Longtime U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, D-Dallas, announced Saturday she is not running for reelection after serving nearly three decades in Congress.

 

โ€œI have gone back and forth โ€ฆ the whole time because of the pleading and the asking, but as of January โ€ฆ the year after next, I will step down,โ€ Johnson said during an event in Dallas. "I will retire, and let me assure that I will also recommend to you whom I feel is the best to follow me."

 

First elected to Congress in 1992, Johnson, 85, is among its most senior members and serves as dean of the Texas delegation. She chairs the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

 

A former state legislator, Johnson is known for breaking barriers. She was the first Black woman ever elected to public office in Dallas when she won a state House seat in 1972. She went on to become the first registered nurse to ever serve in Congress.

 

The decision Johnson announced Saturday is consistent with what she told constituents in 2019 โ€” that her current term would be her last. However, since winning reelection last year, she had declined to confirm that, fueling speculation about whether she would reverse herself in recent months.

 

Democrats began to circle her seat as questions about her 2022 plans persisted. In May, Jane Hope Hamilton, a former top staffer for Joe Bidenโ€™s campaign in Texas, launched an exploratory committee for the seat, saying she would run if Johnson chose not to seek reelection. And last month, Abel Mulugheta, the former chief of staff to state Rep. Rafael Anchia, D-Dallas, announced an outright campaign for the seat. Jessica Mason, a Navy veteran and progressive activist, is also running for the Democratic nomination.

 

Johnsonโ€™s 30th District is set to remain one of the bluest congressional districts in the state after redistricting. It will also stay anchored in Dallas, spreading to the southern edge of the namesake county.

Iranians Hold Huge Anti-Government Protest After Key River Completely Dries Up

 

Rare mass protests have hit a large central Iranian city over persisting water shortages and continued economic woes which is fast creating a humanitarian crisis as farmers are losing their crops.

 

Thousands gathered in central Isfahan, outraged over government mismanagement which has allowed a key river to dry up completely. "Footage broadcast by state television and dozens of videos circulating on social media on Friday showed a sea of farmers and other people standing on a huge barren strip of dirt where the major Zayandeh Rud River used to flow, near the iconic Khaju Bridge in Isfahan province," Al Jazeera reports.

 

Lack of resources - which has of late also included gasoline after last month a major cyberattack disrupted a national program for state-subsidized fuel, literally taking gas stations offline for days and weeks (it was widely blamed on Israel) - has fueled sporadic protests for much of the past year, also amid rolling blackouts as the power grid has been strained to the max across major cities.

 

The current protest in Isfahan has been underway for much of the past week, but Friday saw the biggest gathering yet, gaining international media attention. Isfahan is the country's third-largest city.

 

Iranian officials have reportedly been under pressure to find a solution for the region's lack of water. "The key river has faced water shortages and droughts for years, and farmers have intermittently protested the lack of attention given to the issue. But officials have yet to find a sustainable solution to the problem," Al Jazeera notes further.

How Bill Gates bankrolls the media outlet that claims itโ€™s not backed by billionaires

 

It likes to tap its readers for donations by claiming itโ€™s funded by them, not the mega-wealthy. But, in reality, billionaires have forked out millions to support the UKโ€™s premier right-on, left-of-centre newspaper.

 

If you want to know what the โ€˜wokeโ€™ set are thinking โ€“ on issues from climate change to trans rights โ€“ The Guardianโ€™s the newspaper to read. While its print sales have been in decline, falling over the past decade from 248,775 a day to 105,134 in July this year, The Guardian is one of the most visited news websites in the world.

 

The trouble is it keeps losing money. Four months ago, it was reported that the Guardian Media Group, which also owns The Observer, a closely related Sunday broadsheet, had lost over ยฃ10 million in the previous financial year, although that was still an improvement on the ยฃ17 million loss the year before. The Guardian doesnโ€™t have a paywall in the same way as other newspapers, but does employ what computer types used to call โ€˜nagwareโ€™, constantly prompting users to sign up or to make donations.

