o test the effect of CBD on SARS-CoV-2 replication, we pretreated A549 human lung carcinoma cells expressing exogenous human ACE-2 receptor (A549-ACE2) for 2 hours with 0–10 μM CBD prior to infection with SARS-CoV-2. After 48 hours, we monitored cells for expression of the viral spike protein (S). For comparison, we also treated cells over a similar dose range with an MLK inhibitor (URMC-099) previously implicated as an antiviral for HIV (12) and KPT-9274, a PAK4/NAMPT inhibitor (13) that our analysis suggested might reverse many changes in gene expression caused by SARS-CoV-2. All three inhibitors potently inhibited viral replication under non-toxic conditions with EC50s ranging from 0.2–2.1 μM (Fig. 1A). CBD inhibited SARS-CoV-2 replication in Vero E6 monkey kidney epithelial cells as well (fig. S1A). No toxicity was observed at the effective doses (fig. S1B). We also determined that CBD suppressed replication of a related beta-coronavirus, mouse hepatitis virus (MHV), under non-toxic conditions with an EC50 of ~5 μM using A549 cells that express the MHV receptor (A549-MHVR), indicating the potential for more broader viral efficacy (fig. S1C,D).

When isolated from its source plant, natural non-synthetic CBD is typically extracted along with other cannabinoids, representing the unavoidable residual complexity of natural products. To verify that CBD is indeed responsible for the viral inhibition, we analyzed a CBD reference standard as well as CBD from three different sources for purity using 100% quantitative NMR (qNMR). These sources included two chemical vendors (Suppliers A and B) and one commercial vendor that used natural materials (Supplier C). The striking congruence between the experimental 1H NMR and the recently established quantum-mechanical HiFSA (1H Iterative Full Spin Analysis) profiles observed for all materials confirmed that 1) the compounds used were indeed CBD with purities of at least 97% (Fig. 1B) and 2) congeneric cannabinoids were not present at levels above 1.0% (11). Analysis of these different CBD preparations in the viral A549-ACE2 infection assay showed similar EC50s with a range from 0.6–1.8 μM likely reflecting the intrinsic biological variability of the assay (Fig. 1C). No toxicity was observed for any of the CBD preparations at the doses used to inhibit viral infection (fig. S1 E–G).

CBD is often consumed as part of a C. sativa extract, particularly in combination with psychoactive THC enriched in marijuana plants. We therefore determined whether congeneric cannabinoids, especially analogues with closely related structures and polarities produced by the hemp plant, are also capable of inhibiting SARS-CoV-2 infection. Remarkably, only CBD was a potent agent, while limited or no antiviral activity was exhibited by the structurally closely related congeners that share biosynthesis pathways and form the biogenetically determined residual complexity of CBD purified from C. sativa: THC, cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), cannabidivarin (CBDV), cannabichromene (CBC), or cannabigerol (CBG) (Fig. 2 A–B; see Methods). None of these compounds were toxic to the A549-ACE2 cells in the dose range of interest (fig. S2). Notably, combining CBD with THC (1:1) significantly suppressed CBD efficacy consistent with competitive inhibition by THC.

The suit alleges a February 4, 2021 report by CNN correspondent Donie O’Sullivan titled, "CNN Goes Inside A Gathering Of QANON Followers," falsely accused Valerie Flynn of following the movement. (CNN)

The suit accuses O’Sullivan’s report of selectively editing and altering a clip that Michael Flynn posted to his Twitter account on July 4, 2020. According to the suit, the video originally showed a July 4 barbeque at Valerie’s home in which each family member "individually took an oath to the United States Constitution, the same oath taken by Members of Congress," in order to demonstrate patriotism.

"The entire family then exclaimed, ‘God Bless America.’ In the altered clip used in the O’Sullivan report, CNN intentionally edited out the oath to the United States Constitution and omitted the words ‘God Bless America,’ fraudulently making it appear and insinuating that Valerie pledged an oath of allegiance to QAnon. By its editing and production of the O’Sullivan report, CNN intended and endorsed the defamatory meaning," according to the lawsuit.

