Harris suspends travel after staffer tests COVID-19 positive

 

Joe Biden's presidential campaign said Thursday that vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris will suspend in-person events until Monday after two people associated with the campaign tested positive for coronavirus. The campaign said Biden had no exposure, though he and Harris spent several hours campaigning together in Arizona on Oct. 8.

 

Harris was scheduled to travel Thursday to North Carolina for events encouraging voters to cast early ballots.

 

The campaign told reporters Thursday morning that Harris' communications director and a traveling staff member for her travel to Arizona tested positive after that Oct. 8 trip.

 

Harris and Biden spent several hours together that day through multiple campaign stops, private meetings and a joint appearance in front of reporters at an airport. They were masked at all times in public, and aides said they were masked in private, as well. Biden and Harris have each had multiple negative tests since then.

 

Biden is scheduled to attend an ABC News town hall airing live at 8 p.m. EDT.

'Absolute Travesty:' Paul Manafort's ex-partner Rick Gates breaks silence on Mueller probe

 

The Russia probe 'should never happen to any president or any American citizen' ever again, former Trump aide says.

 

In his first lengthy public interview since pleading guilty to federal charges in Robert Mueller's now-discredited Trump-Russia collusion probe, Rick Gates slammed that investigation in blunt and unequivocal terms, calling it "an absolute travesty of justice" that "should never happen to any president or any American citizen" ever again.

 

Gates, who served in President Trump's 2016 campaign and later plead guilty to conspiracy and false statement charges related to his work in Ukraine, said in an interview on the latest episode of the John Solomon Reports podcast that his experience taught him "the way our justice system can be weaponized against so many different people."

 

The former political consultant stated bluntly that the tactics used by the Mueller investigation indicated that "there was no question that they were trying to get to the president."

Mr. Jacks was caught on hidden-camera video by Project Veritas talking about using violence for political ends, pressuring a Biden administration to do the left’s bidding by occupying the White House, and musing about a hypothetical situation involving killing β€œthree or four” billionaires, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

 

β€œ2020 is a political revolution. I am going to do everything morally acceptable to win,” Mr. Jacks said in footage taken at a bar. β€œI will lie, I will cheat, I will steal, because that’s morally acceptable in this political environment.”

 

Interspersed were references to Antifa and guillotines as well as β€œkilling random Nazis in the street” and how the right may β€œunderestimate how many people on the left are organized, trained, armed and ready to go.”

 

β€œI mean again, I believe there is absolutely justified violence in all sorts of circumstances,” Mr. Jacks said in the hidden-camera footage. β€œI do think there needs to be a militant group, and I love Antifa for that reason.”

 

It would be easy to write him off as a fringe figure or blowhard, except that according to a screen grab from the Weld County Democrats website, Mr. Jacks is a β€œMember of the Colorado Democratic Party Executive and Central Committees.”

This has probably already been pointed out by Anons. I'm an old fag lurker. I know there has been a lot of digs on 4 10 20 and many felt is referred to a date. It doesn't appear that was correct. Fortier explained that during that time period the party can try to put a new candidate forward, but ultimately the electors would hold the power to decide who gets that spot. The final scenario would happen after Dec. 14. In that case, Fortier said Congress takes over.

 

β€œIf they saw there were electors cast for someone who died or left the ballot they might keep the votes or they may throw them out,” he said.

 

Suffice it to say, it would be a complicated process until Inauguration Day.

A chairman of a board of elections in South Carolina resigned after he and his wife were accused of removing and defacing multiple Donald Trump campaign signs from someone’s yard, numerous sources reported.

 

A resident of Pawleys Island reported to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday that Trump campaign signs were disappearing from his yard. A deer camera the resident placed in his yard caught the offender on Oct. 4 taking his signs and defacing another by writing β€œdump” over the Trump name on the sign, Coastal Observer reported.

