Last night, the House Armed Services Committee voted overwhelmingly in favor of an amendment — jointly sponsored by Democratic Congressman Jason Crow of Colorado and Congresswoman Cheney of Wyoming — prohibiting the expenditure of monies to reduce the number of U.S. troops deployed in Afghanistan below 8,000 without a series of conditions first being met.

The imposed conditions are by no means trivial: for these troop reductions from Afghanistan to be allowed, the Defense Department must be able to certify, among other things, that leaving Afghanistan “will not increase the risk for the expansion of existing or formation of new terrorist safe havens inside Afghanistan” and “will not compromise or otherwise negatively affect the ongoing United States counter terrorism mission against the Islamic State, al Qaeda, and associated forces.”

The Crow/Cheney amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) last night passed by a vote of 45-11. The NDAA was then unanimously approved by the Committee by a vote of 56-0. It authorizes $740.5 billion in military spending — roughly three times more than the world’s second-highest spender, China.

President Trump throughout the year has insisted that the Pentagon present plans for withdrawing all troops from Afghanistan prior to the end of 2020. Last week, reports indicated that “the Trump administration is close to finalizing a decision to withdraw more than 4,000 troops from Afghanistan by the fall.” Trump’s plan “would reduce the number of troops from 8,600 to 4,500 and would be the lowest number since the very earliest days of the war in Afghanistan, which began in 2001.” In February, Trump announced an agreement with the Taliban to end the war completely.

Shortly after those White House withdrawal plans were reported, anonymous intelligence officials leaked a series of claims to the New York Times regarding “bounties” allegedly being paid by Russia to Taliban fighters to kill U.S. troops. Those leaks emboldened opposition to troop withdrawal from Afghanistan on the ground that it would be capitulating to Russian treachery. It was that New York Times leak that Liz Cheney, along with GOP Congressman Mac Thornberry, cited in a joint statement on Monday to suggest troop withdrawal would be precipitous:

“After today’s briefing with senior White House officials, we remain concerned about Russian activity in Afghanistan, including reports that they have targeted U.S. forces. It has been clear for some time that Russia does not wish us well in Afghanistan. We believe it is important to vigorously pursue any information related to Russia or any other country targeting our forces. Congress has no more important obligation than providing for the security of our nation and ensuring our forces have the resources they need. We anticipate further briefings on this issue in the coming days.”

At Roger Stone’s sentencing, following his conviction by a jury in Washington, DC, that was led by an irretrievably politically biased foreperson, the presiding federal judge, Amy Berman Jackson, announced to her captive audience how fortunate we as a nation are that defendants like Roger Stone are sentenced by completely neutral judges like her.

Similarly, when Jackson denied Roger Stone’s request last week to extend his date to surrender to prison by 60 days based on his life-threatening medical conditions if exposed to the COVID-19 virus in the confines of a federal prison where it currently is running rampant, Judge Jackson assured the public that her “guiding principle” was that Mr. Stone should be given no more, nor less consideration than any other similarly situated defendant.

On Jan. 25, 2019 the FBI conducted an armed raid of Roger Stone’s home in Florida. It was during the predawn hours and 29 agents, to include the aquatic team, conducted the direct action raid on the elderly Stone and his deaf wife as if they were terrorists or drug cartel leaders. It appears that CNN was tipped off on the raid, arriving earlier than the FBI and capturing the armed agents taking Stone into custody.

Both of these remarks were as disingenous and as far removed from reality as one ever could imagine. Her bias and her total lack of even-handedness are by now undeniable and, indeed, we as a nation suffer when our criminal justice system is blatantly politicized by even a single judge.

Judge Jackson’s politically motivated comments at Mr. Stone’s sentencing are legendary and reflected anything but neutrality. She went through the motions of listening to Stone’s sentencing presentation, left the courtroom, and came back minutes later with pages of notes obviously written well in advance, that she simply read out loud, making a mockery of the idea that she was in any way a neutral arbiter actually considering facts and arguments made before her.

The jury and American public were told at the start of the prosecution against Roger Stone that the case was about his interference with an investigation into Russian collusion. You can imagine the surprise of many then, when Judge Jackson read from her notes at sentencing that the case against Roger Stone had nothing whatsoever to do with Russia. Instead, she read, it was about Stone’s efforts to obtain Hillary Clinton’s emails from Wikileaks as part of an opposition research move. Opposition research like what we now know the Clinton campaign and the DNC paid for to use against the Trump campaign.

No matter to this judge that Hillary Clinton was a client of Mr. Mueller’s law firm or even that the lead prosecutor in the Stone case was Ms. Clinton’s personal lawyer from that law firm in Clinton’s own email scandal.

A June 4 article by China Daily said there “is no legal basis” for faulting China for the spread of the virus.

“What we’ve done is strictly obey the international rules and fulfill our international obligations,” Huang Jin, a law professor specializing in international law at China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing falsely said in the propaganda article. “For example, we took the initiative to evaluate the pandemic situation and reported it in a timely fashion to the World Health Organization as well as other countries and regions, and we also accepted inspections from the WHO.”

Carlos Ghosn: Japan ask US to extradite ex-Green Beret and son over Japan escape

Japan has asked the US to extradite a former special forces soldier and his son for allegedly helping ex-Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn flee Japan last year. Ex-Green Beret Michael Taylor and his son Peter were held in Massachusetts in May, several months after Japan had issued warrants for their arrest.

The US authorities confirmed a formal extradition request was submitted.

