Tesla sues California county in virus factory closure fight, threatens to leave

Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) sued local authorities in California on Saturday as the electric carmaker pushed to re-open its factory there and Chief Executive Elon Musk threatened to move Tesla’s headquarters and future programs from the state to Texas or Nevada. Musk has been pushing to re-open Tesla’s Fremont, California, factory after Alameda County’s health department said the carmaker must not reopen because local lockdown measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus remain in effect.

Tesla filed a lawsuit against the county on Saturday, calling the continued restrictions a “power-grab” by the county since California’s governor had said on Thursday that manufacturers in the state would be allowed to reopen.

The company said Alameda was going against the federal and California constitutions, as well as defying the governor’s order, in the lawsuit filed in San Francisco federal court.

Alameda County, where the Fremont factory is located, is scheduled to remain shut until the end of May, with only essential businesses allowed to reopen. County officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the lawsuit.

The outspoken Musk also took to Twitter on Saturday to complain and threatened to leave the state.

"If we even retain Fremont manufacturing activity at all, it will be dependen (sp) on how Tesla is treated in the future," he tweeted here referring to the San Francisco Bay area facility that is Tesla's only U.S. vehicle factory.

Alameda County said on Saturday that it has been working with Tesla to develop a safety plan that “allows for reopening while protecting the health and well-being of the thousands of employees” that work at the factory and that it looks forward to coming to an agreement on a safety plan very soon.

Fremont Mayor Lily Mei expressed concern about the potential economic implications of continuing the shelter-in-place order without provisions for manufacturers such as Tesla to resume. Mei on Saturday urged the county to work with businesses on “acceptable guidelines for re-opening.” Musk had told employees on Thursday that limited production would restart at Fremont on Friday afternoon.

Tesla builds more than 415,000 cars per year at the Fremont plant and moving the entire production facility would be a massive undertaking.

First border wall contract awarded for Laredo, Texas at $275 million

McALLEN, TEXAS (Border Report) — A $275 million contract has been awarded to an Alabama company to start construction of a 14-mile border wall in Laredo, Texas.

Similar to other portions of border wall being built in South Texas and throughout the Southwest, this project will consist of a 30-foot-high bollard wall with all weather roads, enforcement cameras and special lighting, according to a announcement made by U.S. Customs and Border Protection late Friday.

This will be the first portion of a border wall to go up in Laredo, which sits across the Rio Grande from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.

The contract was awarded to Caddell Construction Company LLC of Montgomery, Alabama, and construction is slated to begin in January 2021. However, much of the land in Webb County is privately owned and must be obtained before construction can begin.

The City of Laredo in February said it would not give CBP access to any city-owned property and would go to court to halt wall construction if necessary. And in adjacent Zapata County, county commissioners voted to deny Border Patrol right of entry onto county property.

Hundreds of Laredoans have voiced opposition to a border wall encircling their city. Since last fall they have held a river sit-in and a downtown march, drawing supporters from across the nation.

Most recently, U.S. Reps. Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez, two Democrats from Texas, filed legislation to designate the area as a historic heritage corridor that might possibly impact border wall plans, Gonzalez told Border Report.

Nevertheless, it appears that construction is slated to go forward.

Michael Caputo Releases Receipts, Shows Rep. Eric Swalwell Was Witness Tampering

Rep. Eric Swalwell might be in a bit of trouble, or at least he would be if he were a Republican. Michael Caputo, a now cleared target of the Mueller investigation, has released text messages that purport to show Swalwell committed witness tampering. This was in relation to Caputo’s testimony before the special counsel. Here’s the text, which Caputo replied with after David Reaboi noted a question by Swalwell in the recent House Russia investigation transcript release.

That sounds an awful like Swalwell is attempting to intimidate a witness, one which was part of two ongoing investigations. It also sounds incredibly immature and petty. Yet, this was the tack many Russia truthers took for years. They were so certain they were right and absolutely positive that everyone around Trump would end up in jail over supposed collusion. In the end, it took Mueller pursuing process crimes to collect a few scalps (one of which has now had the charges cropped against him). But perhaps the most incredible part about this is that Swalwell was one of the crazy people insisting that President Trump indirectly tweeting about Robert Muller was absolutely “witness tampering.” Here’s a video reminder of that.

Who would have ever thought a guy like Swalwell could be a massive hypocrite? Well, ok, we all thought that. He accused Trump of witness tampering twice, once regarding Mueller and another time regarding Marie Yavonovitch, but here he is sending mean girl tweets to Michael Caputo trying to intimidate him over his testimony. You can’t make this stuff up. (video attached next post)

Drone Finds Long Lost Hidden Fort of Scottish Hero William Wallace

Is this the stronghold of freedom fighter William Wallace? It’s pretty overgrown now, but a combination of drone flight and 3D tech appears to have found “Wallace’s House” in southern Scotland. From this fort, the legendary thorn in England’s side planned an attack on nearby Lochmaben Castle in Dumfries and Galloway.