 

An incident report identifies the offender as Dean Smith, who was seen on camera driving away with his wife, the report says according to WPDE. Smith resigned after serving on the elections board for 15 years Wednesday, two days after Republican Party officials filed a complaint with the sheriff’s office accusing him of helping his wife deface the campaign sign.

 

Rita Smith, Smith’s wife and a HOA president, said she did deface the sign, but said the circumstances were different from those described to the sheriff’s office, according to Coastal Observer. She alleges she received a complaint from a property owner in September about a resident with a Trump flag on his garage, in violation of HOA rules.

The Bank of Japan may set a limit on the amount of central bank digital currencies (CBDC) it issues or allows entities to hold if it is to issue them, a senior BOJ official said on Thursday.

 

Any such move would be aimed at preventing an unwelcome shift of money out of commercial banks’ accounts into CBDCs, said Kazushige Kamiyama, head of the BOJ’s payment and settlement systems department that oversees CBDC studies. β€œIt’s an option. But it’s not something we can say will definitely happen,” as much will depend on the outcome of upcoming experiments on CBDCs, he told Reuters.

 

The BOJ said last week it would begin experimenting from next fiscal year on whether it can issue its own digital currency, joining efforts by other central banks to catch up to rapid private-sector innovation. Kamiyama said he hopes to begin the first phase of experiments at the start of the next fiscal year in April and move to the second phase by the end of the business year in March 2022.

Emails reveal how Hunter Biden tried to cash in big on behalf of family with Chinese firm

"Hunter Biden pursued lucrative deals involving China’s largest private energy company β€” including one that he said would be β€œinteresting for me and my family,” emails obtained by The Post show."

One email sent to Biden on May 13, 2017, with the subject line β€œExpectations,” included details of β€œremuneration packages” for six people involved in an unspecified business venture.

Biden was identified as β€œChair / Vice Chair depending on agreement with CEFC,” an apparent reference to the former Shanghai-based conglomerate CEFC China Energy Co.

His pay was pegged at β€œ850” and the email also noted that β€œHunter has some office expectations he will elaborate.”

In addition, the email outlined a β€œprovisional agreement” under which 80 percent of the β€œequity,” or shares in the new company, would be split equally among four people whose initials correspond to the sender and three recipients, with β€œH” apparently referring to Biden.

'The deal also listed β€œ10 Jim” and β€œ10 held by H for the big guy?”

Neither Jim nor the β€œbig guy” was identified further.

The email’s author, James Gilliar of the international consulting firm J2cR, also noted, β€œI am happy to raise any detail with Zang if there is [sic] shortfalls?”

β€œZang” is an apparent reference to Zang Jian Jun, the former executive director of CEFC China.

The email is contained in a trove of data that the owner of a computer repair shop in Delaware said was recovered from a MacBook Pro laptop that was dropped off in April 2019 and never retrieved.

The computer was seized by the FBI, and a copy of its contents made by the shop owner shared with The Post this week by former Mayor Rudy Β­Giuliani.

Another email β€” sent by Biden as part of an Aug. 2, 2017, chain β€” involved a deal he struck with the since-vanished chairman of CEFC, Ye Jianming, for half-ownership of a holding company that was expected to provide Biden with more than $10 million a year.

Ye, who had ties to the Chinese military and intelligence service, hasn’t been seen since being taken into custody by Chinese authorities in early 2018, and CEFC went bankrupt earlier this year, according to reports.

Biden wrote that Ye had sweetened the terms of an earlier, three-year consulting contract with CEFC that was to pay him $10 million annually β€œfor introductions alone.”

β€œThe chairman changed that deal after we me[t] in MIAMI TO A MUCH MORE LASTING AND LUCRATIVE ARRANGEMENT to create a holding company 50% percent [sic] owned by ME and 50% owned by him,” Biden wrote.

β€œConsulting fees is one piece of our income stream but the reason this proposal by the chairman was so much more interesting to me and my family is that we would also be partners inn [sic] the equity and profits of the JV’s [joint venture’s] investments.”

