Seeking an eviction moratorium in coronavirus pandemic, protesters target Garcetti’s house

Housing activists held a drive-by protest at Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s residence Wednesday morning, honking their horns and shouting from their windows to urge him to pass a blanket moratorium on residential evictions during the coronavirus pandemic.

 

A parade of about 20 vehicles circled Getty House in Windsor Square for more than a half hour, snaking around the block until Los Angeles Police Department officers arrived and parked two large vehicles in a nearby intersection.

 

LAPD spokesman Josh Rubenstein said traffic could still flow in the area. “According to a supervisor on the scene, the patrol vehicles partially blocked the intersection to control the flow of traffic, ensuring safe travels on the street,” Rubenstein said. “Cars were not blocked.”

 

After police parked in the intersection, a crowd of more than 40 housing activists then took to the sidewalks in front of Getty House. “It’s not a real moratorium,” protesters yelled. “No wages, no rent,” others shouted, while some held signs that read, “Freeze all rents.”

 

Albert Corado, 31, who came from Atwater Village to join the protest, said he was frustrated by the city’s new eviction policy, arguing that what the mayor and L.A. City Council have done doesn’t go far enough.

 

“What the city has done is really ineffectual,” Corado said.

 

It’s unclear if Garcetti was home during the 7 a.m. protest. His spokesman, Alex Comisar, said that the mayor and L.A. City Council have “taken quick, aggressive action” to freeze rents and prevent evictions during the crisis.

 

“The mayor stands with all Angelenos and he will continue taking every possible step to support them through this emergency,” Comisar said.

 

The City Council last week approved a temporary ban on evictions for renters who are unable to pay rent because of the coronavirus. The council also waived late fees and gave renters up to a year to pay back rent after the city’s emergency order for the pandemic expires.

 

Council members, however, rejected a blanket ban on all evictions. Instead, to qualify, renters who are unable to pay rent must demonstrate how they have been harmed by the coronavirus, which critics say is too onerous a task given that many may be unable to get tested for the coronavirus or see a doctor.

 

Renters may also have a hard time proving that their work hours were cut, for example, because of the economic upheaval caused by the pandemic.

 

Garcetti went further this week, announcing that landlords would not be allowed to increase the rent for tenants who live in apartments that fall under the city’s rent stabilization program. The announcement covers about 624,000 apartments and it’s unclear how many of those units would have been subject to annual rent increases during the pandemic.

 

Organizers said that Wednesday’s protest was expected to attract members of L.A. Tenants Union, Chinatown Community for Equitable Development, NOlympics LA and other groups. The protesters said they want a moratorium on all evictions during the crisis, complete rent forgiveness and/or rent suspension, and the immediate use of hotel and motel rooms to provide permanent housing to unhoused residents.

 

Protesters held a similar rally outside Garcetti’s residence Sunday.

 

Separately, tenant activist groups held “rent strike” protests in several cities Wednesday, vowing to skip payments because of the economic downturn from the coronavirus pandemic.

George Pell High Court judgment on appeal against child sex abuse convictions to be handed down next week

 

The High Court of Australia has announced it will hand down its decision on Cardinal George Pell's final bid for freedom in Brisbane next week.

 

The nation's highest court will deliver its decision at 10:00am on Tuesday, April 7.

 

Pell is serving a maximum of six years' jail after a jury found him guilty of sexually abusing two choirboys in St Patrick's Cathedral in 1996 when he was Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne.

 

He was convicted of one count of sexual penetration of a child under 16 and four counts of committing an indecent act with a child.

 

The former advisor to the Pope maintains he is innocent.

 

In August last year, in a 2-1 judgment, Victoria's Court of Appeal rejected Pell's bid to have his convictions overturned.

 

The High Court is Pell's final avenue for appeal.

 

The full bench of the court reserved its decision after two days of legal argument about his case last month.

 

Pell's lawyers had argued the jury made a mistake and his convictions should be quashed.