"Although it knew nothing about Valerie, CNN consciously chose to include Valerie in the edited clip. The clip conveyed a very powerful (but untrue) message: that Valerie pledged her allegiance to QAnon. CNN made no effort in the O’Sullivan report to dispel that notion," the suit continued, noting that footage of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot was intertwined with footage of her family.

"The O’Sullivan report intentionally misrepresented and actively sought to conceal what oath Valerie was actually taking," according to the suit. "Valerie is not a follower of any violent, extremist or terrorist groups, including QAnon. CNN’s false statements subjected Valerie to hatred, distrust, ridicule, contempt and disgrace."

CNN declined comment when reached by Fox News Digital.

The lawsuit also alleges that "CNN’s false attributions exposed Valerie to public scorn, ridicule and contempt, and lowered her esteem in the community, causing insult, embarrassment, humiliation and substantial injury to her reputation" and enjoyed life as a private citizen prior to CNN "egregiously" defaming her.

"They were a product of CNN’s imagination and desire to hurt General Michael Flynn," the suit states. "CNN is a Democratic Party trumpet. CNN recruits, hires and promotes journalists who share its extreme ideology and political viewpoints. CNN harbors an institutional animosity, hostility, hatred, extreme bias, spite and ill-will towards the Flynn family, and, in particular, General Flynn."

Flynn is seeking $25 million in compensatory damages and $75 million in punitive damages.

Each day, an estimated 72,500 vehicles cross a bridge on the southbound lanes of Highway 101 over railroad tracks at the Montalvo Metrolink station in Ventura.

In Santa Barbara County, bridges on the northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 101 over San Jose Creek, west of Highway 217 in Goleta, carry about 60,500 vehicles every day.

And in northern San Luis Obispo County, a Highway 101 bridge in Templeton takes about 31,000 vehicles every day over Las Tablas Road.

All of these bridges are considered to be in “poor” condition by the Federal Highway Administration, making them some of the highest-trafficked bridges in the tri-county region with a “poor” rating.

According to FHA data, there are at least 71 bridges in the region in poor condition, including some along Highway 101 and major arterial roads that see tens of thousands of vehicles each day. Santa Barbara County has 30 bridges in poor condition, San Luis Obispo County has 24 and Ventura County has 17.

There are 1,309 total bridges across the tri-counties in the FHA’s database; 53% are rated in “good” condition and 41% in “fair” shape. The federal database uses bridge records included in the 2020 National Bridge Inventory, a collection of bridge element data submitted to the FHA by states and federal agencies.

The bridge that collapsed Jan. 28 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was rated “poor” by the FHA. However, a “poor” rating does not mean a bridge is “necessarily unsafe to drive on,” said John Waddell, a deputy director of the San Luis Obispo County Public Works Department.

Bridges found to be in “poor” condition need “a significant amount of work” and have “appropriate restrictions,” such as weight limitations, Waddell said.

“There’s signage or traffic control to reduce risk, so you don’t have a large city bus driving over a bridge and it collapses like in Pennsylvania,” he said.

Bridges in “fair” condition are showing some wear and might need maintenance work in the future, Waddell said, but many don’t have any repairs currently recommended.

San Luis Obispo County has plans to replace several bridges rated “poor” and perform significant repair work to get others out of the “poor” category, but it’s a multi-year process, Waddell said.

Almost a decade after NSA whistleblower Ed Snowden with the help of journalists Glen Greenwald and Laura Poitras exposed that the National Security Agency had long swept up American citizens' communications in a flagrant and persistent violation of citizens' Fourth Amendment rights, it was revealed late Thursday night that the CIA has long had its own secret domestic spy program that collects American data.

New documents have just been declassified after a Senate inquiry into the data collection program. According to the Associated Press on Friday,"The CIA has a secret, undisclosed data repository that includes information collected about Americans,two Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee said. While neither the agency nor lawmakers would disclose specifics about the data, the senators alleged the CIA had long hidden details about the program from the public and Congress."

