By the morning of 22 December, the rebellion had already spread to all major cities across the country. The soldiers agreed to this and began to tie their hands behind their back which the Ceauศ™escus protested again but were powerless to prevent.

The Ceauศ™escus were executed by a gathering of soldiers: Captain Ionel Boeru, Sergeant-Major Georghin Octavian and Dorin-Marian Cรฎrlan, while reportedly hundreds of others also volunteered. The firing squad began shooting as soon as the two were in position against a wall. A TV crew who were to film the execution only managed to catch the end of it as the Ceauศ™escus lay on the ground shrouded by dust kicked up by the bullets striking the wall and ground. A paedophile former University of Cambridge research fellow who sent ex-prime minister Theresa May a hoax package containing a white powder, intended to appear as poison, has been jailed.

 

On April 5th, 2018, staff at a postal sorting office in East London alerted police after handling a suspicious package addressed to โ€œTheresa May, c/o The Nazi Partyโ€. It was found to contain a graphic cartoon of the decapitated prime minister, as well as white powder later found to be harmless.

 

The incident occurred just one month after the poisoning of former Russian spy and double agent for the British, Sergei Skripal, and his daughter Yulia with the nerve agent Novichok. A policeman was also taken ill after coming into contact with the stricken pair as they sat on a bench in Salisbury city centre. Then-Prime Minister May had said that it was highly likely that Russian President Vladimir Putin was behind the attack on British soil.

 

The package also included a picture of Russian ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko, according to the BBC. Litvinenko had been poisoned with radioactive polonium 210 in London in 2006. The attack was suspected of having been at the behest of Putin.

 

Following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police Forceโ€™s Counter-Terrorism Command, detectives arrested 54-year-old Christopher Doyle at his home in Widnes, Cheshire, on May 24th, 2018, according to a statement by Scotland Yard.

He has also been placed on the Sex Offendersโ€™ Register for seven years and has been given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for seven years. The order will remain on his record for the rest of his life, and for seven years he is required to tell employers that he is on the Sex Offendersโ€™ Register. After his brief stint in prison, he must register with the police and inform them of any changes of address, name, or if he plans to travel outside of the United Kingdom.

Resistance to our upward climb is not pleasant, but it is Blessed. Why? Because it is undoubted evidence that WE are really climbing Upward. It is somewhat like getting calluses as proof that we are working hard.

 

What are the sources of this resistanceโ€“and why?

 

The most obvious source is other people, sometimes even those which whom we are closely associated. โ€œHave I looked at it? Yes. Do I believe all of it? No. Iโ€™m not really sure what to think about all that,โ€ she said.

 

Whether or not candidates believe in QAnon, they are lending the ideas legitimacy by sharing them, said Jenny Guzman, legislative communications coordinator for Progress Arizona, a liberal group that has worked to draw attention to candidates sharing conspiracy theories.

 

โ€œI think that Republicans very clearly know what theyโ€™re doing when theyโ€™re engaging and spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories,โ€ Guzman said. โ€œBut when they get caught, theyโ€™re trying to play ignorant because they just donโ€™t want to face accountability for their actions.โ€

 

Most of the legislative candidates identified by the AP as having some history of posting about QAnon are Republicans, though some are independent or third-party candidates.

 

Some are not shy about their interest in the movement.

 

On her Twitter account, Melissa Moore has included a picture of Earth inside the letter Q with the slogan, โ€œThe World is About to Change,โ€ that is common among the movement's followers. She has also used several Q-associated hashtags in her tweets. A delegate to the Republican National Convention, she is running in a Democratic-leaning district in suburban Minneapolis.

 

โ€œI like following it,โ€ Moore said. โ€œItโ€™s an exciting movement that opens up our minds to different possibilities of whatโ€™s going on, of whatโ€™s really happening in our world today.โ€

Which fatality rate, did you say?

First, thereโ€™s the Infection Fatality Rate (IFR). This is the total number of people who are infected by a disease and the number of them who die. This figure includes those who have no symptoms at all, or only very mild symptoms โ€“ those who stayed at home, coughed a bit and watched Outbreak.

 

Then thereโ€™s the Case Fatality Rate (CFR). This is the number of people suffering serious symptoms, who are probably ill enough to be in hospital. Clearly, people who are seriously ill โ€“ the โ€œcasesโ€ โ€“ are going to have a higher mortality rate than those who are infected, many of whom donโ€™t have symptoms. Put simply โ€“ all cases are infections, but not all infections are cases.

 

Which means that the CFR will always be far higher than the IFR. With influenza, the CFR is around ten times as high as the IFR. Covid seems to have a similar proportion.

 

Now, clearly, you do not want to get these figures mixed up. By doing so you would either wildly overestimate, or wildly underestimate, the impact of Covid. But mix these figures up, they did.

 

The error started in America, but didnโ€™t end there. In healthcare, the US is very much the dog that wags the tail. The figures they come up with are used globally.

 

On February 28, 2020, an editorial was released by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the editorial stated: โ€œโ€ฆ the overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza.โ€

 

They added that influenza has a CFR of approximately 0.1 percent. One person in a thousand who gets it badly, dies.

 

But that quoted CFR for influenza was ten times too low โ€“ they meant to say the IFR, the Infection Fatality Rate, for influenza was 0.1 percent. This was their fatal โ€“ quite literally โ€“ mistake.