Mr Ghosn, who was detained in Japan on financial misconduct charges in 2018, made a dramatic escape last year. The former Nissan boss denies the charges against him. Despite being under house arrest and monitored 24 hours a day, on 29 December he managed to fly to the Lebanese capital Beirut via Turkey. Details of the Taylors' alleged involvement in the escape are unclear. But Japanese prosecutors have said the two were in Japan at the time and helped Mr Ghosn evade security checks as he left. In May, prosecutors in Turkey charged seven people over the escape. The suspects - four pilots, two flight attendants, and an airline executive - are also accused of helping Mr Ghosn flee.

They go on trial in Istanbul on Friday, with Turkish prosecutors seeking up to eight years in jail for the four pilots and the airline executive. Full details of the escape have never been fully explained. Mr Ghosn, who holds Brazilian, French and Lebanese nationalities, ran Renault and Nissan as part of a three-way car alliance.

He is accused of misreporting his compensation package, but has insisted he can never get a fair hearing in Japan. Since his arrival in Lebanon, he has told reporters he was a "hostage" in Japan, where he was left with a choice between dying there or running.

Anon wonders if the Americas provided so many opportunities that the elites lost control of their ability to leverage poverty in order to maintain a source of indentured servants. Columbus sailed to the Americas in 1492. It wasn't until 1619 that 20 African slaves were brought to the Americas. Prior to 1619 it was indentured servants who did manuel labor. (Anon thinks that indentured servants were also enslaved.)

Were the Americas so rich in opportunities that people were able to free themselves from servitude? With the shortage of indentured servants, elites had to find another source of manual laborers. Surely, they couldn't be expected to do manual labor themselves.

Think about it. People left the old world to come to the new world for many reasons:

2. To escape indentured servitude

3. To escape a corrupt justice system

4. To seek new opportunities in the New World

5. The desire to follow their dreams

6. Some came as indentured servants and some came as slaves (Anon fails to understand the distinction between these 2 conditions) but the author of this History of Slavery made a distinction.

S-500 Will Be Capable of Destroying Hypersonic Weapons in Space, Russian Aerospace Forces Say

The S-500 Prometey ("Prometheus") is a cutting-edge surface-to-air defence missile system with a range of 400-600 kilometers (250-370 miles). Head engineer Pavel Sozinov announced earlier that it would be able to intercept targets hundred kilometres above the surface of the Earth.

The S-500 Prometey ("Prometheus") defence system will be capable of destroying hypersonic weapons in near-Earth space, according to a statement by Sergei Surovikin, commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

According to Surovikin, the S-500's technical features make the system a first generation space-defence network.

"The characteristics implemented in the S-500 air defence system make it possible for it to destroy, in addition to aerodynamic and ballistic targets, hypersonic weapons of all modifications, including in near space", he said.

Surovikin touted the defence system as currently having no analogue in the world.

The S-500 Prometey ("Prometheus"), also known as 55R6M "Triumfator-M", is a universal complex of long-range and high-altitude interception with increased missile defense potential. The weapon's main tasks will include combating medium-range ballistic missiles and intercontinental ballistic missiles if they are in close proximity.

The cutting-edge defence system was tested by the air defence troops in 2019, and 2021 is expected to be the year when the S-500 will be first deployed by the Russian armed forces, according to the Defence Ministry.

Jeffrey Epstein victims breathed a sigh of relief Thursday at the news that the convicted pedophile’s alleged madame Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested.

“For years, I feared Epstein and his ring. Maxwell was the center of that sex trafficking ring. Now that the ring has been taken down, I know that I can’t be hurt anymore,” said Jennifer Araoz, one of the women abused by the late billionaire.

Araoz is suing Epstein’s estate and Maxwell, alleging the hedge fund manager raped her during a massage at his townhouse when she was 15.

“Day after day, I have waited for the news that Maxwell would be arrested and held accountable for her actions,” she Araoz, who never met Maxwell. “Her arrest is a step in that direction, and it truly means that the justice system didn’t forget about us.”

Maxwell, 58, was busted Thursday at her New Hampshire home on a six-count Manhattan federal indictment charging her with grooming young girls for sex.

The British socialite was a one-time girlfriend of Epstein, who hanged himself in his jail cell in August weeks after he was nabbed on federal sex-trafficking charges.

Attorney Brad Edwards, who represents several Epstein victims, said his clients were overjoyed at learning of Maxwell’s arrest.

“I cannot overstate the excitement of my clients that this day has come nor their confidence in and appreciation for the SDNY United States Attorney’s Office,” said Edwards. “But they know there is a big difference between an arrest and a conviction.”

One of Edward’s clients, Courtney Wild, has alleged that she was 14 when Epstein hired her as a masseuse and paid her to lure her underage friends to his Palm Beach, Fla., compound.

Attorney Lisa Bloom, whose firm represents six Epstein accusers, lauded the arrest but said it wasn’t enough.

“Maxwell’s brutal, ruthless behavior caused my client tremendous pain,” she said in a statement. “All others accused of enabling Jeffrey Epstein’s predations must immediately be brought to justice as well.”

Victim Virginia Giuffre’s attorney, Sigrid McCawley, celebrated Maxwell’s arrest and called her a “sexual predator who not only engaged in sexual abuse herself but also assisted Jeffrey Epstein for decades in running his sexual trafficking scheme.”

The attorney added, “Today is also a powerful message to all Epstein accomplices that justice will prevail.”

Giuffre has long called for Maxwell’s arrest and once said in a BBC interview that she “should be rotting in jail for her atrocities.”

The former Epstein sex slave said it was Maxwell who demanded she have sex with Prince Andrew in London in 2001 — one of three times she said she was forced to sleep with the Duke of York.

“Ghislaine tells me that I have to do for Andrew what I do for Jeffrey — and that just made me sick,” she told the network.
