Trump Nixed Calls For Large-Scale Attack On Iranian Proxies, Citing Covid-19

 

In what appears the first significant US foreign policy alteration due to the coronavirus pandemic, President Trump reportedly nixed plans for a large-scale attack on "Iranian proxies" in Iraq last week amid a tit-for-tat following rocket attacks on a US base there, which killed two Americans.

 

The Commander-in-Chief specifically cited coronavirus as reason for holding off on such a major attack, which would surely bog American forces down further in an ongoing battle against Iran inside neighboring Iraq, which Washington fears has long come under the control of the Shia clerics in Tehran. More importantly, the president thought it would "look bad" at the moment of a global pandemic.

 

NBC reports: "President Donald Trump told his top national security advisers last week that because of the coronavirus pandemic he didn't think an aggressive response to new attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq by Iranian-backed militias was the right move, according to one former and four current senior U.S. officials."

 

He was reportedly being pressed by Iran hawks in the cabinet, of which there are plenty, for a much more muscular attack. Instead US airstrikes on Kataeb Hezbollah locations across southern Iraq on March 12 were limited to to just five militia weapons depots.

Following a media narrative that President Trump is “racist” for calling COVID-19 the ‘Chinese virus’, the New York Times has now deleted the word ‘Wuhan’ from its coronavirus tracking map.

Lockdowns, curfews. Troops on the streets. Governments handing out free cash. This utter madness was entirely avoidable

 

What happens when governments confuse worst-case scenarios with reality? They transform a health crisis into a social crisis and an economic tsunami, with consequences more severe than the virus could produce in the first place.

 

As I write, hundreds of thousands of people across Europe and the world have already lost their jobs, in the leisure and entertainment sectors in particular. As sector after sector is impacted by global lockdowns, mass unemployment is not a possibility, it is definite. And the social costs are going to be severe. How severe no one really knows. But past experiences show that when people lose jobs, they can also lose homes, their marriages, their health – and our social fabric is pulled apart.

 

However, we should be careful not to obsess with trying to second-guess what the huge costs to society will be of the panic. Otherwise there is a danger of one form of apocalyptic scaremongering being replaced by another.

 

There are two related problems. The first is that the global economy was already in the emergency ward before the impact of Covid-19. Whether the economic actions being taken across the world – from unprecedented interest-rate cuts through to eye-watering trillions of dollar state spending – will stem the flow or not remains to be seen. Perversely, it could help to shake out many non- or under-performing sections of the economy, which could be a good thing in the long-term.

 

The second problem, and the more important one in the short-term, is that economic rationale is not what is driving policy; apocalyptic doom-mongering is. Provoked by the media, governments have been forced into a macabre competition of being seen to be acting. The ‘do something… anything’ approach has resulted in new performative displays aimed at placating the doom mongers, rather than address the health problem rationally. Many governments have been driven less by a reasoned, evidence-based strategy of limiting both the spread of the disease and the disorganisation of economic life, than by an urge to be seen to be taking action.

 

This is the real problem. In Europe, we have seen an historically unprecedented peace time clampdown on everyday life and social engagement, particularly in Italy, Spain and France. It seems that the responsibility of behaving as true moral leaders who might galvanise the public in a collective mission against illness and a concerted effort to protect economic life, has been jettisoned in favour of being seen to act.

New Hampshire lawsuit challenges state's coronavirus ban on big gatherings on First Amendment grounds

The ongoing outbreak of the Wuhan coronavirus — formally known as COVID-19 — has prompted state and local officials around the country to bar people from getting together in large groups and even leaving their homes in some cases. A recent lawsuit in New Hampshire, however, is challenging one of those orders on constitutional grounds.

 

According to a story published Thursday in the New Hampshire Union Leader, the plaintiffs in the case say that their First Amendment rights to peaceable assembly have been violated by Republican Gov. Chris Sununu's recent order banning gatherings of over 50 people:

 

"To be clear, of course we do not wish the spread of COVID-19," said Dan Hynes of Manchester, the lawyer representing the three people who brought the suit.