 

Pell's counsel, Bret Walker SC, told the High Court there was a "sheer unlikelihood" that his client could have committed the abuse in the midst of a "hive of activity" after a Solemn Mass at St Patrick's Cathedral.

 

Victoria's Director of Public Prosecutions Kerri Judd QC told the judges the evidence presented was enough for the original jury to convict Cardinal Pell beyond reasonable doubt.

 

Pell, 78, is being held in Barwon Prison near Geelong.

 

If the High Court allows his appeal, Pell will be cleared of his conviction and freed immediately from prison.

 

The court could also choose to send the case back to the Victorian Court of Appeal or dismiss the appeal.

 

In February 2019, the Holy See announced its own internal inquiry into Pell, to be run by the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, a body with the power to investigate its own.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Thompson was hospitalized on March 19. The senator tested positive for COVID-19 early last week.

 

He made the announcement on Facebook on March 22, saying that he came down with "flu like symptoms" about a week and half before authoring the post.

 

"While I am feeling much better, I plan to remain at home in self-quarantine for the immediate future," Thompson wrote.

 

Thompson is a Republican representing Georgia District 14 in the State Senate.

One other very inderdasting factoid about that harbor is that there have been NO cases of Covid-19 among them. My source for that info is from listening to Los Angeles Fire Department Alternate Communications System radio by way of scanner. Under the current state of National Emergency, they conduct daily on air briefings among themselves, with members verbally "signing in" across Los Angeles county. On day one of their briefings, a member inside the port reported all systems were fully operational. No disruptions or delays because of the virus scare. Today they talked about how unusual it was that no port workers have contracted Covid-19. Their saying something is "unusual" is as conspiratorial as they get on air. It is VERY unusual that no harbor workers have become sick with Covid-19.

Whoever did this to us did it deliberately. Whether they created the virus or pounced on it as a timely opportunity we may never know. This virus will pass. Hopefully before our stocks of essentials reserves are used up. The locks on the new chains around our necks may not open that easily. The keys to many are already being thrown away. We are being herded across the last mile into a brazenly neofeudal social order. An order their lordships will defend to the last drop of their serfs’ blood. As they always have.

 

The only way this can end is a collapse of the entire financial house of cards. And with it the attempt to hijack whole populations into economic slavery, social dehumanization and political impotency. To enforce upon them the voicelessness of hopelessness. The common people will be hurt along with the crooks. But they have less to lose because they have so little already. The elite do not fear mere ruination. They are terrified of retribution. The world has gone without a revolution for 75 years since World War II ended. We have not been kept wanting for sensational political power struggles, economic upheavals, regime changes and lesser wars. None of it amounts to an uprooting of the social order in any country. On or around 10/28/17, it was made official that Hillary Clinton's arrest date, to begin the processes related to trials for her crimes against humanity, would occur 10/30/2020. Texas Governor Deems Religious Services Essential

This footage shows Chinese factory workers sitting around after demand from Europe and the United States dried up amid the coronavirus pandemic.

 

A second video eerily shows the empty factory floor after the company went out of business just a few days later.

 

Scenes such as the ones filmed inside Hangzhou Lorom Electric and Cable Co Ltd, in East China’s Zhejiang Province, are said to be playing out “across the country” despite Beijing’s attempts to restart the economy last month.

 

Footage shared by Lorom staff shows them sitting idly by assembly lines that are no longer pushing out products for the original equipment manufacturing sector, which came to a standstill in January and February as all production was suspended due to the outbreak.

 

Their work, which usually involves bulk orders of products such as computer cables or phone chargers, has not returned despite the Chinese government’s announcement of a gradual restart of industries last month.

 

This is reportedly a result of the coronavirus outbreak badly affecting Europe and the United States, halting demand from China – the ‘factory of the world’ – and forcing supply chain businesses such as Lorom, which employed 10,000 people – to shut its doors after 24 years.

 

Images from the factory floor showed employees living off instant noodles before they were laid off en masse.

