Third Independent Media Shuts in Wake of Hong Kong Police’s Arrest and Raid of Another Publication

 

A Hong Kong independent online publication on Jan. 3 said its decision to shut down was triggered by the recent closure of Stand News, adding their journalists no longer feel safe under the vague standards of law enforcement.

 

Citizens News, a digital newsroom founded in 2017 by a group of veteran journalists, made the sudden closure announcement on Sunday, saying it would stop updating its website from midnight of Jan. 4 and close after that.

 

The online news outlet, which had sheltered journalists from now-shuttered pro-democracy Apple Daily, said it could no longer operate amid β€œrapid changes in society in the past two years and the deterioration of the media environment.” Stand News added the decision was for the need to ensure the safety of its staff.

 

Briefing reporters on Monday, Chris Yeung, chief writer of Citizen News, explained the trigger point was the recent actions against Stand News.

 

On Dec. 29, over 200 national security police raided the office of Stand News, froze its assets, and arrested seven current and former executives on suspicion of engaging in the β€œconspiracy to publish seditious publications” under a colonial-era ordinance. Hours later, the independent online outlet declared it would stop operation and dismissed all staff members.

 

Two of those arrested have been denied bail after they were formally charged with sedition on Dec. 30.

 

β€œWe tried our best not to infringe the law, but we can no longer clearly grasp the lines of law enforcement,” said Yeung, who is also a former president of the Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA).

 

β€œJournalists are humans too and have families and friends,” he said, β€œIn an environment where we cannot work safely, it’s time to consider this question seriously. Journalists don’t want to be in this dilemma because of their work.”

 

He said the outlet so far hasn’t been contacted by law enforcement, but some commentaries written by people familiar with the matters have indicated that online media outlets would be the next target.

 

β€œWhat changed is not us, but the outside, objective environment,” said Citizen News Chief Editor Daisy Li.

 

β€œCan we work on some β€˜safe news’?” Li told reporters. β€œI don’t even know what is β€˜safe news.’”

 

β€œWe all love this place, deeply,” Citizen News said in a statement on Sunday, when it announced the closure. β€œRegrettably, what was ahead of us is not just pouring rains or blowing winds, but hurricanes and tsunamis.”

 

The former British colony that was handed back to Beijing in 1997 was once known as a haven for dissent, freedom of the press, and expression not seen on the mainland. But the communist regime in Beijing has clamped down in the last two years, leading to the closure of independent news outlets, the removal of monuments, and a poorly attended election swept by pro-Beijing politicians.

 

HKJA, in a Monday statement, said it was β€œdeeply saddened and regretted” by the loss of Citizens News.

 

Ronson Chan, the current president of the HKJA, worried the end of Citizens News and Stand News would set off a chain of closures, as the two prominent online publications could no longer withstand the pressure.

 

β€œWe may face a disaster of press freedom,” Chan told the Hong Kong edition of The Epoch Times.

 

As a former deputy assignment editor of the now-shuttered Stand News, Chan himself was arrested on Dec. 29. He was released hours later.

Rep. Devin Nunes formally resigns from Congress

 

California GOP Devin Nunes on Monday formally resigned his House seat. The longtime member is leaving to head former President Donald Trump's new media and technology venture.

 

A resignation letter from Nunes was read aloud on the House floor during a pro forma session Monday. His resignation will take effect at 11:59 tonight.

 

"The honorable, the speaker, House of Representatives, madam, I write to inform you that I have notified California Gov. Gavin Newsom of my resignation from the U.S. House of Representatives effective today at 11:59 p.m.," the letter reads.

 

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.), who was presiding over the chamber at the time, announced that there are now 433 members of the House of Representatives. Nunes' seat is, for the moment vacant, as is the seat that was held by the late Rep. Alcee Hastings, who passed in April.

 

When Nunes announced his surprise departure from the House last month, saying he had been "presented with a new opportunity to fight for the most important issues I believe in."

 

The recent redrawing of congressional district in California led by state Democrats likely would have made 2022 reelection more difficult for Nunes.

 

GOP House leader Kevin McCarthy announced recently that Rep. Mike Turner of Ohio will replace Nunes as the ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee. Had Nunes kept his seat, and Republicans won the majority during the upcoming midterm, Nunes would have been poised to become the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has announced he will no longer post videos to YouTube, encouraging others who oppose Big Tech censorship to join him in leaving the Google-owned platform. He will continue to post videos to the internet via his Rumble account.

 

The libertarian leaning-Kentucky senator said his decision was part of a broader exodus from the Big Tech platforms, which he accuses of censorship.

 

YouTube has repeatedly censored Sen. Paul’s content, including a speech on the floor of the Senate. The Senator has nonetheless defended, on free-market grounds, tech companies right to censor whoever they please, including himself.