A photo dated Aug. 1, 2017, shows a handwritten flowchart of the ownership of β€œHudson West” split 50/50 between two entities ultimately controlled by Hunter Biden and someone identified as β€œChairman.”

According to a report on Biden’s overseas business dealings released last month by Sens. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), a company called Hudson West III opened a line of credit in September 2017.

Credit cards issued against the account were used by Hunter, his uncle James Biden and James’ wife, Sara Biden, to purchase more than $100,000 β€œworth of extravagant items, including airline tickets and multiple items at Apple Inc. stores, pharmacies, hotels and restaurants,” the report said.

Biden’s email was sent to Gongwen Dong, whom the Wall Street Journal in October 2018 tied to the purchase by Ye-linked companies of two luxury Manhattan apartments that cost a total on $83 million.

Dong, who owns a sprawling mansion in Great Neck, LI, has been identified in reports as CFO of the Kam Fei Group, an investment firm based in Hong Kong.

The documents obtained by The Post also include an β€œAttorney Engagement Letter” executed in September 2017 in which one of Ye’s top lieutenants, former Hong Kong government official Chi Ping Patrick Ho, agreed to pay Biden a $1 million retainer for β€œCounsel to matters related to US law and advice pertaining to the hiring and legal analysis of any US Law Firm or Lawyer.”

In December 2018, a Manhattan federal jury convicted Ho in two schemes to pay $3 million in bribes to high-ranking government officials in Africa for oil rights in Chad and lucrative business deals in Uganda.

Ho served a three-year prison sentence and was deported to Hong Kong in June.

Scott Peterson’s Conviction To Be Reexamined In Court

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – After receiving an overturned death sentence in the slaying of his pregnant wife, Scott Peterson is now heading back to San Mateo court looking to overturn his conviction over a potential issue in his trial’s jury selection, the California Superior Court said.

 

According to The Modesto Bee, the California Supreme Court made the ruling Tuesday following Peterson’s petition for habeas corpus, which was filed back in 2015.

 

Court records show there were 19 claims filed in Peterson’s petition to get his convictions overturned, 18 of which were denied as β€œmoot” and β€œon merits.”

 

The claim involving the potential juror issue was the first in the petition. The court order says, β€œJuror No. 7 committed prejudicial misconduct by not disclosing her prior involvement with other legal proceedings, including but not limited to being the victim of a crime.” The Modesto Bee reported that the juror was a victim of a crime while she was pregnant and feared for the life of her unborn child.

 

The details of this case resurfacing once again are frustrating for jurors who want it to be over.

Hunter Biden introduced his father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, to a top executive at a Ukrainian energy firm less than a year before the elder Biden pressured government officials in Ukraine into firing a prosecutor who was investigating the company, according to emails obtained by The Post.

The never-before-revealed meeting is mentioned in a message of appreciation that Vadym Pozharskyi, an adviser to the board of Burisma, allegedly sent Hunter Biden on April 17, 2015, about a year after Hunter joined the Burisma board at a reported salary of up to $50,000 a month.

β€œDear Hunter, thank you for inviting me to DC and giving an opportunity to meet your father and spent [sic] some time together. It’s realty [sic] an honor and pleasure,” the email reads.

An earlier email from May 2014 also shows Pozharskyi, reportedly Burisma’s No. 3 exec, asking Hunter for β€œadvice on how you could use your influence” on the company’s behalf.

The blockbuster correspondence β€” which flies in the face of Joe Biden’s claim that he’s β€œnever spoken to my son about his overseas business dealings” β€” is contained in a massive trove of data recovered from a laptop computer.

The computer was dropped off at a repair shop in Biden’s home state of Delaware in April 2019, according to the store’s owner.

Other material extracted from the computer includes a raunchy, 12-minute video that appears to show Hunter, who’s admitted struggling with addiction problems, smoking crack while engaged in a sex act with an unidentified woman, as well as numerous other sexually explicit images.

