But I think it shouldn't be a "special counsel" which is a temporary role, but an assigned bureaucrat in one of the parts of the Executive Branch, probably the Federal Communications Commission, who will testify regularly and be overseen by Congress.

  • President proclaims insurrection and the 2007 Defense Authorization Bill's sec (((333))) allows him to use federal troops. My notes on several articles I read are below. Sorry for the lack of sauce, but all of it is easily researched.

 

On September 30, 2006, the Congress modified the Insurrection Act as part of theย 2007 Defense Authorization Billย (repealedย as of 2008). Section 1076 of the law changed Sec. 333 of the "Insurrection Act," and widened the President's ability to deploy troops within the United States to enforce the laws. Under this act, the President may also deploy troops as a police force during a natural disaster, epidemic, serious public health emergency, terrorist attack, or other condition, when the President determines that the authorities of the state are incapable of maintaining public order. The bill also modified Sec. 334 of the Insurrection Act, giving the President authority to order the dispersal of either insurgents or "those obstructing the enforcement of the laws." The law changed the name of the chapter from "Insurrection" to "Enforcement of the Laws to Restore Public Order."

The 2008 Defense Authorization Bill, repeals the changes made in theย 2007 bill.[3]

The 2007 Defense Authorization Bill, with over $500 billion allocated to the military, and which also contained the changes to the Insurrection Act of 1807, was passed by a bipartisan majority of both houses of Congress: 398-23 in theย Houseย and by unanimous consent in theย Senate.[4]ย For military forces to be used under the provisions of the revised Insurrection Act, the following conditions must be met:

(1) The President may employ the armed forces, including the National Guard in Federal service, toโ€“

(A) restore public order and enforce the laws of the United States when, as a result of a natural disaster, epidemic, or other serious public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident, or other condition in any State or possession of the United States, the President determines thatโ€“

(i) domestic violence has occurred to such an extent that the constituted authorities of the State or possession are incapable of maintaining public order; and

To proclaim a state of insurrection is a necessary prerequisite if cascading powers, such as is found inย 50 U.S.C.ย ยงย 212ย Confiscation of property employed to aid insurrection, are to be used.

Allegations of misconduct involving the Drug Enforcement Administration's Haiti office are raising questions about the effectiveness of the U.S. drug-fighting efforts in the country, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee says.

 

And it wants the Justice Department to get involved.

 

Committee Chairman Rep. Trey Gowdy, a Republican from South Carolina, and Rep. Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland, the top Democrat on the committee, have written to Justice's Inspector General Michael Horowitz asking him to review allegations of potential mismanagement and misconduct in Haiti's DEA country office.

 

"Because of the seriousness of these allegations, we request that your office initiate a review," the May 14 letter said.

While offering few specifics, the letter said the committee received information that "raises serious concerns relating to the handling of personnel matters and whistleblower retaliation, among other things.

 

"These concerns were verified in part by reports of investigation written by DEA's Office of Professional Responsibility and transmitted to the Committee in response to a letter to then Administrator Chuck Rosenberg on May 11, 2017. The Committee also received information that raises questions about the effectiveness of DEA's drug investigations in Haiti."

 

Amanda Gonzalez, who serves as communications director for the committee, said the members have yet to receive a response to the request.

โ€œThe Committee is unable to share any additional details at this time,โ€ she said in an email.

 

The DEA office in Miami referred inquiries about the matter to the Office of Professional Responsibility in Washington.

 

Haiti's DEA office currently has a staff of eight, and agents in recent years have been involved in several high-profile operations alongside Haiti National Police.

In January 2017, agents helped arrest Haiti senator-elect and ex-rebel leader Guy Philippe, who had eluded capture for more than a decade. He was extradited to the U.S. Six months later, he was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to accepting between $1.5 million and $3.5 million in cocaine profits from Colombian traffickers for allowing them to use Haiti to ship cocaine to Miami and other parts of the United States between 1999 and 2003.

 

A year earlier, DEA agents also joined Haiti police in a seizure of several kilos of cocaine and 10 kilograms of heroine aboard the Panama-flagged ship Manzanares that docked at a private Haiti port, carrying sugar from Colombia.

While many of us in the U.S. slept or started our days in other ways, millions of our fellow citizens and hundreds of millions around the world tuned in to the extensive TV coverage of the royal wedding. Those watching via British broadcaster Sky News' livestream didn't have to rack their brains to identify famous wedding guests, thanks to Amazon.com's (NASDAQ: AMZN) artificial intelligence (AI).

Here's what you should know.

Who's that royal?

Who's that guy walking behind George Clooney? Who's that woman whose spaceship-sized hat could inspire War of the Worlds II?

 

These are the type of questions that were answered by Sky News' "Who's Who Live" function, built by a collaboration between the U.K. broadcaster, Amazon Web Services, and AWS partners GrayMeta and UI Centric. As the 600 guests entered St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, the livestream function used Amazon Rekognition to identify notable attendees, such as royals and celebrities, via on-screen captions. It also displayed data to let viewers know a little about the highlighted guests and how they are connected to the royal couple.

 

Amazon Rekognition is a cloud-based technology that uses AI to recognize and analyze faces (that woman is in her 30s and is deep in thought), and recognize objects, scenes (that's a beach), and activities (that's a boy riding a bike) in images and video. Specifically, the tech uses a type of AI called deep learning, which aims to mimic in machines how humans make inferences from data. Rekognition Image launched in late 2016, followed by Rekognition Video a year later, so these are relatively new offerings within AWS's robust and fast-growing portfolio of cloud services.

 

This AI technology has many current and potential applications spanning realms from media and entertainment to law enforcement and security.