 

According to a social media post by former Lorom employee Yu Dunlan, she and her colleagues were recalled to the assembly line on 6th March.

 

However, they sat around “for days” waiting for work before they were all dismissed on 21st March and signed for severance pay two days after that.

 

Employees said they were told Hangzhou Lorom is to be relocated, but it was unclear if and when the new factory would open.

FDA Pulls All Forms of Popular Heartburn Drug Zantac from the Market, Warns of ‘Impurities’

 

The Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday it is requesting that all manufacturers and sellers of a popular heartburn medication remove the drug from store shelves and halt production over potentially dangerous “impurities.”

 

According to an agency news release, ranitidine medication, often referred to by the common brand name Zantac, was recently discovered to contain “unacceptable levels” of a “probable human carcinogen” known as N-Nitrosodimethylamine or NDMA.

 

Concerned by the potentially cancerous contaminant’s presence in several over-the-counter and prescription samples of ranitidine, the FDA officially called for a total and immediate withdrawal of the drug from U.S. markets.

 

“The FDA is committed to ensuring that the medicines Americans take are safe and effective,” Center for Drug Evaluation and Research Director Dr. Janet Woodcock said.

 

“We didn’t observe unacceptable levels of NDMA in many of the samples that we tested,” Woodcock added. “However, since we don’t know how or for how long the product might have been stored, we decided that it should not be available to consumers and patients unless its quality can be assured.”

The Wednesday announcement came after months of governmental and independent testing of the product.

 

According to the agency, initial concerns had been raised regarding potentially unhealthy levels of NDMA in ranitidine when unnamed third-party laboratories made the discovery, prompting months of further FDA investigation.

 

An FDA advisory regarding the potential dangers of the drug was released in November as the agency awaited further developments.

 

Testing results released upon closure of the investigation reportedly revealed unhealthy levels of the impurity are not present in all, or even most, samples of the drug.

 

Impurity levels were shown to increase with time, however, particularly when shelved samples of the drug were stored in high temperatures which may be associated with both the drug’s “distribution and handling by consumers.”

Zantac and similar ranitidine antacid generics are prescribed 15 million times a year and have been for nearly a decade, USA Today reported in November.

 

The drug has been on the market since its approval in 1984, with expert pharmaceutical and health concerns failing to crop up until 2016.

 

Those taking the drug in its over-the-counter form were warned against continued use Wednesday and told to dispose of their remaining dosages. Individuals with a prescription were advised to speak to their doctors before halting usage.

 

“There are multiple drugs approved for the same or similar uses as ranitidine that do not carry the same risks from NDMA,” the FDA news release read, listing potential replacements like Pepcid, Tagamet, Nexium, Prevacid and Prilosec.

 

To date, agency testing has not revealed unhealthy levels of NDMA in any of the those alternatives.

On Monday, after holding a virtue-signaling press conference lecturing the public on the Bible, Chronister arrested Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne for holding services on Sunday, even though his lawyer says he was following CDC guidelines for sanitation and social distancing.

 

“His reckless disregard for human life put hundreds of people in his congregation at risk and thousands of residents who may interact with them this week in danger,” the sheriff said.

 

The sheriff really cares about human life and public safety, right?

 

Well, now channel 10 news in Tampa is reporting that Chronister has released 163 prisoners as a “precautionary” measure to avoid spreading the virus in jail, as if somehow taking them out of the ultimate quarantine into the general population will stop the spread, and as if criminals will actually abide by the home confinement Chronister so zealously wants to impose on all citizens.

 

Chronister repeated the same disingenuous line that these criminals are all low-level. “These defendants are the lowest public safety risk,” Chronister said. “They were merely sitting in jail because they could not afford to pay the amount it would take to bond out.”

 

The problem is that most people who wind up in jail these days, especially with the trend of leniencies up and down the system, usually are serious criminals or repeat offenders. Non-serious criminals simply don’t serve time any more. These releases don’t take into account prior history and plea bargains, which are ubiquitous throughout the system. Judges will often keep people locked up for “low-level” crimes, if they have priors and have been arrested for more serious charges that were pled down.

