The Marine Corps Is Rapidly Forcing Out Vaccine Refusers, As Promised

The Marine Corps has moved aggressively to discharge service members since its vaccine mandate deadline of Nov. 14, having reviewed most of the several thousand claims for religious exemptions and thus far granting none.

 

According to the Corpsโ€™ latest update, it has separated 206 Marines to date with the vaccine refusal discharge code.

 

The weekly updates from the branch show that the separations began with 103 Marines on the week of Dec. 16.

 

Conversely, the Air Force, whose vaccine deadline arrived on Nov. 2, announced it had only discharged 27 people for failing to get the shot that same week. Meanwhile, the Navy has not announced any discharges stemming from its vaccine mandate despite it sharing the same Nov. 14 deadline.

The rapid pace also extends to the review of claims for religious exemption. The Marines say that they have now reviewed and adjudicated 3,080 of the 3,192 requests โ€“ more than 96%.

 

In contrast, the Air Forceโ€™s last update said it had 4,652 religious requests in progress while the Navyโ€™s update said it received 2,844 but didnโ€™t specify how many have already been ruled on.

 

Requests for exemption are decided on by the Manpower and Reserve Affairs command headed by Lt. Gen. David Ottignon - a deputy commandant - and not a Marinesโ€™ direct commander.

 

No branch of the military has yet to approve a religious exemption for the COVID-19 vaccine, and spokespeople for the Navy and Marine Corps have previously told Military.com that neither branch has granted such an exemption for any vaccine in at least seven years.

 

The Marineโ€™s vaccination rates have been notably lower than the rest of the branches. While the final figures for fully vaccinated service members at the time of their respective deadlines for the Navy, Army, and Air Force were around 96%, the Marine Corps reported a rate of 92%.

 

The removal of service members comes at a time when there has been growing conversation in the military about the danger the new Omicron variant poses to the armed forces and the need for booster shots.

 

The Pentagon announced this week that it is recommending the additional vaccine shot to everyone eligible at the Department of Defense. Troops, civilians and dependents who have completed an initial vaccination against COVID-19 either the one shot or two-shot series are eligible for a booster shot after six months.

 

On Dec. 20, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters that nearly 100,000 active-duty service members had already received boosters.

 

That announcement came amid reports that a Navy ship was fighting an outbreak of COVID-19. Part of the Navyโ€™s response has been to recommend and offer the crew booster shots.

 

The Navy has not said whether the outbreak on the Milwaukee is from the highly contagious Omicron variant of the virus, but Kirby has said that "given its rapid spread in the United States, we would expect Omicron cases will continue to rise within DoD in the near term."

Defense Secretary Taking More Authority for Use of DC Guard

WASHINGTON โ€” The Pentagon said Thursday it has streamlined the approval process for urgent use of National Guard forces in the District of Columbia, after months of study following the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

 

The changes give the defense secretary sole authority to approve requests that would involve D.C. National Guard personnel participating in civil law enforcement or that would require their deployment within 48 hours, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said in a written statement. That approval authority had previously been delegated to the Army secretary, the service's top civilian official.

 

The changes are intended to make the Pentagon better prepared to handle urgent requests for law enforcement support by civil authorities. After January's riot, the Pentagon came under criticism by some for a slow response to requests for Guard assistance, although a Defense Department inspector general review concluded that senior defense officials had acted appropriately before and during the riot.

 

The use of National Guard troops in the nation's capital is complicated by the fact that the usual chain of command headed by a governor does not apply because the district is not a state. Thus, the commanding general of the D.C. Guard reports to the president, although a 1969 executive order delegated control to the secretary of defense, who subsequently further delegated the authority to the Army secretary.

 

Kirby said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has amended the previous arrangement so the defense secretary is the sole authority for approval in certain circumstances. The Army secretary remains authorized to control Guard operations in the district and to consider district government requests for use of the Guard in the city for non-law enforcement purposes and in nonurgent situations.

 

Austin said law enforcement activities include crowd control, traffic control, search, seizure, arrest or temporary detention.

 

It was not immediately clear how this policy change might have affected the response time on Jan. 6, when a mob of supporters of then-President Donald Trump swiftly and violently overran the Capitol Police, which was assisted by the Metropolitan Police Department, and interrupted the certification of Joe Bidenโ€™s election victory. Lawmakers ran for their lives as the rioters climbed through broken windows and doors at the Capitol.

 

Prior to the riot, then-Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy handled requests for Guard deployments in the district, initially from the commander of the D.C. Guard. McCarthy acted in consultation with more senior Pentagon officials, including Christopher Miller, the acting secretary of defense at the time, and Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

 

Last spring, Austin ordered a review of how the Defense Department handles requests for support in the National Capital region, including approval authorities, request processes, planning, available forces, command relationships, staff support, and training exercises.

