Disease

One typical factor that can cause a person's eyes to change color is disease. This occurs because the chemical composition of the eye’s variable lens can change over the course of time as proteins are produced in different proportions than they used to be. These chemical changes can cause the lens to take on a yellow appearance, reducing the lens’ transparency and causing it to become somewhat opaque.

Tiegen departed Twatter do I have Hollywood on my mind. I’ve been working from home a lot, thanks to the CHINA VIRUS, so I got in the habit of streaming “noise” in the background while I’m doing some of the more mundane tasks that I have to do each day.

 

Last year I decided to stream the entire series of L.A. Law, from Season 01, Episode 01 all the way to the finale, which was Season 08, Episode 22, filmed in 1994, I believe.

 

Over the course of the series we’ve all come to regard the main partner of the show, Leland McKenzie, as the kindly, wise, experienced professional, and we have grown to value his stable, calm demeanor. Well, in the penultimate (second-to-last) episode his doctor tells him his biopsy came back “positive,” but we don’t know more than that. Wife and I are early 40s. Kids 12 and 14.

 

I haven't had a vaccine of any type since 1997. Wifeanon (a nurse at local hospital) hasn't missed a vax in her entire life (including yearly flu) as Grandpa was a doctor, and that was their yearly Thanksgiving tradition. They'd have family get together, give out the shots to all the fam, and then have Turkey Day, and be good to go by Christmas.

 

She did not get the vax because she understands that you cannot have a vaccine be safe and efficacious within a year. It's impossible (Operation Warp Speed = science fiction!). She decided she'd wait a few years, and maybe get it later. Then wifeanon got the COVID, and brought it home. Ran through the house:

Her: Fever went away, came back, went away and came back again. She's still suffering from fatigue over a month later, and it took her two trips to the doctor and antibiotics/steroids to kick it.

Me: Didn't take shit, and barely remembered to take vitamins when needed. I could actually feel the difference vascular wise (sneezs/coughs would resonate in my muscles during extreme contractions). Sometimes I get a little fatigued, but whatever; I have an office job. I did get a nasty infection in my elbow (longer story) that took two rounds of antibiotics to get rid of. Never had that happen before, so obviously COVID affects your immune system big time.

Kids: No problems whatsoever.

Sixty-four bodies found in shipping container in Mozambique

 

CNN)The bodies of 64 male migrants were discovered Tuesday in a sealed shipping container at a checkpoint in Tete, Mozambique, according to the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM).

 

In a statement released Tuesday night, IOM confirmed that 14 survivors were rescued by local authorities and are being treated at a local hospital.

The survivors told local authorities that they were Ethiopians headed to South Africa.

The truck driver and his assistant, both Mozambicans, were arrested, provincial immigration spokesman Amelia Direito told AFP.

She said the driver told police he had been promised 30,000 meticais (about $500, 460 euros) to transport the men.

Police have launched a manhunt for "the intermediary who facilitated the illegal entry of the Ethiopians into the country," Direito added.

Temperatures in Tete have been above 90 degrees Fahrenheit this week.

None of the men were carrying identification, and IOM is working to provide assistance to the survivors.

South Africa is home to more than 4 million migrants and close to 300,000 asylum seekers and refugees according to the latest U.N. statistics.

High tide passed Wednesday evening and the giant 20,388 teu Ever Given still has not moved. Twisted starboard, its 399 m hull may be connecting continents, but at the same time it is halting global trade, with more than 140 ships now delayed and garnering more mainstream press for shipping than anything else has for months.

 

Early indications from the Suez Canal Authority that the giant ship would be shifted within two days have now proven to be wide of the mark, with the CEO of the parent of the Dutch salvage firm overseeing the operation warning the vessel could be stuck for weeks.

 

The International Chamber of Shipping estimates that $3bn worth of cargoes pass through the 152-year-old waterway a day.

 

The Ever Given, which ship agency GAC said lost power Tuesday morning, ploughing into a bank of the canal, remains wedged on one of the most important shipping arteries in the world despite many tugs, diggers and dredgers being deployed to refloat it.

 

A team of eight from SMIT Salvage flew into Egypt this morning and are inspecting the ship and the surrounding canal area.

 

Peter Berdowski, the CEO of SMIT’s parent, Royal Boskalis Westminster, was interviewed on Dutch state TV last night. He told Nieuwsuur, a Dutch current affairs television program, “The more secure the ship is, the longer an operation will take. It can take days to weeks.”

 

He also pointed out that bringing in all the necessary equipment needed for the refloating operation could take time.

 

“This is not an Amsterdam-Rhine Canal where you have the same depth over the entire width. You are dealing with an avenue in the middle that is up to 25 meters deep, but soon after that it goes to 15 meters, to 11 meters, and then even less to the ends. The ship is 15.7 meters deep. Especially at the front the ship is a meter on the slope,” Berdowski told Nieuwsuur, describing the Ever Given’s current predicament as being akin to a very heavy whale on a beach.

