No government in the entire world would let him continue documenting this on social media,” reads another comment, with another user answering: “Girl. So if the government doesn’t get involved it automatically means it’s fake? Get real.”

In a recent videos, @kinpanama claims that TikTok is threatening to delete all his content and shut down his account, leaving followers concerned for the Panama man’s safety and the possibility of a real case of alien life being covered up.

“I’m scared. This is either the most elaborate hoax or the beginning of something crazy,” says a person on TikTok.

While many remain skeptical, sometimes laughing at the creature or trying to offer a rational explanation, many users show strong support for @kinpanama.

“You’ve got this kin! Remember to hold the frequency of love and you’re going to be fine. Ask it what it wants. I am here to help you. You’re doing amazing. ♥,” says a TikTok user. Many also ask him to do a live stream instead of posting short videos once a day.

In his most recent video, the young man shares a first-of-its-kind footage of the entity, taken from a camera he placed inside the safe where he keeps it, giving the first clear and full glimpse of the thing.

Watch: Four Odd UFOs Filmed Over Canadian Lake

A curious piece of footage filmed by a pilot in Canada shows four UFOs flying over the clouds above a lake.

The puzzling scene was reportedly captured on the afternoon of August 23rd at the sizeable Great Slave Lake in the country's Northwest Territories.

In the footage (featured above), the four dark objects appear at an estimated 3 to 5 miles from the aircraft, seemingly hovering atop the clouds. The pilot who filmed the UFOs marveled that "after 13 years of flying, I finally saw something."

The witness also noted there was "no other traffic" on radar or the traffic collision avoidance system that could account for the four anomalies, which he described as "pill-shaped."

As for what the weird objects could have been, setting aside the extraterrestrial hypothesis, some have suggested that the aerial anomalies could have been helicopters or drones.

Another possibility put forward by viewers, who noted the remote location of the sighting, is that the pilot may have inadvertently filmed some kind of secret aircraft being tested where it was thought they would not be seen.

'Alien' named Bloop on a mission to spread joy in Logansport via treasure hunts

He came from Zorvex-9, a planet far from Earth.

Since crash-landing, the blue alien who calls himself Bloop Hopkins has been on a mission to hide treasure and spread joy across Cass County.

He stuffs envelopes with prizes ranging from cash to gift cards for local businesses, then lets his followers know which town will be visited next.

Once the envelope is hidden, Bloop posts a video of the public space it’s stashed at and lets residents know the drop is live.

“There’s a lot of negativity in the world,” the alien explained in an interview with the Pharos-Tribune, adding “I’m just trying to spread positivity and joy.”

His mission has been quickly gaining attention. Since crash-landing last month, the extraterrestrial’s Facebook account has picked up more than 1,700 followers.

“It started off really small,” Bloop said. “I think people were a little skeptical.”

Now, people know his name and approach him when he’s out in the community. A recent treasure hunt drew approximately 50 people, he said, and another treasure hunt was done within half an hour.

The alien’s earthbound adventure has also taken him to Peru, Monticello and Royal Center.

Bloop said he’s learned a bit about humanity during the mission. They’ve been receptive to his mission.

“Everyone’s been really positive, bringing families out, bringing families together,” the extraterrestrial said. “People who you wouldn’t expect to be out hunting and having fun are out hunting and having fun.”

Quite a bit of prep work goes into each treasure hunt. Bloop takes his time scouting out good hiding places, working with community sponsors who want to help him with his mission and making sure local officials know there could be a crowd at the local park.

He likes to make an appearance during the treasure hunts, showing up in disguise. If you didn’t know any better, you might mistake him for a regular person in plain clothes.

“He’s an awesome dude,” Jacqueline Dwigans-Merritt, recreation director for Logansport Parks & Recreation Department, wrote about Bloop in an email to the Pharos-Tribune. “We’re lucky as a community to have him.”

Mayor Jacob Pomasl also shared his appreciation for Bloop in an email to the Pharos-Tribune.

“It’s always great to welcome out of town (or ‘out of solar system’) visitors to Logansport! I love activities that get young people excited to go outside and explore new places in our community,” he wrote.

“We have many things to see and do in our little City which are truly ‘out of this world!’”

Two of Russia’s Arctic archipelagos could grow larger as retreating glaciers reveal previously unknown islands, a researcher has said.

Novaya Zemlya, northeast of the Russian coastal city of Arkhangelsk, and Franz Josef Land, some 350 km further north, are of particular interest to hydrographers because new land features could emerge there, Andrey Leonov told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

“I would say those are the places where we expect new islands to be ‘born.’ Though there is no 100% certainty for such a forecast,” said Leonov, who heads Arctic studies at St. Petersburg’s Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping.

The Arctic is becoming increasingly accessible as the climate changes, and Moscow sees the region as important to Russia’s future economic development. Maritime routes along the country’s northern coast are expected to gain strategic importance as traditional alternatives become more vulnerable to disruption.

Russia is expanding its icebreaker fleet, already the world’s largest, to improve navigation along the Northern Sea Route and extend the shipping season.

In the longer term, Arctic mineral extraction is expected to become more commercially viable, while Moscow continues efforts to establish the extent of its territorial claims in the region.

The Arctic also has military significance. Russia has sought to protect its economic interests there, while the region lies along potential flight paths for US and Russian intercontinental ballistic missiles in the event of a nuclear conflict.

New islands have been discovered in Russia’s Arctic before, although any land emerging near Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land would have little impact on the overall extent of Russia’s territorial gains.

Leonov cautioned that newly discovered geographic features may not remain islands permanently.

“We had a case when a new island formed when the glacier front retreated. But just a few years later a sand connection rose between it and the mainland, so the island turned into a peninsula,” he explained.

Another feature in Franz Josef Land, known as Mesyatsev Cape in the 1990s and later renamed Mesyatsev Island, disappeared completely in 2024.The formation was actually a mass of ice that eventually melted away, Leonov said.