 

Based on that review, Austin amended the 1969 arrangement for handling certain requests for deployment of the Guard in the district, and he clarified the process by which federal and local agencies request assistance for both preplanned and time sensitive events in the district, Kirby said.

Confederate Monuments Will Likely Go to Black History Museum

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) โ€” Virginia and Richmond officials on Thursday announced a tentative agreement to transfer ownership of the city's now mostly removed Confederate monuments to the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia.

 

Included in the transfer would be an enormous statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee that was removed earlier this year, as well as the 40-foot-tall pedestal that held it. Pedestal removal work at the site is still underway.

 

Under the plan announced by Gov. Ralph Northam and Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney, the Black History Museum would work with The Valentine museum of Richmond and the local community to determine the memorials' fates.

 

The deal requires the City Councilโ€™s approval, which Stoney said he would seek next month. The arrangement would enable the community to take a deliberate approach in its reckoning with such divisive symbols, Stoney said in a statement.

 

โ€œEntrusting the future of these monuments and pedestals to two of our most respected institutions is the right thing to do,โ€ Stoney said.

 

Stoney directed the removal of the city's Confederate monuments last summer amid the protest movement that erupted after the police killing of George Floyd.

 

The statues have been in storage since then, at least part of that time at the city's wastewater plant. Not all of the pedestals have been removed.

 

Around the same time the city's statues were removed, Northam announced plans to remove the Lee statue, which was located on state property. But litigation tied up his plans until earlier this year.

 

The statue was removed in September, and work to take down the enormous pedestal began earlier this month.

Hundreds of Afghans Denied Humanitarian Entry into US

BOSTON โ€“ Haseena Niazi had pinned her hopes of getting her fiancรฉ out of Afghanistan on a rarely used immigration provision.

 

The 24-year-old Massachusetts resident was almost certain his application for humanitarian parole would get approved by the U.S. government, considering the evidence he provided on the threats from the Taliban he received while working on women's health issues at a hospital near Kabul.

 

But this month, the request was summarily denied, leaving the couple reeling after months of anxiety.

 

"He had everything they wanted," said Niazi, a green card holder originally from Afghanistan. "It doesn't make any sense why they'd reject it. It's like a bad dream. I still can't believe it."

 

Federal immigration officials have issued denial letters to hundreds of Afghans seeking temporary entry into the country for humanitarian reasons in recent weeks, to the dismay of Afghans and their supporters. By doing so, immigrant advocates say, the Biden administration has failed to honor its promise to help Afghans who were left behind after the U.S. military withdrew from the country in August and the Taliban took control.

 

"It was a huge disappointment," said Caitlin Rowe, a Texas attorney who said she recently received five denials, including one for an Afghan police officer who helped train U.S. troops and was beaten by the Taliban. "These are vulnerable people who genuinely thought there was hope, and I don't think there was."

 

Since the U.S. withdrawal, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has received more than 35,000 applications for humanitarian parole, of which it has denied about 470 and conditionally approved more than 140, Victoria Palmer, an agency spokesperson, said this week.

 

The little-known program, which doesn't provide a path to lawful permanent residence in the country, typically receives fewer than 2,000 requests annually from all nationalities, of which USCIS approves an average of about 500, she said.

 

Palmer also stressed humanitarian parole is generally reserved for extreme emergencies and not intended to replace the refugee admissions process, "which is the typical pathway for individuals outside of the United States who have fled their country of origin and are seeking protection."

 

The U.S. government, meanwhile, continues to help vulnerable Afghans, evacuating more than 900 American citizens and residents and another 2,200 Afghans since the military withdrawal. The state department said it expects to help resettle as many as 95,000 people from Afghanistan this fiscal year, a process that includes rigorous background checks and vaccinations.

 

Many of them, however, had been whisked out of Afghanistan before the U.S. left. Now, USCIS is tasked with this new wave of humanitarian parole applications and has ramped up staffing to consider them.

 

The agency said in a statement that requests are reviewed on an individual basis, with consideration given to immediate relatives of Americans and Afghans airlifted out.

 

And while USCIS stressed that parole shouldn't replace refugee processing, immigrant advocates argue that isn't a viable option for Afghans stuck in their country due to a disability or hiding from the Taliban. Even those able to get out of Afghanistan, they say, may be forced to wait years in refugee camps, which isn't something many can afford to do.

 

Mohammad, who asked that his last name not be used out of fear for his family's safety, said his elder brother, who used to work for international organizations, is among them. He has been in hiding since the Taliban came looking for him following the U.S. withdrawal, Mohammad said.