 

However, it has made one rather spurious claim on social media in support of this strategy: โ€œWeโ€™re not funded by billionaires. Our readersโ€™ backing gives us the independence to hold the powerful to account โ€“ and weโ€™re just getting started.โ€

 

Readers have certainly been generous. According to a Guardian story last year: โ€œThe Guardian now has more than one million subscribers and regular contributors, after support from online readers grew by 43% in a year. โ€ฆ When one-off contributions are factored in, more than 1.5 million people have supported the Guardian in the past year.โ€ A million subscribers at ยฃ5.99 per month would bring in about ยฃ6 million. Thatโ€™s handy, but doesnโ€™t even cover the paperโ€™s losses, never mind its overall running costs.

 

However, as climate commentator Ben Pile has noted, billionaires love The Guardian and are very happy to put their hand in their pocket to support its projects. For example, according to US outlet MintPress News, a thorough sift through donations from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation shows The Guardian has received a cool $12,951,391 in support. In fact, Gates and his now ex-wife have sprayed hundreds of millions of dollars across the media landscape to support the kind of journalism they approve of.

 

But the Gateses arenโ€™t the only billionaires supporting The Guardian. A quick look at its websiteโ€™s philanthropy section shows that Aussie billionaire Judith Neilsonโ€™s institute funds The Guardian Australiaโ€™s Pacific Project. TBILISI, November 20. /TASS/. Former Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili was taken to a military hospital in the eastern city of Gori early on Saturday, according to a live broadcast by Pirveli TV.

 

A mobile intensive care unit with Saakashvili on board left a prison hospital in Tbilisi late on Friday, heading to a military hospital in the eastern Georgian city of Gori some 90km away from the capital. Saakashvili was accompanied by his personal physician Nikoloz Kipshidze, several prison hospital doctors and his mother Giuli Alasania. The mobile ICU traveled with a convoy of vehicles of the Interior Ministry and the Special Penitentiary Service of the Justice Ministry.

 

The situation near the hospital is calm. The building is cordoned off by the police. At present, Saakashviliโ€™s lawyers and physician are waiting for a permission to meet with him and assess his conditions.

 

His lawyer Nika Gvaramia said on Friday that the ex-leader had given his consent to being transferred to the Gori military hospital and would end the hunger strike that he had declared more than a month ago once he arrives there.

 

During a meeting with his attorney on Thursday, Saakashvili fainted and fell over. A prison hospital doctor said later that his condition had been stabilized. However, the former president remained in an intensive care ward.

 

Saakashvili was detained in Georgia on October 1 after his return to the country shortly ahead of the first round of municipal elections. He was kept in prison in the city of Rustavi, where he went on a hunger strike as he claims to be a political prisoner. On November 8, Georgiaโ€™s Justice Ministry transferred the politician to a prison hospital on the outskirts of Tbilisi, but Saakashvili and his lawyers opposed it firmly and insisted that he should go to a private hospital.

After a registered sex offender was arrested twice in three days on felony charges in Northern Virginia, local leaders are wondering what it takes to land a criminal behind bars when lenient prosecutors backed by George Soros are administering justice.

 

The serial CVS bandit, Karim Clayton, 44, has a seedy criminal history ranging from menacing a CVS employee with a knife to leading police on a high-speed chase on a major regional thoroughfare.

 

But Fairfax County prosecutor Steve Descano and Arlington County prosecutor Parisa Dehghani-Taftiโ€”who cruised to victory with six-figure donations from Sorosโ€”have brought charges against Clayton at least a dozen times between them, only to abandon their cases or plead him out on paltry misdemeanors with almost no jail time.

 

"Radical leftist prosecutors like Steve Descano and Parisa Dehghani-Tafti do not represent the public or crime victims," said Sean Kennedy, president of Virginians for Safe Communities. "Their allegiances lie with criminal defendants first, last, and always."

