FBI probing whether emails in New York Post story about Hunter Biden are tied to Russian disinformation

 

WASHINGTON – Federal authorities are investigating whether a Russian influence operation was behind the disclosure of emails purporting to document the Ukrainian and Chinese business dealings of Hunter Biden, the son of Democratic nominee Joe Biden, a person briefed on the matter said Friday.

 

The FBI's examination is tied to the New York Post's reporting this week on the contents of a computer hard drive it obtained from President Donald Trump's personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani.

 

According to newspaper's account, the computer data had been provided to Giuliani by the owner of a Delaware computer repair shop where a laptop had been left for service last year but was never claimed by the customer.

 

The FBI's review comes after U.S. intelligence officials warned last month that Russia has been working to denigrate Joe Biden in advance of next month's presidential election.

Chinese CEO Of OKEx Crypto Exchange β€˜Arrested’ Again; Whales Bail

OKEx users found out that they couldn’t cash their chips early Friday as the founder of the cryptocurrency exchange was β€˜arrested’.

 

Mingxing Xu, also known as Star Xu, was reportedly being questioned by police, Chinese news agency Caixin reported today. The news from Caixin came shortly after OKEx issued an β€œAnnouncement on Suspension of Withdrawals ” of crypto assets on its platform, meaning no one could get their money out. The company’s digital coin, OKB, fell nearly 11%.

 

Some of the company’s key personnel are said to be cooperating with an investigation into Star Xu and that shuttered accounts as of 11:00 am in Hong Kong. The company said that "other functions of OKEx are guaranteed to be normal" and "asset security is not affected."

 

Hong Kong-based crypto sources said that Xu may be being held to help an investigation into the backdoor listing of OK Group in Hong Kong in 2019 and is not related to the exchange's withdrawal issue.

 

Caixin also reported that Xu had been arrested at least a week ago and had not appeared at the company for many days. Mysteries abound. He was also part of a fraud investigation in 2018.

 

Looking at this from a the big picture: what does this mean for the industry in China?

 

The OKEx case is a clear reminder for the blockchain industry in China that it needs to be totally decentralized. It proves that only when there are no key owners of an organization (such as a crypto exchange) can it be immune from political influence and interference. Some industry insiders see decentralization solutions benefiting from problems such as this, as it is a reminder that so-called DeFi projects could be scaled to industries, other than finance, in order to protect against crises exemplified by today’s OKEx withdrawal ban.

 

Some big crypto traders are moving on the actions out of OKEx. Some $56,557,316 was transferred from OKEx to Binance today. According to data by Glassnode, a total of 10,000 BTC (around $113 million) was withdrawn in two large batches in the past 48 hours.

 

β€œChinese traders are still able to use other trading platforms, including decentralized exchanges, so temporary difficulties with one exchange will not have a significant impact on those traders,” says Alexandr Denisov, CEO and co-founder of Deep Quant, a Russian software company specializing in algorithmic trading of cryptocurrencies. They are currently looking to partner with OKEx.

 

For the most part, people don’t see this as a death knell to OKEx yet, or a shot across the bow of China and Hong Kong’s crypto market.

 

β€œWe don’t know yet if they did anything unlawful at OKEx,” says Kirill Bezverhi, CEO of Moscow based FinPR Agency, which works with blockchain and new tech companies in Russia. β€œI’m not sure that this is a sign that China has something against blockchain. In the short term, we can really see the outflow of deposits from the Chinese crypto exchanges today, simply because people are trying to reinsure themselves and protect their assets.”

 

OKEx is one of China's three biggest exchanges, with more than $6 billion in daily trading volume. Some 1.1% of the circulating Bitcoin supply is held in OKEx cryptocurrency wallets.

Millions of Americans are entering poverty amid pandemic as stimulus runs out

 

Millions of Americans have been thrown into poverty as government aid dried up in the last five months, according to a pair of studies, and those ranks will likely swell without more relief on the way.

 

β€œPoverty is rising in the United States,” Zach Parolin, a researcher at the Columbia University's Center on Poverty and Social Policy told Yahoo Finance (video above). β€œMore families, once again, are struggling to put food on the table, struggling to provide for their families at a time when we have the means to be able to help them out.” Eight million more Americans fell below the poverty threshold since May, a study by Columbia University found. A similar study from the University of Chicago and Notre Dame estimated 6 million Americans entered poverty for the same period.

 

Without further government intervention, more Americans could follow, facing food insecurity, utility shutoffs, and even homelessness. Poverty in the U.S. actually declined at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, thanks largely to two provisions in the CARES Act: stimulus checks and the extra $600 in weekly unemployment benefits.

 

Since then, there has been no second round of checks, and the extra unemployment benefits expired at the end of July. The Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) program β€” enacted by the president to make up some of the difference in unemployment β€” mostly expired in September, leaving unemployed workers with only their regular state benefits that replace much less of their wages. β€œThat's just a lot of money that they're going to have to do without,” Bruce Meyer, a University of Chicago economist, told Yahoo Money. β€œIt means people are going to be cutting back on what they can.”