 

"However, the government should not be acting in an unconstitutional manner in order to possibly address their concerns."

 

In the court filing, Hynes said Sununu has every legal right to advise citizens not to gather in large crowds, but he said that mandating this behavior runs afoul of constitutional protections.

 

Sununu announced the statewide prohibition of "scheduled public gatherings over 50 people" on Monday along with a mandatory restriction on dine-in services at the state's restaurants and bars. The restrictions are in place until April 7.

 

"This action will help slow the spread of this virus in New Hampshire," Sununu said in a written statement. "We do not take this decision lightly. This will be hard, but we are all in this together."

 

"We can choose to assemble if that is our desire. What cannot occur is one man in a position of power deciding to strip us of our rights in the name of safety and without due process," one plaintiff said in the news release, according to the Associated Press.

 

In response to the lawsuit, a spokesman for Gov. Sununu told the Associated Press that the order was both within the governor's authority as well as in line other actions taken around the country, and said, "We are confident the court will agree."

 

On Thursday, New Hampshire health officials said the Granite State had 44 confirmed cases of the new disease up from 39 the day before, according to WHDH-TV.

 

New Hampshire isn't the only state to ban temporarily large public gatherings in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. The governors of New York, California, Ohio, Washington state, and Oregon took similar steps last week, according to the Washington Examiner.

 

This week, the governor of Wisconsin announced a public gatherings of 10 or more people, according Wisconsin Public Radio, while WCSH-TV reported that Maine's governor announced a ban on events of the same size.

 

On Monday, the White House issued guidance that people avoid getting together in groups of more than 10 people for two weeks in order to help slow the spread of the virus.

Still waiting for any media outlet to question state health departments on what specific steps they took in December, January and February to plan for a potential virus epidemic and mitigate the influenza flu season impact.

 

Most information found on state websites indicate disseminating flu season alerts and general hygiene. CDC resources were linked/posted Covid-19 once available.

 

But did state health departments actually prepare during the first 3 months?

 

Was additional/refresher training provided or recommended for healthcare providers?

Were medical supply inventories checked and orders placed? (mask and ventilator manufactures have stated no)

Were containment and isolation plans prepared and reviewed?

Were mandatory reporting forms prepared?(WA DOH did not have a Covid-19 form till March)

Were additional public awareness campaigns for flu season and common sense conducted? (evidently not as influenza peaked at over 10000/week in early February)

Did states question Congress on why CDC funding for immunization and public health response was reduced $660 million after a 3 month delay?

How soon did state health departments begin requesting additional funding to cover expenses of the above items?

Why did so many of these items wait until March for action?

What documentation do the states have to show they addressed items as many things may not get posted on a webpage or news brief?

 

In addition to state health departments, many of the questions could apply to hospitals - the administrators running the operation, not the doctors and nurses performing the day to day care of patients.

Paris police restrict movements and GATHERINGS in city center ahead of weekend

 

Police in Paris have tightened restrictions in the French capital, banning movement and gatherings at prominent locations in the city center ahead of the weekend.

Walmart to Hire 150K Workers, Offer $550 Million in Bonuses During Coronavirus Outbreak

 

Walmart will hire 150,000 workers to meet rising demand during the Chinese coronavirus pandemic, the company said Thursday.

 

“As part of responding to the current environment, Walmart is also hiring 150,000 new associates through the end of May to work in stores, clubs, distribution centers and fulfillment centers,” the press release read.

 

At first, the positions will be temporary but many employees will transition to permanent roles later on. Walmart will also cut the application and hiring process down for cashiers and stockers from two weeks to 24-hours.

 

In addition, the company plans to give its employees cash bonuses as a thank you for their hard work during the health crisis.

 

“The bonus will be $300 for full-time hourly associates and $150 for part-time hourly associates and will add up to more than $365 million. Every hourly associate employed by the company as of March 1 will qualify, and it will pay out on April 2,” the release said.