 

The mistake was compounded. On March 11, the same experts testified to Congress, stating that Covidโ€™s CFR was likely to be about one percent, so one person dying from a hundred who fell seriously ill. Which, as time has passed, has proved to be pretty accurate.

 

At this meeting, they compared the likely impact of Covid to flu. But they used the wrong CFR for influenza, the one stated in the previous NEJM editorial. 0.1 percent, or one in a thousand. The one that was ten times too low.

 

Flu toll 1,000 โ€“ Covid toll 10,000

So, they matched up the one percent CFR of Covid with the incorrect 0.1 percent CFR of flu. Suddenly, Covid was going to be ten times as deadly.

 

If influenza killed 50, Covid was going to kill 500. If influenza killed a million, Covid was going to get 10 million. No wonder Congress, then the world, panicked. Because they were told Covid was going to be ten times worse than influenza. They could see three million deaths in the US alone, and 70 million around the world.

 

I donโ€™t expect you or I to get this sort of thing right. But I bloody well expect the experts to do so. They didnโ€™t. They got their IFR and CFR mixed up and multiplied the likely impact of Covid by a factor of ten.

Michael Avenatti is sent subpoena in latest twist in Jussie Smollett case

Sneed hears ferociously outspoken attorney Michael Avenatti, a headline grabber recently found guilty of attempting to extort the sports apparel goliath Nike, is listed in a subpoena request by attorneys for actor Jussie Smollett, who is awaiting trial for staging a phony hate crime against himself.

 

The subpoena requested Avenatti to produce โ€œall documents related to any offers made by Avenatti on behalf of his clients, the Osundairo brothers โ€” and any documentation for other offers made to Smollett on behalf of his clients requesting money for the Osundairos,โ€ said William Quinlan, Smollettโ€™s Chicago attorney.

 

Translation: Any offers might show if there was an attempt to get a financial payoff to maintain the brothersโ€™ silence, Quinlan alleged.

 

A message left at Avenattiโ€™s office Friday went unreturned.

 

In a federal defamation lawsuit filed last year, Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo contend that Smollett paid them โ€œa sum of money to stage the attack [against Smollett] to benefit himselfโ€ and โ€œdirected every aspect of the attack, including the location and the noose.โ€

 

Avenatti, whose representation of President Donald Trump antagonizer Stormy Daniels dispatched him into the TV talkie stratosphere, claimed last year he was once asked to consider assisting the two Osundairo brothers.

 

n an interview last April with the legal news website Law & Crime, Avenatti stated: โ€œI was contacted by the counsel for the [Osundairo] brothers and asked to consider coming into the case to assist them. I ultimately decided not to get involved.โ€

 

On March 3, 2019, Avenatti texted Cook County Stateโ€™s Attorney Kim Foxx: โ€œI may be coming in to represent the brothers in the Smollett case. I know you recused yourself. Who is in charge that I can speak with?โ€ โ€” according to texts between Avenatti and Foxxโ€™s office published by the Chicago Tribune.

 

Avenattiโ€™s subpoena failed to be served because he is โ€œstill under house arrest awaiting sentencing due to the COVID-19 pandemic,โ€ Quinlan said, and not yet in the custody of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

 

In addition, โ€œUnfortunately, we were also told Avenatti is not permitted to access electronic devices while under house arrest.โ€

 

Quinlan tells Sneed he plans to issue a new subpoena once a date for the new Smollett trial is set and plans to list Avenatti as a potential witness in the upcoming trial.

 

In February, a special grand jury indicted Smollett on six counts of felony disorderly conduct โ€” once again accusing him of being behind the racist/homophobic attack on himself.

 

Earlier charges against Smollett, stemming from the initial attack, were suddenly dropped by Foxxโ€™s office, prompting a special prosecutor, Dan K. Webb, to be appointed last August to examine how Foxx and her staff handled the case.

 

(Webbโ€™s probe recently found Foxx and her associates misled the public and abused their discretion โ€” but no criminal charges were warranted.)

 

Subsequently, a Cook County grand jury indicted Smollett. The city is also seeking to recover the overtime cost of the Chicago Police Departmentโ€™s investigation of the alleged attack in federal court.

 

Meanwhile, Smollett quietly slipped into town several weeks ago to attend the funeral of Chicago organizer Ina Wilson, whose son, Phil, a Black Lives Matter movement director, was Smollettโ€™s mentor since he was 15 years old, said Quinlan.

 

โ€œPhil asked Jussie to sing at his motherโ€™s funeral and he did,โ€ he said. โ€œPhil was one of the four people along with Rev. Jesse Jackson to write character reference letters for him during the legal proceedings,โ€ added Quinlan.

 

Smollett, who claims he is in the process of cutting an album and working on directing a potential feature film, is scheduled to appear in a status hearing Thursday via Zoom in the courtroom of Criminal Court Judge James Linn on pre-trial motions for his upcoming trial.

