George Soros & Bill Gates lead buyout of UK Covid testing company

A group of investors led by the Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have financed the buyout of UK diagnostic technologies firm Mologic, which has developed a 10-minute coronavirus test.

To make the acquisition, the group has launched Global Access Health (GAH), a social enterprise aiming to expand access to affordable medical technology. The members of the GAH are reportedly set on investing over $41 billion in the acquisition deal. The transaction will include the buyout of all Mologic’s existing shares, including those held by two private investment managers, Foresight Group LLP and Calculus Capital.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has painfully demonstrated the fundamental inequities in global public health, and in particular the crucial importance of access to […] life-saving diagnostic tools. In this unique transaction, philanthropic funds and investors are working together […] to address at least one part of that failure by enabling a cutting-edge commercial business to focus all its resources on solving one of the world’s most pressing public health issues,” Sean Hinton, SEDF’s chief executive officer, has said, commenting on the deal.

Mologic was founded in 2003 by Mark Davis and his father Professor Paul Davis, one of the creators of the world's first home pregnancy test, ClearBlue. Mologic develops tests for a variety of diseases at affordable prices and recently received a CE mark (Conformité Européenne) for its coronavirus disease Covid-19 tests, which the company plans to sell at just $1 each.

However, the Covid-19 test has yet to be approved for use in both the UK and the US. Mologic recently received £1 million ($1.4 million) from the UK authorities for its Covid-19 tests development, but later accused the government of “stonewalling” the usage of the tests within the country.

Biden: White House doing 'everything we can' to combat inflation

President Biden said Monday that Congress needs to pass his sweeping economic agenda in order to tamp down rising inflation amid concerns that another burst of government spending will act as an accelerant to already rapidly rising consumer prices. "As our economy has come roaring back, we've seen some price increases," the president said, speaking from the White House. "Some folks have raised worries that could be a sign of persistent inflation. But that's not our view." Biden said that his administration was doing "everything we can" to address the higher-than-expected inflation, but he pushed back against fears of persistent inflation and maintained his stance the recent surge in consumer prices is temporary.

"Look, we brought this economy back from the brink. There are going to be ups and downs," he said. "Reality is you can't flip the global economic light back on and not expect this to happen. As demand returns, there's going to be global supply chain challenges." The government reported last week that prices for goods and services jumped by the most in 13 years, fueling concerns that a rapidly rebounding economy could lead to runaway growth. The Labor Department said in its monthly report that consumer prices rose 0.9% from May and 5.4% over the past year.

Excluding volatile oil and gas prices, so-called core inflation jumped 4.5% over the past year, the largest increase since November 1991. Republicans have latched onto the inflation issues, blaming the $1.9 trillion stimulus bill that Democrats passed without any GOP votes in March for the price spike and attacking Biden for moving forward with another $4 trillion in new spending. Biden's comments come as Democrats begin to make headway on their two-pronged economic plans: A bipartisan infrastructure bill that includes more than $500 billion in new spending and a $3.5 trillion spending plan that would dramatically expand the government-funded safety net.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer set a Wednesday deadline for a procedural vote to begin debate on the bipartisan infrastructure bill, as Democrats simultaneously work out the details of a separate bill that would invest trillions in child care, education and support for families. Biden claimed the government investments would curtail rising inflation – rather than inflame it.

Japanese health ministry panel backs lowering Moderna age limit to 12

A health ministry panel on Monday backed Moderna Inc.’s COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use in around 4 million children age 12 to 17, paving the way for final approval by the ministry in the coming days.

The panel recommended lowering the current age restriction of 18 years of age and older without conducting an additional clinical trial in the country. Pfizer Inc.’s vaccine has already been authorized for emergency use in children 12 and older since June 1. Moderna last month asked regulators in Japan, the U.S. and other nations to lower the minimum age for the vaccine to 12 from 18 after Moderna’s late stage clinical trial involving 3,732 adolescents showed in May that the jab was 100% effective starting 14 days after the second dose and “well tolerated” with no significant safety concerns identified. The European Union drug regulator is also expected to recommend that the shot be used in children as young as 12 this week, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not lowered the age limit from 18 yet.

The approval would mark a step forward in Japan’s fight against the coronavirus, as this would give adolescents two options for vaccination, said Dr. Hiroyuki Moriuchi, professor of pediatrics at Nagasaki University. “By making it possible to use both the vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna, it will become easier to vaccinate children with existing chronic diseases, which is a good thing,” he said. But Moriuchi said healthy children should not rush to get the vaccine yet. Except for high-risk children who are more likely to have severe coronavirus symptoms, healthy children should be the very last in the order of the vaccination campaign, as it makes more sense to vaccinate other age groups as a priority given the vast number of infections in children come from transmission from adults, he said.

He added that British data has shown that only two children have died of COVID-19 out of 1 million cases, and that no children have died yet in Japan, where the number of infections is much lower than that of the U.K. The Japan Pediatric Society has said that vaccinating healthy children is an important step but added that it should be taken carefully. The education and health ministries have sent a notice to municipalities saying that the government does not recommend mass vaccinations at schools, due to a difficulty in adequately explaining the vaccines to parents and a tendency for children to face peer pressure over getting a shot. It’s important that each child and parent understand the risks and benefits, experts say.