The customer who brought in the water-damaged MacBook Pro for repair never paid for the service or retrieved it or a hard drive on which its contents were stored, according to the shop owner, who said he tried repeatedly to contact the client.

The shop owner couldn’t positively identify the customer as Hunter Biden, but said the laptop bore a sticker from the Beau Biden Foundation, named after Hunter’s late brother and former Delaware attorney general.

Photos of a Delaware federal subpoena given to The Post show that both the computer and hard drive were seized by the FBI in December, after the shop’s owner says he alerted the feds to their existence.

But before turning over the gear, the shop owner says, he made a copy of the hard drive and later gave it to former Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s lawyer, Robert Costello.

Steve Bannon, former adviser to President Trump, told The Post about the existence of the hard drive in late September and Giuliani provided The Post with a copy of it on Sunday.

Less than eight months after Pozharskyi thanked Hunter Biden for the introduction to his dad, the then-vice president admittedly pressured Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk into getting rid of Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin by threatening to withhold a $1 billion US loan guarantee during a December 2015 trip to Kiev.

β€œI looked at them and said: I’m leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor is not fired, you’re not getting the money,” Biden infamously bragged to the Council on Foreign Relations in 2018.

Shokin has said that at the time of his firing, in March 2016, he’d made β€œspecific plans” to investigate Burisma that β€œincluded interrogations and other crime-investigation procedures into all members of the executive board, including Hunter Biden.”

Joe Biden has insisted that the US wanted Shokin removed over corruption concerns, which were shared by the European Union.

Meanwhile, an email dated May 12, 2014 β€” shortly after Hunter Biden joined the Burisma board β€” shows Pozharskyi attempting to get him to use his political leverage to help the company.

The message had the subject line β€œurgent issue” and was also sent to Hunter Biden’s business partner, Devon Archer, who also sat on the Burisma board at the time.

Pozharskyi said that β€œthe representatives of new authorities in power tend to quite aggressively approach N. Z. unofficially with the aim to obtain cash from him.”

N.Z. isn’t identified in the email but appears to be a reference to Burisma founder Mykola Zlochevsky, whose first name is a Ukrainian version of β€œNicholas.”

When the alleged shakedown failed, β€œthey proceeded with concrete actions” in the form of β€œone or more pretrial proceedings,” Pozharskyi wrote.

β€œWe urgently need your advice on how you could use your influence to convey a message / signal, etc .to stop what we consider to be politically motivated actions,” he added.

Hunter Biden responded by saying he was with Archer in Doha, Qatar, and asked for more information about β€œthe formal (if any) accusations being made against Burisma.”

β€œWho is ultimately behind these attacks on the company? Who in the current interim government could put an end to such attacks?” he added.

The exchange came the same day that Burisma announced it had expanded its board of directors by adding Hunter Biden, who was put in charge of its β€œlegal unit and will provide support for the Company among international organizations,” according to a news release that’s since been scrubbed from Burisma’s website.

Hunter Biden actually joined the board in April 2014, according to multiple reports.

His lawyer said last year that Hunter was β€œnot a member of the management team,” adding, β€œAt no time was Hunter in charge of the company’s legal affairs.”

About four months after Hunter Biden’s correspondence with Pozharskyi, Archer forwarded Hunter Biden an email chain with the subject line β€œtax raise impact on Burisma production,” which included Pozharskyi saying that the Ukrainian cabinet had submitted new tax legislation to the country’s parliament.

β€œIf enacted, this law would kill the entire private gas production sector in the bud,” Pozharskyi wrote.

In the Sept. 24, 2014, email, Pozharskyi also said he was β€œgoing to share this information with the US embassy here in Kyiv, as well as the office of Mr Amos Hochstein in the States.”

At the time, Hochstein was the State Department’s newly appointed special envoy and coordinator for international energy Β­affairs.

In December 2017, the Naftogaz Group, Ukraine’s state-owned energy company, announced that Hochstein had joined the company as an independent director, but on Monday he announced his Β­resignation.

