While some netizens seemed to welcome Greta's message, others appeared less receptive to her rhetoric.

With the presidential election in the United States looming on the horizon, teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg has stepped forward to urge voters to support one of the candidates – Joe Biden.

In a recent tweet of hers, Greta argued that while she never engages in “party politics”, the upcoming US elections "is above and beyond all that".

"From a climate perspective it’s very far from enough and many of you of course supported other candidates. But, I mean…you know…damn!" she tweeted. "Just get organized and get everyone to vote #Biden".

Deceased high-ranking bishop accused of abetting sex abuse in Germany

The accusations shine a light on the 'St. Gallen Group,' a cabal of bishops who have long striven to liberalize the Church.

Cardinal Karl Lehmann, one of the members of the so-called “Sankt Gallen Group,” has now been accused by experts of having covered up for abuse cases in his diocese of Mainz, Germany. Together with his predecessor Hermann Volk, Lehmann, who died in 2018, is accused of moving priests who were accused of sexual abuse into other parishes. “Clear indications in the parishes were ignored and played down,” according to Ulrich Weber, the head of the new Mainz abuse study.

On Wednesday, October 7, Weber, together with the current bishop of Mainz, Peter Kohlgraf, presented the interim results of his study that the diocese had started in 2019. Weber is a lawyer who had previously investigated the choir of the Regensburg singers. This Mainz study is to be published in 2020 and covers all abuse cases since 1945 up to 2019. So far, there have been found 422 victims and 273 accused persons in the diocese, but further research and confirmation of the accusations need to be done.

It is clear that under both Volk and Lehmann, “the diocesan leadership often did not have an adequate response to relevant reports,” Weber explained during a press conference, according to the Catholic website Domradio. Even severe accusations of abuse merely led to small sanctions on the part of the diocese. In addition, if one of the accused priests was sent to another diocese, no information was passed on concerning his deeds. Victims, abusers, and those who informed the diocese about sexual abuse were also instructed to remain silent. Weber added that the personnel files were kept in such a way that they contributed to the obfuscation of the abuse cases.

Karl Lehmann was the bishop of Mainz from 1983 until 2016; his predecessor, Hermann Volk, had ruled the diocese from 1962 until 1982. Volk, like Lehmann, was a progressivist theologian and had participated at the Second Vatican Council, promoting the idea of ecumenism and friendship with Protestants. Lehmann served as an assistant to Father Karl Rahner at the Second Vatican Council. These two men were responsible for this mishandling of abuse cases for more than fifty years.

According to the report of the local newspaper Allgemeine Zeitung, Weber insisted that both Lehmann and Volk are to be accused of “misconduct with regard to cases of sexual violence.” In one case, one paid the legal costs for an abuser, Weber explained, and in another, one downplayed the gravity of the actual sexual abuse. “Often, the response to abuse cases was to place the abuser priest into another parish.” This took place even when the “pedophile inclinations were already the object of conversations in the city,” he added.

South America: The Escazu Agreement Requires a Change in Regional Politics

Taking into consideration the UN Sustainable Development Goals in terms of environmental matters, the Escazu Agreement, an initiative of Latin American and Caribbean countries, seeks to regulate regional standards in terms of environmental protection. Equally important is the treaty’s aim to protect environmental activists and defenders, as well as guaranteeing the inclusion of marginalised people, or communities.

The initiative was led by Chile and Costa Rica, laying the foundations for a human rights treaty at a regional level. Chile, which helped to draft the treaty under former president Michelle Bachelet, has once again refused to sign the agreement, with Pinera calling it “inconvenient” due to the possibility of the country facing international legal action for environmental crimes and conflicts. Several environmental activists have been found dead in Chile following Pinera’s withdrawal from the agreement, raising suspicion that the individuals were targeted by state and multinational interests.

Argentina’s ratification is important for the region. The Italian fashion brand, Benetton, owns 2.2 million acres of land which is considered ancestral territory by the indigenous Mapuche people. The purchase took place in 1991, when the Argentinian government’s adoption of neoliberalism prompted privatisation of land. Since the late 19th century, Mapuche territory had been targeted and the people expelled, thus initiating the imbalance of power between the state and the indigenous population.

Despite Argentinian law recognising the Mapuche people’s ancestral rights to land, the state and corporate interests hold sway over such rights. As happens elsewhere in Latin America, the complicity between states and multinational companies has resulted in militarisation and securitisation of indigenous land, the criminalisation of indigenous resistance, as well as the targeting of environmental and indigenous activists; Argentina having been heavily scrutinised for the killing and disappearance of Santiago Maldonado. Azerbaijan, Armenia Claimed Ceasefire Violations Few Minutes After Its Declaration

A few minutes into the humanitarian ceasefire in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan and Armenian began accusing each other of violations.

The ceasefire was announced on October 10 morning from the Russian capital, Moscow, where Azerbaijani-Armenian talks are taking place. The ceasefire began at 12:00 PM local time.