As befitting the meeting place of William Wallace, “it must have been a strong place of defence.” Wallace is said to have occupied the “House” along with 16 men at arms in the late 13th century. Setting out, they “sallied forth to annoy the English garrison” – though of course there was far more than irritation involved in the resulting confrontation! Wallace eventually captured the prize of Lochmaben Castle, following an action-packed pursuit by Sir Hugh of Moreland and Greystock.

By this stage, Wallace was reaching the end of his brief but turbulent time as a resistance leader. This started in 1297 and ended with his end in 1305, made famous by the “FREEEEDOM”ye. Around the time of Lochmaben, he’d been knighted and given the title of ‘Guardian of the Kingdom’. This was in the name of John Balliol, former King of Scotland who was dethroned after Edward I seized control north of the border.

Not much is recorded about Wallace’s formative years. BBC History writes he “was born in the 1270s in Elderslie in Renfrewshire into a gentry family.” His main victories included the Battle of Stirling Bridge (1297). The historical figure is well known to movie audiences through Mel Gibson’s Braveheart (1995), a fictionalized version where Wallace was quite literally painted as a force of nature. Less vivid is the truth, as described by the BBC who state “Wallace’s strategy was to avoid confrontation and gradually withdraw. He destroyed the countryside as he went, forcing Edward to march deeper and deeper into Scotland.”

The Oscar-winning film will always be a part of William Wallace’s legend. However it’s the land that carries the true echoes of his extraordinary life.

A Chinese rocket measuring around 100 feet long that launched earlier this month will likely plunge back into Earth’s atmosphere some time Monday, becoming the most massive object in decades to fall out of orbit in an uncontrolled manner.

The core stage of China’s Long March 5B rocket is expected to fall back to Earth unguided after nearly a week in orbit. The Long March 5B rocket launched May 5 with a prototype for a next-generation Chinese crew capsule.

As of Saturday, the rocket stage was circling Earth in an elliptical orbit ranging between 94 miles (152 kilometers) and 167 miles (270 kilometers) in altitude, according to U.S. military tracking data. A prediction issued Saturday by the U.S. military, which tracks objects in orbit, forecasts the rocket’s re-entry in a 24-hour period between 2335 GMT (7:35 p.m. EDT) Sunday and 2335 GMT (7:35 p.m. EDT) Monday.

But uncontrolled re-entries are difficult to predict, and the forecast could change as ground-based radars continue tracking the Long March 5B rocket body in orbit. Changes in atmospheric drag and solar activity could move time of re-entry earlier or later.

A one-minute error in predicting the re-entry time changes the location of potential falling debris by nearly 300 miles, or about 500 kilometers, according to the Aerospace Corp.

The Long March 5B rocket body is in an orbit that flies between 41.1 degrees north and south latitude, meaning the re-entry could occur as far north as around New York City, or as far south as Wellington, New Zealand.

Maj. Cody Chiles, a Combined Force Space Component Command spokesperson, said Friday that the U.S. Space Force’s 18th Space Control Squadron is tracking the Chinese Long March 5B rocket body. The object is approximately 20 meters squared in size, Chiles said in response to an inquiry from Spaceflight Now.

The core stage of the Long March 5B rocket measures around 100 feet (30 meters) long and 16 feet (5 meters) wide.

Barr laid out how there was no legitimate investigative predicate to go after Flynn, that indeed prior to January 4, 2017, the Crossfire Razor investigation was being closed. Yet, after a meeting on Jan. 5, that included Barack Obama, Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, FBI Director James Comey, suddenly it came back online to interview Michael Flynn to try to catch him in a “perjury trap.” Barr hinted that there might be more coming on that because he noted that U.S. Attorney John Durham was looking into “the whole pattern of conduct.” But the Flynn comments weren’t the only interesting part of his interview with Herridge. As he said, he’s looking at the “whole pattern of conduct.”

He was also bothered by Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation which he said “ignored” evidence of the Russian disinformation in the dossier of Christopher Steele. Indeed. If he’s looking at the “whole pattern of conduct” and he’s “very concerned” about that, I wonder if he’s also looking at why Mueller didn’t. If the Mueller investigation was supposed to be looking at Russian interference, why wasn’t he looking into that and calling it out? Why wasn’t he looking at the Democratic involvement in that? There was far more evidence of Russian connection with the Democrats than there ever was with the Trump team. So you have to ask why, since that was staring him in the face and he knew that was the case.

Shimon Peres, then the deputy defense minister who later would lead the country as prime minister for two stints and then become president, improvised the statement when he was surprised by Kennedy during a meeting Peres had scheduled with Kennedy’s adviser, Myer Feldman, who also functioned as the administration’s liaison to Israel and the U.S. Jewish community. Unbeknownst to Peres, Kennedy and Feldman had planned the “surprise” encounter.

According to a Hebrew-language Foreign Ministry of Israel account of the April 2 meeting, Kennedy asked Peres into the Oval Office for 30 minutes and questioned him on Israel’s nuclear capacity.