The senators charged that the secret program has been operating "outside the statutory framework that Congress and the public believe govern this collection" - which also without doubt means mass data collection without any level of court authorization, judicial review, or individual warrants.

Further, the Central Intelligence Agency as the foreign intel collection wing of the federal government is barred from operating on domestic soil or investigating Americans, which remains the purview of the FBI. CIA officers have no legal jurisdiction whatsoever, especially when it comes to US citizens….

The AP further details of the senators' letter that "the CIA’s bulk collection program operates outside of laws passed and reformed by Congress, but under the authority of Executive Order 12333, the document that broadly governs intelligence community activity and was first signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981."…

In a separate follow-up statement,Snowden warned, "The CIA is not your friend. The CIA is not a friend of the United States. The CIA is a friend of power, and power alone."

The presidents of Russia and the US will hold a phone call on Saturday, Kremlin has confirmed

US President Joe Biden will phone Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday evening Moscow time, the Kremlin said Friday. The call came after a written request of the White House, and the two leaders are supposed to discuss the current tensions over Ukraine.

While Sullivan’s descriptions of an impending Russian attack on Ukraine matched the reports circulating in the US media on Friday, he said that such reports were not true because the White House believes a decision to attack has not yet been made in Moscow.

White House says Russia could aim for “regime change” in Kiev with air strikes, ground attack

The White House announced on Friday it believes Russia has everything in place to invade Ukraine “any day now,” urging American citizens to leave because there is no chance of a US military evacuation such as the one from Afghanistan.

President Joe Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, told reporters that “an invasion could begin at any time” should Russian President Vladimir Putin give the order, and could even “begin during the Olympics.”

Urging all American civilians to leave Ukraine while they can still use commercial travel means, Sullivan warned there is “no prospect of a US military evacuation in the event of a Russian invasion.”

An invasion by Russia “is likely to begin with aerial bombing and missile attacks,” while the subsequent ground attack would disrupt communications as well. “No one would be able to count on air, rail, or road departures once military action got under way,” said Sullivan.

Sullivan’s phrasing matched that of PBS National Security correspondent Nick Schifrin, who shortly before the White House press conference cited anonymous US officials to claim that Russia had in fact decided to attack. When asked about these reports, Sullivan said he had “not yet seen” them but they were wrong, and that the White House does not believe Russia has made a decision either way.

Pressed to provide details, Sullivan said the US intelligence community has assessed that Russian troop build-up near Ukraine suggests a “very distinct possibility that Russia might choose” to take military action “on a reasonably swift timeframe,” adding there is a “credible prospect” that this might happen in the coming days.

The intelligence community has “sufficient confidence” that there is a “distinct possibility” Putin “might” order an invasion before February 20, Sullivan told reporters, and that a “rapid assault on the city of Kiev” is considered a possibility.

He also repeated State Department spokesman Ned Price’s claim that Russia is working to fabricate a pretext for invasion with a “false flag operation” in eastern Ukraine. Just like Price, Sullivan offered no evidence for the claim.

Moscow has repeatedly rejected US allegations it plans to invade Ukraine as “fake news.”

Miller demonstrates in his new book, "A Conspiratorial Life: Robert Welch, the John Birch Society, and the Revolution of American Conservatism," published this month by the University of Chicago Press.

"Like the fundamentalists of the 1920s, many Birchers did disengage when it became an embarrassment to be associated with the Society," Miller writes. "Welch's followers were seen as crackpots, deplorables, losers who did not fit into the modern world." But rather than disappear, the Birchers just assumed a lower profile. And today, the ideas they promoted "are everywhere — even in the White House. Even in your own house."