 

As well as removing ballast water and fuel, the SMIT team will assess whether containers will need to be offloaded from the ship, a potentially time-consuming process.

 

“In our view the situation now looks unlikely to be heading for a swift resolution given that it is not a simple grounding,” analysts at Braemar ACM Shipbroking stated in an update to clients today.

 

Under normal circumstances an average of 52 vessels of all types goes through the Suez Canal per day.

 

According to the World Shipping Council, the maximum throughput of the canal is 106 vessels per day so if the waterway was shut for one day, the resultant queue could be cleared within the first opening day using the daily surplus capacity. If it was closed for two days, it would then take two additional days after re-opening to also clear the queue given that more vessels will arrive for normal transits every day.

 

Leth Agencies, a local port agent, tallied 71 vessels waiting at Suez Anchorage awaiting northbound transit as of midnight last night and a further 79 vessels awaiting southbound transit of which 34 are anchored at Great Bitter Lake and 45 at Port Said Outer Anchorage.

 

Ships behind the Ever Given in the canal are being reversed south back to Port Suez to free the channel. Authorities hope to do the same to the Ever Given when they can free it.

 

The huge vessel is operated by Evergreen from Taiwan and owned by Japan’s Shoei Kisen who today apologised for the “tremendous worry” that the accident has caused to the other vessels and their involved parties.

 

Shoei Kisen conceded the operation to move the ship will be “extremely difficult”.

 

The ship’s manager, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, insists the accident happened because of high winds, something backed up by vessel tracking of the accident (see below) which shows how the ships in the convoy behind the Ever Given moved erratically too, and were nearly involved in a collision.

 

The 2018-built Ever Given was involved in a collision two years ago, smashing into a ferry in Hamburg.

Hunter Biden may have committed a felony offense by lying on a background check before purchasing a gun, Politico reported on Thursday.

The US considered a proposal to use 520 nuclear bombs to carve out an alternative to the Suez Canal though Israel in the 1960s, according to a declassified memorandum.

 

The plan never came to fruition, but having an alternative waterway to the Suez Canal could have been useful today, with a cargo ship stuck in the narrow path and blocking one of the world's most vital shipping routes.

 

According to the 1963 memorandum, which was declassified in 1996, the plan would have relied on 520 nuclear bombs to carve out the waterway. The memo called for the "use of nuclear explosives for excavation of Dead Sea canal across the Negev desert."

 

The historian Alex Wellerstein called the plan a "modest proposal for the Suez Canal situation" on Twitter on Wednesday.

 

The memorandum was from the US Department of Energy-backed Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

 

It suggested that an "interesting application of nuclear excavation would be a sea-level canal 160 miles long across Israel."

 

Conventional methods of excavation would be "prohibitively expensive," the memo said. "It appears that nuclear explosives could be profitably applied to this situation."

 

The memo added that "such a canal would be a strategically valuable alternative to the present Suez Canal and would probably contribute greatly to economic development."

 

As part of the pricing model, the memorandum estimated that four 2-megaton devices would be needed for every mile, which Wellerstein calculated as meaning "520 nukes" or 1.04 gigatons of explosives, he tweeted.

 

One possible route the memorandum proposed stretched across the Negev desert in Israel, connecting the Mediterranean to the Gulf of Aqaba, opening access to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.

 

The laboratory noted that there were 130 miles of "virtually unpopulated desert wasteland, and are thus amenable to nuclear excavation methods."

 

The "crude preliminary investigation" suggested that using bombs to create a canal through Israel "appears to be within the range of technological feasibility," the memo said.

 

But the memo conceived that one problem, which the authors had not taken into consideration, might be "political feasibility, as it is likely that the Arab countries surrounding Israel would strongly object to the construction of such a canal."

 

The memo came as the US Atomic Energy Commission was investigating using "peaceful nuclear explosions" to dig out useful infrastructure, Forbes reported in 2018. There were also plans to use this method to dig out a canal in Central America, Forbes reported.

 

But the PNE project remained experimental, after the US found that 27 experiments with PNEs heavily irradiated the landscape. The Atomic Energy Commission was also abolished in 1974.

 

Meanwhile, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory still exists. According to its website, it is dedicated to "ensuring the safety, security and reliability of the nation's nuclear deterrent."

 

The 1963 memorandum had also come less than a decade after the Suez crisis, a conflict for the control of the strategic waterway which was a defining event in the Cold War.

This whole debacle is a result of a ship with far too much windage traveling too slowly for the rudder to have real effect. Once she started to swing there was no way to get her aligned with the channel again. Too little time available in such narrow waters to order a burst of speed to give some wash past the rudder. The management of the canal are to blame for not demanding a powerful tug ahead and astern in such wind conditions and now they have discovered their oversight and paying a steep price for their lapse of judgement.
