Ukrainian Investigative Journalist Who Asked 'Inconvenient Questions' Dies After Attack

An investigative journalist in Ukraine's central city of Cherkasy has died six weeks after being attacked by an unknown assailant.

 

Serhiy Tomilenko, the head of Ukraine's National Union of Journalists, wrote in a posting on Facebook on June 20 that Vadym Komarov had succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the May 4 attack, which remains under investigation.

 

"The only reason for the attack, now the killing, according to journalists in Cherkasy, is Vadym Komarov's professional activities. He was inconvenient for many local politicians. He pushed forward with inconvenient questions regarding corruption in Cherkasy and touched on topics that resonated," Tomilenko wrote.

 

Tomilenko added that the journalists' union "continues to demand real, not just declared, protection of rights for Ukrainian journalists."

 

Komarov was hospitalized and underwent unspecified surgery following the attack in Cherkasy, about 200 kilometers (120 miles) south of Kyiv, and had remained in a coma ever since.

 

International media freedom watchdogs have urged Kyiv to thoroughly investigate the attack and ensure that it does not go unpunished.

Woman Arrested In Airport Bomb Scare Claims She Was Spiritual Adviser To Obama

One of two American women arrested in St. John’s for allegedly making threatening and defamatory Twitter posts claims she is a “spiritual adviser” to former US presidents.

 

It isn’t clear why 28-year-old Hepzibah Nanna of Maryland came to the province, but her arrest has been gaining attention south of the border. Her co-accused is 42-year-old Sharyn Richardson of Texas. Both women were arrested Sunday morning at St. John’s International Airport.

 

Hepzibah Nanna claims she is a Revivalist, Evangelist, and “spiritual adviser” to Bill & Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

 

She goes by “Revivalist Hepzibah Nanna” on Facebook, and has over 90,000 followers. She proclaims herself “lovesick” for Jesus, and has created an online ministry, posting video sermons.

 

Nanna runs a website, called “Lion Triumph Ministries,” that indicates she is currently on a “2019 Revival Tour,” with a stop in PEI in June, but there isn’t a firm date attached. She asks followers to donate using PayPal to help with the travel expenses.

 

Meanwhile the two women were released from custody yesterday on strict conditions. Their next court date is August 2.

Sacramento police officer shot during domestic call has died

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A Sacramento police officer who was shot and seriously wounded Wednesday evening by a rifleman who blasted away at officers trying to rescue her has died, police said.

 

Tara O’Sullivan, 26, died at UC Davis Medical Center hours after a gunman opened fire on her, Deputy Chief Dave Peletta said during a news conference early Thursday.

 

Several officers were on a domestic disturbance call, helping a woman collect her belongings and leave a home in the north Sacramento neighborhood, when the officer was wounded, Sgt. Vance Chandler said. The other woman wasn’t hurt and the relationship between her and the gunman wasn’t immediately known.

 

She lay in the backyard of a home and officers couldn’t reach her because the gunman kept firing, Chandler said.

 

“Our officers maintained cover in safe positions until we were able to get an armored vehicle in the area,” he said.

 

It took more than 45 minutes to get her to the hospital, he said.

 

Peletta said O’Sullivan was partnered with a training officer when she was shot just before 6 p.m. He did not offer any more information.

Premise: reparations are impossible to administer.

 

I want someone ON THE PRO SIDE of using my tax dollars for reparations to address each case I list with a logical answer.

Item 2- If you were a black slave owned by a black do you get reparations?

 

Item 3- If a slave of African origin escaped from a non-US Carribean sugar plantation and immgrated to the USA, then are US citizens repsonsible since the slave labor benefit was realized by another nation's (Carribean, French, Dutch) sugar plantation?

 

Item 4- What if the modern american has both slave and slave owner ancestry? Do they only get half (or none) reparation since their family also directly benefitted from slave ownership?

 

Item 5- What about slaves that are not african? Slavery is not a condition of race.

