Hoyer predicts House Democrats will gain seats next year

 

The second-highest ranking House Democrat predicted Tuesday that the party will gain seats at the polls next year, despite the controversy swirling around impeachment and the long list of vulnerable Democrats facing tough races.

 

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) declined to forecast a number but said Democrats are hoping to net six seats in Texas alone, where six Republicans are retiring at the end of this session.

 

"We're going to pick up seats next year," Hoyer said emphatically during a press briefing in the Capitol.

 

Hoyer also suggested that impeachment, rather than hurting vulnerable Democrats in the elections, would play to their advantage and accused Republicans of politicizing a serious issue.

 

"The greatest protection these members will have β€” all members will have β€” is that they vote their conviction and the Constitution. Not their politics," he said.

 

Hoyer's prediction came a day before Democrats are scheduled to vote on two articles of impeachment targeting President Trump for his handling of foreign policy in Ukraine. The first article charges the president with abuse of power, for pressing Ukrainian leaders to find dirt on his domestic political rivals; the second alleges he obstructed Congress as Democrats sought to investigate the affair.

 

Public surveys indicate the country is split roughly in half on the question of whether Trump should be removed from office. But Republicans remain overwhelmingly supportive of the president, and there are 31 Democrats representing districts carried by Trump in 2016.

 

Against that math, GOP operatives are licking their chops over the prospect of using impeachment as a cudgel to attack centrist Democrats in battleground districts next year.

 

Even so, those political considerations have so far done little to threaten the approval of the two impeachment articles in the House. Instead, those same vulnerable Democrats are emerging, one by one, to announce their support for both of them, all but ensuring easy passage when they hit the floor on Wednesday.

 

Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.), a Navy veteran, was one such lawmaker, saying Tuesday that Trump's dealings with Ukraine left her no choice.

 

"It became clear to me that he did, in fact, withhold critical military aid from a security partner in order to investigate β€” or attempt to have a foreign power investigate β€” an opponent of his in our democratic election process," she told reporters.

 

Still, Sherrill said voters in her district β€” which sided with Trump by less than a point in 2016 β€” have been supportive of her reflective approach to the divisive issue.

 

"We hear all kinds of opinions, from every different angle," she said. "But I think what I'm hearing most is I just want you to approach this with integrity, and I want you to be thoughtful about it."

 

Hoyer emphasized that Democratic leaders, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), are not putting any pressure on lawmakers ahead of Wednesday's votes.

 

"This is an issue that every member has to decide for himself or herself," he said. "I have not asked a single member, nor has Pelosi asked a single member, to vote for or against."

Top US General Reveals North Korea's Likely 'Christmas Gift' For Washington

 

At the start of this month North Korea declared it would send a "Christmas gift" to the United States but without specifying what the potentially menacing 'surprise' gift could be. The only qualification was that the 'gift' would be determined based on White House responsiveness and concessions before a Pyongyang self-imposed end of year deadline for talks.

 

But now a top US Air Force general says he knows what to expect: the β€œChristmas gift” to Washington will be a long-range ballistic missile test, he said according to The Hill.

 

β€œWhat I would expect is some type of long-range ballistic missile would be the gift. It’s just a matter of does it come on Christmas Eve, does it come on Christmas Day, does it come after the New Year,” Gen. Charles Brown, commander of Pacific Air Forces and air component commander for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said Tuesday.

 

He did additionally admit β€œrange” of possibilities, however, and held out hope that tensions would not escalate. β€œI think there’s also the possibility that the self-imposed moratorium [on long-range tests] may go away and nothing happens right away. [North Korean leader Kim Jong Un] announces it but then doesn’t shoot.”

 

Ri Thae Song, a first vice minister at the North Korean Foreign Ministry working on US affairs, declared two weeks ago that "The dialogue touted by the US is, in essence, nothing but a foolish trick hatched to keep the DPRK bound to dialogue and use it in favor of the political situation and election in the US."

 

He then warned: "It is entirely up to the US what Christmas gift it will select to get." This after N.Korea test-fired two short-range missiles on Thanksgiving Day, and then one just days ago, in a now familiar pattern of doing threatening things on American holidays.