Credit Suisse May Have Spied on More Staff, Swiss Newspaper Says

 

Credit Suisse Group AG may have spied on other employees beyond former star banker Iqbal Khan and its ex-head of human resources, Swiss newspaper SonntagsZeitung reported, citing people familiar with the matter and a probe of the bankโ€™s activities by banking regulator Finma. The Swiss bank surveilled a former employee in the U.S. as well as an ex-staff member in Asia and Finma is aware of the alleged activities, the newspaper reported, citing the people and an internal bank report. The employees that were allegedly spied on werenโ€™t members of senior management, SonntagsZeitung reported. Finma said earlier this month it had launched enforcement proceedings against Credit Suisse into alleged spying by the bank against Khan who joined rival bank UBS Group AG. It later emerged that ex-human resources chief Peter Goerke had also been monitored.

 

A Credit Suisse spokesman told Bloomberg on Sunday that the bank couldnโ€™t comment on the matter due to the ongoing Finma proceedings. The spokesman cited a previous statement that it would fully cooperate with Finma and that โ€œthe observation of employees is not part of the culture of Credit Suisse.โ€ A spokesman for Finma declined to comment, citing the ongoing proceedings.

 

SonntagsZeitung reported that one of the employees allegedly shadowed by Credit Suisse had threatened other staff and was therefore monitored. The other case could involve two former U.S. workers who had a relationship and may have shared bank information with outside parties, SonntagsZeitung said, citing the people. The Khan spy scandal tainted the bankโ€™s reputation, led to the ouster of CEO Tidjane Thiam after a power struggle, and rattled the usually quiet world of Swiss banking. An internal probe ordered by the bank at the time concluded that Thiam didnโ€™t know about the spying, and that Chief Operating Officer Pierre-Olivier Bouee was responsible. Bouee was fired late last year.

Responding to a tweet California will be taking up the 1619 Project doctrine in its schools, Trump tweeted Sunday morning:

The year 1619 was the year African slaves arrived in Virginia, and the project doctrine paints that as the beginnings of America and will be sharing that message to students in schools that adopt it.

 

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., a stout conservative and American historian, introduced a bill in July to defund schools that adopt the 1619 Project doctrine in their curriculum. Among the areas to do so are Democrat-heavy areas of Chicago and Washington, D.C., Fox News reported.

 

The 1619 Project is "a racially divisive, revisionist account of history that denies the noble principles of freedom and equality on which our nation was founded," according to Cotton.

 

Among the disputed claims in the project is viewing the American Revolution as not intended for independence from Britain but as a path to preserving slavery.

Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas The Texas Senate took a significant step toward protecting the safety of all Texans by passing Senate Bill 4 which upholds the rule of law andbans sanctuary policies in Texas. I am a co-author of this important legislation which was named an emergency item by Governor Greg Abbott. Senate Bill 4 includes both civil and criminal penalties for governmental entities that adopt sanctuary policies and establishing state law requiring federal immigration detainers to be honored is an extremely important part of this bill. I am not only the first Republican Senator ever elected to the Senate who lives in Travis County but I am also a doctor and a concerned citizen of Senate District 24. I believe in a safe Travis County and a safe Texas and actions recently taken by the Travis County Sheriffs Office have endangered our community and our state. Hundreds of illegal immigrants subject to detainers were released in the last week since the new sanctuary policy was adopted by the Travis County Sheriffs Office and I am proud the Senate has acted quickly in response. We are a nation of laws not of men and we must return to the rule of law. We must also eliminate lures such as sanctuary policies that encourage illegal immigration. If someone here illegally is arrested jailed and determined to be a threat to public safety in Texas and a federal detainer is issued a sheriff must keep them locked up until federal immigration officials come and take them away. Senate Bill 4 sends a clear message to not only the sheriff of Travis County but to sheriffs in all Texas counties: We expect you to follow federal detainers and if you do not you will be in violation of state law and with that come significant consequences. Book: FBI informant claimed to have stolen files from computer of then-New York Times reporter James Risen

 

Itโ€™s a well-documented fact that the U.S. government wanted access to the secrets of James Risen, the former New York Times national security reporter. In an interminable leak prosecution against former CIA officer Jeffrey Sterling, the Justice Department sought Risenโ€™s testimony regarding his sources for his news-breaking book, โ€œState of War: The Secret History of the CIA and the Bush Administration.โ€ After years of fighting subpoenas, Risen prevailed in 2015 when the Justice Department finally backed off.

Now a new drama over Risenโ€™s files crops up in โ€œDonald Trump v. The United States: Inside the Struggle to Stop a President,โ€ a new book by New York Times reporter Michael S. Schmidt.

An FBI informant, reports Schmidt, played a mind-blowing double game with the bureau following the 2013 leaks from NSA contractor Edward Snowden. As agents evaluated the information that spilled into the public realm from the Snowden trove, they grew worried that some of the stories stemmed from material to which Snowden didnโ€™t have access.So they postulated that there was perhaps a โ€œsecond Snowdenโ€ out there somewhere

 

According to Schmidtโ€™s book, the Washington field office of the FBI heard from a Europe-based lawyer who claimed that โ€œhe knew a man in Germany who had access to a trove of NSA documents and might leak them.โ€ Not only that โ€” the informant said that he wanted to stop the prospective source.