 

Item 6- How does the government assess african immgrants that arrived in the USA after Slavery was abolished? They were never slaves. They should not recieive reparations in any manner.

 

Item 7 - My ancestors were Irish slaves.

My ancestors were also pre ww1 Germans and Poles and Canadians who never owned a slave.

Is my reparation only a fraction? Are reparations only for slaves of african ancestry? If so, reparations are a racist policy and is about wealth transfer and nothing to do with slave reparations.

 

If we want to talk reparations, it wasn't Americans selling them and it wasn't Americans shipping them. Most, if not all African slaves were Prisoners of War from other African Tribes. Look to modern day slave markets in Libyia. Who runs those markets? Answer is Muslims. The Progency of African slaves should have a much bigger grievence with Muslims who were responsible for 100% of the slave markets compare to 4% of US citizens (pre 1865 4% not modern 4%) who owned slaves.

Last night I had a random thought popped into my head, thinking about consciousness,

That's a rather confused way of looking at things. First "elites" are not always "elites." Wealth is a measure of your contribution to society and/or economy. Many "elites" are about to find that we don't really need their "services" and that their value rapidly contracts.

One Year Ago Today: Suspicious ‘food poisoning’ at V-Week 2016

It is not very well known to those who were not at V-Week-2016 – but hundreds of NXIVM students know it was real.

 

Last year at V-Week 2016, an illness struck the students.

 

It was after Promotions and into the second week, when almost everyone got some kind of illness. It appeared to be food poisoning. Or perhaps it was a strange flu. People began projectile vomiting and had diarrhea.

 

Parents gave it to their children. All the children got sick, and some of them passed it back again to their parents. All of Rainbow was wiped out. Even some of the Proctors got sick.

 

But Keith Raniere a/ka/ The Vanguard and Nancy Salzman a/k/a The Prefect and the “higher ups” did NOT get sick. Lauren Salzman and Emiliano Salinas, who had taken over the MC duties because Clare Bronfman was not there in 2016, seemed unfazed by the illness that seemed to spread everywhere.

The top brass of NIXVM ordered all who were sick to go to their rooms. People were told they were not allowed to leave their rooms.

The leaders of NXIVM explained they were concerned about Pam Cafritz who was very sick. [She died within four months of renal cancer]. They said they were worried that if anybody came into contact with her, it might kill her. People were essentially quarantined in their rooms.

The grounds looked like a Zombie Apocalypse with toys left all over; towels left out. It looked like people once lived there and deserted Silver Bay. Some Vancouver students organized a triage center and brought Gatorade to the sick people’s rooms to prevent dehydration.

The illness was still lingering when people left at the end of V-Week 2016. Some were afraid to drive or fly home, frightened they would have another attack of diarrhea heading back to Albany or wherever it was they called home.

When students left, the leaders told them not to tell anybody what happened. They were told to say that it was a flu, but not to use the language “food poisoning”.

Those whose minds leap to thoughts of conspiracy have suggested that Keith, the scientist, may have experimented with the food to learn some important lesson about human reaction.

It might have been a drug experimentation on Keith’s part.

People who think the worst of Keith said maybe he meant to intentionally hasten Pam’s death. It is well known she is wealthy. It is said he inherited her estate.

The real blood lines live among you, anon. I'll simply put it at that, as I've done enough grandstanding for today.

 

I'm not going to enter into a "poor pitiful me" debate as there's one at least every bread.

There are numerous changes coming - but what I will say is that the key to success for families is multi-fold.

First - think generationally. A son or daughter who must pay rent to another is money that is being paid from your children's future. Children should be encouraged to expand their experiences with purpose.

1a - children (late teens and adults) living at the family home should be expected to pay rent when not in studies. Rent should not go toward the parent's bills, but some form of asset store for the child. Responsibility and discipline are important, as is keeping them from stagnation. However, rent is taxation by another name and it directly damages the wealth of the next generation of a family.

