Germany: AfD’s Uwe Junge announces retirement; Wing dispute over

Uwe Junge, the Chairman of the Alternative for Germany’s (AfD) group in the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament, announced that he will be retiring from politics when his term ends in 2021.

Junge, 62, made the announcement on Sunday, stating that he is leaving politics for health reasons, according to a report by Junge Freiheit. Previously an officer in the Bundeswehr, he has been a member of the AfD since it was established in 2013. From 2015 until 2019, he was the AfD’s Chairman for the Rhineland-Palatinate, and since 2016 he has been a member of the state parliament and the Chairman of its parliamentary group. He was unsuccessful in being elected to the AfD’s federal board, however.

Local elections will be held in Rhineland-Palatinate in March next year.

Junge has repeatedly tried to distance himself from Björn Höcke, the AfD’s Chairman for Thuringia, who is seen as the leader of the party’s “far-Right” faction, known as Der Flügel (“the Wing”). Höcke’s branch of the party was placed under surveillance by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution for being “against the democratic order” earlier this year. Junge was one of many AfD leaders who asked for Höcke’s faction to be dissolved when the announcement was made. In response, Höcke requested that the members of his wing cease their activities.

Jörg Meuthen, the AfD’s federal spokesman and one of its national leaders, has expressed the party’s commitment to remaining unified in spite of these internal conflicts.

Junge has been attacked by Left-wing extremists numerous times during his AfD career. In 2016 he was assaulted by four people in Mainz, and suffered a fracture to the zygomatic bone in his skull. And in 2017, his car was set on fire in his own driveway. It was only the rapid response of the local fire brigade that prevented the flames from spreading to Junge’s home.

AfD politicians are frequently attacked by Left-wing extremists. Last month, Tino Chrupalla, one of the party’s national leaders, was injured when radicals set fire to his car, as previously reported by Voice of Europe.

Tesla Cutting "Hundreds" Of Contractors From California And Nevada Factories

Just weeks after Tesla decided to argue with the Alameda County Sheriff's department in an attempt to keep its workers coming into work during a global pandemic lockdown, the gate is now swinging in the other direction.

Tesla is now reportedly cutting hundreds of contractors from its California and Nevada car and battery plants, according to CNBC.

The cuts will affect temporary workers at the company's Fremont plant and its Reno Gigafactory. Many contractors working in temporary positions for Tesla were hoping to eventually move into full-time roles. Instead, they are likely heading back to the unemployment line or their respective staffing agencies.

“It is with my deepest regret that I must inform you that the Tesla factory shutdown has been extended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and as a result, Tesla has requested to end all contract assignments effective immediately,” Balance Staffing was forced to tell its workers, via e-mail.

The agency said they would do their best to find the contractors other work and that the dismissals from Tesla were not a reflection of the quality of their work.

Other contractors employed at Tesla from similar agencies received the same types of notices. Recall, we reported on March 19 when Musk finally wound up suspending production at his Fremont factory, days after government mandated lockdown orders went into effect.

The government models used to predict the extent of the coronavirus pandemic are off by huge margins in the latest coronavirus tracking numbers.

The government predictions reported by the IHME Covid Tracking (https://covidtracking.com/data/ ) for Apr 5th were as follows:

– All beds needed: 179,267

– ICU beds needed: 33,176

– Invasive ventilators: 26,544

These numbers were posted on their website on Sunday.

Those were the predictions.

The actual numbers as recorded at The Covid Tracking Project:

– Actual hospitalizations: 22,158

– In ICU: 5,207

– On ventilator: 656

The actual numbers show:

Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House Coronavirus Task Force response coordinator, is under fire from some conservatives for purportedly no longer being licensed to practice medicine in Pennsylvania, where her license expired in 2014.

However, a medical license or a medical degree is not required to be an expert immunologist or epidemiologist, critics fail to point out.

“There’s certainly individuals that have PhDs who are immunologists and people working in labs with less than a PhD,” Dr. Tom Price, a medical doctor and President Trump’s former Health and Human Services secretary, told Just the News.