To thicken the plot, this same informant was chatting up Risen, the two-time Pulitzer Prize winner who, along with Eric Lichtblau, exposed the warrantless wiretapping program during the administration of George W. Bush. โ€œThe informant told Risen, who wrote about government spying, that he could help the Times obtain documents from the source revealing abuses of American surveillance authority,โ€ writes Schmidt. The two worlds of the informant collided in Bruges, Belgium, where he was attempting to lure the source for a meeting. Risen was also planning to visit Bruges โ€œaround the same time in the hopes of obtaining the leaked documents.โ€

The scheme twisted the FBI into legal, bureaucratic and logistical knots, as it sent an โ€œentire squadโ€ to Bruges to oversee a meeting between the FBIโ€™s informant and the source. One might expect subsequent developments ripped from the pages of some great spy thriller. The actual result, though, was a bit pathetic, as Schmidt reports:

 

The plan turned into a debacle. The source never arrived at the cafe, and the informant ended up getting drunk while waiting for him. When higher-ups at the bureau learned what had happened, they grew furious that an entire team had been sent to Belgium based on information from a man with little track record as a source who was also known to be double-crossing a reporter on the same matter.

Risen didnโ€™t travel to Bruges.

In 2014, Risen invited the informant to his Maryland home. The informant, reports Schmidt, โ€œlater said that while at the house he secretly copied a trove of documents from Risenโ€™s home computer onto a thumb drive. Whatever was on the thumb drive, and whatever the informantโ€™s motive for supposedly boosting the files from Risenโ€™s computer, he did hand over a thumb drive to his FBI handler.โ€

The thumb drive languished on a desk, reports Schmidt, because the bureauโ€™s handler wouldnโ€™t use it as evidence. But it didnโ€™t rest there in peace, because the informant informed a member of Congress, โ€œwho then called the top brass of the FBI, who were now learning for the first time that some of their agents had materials that had been stolen from a New York Times reporter,โ€ writes Schmidt. The FBI obsessed over how to handle the thumb drive hot potato, with then-Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. at one point erupting in rage that a plan for its handling was put on paper. Schmidt writes:

Narrative 1: Rioting is patriotic, and it works

โ€ข A common narrative pushed in the media as violence broke out across the United States in late May was that rioting is a quintessentially American activity with a storied history of bringing about positive change.

โ€ข Rolling Stone was among the first outlets to push the message on May 29 when it republished a story originally published in 2014 during the Ferguson riots titled โ€œ9 Historical Triumphs to Make You Rethink Property Destruction.โ€

โ€ข The โ€œhistorical pedigree of property destruction as a tactic of resistance is long and frequently effective.โ€ argued the article, which was co-authored by Jose Martin, a known alias of a Washington, D.C. Antifa leader who currently faces multiple felony charges in connection to a mob attack against two Marines in 2018.

โ€ข Like many of the articles that pushed this narrative, the Rolling Stone story cited the 1773 Boston Tea Party as proof of the positive change rioting can bring about.

โ€ข โ€œWorkers had produced that tea, capitalists had risked investment on it, and it was not the colonistsโ€™ to destroy, but they said โ€˜fuck property rightsโ€™ and did it anyway,โ€ the Rolling Stone article states. โ€œTodayโ€™s conservatives donโ€™t seem bothered by this inconvenient history, though, because think of the dress-up opportunities!โ€

โ€ข Rolling Stone editors added a note to the story when it was republished that stated: โ€œProtests erupted in Minneapolis, and have since spread across the country. Once again, some are criticizing the destruction of property as somehow equal โ€” or worse โ€” than the destruction of lives.โ€

President Donald Trump is continuing to wage battle against interpretations of history which he claims are un-American.

 

In a Sunday morning tweet, the President said the US Department of Education would investigate whether California schools are using the New York Times' "1619 Project" in public school curriculum. The Pulitzer-Prize winning collection reframes American history around the date of August 1619, when the first slave ship arrived on America's shores.

"Department of Education is looking at this. If so, they will not be funded!" he wrote on Twitter, citing a message from an unverified account saying it was being taught in schools there.

The message came after the President on Friday night banned federal agencies from conducting racial sensitivity training related to "white privilege" and "critical race theory."

Russell Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget, instructed heads of federal agencies to dramatically alter racial sensitivity training programs for employees, deeming them "un-American propaganda" in a two-page memo.

Like that memo, it's unclear the extent of the phenomenon the President is identifying. Some schools have said they will adopt the 1619 Project into their lessons โ€“ though how many isn't known.

The 1619 Project was launched by the New York Times Magazine last year. After the launch, the Pulitzer Center was named an education partner for the project and announced its education team would develop educational resources and curricula for teachers to use. The 1619 Project curriculum is available online for free through the center.

Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton, a Republican, has introduced legislation that would prevent schools from teaching the curriculum. The legislation, titled the Saving American History Act of 2020, "would prohibit the use of federal funds to teach the 1619 Project by K-12 schools or school districts. Schools that teach the 1619 Project would also be ineligible for federal professional-development grants."

The legislation appears unlikely to gain any significant traction in the Senate but stands as a way for Cotton to send a message.

The moves follow a pattern by the President of disparaging attempts to process or reckon with the country's fraught racial history. In his convention acceptance speech, the President said "Americans are exhausted, trying to keep up with the latest lists of approved words and phrases, and the ever more restrictive political decrees. Many things have a different name now, and the rules are constantly changing."