 

Channel 10 lists the criminal charges among those released by the sheriff, and the bulk of them were locked up for theft, burglary, and drugs. Yes, some of them could be relatively low-level, but what we’ve seen nationwide is that it is usually high-level criminals who are rearrested and jailed on these sorts of crimes. Any cop looking at these crimes will tell you that these are not people who just simply couldn’t pay their bail and will stay out of trouble if released.

 

Last week, a woman in Utah was violently attacked by a man who broke into her home after he was released under coronavirus jailbreak because he was “only” serving time for drug charges.

Two of them are immigrants who should be deported, but Newsom does not cooperate with ICE to ensure safe transfer, even of other countries’ murderers.

 

These jailbreaks are now occurring in every major city in both blue and red states. Despite Governor Greg Abbott’s efforts to block jailbreak, Harris County, Texas, still plans to release 1,000 inmates. But fear not, Houstonians, Mayor Sylvester Turner has begged criminals not to commit crime, so you will be safe. “Until the coronavirus is resolved, criminals take a break. Okay. Stay home. Stay home and don’t commit any crimes,” implored the Houston mayor on Monday. “Wait till the coronavirus is over and then we’ll all be okay.”

 

Thus, as pastors and business owners get arrested, just remember that if you are caught violating your home arrest, you can just tell the cops you are on your way to committing a “low-level” crime and you will be let off the hook. Vermont's Agency of Commerce and Community Development has ordered all "big box" retailers in the state such as Walmart, Target, and Costco to stop the in-store selling of items the agency has determined to be "non-essential" as part of its effort to stop the spread of COVID-19.

 

What are the details?

 

The state's directive requires that "large 'big box' retailers must":

 

Restrict access to non-essential goods. Stores must close aisles, close portions of the store, or remove items from the floor.

Only offer non-essential items via online portals, telephone, delivery, or curbside pickup, to the extent possible.

Except in the event of emergencies threatening the health and welfare of a customer, showrooms and garden sections of large home improvement centers should be closed.

 

WCVB-TV reported that "according to the state, large retailers must cease in-person sales of items that include, but are not limited to: Arts and crafts, beauty supplies, carpet and flooring, clothing, consumer electronics, entertainment (books, music, movies), furniture, home and garden, jewelry, paint, photo services, sports equipment," and toys.

 

A spokesperson from the Agency of Commerce and Community Development told WCAX-TV that the restrictions are not new, and were part of Gov. Phil Scott's (R) original "Stay Home, Stay Safe" executive order signed on March 24, which ordered all non-essential businesses to close. However, the press release about big box stores was sent out on March 31.

 

A post on a public Facebook group for citizens in communities in and around Bennington County urged people not to "panic" over the new order, and posted photos from a local Walmart showing aisles and entire departments taped off with a notice to customers reading: "By order of the state of Vermont, items in this 'non-essential' area are not available for purchase."

Vermont's Agency of Commerce and Community Development has ordered all "big box" retailers in the state such as Walmart, Target, and Costco to stop the in-store selling of items the agency has determined to be "non-essential" as part of its effort to stop the spread of COVID-19.

 

What are the details?

 

The state's directive requires that "large 'big box' retailers must":

 

Restrict access to non-essential goods. Stores must close aisles, close portions of the store, or remove items from the floor.

 

Only offer non-essential items via online portals, telephone, delivery, or curbside pickup, to the extent possible.

 

Except in the event of emergencies threatening the health and welfare of a customer, showrooms and garden sections of large home improvement centers should be closed.

 

WCVB-TV reported that "according to the state, large retailers must cease in-person sales of items that include, but are not limited to: Arts and crafts, beauty supplies, carpet and flooring, clothing, consumer electronics, entertainment (books, music, movies), furniture, home and garden, jewelry, paint, photo services, sports equipment," and toys.