 

On a recent visit to the family home, Taliban members took his younger brother instead and held him more than a week for ransom, he said. Now, Mohammad, a former translator for U.S. troops in Afghanistan who lives in California with a special immigration status, is seeking parole for this brother, too. He hopes a conditional approval letter can get them a spot on one of the U.S. evacuation flights still running out of the country.

 

"I can provide him housing. I can provide him everything," he said. "Let them come here."

 

Immigrant advocates began filing humanitarian parole applications for Afghans in August in a last-ditch effort to get them on U.S. evacuation flights out of the country before the withdrawal.

 

In some cases, it worked, and word spread among immigration attorneys that parole, while typically used in extreme emergencies, might be a way out, said Kyra Lilien, director of immigration legal services at Jewish Family & Community Services in California's East Bay.

Billionaire Ronald Lauder blasts Hochul over universal mail-in voting

 

Conservative billionaire cosmetics heir Ronald Lauder is taking on Gov. Kathy Hochul over her push to allow universal no-questions-asked mail-in voting โ€” even though voters rejected the move in November.

 

The super PAC Safe Together in New York, bankrolled by Lauder, is currently airing a radio ad blasting Hochul over her continued support for a permanent option for everyone to be able to vote by mail.

 

Albany had approved a law that temporarily allowed the measure during the COVID pandemic to prevent transmission of the deadly bug at the polls.

 

But the state Board of Elections struggled with the massive expansion of mail-in balloting during the 2020 general election, including sending the wrong information to thousands of voters.

 

A year later, a referendum calling to make the option permanent for all registered voters โ€” not just those who are ill or immobile โ€” was defeated at the polls.

 

But Hochul wonโ€™t let it die, vowing last month to make the controversial ballot proposal a top priority in the 2022 legislative session.

 

โ€œWhat really makes me sick is professional politicians like Kathy Hochul,โ€ says a man suffering from a cold in the six-figure radio ad.

 

His spouse responds, โ€œYeah, I saw she decided she knows better than the 1.6 million voters who said no to playing games on voting and redistricting.โ€

Republicans and conservatives have long complained that mail-in balloting is more susceptible to voter fraud.

 

Lauder has plowed $5.6 million into the PAC, which in 2020 targeted state Democratic pols who voted for a law to relax bail for most criminal defendants. A longtime political activist and donor, Lauder unsuccessfully ran for New York City mayor in 1989.

 

Hochul, as with her fellow Democrats, has defended the expansion of mail-in balloting as a way of increasing voter participation.

โ€œYou want to end up in hospital, the most likely way to end up there from COVID is not to be vaccinated.

โ€œThe majority of cases that we're seeing in hospitals are people who are unvaccinated."

 

The Prime Minister said the next "most likely reason" people are still being hospitalised is because they have the Delta rather than the Omicron variant.

 

โ€œOmicron is overtaking now the Delta variant of this virus. The Omicron cases that are finding their way into the health system are very, very, very small.

 

โ€œAnd it's the same thing we're seeing, particularly overseas in the United Kingdom, where we've seen ICU rates and we've seen those on ventilators are remaining quite flat, despite the fact that even hospitalisation numbers have risen and even more so, case numbers."

His executive order gives a new task force 60 days to present plans, including a location, for the garden.

President Trump has defended Confederate symbols as a part of American heritage.

 

In a speech to mark Independence Day at Mount Rushmore, he condemned the anti-racism protesters who toppled statues.

 

He said America's national heritage was being threatened - an emotive appeal for patriotism.

 

The garden - to be in a place of natural beauty near a city - is to be opened by 4 July 2026, Mr Trump's executive order says. State authorities and civic organisations are invited to donate statues for it.

My last meeting with President Biden occurred on Tuesday, December 21st, more than a week before I began to experience symptoms. I tested negative that very morning. I have not been in the Pentagon since Thursday, where I met briefly - and only - with a few members of my staff. We were properly masked and socially distanced throughout.

NEW YORK, NYโ€”After photos emerged of AOC in South Florida enjoying brunch free of COVID restrictions and without wearing a mask, the congresswoman quickly clarified that she had actually been taken to Florida against her will by Governor Ron DeSantis.

 

"Ron DeSantis kidnapped me!" cried AOC to reporters. "He captured me and dragged me to Florida and held me hostage! And then he killed me. He killed me with Omicron. And now I am dead."

 

The media is now demanding answers from DeSantis. Additionally, the DOJ announced they will be sending resources to investigate the Florida governor for kidnapping and homicide.

