Croatia: NGO files charges against police for abusing migrants

 

The Center for Peace Studies, a pro-β€œhuman rights” Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), filed a criminal complaint against the Croatian police yesterday for allegedly abusing illegal migrants who attempt to cross the border from Bosnia.

 

The complaint, which was filed with the Croatian State Attorney’s Office, claims that 33 migrants were subjected to β€œdegrading treatment” by officers at the border and were then illegally sent back to Bosnia and Herzegovina without due process.

 

The allegations first surfaced last month in the British newspaper The Guardian, which included the charge that Croatian officers were shaving illegal migrants’ heads and then spray-painting crosses on their heads, as previously reported by Voice of Europe. Additionally, the European Court of Human Rights indicated last month that three Syrian refugees have accused the Croatian authorities of deporting them from Croatia to Bosnia in October 2018 after they were denied an individual assessment of their case, which is a crime under human rights legislation. One of the three further said that he was beaten by officers. Attorneys from the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights is suing the Croatian authorities on their behalf.

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage took to social media to voice his objection to the violence. β€œThis protest in London now has nothing to do with George Floyd,” he tweeted. β€œIt is anarchy in the face of weak leadership. Murray’s bail was set $10,000 pre-arraignment, and he is no longer in police custody, the Dukes County Sheriff’s Office told HollywoodLife. His next court date is July 31.

 

There were reportedly no other incidents reported at the Five Corners protest.

 

Demonstrations across the nation have cooled over the last week, in response to the police involved death of Minneapolis man George Floyd, following several nights of riots dominated by looting, arson, vandalism, and assaults.

Using a capital β€˜B’ in reference to black people within the body of text is a subtle, manipulative, psychological mind-game creating a false sense of emphasis and implicating that black people are a separate group, or entity. Fake Police Arrested, Allegedly Filming Video to Frame Real Cops as Racist

 

Police in Paris have arrested three men accused of impersonating officers in a video that attempted to portray real police as racists in the wake of Black Lives Matter protests.

 

The arrests were made on Sunday, but details about the incident remained unclear. Early reports suggest that the three men dressed as officers and a director and cameraman filmed a video in which the fake police arrest a black African man in front of a supermarket for theft while the real thief, a white man, is purposely let go.

 

According to investigators, the uniforms used were real and were connected to a Paris police officer who is thought to have loaned them to the actors.

 

LoΓ―c Walder, delegate of the UNSA Police union in charge of the 3rd district, reacted negatively to the video, saying: β€œSome malicious people try to use this drama to bring the French national police into disrepute. It is really important to be extra vigilant about content we view online.”

 

He stated that France was not the same as the United States, and added: β€œThe national police exercise their profession with professionalism, seriousness, and discernment. The rare abuses are systematically punished.”

 

Later in the week, the fact-checking website Check News, which is operated by the left-wing newspaper Liberation, spoke with the director of the film. He claimed it was meant to be a tribute to George Floyd, whose death had sparked protests and riots in Minneapolis and later across the United States.

 

β€œThe goal is to send a message of peace,” the 22-year-old claimed. He insisted that the original idea was to show a man stealing inexpensive goods and showing a similar scenario to George Floyd’s death, with a police officer on the thief’s neck.

 

He went on to note that an extra had proposed that they change the film to show a black man arrested falsely for the crime of a white man during the filming. He states that no scenes were actually filmed due to the police intervention and subsequent arrests of the actors.

 

β€œWhen the police arrived, they didn’t want to know anything, and they didn’t let us explain. One of the extras also expressed himself poorly: when a police officer asked him to explain what the video was, he replied that it was a racist video,” one of the actors said.

Activists defaced and scaled Abraham Lincoln’s statue in Parliament Square, London, at a Black Lives Matter rally held in defiance of Britain’s anti-coronavirus regulations.

US Marines order Confederate flag to be removed from public display

 

The US Marine Corps has officially ordered the removal of the Confederate battle flag from public display on its bases and offices, citing the flag's use by racist groups as a "threat to our core values".

 

In a statement on 5 June, the service branch said: "The Confederate battle flag has all too often been co-opted by violent extremist and racist groups whose divisive beliefs have no place in our Corps."

 

"Our history as a nation, and events like the violence in Charlottesville in 2017, highlight the divisiveness the use of the Confederate battle flag," waved by branches of the secessionist Confederate States Army during the US Civil War.