 

A two-year-long spike in violent crime is a political hazard for President Joe Biden and Democrats. Virginia governor-elect Glenn Youngkin (R.) hammered a public safety message throughout his campaign, promising to fully fund law enforcement and fire an inmate-friendly state parole board. Republican candidates in the commonwealth are homing in on a similar strategy ahead of next year's midterm elections.

 

Thus far, Claytonโ€™s twin arrests in the last week of September have netted him only three months in prison. He was arrested for assault and battery on Sunday, Sept. 26, in Fairfax County and released on bail Monday morning, according to Virginia court records. That case has not yet been resolved. Authorities arrested Clayton the very next day in Arlington County for stealing from a CVS.

 

Court records show Clayton was sentenced to 12 months in jail after Dehghani-Tafti's office pled him down to a misdemeanor for the CVS robbery. He can serve nine of those months on probation, however, meaning he will spend just 90 days behind bars.

Navy Shipbuilding Contractor Suspends Vaccine Mandate After Workers Threaten to Leave

 

A Navy shipbuilding company has ended its vaccine mandate after workers threatened to quit and the Navy confirmed it did not require the mandate.

 

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), the parent company of Newport News Shipbuilding, is the worldโ€™s only manufacturer of the U.S. Navyโ€™s nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. The company also serves as just one of two manufacturers of Virginia and Columbia Class submarines, employing more than 25,000 workers in Virginia.

 

Newport had previously announced plans to require all 25,000 of its workers to be fully vaccinated by Dec. 8. The deadline was later moved to Jan. 4, to allow additional time.

 

The deadline has now been โ€œsuspended,โ€ with the requirement ended.

 

โ€œWe have not wanted to lose a single employee to the virus, or to the effect of the mandate,โ€ President and CEO Mike Petters wrote in a letter (pdf) to employees on Wednesday.

 

โ€œImportantly, with respect to Ingalls Shipbuilding and Newport News Shipbuilding, our customer has confirmed that our contracts do not include a requirement to implement the mandate. Technical Solutions employees are in a different situation and face varied requirements depending on the particular contract,โ€ he added.

 

The company continues to encourage employees to receive the COVID-19 vaccines, but no longer requires vaccination for employment.

'There is not an active shooter': Firearm accidentally discharged at Atlanta airport, police say

ATLANTA - Officials at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport said on Saturday afternoon there was no active shooter threat and airport passengers and employees are safe.

 

Atlanta police said a gun accidentally fired at the airport near the main security checkpoint.

 

Police said at around 2:15 p.m. they hadn't received reports of injuries.

 

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

 

Videos on social media showed some apparently taking cover.

Vaccinated English adults under 60 are dying at twice the rate of unvaccinated people the same age

 

The brown line represents weekly deaths from all causes of vaccinated people aged 10-59, per 100,000 people.

 

The blue line represents weekly deaths from all causes of unvaccinated people per 100,000 in the same age range.

 

I have checked the underlying dataset myself and this graph is correct. Vaccinated people under 60 are twice as likely to die as unvaccinated people. And overall deaths in Britain are running well above normal.

 

I donโ€™t know how to explain this other than vaccine-caused mortality.

In January 2017, Igor Danchenko, a primary source for the Steele dossier, told FBI officials in a debriefing that one of his sources for derogatory information about Donald Trumpโ€™s alleged ties to Russia was merely an anonymous voice on the other end of a phone call that lasted 10-15 minutes.

 

The voice, Danchenko claimed, was someone he assumed to be Sergei Millian, an immigrant from Belarus, president and founder of an organization called the Russian-American Chamber of Commerce. As thin as that sourcing sounds, the truth appears to be worse. According to a new criminal indictment, Danchenko lied to FBI agents: There was no voice and there was no phone call. The Russian national made it all up.

