Karen Bassโ€™s Campaign Gave Nearly $100K To Nonprofit She Co-Founded Which Paid Her $70K+ For โ€˜Consultingโ€™

 

Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) nearly doubled her income in 2010 from consulting fees she received from a nonprofit she co-founded, and Bassโ€™s re-election campaign donated nearly $100,000 to that nonprofit between 2008 and 2011, the Los Angeles Times reports.

 

Bass, a vice presidential contender on Democratic presumptive nominee Joe Bidenโ€™s VP shortlist, co-founded a South Los Angeles-based nonprofit called the Community Coalition in 1990. Her community organizing with the Coalition laid the groundwork for her successful run for the California State Assembly in 2004, where she would eventually rise to the position of Speaker in 2008.

 

 

A Los Angeles Times review of Bassโ€™s financial disclosures found that her State Assembly campaign committees paid the Community Coalition nearly $100,000 between 2008 and 2011. And in 2010, the Community Coalition paid Bass a total of $70,500 in consulting fees, an amount that nearly doubled her State Assembly salary that year.

 

Financial disclosures show that Bassโ€™s campaign made two major donations to the nonprofit organization that she co-founded.

 

The first was for $47,000 given between late 2008 (the year Bass became Speaker of the California Assembly) and 2009.

Another Reddit source used for the article said Snyder was considering renaming the Redskins "The Washington Epsteins."

Court documents by Snyder's legal team say the article was aggregated in "at least 22 stories which have generated over 160 million impressions."

Snyder called the allegations "utterly untrue" with no "legitimate journalistic basis whatsoever."

MEAWW has since taken down the stories.

An Air India Express passenger flight en route from Dubai with 191 people on board has overshot the runway during landing at Kerala's Kozhikode airport. Police confirmed 14 deaths with another 123 injured.

 

Malappuram police superintendent Abdul Kareem confirmed the numbers to the ANI news agency. Fifteen people are said to be "seriously" injured.

 

Officials also confirmed that both the pilot and co-pilot perished in the crash landing.

 

Media reports said the plane overshot the runway, fell into a valley and broke up.

 

Images and video circulating on social media show the aircraft broken into two pieces with rescue operations underway.

 

Local reports said that the aircraft did not catch fire and that passengers were being evacuated.

 

The disaster happened at around 7PM local time amid heavy rainfall in the area.

 

The Blood Donors India volunteer group has issued an urgent plea for people to come forward to donate blood at two hospitals in the city of Kozhikode.

 

The flight was part of the 'Vande Bharat' government-run program to bring back Indians stranded in foreign countries amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

India's Interior Minister Amit Shah wrote on social media that he was โ€œdistressedโ€ by the incident at Kozhikode, and has directed the National Disaster Response Force to assist the rescue efforts.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, wishing a speedy recovery for those injured.

Lebanonโ€™s president has not ruled out the possibility that a series of powerful explosions in the Port of Beirut were caused by a rocket or bomb. The authorities previously stated that the ammonium nitrate stash had detonated.

 

โ€œThe cause has not been determined yet. There is a possibility of external interference through a rocket or bomb or other act," Aoun said, as cited by local media.

 

Aoun said that the probe into the blast will check whether it was caused by โ€œnegligence or an accident,โ€ or some type of external force.

 

The president promised that everyone responsible for the explosions will be held accountable.

Ready for the truth? Can you handle the truth? Let me give you the report for Sarasota and Manatee counties. This is the metro area that encompasses Sarasota and Bradenton. This is the fastest growing area in all of Florida. What is actually happening in terms of Covid should shock you.

 

Florida is home to 21,933,000 people (see here). How many have succumbed to Covid since March 6, when Floridaโ€™s Government started keeping tabs on the disease? 7,084. That means 0.032% of the population have died from Covid in the last six months. To put this into perspective, the CDC reports for 2017 that 46,044 Floridians died from heart disease. I do not recall nightly news broadcasts wailing hysterically about fat Floridians eating double cheeseburgers and clogging their arteries. But less than 8,000 deaths in six months and we are supposed to put on masks and hide in our closets? Nonsense.