 

Second - skills are wealth. Hard work is only part of the equation. Welding, reading of instructions and diagrams/schematics/prints, electronics and troubleshooting, CAD and CAM - all of these things are direct application to any job field whether it is self-employ or under a company. Parents must not only never stop learning or consider their own skill set complete - but must inspire their children to develop skills and trades.

 

Third - do not wait for another man or company to advance your career. Some will recognize hard work or untapped potential and seek to reward/develop it. Some will not. Consider everything you do in a job as entries onto a resume for another - or a higher position within the existing business. You are not going to complain your way to greater purchasing power.

 

Fourth - the cost of capability is an investment. The cost of a service is a consumable. $500 worth of tools can perform tens of thousands worth of services. Services are luxuries or for emergencies. Size according to your budget for luxuries.

 

Fifth - it starts with you.

Fair or not - you can't go back and teach your parents that so you can have gotten the benefits of such philosophies.

You have to start thinking about how to use the above to improve your condition and to prepare for a future generation that can have a better start than you did.

 

That will not change no matter what about the economic system changes. Even though I am a firm believer that things will get much better even for the mundane wage earner who does nothing but float - to truly take advantage of your life and improve things for our world - you have to think outside the "I want" and focus on "what will my children need?"

I agree with you. There are many ways to begin freeing yourself. I once saw a movie/video segment with an enormous fat man lying on a luxurious bed. The guy was so big he couldn't have done very much for himself, but it was clear in the video that he was very rich. He was ordering someone around I think. There will be a tussle between Americans who want simplicity, contentment and quality in their lives, and those who want the old "glitzy" way.

I have one "I wonder" about the whole Dominican Republic escapade. It is not in the interest of the DR tourist trade to fail to determine why Americans are getting sick and/or dying, unless they don't want Americans to travel there anymore ( a possibility). If Americans are the ONLY people affected (no natives or other tourist groups), could it be: 1. Someone is targeting Americans specifically 2. Americans have had some sort of exposure that renders them vulnerable to something in the environment in the DR. A vaccine, environmental chemical, etc. Synergistic toxicity is a thing.

 

I do have to wonder if a lot of events that wouldn't normally make the news are piling on. Self-help guru convicted in lurid sex-trafficking case

NEW YORK (AP) — The guru of a cult-like self-improvement group that attracted heiresses and Hollywood actresses was convicted Wednesday of turning his female devotees into his sex slaves through such means as shame, punishment and nude blackmail photos.

 

A jury in federal court in Brooklyn took less than five hours to find 58-year-old Keith Raniere guilty on all counts of sex-trafficking and coercing women into sex.

 

“Raniere was truly a modern-day Svengali,” Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue said outside court, calling him a lying manipulator who “ruined marriages, careers, fortunes and lives.”

 

Raniere, a short, bespectacled figure who wore pullover sweaters in court, listened attentively but showed no reaction as he learned the verdict. His lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, said Raniere plans to appeal. He could get 15 years to life in prison at sentencing Sept. 25.

 

“It’s a very sad day for him,” Agnifilo said. “I think he’s not surprised, but he maintains that he didn’t mean to do anything wrong.”

 

Raniere once had an international following with a foothold in Hollywood with his Albany-area group, NXIVM, pronounced NEHK-see-uhm. His adherents included actress Allison Mack of TV’s “Smallville”; an heiress to the Seagram’s liquor fortune, Clare Bronfman; and a daughter of TV star Catherine Oxenberg of “Dynasty” fame.

 

“This was a very frightening group,” Oxenberg said after the verdict. Her daughter India left NXIVM after her mother spoke out against it.

 

“I had to save a child who was caught in the grips of this cult, so I wasn’t going to stop until I succeeded,” Oxenberg said.

 

Prosecutors told jurors that Raniere — known to his followers as “Vanguard” and revered as “the smartest man in the world” — was actually a creepy con man who barely got passing grades in college.