Still, the FBI continued to use Danchenkoโ€™s supposed sourceโ€™s claims of a โ€œwell-developed conspiracy of cooperationโ€ between Russia and Trump to convince a secret federal court to allow investigators to electronically monitor at least one Trump campaign adviser, Carter Page, whom the FBI accused of masterminding the conspiracy based on Danchenko's dubious claims. Agents swore in court documents reviewed by RealClearInvestigations that Danchenko was โ€œtruthful and cooperative,โ€ even after discovering he misled them regarding his allegedly well-placed source.

 

The combination of Danchenko reporting a โ€œconspiracyโ€ and the FBI vouching for his credibility persuaded the powerful Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to authorize wiretapping Page as a suspected Russian agent for almost a year. Page was never charged and is now suing the FBI and Justice Department for $75 million.

 

Special Counsel John Durham detailed the alleged dossier fiction in a grand jury indictment unsealed last week charging Danchenko with five felony counts of lying to the FBI โ€” four of which relate to the invented phone call with Millian, a New York Realtor who was in reality a big fan of Trump.

 

โ€œDanchenko never received such a phone call or such information from any person he believed to be [Millian], and Danchenko never made any arrangements to meet [Millian],โ€ the indictment states. โ€œDanchenko fabricated these facts."

When his name first publicly surfaced in early 2017 as a key source of the dossier, Millian said he emphatically denied it in interviews with the Washington media, who were scrambling to corroborate the dossier. He showed RealClearInvestigations emails he exchanged with reporters for the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal Rosalind Helderman and Tom Hamburger from the former and Mark Maremont from the latter in which he tried to steer them off the story, insisting it was โ€œa vicious lieโ€ and a smear campaign against him and the incoming Republican president. But the newspapers nonetheless reported he was the source for the most explosive parts of the dossier, including the claim that Russian President Vladimir Putin had compromising sex tapes of Trump and that he and Trump were engaged in a โ€œwell-developed conspiracyโ€ to steal the 2016 election.

 

Asked for comment, Maremont of the Journal responded, "I don't know you or your outlet,โ€ then referred a reporter to media relations for his paper's publisher, Dow Jones. The Post reporters did not return requests for comment.

The raids, the CBI said, were conducted after the discovery of an online child sexual abuse operation that allegedly involves more than 50 syndicates and 5,000 individuals spread across 100 countries.

 

According to sources in the CBI, the nexus was engaged in the online distribution of child sexual exploitation material (CSEM) for monetary benefits.

 

The illegal operation, the sources said, came to the CBIโ€™s notice about three months ago. Following โ€œintensive intel collection and surveillance in the remotest areas of the country over a period of three monthsโ€, the agency conducted raids at multiple locations on 14 November, a source told ThePrint.

 

The raids in India were conducted in Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh, besides Delhi.

Bomb disposal experts from the US Air Force were called in to handle the missile on Friday afternoon, alongside Lakeland Fire Rescue and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives.

 

Usually, containers have inert missiles in them, but this S-530 French air-to-air missile had explosives on it - although it was not armed, essentially the equivalent of a loaded firearm with the safety catch on.

 

The whole southeast side of the airport was evacuated for about four hours, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

 

The container arrived with pieces of a plane from a company called Draken International, the local ABC station reported.

Strange that the hospital took this action right after Dr. Bowden testified on Mr. Jonesโ€™ behalf.

 

Thursday, the court ruling which would have provided Dr. Bowden to treat Mr. Jones with Ivermectin, was overturned. The hospital, Texas Health Huguley, had appealed the court order on the basis that Dr. Bowden (mentioned above) did not have admitting privileges to the hospital. The hospital argued that the court did not have the authority to circumvent its policies by ordering admitting privileges without the doctor going through the standard process. The appellate court agreed and overturned the order of the lower court. The decision is significant because Ms. Jones would have to start all over again, but also find a doctor with admitting privileges at Texas Health Huguley, whoโ€™s willing to prescribe and treat with Ivermectin.