“In terms of working as an immunologist in the world of public health service or the National Institutes of Health or the [Centers For Disease Control] CDC or the like, there are many, many immunologists and epidemiologists who don’t hold either an M.D. or a D.O. [doctor of osteopathy] degree, and they are incredibly pivotal to the whole healthcare team.”

Birx is listed in Pennsylvania records as residing in Maryland, and is reportedly not licensed in that state either.

She graduated from Pennsylvania State College of Medicine, in Hershey, in 1980 and earned a state medical license in 1987. According to Birx’s official State Department biography, starting in 1980, she trained in internal medicine and basic and clinical immunology at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health.

Her biography also states that Birx is board certified in internal medicine, allergy and immunology, and diagnostic and clinical laboratory immunology.

“Dr. Birx has practiced and has given remarkable service to the country,” Price also said. “She is an extremely knowledgeable and dynamic individual. She has dedicated her life to public health and public service.”

Price said House rules prohibit sitting members from continuing to practice medicine, something that affected him during his stint as a Georgia congressman.

Senators don’t face that same restriction, with Price noting that the late Dr. Tom Coburn, a former Oklahoma senator, who recently passed away, continued his obstetrics-gynecology practice while in office, and that ophthalmologist Dr. Rand Paul, a senator from Kentucky (and the first sitting senator to test positive for coronavirus), continues his practice while in office.

The rollout of immunity certificates across the world will likely be government-issued to first responders and citizens who have developed resistance to COVID-19.

People who have contracted the virus and have recovered, normally develop antibodies to fight the virus, could be their golden ticket to escape regions that have strict social distancing measures and or lockdowns.

Trump Nominates White House Lawyer To Serve As ‘Special Inspector General For Pandemic Recovery’

President Donald Trump officially nominated Brian Miller on Monday to serve as the Special Inspector General for Pandemic Recovery, a new position with the Treasury Department with oversight powers into the government’s coronavirus response.

Miller currently serves as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Associate Counsel in the Office of White House Counsel. Trump first announced his intent to nominate Miller to this new position Friday.

The Senate received the nomination Monday morning and previously confirmed him to serve as the IG for the General Services Administration, where according to the White house, “he led more than 300 auditors, special agents, attorneys, and support staff in conducting nationwide audits and investigations.”

“Miller also served in high-level positions within the Department of Justice, including as Senior Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General and as Special Counsel on Healthcare Fraud,” the White House added. “He also served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia, where he handled civil fraud, False Claims Act, criminal, and appellate cases.”

Miller’s nomination comes shortly after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, at the suggestion of Democratic California Rep. Adam Schiff, launched a new select committee to investigate the president’s response to the pandemic.

“We face a deadly virus and a battered economy with millions of Americans suddenly out of work. Congress has taken an important step in leading this crisis by passing three bills with over $2 trillion in emergency relief,” she said of the effort. “We need to ensure those dollars are spent carefully and effectively.”

House Majority Whip James Clyburn of South Carolina will chair the committee.

The White House did not respond to the Daily Caller’s inquiries on when they would like to see a confirmation vote on Miller. Aides for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell confirmed they had received the nomination but did not elaborate when asked about a potential timeline for a confirmation vote.

George Soros-Funded Group Pushes Nationwide Drop Boxes for Voting

The Brennan Center for Justice, which is heavily financed by George Soros, is advocating the use of drop boxes to deposit ballots on voting day this November as part of a suggested overhaul of the U.S. voting system due to the Chinese coronavirus pandemic.

With other Soros-financed groups, the Brennan Center has been leading a campaign advocating a “vote by mail” system in the upcoming presidential election, citing fears that coronavirus makes it too dangerous to vote in person. Some of the groups are using the coronavirus crisis to push permanent changes to the way Americans vote.

Analysts have posited that such proposals help the Democratic Party. Republicans specifically fear the prospect of voter fraud, since mail-in voting would be harder to authenticate.

Now Brennan has released a preliminary $2 billion budget that breaks down the costs of a implementing the organization’s blueprint for voting reform during the pandemic. The blueprint that has been widely cited by news media as making a central argument for a universal vote-by-mail option, while Democrats have used Brennan’s plan to push voter reform legislation.