 

Letโ€™s take a closer look at Sarasota County over the last 30 days. According to the US Census, Sarasota County was inhabited by 433,742 souls as of July 1, 2019. Here are the numbers according to the Florida Covid 19 โ€œDashboard.โ€ Just follow this link and click on Sarasota County. Five thousand nine hundred seventy four Sarasotans tested positive since the first of July (July 7 to be precise). That is 1.3% of the total county population. Hospitalized? 360, which represents 0.08%. How about deaths? 160. That is roughly consistent with the number of deaths recorded state-wideโ€“0.036%.

 

What about neighboring Manatee County (seat of the city of Bradenton and winter home of the Pittsburgh Pirates)? Manatee has a slightly smaller population than Sarsota, weighing in with 413,655 happy inhabitants. Eight thousand nine hundred fifty six Manatee maniacs tested positive for Covidโ€“i.e., 2.1%. More have been hospitalizedโ€“589, which represents 0.14%. The death count is 189 or 0.045%.

 

Ever hear of the concept of โ€œperspective?โ€ I am sure that the families of those whose kith and kin perished from Covid and/or co-morbidities exacerbated by Covid donโ€™t care a whit about the stats. But the truth is the disease is not spreading like wildfire. People are not flooding the hospitals. Just look at todayโ€™s stats for the major medical center in the region:

Yes, Covid is a disease and a very small percentage of the population will die if they contract it. But it is not a health crisis that requires shutting down businesses and forcing kids to stay away from school. State Department: We're responsible for Russian, Iranian text message campaign

 

(Reuters) - The U.S. State Department said on Friday that it was responsible for a text message campaign that left a trail of confusion and ridicule across Russia and Iran.

 

In an email, a spokesperson for the department said the unsolicited text messages - which promoted a multimillion dollar bounty for information about cyber threats to the upcoming U.S. election - were aimed at building awareness internationally.

 

โ€œThis is a worldwide campaign in multiple languages,โ€ the email said.

 

The departmentโ€™s comments came after an unknown number of people in Russia and Iran began receiving the text messages and posting screenshots to social media.

 

The campaign may have helped U.S. authorities get the word out about their reward, but Reuters spoke to five Iranian users who said they found the messages either bewildering or humorous.

 

Sadra Momeni, a developer who works out of the Iranian city of Qom, compared the texts to propaganda leaflets dumped out of the back of an aircraft. He said he initially thought the message was a scam; it was only when he opened the link that he realized that the United States was genuinely soliciting tips about election hacking via text message.

Manhattan suffers MASSIVE power outage, huge portions of NYC plunged into darkness

 

A massive power outage early Friday morning left a large portions of Manhattan in the dark. According to local media, the electricity came back up for most of the area after half-an-hour.

 

The outage comes shortly after tropical storm Isais battered the US East Coast, wreaking havoc in its path and cutting power to at least 1.3 million customers.

 

The Manhattan blackout affected the Upper West Side, Harlem and Upper East Side neighborhoods, according to Con Edisonโ€™s outage map. The provider said at least 119,039 customers were left without power, including some who lost it earlier due to the storm.

 

The New York subway was also affected by the blackout, with the Metropolitan Transit Authority advising people travelling between Brooklyn and Manhattan to expect longer waiting times and possible delays.

 

Category 1 hurricane Isais battered the East Coast starting Monday, shortly after making landfall in North Carolina. It caused widespread destruction and claimed several lives before moving towards Canada on Wednesday and dissipating. More than 2 million people were left without power by the stormโ€™s passage.

Dick, 54, said the punch by David Hale, 47, caused โ€œserious, permanent and disabling injuries.โ€ He seeks compensation for medical expenses and lost wages, among other damages.

โ€œThe entire suit is ridiculous,โ€ Haleโ€™s attorney, Michael Kennedy, said in an emailed statement Friday to The Associated Press. Kennedy, who has denied wrongdoing by Hale, said it was โ€œappallingโ€ that Dick would seek lost wages during a pandemic.

Hale has maintained that Dick provoked him into hitting him by grabbing Haleโ€™s genitals and winking at him outside the club where Dick had performed. Dick has denied he touched Hale.

On July 28, the New Orleans district attorneyโ€™s office said it was dropping prosecution of Hale because Dick had not been cooperative and had not kept in touch with prosecutors.

