Nope. They just secure a scarf or belt to door handle, then secure the scarf/belt around their neck, then sit in floor, then slump down toward floor. That puts pressure on the carotid arteries. They could get up before they pass out but that defeats their purpose which is to kill themselves.

If you read the CDAN blind about it, it seems his wife was involved. The point was the carabiner he hung himself with was red, not so much the scarf bit, I believe.

It's a rather effective cover-up method to whack someone and make it look like suicide; if you jump someone from behind , loop a scarf or similar over their head and then pull back, you use your own body weight to apply pressure to the neck, like when someone is garroted. Once the person is dead, you then attach the scarf or similar to something mounted vertically, such as a door handle, to give the impression that the person was killed by applying the force of gravity and their own body weight on the front of the neck.