"We want our sons and daughters to know the truth," Trump went on. "America is the greatest and most exceptional nation in the history of the world. Our country wasn't built by cancel culture, speech codes, and crushing conformity. We are not a nation of timid spirits."

Trump has also sought to draw contrast with Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden in the months before the election. Trump has vowed to protect monuments, including those dedicated to Confederate figures, called the phrase "Black Lives Matter" a "symbol of hate" and threatened to withhold funding from cities in blue states that he says are permitting unrest in the streets.

The President and Attorney General William Barr have said that they don't believe systemic racism exists in the United States.

In an exclusive interview that aired Sunday with CNN's Dana Bash, Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris rebuked Trump and Barr's comments regarding systemic racism in the US, saying they are "spending full time in a different reality."

"We do have two systems of justice" for Black and White Americans, Harris told Bash.

The comments from the first Black and South Asian American woman on a major party presidential ticket come less than two months before the November election in which Harris suggested Trump was not a "real leader" on racial justice.

"I don't think that most reasonable people who are paying attention to the facts would dispute that there are racial disparities and a system that has engaged in racism in terms of how the laws have been enforced," said Harris, a California senator and former state attorney general. "It does us no good to deny that. Let's just deal with it. Let's be honest. These might be difficult conversations for some, but they're not difficult conversations for leaders, not for real leaders."

It was just recently that Democrats, fearing the size and influence of Amazon, Facebook, Apple, and Google, subjected these corporate titans to serious antitrust scrutiny. So itโ€™s particularly ironic that theyโ€™re now reflexively defending a literal government monopoly.

 

The latest squabble in the 2020 news cycle involved accusations of political meddling at the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). Ever since Trumpโ€™s appointment of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, Democrats have feared that changes to national mail delivery policies could undermine mail-based voting. Meanwhile, Republicans remain preoccupied with voter fraud.

 

You can argue the benefits or dangers of mail-based voting indefinitely, but whatโ€™s clear is the economics of the situation: The USPS is a failed agency. From a business standpoint, it makes perfect sense to abolish its monopoly over the delivery of first-class mail and fully legalize private competition.

 

Besides, breaking up a centralized monopoly that rewards political connections would nip presidential tampering or partisan gamesmanship in the bud. Ending the USPSโ€™s monopoly over the delivery of letters and first-class mail would greatly weaken, if not altogether eliminate, insidious political influence from unscrupulous actors.

 

The economic failings and inefficiencies of the USPS are well-documented. The U.S. Government Accountability Officeโ€™s (GAO) official summary from a scathing audit back in May acknowledges that USPSโ€™s financial condition is โ€œdeteriorating and unsustainable.โ€

 

โ€œUSPS has lost $69 billion over the past 11 fiscal yearsโ€”including $3.9 billion in fiscal year 2018,โ€ the summary reads. โ€œUSPSโ€™s total unfunded liabilities and debt ($143 billion at the end of fiscal year 2018) have grown to double its annual revenue.โ€

 

The GAO report makes clear that neither one-time bailouts nor higher mail prices can save the USPS from its systemic problems. Near the end of the report, the GAO calls upon Congress to consider fundamental changes to the USPSโ€™s institutional structure, including privatization, and change/pass any laws to make it happen.

 

Likewise, many economists, including the late Nobel Laureate Milton Friedman, have advocated abolishing postal monopoly and privatizing the Postal Service. Like most monopolies, the USPS has little incentive to keep costs controlled, to innovate, or to deliver new products and services. On the other hand, history shows breaking up centralized state monopolies and allowing genuine free market competition leads to better and cheaper products and servicesโ€ฆ..

But (I am told) I thanked President Trump, and I remember he held eye contact with me. And in his eyes, I could see โ€” unmistakably โ€” the same pain Iโ€™d seen in the eyes of other senior leaders who ultimately bear the responsibility for sending men and women to their deaths in combat.

 

As we unclasped our hands, the president said to me, โ€œShannon was the real deal, we are lucky to have people like her willing to go out there and face evil for us.โ€ He kept his arm on my shoulder.

 

Together, as we waited for the plane that would bring Shannon home, we spent another 20 minutes talking about my wife, our children and what an amazing mother, wife, and soldier she was. It was clear to me that President Trump truly cared โ€” not just that Shannon and three others had been killed in Syria, but about who Shannon and the three others were as people.

 

Then the president did something that I did not expect: he asked me what I thought about Syria and what we were doing there. He talked to me โ€” a Green Beret and a combat veteran, not some expert at the Pentagon or a think tank โ€” about the wisdom leaving troops in harm's way once ISISโ€™s territorial caliphate had been destroyed. It was clear to me that he was deeply conflicted about whether staying in Syria was worth the lives lost โ€” Shannon and her three colleagues โ€” on that day in January.

 

Following that hard day in Dover when Trump was with my family as Shannon came home, I attended another event with President Trump and was able to (perhaps more clearly) talk with members of his staff and family about foreign policy and Gold Star family issues, such as the casualty assistance officer program and changing Defense Department regulations in Shannonโ€™s honor.

 

So, when I read the anonymous allegations this week that President Trump spoke disparagingly of our troops, I knew they simply werenโ€™t true โ€” or were taken completely out of context in order to hurt him before the election.