β€œThe company has been forced to spend endless amounts of time combating political pressure and efforts by oligarchs to enrich themselves through questionable transactions,” Hochstein wrote in an op-ed published by the Kyiv Post.

In addition to denying that’s he’s spoken to Hunter Biden about his overseas business dealings, Joe Biden has repeatedly denied any conflict of interest or wrongdoing by either of them involving Β­Burisma.

Last February, he got testy during an appearance on NBC’s β€œToday” show when co-host Savannah Guthrie questioned whether it was β€œwrong for [Hunter] to take that position, knowing that it was really because that company wanted access to you.”

Key battleground states don't require signature-matching on mail-in ballots

 

Some signature-match rules have been struck down; others repealed by election officials.

 

Election rules in multiple key battleground states permit voters to submit mail-in and absentee ballots without having their signatures checked to ensure the vote is valid.

 

Five states that have historically been competitive in presidential races β€” North Carolina, Iowa, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire β€” do not require signature-matching for mailed voting forms.

 

In some cases, state officials have explicitly codified that rule. In August, Karen Bell, the executive director of the North Carolina State Board of Elections, wrote in a memo to all local county boards that a voter's siagnture "shall not be compared with the voter's signature on file because this is not required by North Carolina law."

 

"County boards shall accept the voter's signature on the container-return envelope if it appears to be made by the voter," she continued, "meaning the signature on the envelope appears to be the name of the voter and not some other person."

 

"Absent clear evidence to the contrary," she added, "the county board shall presume that the voter's signature is that of the voter, even if the signature is illegible."

 

In other cases, signature-match rules have been struck down by jurists. Judges in New Hampshire and Iowa in recent years both struck down provisions of state laws mandating signature-match policies for absentee ballots.

 

In New Hampshire in 2018, a judge struck down a state law ordering election officials to match a voter's signature on the application for a mail-in ballot with the voter's signature on an affidavit accompanying the ballot itself.

 

"[T]he current process for rejecting voters due to a signature mismatch fails to guarantee basic fairness," the ruling states. "Such discretion [in signature verification] becomes constitutionally intolerable once other factors are taken into account: the natural variations in voters' signatures combined with the absence of training and functional standards on handwriting analysis, and the lack of any review process or compliance measures."

 

The ruling suggested election officials could institute a policy of reaching out to voters regarding disputed ballots in order to give them a chance to rectify the errors.

 

In Iowa last year, meanwhile, a district court judge struck down a portion of a state election law which mandated that a voter's affidavit signature match his or her signature on record with the state. The judge struck down that rule both under the Iowa constitution and on procedural due process grounds.

 

And in Wisconsin, the state's website declares that "election inspectors are not required … to compare the signature [of a voter] to any other record."

 

"Voters should be directed to sign using their normal signature as they would sign any other official document and election inspectors should indicate the line number on which the voter is to sign," the state says.

 

"The law does not require voter signatures to be legible," the rule continues.

In his first lengthy public interview since pleading guilty to federal charges in Robert Mueller's now-discredited Trump-Russia collusion probe, Rick Gates slammed that investigation in blunt and unequivocal terms, calling it "an absolute travesty of justice" that "should never happen to any president or any American citizen" ever again.

 

Gates, who served in President Trump's 2016 campaign and later plead guilty to conspiracy and false statement charges related to his work in Ukraine, said in an interview on the latest episode of the John Solomon Reports podcast that his experience taught him "the way our justice system can be weaponized against so many different people."

 

The former political consultant stated bluntly that the tactics used by the Mueller investigation indicated that "there was no question that they were trying to get to the president."

 

Gates suggested the investigation itself was largely political, an affair in which Mueller was reportedly little more than a figurehead.