Agent 355 is the protagonist of a story where the main actor identity still remains unknown nowadays.

 

The Culper Ring (Culper Spy Ring), was an American intelligence organisation. General George Washington set up this organisation and Major Benjamin Tallmadge supervised it during the American Revolution. This network of spies was active from the British-occupied New York City to Northern Connecticut between 1778 and 1780.

 

The group was employing a set of codes and invisible inks to provide to General Washington timely and accurate information. The information that the Ring supplied to the General was often related to surprise attacks from the enemy. Sometimes this intelligence also dealt with British plans to counter or weaken the strength of the Americans.

 

Most of the members of the group were acquaintances and friends of Tallmadge. The Culper Ring gave all of the agents a secret identity, which corresponded to a number. Tallmadge was 721, Abraham Woodhull 722, Robert Townsend 723, and 711 was George Washington. Within the group, there was also a woman, Agent 355, but her identity is still unknown.

 

355 was the cypher for β€œlady” in Tallmadge’s codebook. Only once did the Culper Ring’s correspondence in 1779 mention Agent 355. The message from Woodhull said: β€œI intended to visit 727 (codename for New York) before long and think by the assistance of a 355 of my acquaintance, shall be able to out wit them all.”

 

Most say that Woodhull recruited Agent 355. She was part of an important Tory family who was able to gain information about British commanders and politicians from various gatherings within New York’s British society. It was easier for a woman to get information in these circumstances. Soldiers and politicians talked freely in front of them, not considering them a threat. She was friend with Major John Andre, who was the Chief of British Intelligence, and she probably knew Benedict Arnold, an American military officer. Some believed that Major John was the one responsible for Andre’s arrest and for exposing Benedict Arnold’s treason.

 

In 1780, the authorities arrested and then hanged Andre since he helped Arnold with the attempt to surrender the West Point’s fort in New York. Arnold managed to escape, and the British arrested Agent 355. In October 1780, a letter that Woodhull wrote was found, reporting that β€œseveral friends were captured”. One who had been ever serviceable to this correspondence.”, which some believed to be Agent 355.

The website has since been restored after the hack happened at about 2am Monday (local time). The featured image showed a missile being "fired" from a ring on the hand of the late IRGC Quds force leader, who has assassinated on orders from then President Trump on Jan.3rd, 2020 via drone strike at Baghdad's international airport.

 

Iranian officials have also long blamed Israel for being part of the assassination, which was actually belatedly confirmed by Israeli defense officials themselves last month. In December, while speaking about Soleimani's death in a media interview, Israel's former military intelligence chief, Maj. Gen. Tamir Heyman described that "Assassinating Soleimani was an achievement, since our main enemy, in my eyes, are the Iranians."

 

The website has since been restored and is functioning properly. Amid the cyber-intrusion JPost editors had acknowledged, "We are aware of the apparent hacking of our website, alongside a direct threat to Israel," the English-language newspaper stated. It was a timely investigation: A contract research organization that took part in running Pfizer’s global Covid-19 vaccine trials had been accused of sloppy practices by several former employees, and their evidence was published Nov. 2, 2021, in the BMJ (formerly known as the British Medical Journal).

 

But when Facebook’s fact-checking outfit, Lead Stories,discredited the exposΓ© and called the BMJ β€” one of the world’s oldest and most influential medical journals β€” a β€œnews blog,” the editors-in-chief had had enough.

 

β€œWe are aware that The BMJ is not the only high quality information provider to have been affected by the incompetence of Meta’s fact checking regime,” wrote editors Fiona Godlee and Kamran Abbasi on December 17, in an open letter to Mark Zuckerberg β€œβ€¦Rather than investing a proportion of Meta’s substantial profits to help ensure the accuracy of medical information shared through social media, you have apparently delegated responsibility to people incompetent in carrying out this crucial task. Fact checking has been a staple of good journalism for decades. What has happened in this instance should be of concern to anyone who values and relies on sources such as The BMJ.”

The article cited both named and unnamed sources accusing Ventavia Research Group of the following:

Participants placed in a hallway after injection and not being monitored by clinical staff, Adverse events not getting timely follow-up, Protocol deviations not being reported, Vaccines not being stored at proper temperature, Mislabelled laboratory specimens, and Ventavia staff targeted for reporting these types of problems.

 

Godlee and Abbasi wrote that Facebook users were thwarted when trying to share the investigative piece, simply unable to share it, while others had their posts accompanied by β€œMissing context … Independent fact-checkers say this information could mislead people.”

 

The BMJ, formerly known as British Medical Journal is consistently ranked by Journal Citation Reports as having the highest impact factor in medical decision-making, along with the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet and the Journal of the American Medical Association.

 

According to the editors, the article was published after β€œlegal review, external peer review and subject to The BMJ’s usual high level editorial oversight and review.”