 

While the funding provided under the $2.2 trillion CARES Act was the largest economic stimulus package in history, its effects won’t last long enough to support those in financial hardship, especially when the job market and the economy haven’t recovered.

 

The unemployment rate remains elevated at 7.9% β€” the highest since 2012 β€” while 25 million Americans receive some type of unemployment insurance, according to the Labor Department.

 

Any benefits that out-of-work Americans were able to sock away earlier are evaporating. Jobless workers more than doubled their liquid savings between March and July, according to a new study by the JPMorgan Chase Institute, but they spent two-thirds of those accumulated savings in August alone. Unemployed workers also pulled back on spending, recording a 14% drop in August after a 22% increase when they got the extra $600 in benefits, the JPMorgan Chase Institute study found. This will likely hurt aggregate spending, according to Greig. The fading effect of the stimulus comes as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin continue talks for a bipartisan stimulus deal. But disagreements on price tag and key provisions, lack of GOP support, and the proximity of the election all lower the prospects of a deal before the election.

The real issue behind 5g is not so much the electromagnetic radiation but the ability for it to geolocate people. Every 5g tower has a unique IP address with its own set of IP addresses within that 0/255 range. Each 5g tower can be identified and located by it’s IP address.

Sony claims the update is necessary to enforce β€œsafety and moderation” standards and prevent harassment, yet the actual agenda is obviously to police political speech and prevent criticism of far-left groups like Black Lives Matter.

Any more on this disturbing image? I can come up with a couple ideas.

Thailand protesters vow to continue with daily rallies

 

On a wet but unusually cool Saturday afternoon, Thailand's peaceful young protesters ran circles around authorities attempting to enforce a ban on public assemblies of more than five people.

 

A supplemental emergency decree on Thursday morning led to the deployment of riot police, water cannons and tear gas on Friday night against an estimated 4,000 protesters. Arrest warrants were also issued for 12 student leaders who were still at large. Tensions have risen after the Friday crackdown, fueling further unrest with the protesters vowing to stage daily protests demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha and his cabinet, constitutional changes drafted by representatives of the people, and reform of the monarchy under the constitution.

Asked by reporters on Friday whether he would yield to protest demands and resign, Prayuth said, "No, I won't …What wrong did I do?" The prime minister said all measures to curb the protests would respect international norms regarding civil disorder. An attempt to thwart the protester's mobility today by suspending the entire BTS SkyTrain mass transit system from 3 p.m. to midnight failed as the youngsters took to motorcycle taxis and other means of transport or simply walked to get around the city.

 

The United Front of Thammasat and Demonstration had earlier asked protesters to gather along the BTS system: "All stations have become assembly points for demonstrations," it announced.

 

Roads in the financial, business and retail districts were blocked early in the afternoon by police, who evidently presumed the protesters would be converging in one place again for a main rally.

 

The fourth day in a row of protests in the capital had been planned for 4 p.m. Organizers announced just 15 minutes ahead of time that these would occur in outlying parts of the city: the major Lat Phrao intersection to the north; Udom Suk, another key intersection on the southeast edge of the capital; and Wong Wien Yai, a large roundabout in Thonburi west across the Chao Phraya river. Opposition parties issued a joint statement in the morning condemning the excessive use of force in dispersing protesters at the Patumwan intersection on Friday. "These are our children, our future generation, who have come to express their opinions with the aim of seeing our country move forward in the right direction," they said. Joining this clamor for the resignation of Prayuth and his government today was Yingluck Shinawatra, the prime minister whose caretaker government he toppled as army chief in a coup in 2014. When considering the intentions of international students who choose to study abroad, there are undoubtedly few institutions that are as perpetually over-subscribed as the colleges that grace New York City.

The centrality of New York to popular culture means that an exploitation of its global brand is widely encouraged by the city’s top universities, and with good reason, New York is very much an archetype of the cosmopolitan city; boasting world-renowned sporting franchises, a bustling music scene, and a cultural heritage to rival anywhere else in the world. Really, why would anyone want to study anywhere else? At least, that’s what I think as I embark upon a year on exchange at St John’s University from my home university in the United Kingdom.

The international program at St John’s is vast, and, as was reported exclusively by The Torch, still growing. Students from all corners of the globe flock to St John’s; Brazilians, Chinese, Swedes, Indians and South Koreans are just some of the nationalities that make up St John’s rapidly diversifying student body. The cultural appeal of being at a university only half an hour from the bright lights of Manhattan is obvious, but what else brings students from all over the world to this university?

According to Benjamin Roberts, from Wales in the United Kingdom, the professionalism of St John’s staff that was evident from as early as the application stage was a big factor.

β€œThe enthusiasm that those running the international program had for St John’s shone through right from the beginning, and that really put a positive face on the college in comparison to the other institutions I was considering,” said Roberts.