 

President Trumpโ€™s actions have shown our troops more respect than any president in my lifetime. His use of decisive military force only when absolutely necessary, combined with his reluctance to use the military as the sole tool of foreign policy, is not only good and smart, but the sign of utmost respect for the lives of our troops.

 

Since 9/11, Americaโ€™s all-volunteer force has served under two presidents who were quick to ceremoniously praise our sacrifices without taking any real action to change the grinding status quo that has become the hallmark of the Global War on Terror. Instead of asking hard questions about what we were gaining or could ever gain and taking action based on those answers, Trump's predecessors fought wars with our troops in an effort to build new governments in Afghanistan and Iraq after 9/11, while letting the perpetrator of that terrorist attack escape to Pakistan (whose government we continue to support).

 

Former President Obama may have offered eloquent rhetoric, but very little changed during his tenure from his predecessor, except that he also got us involved in the conflict in Syria.

The Pulitzer Center released a school curriculum based on the project, and Trump responded to a tweet stating that California would be using it.

As both a veteran of our nationโ€™s wars and a Gold Star spouse, I find that platitudes about respect for our nationโ€™s troops from leaders without a strategy to keep us from getting into pointless or unwinnable wars are the highest form of disrespect. Our troops and our nation deserve a president who has our best interests in mind, not just meaningless platitudes about our service meant to paint a rosy picture of war and destruction.

 

America - and the men and women in uniform - need a president who will ask the hard questions about why we are fighting and dying and, yes, whether it was or will be worth it, and then will do his utmost to protect America, our troops, its military and its standing as the greatest fighting force the world has ever seen.

How an accident led to what could be a medical revolution.

The scientists crowded around Yuanchao Xueโ€™s petri dish. They couldnโ€™t identify the cells that they were seeing. โ€œWe saw a lot of cells with spikes growing out of the cell surface,โ€ said Xiang-Dong Fu, the research teamโ€™s leader at the University of California, San Diego. โ€œNone of us really knew that much about neuroscience, and we asked around and someone said that these were neurons.โ€ The team, who were made up of basic cellular and molecular scientists, were utterly puzzled. Where had these neurons come from? Xue had left a failed experiment, a dish full of human tumor cells, in the incubator, and when he looked two weeks later, he found a dish full of neurons.

 

Itโ€™s not often an unexpected cell type appears in a petri dish, as if from nowhere. Scientists all over the world have spent a lot of time and money actively trying to generate neurons in the labโ€”the implications for neurodegenerative disease would be massive. And yet this research team, who were actually studying the RNA-binding protein PTB, had unknowingly generated a whole dish of neurons.

 

โ€œIt puzzled me for quite a long time, and I didnโ€™t know what was wrong with my cells,โ€ said Xue, who is now a researcher at the Institute of Biophysics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in Beijing. Xue was attempting to deplete human tumor cells of PTB with small interference RNAs (siRNAs). He expected his cell lines, which are typically very proliferative, to keep growing, but they stopped, and so were cast aside for two weeks. Sure that the dish had become contaminated, Xue and colleagues tried the experiment again โ€ฆ and again โ€ฆ and again.

 

Not being fully aware of the field, and how they were going against the science, helped them. Their naivety allowed them to push forward.

 

โ€œWe tested every cell we could grab, and every single time we did the same thingโ€”that is removing the protein PTBโ€”and every single cell became a neuron,โ€ said Fu Fibroblasts, tumor cells, glial cells โ€ฆ The team realized every time they depleted the cell of PTB, the cell would convert into a neuron. The logical next step was to move onto mouse models of Parkinsonโ€™s diseaseโ€”the progressive death of dopamine-producing neurons that causes, among other things, tremor and movement problems. As with other neurodegenerative conditions, treatment is inherently difficult and current options are not curative.1 Neurogenesis, the generation of new neurons in the brain, typically stops during puberty. So when these cells become damaged or die, the body cannot replace them.

 

Xue and his colleagues decided to concentrate on the substantia nigra, a region in the midbrain where dopaminergic neurons predominate and typically die during the disease. The researchers decided to try the depleting-PTB technique on astrocytes, star-shaped non-neuronal cells that are abundant in the brain. Usually they produce the RNA-binding protein PTB1, which prevents them from becoming neurons. Banking on the idea that when neurons die, astrocytes typically proliferate and fill up this space in the brain, the team thought it might be useful to convert these excess astrocytes in Parkinsonโ€™s disease into neurons in vivo, in animal models.

GF was killed May 25, riots began shortly therafter, panic would have set in Jun 1 after weekend which kicked off the chaos. You see a dip the few days after the death, bit less than 4%, but starting Monday May 27 until Jun 10 nasdaq rose from 9180 to 10157 before correcting back to a low of 9370 on Jun 15. Thus any speculators that bought the few days after GF death either got wiped out on the 11% rise or held on to get out at the 9400 level, barely breaking even, a the marker never corrected to much below the range seen the days after GF death.

8 weird DARPA projects that make science fiction seem like real life

 

The agency responsible for the internet, GPS and stealth aircraft has produced a whole lot of weird in the 62 years since its foundation. For every one of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agencyโ€™s wild successes, there seem to be a plethora of wild failures โ€“ projects like mechanical elephants or telepathy research. What makes DARPA so unique is its ability to go outside the red tape of bureaucracy to innovate. DARPA isnโ€™t subject to the same acquisition rules as other agencies, which means it has fewer restrictions on the scientists and innovators it can hire and the salaries it can offer.