Part of Brennan’s budget calls for jurisdictions to “offer secure drop boxes in accessible locations for voters to drop off ballots directly.”

The estimate allocates $82 million to $117 million for drop box purchase and installation and some $35 million to $47 million for operation and maintenance.

“Drop boxes must be equipped with adequate security measures, such as cameras,” the budget states without providing more specifics about security for the boxes.

The plan doesn’t delineate rules for where such drop boxes could be located. Already California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington use drop boxes statewide and have various locations set up that are not located at official in-person balloting stations.

The Brennan Center’s plan calls for a “universal vote-by-mail option for all voters.” The budget estimates $54 million to $89 million for increased ballot printing and $413 million to $593 million for extra postage costs.

To alert the public about changes to the voting method, the Brennan Center wants a $252.1 million public education campaign which “must include advertising in non-English languages.”

Brennan also wants $85.9 million to bolster online voter registration and it advocates implementing same-day registration. The Brennan blueprint allows for mail-in ballots to be processed prior to the close of polls on Election Day.

The document lobbies for polling place modification and preparation including “same-day registration, real-time address updates, and provisional balloting for certain individuals.” Brennan doesn’t define which “certain individuals” should receive same-day registration.

Brennan also advocates expanded early voting, with states offering at least two weeks of early in-person voting or a minimum of five days.

LA doctor seeing success with hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19

LOS ANGELES (KABC) – A Los Angeles doctor said he is seeing significant success in prescribing the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine in combination with zinc to treat patients with severe symptoms of COVID-19.

Hydroxychloroquine has been touted as a possible treatment for COVID-19 by President Trump among others, but it remains controversial as some experts believe it is unproven and may not be effective.

The drug has long been used for treatment of malaria and conditions such as lupus and arthritis but is not technically approved by the FDA for COVID-19. The agency, however, is encouraging trials and has provided limited emergency authorization for its use to treat COVID-19 patients.

Dr. Anthony Cardillo said he has seen very promising results when prescribing hydroxychloroquine in combination with zinc for the most severely-ill COVID-19 patients.

"Every patient I've prescribed it to has been very, very ill and within 8 to 12 hours, they were basically symptom-free," Cardillo told Eyewitness News. "So clinically I am seeing a resolution."

Cardillo is the CEO of Mend Urgent Care, which has locations in Sherman Oaks, Van Nuys and Burbank.

He said he has found it only works if combined with zinc. The drug, he said, opens a channel for the zinc to enter the cell and block virus replication.

He added that the drug should not be prescribed for those who are presenting only mild symptoms, as there are concerns about shortages for patients with other conditions who need to take the drug on a regular basis.

"We have to be cautious and mindful that we don't prescribe it for patients who have COVID who are well," Cardillo said. "It should be reserved for people who are really sick, in the hospital or at home very sick, who need that medication. Otherwise we're going to blow through our supply for patients that take it regularly for other disease processes."

Chloroquine, or hydroxychloroquine, has been approved to treat and prevent malaria since 1944. Because the drug is on the market, doctors can use it for off-label purposes.

President Trump has touted it as a possible cure, but the government's top coronavirus expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, has been much more cautious, saying there is only "anecdotal evidence" demonstrating its effectiveness.

Experts are also concerned about potential misuse. A man in Arizona died after taking a similar drug, chloroquine phosphate, in an apparent attempt to self-medicate. The man did not take the pharmaceutical version of the drug, but a version used at aquariums to clean fish tanks.

The FDA advises against taking any form of chloroquine unless prescribed by a doctor and obtained from a legitimate source.

Another drug that has shown some potential for treating COVID-19 is remdesivir, a drug that was initially developed as a potential treatment for Ebola. A Palo Alto woman was accepted into a clinical trial for remdesivir and said it was effective in improving her condition.

UK: 4,000 Prisoners to Be Released Early to Curb Coronavirus in Jails

The United Kingdom is set to release thousands of convicted criminals onto the streets in an attempt to slow the spread of the Chinese coronavirus in the prison system.

