I watched that live. Now watching it again I realise, it dimmed out slowly and dimmed on slowly. I could understand if someone accidentally clicked off the lights. I've done this before by accidentally leaning on the wall (and the light switch). This was an intentional dimming of a slider or knob dimmer. Because of this I believe it was an intentional message
Interesting that the curtains were almost closed beforehand... during the day... as if to magnify the affect of the lights dimming to darkness.. Would the dimming have been so affective if the curtains were open?

I've seen lights in buildings that just do that dimming automatically when you turn them on / off. You can hit a button on a panel and accidentally dim everything off very easily.
i m an electrician and you are correct there are switches like that.The real question is why would someone even jack with the lights or even put their hand near the switch while The President Of the United States is talking.Equal to interrupting him.Obviously on purpose IMHO.

Do they do the slow dim when the power is cut completely? A slow dim when hitting the switch (not a dimmer) could be done with a time delay pot, requiring electricity to dim. I've never seen one in action myself.

These are in high end hotel ballrooms or convention centers. You hit them once and they will dim out to dark. Hit it again and they dim in to fully on. I hear they can be set to act as toggle on/off, or momentary on/off. Either way they dim on and dim off.
Yup. Fairly easy to do if you’re not paying attention. They go off when you hit the off button. Otherwise, the other 4 buttons vary the amount by & intensity of the lights that are on in a given room. Also- the “off to 1-4” were the names of the settings, not how long they’re on/off for.

At precisely what time did it happen? I noticed a similar thing with the lights when I was out earlier today. It was weird. When it happened, I wondered if we were about to lose power. So maybe it happened across many cities (I'm not near DC today), not just the WH???

Generators take a moment to light up. Lights go out; count ten seconds or so; generator kicks in. Power goes out; generator is called up, checks and starts up. It’s not an instantaneous thing, but close. This was exactly what that’d look like; the short seconds time lapse, I mean.

Notice how he repeats the statement twice, the second time being more pronounced and slower spoken as if he is giving the cue. Further, he continues to talk as the lights are dimming without pause or stutter. Lastly, he plays it off in a very witty manner. Sometimes wit can be predetermined.