The agency also has fewer financial limitations, enabling it to invest in longshot projects with the hopes theyโ€™ll pay off โ€“ theyโ€™re basically the militaryโ€™s innovative venture capitalists. Here are some of the more interesting projects to come out of DARPAโ€™s โ€œhigh-risk, high-rewardโ€ environment.

1. Plant-eating robots

Perhaps the most aptly named project on this list, the Energy Autonomous Tactical Robot program sought to create robots that could feed off plants just as animals do. EATR would have enabled robots to remain in surveillance or defensive positions without resupply much longer than humans or robots with more limited power sources.We completely understand the publicโ€™s concern about futuristic robots feeding on the human population, but that is not our mission,โ€ Cyclone Power Technologies CEO Harry Schoell said in a press release

2. Houses that repair themselves

Imagine soldiers fashioning buildings and fortifications out of lightweight scaffolds instead of plywood, two-by-fours, and heavy sandbags. Then, those scaffolds quickly begin to fill in with durable material all on their own. And when that material is damaged, it grows right back to where it was. Thatโ€™s the goal of DARPAโ€™s Engineering Living Materials program, to create building materials that can be grown where needed and repair themselves when damaged. As researchers make progress with 3D printed organs and tissues, DARPA hopes to use similar technologies to create hybrid materials that can shape and support the growth of engineered cells.

3. Lab-grown blood

Blood pharming successfully decreased the cost of transfusable units from more than $90,000 to less than $5,000. Blood pharming is the process of creating red blood cells from cell sources in a lab rather than inside a human body. DARPAโ€™s Blood Pharming program was projected to increase the efficiency of production and lower the high costs associated with growing red blood cells. If completely successful, the program would have greatly increased access to transfusable blood for soldiers and hospitals around the world and reduced the risk of disease transmission during a transfusion.

4. Cyborg insects

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles may be all the rage, but theyโ€™re clunky and require people to design and assemble every piece. What if there were a way to piggyback sensors on flying creatures for free? DARPAโ€™s spy bugs were part of a 2006 project that wanted to implant transmitters in insects to use them for surveillance. The Hybrid Insect Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems program was run by teams from the University of Michigan and Cornell University.

5. Brain implants for PTSD

โ€ขDARPA doesnโ€™t just focus on cool gadgets for fighting wars. The agency also funds research on solutions for the negative effects war can have on soldiers. The Systems-Based Neurotechnology for Emerging Therapies program is tasked with creating โ€œan implanted, closed-loop diagnostic and therapeutic system for treating, and possibly even curing, neuropsychiatric illness,โ€ according to a DARPA press release.

6. Robotic infantry mules

The Legged Squad Support System (LS3) walks around the Kahuku Training Area July 10, 2014 during the Rim of the Pacific 2014 exercise.

Heavy lifting is one of the largest challenges affecting troopsโ€™ health and performance. Recognizing the affect the weight of soldiersโ€™ loads can have on them, DARPA began working with robotics company Boston Dynamics to create the Legged Squad Support System.

7. Nuke-propelled spaceship

DARPA also invests in researching space travel. Project Orion is a program from 1958 intended to research a new means of spaceship propulsion. This hypothetical model of propulsion relied on nuclear bomb detonations to power a craft forward and was supposedly capable of hitting astonishing speeds.

8. Mechanical elephants

In the 1960s, DARPA began researching vehicles that would enable troops and equipment to move more freely in the dense terrain of Vietnam. Following the footsteps of Hannibal before them, DARPA researchers decided that elephants could be the right tool for the job.

Using Algae to Make a Vaccine Against COVID-19

COVID-19 is the biggest event of the year with an enormous effect on the worldโ€™s economic health and public well-being. This virus will ultimately be defeated by a vaccine which should be generally available in the next 12-18 months.

โ€ข There is a race on among at least 83 vaccine manufactures as to who will get to the market first and who will have the most efficacious vaccine. We at Transalgae have a unique platform to tackle this problem. Our plan is to put a piece of the spike viral protein pictured above inside our favorite algal species, grow the algae out to commercial quantities and then give an algae pill with the vaccine inside.

โ€ข In effect, we are using a genetically modified algae to both manufacture the spike protein and provide a natural encapsulation. The reason one receives an insulin shot or a COVID-19 vaccine in the form of an injection, is that it is difficult to protect the protein of interest from our stomach acids. In addition to protecting the protein, the algae also make the vaccine.

โ€ข Oral delivery, if efficacious, has many advantages over injections. 1) People would prefer to swallow a pill rather than receive a shot. There is unlikely to be swelling, redness, or rashes. 2) Administration is vastly simplified. No need for a nurse or other trained practitioner. No need to potentially crowd into an area to receive a shot 3) Our bodies ingest many types of bacteria and viruses every day and our digestive systems are designed to eliminate them. An injection is at greater risk of inadvertent contamination due to the manufacturing process. 4) Algae cells do not attract mammalian bacteria and viruses. Regular vaccines use mammalian cells for production and those bacteria are dangerous for humans. 5) Poorer countries do not have the refrigeration capabilities that we have and have a shortage of trained health care professionals. For those countries, an oral vaccine is the difference between having a vaccine and not having a vaccine. 6) And the final advantage concerns the vaccination technique which some of the 83 competing vaccines share with ours. Instead of using a whole dead, or live attenuated virus, we are following the subunit strategy. We have identified a portion of the spike protein pictured above and are using its insertion in algae and subsequent ingestion to generate antibodies and an immune response. This is inherently safer since most of the virus (especially that part dealing with its reproduction) is missing from the pill.