The Ministry of Justice announced that some 4,000 prisoners in England and Wales, who are deemed to be low-risk and who have two months or less left to serve of their sentences, will be set free in the coming weeks. The prisoners will be electronically tagged and released on licence.

The move is seen as an attempt to prevent an outbreak in the prison system, in which many inmates are in close contact with one another and many of whom share cells.

“This government is committed to ensuring that justice is served to those who break the law. But this is an unprecedented situation because if coronavirus takes hold in our prisons, the NHS could be overwhelmed and more lives put at risk,” Justice Secretary Robert Buckland said per The Guardian.

“All prisoners will face a tough risk assessment and must comply with strict conditions, including an electronic tag, while they are closely monitored. Those that do not will be recalled to prison,” he added.

Under the terms of the early release scheme, prisoners who have been convicted of violent or sexual offences or are deemed to be a threat to children will not be eligible for release. Those criminals that are believed to be a national security threat will not be released, either.

Prisoners who have been convicted of crimes connected to the COVID-19 pandemic or have displayed symptoms of coronavirus will also be barred from early release.

The pandemic has already placed considerable strain on Britain’s prison system, with an estimated 8,000 prison employees on leave due to the virus, representing a quarter of the nation’s workforce.

Ian Lawrence, the general secretary of the National Probation Service trade union, Napo, said that probation services in the UK are “already over-stretched”.

“Probation providers must work to ensure this new cohort can be supervised safely and not cause additional operational pressure and stress to the workforce,” Lawrence told the BBC.

So far, Northern Ireland, France, Australia, Germany, Canada, Iran, and the U.S. state of California have released prisoners early in an attempt to slow the spread of coronavirus.

The Pandemic Has Led to a Huge, Global Drop in Air Pollution

The coronavirus pandemic is shutting down industrial activity and temporarily slashing air pollution levels around the world, satellite imagery from the European Space Agency shows.

One expert said the sudden shift represented the “largest-scale experiment ever,” in terms of the reduction of industrial emissions.

Readings from ESA’s Sentinel-5P satellite show that over the past six weeks, levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) over cities and industrial clusters in Asia and Europe were markedly lower than in the same period last year.

Nitrogen dioxide is produced from car engines, power plants and other industrial processes and is thought to exacerbate respiratory illnesses such as asthma.

While not a greenhouse gas itself, the pollutant originates from the same activities and industrial sectors that are responsible for a large share of the world’s carbon emissions and that drive global heating.

Paul Monks, professor of air pollution at the University of Leicester, predicted there will be important lessons to learn. “We are now, inadvertently, conducting the largest-scale experiment ever seen,” he said. “Are we looking at what we might see in the future if we can move to a low-carbon economy? Not to denigrate the loss of life, but this might give us some hope from something terrible. To see what can be achieved.”

Monks, the former chair of the UK government’s science advisory committee on air quality, said that a reduction in air pollution could bring some health benefits, though they were unlikely to offset loss of life from the disease.

“It seems entirely probable that a reduction in air pollution will be beneficial to people in susceptible categories, for example some asthma sufferers,” he said. “It could reduce the spread of disease. A high level of air pollution exacerbates viral uptake because it inflames and lowers immunity.” Agriculture could also get a boost because pollution stunts plant growth, he added.

The World Health Organization describes NO 2 as “a toxic gas which causes significant inflammation of the airways” at concentrations above 200 micrograms per cubic meter. During a daily press briefing last week, an official from the World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledged that lockdowns in nations across the world have “in some senses” driven infections from off the street to inside the home.

Praising efforts in Singapore, Dr. Micheal Ryan, Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program, suggested there be medical professionals going door to door to find those likely infected, and “remove” them from the home for “dignified” isolation.

“That’s what I was saying previously … the transition from movement restrictions and shutdowns and stay-at-home orders can only be made if we have in place the means to be able to detect suspect cases, isolate confirmed cases, track contacts, and follow up on the contacts’ health at all times,” explained Dr. Ryan, “and then isolate any of those people who become sick themselves.”