Miller's book constitutes the first full-scale biography of Welch, which is surprising in and of itself, considering the impact the Birchers had on American politics, as the most successful anti-Communist organization in U.S. history. And it takes an impressively long view, beginning almost 200 years before Welch's birth, on the North Carolina farms worked by his forebears — initially too poor to be slave-owners, and later on, consumed with elaborate paranoia about shadowy forces conspiring to take their human property away. Hayes is an influential interpreter of the writings of Q, who inspired the QAnon conspiracy theory that believes prominent people, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, will be arrested for various crimes. While he acknowledged that many have spent the last three years waiting for the arrests, which never came, he argued the disappointment was part of the plan all along.

Speaking with Patrick Gunnels on the Reading Epic Threads webcast on Thursday, Hayes said Q warned people he would put out a lot of "disinformation." It was designed to "make the bad guys make wrong moves," according to Hayes.

Russia attempted a rescue operation after a Su-24M was shot down at the Syria–Turkey border on 24 November 2015, a video of Free Syrian Army 1st Coastal Division using a TOW missile to destroy a disabled Russian helicopter on the ground after its crew had retreated was posted on YouTube. In October 2015, Saudi Arabia delivered 500 TOW missiles to anti-Assad rebels. A video produced through Bulgarian Television provides evidence of non-rebel use of this weapon by Islamic affiliated fighters.

Reports indicate that small number of TOW missiles have ended up in the hands of al-Qaeda in Syria and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

In August 2016 footage of the Syrian military inspecting a captured BGM-71E missile system in Bani Zeit district, Aleppo, was leaked online. On 2 September 2016, rebels released a video of a BGM-71 TOW destroying a French-manufactured Syrian Air Force Aérospatiale Gazelle as it was landing on an airstrip near Khattab in Northern Hama.

Reports say that the TOW missile has successfully hit Russian T-90s in Syria, which are equipped with active defences designed to defeat such missiles. However, a Russian report claims the tank shows "very little damage" and was still operable.

World Economic Forum Blasted for ‘Insane Pro-CRT Propaganda’ Video

The World Economic Forum came under fire online, being accused of promoting “divisive” propaganda after it released an explainer pushing critical race theory along with an accompanying essay describing racism as “persistent and prevalent” everywhere.

Against the backdrop of classrooms and racial protests, the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) video published on Tuesday begins by asking what critical race theory (CRT) is and why it’s “so controversial.”

CRT supporters say “it’s a way to understand and tackle racial inequality,” the video explains, while opponents say it “does the opposite.”

The nearly two-minute clip defines CRT as a theory “first developed by US legal scholars in the 1980s” that “argues that the laws, rules and, regulations that govern society today have been shaped by the historical subordination of people of colour and that this is a driving force behind racial inequality today.”

The short-form clip lists only one example of such supposed inequality: the high number of incarcerated black males throughout the country.

“Take the US criminal justice system, for example,” it says. “While everyone is seen as equal under the law, Black Americans are imprisoned at 5 times the rate of white people.”

“CRT says this disparity is a legacy of America’s racist past,” it claims, adding that opponents complain that it “paints all white people as bigots.”

The video asserts that CRT supporters maintain that “a system doesn’t need racists working within it to produce racially imbalanced outcomes” and that the theory serves as “a lens through which to view racial inequality today.”

“Most importantly, it recognizes that racism is not a relic of the past and that by understanding its underlying causes we can start to build a more just society,” it states.

The clip, which has received over 230,000 views on Twitter as of Thursday evening, concludes by asking viewers, “What do you think about CRT?”

However, the post immediately links to an essay for readers to “learn more about racial equality” in which racism is described as “persistent and prevalent in every community, country and continent,” with “systemic and structural barriers hav[ing] long denied access and opportunity for leaders of colour.”

In response to the clip, many big names called out the Switzerland-based globalist organization, accusing it of pushing Marxism and propaganda.

“Insane pro-CRT propaganda video,” wrote author, writer, and researcher Christopher Rufo, who is also a senior fellow and director of the initiative on CRT at the Manhattan Institute.

California Democrat introduces vaccine mandate bill for all workplaces

California lawmakers are considering a bill that would impose a statewide COVID-19 vaccine mandate at all workplaces, Politico reported Friday.