 

A spokesperson from the Agency of Commerce and Community Development told WCAX-TV that the restrictions are not new, and were part of Gov. Phil Scott's (R) original "Stay Home, Stay Safe" executive order signed on March 24, which ordered all non-essential businesses to close. However, the press release about big box stores was sent out on March 31.

 

A post on a public Facebook group for citizens in communities in and around Bennington County urged people not to "panic" over the new order, and posted photos from a local Walmart showing aisles and entire departments taped off with a notice to customers reading: "By order of the state of Vermont, items in this 'non-essential' area are not available for purchase."

A similar crackdown has been imposed in Colorado's Summit County, and in the city of Chicopee, Massachusetts.

Wilson's comments are similar to those made by New York Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul in an op-ed in The Hill, co-written by Lauren Leader. They wrote:

 

76 percent of the health care workforce is female. A majority of the nurses, nurse practitioners, health aides and even a majority of doctors under the age of 45 are female. These everyday heroes are working tireless hours to save lives, while at the same time trying to protect their own health and the well-being of their families.

 

It's not just women in health care who are bearing the brunt of this crisis. Think about this: women comprise the majority in most of the economic sectors hit hardest economically by the shut down of our economy. 40 percent of mothers in the U.S. are the primary breadwinners. Supreme Court Gives RBG Space For 'Essential' Workouts

Law360 (March 31, 2020, 6:42 PM EDT) – U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been enjoying exclusive access to a private workout space at the court during the coronavirus pandemic, as her doctors have deemed her training sessions "essential to her well-being."

 

The court said Wednesday that, at the 87-year-old justice’s request, it set aside "limited private space" by its health facility for her to use for her famous exercise regimen. In a statement, the court said "[t]he space is being used exclusively by the justice. No other justices are using the space, and the employee gym is closed to all users."

 

The statement comes after Law360 reported Tuesday that Justice Ginsburg had still been holding her in-person workout sessions with longtime personal trainer Bryant Johnson during the coronavirus crisis, at a time when the Supreme Court has been closed to the public and oral arguments indefinitely postponed.

 

In an interview with Law360, Johnson said that the two were taking precautions to wipe down equipment, wash their hands and keep their distance. He said that he had also canceled his appointments with his other clients and was only working with the justice.

 

"Everybody's been shut down. The only reason why I didn't shut the justice down is because, hey, she ain't having it," said Johnson, who spent over 30 years in the U.S. Army and now works in D.C.'s federal district court. "She has that grandfather status to me and if she wants to train, that’s the least that I can do."

 

The current status of the in-person training sessions is unclear. In an email to New York Magazine's The Cut, Johnson said that the pair stopped meeting as of Wednesday in light of D.C.’s stay-at-home order taking effect. The court’s Wednesday statement, however, did not say whether the city’s stay-at-home order will impact the justice’s training, only that "[h]er doctors share her view that the training sessions are essential to her well-being."

 

News that Justice Ginsburg — an octogenarian, four-time cancer survivor — was still doing in-person sessions with a trainer sparked criticism from progressives who fear that the justice could be replaced by President Donald Trump if she dies or becomes incapacitated by illness. The novel coronavirus pandemic has thrown a wrench in the ongoing Supreme Court term. The number of suspected modern slavery victims in the UK has surged to a record high of more than 10,000 – up 52 per cent in a year, new figures show.

 

Home Office data reveals 10,627 potential victims of trafficking were referred to the UK’s framework for identifying modern slavery abuses last year, compared with 6,993 in 2018.

 

The figure has been increasing year-on-year, but the increase is considerably more stark than the previous year when it rose by 36 per cent.

 

The majority – 80 per cent – of referrals made in 2019 are still waiting for a decision to be made as to whether they are a confirmed victim, which will stoke concerns about a growing backlog in the system.

 

A total of 8,429 people referred last year are awaiting a conclusive grounds decision, compared with 2,657 (38 per cent) of referrals made in 2018.