 

"DeSantis is just another Republican who is creepily obsessed with AOC," said CNN anchor Brian Stelter between tearful sobs. "And he proved that by kidnapping and murdering her in cold blood. This is all Tucker Carlson's fault."

 

Further investigations found that AOC didn't actually die but was just knocked out from too many mimosas.

With at-home Covid-19 tests in high demand and their efficacy in question, health departments from California to Massachusetts are turning to sewage samples to get a better idea of how much the coronavirus is spreading through communities and what might be in store for health care systems.

 

Experts say wastewater holds the key to better understanding the public health of cities and neighborhoods, especially in underserved areas that do not have equal access to care.

 

โ€œEvery time an infected person uses the toilet, theyโ€™re flushing this information down the toilet, where itโ€™s collecting and aggregating and mixing with poop from thousands of other people,โ€ said Newsha Ghaeli, a co-founder and the president of Biobot Analytics, a wastewater epidemiology company based in Massachusetts.

 

โ€œEven if you canโ€™t access a test, youโ€™re still pooping,โ€ Ghaeli said. โ€œIt doesnโ€™t depend on you having access to health care or health insurance.โ€

VA's Coronavirus Cases Reach All-Time High

They vaccinated young soldiers that didnโ€™t need it, thats why!

 

WASHINGTON The Department of Veterans Affairs reported nearly 23,000 active cases of the coronavirus Wednesday more than at any other point during the pandemic.

 

The active case count reached 22,911 Wednesday, surpassing a high set in January. The record-breaking number of cases among VA patients reflects trends nationwide. The United States hit an all-time high this week of more than 265,000 new coronavirus cases per day on average, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

 

Experts blame the rapid spread on the newest coronavirus variant, Omicron, which scientists say is the most contagious strain yet. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical adviser to the president, warned Tuesday that the surge is expected to continue well into January.

 

"We're certainly going to continue to see a surge for a while," Fauci said on CNN.

 

Hospitals across the country have reported increases this week in patients admitted with coronavirus infections. As of Wednesday, 1,218 veterans had been hospitalized with the virus โ€“ an increase of 347 veterans, or 40%, in the last five days.

 

Active cases in the VA system have more than doubled since mid-December and increased more than 80% in the past week.

 

The Cleveland VA hospital in Ohio reported the most active cases Wednesday, with 1,406 veterans testing positive for the virus. The Houston VA hospital had the second-most cases with 733, and Washington, D.C., had the third highest number, with 732.

 

Of the 139 VA hospitals included in the department's database, 80 of them reported at least 100 active cases.

 

In total, the VA has reported more than 405,000 positive cases of the coronavirus since the pandemic began. During that time, 17,693 VA patients have died, as well as 237 agency employees.

 

Nearly 4 million veterans about 64.5% of all VA patients are vaccinated, according to VA data. Less than half of vaccinated veterans, about 1.2 million, have received a booster shot. Public health officials have recommended the booster shots as the best protection against the omicron variant.

 

"The bottom-line message here is that boosters bring back up that degree of protection,"Fauci said Wednesday during a news briefing. "Boosters are critical."

In November, two top leaders of the group, Nachman Helbrans and Mayer Rosner, were convicted by a federal court in New York of child sexual exploitation and kidnapping in a case involving a family that escaped from the cult.

 

Before leaving the cult, Amir filmed a video during which he described the brutality of the leaders, the lack of food and the extreme conditions at the compound. He sent the video to his cousins in Israel who flew to Guatemala and helped him leave. He has since been re-acclimating to life back in Israel, far away from the cult.

 

A year ago, though, Amir decided to return to Guatemala in order to save his young child, who is still being held by Lev Tahor.

 

Channel 12โ€™s Uvda investigative program followed Amir on his journey and aired a special report on Thursday revealing never before known details about the manner in which Lev Tahor operates.

 

After appealing to various Knesset members with no luck, Amir managed to recruit a former senior Shin Bet officer, Eshel Armoni, to assist him in extracting his now two-year-old son.

New NYC Mayor Eric Adams Will Keep De Blasio's Private Sector Vaccine Mandate, Plans Potential Expansions

 

New NYC Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, plans on keeping former Mayor Bill de Blasioโ€™s vaccine mandate for private employers. The mandate was announced by de Blasio in early December, who touted it as a โ€œfirst-in-the-nation measure.โ€

In the book "the dark night of the soul" we are often having painful experiences because you are being moved closer to the Truth of who you are. For exampleโ€ฆ A person starts coming closer to God but they have horrible impatience. So God gives them an illness, which is not enjoyable, but through the illness they become patient. Because they have to learn to become patient with themselves being sick. Then eventually the illness may leave and the person has more inner peace (where they meet the Creator) and they don't project their happiness on everything meeting their demands.