The Chinese government has attempted to cover up the China-originated novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, for months, reportedly silencing whistleblowers and allegedly lying about the real death toll, which has been estimated to be as high as 40,000. On their part, the WHO has come under increasing scrutiny for “act[ing] as Beijing’s handmaid,” as one New York Post column phrased it.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) – To help combat COVID-19, the Air Force has released information that supplements Department of Defense guidance on the use of cloth face coverings, effective immediately.

To the extent practical, without significantly impacting mission, all individuals on Department of the Air Force property, installations and facilities are required to wear cloth face coverings when they cannot maintain six feet of physical distance in public areas or work centers.

This guidance applies to Total Force military personnel, DOD civilian employees and contractors, family members and all individuals on DAF property, installations and facilities, and does not apply within a personal residence on a military installation.

Any cloth items worn as face coverings (e.g., neck gaiters, neck warmers, balaclavas, etc.) should be functional, cleaned and maintained in compliance with current Air Force instructions, and should cover the mouth and nose.

As safety is the primary concern, commanders will decide where mission safety necessitates deviation from this guidance, for example when the cloth face covering could interfere with other facial gear. Until issued items are fully available, commanders and units may deviate in regard to uniformity while ensuring face coverings worn by uniformed military members are conservative, professional and in keeping with dignity and respect.

For civilian employees, use of a cloth face covering is strongly encouraged. Commanders who wish to mandate cloth face covering for civilian employees under this memo must either furnish them or provide a uniform allowance per AFI 36-128, Pay Setting and Allowances, published May 17, 2019.

If a commander determines the purchase and issuance of cloth face coverings is necessary for mission requirements, they should consult with legal and comptroller about purchasing and issuing the coverings.

N95 and surgical masks should be reserved for health care workers.

During this time, security checkpoints may require the lowering of masks to verify identification.

Backlash after UK minister praises only Jewish contribution to coronavirus fight

Michael Gove is facing a backlash after he praised the Jewish contribution to the fight against coronavirus, but failed to acknowledge the efforts of Muslims and other religions to combat the disease.

In an address during a virtual Shabbaton at 5:30pm on Friday, Gove addressed members of 50 Jewish congregations across the country.

Forbes magazine estimates Preston's ownership of Life Care gives him a personal wealth of $2.1 billion enough to make him the richest man in Southeast Tennessee and land him on Forbes list of the 400 richest people in America.

Federal prosecutors allege Life Care Centers has bilked the federal government of hundreds of millions of dollars through a systematic Medicare fraud scheme since 2006. A federal investigation of the company began in 2008 when Life Care employees in Florida and Tennessee filed whistle blower lawsuits claiming the company told employees to maximize unnecessary therapies for patients to get more Medicare reimbursements. Life Care is paid nearly $1 billion a year in Medicare payments.

The whisteblower lawsuit was combined with a government lawsuit against Life Care in 2012 and the case is still going through evidence discovery. Prosecutors claim the Medicare fraud began at the highest levels of the company, including claims that Preston forbade his compliance department from conducting unannounced inspections at facilities. Critics of Life Care say the company has made staff sacrifices in order to keep profits up.

“Suppose the president is right. And this is the ‘toughest week.’ And we average 1,500 deaths a day. That gets us to almost 20,000 deaths by April 12, By then the trend should clearly be down, I don’t think it will be arguable,” he continued.

Life Care Centers of America Inc. (Life Care) and its owner, Forrest L. Preston, have agreed to pay $145 million to resolve a government lawsuit alleging that Life Care violated the False Claims Act by knowingly causing skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) to submit false claims to Medicare and TRICARE for rehabilitation therapy services that were not reasonable, necessary or skilled, the Department of Justice announced today.  Life Care, based in Cleveland, Tennessee, owns and operates more than 220 skilled nursing facilities across the country.

“This resolution is the largest settlement with a skilled nursing facility chain in the department’s history,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Division.  “It is critically important that we protect the integrity of government health care programs by ensuring that services are provided based on clinical rather than financial considerations.”