 

In an April memo outlining his intent to ban public display of the flag, Marine Corps commandant Gen David Berger said he has "focused solely on building a uniquely capable war-fighting team whose members come from all walks of life and must learn to operate side-by-side" and argued that the symbol "has shown it has the power to inflame feelings of division" and must be removed.

 

"I am mindful that many people believe that flag to be a symbol of heritage or regional pride," he said. "But I am also mindful of the feelings of pain and rejection of those who inherited the cultural memory and present effects of the scourge of slavery in our country."

Following the Memorial Day killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody, protesters have struck at statues and buildings across the US erected in the wake of the Confederacy's defeat, prompting several states to consider their removal after they were tagged with "Black Lives Matter" graffiti.

 

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced plans to begin removing monuments from the state's capital, and Randall Woodfin, mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, says he has received death threats after removing a Confederate Soldiers and Sailors monument.

 

In 2017, New Orleans was among the first cities to begin removing Jim Crow- and Confederate-era monuments, including statues of General Robert E Lee and Confederate president Jefferson Davis as well as an obelisk commemorating a white supremacist uprising that took place a decade after the Civil War. Demonstrators supporting their removal clashed with white supremacist groups for several weeks as crews worked overnight to take the statues off their pedestals. Officials there are now considering renaming street names that honour Confederate leaders.

 

The Marine Corps order doesn't apply to places where the flag is "not the main focus" of the display, including art and educational use.

 

It bans the flag from bumper stickers, mugs, clothing, posters and similar displays, as well as on all naval vessels, aircraft, government vehicles, offices and common areas, including recruitment centres.

 

The order from Marine Corps staff director Lt Gen John J Broadmeadow exempts state flags that incorporate the flag (such as Mississippi's), license plates, Confederate grave sites, and other locations where "commanders are expected to apply their best judgment informed by the spirit and intent" of the order.

If this scenario is allowed to play out, it would give immediate justification to utilize the Insurrection Act. Is the deep state this stupid? Probably. Not only will it give POTUS public support for the Insurrecton Act, but POTUS will be justified in moving all WH operations to Mar-a-Lago for the next few years, while the WH is being repaired.

 

Once again, POTUS and Q have trapped the deep state. Breach or no breach, they've either wasted resources or maybe will give POTUS exactly what he needs.

A group of approximately 100 protesters threw Molotov cocktails at the U.S. Embassy compound in Mexico. The group appeared to be in support of Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests taking place in various cities in the United States.

 

Since noon on Friday, a group of approximately 100 protesters gathered in downtown Mexico City near Paseo Reforma, near the U.S. Embassy to take part in a BLM protest. According to El Sol De Mexico, the protesters were members of Antifa and were wearing all black. The protests quickly turned into acts of vandalism. John Kelly, the retired general who served as Donald Trump's chief of staff, joined the list of high-profile military officers criticizing the president, suggesting people should at a person's 'character' and 'ethics' before voting for them.

 

'I think we need to look harder at who we elect. I think we should look at people that are running for office and put them through the filter: What is their character like? What are their ethics?' Kelly, told Anthony Scaramucci, former White House communications director, during a live-streamed interview for a conference.

 

'The separation of powers is very very important,' he said. 'No president ever is a dictator or a king.'

 

Kelly also said he agreed with Jim Mattis, the former defense secretary and retired general who rebuked Trump for dividing the country instead of bringing people together.

'I agree with him,' Kelly said.

 

'There is a concern, I think an awful big concern, that the partisanship has gotten out of hand, the tribal thing has gotten out of hand,' he noted. 'He's quite a man, Jim Mattis, and for him to do that tells you where he is relative to the concern he has for our country.'

 

Kelly defended Trump's former defense secretary on Thursday after Mattis publicly criticized the president's handling of the nationwide protests.

He also shot down Trump's claim that he fired Mattis in 2018.

 

'The president did not fire him. He did not ask for his resignation,' Kelly asserted in a Washington Post interview Thursday afternoon. 'The president has clearly forgotten how it actually happened or is confused.

'The president tweeted a very positive tweet about Jim until he started to see on Fox News their interpretation of his letter. Then he got nasty. Jim Mattis is an honorable man,' Kelly said.

 

Trump shot back Thursday night in a pair of tweets.

'John Kelly didn't know I was going to fire James Mattis, nor did he have any knowledge of my asking for a letter of resignation. Why would I tell him, he was not in my inner-circle, was totally exhausted by the job, and in the end just slinked away into obscurity. They all want to come back for a piece of the limelight!,' the president wrote.