Democratic Assemblywoman Buffy Wicks introduced the bill, claiming that the only way for the pandemic to end is by mandating vaccination.

“The pathway to endemic, for us to get back to some sense of normalcy, is through vaccines,” she told Politico.

Wicks' bill would impose severe financial penalties on businesses that do not comply and is all but certain to face opposition as Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) begins to lift other pandemic restrictions. The governor is set to ease masking requirements and indoor social distancing restrictions as COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations have fallen since the Omicron variant surge this winter.

Although fewer cases and hospitalizations are encouraging, Wicks said her bill is necessary because the pandemic remains unpredictable.

“It has seemed like things are moving in the right direction many times before with this virus, and yet there we were with another wave,” Wicks said.

The vaccine mandate legislation is the latest proposal to come from the state legislature's Vaccine Work Group, a caucus of lawmakers formed to advance bills intended to mitigate COVID-19 spread and combat vaccine misinformation.

Other bills introduced by members of the vaccine caucus include a bill that would allow any child 12 or older to consent to receive an FDA-approved vaccine without parental say-so and a statewide school vaccine mandate with no exemptions.

According to Politico, Wicks considered introducing the vaccine mandate bill last year but never followed through with her idea. Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has blocked President Joe Biden's federal vaccine mandate on businesses with more than 100 employees from taking effect, she says state lawmakers have an opportunity to act.

Workplaces of all sizes, as well as contractors, would fall under the mandate. Exemptions would only be permitted for religious or medical reasons. New hires would have to show proof of having at least one vaccine dose by their start date and show documentation of a second dose within 45 days, according to Politico.

Wicks' bill would not include a testing option for workers who do not want to get vaccinated, addressing concerns about who would pay for the tests. If the bill passes, California workers at every business would be given an ultimatum: Get jabbed or get fired.

The Democrat also said lawmakers are considering vaccine legislation that would affect customers entering businesses.

To the editor: Your editorial states that human sex trafficking is not increased by big sporting events and the link with the Super Bowl is a "myth" and a lie.

Space won't allow me to articulate the academic studies that validate the exceptional spike in prostitution advertisements, or rescue organizations and survivors' accounts that vehemently disagree with your callous remarks. Additionally, law enforcement officers with their own experiences dealing with sex trafficking crimes understand a much different reality from your editorial dismissal.

Just last weekend, 14 individuals were arrested for sex trafficking-related offenses at a single hotel associated with Super Bowl activities, with a number of those arrested traveling from other regions of the country. Isolated? Not at all. Just as the region has seen a flood of counterfeit merchandise and other illicit opportunists related to the Super Bowl, sex trafficking similarly follows.

Additionally, Times readers deserve more from your editorial board than cynicism and your insulting declaration that law enforcement promotes these "myths" because it's good for business. Comparing law enforcement's description of the reality of increased sex trafficking during mega events to lies about the coronavirus, stolen elections and QAnon is offensive.

We've seen firsthand the lives lost because people are willing to sell others' bodies. I invite one of your editors to spend some time with our investigators and rescue organizations. Perhaps it could help inform the editorial board and improve your perspective of our officers' integrity and dedicated work.

To the editor: You had the audacity to write, "Yes, the public should be reminded of the persistent problem of trafficking." That sounds like a statement about smog in L.A. — it's so persistent.

No! Sex trafficking is a crime. It's about vulnerable, poor, young girls and boys caught in a cycle of violence, often with nowhere to turn for help, and it often involves profit-seeking organized crime.

With the Super Bowl coming to Inglewood, I participated in the SOAP Project last Sunday (Save Our Adolescents From Prostitution), delivering bars of hotel-size soaps with a hotline number on them. Of the 21 hotels we visited, all gladly received the resource as an alternative to 911.

Based on advanced fighter jet technology, 2,000-mile distances are doable, and the shorter distance provides some useful possibilities for China — not just in launching an attack, but in constructing more lily-pad atolls.
