Russian Media: Summit a ‘Victory’ for Vladimir Putin over ‘Confused’ Biden

Both the Kremlin and Russian state media celebrated the meeting between Russian leader Vladimir Putin and President Joe Biden as a success on Thursday, particularly for Putin’s agenda and his hope to assert dominance on the world stage.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov – who had repeatedly batted down suggestions that the summit, held in Geneva on Wednesday, would yield substantive results for either world leader – dramatically changed his tune on Thursday, proclaiming, “Tremendous work was done.”

Putin and Biden agreed to restore ambassadors to their respective embassies, a major victory for Putin as, prior to a mass expulsion under former President Donald Trump in 2018, Russia used its embassy and consulates as espionage hubs and its “diplomats” as spies. This remains a common Russian practice around the world. Biden also agreed to support the Minsk agreements, a set of poorly executed deals nominally meant to end the Russia-fueled war in eastern Ukraine, which an “expert” told Russian news agency TASS represented a “major achievement” for Putin.

Biden received no significant concessions from Putin but insisted the summit was a success. Pressed by reporters, Biden admitted there was “no kumbaya moment” between the two leaders, then proceeded to berate reporters for asking “negative” questions. He later apologized for being a “wise guy.”

The two leaders, nonetheless, issued a brief joint statement following the meeting, celebrating that “even in periods of tension, [the two countries] are able to make progress on our shared goals of ensuring predictability in the strategic sphere, reducing the risk of armed conflicts and the threat of nuclear war.”

The statement applauded Biden’s concession of a five-year extension of the New START Treaty, which limits nuclear development. Evidence suggests Putin has repeatedly violated the treaty; former President Donald Trump refused to extend the treaty without including China.

Putin and Biden also promised to “embark together” on a “dialogue.”

“Even though this is a very short text, this is a joint statement on strategic stability after all,” Peskov, Putin’s spokesman, said in an interview on Russian radio on Thursday. “This is, perhaps, precisely what manifests special responsibility of our two countries both to our peoples, no matter how solemnly this may sound, and to the entire world.”

Peskov proclaimed the summit had ended “with a plus sign” and the results were “rather positive.” He told reporters after the summit, however, that Russia would not yet remove America from its list of “unfriendly” countries, as “there is no reason for that yet.”

“Agreements have not been reached, and agreements could not be reached, as no one set such tasks in the first place,” Peskov noted. He told reporters the meeting was fruitful because, regarding global cyberattacks, “it was emphasized that no one blames the Russian government, and no accusations were made against the Russian side.” He added, “This is very important. We can state that we have a very positive take on that.”

Contrary to Peskov’s declaration, significant evidence suggests that criminals in Russia, though not necessarily the Kremlin itself, orchestrated some of the most damaging cyberattacks in the world in recent memory.

Prior to the summit, Peskov told reporters it would not be “historic” and no one should “expect any breakthroughs,” a significant difference in his tone following the end of the conference.

Russian state-run media more transparently declared victory. The propaganda outlet Sputnik ran a headline Thursday reading, “Putin Comes Out Looking Strong, and Biden Looks Confused.” Russia Today (RT) claimed the summit “handed both leaders a victory” but offered markedly more evidence for a Putin win than a Biden win.

“For Putin, though, the fact that the meeting was set up in the first place was a success,” an RT analysis piece read. “For an American leader’s first foreign trip to be so dominated by discussion of Russia, and for the country’s president to get top billing for the European tour, is a sign that Moscow still has global political sway.”

“The Russian president also made it clear he wouldn’t take international criticisms lying down, and would give as good as he got on the issue of human rights,” RT added, referring to Putin’s post-summit press conference in which he offered unhinged ravings comparing the many killings and poisonings of his political enemies to alleged “secret CIA prisons” and claiming that political activists in the United States “get a bullet in the back of [their] neck[s].”

Climate Change Batters the West Before Summer Even Begins

A heat dome is baking Arizona and Nevada, where temperatures have soared past 115 degrees this week and doctors are warning that people can get third-degree burns from the sizzling asphalt.

At Lake Mead, which supplies water for 25 million people in three southwestern states and Mexico, water levels have plunged to their lowest point since the reservoir was filled in the 1930s. In California, farmers are abandoning their thirstiest crops to save others, and communities are debating whether to ration tap water.

In Texas, electricity grids are under strain as residents crank their air-conditioners, with utilities begging customers to turn off appliances to help avert blackouts. In Arizona, Montana and Utah, wildfires are blazing.

And it’s not even summer yet.

“We’re still a long way out from the peak of the wildfire season and the peak of the dry season,” said Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles. “Things are likely to get worse before they get better.”

Global warming, driven by the burning of fossil fuels, has been heating up and drying out the American West for years. Now the region is broiling under a combination of a drought that is the worst in two decades and a record-breaking heat wave.

“The Southwest is getting hammered by climate change harder than almost any other part of the country, apart from perhaps coastal cities,” said Jonathan Overpeck, a climate scientist at the University of Michigan. “And as bad as it might seem today, this is about as good as it’s going to get if we don’t get global warming under control.”