Coronavirus traces found in March 2019 sewage sample, Spanish study shows

MADRID (Reuters) - Spanish virologists have found traces of the novel coronavirus in a sample of Barcelona waste water collected in March 2019, nine months before the COVID-19 disease was identified in China, the University of Barcelona said on Friday.

The discovery of virus genome presence so early in Spain, if confirmed, would imply the disease may have appeared much earlier than the scientific community thought.

 

The University of Barcelona team, who had been testing waste water since mid-April this year to identify potential new outbreaks, decided to also run tests on older samples.

 

They first found the virus was present in Barcelona on Jan. 15, 2020, 41 days before the first case was officially reported there.

 

Then they ran tests on samples taken between January 2018 and December 2019 and found the presence of the virus genome in one of them, collected on March 12, 2019.

 

โ€œThe levels of SARS-CoV-2 were low but were positive,โ€ research leader Albert Bosch was quoted as saying by the university.

 

The research has been submitted for a peer review.

 

Dr Joan Ramon Villalbi of the Spanish Society for Public Health and Sanitary Administration told Reuters it was still early to draw definitive conclusions.

 

โ€œWhen itโ€™s just one result, you always want more data, more studies, more samples to confirm it and rule out a laboratory error or a methodological problem,โ€ he said.

 

There was the potential for a false positive due to the virusโ€™ similarities with other respiratory infections.

 

โ€œBut itโ€™s definitely interesting, itโ€™s suggestive,โ€ Villalbi said.

 

Bosch, who is president of the Spanish Society of Virologists, said that an early detection even in January could have improved the response to the pandemic. Instead, patients were probably misdiagnosed with common flu, contributing to community transmission before measures were taken.

 

Prof. Gertjan Medema of the KWR Water Research Institute in the Netherlands, whose team began using a coronavirus test on waste water in February, suggested the Barcelona group needs to repeat the tests to confirm it is really the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

 

Spain has recorded more than 28,000 confirmed deaths and nearly 250,000 cases of the virus so far.

Pennsylvania Democrat Commissioner Charged with Raping 15-Year-Old Boy

 

A Democrat elected official in Darby Township, Pennsylvania, has been arrested and charged with raping a 15-year-old boy.

 

Marvin Smith, a 50-year-old Democrat elected to the Darby Township Board of Commissioners in 2019, turned himself in to the Philadelphia Police Department late last week on charges of rape, sexual assault, and others related to the rape of a 15-year-old boy in 2017.

 

According to investigators, on August 12, 2017, Smith was in his vehicle when he approached the boy and offered to give him a ride. Smith lured the boy by claiming to be a family friend, investigators claim.

 

When the boy got into Smithโ€™s vehicle, Smith drove them to a park where he then allegedly raped the teen. Afterward, the boy told police that Smith dropped him off at an undisclosed location. The boy first filed a sexual assault complaint against Smith in April 2019 but an arrest warrant was not issued until November 22, 2021.

 

Smith remains listed as a Darby Township Commissioner on the local governmentโ€™s website. Smith remains in police custody on a $100,000 bail.

That the opportunistic parasite Toxoplasma-gondii, the ancient Egyptian cat goddess Bastet, and the ideas that inform Bruno Latourโ€™s Actor-network theory (ANT) all exist independently are not contested subjects. That they are unified has yet to be examined. The goal of this paper will be to situate these three seemingly disparate phenomena into an interactive web of possibilities that will prove useful for the disciplines of science, social science, mythology, philosophy, and other fields of study. Our first step will be to examine Kevin T. Laffertyโ€™s research on the eco-science of toxoplasmosis[1] in human agents and its cultural outcomes. Laffertyโ€™s work will lay the ground for a complimentary analysis of an ancient Egyptian dynamic that encouraged the (then unknown) proliferation of the parasite into the peopleโ€™s daily and spiritual life of upper and lower Egypt within the religio/mythic power symbolized in the guise of the female cat deity Bastet[2]. We will then conclude by demonstrating how the microbial and mythic agents (yes, toxoplasma-gondii is considered a non-human agent with agency, along with cats, humans, and Bastet etc.) will be placed into a non-hierarchical perspective of ANT by way of Bruno Latourโ€™s work concerning science, people, microbes, technology (mummification) which is an un-stratified way of understanding the relationships between all the actors/actants involved.