 

Also, a GoFundMe fundraiser page set up for the family was shut down Wednesday without notice or warning because an update mentioned Ivermectin. The action of closing the fundraiser immediately was taken in an unforced and unprofessional manner that could have been addressed properly in a number of other ways. GoFundMe has garnered a reputation for which theyโ€™re known to be politically biased and hostile against conservative causes.

Herbal medicine used to treat smallpox in the 19th century found to halt viral replication in vitro

 

An old herbal remedy for treating smallpox that is thought to have been used by native Americans in the late 1800s has been rediscovered and found to kill the poxvirus. Smallpox has been eradicated, but the finding offers a possible treatment for poxvirus in the unlikely event of a bioterror attack or increased incidence of similar poxviruses such as monkey pox.

 

Smallpox ravaged human populations for thousands of years, but in 1796 Edward Jenner discovered that exposure to cowpox lesions could provide immunity to smallpox. This led to the creation of the first vaccine for a disease. It took some time, but in 1979 the World Health Organization officially declared that smallpox had been eradicated.

 

Historical sources suggest that in the 1800s, when smallpox still posed a serious threat, the Micmac native Americans of Nova Scotia treated the disease using a botanical infusion derived from the insectivorous plant Sarracenia purpurea, a species of pitcher plant.

 

Now, Jeffrey Langland at Arizona State University in Tempe, US, and colleagues have conducted in vitro experiments with the herbal extract and found it inhibits replication of the variola virus, the causative agent behind smallpox.

 

Although, natural smallpox no longer poses a health threat, there is a remote possibility that unstable states or terrorist groups could have acquired stocks of the virus following the collapse of the Soviet Union, which had developed smallpox as a biological warfare agent.

 

Vaccinations are still administered to at risk groups including researchers working with poxviruses and members of the US military who could potentially be exposed to the virus through biological warfare. But since the risk is so low for populations at large, it is hard to justify vaccinating everyone, particularly because the vaccine can have serious side effects. Developing therapies is therefore important in order to treat people if a bioterror event does occur.

 

โ€™There is much scepticism on herbal medicine but what our results illustrate conclusively is that this herb is able to kill the virus and we can actually demonstrate how it kills the virus,โ€™ says Langland. โ€™It takes this herb out of the realm of folklore, and into the area of true scientific evidence.โ€™

 

The team made extracts of S. purpurea and found that it was highly effective at inhibiting the replication of the virus in rabbit kidney cells. They then looked at the replication cycle of the virus and found that the herb inhibits mRNA synthesis, halting production of proteins vital for replication. โ€™Other drugs are being developed against smallpox, but S. purpurea is the only known therapy that will target the virus at this point in the replication cycle,โ€™ says Langland.

 

โ€™The extract blocks early transcription appearing to have a distinct mechanism of action from that of two other antivirals currently in clinical trials,โ€™ says Mark Buller, a virologist at Saint Louis University, Missouri, US. โ€™The results are very compelling, and support the need to further evaluate the purified active ingredient in small animal studies.โ€™

 

โ€™With smallpox, it is obviously impossible to see if this herb is effective in the human body unless a bioterror release of the virus occurs,โ€™ says Langland. โ€™We are in the process of doing animal studies to confirm our results in at least this type of whole animal system.โ€™

Multinational-Operation Leads to Arrests of Venezuelan, Brazilian Migrants near California Border

 

San Diego Sector Border Patrol agents and Mexican officials teamed up to disrupt a transnational smuggling operation. The investigation led to the arrest of smugglers and migrants on both sides of the California-Mexico border.

 

Between October 28 and November 9, Border Patrol agents apprehended five groups of migrants who illegally crossed the border from Mexico. The groups consisted mostly of migrants from Brazil and Venezuela, according to information obtained from San Diego Sector Border Patrol officials. The five groups ranged in size from 43 migrants to 93 migrants.