โ€ข We start with the sequenced genome of the COVID-19 virus. Here is a published list of its amino acid sequences. The 22 different amino acids are stitched together to make all proteins. And prior to those amino acid sequences are the base pairs which make up the DNA of the virus. We have chosen one portion of one of the genes listed above that we think will best generate an immune response in a human. It is a part of the spike protein which you can see above.

โ€ข In order to cause our algae to make the desired portion of the spike protein, we have to use the alga's own codon usage table. A codon is a 3 base pair grouping that call for one of the 22 amino acids. To these base pairs needed to create the gene of interest (the spike protein), we add a promoter which tells the alga how many times to create the spike protein and a selection marker which enables us to figure out which algae have been transformed.

โ€ข Next we synthesize the DNA sequence and then use a PCR machine to multiply the sequence many millions of times. We add the DNA sequence into millions of algae cells spread on plates.

โ€ข This is where the selection marker mentioned above comes in. It enables us to figure out which algae were transformed. As part of the DNA which just entered the algae, we have included a gene which changes the metabolism of the algae IF it lands in the genome. We use this metabolic difference to select those algae which have been transformed.

โ€ข Our next step is to grow out the selected algae in petri dishes. Eventually they become large enough for us to test to see the quality of the transformation. We will choose the best transformant for our problem. We want high expression levels plus an intact and functional form of the protein of interest โ€“ the spike protein. We want our protein to fold in the same way that the virusโ€™ spike protein folds so that when ingested the algaeโ€™s spike protein creates useful antibodies then ready for the true corona virus.

โ€ขWe then grow out the algae in a fermenter in order to generate enough product to perform studies on mice fed the algae. First thing we hope for is that the spike protein shows up in their blood. Much of the algae passes through the digestive system without entering the blood stream, but the hope is that enough enters to create an immune response.

Trailing nationally and in many swing state polls, the Trump campaign is redoubling efforts to build more minority and woman voters into its electoral coalition.

According to CBS News, the campaign kicked off a series of swing state bus tours last month, capitalizing on the fact that former Vice President Joe Biden had yet to hit the general election campaign trail in earnest.

On Thursday, one of those buses stopped off at the Latinos for Trump field office in Phoenix, where Women for Trump campaign surrogates and local candidates touted a Republican presence never before seen among women and minority communities.

โ€œI love the fact that our president and his campaign have made great efforts to look at how important our diverse communities are,โ€ Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Yee told an audience of local volunteers and staffers.

Yee, who serves as co-chair of the Asian Americans for Trump advisory board, praised the campaignโ€™s grassroots investment in minority communities on a personal level, saying it filled her with โ€œsentimental passionโ€ to see such offices springing up in the region.

โ€œWe never had this in any presidential election, where they built and invested in operations on the ground, grassroots, to be able to support our diverse community because we know how important you are. You are able to share that American story, that great American dream story, about your families, how you have continued to build success,โ€ she said.

Republican state representative candidate Tatiana Peรฑa spoke with similar amazement about the campaignโ€™s ground game in her local community.

โ€œWe never had a presence of Republicans in this community like we see today,โ€ Peรฑa told The Western Journal in an interview prior to the campaign event. โ€œThis has never happened as far as I am concerned.โ€

The daughter of two Hispanic immigrants, Peรฑa was born and raised in Phoenix, where she now works as an educator and mother of three โ€” with a fourth on the way.

Despite frequent allegations of racism and sexism leveled against President Donald Trump by the American left, Peรฑa suggested her community has seen record growth in recent years, prompting Hispanic friends and acquaintances to challenge Democratic expectation of the minority vote.

Journalist Patrick Howley first reported that NIAID funded Wuhan Institute of Virology scientists to conduct bat coronavirus research in an article for National File. Howley reported:

 

Dr. Anthony Fauciโ€™s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) actually funded a study on Bat Coronavirus, which was a project that included scientists at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the Chinese lab at the center of controversy over their bat research. That study confirmed in 2018 that humans have died from coronavirus.

Hereโ€™s an excerpt from the April 4, 2018 NIAID website entry entitled โ€œNew Coronavirus Emerges From Bats in China, Devastates Young Swineโ€: โ€œA newly identified coronavirus that killed nearly 25,000 piglets in 2016-17 in China emerged from horseshoe bats near the origin of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), which emerged in 2002 in the same bat species. The new virus is named swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV). It does not appear to infect people, unlike SARS-CoV which infected more than 8,000 people and killed 774. No SARS-CoV cases have been identified since 2004. The study investigators identified SADS-CoV on four pig farms in Chinaโ€™s Guangdong Province. The work was a collaboration among scientists from EcoHealth Alliance, Duke-NUS Medical School, Wuhan Institute of Virology and other organizations, and was funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health. Yes, but Why would they need to be allowed survive?