 

Kelly, meanwhile, didn't sound positive about his time as White House chief of staff, where he tried to bring some military order and discipline to the West Wing.

 

'He'll either fire you and try to find a lackey who will tell you what he wants to hear, or will push so hard that you decide to leave,' he told Scaramucci of Trump.

 

Scaramucci - 'the Mooch' - spent 10 days as White House director of communications, which ended in Kelly firing him, and has now become a resolute Republican critic of the president.

Mattis submitted his resignation in late December 2018, and stayed on until after the New Year, amid reports of rising tensions between the Defense secretary and president.

Although Mattis had remained largely silent about his former boss, on Wednesday he released a statement criticizing Trump's handling of protests that have erupted across the country following the killing of George Floyd at the hands of a white police officer.

 

Mattis accused Trump of deliberately trying to divide Americans and likened his actions to the rhetoric of Nazis to 'divide and conquer.'

Rioters Deface Monument to Black Civil War Veterans Who Served in the Union

 

A monument honoring the first northern all-volunteer black regiment of the Union Army during the Civil War was damaged by rioters over the weekend.

 

The Shaw Memorial depicts the 54th Massachusetts Regiment led by Col. Robert Gould Shaw and stands at the edge of the Boston Common in Boston, Massachusetts.

β€œThis monument is considered one of the nation’s greatest pieces of public art and the greatest piece to come out of the Civil War,” Liz Vizza, executive director of the Friends of the Public Garden, told WBUR-FM.

 

β€œIt was, amazingly enough, dedicated 123 years ao on May 31st β€” the day it was defaced.”

On Sunday, a peaceful protest turned violent and destructive and the plywood that had been put in place to protect the statue during restoration was covered in obscene graffiti.

 

The granite backside of the monument also was painted with swear words and phrases including, β€œBlack Lives Matter,” β€œNo Justice, No Peace” and β€œPolice are Pigs.”

 

The $3 million restoration project had been granted clearance last week.

 

This was not the first time the memorial has been vandalized. It was covered in paint in 2012 and Shaw’s sword was broken off in 2015 and 2017, according to WCVB-TV.

 

Vizza was surprised that a sculpture celebrating men of color was singled out by rioters.

β€œA thousand men signed up just after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, just think about that,” she said.

Krista Marx, the Palm Beach chief judge who also heads a panel that polices judicial conduct, has potential conflicts of interest involving three prominent players embroiled in the Epstein sex-trafficking saga: State Attorney Dave Aronberg, who has been sued by the Palm Beach Post to release the grand jury records; Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, whose department’s favored treatment of Epstein while he was in the Palm Beach County jail is part of an ongoing state criminal investigation; and ex-State Attorney Barry Krischer, part of the same investigation in connection with his decision not to prosecute Epstein on child-sex charges.

What little is known was revealed recently in a draft of an environmental assessment produced for the Federal Aviation Administration. The study, which is necessary for Blue Origin to obtain federal permits to operate, turned up no significant obstacles to the spaceport.

 

"Blue Origin proposes to launch reusable launch vehicles on subortibal ballistic trajectories to altitudes in excess of 99,060 meters (325,000 feet)," reads the 229-page document posted on the FAA Web site.

 

That 60-mile altitude is roughly nine times the cruising altitude of a modern passenger jet. The moon, by comparison, is about 240,000 miles from Earth.

 

Plans call for the 50-foot-tall conical rockets, powered by hydrogen peroxide and kerosene, to make vertical landings at the West Texas site.

 

The document says Blue Origin hopes to begin test flights to altitudes of 2,000 feet later this year. By comparison, the Empire State Building in New York is 1,453 feet tall.

 

Over the next three years, Blue Origin plans to increase the rate of test flights to as many as 25 a year. Within four years, commercial manned flight could begin with as many as 52 launches in a year, according to the study.

 

At a public hearing attended by about 50 people last week in Van Horn, only three people signed up to speak and none had anything critical to say about the project. Nine of those present were journalists, and only about a third of the attendees were from Van Horn.

 

"Blue Origin is hoping to receive their experimental permits before the end of August, which would clear the way for test flights of prototype vehicles. At this point, the chances are good that their environmental review will be approved," said Doug Graham, an FAA environmental specialist who conducted the hearing.

The Florida Supreme Court on Thursday struck down an amendment that would ban the ownership of so-called β€œassault weapons” due to misleading wording.

 

Ban Assault Weapons Now, which prohibited the β€œpossession of assault weapons,” banned magazines holding more than 10 rounds and mandated registration for these guns, was set to appear on the 2020 ballot.

