Disney Admits to Knowingly Working With Human Rights Abusers in China

Walt Disney Co. defended its cooperation with government entities accused of human-rights abuses in China’s Xinjiang region, saying the company had to work with the government in order to make films there.

“There are regulations that must be followed by all foreign film production companies wanting to operate in China,” Sean Bailey, president of Disney’s film studio, said in an Oct. 7 letter to two British politicians. “These companies are not allowed to operate independently and must partner with a Chinese production company which is responsible for securing all film permits.”

Disney released “Mulan,” a $200 million live-action remake of the company’s 1998 animated hit, last month. With the pandemic keeping many people in the U.S. and Europe out of movie theaters, the company made the film available for $30 to subscribers of its Disney+ streaming service.

Within hours of its release, eagle-eyed viewers saw that the company thanked several entities in Xinjiang, where the government has been accused of oppressing the country’s Muslim-minority Uighurs.

The letter was addressed to Iain Duncan Smith, a member of the House of Commons, and Baroness Helena Kennedy, of the House of Lords, and it came in response to their query. Duncan Smith released it on Twitter.

Disney said the film is a celebration of female empowerment, based on a 1,500-year-old Chinese poem. The scenes in Xinjiang amount to just 78 seconds, and were done to capture the region’s dramatic desert scenery and the historic Silk Road. Most of the movie was shot in New Zealand.

The company said its Chinese partner Beijing Shadow Times Culture Co. began submitting film permits in 2017, before the U.S. or U.K. governments had issued risk advisories or policy rulings regarding the region.

“The decision to film in each of these locations was made by the film’s producers to film in the interest of authenticity, and was in no way influenced or dictated by state or local Chinese officials,” Bailey wrote.

Disney released the film theatrically in overseas markets where it doesn’t offer the Disney+ service, and it has taken in $66.8 million globally, two-thirds of that from China. Last year’s remake of “The Lion King” took in $116 million in China alone.

My employer is Iranian and the company I work for is spoopy to the extreme. I'd call it an "employer of last resort" as it definitely seems many folks work there because they can't get hired elsewhere due to "background", lack of English skills, or perhaps being here illegally. PPE missing or inadequate, has to be many numerous violations of multiple regulations, and etc. If someone leaves, a supervisor, for example, the position may not get filled meaning more and more work is expected from fewer and fewer people. The owner and family are extraordinarily secretive about company finances not even allowing personnel (as I've been told) who normally would know the details. The company has multiple locations and corporate offices but the only official communication I have with anything "corporate" is via a family member of the owner. I'd say there are pretty credible allegations of harassment by this individual, but probably no one working there has means to pursue anything.

I am conservative and Christian and am, at least a little, glad to have been employed by this company because my truthfulness online and history of action against an abortion provider not to mention age have made me largely "unemployable". However, as details about Iran and MB get shared I seriously wonder if revenue from my employer is flowing anywhere it should not. Wages as you would guess at this company seem below average. (Pic related) Of course, with the multiple nationalities employed and the low wage environment, it should be obvious there is no union representation.

As an aside: I am slowly starting to direct my purchases towards conservative Christians as much as possible. I am very happy with my new "My Pillows". I'm not trying to advertise for them, but it has been a serious prayer request of mine to see Christians who are good at business reach out to those whose giftings are elsewhere. I find it difficult to fulfill family goals or independent research and writing while needing to be 'wage slave' working.

The Latest Woke Demand – Stop Teaching Black Students Standard English

If we’ve learned anything this year, it’s that anything can be called “racist.” Among the things fitting that description is the teaching of standard English. Supposedly, that is demeaning to black students and lowers their self esteem. The Conference on College Composition and Communication (an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of English) has released a demand that teachers and professors stop doing that.

One academician who thinks that this is a bad development is Boston University’s Matthew Stewart. In today’s Martin Center article, he explains his position.

Regarding the demand, Stewart writes, “In language that invokes old Dixie rather than the 2020 schoolroom, the CCCC statement portrays American schools as places where black children meet nothing but disrespect in their English classes. Language instruction as it is now practiced is said to ‘seek to annihilate Black Language + Black Life.’ Thus, educators are called to engage in a ‘political process that must inherently challenge institutions like schools whose very foundations are built on anti-Black racism.’”

Lots of English teachers will no doubt be devastated to hear that they have been complicit in the “annihilation” of black life and language when they correct papers for grammatical errors.

This wild exercise in virtue signaling will make many “progressives” feel good, but will it do anything for students? Stewart thinks not: “Proponents of Black English have made similar proposals in the recent past. The controversial 1990s Ebonics movement (a purpose-built blend of ebony and phonics) arose from the same basic assumptions as the CCCC statement, which is bound to produce the same set of counterarguments heard by Ebonics proponents. The chief criticism leaps to mind: Students who do not learn Standard English will be at a disadvantage once they leave their classrooms.”

I’m sure the “progressives” will then solve that problem by demanding that employers stop caring about how well prospective employees can use English.

INDIAN OCEAN - The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group began maritime security and stability operations in the Indian Ocean, Oct. 9.

The carrier strike group, including the Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and the embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam (CG 54), and Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Halsey (DDG 97), routinely operates throughout the Indo-Pacific in support of U.S. commitments to regional allies and partners.

These operations mark the second occasion of the 2020 deployment that the strike group has sailed in the Indian Ocean, demonstrating its capability to quickly respond to any contingency throughout the region.

“Our flexible presence is a key element in helping assure our regional allies and partners that the United States remains committed to ensuring freedom of the seas,” said Capt. Fred Goldhammer, commanding officer, USS Ronald Reagan. “From the international dateline to the Indian Ocean, and everywhere in between, on board Ronald Reagan we seek to preserve peace through strength, and remain ready to answer the call.”

While operating in the Indian Ocean, strike group ships and aircraft will maintain high-end warfighting readiness through air defense, anti-submarine warfare, maritime strike, and force protection exercises.

The United States remains committed to protecting the rights, freedoms, and lawful uses of the sea, and the ability of all countries to exercise those rights. Together, the U.S. and its allies promote peace and prosperity by supporting international norms.

The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group is forward-deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific region. U.S. 7th Fleet is the largest numbered fleet in the world, and with the help of 35 other maritime-nation allies and partners, the U.S. Navy has operated in the Indo-Pacific region for more than 70 years, providing credible, ready forces to help preserve peace and prevent conflict.