 

During the preceding week, agents interdicted three more smuggling operations leading to the apprehension of 67, 69, and 72 migrants respectively. Nearly all of the groups consisted of citizens of Venezuela and Brazil, officials stated.

Beginning on November 4, Border Patrol officials with the San Diego Sector Foreign Operations Branch worked with the government of Mexico to investigate the transnational human smuggling operation. Sarracenia Purpurea Cures Smallpox

 

In the late 1800โ€™s, the Micmac Indians of Nova Scotia proclaimed the existence of a botanical-based remedy for smallpox. During this time, Herbert Miles, the Assistant Surgeon to the Royal Artillery, reported that during an outbreak of smallpox โ€œan old squaw going amongst them, and treating the cases with (a botanical) infusionโ€ฆwas so successful as to cure every caseโ€. This botanical infusion was later described as being derived from the carnivorous plant, Sarracenia purpurea [1], [2].

Business Lobby Files Court Notice Over Bidenโ€™s Vaccine Mandate: Stop โ€˜Bullying Businesses to Complyโ€™

 

The Job Creators Network (JCN), a business advocacy group, has filed a notice with the Sixth Circuit Court of Appealsโ€”which is hearing all legal challenges to President Joe Bidenโ€™s COVID-19 vaccine requirementโ€”and sent a letter to the president saying the group expects the White House to comply with a court decision to freeze the mandate.

 

โ€œWe expect the White House to respect and listen to the judiciary rather than barnstorming ahead and bullying businesses to comply with this rule whose legal fate is in serious jeopardy,โ€ JCN wrote in the Nov. 19 letter to Biden (pdf). โ€œWe expect the White House to respect the rule of law and observe the courtโ€™s temporary stay.โ€

 

It comes days after the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) said it would suspend enforcement of the mandate after an appeals court reaffirmed its decision to temporarily block the rule, which was published earlier this month. Affecting tens of millions of private-sector employees, the mandate triggered a barrage of lawsuits from Republican states, businesses, individuals, and other groups.

 

On Thursday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said businesses with 100 or more workers should move ahead and implement the federal governmentsโ€™ rule requiring workers to get vaccinated or submit to regular testing, in spite of the temporary stay.

 

โ€œOur message to businesses right now is to move forward with measures that will make their workplaces safer and protect their workforces from COVID-19,โ€ she told reporters at the White House Thursday. โ€œThat was our message after the first stay issued by the Fifth Circuit. That remains our message and nothing has changed.โ€

 

Despite OSHAโ€™s decision and the legal challenges, Psaki said the Biden administration is confident that it has the authority to implement the rule and confirmed the White House is still working under the guise that businesses will implement the mandate by Jan. 4.

 

โ€œWe are still heading towards the same timeline,โ€ she said. โ€œThe Department of Justice is vigorously defending the emergency temporary standard in court and we are confident in OSHAโ€™s authority.โ€

 

Earlier this week, the dispute over the OSHA rule, known as an emergency temporary standard, was transferred to the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which has a majority of its judges confirmed by Republican presidential administrations.

 

JCN also filed a notice (pdf) with the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, urging the court to promptly hear and resolve the legal challenges to the mandate. In the letter to the White House, the group argued that the Biden administrationโ€™s actions amount to โ€œexecutive overreach,โ€ a โ€œvaccine mandate federal power grab,โ€ and that it is โ€œignoring the courtsโ€ in urging businesses to proceed with implementation despite the stay.

 

โ€œToday Job Creators Network officially notified the court of the White Houseโ€™s inappropriate pressure and calls for a prompt final resolution of the mandate challenge,โ€ Alfredo Ortiz, president and CEO of JCN, said in a statement. โ€œJoe Biden and Jen Psaki must cease and desist from pushing small businesses into compliance with this illegal edict.โ€

 

The Epoch Times has reached out to the White House for comment.

 

Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that about 47 million U.S. COVID-19 cases and around 768,000 deaths have been reported since the start of the pandemic in the United States.