 

However, justices voted 4-1 to ensure this won’t happen, according to the Washington Examiner.

Justices called the initiative β€” born after the deadly Parkland, Florida, shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February of 2018 β€” β€œaffirmatively misleading,” as

it does β€œnot categorically exempt the assault weapon, only the current owner’s possession of that assault weapon,” according to court documents obtained by ABC News.

 

Justice Jorge Labarga was the sole voice of dissent in the ruling, saying that the 75-word limit on these initiatives is sufficient to comprehend the details of the bill.

 

β€œThe ballot title and summary provide fair notice and equip voters to educate themselves about the details of the Initiative,” Labarga wrote, according to ABC.

Wealthy celebrities like soccer star Megan Rapinoe, musicians John Legend and Lizzo, and left-wing activist and actress Jane Fonda have all signed an open letter demanding the β€œdivestment from police.”

The letter was posted on DefendingBlackLives.org and titled, β€œA Letter to Demand Divestment from Police and an Investment in Black Communities.”

According to Rolling Stone, β€œThe letter was released by activist Patrisse Cullors, a co-founder of Black Lives Matter and a founding member of the Movement 4 Black Lives, a coalition of more than 100 black-rights organizations.”

Black Lives Matter is a radical anti-cop activist group. Its members have chanted for dead officers, and a 2016 lawsuit from the father of a slain Dallas officer accused the activist group of inciting the β€œwar on police” that led to his son’s death.

β€œBlack communities across the nation are mourning the deaths of George Floyd, tortured to death by Minneapolis police, Ahmaud Arbery, a jogger who was killed while running in a residential neighborhood in Brunswick, Georgia, Breonna Taylor an EMT killed while asleep in her bed in Louisville, KY, Dreasjon Reed in Indianapolis and Tony McDade in Tallahassee,” the letter starts. β€œTheir names are added to a devastatingly long list of Black people who have been killed at the hands of vigilantes or law enforcement. Not to mention the others whose names we don’t yet know, and may never know since they were killed without a camera recording it.”

β€œThe COVID-19 deaths and the deaths caused by police terror are connected and consequential to each other. The United States does not have a national healthcare system,” the open letter continues, though many nations with nationalized health care faired far worse with COVID than the U.S.

β€œInstead, we have the largest military budget in the world, and some of the most well-funded and militarized police departments in the world, too. Policing and militarization overwhelmingly dominate the bulk of national and local budgets,” the letter states.

The activists then claim β€œBlack communities are living in persistent fear of being killed by state authorities like police, immigration agents or even white vigilantes who are emboldened by state actors.”

β€œDespite continued profiling, harassment, terror and killing of Black communities, local and federal decision-makers continue to invest in the police, which leaves Black people vulnerable and our communities no safer,” the letter states.

Instead, the activists argue, the money should β€œgo towards building healthy communities, to the health of our elders and children, to neighborhood infrastructure, to education, to childcare, to support a vibrant Black future.”

β€œWe join in solidarity with the freedom fighters in Minneapolis, Louisville, and across the United States,” the letter adds. β€œAnd we call for the end to police terror.”

The post ends by demanding local officials take a pledge to β€œVote no on all increases to police budgets,” β€œVote yes to decrease police spending and budgets,” and β€œVote yes to increase spending on health care, education and community programs that keep us safe.”

Last week, protests began popping up across the nation over the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a police officer had his knee on the 46-year-old’s neck for over eight minutes during an arrest, as shown in viral video footage.

Things quickly turned ugly, however, with arson, looting, and violence spiking in places like Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, New York City, Rochester, Richmond, and many other cities.

Since the incident, all four officers involved in the arrest have been fired, investigations from the FBI and state law enforcement have been opened, and, on Friday, the officer at the center of the incident was taken into custody. The other three officers have since been charged.

Uber said it will make changes to its ride-hailing app and Uber Eats delivery service to support black-owned businesses.

 

In an email to customers late Thursday, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said Uber Eats will promote black-owned restaurants on its app, and that the service will not charge delivery fees to those restaurants β€œfor the remainder of the year.”

 

Uber will also offer discounted rides to black-owned small businesses β€œwho have been hit hard by COVID-19,” though it did not add how much of a discount would be given.

 

β€œI wish that the lives of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless others weren’t so violently cut short,” the 51-year-old CEO wrote. β€œI wish that institutional racism, and the police violence it gives rise to, didn’t cause their deaths.”