 

Pyongyang is now also warning it will take β€œnew path” should denuclearization talks fail, which most analysts think will be a return to intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) or nuclear tests.

 

The north has launched dozens of "short-range" missiles since May, but has largely stuck to its word that it would refrain from ICBM tests, despite occasional disputes about whether the nature of some of the tests.

Cruz announced his campaign on 3/23/15. He dropped out on 5/14/16. He ran a pretty clean campaign.

His National Security advisor was Victoria Coates. She seems a patriot. She was later picked up by POTUS to work on Team Trump.

Campaign Manager, Jeff Roe. Seems okay. Chief Strategist, Jason Johnson, a very aggressive strategist. Been doing same work for other campaigns.I think Matthew Whitaker joined his group this year.

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., told "War Room: Impeachment" live on Newsmax TV on Tuesday that the House impeachment probe was "a set-up orchestrated to distract the country from the lies that the Democrats told us about Russia."

"An unconditional acquittal is still not as good as exoneration and vindication," Bannon said, because Democrats will try other tactics to remove Trump.

An eight-count indictment returned today charges Kuntjoro and PTMS, PTKEU, and PTAK, with conspiracy to unlawfully export U.S.-origin goods and technology to Iran and to defraud the United States. Kuntjoro and PTMS also face charges for unlawful export and attempted export to an embargoed country, conspiracy to launder monetary instruments, and false statements. As set forth in the indictment, the U.S.-origin goods were destined for an Iranian aviation business end user, Mahan Air, and the defendants conspired to make a financial profit for themselves and other conspirators, and to evade export regulations, prohibitions, and licensing requirements of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), the Iranian Transactions and Sanctions Regulations (ITSR), the Export Administration Regulations, and the Global Terrorism Sanctions Regulations (GTSR). The United States Department of Treasury designated Mahan Air as Specially Designated National and Blocked Person (SDN) under the GTSR on Oct. 12, 2011.

 

According to the indictment, between March 2011 and July 2018, Kuntjoro, the majority owner and President Director of PTMS, conspired with Mahan Air; Mustafa Oveici, an Iranian executive for Mahan Air; and others, including an American person and company. Mahan Air was designated an SDN for providing financial, material and technological support to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force. The United States Department of Commerce has placed Mahan on its Denied Parties List and Mustafa Oveici on the Entity List. The conspiracy involved transporting goods owned by Mahan through PTMS, PTKEU and PTAK to the United States for repair and re-export to Mahan in Iran and elsewhere. The conspirators caused the U.S.-origin goods to be exported from the United States without obtaining valid licenses from the United States Department of the Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control and the United States Department of Commerce.

 

On March 15, 1995, the President, pursuant to IEEPA, issued Executive Order No. 12957, finding that β€œthe actions and policies of the Government of Iran constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States” and declaring β€œa national emergency to deal with the threat.” In subsequent Executive Orders, the President imposed economic sanctions, including a trade embargo, on Iran. The Executive Orders and the ITSR prohibit the exportation, re-exportation, sale, or supply, directly or indirectly, to Iran of any goods, technology, or services from the United States or by a United States person without prior authorization or license from the United States Department of the Treasury, the Office of Foreign Assets Control, located in Washington, D.C.

 

Kuntjoro faces statutory maximum sentences of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the charge of conspiracy to violate IEEPA and defraud the U.S. government; a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine for each of the individual charges of violating IEEPA; a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine on the charge of conspiracy to launder monetary instruments; and a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the false statement charge. The maximum potential sentence in this case is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes only, as any sentencing of the defendant will be determined by a judge.

 

The investigation was conducted by special agents from the United States Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security, Office of Export Enforcement, with assistance from special agents from Homeland Security Investigations in San Diego and Miami.

The ruling and new state law raise the bar for companies that otherwise might rely on freelance or contract work. California’s bill is arguably the strongest of its kind in the nation, giving the state and cities the right to file suit against companies over misclassification, overriding the arbitration agreements that many businesses use to shield themselves from worker complaints. The new law’s supporters point to audits conducted by state employment officials that found almost 500,000 workers were wrongly treated as independent contractors. Much of the early legislative debate on the bill centered on low-wage sectors of the California economy.