A district attorney spokesman, Ken Daley, said the case could be revived if Dick reestablishes contact with the district attorneyโ€™s office. Dick later said he would be willing to come to New Orleans to testify against Hale.

UK govt under fire for buying 50 MILLION unusable masks from โ€˜investment firmโ€™ with no history of supplying protective gear

 

The UK government has determined that 50 million face masks it bought are not safe for NHS staff to use, a new lawsuit reveals. Court documents allege that the gear was purchased from a firm with no experience in dealing with PPE.

 

The Chinese-made FFP2 respirator masks were procured by the UK government from a London-based firm named Ayanda Capital as part of a ยฃ252-million ($331.5mn) contract signed in late April. However, the protective gear, intended for NHS staff, will now not be used because it had ear straps, rather than head straps, which means the masks may not fit tight enough around the face, UK media reported, citing court documents.

 

The Good Law Project, an NGO requesting a judicial review of the mask procurement process, argues that Ayanda Capital โ€œhas never before engaged in the business of sourcing or supplying PPE.โ€ A report by the Times described the company as โ€œobscure.โ€ Ayandaโ€™s own website says it focuses on currency trading, asset management, private equity and trade financing.

 

According to the documents cited by the media, the British government said that the deal with Ayanda was suggested by businessman Andrew Mills, an adviser to the UK Board of Trade and simultaneously a Senior Board Adviser to Ayanda.

 

Mills told the BBC that his position with the firm had played no part in awarding the contract. Ayanda insisted that its masks went through โ€œa rigorous assurance programโ€ and met all the requirements available online on the governmentโ€™s portal. It also said that officials did not reject the supplied gear.

 

The government, for its part, said that there is โ€œa robust process in place to ensure orders are of high quality and meet strict safety standards, with the necessary due diligence undertaken on all government contracts.โ€

 

Meanwhile, 150 million masks of another type supplied by Ayanda are currently being tested.

 

The case casts a shadow on a Tory government already facing harsh criticism from the opposition for its handling of the Covid-19 outbreak. Last month, the Labour Party requested the National Audit Office probe the mask procurement. On Thursday, Labour MP Rachel Reeves tweeted that โ€œthe latest PPE scandal cannot be swept under the carpet,โ€ and โ€œthese mistakes can never happen again.โ€

 

The UK government has been struggling to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus in recent weeks, and last week Prime Minister Boris Johnson postponed the next planned stage of easing the lockdown.

Report: 100 Children Shot in Democrat-Controlled Philly in 2020

 

One hundred children have reportedly been shot in Democrat-controlled Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to this point in 2020 alone.

 

CBS3 reports the shootings have resulted in numerous injuries to children, as well as death.

 

As recently as Saturday, seven-year-old Zamar Jones was shot to death in an incident involving three suspects. And on Wednesday night a six-year-old girl in West Philadelphia was shot in the chest while โ€œplaying outside with friends.โ€ She remains in hospital.

 

Philadelphia Police First Deputy Commissioner Melvin Singleton commented on having so many children shot this year, bemoaning โ€œthis culture of violence where we have adults are willing to shoot indiscriminately into crowds of people without care or concern for women or children.โ€

 

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on the shootings as well, noting 98 โ€œjuvenilesโ€ had been shot in the city by August 2, 2020, compared to 59 shot during the same time period in 2019.

 

Children in other Democrat-controlled cities, like Chicago and New York, have also seen their lives cut short by surging gun violence.

 

On July 28, 2020, Breitbart News reported that an infant was in critical condition after being shot in Mayor Lori Lightfootโ€™s (D) Chicago. Fox News reported that the 10-month old was wounded in a shooting that occurred around 11:15 a.m. on the Bishop Ford Expressway, where the infant and her 17-year-old mother were riding in a car driven by the motherโ€™s 21-year-old boyfriend.

 

On July 13, 2020, Breitbart News reported a one-year-old in a stroller was shot to death in Mayor Bill de Blasioโ€™s (D) New York City.

 

On July 16, 2020, Breitbart New reported President Trumpโ€™s observation Democrat-run cities are โ€œlike war-zones.โ€

Judge bans lawyers from identifying Epstein abuse victims

The judge presiding over the criminal case against a British socialite charged with recruiting teenage girls for financier Jeffrey Epstein to sexually abuse said Friday that her attorneys are not permitted to publicly identify accusers even if they've spoken in a public forum.