 

"Robert Mueller was literally nonexistent during my almost 1,000 hours of cooperation with his office," Gates told John Solomon. "And it wasn't just that he was nonexistent in his physical presence … He was rarely mentioned in any of the interviews. There was no discussion of needing, you know, to talk to Bob Mueller, or anything by the prosecutors."

 

Instead, Gates said, the investigation seemed to be run largely by Andrew Weissmann. A former FBI general counsel and former chief of the criminal fraud division at the Justice Department, Weissmann joined Mueller, his old boss at the FBI, as his key lieutenant in the special counsel investigation.

 

"He seemed to be calling the shots," Gates said. "He seemed to be leading the charge."

 

Weissmann, it became known last month, was among the numerous agents whose phones were allegedly accidentally wiped before being surrendered to the DOJ inspector general's office. Gates in his interview referred to the investigator as "partisan."

 

Gates, who was sentenced to 45 days in prison on charges of lying to the FBI β€” offenses that were ultimately unrelated to the now-debunked Trump-Russia conspiracy theory β€” urged listeners to refrain from simply "mov[ing] on" from the controversy and scandal surrounding the Mueller investigation.

 

"[We could] actually stop and think what all this has done, not just to our country, but how our adversaries have used our own device in this against us," he said.

 

"This is not just, you know, one or two bad apples, inside the DOJ or the FBI," he stressed. "It is clear that it is a group of people that felt the president should not be president, and they had a better sense of how the country needed to be led, than the over 60 million people that duly elected Donald Trump president."

 

He further argued against anger and hatred as a response to the affair. "Hatred corrodes the container that carries it," Gates added, quoting former Wyoming Republican Sen. Alan Simpson.

 

"I really do think that we have an opportunity here to learn," he said, "if we allow ourselves to do that."

DENVER (AP) β€” A former longshot Idaho gubernatorial candidate was indicted Tuesday in the murder of Jonelle Matthews, a 12-year-old Colorado girl whose disappearance after a holiday concert in 1984 was a mystery for decades. Her former neighbor Steve D. Pankey was charged with murder, kidnapping and other counts. He was arrested Monday at his Idaho home and being held without bail as he awaited extradition to Colorado, officials said.

Jonelle died from a single gunshot wound to her forehead, Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke said. Her remains went undiscovered until 2019.

 

Jonelle's family searched fruitlessly for years as her picture was printed on milk cartons during a national missing-children campaign in the 1980s. β€œAlways in the back of your mind you might have a little bit of of hope,” said Jennifer Mogensen, her sister. β€œWe're extremely grateful we're getting this next step toward justice.” Mogensen was a few years older, and she doesn't remember Pankey.

 

In the decades since he lived in Colorado, he has run as a Constitution Party candidate for Idaho governor in 2014 and in the Republican primary in 2018. It's the same year authorities said he became a person of interest in the girl's death. He did not immediately return phone or email messages Tuesday from The Associated Press. But last week told the Times-News in Twin Falls, Idaho, that he was being framed in the case. He said his family had few connections to Jonelle or her family.

 

The two families did worship at the same church in Greeley, Colorado, and Pankey had made statements to police revealing β€œintimate knowledge about the commission of the crime" that was not public information, Rourke said.

Pankey had watched children from the Jonelle’s middle school walk home, according to charging documents. In 2008, his former wife heard him say at his son’s funeral: β€œI hope God didn’t allow this to happen because of Jonelle Matthews," prosecutors wrote. Jonelle disappeared on Dec. 20, 1984, after being dropped home by a friend and the friend’s father. She was last seen at 8 p.m., entering the ranch-style home where she lived with her father, Jim; mother, Gloria; and sister. But when her father returned from her older sister's basketball game an hour later, Jonelle was gone.

The case came to the attention of then-President Ronald Reagan as his administration launched a national effort to find missing children. Her picture was printed on milk cartons across the U.S. as part of a project by the National Child Safety Council. β€œFor over three decades, the disappearance of Jonelle Matthews has left our community with many unanswered questions and a void that has not been filled. With the arrest of Steve Pankey … some of these questions are starting to be answered,” said Greeley police department Chief Mark Jones. Jonelle was considered missing for more than 30 years until workers digging a pipeline in July 2019 discovered human remains matching her dental records in a rural area southeast of Greeley, a city about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Denver. Police then labeled her death a homicide.