This settlement resolves allegations that between Jan. 1, 2006 and Feb. 28, 2013, Life Care submitted false claims for rehabilitation therapy by engaging in a systematic effort to increase its Medicare and TRICARE billings.  Medicare reimburses skilled nursing facilities at a daily rate that reflects the skilled therapy and nursing needs of their qualifying patients.  The greater the skilled therapy and nursing needs of the patient, the higher the level of Medicare reimbursement.  The highest level of Medicare reimbursement for skilled nursing facilities is for “Ultra High” patients who require a minimum of 720 minutes of skilled therapy from two therapy disciplines (e.g., physical, occupational, speech), one of which has to be provided five days a week.

In its first major report looking at the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on children, the CDC analyzed confirmed cases from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and four U.S. territories that occurred between Feb.12 and April 2. U.S health officials examined 149,760 cases where age was known and found that 2,572 of the cases, or 1.7%, were younger than 18.

At least 73% of the pediatric patients had symptoms such as fever, cough or shortness of breath, according to the CDC’s findings. About 5.7% of the children, or the 20% of those for whom hospitalization status was known, were hospitalized, the agency said.

How US fell behind in coronavirus testing

Three deaths were reported during this time period, though they are suspected of having COVID-19, public officials are still working to confirm whether that was the likely cause of the deaths.

“These data support previous findings that children with COVID-19 might not have reported fever or cough as often as do adults,” the CDC wrote in its report. “Whereas most COVID-19 cases in children are not severe, serious COVID-19 illness resulting in hospitalization still occurs in this age group.”

The CDC said the findings were in line with data from researchers in China, where the virus emerged and cases have reached more than 82,000 as of Monday morning, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. There are more than 338,000 cases in the U.S., according to Johns Hopkins.

A recent study, which was published online in the journal Pediatrics, looked at 2,143 cases of children with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 that were reported to the Chinese CDC between Jan. 16 and Feb. 8.

That study found that a number of children in China have developed severe or critical disease and one child has died. More than 90% of the cases were asymptomatic, mild or moderate cases. However, nearly 6% of the children’s cases were severe or critical, compared with 18.5% for adults.

Early in the outbreak, researchers and infectious disease experts said the virus appeared to be sparing children while being particularly severe in the elderly and those with underlying health conditions. However, one researcher noted that the apparent lack of children among confirmed coronavirus cases could also be because they are getting infected but developing more mild symptoms that aren’t being reported to local authorities.

“The data is coming out in so many places and so many forms,” Marc Lipsitch, a professor of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, said in February.

The differences in symptoms among different age groups are seen in other respiratory illnesses as well. The seasonal flu, which infects millions in the U.S. each year, is usually more severe in adults than children.

Thousands of children are hospitalized each year in the U.S. from the flu, but death is rare, according to the CDC. However, between 50% and 70% of flu-related hospitalizations in the U.S. occur in people 65 years and older, and between 70% and 85% of deaths occur in the same age group, the CDC says.

Symptoms of the coronavirus can include a sore throat, runny nose, diarrhea, fever or pneumonia and can progress to multiple organ failure or even death in some cases, according to the World Health Organization.

The CDC recommended Tuesday that Americans practice social distancing, writing “everyday preventive behaviors remain important for all age groups as patients will less serious illness and those without symptoms likely play an import role in disease transmission.”

America's major medical society specializing in the treatment of respiratory dieases has endorsed using hydroxychloroquine for seriously ill hospitalized coronavirus patients. The Thoracic Society said its guidelines are based on input from an international task force comprised of doctors from medical centers that are currently treating COVID-19 patients. The medical group said evidence about the impact of hydroxychloroquine is “contradictory” but it is worth experimenting with during a public health crisis to treat very sick patients. “We believe that in urgent situations like a pandemic, we can learn while treating by collecting real-world data,” said Dr. Kevin Wilson, chief of guidelines and documents at the American Thoracic Society. “There are in vitro studies that suggest that hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine have activity against SARS-CoV-2019, the virus that causes COVID-19,” Wilson said. But he also said several controlled trials from China and France “all have serious flaws and inconsistent findings. … Thus, the bottom line is, whether hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine confer benefits to patients with COVID-19 are unanswered questions.”