 

"Not all accusations or public statements are equal," US District Judge Alison J. Nathan wrote in her ruling in the case facing Ghislaine Maxwell.

 

"Deciding to participate in or contribute to a criminal investigation or prosecution is a far different matter than simply making a public statement 'relating to' Ms. Maxwell or Jeffrey Epstein, particularly since such a statement might have occurred decades ago and have no relevance to the charges in this case."

 

Excerpts that I have found to be true statements:

-Giuffre claimed in the suit and other litigation that Maxwell recruited her in2000to be a sexual servant to Epstein. She said the couple subsequently pressured her into having sex with numerous rich or notable men, including Britain's Prince Andrew, US politicians, wealthy entrepreneurs, a famous scientist and fashion designer.

 

-Among the newly released documents were emails Maxwell and Epstein exchanged in January 2015, when Giuffre's allegations were getting a new round of media attention.

 

-One email, sent from Epstein's email address but written in Maxwell's voice, appeared to be a draft statement or set of talking points for Maxwell to use in defending herself. It said she had been the target of "false allegations of impropriety and offensive behaviour that I abhor and have never ever been party to."

Responding to a Maxwell email a few days later, Epstein wrote: "You have done nothing wrong and I (would) urge you to start acting like it." He suggested she go outside and hold her head high, "not as an (escaping) convict."

 

-Many of the documents unsealed by the court Thursday had been available publicly before.

They included a deposition in which Giuffre described the alleged abuse, and also answered questions abouterrors she'd madepreviously in telling her story, includingoriginally telling a court she was 15when she met Epstein, when records showed she wasat leasta year older.

 

-Giuffre over the years has told her story to the FBI, but no charges were brought based on her allegations and she is not one of the three alleged victims in the current criminal case against Maxwell.

I voted early in Georgia for our run-off that happens on Aug 11 - Tues.

I am working the polls in my county as is a family member in metro Atlanta.

 

We have both discussed the 'paper weight' at length.

Whatever "paper" Georgia is using - it is heavier than normal copy paper, more akin to a cardstock, but not a heavy cardstock.

Was advised they needed the weight so it would scan and drop down into the container.

Chinese Drones Now Deployed In Balkans After Serbia Deal - NATO On Edge

 

China has delivered six military drones to Serbia after the Balkan country moved to purchase them in a controversial deal a year ago which has put NATO on edge.

 

Though Serbia has an official policy of military neutrality vis-a-vis NATO, there's been increased cooperation over the past few years. However, both the Chinese drone acquirement and Present's Aleksandar Vucic recently signaling he'd like to acquire the S-400 anti-air defense system from Russia has caused Washington to threaten sanctions.

 

The delivery makes Serbia the first European country in history to deploy Chinese combat drones and thus is raising eyebrows in Brussels, as Bloomberg underscores:

 

Chinaโ€™s actions are prodding the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to pivot to Asia, a potential sea change thatโ€™s roiling an alliance that was created to protect Europe against the Soviet Union and then Russia. Chinaโ€™s growing influence in the Balkans mirrors its push into other areas previously dominated by Russia. The Belt and Road enterprise already has made it a major player in Central Asian politics.

 

President Vucic said of the drones during a photo op after Belgrade took delivery: โ€œThey have a long range, they can shoot at targets from a distance of nine kilometers and record the terrain, objects of interest to Serbia deep within enemy territory,โ€ according to Bloomberg.

 

The sale, as one US military magazine previously put it, "marks Beijing's most significant foray into a continent where armed forces have traditionally relied on US and European weapon-makers."

California pastor, 40, is arrested after woman who attended his church claims he sexually abused her for six years from the age of 12, prompting more women to come forward

 

A pastor in LA's Hacienda Heights has been arrested on suspicion of child abuse after a woman claimed she was sexually assaulted by the church leader when she was a child.

The allegation came in to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department (LASD) on January 9 and the victim said she and her family were members of what was known as Home of Christians Eastern Los Angeles Church at the time.

 

The anonymous accuser told police that Jonathan Tsai, now 40, regularly visited her home because his family became close to her relatives.

 

She alleges the abuse lasted six years from when she was 12 until she was 18 years old.

Tsai was a youth pastor at the time.