 

A sorority made up of some NXIVM members, sometimes called “The Vow,” was created to satisfy his “desire for sex, power and control,” prosecutor Moira Penza said in closing arguments .

 

According to testimony, Raniere’s “slaves” were forced to give up “collateral” — nude photos and other material — to keep them in line.

 

Among the more damning allegations against Raniere were that he had some women branded with his initials and that he started having sex with a follower when she was 15. Prosecutors said he took nude photos of the teen that were shown, one by one, to the eight women and four men on the jury.

 

Raniere kept the photos stashed in his private study as “a trophy” of “his sexual conquest,” Penza said.

 

The defense argued that Raniere was a genuine believer in unconventional means for self-improvement and that all his sexual encounters with female followers were consensual. His behavior could be seen as “repulsive and offensive, but we don’t convict people in this country for being repulsive or offensive,” Agnifilo told the jury.

 

Raniere was arrested at a Mexican hideout in 2018 following an investigation into his group. Mack and Bronfman were indicted with him but pleaded guilty . Mack admitted helping Raniere assemble his harem and collect “collateral”; Bronfman confessed to committing financial crimes for him.

 

They didn’t testify, leaving a cooperating member of his inner circle and three victims from the secret sorority as the key witnesses.

 

One victim described being confined to a bedroom for more than 700 days on orders from Raniere as punishment for showing interest in another man. Another said she was blindfolded and bound to a table so that another woman could perform a sex act on her.

To burden 21st Century Americans of a certain melanin-count with the sins of a nation that over 150 years ago was effectively melted down and recast at such hallowed places as Shiloh, Antietam, Gettysburg, and finally Appomattox is prima facia absurd. To then seriously consider cash payments from today’s citizenry via the already red-ink saturated U.S. Treasury boggles the mind.

 

I will let ethicists discuss the fairness of extorting money from one generation to pay for the sins of five generations removed. Rather I propose to simply ask Sens. Warren and Booker, representative Lee, and others, how would such a reparations program work exactly? Who would fall under the category of payor and who under payee?

 

Would a white person today who can trace his/her lineage back until it ends at a grave marker of a Union soldier boy KIA at Chickamauga be exempt? How about the descendants of a Southern planter who not only rejected slavery and owned none, but, in fact, aided runaways at great peril to his home and family?

 

Would there be some on-line form to fill out that says “Check here if your great-great-great-great- grandparents were slave-owners” or will the a Reparations Commission find that whiteness is culpability enough because, well, okay, while you may have had three relatives atomized by rebel cannons while defending the Union “hornet’s nest” position at Shiloh, you’re still white and so you got the benefits of, well, just being white. So send your check here.

 

Now, what about my Italian wife? Her family never even set foot on American soil until sixty-seven years after Lee surrendered to Grant. What “privilege” did penniless Italian immigrants landing in New York in 1932 just as the Depression kicked into overdrive enjoy? And it wasn’t like Italians, dark people with a strange language and customs—and Catholic—were exactly welcomed with open arms by other whites. Should my wife pay anyway? Who should she cut the check to? Colin Powell’s or Tyler Perry’s kids? (For the memo how do you spell Sasha and Malia?)

 

Gets complicated doesn’t it? Well, let’s kick it up a notch. For almost all recorded history, among all peoples in both hemispheres, be they ancient Greeks, Mayans, or Chinese, slavery was an accepted norm. Movie-goers who hail the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae as defenders of freedom against a tyrant king may not know that Lacedaemon at its height fielded just 10,000 citizen-soldier hoplites; it was, in fact, a society built upon the backs of 150,000 brutalized Helot slaves. Athens, too, that cradle of democracy, was perfectly happy to enslave those it conquered.

 

And so it was in Africa as well. What has been taught in our ever more indoctrinating schools as an exclusively white slave trade was, in fact, aided and abetted throughout its 300 years of shame by African blacks who routinely enslaved other tribes and sold them off to the Europeans who stayed mainly confined to forts along the Atlantic shore. So how did all the inland slaves make it to these coastal outposts? The historians John Thornton and Linda Heywood of Boston University estimate that 90 percent of those shipped to the New World were enslaved by Africans and then sold to European traders.