 

On Thursday Walmart stated it would also accelerate its employees’ next scheduled quarterly bonuses to get the cash to them sooner:

 

“Overall, it amounts to nearly $550 million going into associates’ pockets and the economy at this important time. Hourly Q4 bonuses were paid this week, meaning hourly associates will receive bonus payments on March 19, April 2, April 30 and May 28,” the release continued.

 

In a note to workers on Thursday, President and CEO of Walmart U.S. John Furner praised them for their dedication during the health crisis.

Combine that with the outbreak in Washington state at that Life Care Center of Kirkland, so I did a little digging. Coronavirus: Dozens of Nuns in Rome Convents Infected

 

ROME (AP) — Outbreaks of the coronavirus have stricken two convents in the Rome area.

 

Rome daily Il Messaggero quoted the Lazio region´s health commissioner on Friday as saying 59 nuns at the Institute of Daughters of St. Camillo, in the hill town of Grottaferrata, have tested positive for COVID-19. One of the nuns has been hospitalized.

 

The newspaper also said 19 of 21 nuns at the convent of the Congregation of Angelic Sisters, on the outskirts of Rome, have the coronavirus infection.

 

Churches in Italy are no longer holding public Masses, but some of them are still open for faithful to come in to pray.

 

Because of nearby Vatican City, Rome is home to dozens of convents or mother houses of congregations of many nuns.

Heads Up Internet: A Dangerous Zombie CFAA Expansion Bill is Back

 

A group of senators in Washington is trying—for the fourth time—to pass dangerous and misguided language that would amend and expand the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), our nation’s notoriously vague anti-hacking law. The language was first floated in 2015, then again in 2016, and again in 2018. Back in 2018, the language made up a standalone bill, the International Cybercrime Prevention Act, and the Senators have dropped that entire bill into Title IV of the Defending American Security from Kremlin Aggression Act.

 

Title IV is ostensibly motivated by the threat posed by botnets, but its provisions would have implications far beyond that limited context. What it actually does is unnecessarily expand the CFAA without fixing any of the law’s existing problems. The CFAA already threatens beneficial security research, and Title IV, which increases penalties, will only make that threat worse. It also creates broad new authority for the government to obtain court orders to stop violations of the CFAA, or to order third parties to do so on its behalf. This could result in severe collateral damage, yet Title IV fails to provide any protections or give users any recourse if their systems are harmed.

 

Senators Whitehouse, Graham, and Blumenthal have included this language as one small section in a hundred-page bill that would do a variety of other things unrelated to botnets, like create a federal department to serve as the lead policy body on issues related to international cybersecurity and Internet freedom, and amend the criminal code to target election interference. This was a bad idea when it was first introduced in 2015, and it’s still a bad idea today—no matter what packaging the senators try to put it into.

 

Back in 2015, when we opposed the original incarnation of this language, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse accused EFF and other civil liberties organizations as being part of a “hidden pro-botnet, pro-foreign cyber criminal caucus.” That was a ridiculous claim. We are simply well aware of how the CFAA has been abused. The CFAA is already the “worst law in technology,” and this bill would only make it worse, by making it more vague and more draconian. Fighting malicious cybercrime is a noble goal, but we should do so via well-crafted and narrowly-targeted legislation—not via a bill that will threaten beneficial cybersecurity research.

Unnecessary Expansion of the CFAA Without Fixing Any of the Law’s Existing Problems

 

This language would expand the existing prohibition in the CFAA against selling passwords to selling any “means of access.” Such an expansion is unnecessary and misguided. The government has claimed that this change is necessary to enable prosecution of those selling or renting botnets to malicious actors, but any such behavior would constitute conspiracy to commit a violation of the CFAA. And the CFAA’s prohibitions on unauthorized access already criminalize the creation and use of malicious botnets.

2 people in my household have had mild symptoms for the last 10 days or so. one is a child, the other recently traveled. today i woke up with similar mild symptoms. we havent been tested yet but no need to expend healthcare resources on us just yet. i have an underlying medical condition so i will really be monitoring my symptoms, and going to the hospital only if they worsen. most cases in my demographic only experience mild symptoms then get better, so i think alot of cases could be out there right now, they just havent been confirmed with tests. i also know other people that have been sick recently without getting a test done.