 

In a 2006 paper Lafferty proposes the idea that the parasite Toxoplasma-gondii has influenced human culture. Lafferty quotes J.P. Webster explaining that the parasite promotes the risk behavior of affected rodents โ€œT. gondii appears to manipulate rodent behavior in sophisticated ways that would increase transmission to domestic catsโ€ (2749). The infected rodents are said to engage in high risk activities so as to get caught and eaten by the cat, thus positioning the parasite in the body of its desired carrier. Felines are the ideal host for the parasite, but humans can become infected due to their proximity to cats as house pets, companions, and domestic pest control. โ€œThe reproductive phase of this protozoan lives in the cells that line the intestine of a feline. [And can] infect [other] cats or encyst in the brain and other tissues of a wide range of warm-blooded vertebrates, including humansโ€ (J.K.A. Beverly qtd. in Lafferty 2749). Once the parasite has infected a person, traceable personality traits are said to take place with noted variance between the genders, โ€œFor instance, in infected women, intelligence, superego strength [โ€ฆ] and affectothymia[3] [โ€ฆ] are higher, while infected men have lower intelligence, superego strength and novelty-seeking [โ€ฆ]; both infected men and women have higher levels of guilt-proneness [โ€ฆ]โ€ (Flegr [sic] and Hrdy [sic], qtd. in Lafferty 2749). Because T. gondii affects men and women in these gender specific ways, using the cultural research of Hofstede & McCrae, Lafferty โ€˜predictsโ€™ the outcome of โ€œโ€ฆhigher aggregate neuroticism[4]. Aspects of human culture associated with neuroticism are male control, materialism, rules and structure [and] that T. gondii could increase the cultural dimensions of โ€˜masculineโ€™ sex roles and uncertainty avoidanceโ€ (2551).

All of Laffertyโ€™s observations are pointing in a general direction: microbial agency. Before we incorporate that into Actor-network theory, let us refer to a number of studies that demonstrate the unlikely connection between T. gondii and the worship/mummification of cats in ancient Egypt. Mark Greener also postulates a similar argument with his independent research on T. gondii and its ancient roots (again including its link to schizophrenia), where he writes โ€œBastet might have evolved from the Middle Eastern Neolithic cat cult into a protective goddess, reflecting the catโ€™s critical role protecting from rodents the grain vital to the societyโ€™s survivalโ€ (ยถ13). It is common knowledge that Egyptian priests preformed the necessary mummification of cats to accompany and assist the petโ€™s owner in the afterlife. What is not widely known is that the deceased cats were mummified with the same meticulous care and attention to detail as their human counterparts (Owen 2004). It was due to this proximity to the animalโ€™s entrailsโ€”hence its waste productsโ€”that the priests would have easily contracted toxoplasmosis. There was not any awareness of microbial infection, and because of this there was not a concern for sanitary conditions by which to handle the human and animal corpses. Ancient Egyptian priests enjoyed a place of societal prestige (Porphyry ยถ8). This social position enabled the infected priests to promulgate the belief that cats were to be revered, this lead to the outright worship of the feline goddess Bastet. This confirms Laffertyโ€™s findings, whereby T. gondii infiltrates itself in a materialistic, male-dominated cultural pattern. This also affirms Laffertyโ€™s connection with the more stable and affable traits that are manifested in females when they become infected. Bastet was primarily known for her protective qualities. The importance of Bastet in ancient Egypt cannot be underestimated (BBC). It is only till now, in the 21stcentury, that we can finally bridge the gap and silence some of the mysteries behind the extreme reverence of cats to the time of the Egyptian pharaohs with this key symbiotic microbial/human relationship.

With all of this under consideration, let us finally position these findings within Actor-network theory (ANT). ANT was popularized by the French sociologist, philosopher Bruno Latour with Michel Callon in the 1980s (Crawford 1). As Crawford defines ANT, we are reminded of a critical feature

 

โ€ฆthe agency of nonhumans (machines, animals, texts, and hybrids, among others), [and] the ANT network is conceived as a heterogeneous amalgamation of textual, conceptual, social, and technical actors. The โ€˜volitional actorโ€™ for ANT, termed actant, is any agent, collective or individual, that can associate or disassociate with other agents (1).

 