 

Says Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates (yes he of Obama’s famous “Beer Summit”): “The sad truth is that without complex business partnerships between African elites and European traders and commercial agents, the slave trade to the New World would have been impossible, at least on the scale it occurred.” Maybe proponents plan to cast their reparations net far enough to reach across the ocean and ensnare some western African countries’ treasuries as well?

 

So slavery was hardly the sin of the Western white man alone. In fact, two white men, more than any others of any color, were most responsible for ending slavery in the West. British Commoner William Wilberforce led Great Britain in abolishing the slave trade in 1807, after which the Royal Navy effectively drove slavery off the high seas. (Britain abolished all slavery in 1833). And in 1863 Abraham Lincoln declared with the stroke of a pen that 3.5 million slaves in North America would be “henceforth and forever free” and then prosecuted a brutal war that saw over 700,000 Americans die to make it stick.

 

The United States today would be unrecognizable even to those who worked diligently to push through the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments. According to the 2010 US Census, there are over 550,000 inter-racial married couples in the USA. Ten percent of children born in the USA today are of mixed race, up from just one percent in 1970. Who pays who then? And what of their children? Do mixed-race people like Obama cut checks to… themselves?

Whenever one tries to distill a once-universal practice that was so multifaceted and historically overarching as slavery along a simplifying and patronizing color line, the center doesn’t hold. Slavery was the most complex issue in the history of the United States, and indeed the world. Its barbarity was matched only by its ubiquity…that was until the two most powerful White nations on earth ended much of it by force.

 

Perhaps it’s time leftist politicians stop condescending to African-Americans while cynically instilling in them a victim mentality solely for the harvesting of votes. This practice serves only to hobble Blacks with the greatest disadvantage in life one could have: a lack of belief in their own power to change their lives for the better and truly participate in the American dream. Reparations discussions deflect attention from the real issue facing Blacks today (and ever more whites too). 72% of Black children are born out of wedlock; 38% of Blacks are considered poor. And yet only 8% of Black families headed by married couples live below the poverty line. 30% of White families headed by one parent do. The greatest shield against poverty is emphasizing family values and smart choices. Perhaps, then, it’s today’s behavioral patterns rather than yesterday’s ancestral chains that are the real impediments to minority progress…that and the CEOs of Race Hustler, Inc. and their pandering Democratic hopefuls for whom true racial equality would merely serve to strip them of power. Maybe ending self-destructive societal norms, and not searching for restitution in the hold of the Amistad, is where true salvation lies.

In commodities, both Brent ($63.26) and WTI ($55.21) rally as Mideast tensions ratchet up, with gold jumping to the highest level in more than 5 years.

Interesting analysis.

 

I don't think it's plausible that a different faction would appear and take control of Iran. Despite the existence of the "supreme leader", Iran is a democracy, and it's got quite a sophisticated system of government that the Iranian public doesn't want to change.

 

The only big problem is the ayatollah and the role of Islam.

 

I think that the ayatollah genuinely cares about protecting Iranian interests and Iranian society. Iran's moves have been very calculated, threatening but not provocative. The regime has been cautious but has shown total resolve within boundaries (the US is lying about the drone being in international airspace - that's standard practice - US officials mumbled something about the drone being shot down outside of Iran's territory but appeared sheepish rather than outraged and vengeful).

 

I think the ayatollahs would be willing to remove the position of supreme leader if it was no longer necessary, as they see it. They would be willing to be a complete republic without a protector if no protection was necessary.

 

That means that the threat from Israel has to be removed. Israel has been itching to exterminate the Persians again and the US will do what Israel tells it to unless Trump can solve the Israel problem.

 

So if the goal is world peace, it will have to be a package deal. You can't expect Iran to sacrifice its military capabilities when there's still a military threat.