Boris Johnson’s ‘Green New Deal’ Plan Will Double Your Energy Bill

This is only the beginning of their problems. While their plan claims to be a ‘green jobs creator’ – in reality it will almost certainly bankrupt the country.

Israel to ‘immediately’ bring over 2,000 Ethiopian Jews

Netanyahu tells Ethiopian PM the Jewish state is committed to 'continued aliyah of Jews to Israel' that was halted due to coronavirus; Jews are often referred to in Ethiopia as 'Falashas,' a derogatory word which translates as 'strangers'

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told his Ethiopian counterpart that his country has the intention to “immediately” bring over some 2,000 Ethiopian Jews.

The announcement came Friday after a phone call with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Netanyahu’s office said the decision comes “out of his commitment to the continued aliyah of Jews to Israel."

Some 13,000 Ethiopian Jews are in the capital, Addis Ababa, and in Gondar, most of them waiting to be taken to Israel, which they call home. Most live in dire conditions and have threatened to stage a hunger strike if they’re not allowed to travel to their “homeland.” Many say they have family members who have settled in Israel.

“Some 250 people have left for Israel within the past year until COVID-19 came. Now the travel has stopped, but Israeli officials are conducting interviews online,” Nigusie Alemu Eyasu, program director for the Ethiopian Jews Community, said.

"Six months ago, the prime minister and I, pledged to the Ethiopian community that we will continue the aliyah from Ethiopia," said Likud MK Gadi Yevarkan, who is of Ehiopian descent. "I thank you on behalf of the community for the continued aliyah."

Activists say Israel’s government in 2015 pledged to bring the remaining Ethiopian Jews to Israel. In 1991 while Ethiopia was in the midst of civil war, Israel carried out the dramatic Operation Solomon, airlifting out some 14,500 Ethiopian Jews in less than two days.

Kevin Rudd creates petition for News Corp royal commission

Former Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd says he was motivated to launch a petition calling for a royal commission into Rupert Murdoch's media empire after coming to the conclusion that News Corp was running a "protection racket" for the Coalition.

Almost 6000 people had signed the petition less than 24 hours after Mr Rudd's announcement on Saturday morning, leading to some glitches on the Australian Parliament website when people tried to sign.

While other parliaments around the world have a "signature threshold" for petitions, Australia does not – meaning there will be no requirement that the Parliament or the federal government act on the petition.

Labor leader Anthony Albanese, who was a close political ally of Mr Rudd, did not comment on Saturday on whether he agreed with the former prime minister, with his office referring inquiries to Labor's communication spokeswoman Michelle Rowland. Senior Labor sources said the opposition was unlikely to back Mr Rudd's call for a royal commission.

News Corp Australia and the Morrison government also declined to comment.

Mr Rudd, who courted and won News Corp’s support in the 2007 federal election, labelled the company a "cancer on democracy" and said the move was prompted by his "passion for the country's future".

"In Queensland, a state which swings federal election results, virtually every single newspaper is owned by Murdoch.

Ethiopian women in Israel 'given contraceptive without consent'

Israel's health ministry is investigating claims that Ethiopian women are being injected with a controversial contraceptive without their knowledge or consent.

Thousands of Ethiopian women are said to be receiving shots of Depo-Provera every three months in Israeli clinics. The contraceptive stops menstruation and has been linked to fertility problems and osteoporosis.

Yaakov Litzman, Israel's deputy minister of health, who has previously denied the practice, will lead the inquiry, a spokesperson announced on Wednesday.

The phenomenon was uncovered when social workers noticed the birth rate among Ethiopian immigrants halving in a decade. An Israeli documentary investigating the scandal was aired in December and prompted a popular outcry.

It revealed that women were started on a course of contraceptive jabs while still in transit camps in Ethiopia, some without being told they were being given birth control and many having no idea of the side-effects. When they eventually arrived in Israel, doctors continued the treatment unquestioningly. But the critical question remains unanswered as to who instigated the policy, with neither Israel nor Ethiopia willing to claim responsibility.

Sava Reuben, an Ethiopian who has lived in Israel since 1984, interviewed more than 35 women from her community for the film and found that 25 were still receiving contraceptive shots from healthcare providers.

Reuben spoke to one woman who believed she had been given a flu vaccination and had no idea she had been injected with Depo-Provera.

Another was pregnant with her fifth child when she arrived in the transit camp, where she would live for seven years. The woman in her thirties told Reuben that officials had gathered together all the new mothers in the camp and told them they would be given Depo-Provera as it would be too difficult for them to give birth Israel.

"No, we didn't want to take it, we refused. We said we didn't want it," the unnamed woman recalls in the film. She agreed to the injections only because she was told her immigration to Israel would be blocked and she would receive no further healthcare in the camps if she refused.

"This happened to many, many other women," Reuben said.