Turkey has sent 500,000 coronavirus test kits to the United States upon their request, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said yesterday.

According to the ministry, the number of the laboratories used to examine test resylts will also increase from 25 to 36. He added that all metropolises in Turkey will soon be able to conduct COVID-19 tests.

 

Turkey aims to bring into force a quick-diagnosis test, which will be distributed to all provinces. The kits are expected to arrive today, the country’s minister said.

 

Iran and Italy were responsible for the virus’ spread around the world and Europe, he added.

Saudi Arabia and UAE accused of exploiting aid to prolong war in Yemen

 

The Sana’a Centre for Strategic Studies has alleged that Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are using international relief agencies as tools to prolong the war in Yemen. It made the allegation in its monthly report issued on Thursday.

 

The Centre accused Saudi Arabia and the UAE of exploiting their position as the largest contributors to the humanitarian relief efforts in Yemen by claiming that they are saving Yemeni lives, while simultaneously taking lives and destroying the country’s economy and infrastructure. According to the report, the provision of relief to the Yemenis has allowed Saudi Arabia and the UAE a route in so that they can continue to feed the conflict in search of their desired goals.

 

Furthermore, the report also explained that the Houthi group has corralled UN agencies and international organisations tightly and turned relief efforts amounting to around $4 billion in 2019 into a major source of income for the movement. It pointed out that international agencies and organisations have put aid principles to one side in order to secure access to the needy.

 

“In doing so, however, these humanitarian actors have reluctantly been providing hefty subsidies for Houthi operations,” the report said, “which include weaponising starvation, recruiting child soldiers, planting millions of landmines in civilian areas, sexual violence and mass campaigns of arrest and torture.”

 

The report quoted humanitarian workers as saying that, as soon as aid reaches Houthi-controlled areas, the group dictates its terms on how to store and transport it, where and when this will happen, and to whom it is distributed.

 

“Houthi forces have used their control over access to aid, or the threat of its denial, as a means to recruit soldiers from hungry communities in Yemen, to reward support or punish dissent in northern areas, and for cash income through selling the aid supplies on the market,” the Centre added.

The aim of this study is to contribute to the architectural criticism through the relationship between the text and rhetoric. In this context, the study pursues the messages rhetoric –as an effective means of persuasion– instills in the subconscious, at the textual level, and is based on providing the reader with guidance and means for interpretation in a certain vein of thought. In architecture, the message can be conveyed not only through buildings, but also through texts. The mechanism is analogous with those of advertisements, TV series, or posters seeking ways to probe into and affect our perception systems. The architecture's attempt at persuasion, on the other hand, can be read through discourse/textual products, as well as in the form of buildings. The persuasion, which introduce various archetypes to the vicinity of our consciousness, has a virtual reference to memory as something akin to the 25th frame of a film strip, through the visual and linguistic/textual messages extended either directly or in between the lines. In this context, the 25th frame effect, which provides substantial capabilities of persuasion, can become an object of architectural criticism, as one of the most effective methods of influencing the subconscious. In a nutshell, the relationship between the text and the rhetoric involves critical cases and meanings, which present the potential of becoming the 25th frame effect of architecture. Therefore the study discusses the messages installed/positioned on the subconscious of the reader in the textual world of architecture, through the critical approach it adopts.

Fed’s Balance Sheet Skyrockets to $4.7 Trillion

 

The Fed’s H.4.1 report was released at 4:30 p.m. today and it shows that the Federal Reserve’s balance sheet has skyrocketed to $4.7 trillion. It also shows that as of yesterday, its repo loans to the trading houses on Wall Street had soared to a total of $441.9 billion outstanding while borrowings from its Discount Window added another $28.2 billion, bringing the combined total to over $470 billion in loans outstanding.