This is a sentiment echoed by many, and one that was confirmed immediately upon arrival. Offices such as β€˜Global Studies’ and β€˜International Student Services’ have been a great help not simply in an administrative sense, but also in regards to orientation and guidance on a personal level. While it is, of course, an incredibly exciting experience, studying abroad can be a daunting prospect, and St John’s goes out of its way to ensure a smooth and stress-free transition into the new environment.

Away from the formal side of things, St John’s has exhibited a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and huge credit for that must go to those who have put on the Week of Welcome and Spirit Week events. BBQs, activities fairs and sporting events have delivered a crash course in St John’s student life, and, for international students, has ensured rapid assimilation into the St John’s community.Jitarth Jadeja, an exchange student from ACU in Sydney, Australia,has been extremely grateful for the numerous welcome events available to international students.

The only way in which one can truly characterize St John’s though, is in its diversity and eclectic nature; there really is something for everyone. This is the story of an American patriot, an honorable man, John Paul Mac Issac, who tried to do the right thing and is now being unfairly and maliciously slandered as an agent of foreign intelligence, specifically Russia.

 

John Paul Mac Issac is not an agent or spy for anyone. He is his own man. How do I know? I have known his dad for more than 20 years. I’ve known John Paul’s dad as Mac. Mac is a decorated Vietnam Veteran, who flew gunships in Vietnam. And he continued his military service with an impeccable record until he retired as an Air Force Colonel. The crews of those gunships have an annual reunion and Mac usually takes John Paul along, who volunteers his computer and video skills to record and compile the stories of those brave men who served their country in a difficult war.

 

This story is very simple–Hunter Biden dropped off three computers with liquid damage at a repair shop in Wilmington, Delaware on April 12, 2019. The owner, John Paul Mac Issac, examined the three and determined that one was beyond recovery, one was okay and the data on the hard drive of the third could be recovered. Hunter signed the service ticket and John Paul Mac Issac repaired the hard drive and downloaded the data. During this process he saw some disturbing images and a number of emails that concerned Ukraine, Burisma, China and other issues. With the work completed, Mr. Mac Issac prepared an invoice, sent it to Hunter Biden and notified him that the computer was ready to be retrieved. Hunter did not respond. In the ensuing four months (May, June, July and August), Mr. Mac Issac made repeated efforts to contact Hunter Biden. Biden never answered and never responded. More importantly, Biden stiffed John Paul Mac Issac–i.e., he did not pay the bill.

 

When the manufactured Ukraine crisis surfaced in August 2019, John Paul realized he was sitting on radioactive material that might be relevant to the investigation. After conferring with his father, Mac and John Paul decided that Mac would take the information to the FBI office in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mac walked into the Albuquerque FBI office and spoke with an agent who refused to give his name. Mac explained the material he had, but was rebuffed by the FBI. He was told basically, get lost. This was mid-September 2019.

 

Two months passed and then, out of the blue, the FBI contacted John Paul Mac Issac. Two FBI agents from the Wilmington FBI office–Joshua Williams and Mike Dzielak–came to John Paul’s business. He offered immediately to give them the hard drive, no strings attached. Agents Williams and Dzielak declined to take the device.

 

Two weeks later, the intrepid agents called and asked to come and image the hard drive. John Paul agreed but, instead of taking the hard drive or imaging the drive, they gave him a subpoena. It was part of a grand jury proceeding but neither agent said anything about the purpose of the grand jury. John Paul complied with the subpoena and turned over the hard drive and the computer.

 

In the ensuing months, starting with the impeachment trial of President Trump, he heard nothing from the FBI and knew that none of the evidence from the hard drive had been shared with President Trump’s defense team.

 

The lack of action and communication with the FBI led John Paul to make the fateful decision to contact Rudy Giuliani’s office and offer a copy of the drive to the former mayor. We now know that Rudy accepted John Paul’s offer and that Rudy’s team shared the information with the New York Post.

 

John Paul Mac Issac is not responsible for the emails, images and videos recovered from Hunter Biden’s computer. He was hired to do a job, he did the job and submitted an invoice for the work. Hunter Biden, for some unexplained reason, never responded and never asked for the computer. But that changed last Tuesday, October 13, 2020. A person claiming to be Hunter Biden’s lawyer called John Paul Mac Issac and asked for the computer to be returned. Too late. That horse had left the barn and was with the FBI.

 

John Paul, acting under Delaware law, understood that Hunter’s computer became the property of his business 90 days after it had been abandoned…

Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking him for a king.

He said, "This is what the king who will reign over you will do: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.

Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.

He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.

He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants.

15

He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants.

16

Your menservants and maidservants and the best of your cattle [2] and donkeys he will take for his own use.

17

He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves.

18

When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, and the LORD will not answer you in that day."

But the people refused to listen to Samuel. "No!" they said. "We want a king over us.

20

Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles."

21

When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the LORD.

The LORD answered, "Listen to them and give them a king." Then Samuel said to the men of Israel, "Everyone go back to his town."