This point is central to our argument because it positions the nonhuman T. gondii as an actor/actant on the same interactive level as the human and societal actors/actants. Latour in his book The Pasteurization of Francewrites at length on microbes as agents, for instance he writes โ€œWe have to add the action of microbesโ€ (35), and he later underscores this with โ€œโ€ฆthe action of the microbe redefined not only society but also the nature of the whole caboodleโ€ (38). Since Latour also positions ANT within a semiotic structure he privileges relationships within the network โ€œThere is no external referent. Referents are always internal to the forces that use them as touchstonesโ€ (166). The network of actors and actants becomes an entity weโ€™re not used to recognizing, because we typically think that the only actor worthy of our attention is human. What this could mean in terms of ANT and T. gondii is implicated in the way T. gondii is usually thought to have conscious agency. When we refer to the way T. gondii seems to be โ€˜controllingโ€™ its host we are situating it within a network whereby the human, cat, or mouse become victim to the parasiteโ€™s โ€˜willโ€™. In a strict scientific understanding, T. gondii is merely affecting the physiology and neurology of the infected host. But once we recognize that agency need not be only about the volitional, we can then allow for the simple and complex ways micobes, humans and culture reverberate with unstratified connectivity. Crawford helps to define ANT by showing that itโ€™s non-essentialist (1). To this concept Latour writes โ€œโ€ฆwe should not decide a-priori what the state of forces will be beforehand, or what will count as a forceโ€ (155). The same can also be said for the weaknesses (155). What this means is that we cannot (with ANT) suggest that one actorโ€™s role is essentially stronger or weaker that the otherโ€”ANT insists on a level playing field with no winners and losers. One actor is not more important than another. โ€œNothing is, by itself, either reducible or irreducible to anything elseโ€ (Latour 158).

 

Suddenly our prayers are answered. Reality becomes fiction and vice-versa. Our fetid microbial actor T.gondii becomes an ancient deity, mice are less risk averse, cats are coddled, men become domineering, and womenโ€™s superego is pronounced. But, now the most pressing question to ask is: in this non/fictional network who plays who?

Alyssa Farah Griffin, who served as former US President Donald Trump's director of strategic communications, believes Trump is receiving โ€œterrible adviceโ€ from current advisers by scheduling a news conference on the one-year anniversary of the deadly January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

 

In an interview withCNNโ€™sKaitlan Collins, Farah Griffin suggested that the upcoming January 6 โ€œwould be a wise day for [Trump] to stay silent, to let those who were victims on Capitol Hill talk about that very important and solemn day."

 

She noted that the idea of Trump holding a conference was proof that those around him are misleading the former president.

 

โ€œ[Trump] has also announced he'll be hosting a press conference [January 6] which, I think, if anything, proves he's still getting terrible advice from folks around him," she said.

 

Farah Griffinโ€™s concern is reportedly centered on rhetoric she expects Trump to deliver at the event as she does not believe he will be apologetic or acknowledge the harm done on January 6. Instead, the former aide believes the one-term commander-in-chief will continue to baselessly push that the 2020 election was stolen from him personally, and that those who participated in the deadly Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack were justified.

 

โ€œI think instead you'll hear a very sort of, you know, the tone from him that this was โ€” reiterating the lies that the election was stolen, saying that those who are being tried for the insurrection are political prisoners," she said.

 

The fanning of the same rhetoric that led to the Capitol attack on its anniversary could put congressional Republicans in a difficult position, Farah Griffin believes.

 

โ€œIt's going to put Republicans on Capitol Hill in a very, a very tight position to be in,โ€ she offered, adding, โ€œwhat side of this are they going to come down on?"

 

Trump remains popular within the GOP, according to some polls, and most Republican lawmakers have been wary to directly defy his version of events. Some, including Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), have tried to downplay the January 6 attack.

 

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t look like an armed insurrectionโ€ฆI donโ€™t condone it โ€“ but theyโ€™re staying within the rope lines in the rotunda,โ€ Johnson previously said of the event. Congressman Andrew Clyde (R-GA) has suggested that, "you would actually think it was just a normal tourist visit" when recalling the riot.

 

Many Republicans have opted to remain quiet on the fallout from the violence, instead focusing their attacks on the ongoing probe by the US House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol as a way to support Trump without condoning the actions of the attackers.

A self-proclaimed โ€œmillionaireโ€ from Utah allegedly kidnapped a woman for weeks and held her captive in his home where he repeatedly beat her and carved the number six into her hand to represent the womanโ€™s six-month deadline to โ€œlove him or be killed.โ€

 

Ramone Marcio Martinez, 39, of Salt Lake City, was arrested on Dec. 29 and charged with aggravated kidnapping and assault, according to local reports.

 

The victim, whose identity was not revealed, managed to escape with a single text message to her friend saying she was being held captive. The friend told police, which prompted the investigation.

 

โ€œThe victim had texted him begging for help and that she was scared for her life,โ€ according to a police booking affidavit, obtained by ABC 4.

 

Police responded to Martinezโ€™s home, where he answered the door holding a handgun inside the front pocket of his hoodie.

 

According to the affidavit, police found the victim with bruises around both of her eyes. She complained of rib pain and difficulty breathing.

 

She told police that she had been assaulted six times on the previous day alone, according to KSL.