 

Pankey has been a person of interest in the case, and last year he contacted the Idaho Statesman to tell his side of the story, fearing a possible arrest. He told the newspaper that he was home with his then-wife the night Jonelle went missing, their car packed for an early-morning trip the next day to visit family in California. They took the trip and returned home six days later in 1984, Pankey said, and he heard the news of a missing child on the radio. The ex-wife told prosecutors the trip was unexpected. On the way home, Pankey β€œuncharacteristically listened to the radio, searching for news accounts of Jonelle’s disappearance,” according to the indictment. Steven Pankey has been charged with the death of a 12-year-old Colorado girl who vanished in 1984, authorities said on Tuesday.

YouTube launched a new crackdown on QAnon videos on Thursday, dealing another major setback to the pro-Trump conspiracy movement one week after Facebook launched its own purge of QAnon accounts.

 

In its announcement, YouTube said it would delete β€œcontent that targets an individual or group with conspiracy theories that have been used to justify real-world violence.”

 

That description, the site notes, would apply to QAnon, which the FBI considers a source of potential domestic terrorism. QAnon believers have been charged with a number of crimes that appear to be inspired by their support of the conspiracy theory, including two murders, a terrorist, and child abductions.

 

β€œToday we're further expanding both our hate and harassment policies to prohibit content that targets an individual or group with conspiracy theories that have been used to justify real-world violence,” YouTube said in a statement. β€œOne example would be content that threatens or harrasses someone by suggesting they are complicit in one of these harmful conspiracies, such as QAnon or Pizzagate.”

 

It’s not clear how many videos will be deleted under the new policy, which YouTube plans to start enforcing today. But the prohibition on alleging that people or groups are involved in the cabal-like conspiracy sketched out by QAnon could result in a massive purge of QAnon videos, although it’s not clear how prevalent QAnon content is on the site.

 

The new YouTube policy doesn’t qualify as an official QAnon ban, but YouTube expects that it will drastically impact the QAnon community on the site. An earlier YouTube crackdown in 2019 resulted in tens of thousands of QAnon videos being deleted, while a change to the site's algorithms caused recommendations pushing people to QAnon channels to plunge, according to the platform.

Man charged with setting four wildfires in Northern California forest

 

A Northern California man has been charged with serial arson in connection with four wildfires in Shasta-Trinity National Forest, authorities announced Wednesday.

 

Eric Michael Smith, 38, of Redding, is accused of setting the fires in June and July in the forest in Shasta County using a β€œvirtually untraceable cigarette lighter or pen torch,” according to a statement from the U.S. attorney’s office.

 

All four fires were quickly contained without causing any major damage or injuries but one shut down a freeway, authorities said.

 

Smith was arrested during an investigation into wildfires that had occurred over the past two years near a forest road north of Shasta Lake.

 

U.S. Forest Service and state fire investigators used hidden motion-detection cameras to identify a car and plant a tracking device on it, according to court records cited by the Sacramento Bee.

 

On July 23, investigators saw Smith place wood and trash on a burning campfire and then drive away, court documents said.

 

Two days later, an arson fire flared in an area where Smith had been, according to the documents.

 

Smith was charged last week with four counts of setting fire to federal land. He is currently free on bond and it wasn’t immediately clear whether he had an attorney to speak on his behalf.

 

If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

 

The charges come as California faces dry, windy weather that poses an extreme fire danger in the north into Friday.

 

California already has seen record fires this year. More than 8,500 wildfires have burned more than 6,400 square miles (16,000 square kilometers) in California since the start of the year, most since mid-August. Thirty-one people have died, and more than 9,200 buildings have been destroyed.