The health ministry says that minors age 16 and older can receive the vaccine without parental consent, but that children age 15 and younger are required to have a parental signature to get a shot.

Audit Organizers In Arizona Push For Senate To Issue A Warrant For The Evidence Maricopa County Is Withholding "I'm Talking About A Warrant"

Patriot audit organizers in Arizona tell NATIONAL FILE that they are fighting to get a Senate warrant for the materials that Maricopa County has withheld from the Cyber Ninjas audit team. The Arizona Senate Republicans seem poised to either re-request the subpoenaed materials from Maricopa County or issue a new round of subpoenas. But patriot organizers have a plan to get a warrant for the evidence without going through the courts. The patriots maintain that the Arizona Senate is perfectly capable of issuing warrants.

“They haven’t gotten all the items on the subpoena,” Josh Barnett told NATIONAL FILE. Barnett is an activist who was part of the original team that drove the affidavit effort to get the Maricopa County audit, which is now being overseen by the Arizona Senate Republicans. “But I’m not talking about a subpoena. I’m talking about a warrant.”

“To get a warrant, we need a written report from the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Senator Warren Petersen, signed off on by Senate President Fann. Then we can send a Sergeant at Arms to go pick this stuff up. We don’t need courts involved. I told Warren this,” Barnett said, referring to Judiciary chairman Sen. Warren Petersen. “I have spoken about this with senators” and numerous lawmakers agree with the tactic, Barnett said. “They do NOT need to vote on it. The Senate Judiciary Committee chairman can issue the written report himself.” Barnett said that Arizona governmental super-lawyer Alex Kolodin confirmed that this tactic is proper and legitimate.

The most recent available version of the Arizona Senate Rules, Rule 2D, states that “The President shall sign all acts, addresses, joint resolutions, writs, warrants and subpoenas issued by the order of the Senate, and decide all questions of order, subject to an appeal by any member, on which appeal no member shall speak more than once, unless by permission of the Senate.” In this case the president of the Senate would be Karen Fann, the Republican overseeing the Maricopa County audit.

The Mason’s Manual of Legislative Procedure, which is recognized by the Arizona legislature as “a procedural and parliamentary manual that supplements the Constitution, statutes and House and Senate Rules,” acknowledges that a Senate committee can issue a warrant. The Mason’s Manual states: “No affidavit charging contempt need be filed before a house to authorize it to issue its warrant to arrest a contumacious person who refuses to testify before one of its committees. The written report of the committee is sufficient authority for the issuance of the warrant.”

Cyber Ninjas CEO Doug Logan stated that the standard of verification for mail-in ballots dropped considerably as the volume of the ballots increased. “We’ve had an affidavit that specifically stated that when mail-in ballots were received, that so many of them were received that the standard was reduced over time. They originally talked about, there was originally 20 points of comparison on the signature and then after some time they were told to go to ten points of comparison, then five. And then eventually they were just told to let every single mail-in ballot through,” Doug Logan stated, noting that Maricopa County is withholding mail-in ballot images that can be used as evidence. Former Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett recommended re-subpoenaing those images.

The White House is considering “all available avenues” to transfer prisoners and close the Guantanamo Bay military base in Cuba, press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Monday.

“Our goal is to close Guantanamo Bay,” Psaki said at a briefing. “I don’t have a timeline for you. As you know, there’s a process, there are different layers of the process, but that remains our goal and we are considering all available avenues to responsibly transfer detainees and of course close Guantanamo Bay.”

Her comments came the same day that the Biden administration announced its first transfer of a detainee from the military prison, whittling the number of remaining prisoners down to 39.

U.S. officials announced Monday that Abdul Latif Nasir, 56, would be repatriated to Morocco. The Periodic Review Board decided in 2016 that Nasir’s detention was no longer necessary to protect U.S. national security. Psaki noted Monday that Nasir started moving through the process under the Obama administration but that his case was paused under former President Trump, who was determined to keep the prison open.

Of the 39 remaining detainees, 10 are eligible for transfer, 17 are eligible for a Periodic Review Board, 10 are involved in the military commissions process, and two have been convicted, Psaki noted.

A senior official told reporters earlier Monday that the Biden administration is “very much focused on looking to pursue transfer” for those who are eligible for transfer, without providing further specifics on the steps officials are taking or the timeline.

The Biden administration launched a review of Gitmo in February shortly after President Biden took office with the intention of closing the prison by the time Biden leaves office.

The prison was opened during the administration of President George W. Bush after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and used to hold foreign terror suspects. The prison held about 800 prisoners at the peak of the prison population. Former President Obama sought to close the prison during his two terms, but faced opposition from Republicans and was blocked from doing so by Congress.

Psaki noted on Monday that Biden cannot order the prison closed on his own and that it requires notifications and consultations with Congress. She twice declined to lay out a specific timeline.

“I don’t have a new deadline to outline for you here today,” Psaki said.