 

The LASD say it has identified two other women who have reported similar claims of sexual assault by the suspect when they too were minors.

 

Incidents stem back to the year 2000 according to prosecutors. Tsai would have been 20 years old at the time.

 

Tsai is currently Head Pastor at the church which is now named Abundant Life Ministries.

The website for the church displayed a message that it was undergoing maintenance on Thursday.

 

The place of worship has a largely Mandarin Chinese congregation.

 

He was arrested at his home on July 21 and was held at Walnut Station on a bail amount of $1.4million. However he was released three days later on July 24.

Surely, the Republican members of the committee would ask him why all the websites in their ideological camp had suddenly disappeared from Google, and whether this suggested a deliberate attempt by the Monopoly of Mountain View to bias its six billion daily searches against their side of the aisle, which might have a political impact millions of times greater than the alleged โ€œRussiaGate manipulationโ€ that had so dominated our national headlines for many months.

Preliminary Injunction Sought to Release Hydroxychloroquine to the Public

 

Today the Association of American Physicians & Surgeons filed its motion for a preliminary injunction to compel release to the public of hydroxychloroquine by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), in AAPS v. HHS, No. 1:20-cv-00493-RJJ-SJB (W.D. Mich.). Nearly 100 million doses of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) were donated to these agencies, and yet they have not released virtually any of it to the public.

 

Millions of Americans fear attending political gatherings, religious services, and even large family get-togethers without the availability of early treatment if they were to contract COVID-19. Why should Americans have to wait until they or a loved one is on a ventilator before they gain access to medication to overcome this virus?

 

โ€œWhy does the government continue to withhold more than 60 million doses of HCQ from the public?โ€ asks Jane Orient, M.D., the Executive Director of AAPS. โ€œThis potentially life-saving medication is wasting away in government warehouses while Americans are dying from COVID-19.โ€

 

Today AAPS files its motion for a preliminary injunction to compel the government to release HCQ from its stockpile to the public, which could then immediately benefit from it. Reports of an uptick in COVID-19 in Arizona and elsewhere could then be handled without irrational, unjustified limitations on this medication imposed by the FDA.

 

AAPS agrees with President Trumpโ€™s adviser Peter Navarro, Ph.D., who decries the obstruction by officials within the FDA to making this medication available to the public. President Trump himself has successfully taken this medication as a preventative measure, so why canโ€™t ordinary Americans?

 

โ€œA perfect storm of politics in this presidential election year, along with conflicts of interest at the Defendant federal agencies, has resulted in unjustified obstacles to access to HCQ, an inexpensive medication having a track record of more than 75 years of safety,โ€ AAPS writes in its brief being filed today in federal court.

 

AAPS files with the court a chart showing how countries that encourage HCQ use, such as South Korea, India, Turkey, Russia, and Israel, have been far more successful in combatting COVID-19 than countries that have banned or discouraged early HCQ use, as the FDA has. Last week the FDA even misled the public by falsely stating that HCQ should not be used to treat COVID-19, when multiple studies show its benefits, and thousands of patients have been successfully treated worldwide.

 

โ€œThe interference with public access to hydroxychloroquine is disrupting our political processes,โ€ notes AAPS General Counsel Andrew Schlafly. โ€œPerhaps that is what some want, in order to deter Americans from attending political conventions and even voting, but it is unconstitutional for the FDA to infringe on these constitutional rights by blocking access to this safe medication.โ€

The former national security adviser and United Nations ambassador for President Obama exercised roughly a quarter of the more than 5,200 options she held as of this week, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing dated Thursday.

 

Mr. Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, is expected to announce his running mate next week. Ms. Rice is viewed as a strong contender because she worked closely with him when he was vice president and he is known to value personal relationships.

 

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week that Ms. Rice held the options in an article about her having more experience in corporate America than any of the other women Mr. Biden is believed to be considering.

 

At her sale price of $508.68 per share, Ms. Rice netted about $305,000 after accounting for the various strike prices associated with the options awarded to her as compensation.

 

"Ambassador Rice's sale of a fraction of her Netflix ( NFLX) stock has nothing to do with V.P. speculation," Erin Pelton, Ms. Rice's spokeswoman, said in a statement. "She filed a stock plan pursuant to SEC regulations over three months ago."