More than 50,000 Ethiopian Jews have immigrated to Israel in the past decade. The fast-growing community has struggled against bias. In 1996, thousands rioted when it was discovered that the Israeli health ministry had destroyed all stocks of blood donated by Ethiopians on the grounds that it might be contaminated with HIV.

Israel's health ministry has strongly denied allegations that the injections are part of a policy to control the growth of the Ethiopian community.

"The Israel ministry of health neither advises nor encourages the use of Depo-Provera injections and if they are being administered this is in despite of our view," a spokesperson said.

And yet Reuben claims to have discovered a letter from the health ministry to a clinic in Ethiopia in 2000 thanking doctors there for the large numbers of women they had treated with Depo-Provera.

"Why are only Ethiopian women being given Depo-Provera in Israel? It's supposed to be a last-resort contraceptive. Israeli health authorities claim the injections are a cultural preference but in our culture, to have lots of children is to be rich," Reuben said.

"It is my opinion that this is a deliberate policy on the part of Israel. They are taking advantage of women who are weak because they are new to the country, do not understand the language and who traditionally respect authority. It makes me more than angry."

Dr Mushira Aboodia, a gynaecologist working at Jerusalem's Hadassah medical centre, said the majority of Ethiopian women she had met received Depo-Provera injections.

"This is a policy that no one will admit. No one in Israel will take responsibility for the treatment in the camps but someone must have instigated it and it would not be in Ethiopia's interests to treat women preparing to leave the country," Aboodia said.

"Something is definitely wrong here. I'm very glad the ministry of health will be investigating the issue. They will need to do a thorough job."

After Congress gave Trump $1.3 billion instead of his requested $5.7 billion for border wall funding, the president invoked the National Emergencies Act to declare an emergency at the southern border.

Ruling 2-1, the Ninth Circuit panel found that the diversion of funds to be unlawful and sidestepped the constitutional separation of powers, including the legislative branch’s control of funding.

“Particularly in the context of this case, where Congress declined to fund the very projects at issue and attempted to terminate the declaration of a national emergency (twice), we cannot interpret the statute to give the Executive Branch unfettered discretion to divert funds to any land it deems under military jurisdiction,” wrote Chief Circuit Judge Sidney Thomas, a Bill Clinton appointee.

U.S. Circuit Judge Daniel Collins, a Trump appointee, dissented from the majority, claiming that the court went too far to determine the scope of the law.

“The majority’s contrary conclusion rests on the implicit view that this court gets to substitute its own view of when the armed forces are needed in a national emergency for the view of the President as stated in the emergency declaration,” Collins wrote.

Extreme global poverty is expected to rise in 2020 for the first time in over 20 years due to the disruption caused by the “extraordinary” coronavirus crisis, the World Bank has warned.

According to a new report, the Covid-19 pandemic is expected to push an additional 88 million to 115 million people into extreme poverty this year, with the total rising to as many as 150 million by 2021, depending on the severity of the economic contraction.

Extreme poverty, defined as living on less than $1.90 a day, is likely to affect between 9.1 percent and 9.4 percent of the world’s population this year, it said. That would represent a regression to the rate of 9.2 percent in 2017. Had the pandemic not convulsed the globe, the poverty rate was expected to drop to 7.9 percent in 2020.

No to ‘permanent fear campaigns’: Thousands of anti-lockdown protesters decry government restrictions in Berlin

Thousands of people marched through central Berlin protesting the lockdown measures taken by the German government due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which they say violate their “human rights.”

A loose column of demonstrators stretched along several major streets of the German capital as they slowly walked from Konrad Adenauer Square in the western part of the city to the Victory Column in the central Tiergarten Park and near the iconic Brandenburg Gate.

Dubbed the ‘Silent March’ by its organizers, the demonstration was nevertheless held with the slogan ‘We have to speak out!’ displayed on a large banner that a group of protesters marching at the helm of the procession were carrying. Apart from that, there were hardly any signs, as the organizers urged them to leave all flags, banners, and even clothing with slogans printed on it at home.

“We are a colorful mix of… people from various ethnic and income level groups, who left all their political affiliations behind and who disagree with the politicization of the coronavirus [pandemic] resulting in restriction of our human rights,” the organizers said in a statement ahead of the march.

The protesters say the situation with the virus merits a broader public discussion and demand an end to the “permanent fear campaigns” they say the government has launched.

The organizers initially expected up to 20,000 to turn out for the march. According to the police, the actual number was significantly lower, amounting to “several thousands.” Still, 200 officers were deployed to maintain order.

The march went ahead peacefully, as there were no reports of incidents during the demonstration. However, on the sidelines of the protest, police arrested Attila Hildmann, a controversial “vegan influencer”. The reasons for his arrest are unclear.

Hildmann attended the march without a mask and chanted political slogans. German media said he compared the lockdown measures in Germany with the infamous Guantanamo prison when police asked him to put a mask on.
