COVID-19 Cases, Hospitalizations Plummet in Southern US, Rise in Northern States

 

COVID-19 metrics in southern states like Florida have plummeted in recent weeks while rising in many northern states, including heavily vaccinated ones.

 

Confirmed COVID-19 cases in Mississippi, for instance, have plunged some 95 percent from the peak of 5,018 on Aug. 19 to just 268 on Oct. 7. COVID-19 related hospitalizations in the state, one of the worst-hit in the nation, dropped from 1,667 on Aug. 19 to 403 on Thursday.

 

Similar drops have been recorded in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, and Texas.

 

At the same time, metrics have been rising in many northern states, including those in New England.

 

Vermont, for instance, went from one case on July 5 to 286 on Oct. 1, and eight hospitalizations in the month of June to 160 in the month of September, though the metrics have been declining in recent days.

 

In North Dakota, active cases jumped from 143 on July 5 to 4,485 on Oct. 7 while hospitalizations rose from 9 to 184.

I've bought fresh ginger a few times and I find that despite the dry climate, it molds very quickly and I end up throwing it away. But if this tea sticks as a habit I may start stocking it again. In my 14 years of representing the people of my riding, I have often found myself at odds with a system that is being used to benefit political parties and lobbyists, with little regard for local public interest.

 

It isn’t just the party I was in; I observed this happening across all the parties. Special interests contributed to the bank accounts of all the parties in order to curry favour with legislation and regulatory procedure, ultimately giving these special interests greater control over the business of the Legislature than the people it was intended to serve.

 

There was nothing specifically illegal with much of this activity; over the years, legislative checks-and-balances were quietly but intentionally eroded by various parties in power, resulting in a crippled system that allows party interests to supersede the public interest. Now even being used to pressure the people to comply with mandates and policies that violate their own principals, morals, rights, and medical freedoms.

 

Would-be oligarchs and autocrats are now actively engaged in a struggle for power in our highest institutions, and achieving their objective requires the suppression and ultimate removal of the individual rights and freedoms that were put in place to ensure the people had exclusive authority over their government and themselves.

 

Only public influence can fix this; people need to make themselves ready.

Yeeea boy, I've always got fresh garlic on hand, as well as powder and pre-mashed pods in the freezer. It goes in nearly everything I eat. Crushed and fresh is best.

 

It's remarkable how good that tea tasted. I even ate the grit left at the bottom of the cup, which was intense but somehow my body encouraged me to go through with it.

The Pharisees and the Sadducees were both religious sects within Judaism during the time of Christ. Both groups honored Moses and the Law, and they both had a measure of political power. The Sanhedrin, the 70-member supreme court of ancient Israel, had members from both the Sadducees and the Pharisees.

 

The differences between the Pharisees and the Sadducees are known to us through a couple of passages of Scripture and through the extant writings of the Pharisees. Religiously, the Sadducees were more conservative in one doctrinal area: they insisted on a literal interpretation of the text of Scripture; the Pharisees, on the other hand, gave oral tradition equal authority to the written Word of God. If the Sadducees couldn’t find a command in the Tanakh, they dismissed it as manmade.

 

Given the Pharisees’ and the Sadducees’ differing view of Scripture, it’s no surprise that they argued over certain doctrines. The Sadducees rejected a belief in the resurrection of the dead (Matthew 22:23; Mark 12:18–27; Acts 23:8), but the Pharisees did believe in the resurrection. The Sadducees denied the afterlife, holding that the soul perished at death, but the Pharisees believed in an afterlife and in an appropriate reward and punishment for individuals. The Sadducees rejected the idea of an unseen, spiritual world, but the Pharisees taught the existence of angels and demons in a spiritual realm.

 

The apostle Paul shrewdly used the theological differences between the Pharisees and the Sadducees to escape their clutches. Paul had been arrested in Jerusalem and was making his defense before the Sanhedrin. Knowing that some of the court were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, Paul called out, “My brothers, I am a Pharisee, descended from Pharisees. I stand on trial because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead” (Acts 23:6). Paul’s mention of the resurrection precipitated a dispute between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, dividing the assembly, and causing “a great uproar” (verse 9). The Roman commander who watched the proceedings sent troops into the melee to rescue Paul from their violence (verse 10).

 

Socially, the Sadducees were more elitist and aristocratic than the Pharisees. Sadducees tended to be wealthy and to hold more powerful positions. The chief priests and high priest were Sadducees, and they held the majority of seats in the Sanhedrin. The Pharisees were more representative of the common working people and had the respect of the masses. The Sadducees’ locus of power was the temple in Jerusalem; the Pharisees controlled the synagogues. The Sadducees were friendlier with Rome and more accommodating to the Roman laws than the Pharisees were. The Pharisees often resisted Hellenization, but the Sadducees welcomed it.

Kurz, who became the People’s party leader and then chancellor in 2017, has denied wrongdoing and until Saturday made clear he planned to stay on.

 

The Greens said the probe created a “disastrous” impression. In a separate case, anti-corruption authorities put Kurz under investigation in May on suspicion of making false statements to a parliamentary commission, an allegation he also rejected.

 

Opposition leaders had called for Kurz to go and planned to bring a no-confidence motion against him Tuesday in parliament.

 

In Saturday’s statement, Kurz insisted again that the accusations against him “are false and I will be able to clear this up – I am deeply convinced of that”.

 

He said he will keep his party’s leadership as well as becoming its parliamentary group leader.

 

Kurz’s first coalition with the far-right Freedom party collapsed in 2019. The chancellor pulled the plug after a video surfaced showing the Freedom party’s leader at the time, Heinz-Christian Strache, appearing to offer favours to a purported Russian investor.

 

Austria’s next regular parliamentary election is due in 2024.