With temperatures expected to keep rising as nations struggle to rein in their planet-warming emissions, the Western United States will need to take difficult and costly measures to adapt. That includes redesigning cities to endure punishing heat, conserving water and engineering grids that don’t fail during extreme weather.

This month has offered glimpses of whether states and cities are up to that task and has shown they still have far to go.

From Montana to Southern California, much of the West is suffering from unusually high temperatures. Some 50 million Americans face heat-related warnings. Records have been tied or broken in places like Palm Springs, California, Salt Lake City and Billings, Montana.

As 115-degree temperatures cooked Phoenix’s Roosevelt Row Arts District on Tuesday, Timothy Medina, 58, was perched on a black metal platform 12 feet above the sidewalk, finishing the blue lettering of a sign for a coffee shop. “It’s brutal — that heat against the wall,” he said. “Let me take a quick swig of water.”

Home Depot Chartering Its Very Own Ship to Avoid Shipping Problems

How bad is the container shipping crisis? So bad that The Home Depot has chartered its own ship.

This isn’t a joke. Between soaring freight rates, a lack of ship and container capacity, and never-ending port congestion, the world’s largest home improvement retailer with $132 billion in sales last year has resorted to chartering its own ship that will be 100% dedicated to the company.

The Home Depot’s President and Chief Operating Officer Ted Decker made the revelation in a recent interview with CNBC, providing some insight as to why retail giant is taking the unusual step of chartering its very own ship for the very first time.

“We have a ship that’s solely going to be ours and it’s just going to go back and forth with 100% dedicated to Home Depot,” said Decker.

According to Decker in the interview, supply chain disruptions have been so bad that the Home Depot opted, at least in some cases, to use more expensive air freight to fly in higher value items from overseas and even is buying items on the spot market in order to keep inventories stocked.

While questions remain about where Home Depot would obtain the actual containers or how the ship will avoid congestion, Decker did indicate that the charter is set to kick off almost imminently next month. Details about the charter, such as rate, length, and with whom, were also not disclosed.

Whether or not this strategy will pay off for The Home Depot is highly uncertain, but given “unprecedented” COVID-driven disruptions are growing at south China ports, perhaps taking some extra precautions now might not be a bad idea.

Tulsa Man Sentenced for Abusive Sexual Contact with a Minor

A Tulsa man was sentenced today in federal court for sexually abusing a minor, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson.

U.S. District Judge Claire V. Eagan sentenced Oscar Manuel Cabrera-Westerheidy, 37, of Tulsa, to 11 years in federal prison followed by a lifetime of supervised release for abusive sexual contact with a minor under 12 years of age in Indian Country and abusive sexual contact with a minor between 12 and 16 years of age in Indian Country. The Court further recommended he receive drug abuse and sex offender treatment while in prison.

Cabrera-Westerheidy admitted that from January 2011 through August 2020, he sexually abused a child. The victim disclosed the abuse to a parent out of concern that the defendant was caring for other children.

The FBI and Tulsa Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chantelle D. Dial prosecuted the case. Ms.Dial is a prosecutor from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Washington. She volunteered to assist prosecution efforts here in the Northern District of Oklahoma due to increased jurisdictional responsibilities regarding crimes involving Native American victims or defendants and that occur within the Muscogee Nation and Cherokee Nation Reservations.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims. MIAMI — A little-known GOP candidate in one of Florida’s most competitive congressional seats was secretly recorded threatening to send “a Russian and Ukrainian hit squad” to a fellow Republican opponent to make her “disappear.”

During a 30-minute call with a conservative activist, William Braddock repeatedly warned the activist to not support GOP candidate Anna Paulina Luna in the Republican primary for a Tampa Bay-area congressional seat because he had access to assassins.

The seat is being vacated by Rep. Charlie Crist (D-Fla.), who is running for governor.

“I really don’t want to have to end anybody’s life for the good of the people of the United States of America,” Braddock said at one point in the conversation last week, according to the recording exclusively obtained by POLITICO. “That will break my heart. But if it needs to be done, it needs to be done. Luna is a f—ing speed bump in the road. She’s a dead squirrel you run over every day when you leave the neighborhood.”

After she made the recording just after midnight last Wednesday, she promptly turned it over to St. Petersburg, Fla., police and gave a heads-up to her friend Luna, who filed a petition for an injunction against Braddock. Luna and Olszewski each received a temporary restraining order against him last week. Braddock filed to run Monday.

In the recording, Braddock early in the call brought up the alleged assassins. He also made rambling statements about getting financial help from fellowFreemasonsor by somehow importing millions of dollars from Malta and Gibraltar.

“I have access to a hit squad, too, Ukrainians and Russians,” he said about three minutes into the call, adding “don’t get caught out in public supporting Luna. … Luna’s gonna go down and I hope it’s by herself.”

Braddock went on to explain that he didn’t think Luna could win in the general election. Luna, an Air Force veteran and former model who went on to become a conservative activist, won a crowded GOP primary in the state’s 13th Congressional District last year but lost the general election to Crist.

The 8-1 ruling authored by Justice Clarence Thomas reversed a lower court decision that had allowed the lawsuit, brought on behalf of former child slaves from Mali who worked at the farms, filed against the companies in 2005 to proceed.