 

โ€œAt another point in time (he) grabbed the victim and held a knife to her throat. Again at another point in time, (Martinez) grabbed a knife and carved the number โ€˜6โ€™ into the victimโ€™s left hand stating that she had six months to love him or be killed. And lastly, at some point during the day, the victim stated (Martinez) grabbed a gun and pointed it at her head,โ€ according to the affidavit.

 

The woman told officials Martinez strangled her to the point of urination twice. He also threatened her with a knife and gun and beat her with a belt, which caused bruising to her face.

 

After he was detained, he was taken to the hospital to check for high blood pressure where he confessed to strangling the woman, the affidavit says. He then later admitted he had planned to move the woman to another residence in Arizona the night of his arrest.

 

Police recommended that Martinez be held without bail due to his cache of firearms and access to large amounts of money. He told police he was a โ€œmillionaireโ€ with businesses in California, Oregon and Arizona.

 

A LinkedIn profile shows that Martinez is the CEO of Truu Med, a medical cannabis doctor referral service. For a fee, the company will connect patients with a doctor that will write a letter on behalf of the patient. He appeared on a local news outlet last year to discuss his business.

Man charged following fire at Old Parliament House

 

This is a joint media release between the Australian Federal Police and ACT Policing

 

A 30-year-old Victorian man has been charged in relation to a fire that police will allege was deliberately lit at Old Parliament House on Thursday (30 December 2021).

 

The AFP-led joint taskforce with ACT Policing has been investigating the matter under Operation Pike since Thursday.

 

ACT Policing detectives made the arrest, with the support of ACT Policing and Australian Federal Police resources, about 8.20pm Sunday, 2 January 2022, in Parkes, ACT.

 

The man has been charged with arson and damaging Commonwealth property and is expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday (4 January 2022).

 

This arrest is in addition to three other arrests made on Saturday (1 January 2022) by ACT Policing. These people faced court on Sunday (2 January 2022).

 

One of the three was charged with three counts of assaulting a frontline service provider, the second was charged with one count of assaulting a frontline service provider and the third was charged with hindering a Territory official.

 

The Taskforce under Operation Pike will continue investigations to identify other people involved in the fire and other criminal activity and further arrests may occur.

This weekโ€™s Golden Horseshoe is awarded to the Biden administration for the billions of dollars in military equipment left behind for the Taliban after the botched U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

 

The spending watchdog Open The Books found $89.2 billion in military equipment, including training, was provided to Afghan security forces during Americaโ€™s longest running war.

 

The sophisticated military equipment left behind included Blackhawk helicopters, attack aircraft, tens of thousands of vehicles, and 650,000 weapons.

 

"The hasty withdrawal of U.S. military forces in Afghanistan turned the Taliban into a major U.S. arms dealer for the next decade,โ€ Open The Books CEO and Founder Adam Andrzejewski told Just The News. โ€œThe Taliban is going to be selling tickets to their terrorist gun show."

 

The equipment left behind includes 650,000 weapons, including 350,000 M4 and M16 rifles, 65,000 machine guns, 25,000 grenade launchers, and 2,500 mortars and howitzers, Andrzejewski said.

 

The watchdog found the United States provided 75,000 military vehicles including 50,000 light- and medium-tactical vehicles, 22,000 Humvees, and 928 mine-resistant vehicles to Afghanistan since 2001.

 

Andrzejewski detailed other military equipment provided to the Afghan National Army and security forces.

 

It included 110 Black Hawk helicopters, which cost $21 million each; 20 A-29 Super Tucano attack aircraft, which cost $21.3 million each; and 7 C-208 light attack airplanes at $12.1 million each. Those airplanes, he noted, are very sophisticated and carry anti-tank missiles and Hellfire missiles.

 

Other U.S.-funded surveillance and reconnaissance equipment included six Aerostat surveillance balloons, valued at $8.9 million each; eight ScanEagle drones valued at $1.4 million each; and over 16,000 night vision devices valued at approximately $80 million.

 

Andrezejewski said President Biden did not anticipate the collapse of the Afghan Nation Army and his initial budget to Congress included billions more for the forces.

 

โ€œIn fact, Biden's budget to Congress FY2022 had $3 billion more for the Afghan forces. The president never saw the swift collapse of the national army and was caught completely flat-footed,โ€ he said.

 

Biden this week signed the $787 billion National Defense Authorization Act which for FY2022 funds the the Department of Defense, for Department of Energy national security programs, and for the Department of State.

 

โ€œThe Act provides vital benefits and enhances access to justice for military personnel and their families, and includes critical authorities to support our countryโ€™s national defense,โ€ Biden said.

 

"The Biden Administration promised a 'peace dividend' from leaving Afghanistan.