 

Wall Street has been receiving hundreds of billions of dollars a week in assistance from the Fed since September 17, 2019 while struggling Americans have yet to see a dime of assistance to help offset job losses from the coronavirus outbreak. The Fed doesn’t have to wait for a vote in Congress to funnel $9 trillion in cumulative loans to Wall Street. It can create an unlimited amount of dollars electronically at the push of a button. Following the 2007-2010 financial crisis and three rounds of Quantitative Easing (QE), the Fed’s balance sheet never exceeded $4.5 trillion. The 2007-2010 financial crisis was the worst Wall Street calamity since the 1930s and the Great Depression. In both periods, the depths of the crash resulted from federal regulators allowing depository banks to be under the same management as high-risk Wall Street trading houses and investment banks. The Congress in place in 1933 clearly recognized the problem and passed the Banking Act of 1933 (Glass-Steagall Act). That legislation created federal insurance on bank deposits and banned Wall Street firms engaged in trading or underwriting securities to own federally-insured banks.

 

The U.S. financial system thrived for 66 years under the Glass-Steagall Act. But the Bill Clinton administration, which was filled with Wall Street cronies, repealed the legislation in 1999. It took just nine years after the repeal for Wall Street to blow itself up in the precise fashion of 1929.

 

Rather than having the courage to stand up to Wall Street’s titans and lobbyists and restore the Glass-Steagall Act, the Obama administration passed hodgepodge legislation called the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, which seemed to be intentionally filled with loopholes for Wall Street’s mega banks to wiggle through easily.

 

As a result, after receiving a $29 trillion Fed bailout from 2007 to 2010 and hundreds of billions more in taxpayer assistance, Wall Street is back again at the money trough as the country faces a national crisis that demands attention to hardworking Americans, who, through no fault of their own, have lost their jobs, their livelihoods and their health insurance that came with that job.

Earlier this week, Boeing said it wanted $60 billion in government funds due to the damage caused by the coronavirus epidemic. As global travel demand has plunged for its airline customers, Boeing, already reeling from the grounding of its 737 MAX following two deadly crashes, is seeing new orders postponed.

 

Boeing has reportedly incurred almost $19 billion in costs related to the 737 MAX aircraft. The company is also waiting for regulatory approval for that plane model to fly again.

 

Boeing is seeking the federal aid for itself and its many suppliers, including United Technologies (UTX), General Electric (GE), Spirit Aerosystems Holdings (SPR) and others.

 

President Donald Trump has vowed to save the company, saying: “We have to protect Boeing.”

 

But Haley, a former governor of South Carolina and widely touted as a future Republican presidential candidate, expressed her disapproval of a possible federal bailout.

 

Boeing's leaders "are going in a direction I cannot support," Haley wrote in a resignation letter. “While I know cash is tight, that is equally true for numerous other industries and for millions of small businesses, I cannot support a move to lean on the federal government for a stimulus or bailout that prioritizes our company over others and relies on taxpayers to guarantee our financial position. I have long held strong convictions that this is not the role of government.”

 

Haley added that she will remain a "strong supporter of Boeing and its workforce" and expressed confidence in the future viability of the grounded 737 MAX plane.

 

While governor of South Carolina, Haley fought off efforts by Boeing’s largest union to establish a bargaining unit at their factory in North Charleston, where it manufactured 787 Dreamliner planes.

The irony of the situation is that Russia’s stability (in comparison with other states) has become a result of the actions of the so-called collective West. Just 10 years ago, it was importing grain, a large part of food products. It lacked some key technologies in the production of medical supplies. For Russian companies, it was just cheaper and easier to act this way than develop own capabilities in the field. However, the increasing sanction pressure forced the Russians to invest into own national industry and economy thus preparing the state to the upcoming crisis.

hydroxychloroquine is readily available here and cheap. i've prescribed it often. has been available since the 1950s. used as treatment AND prevention of malaria when traveling, but was also used routinely with autoimmune disorders (rheum arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus, psoriasis, etc) prior to the advent of BIOLOGICs (ie, Humira)
