Putin Said Russia Was Targeting Nazis in Ukraine – The Azov Battalion Is a Nazi Group in Ukraine

Regardless of his motives, when Putin said he was going to focus on Nazis in Ukraine he likely knew of the Azov Battalion.

Not many Americans have heard of the Azov Battalion. Apparently, NBC was unaware of this group on February 14th when it aired preparations being made for a Russian attack into Ukraine using the Azov Battalion as its example. This was captured immediately by those in the know. In a news broadcast Monday evening, NBC’s chief foreign policy correspondent Richard Engel told viewers how “some communities” in Ukraine are preparing for a war with Russia by “taking matters into their own hands.” The report showed Ukrainian soldiers delivering “basic training for the whole family,” “first aid” and “weapons training” to a small group of Mariupol residents, including children and the elderly. One of them, 79-year-old Valentyna Konstantynovska, wielding an AK-47, was made the face of “Ukrainian resistance” by the world’s newspapers. Engel left out of his account the fact that the military formation providing Konstantynovska’s training was the neo-Nazi Azov Battalion, clearly identifiable by its Wolfsangel insignia used by Hitler’s SS in the Second World War.

A July 17, 2014 report drafted by the Viral Hemorrhagic Fever Consortium, accused Metabiota Inc. of failing to abide by an existing agreement on how to report test results and for bypassing the Sierra Leonean scientists working there. Military Experiments on biting insects

Entomological warfare is a type of biological warfare that uses insects to transmit diseases. The Pentagon has allegedly performed such entomological tests in Georgia and Russia.In 2014 The Lugar Center was equipped with an insect facility and launched a project “Raising Awareness about Barcoding of Sand Flies in Georgia and Caucasus”. The project covered a larger geographic area outside of Georgia – Caucasus. In 2014-2015 Phlebotomine sand fly species were collected under another project “Surveillance Work on Acute Febrile Illness” and all (female) sand flies were tested to determine their infectivity rate.A third project, also including __sand flies __collection, studied the characteristics their salivary glands.

As a result Tbilisi has been infested with biting flies since 2015. These biting insects live indoors, in bathrooms, all year long, which was not the typical behaviour of these species in Georgia previously (normally the Phlebotomine fly season in Georgia is exceptionally short – from June to September). Local people complain of being bitten by these newly appeared flies while naked in their bathrooms. They also have a strong resistance to cold and can survive even in the sub-zero temperatures in the mountains.

Biting Flies in Dagestan, Russia

Since the start of the Pentagon project in 2014 flies similar to those in Georgia have appeared in neighboring Dagestan (Russia). According to local people, they bite and cause rashes. Their breeding habitats are house drains.

Ukraine conflict: What is Swift Monetary Transfer System and why is banning Russia so significant?

The move aims to hit the country's banking network and its access to funds via Swift, which is pivotal for the smooth transaction of money worldwide.

What is Swift?

Swift is the global financial artery that allows the smooth and rapid transfer of money across borders. It stands for Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication.

Created in 1973 and based in Belgium, Swift links 11,000 banks and institutions in more than 200 countries. But Swift is not your traditional High Street bank. It is a sort of instant messaging system that informs users when payments have been sent and arrived. It sends more than 40 million messages a day, as trillions of dollars change hands between companies and governments. More than 1% of those messages are thought to involve Russian payments.

Who owns and controls Swift?

Swift was created by American and European banks, which did not want a single institution developing their own system and having a monopoly. The network is now jointly-owned by more than 2,000 banks and financial institutions. It is overseen by the National Bank of Belgium, in partnership with major central banks around the world - including the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England. Swift helps make secure international trade possible for its members, and is not supposed to take sides in disputes. However, Iran was banned from Swift in 2012, as part of sanctions over its nuclear programme. It lost almost half of its oil export revenues and 30% of foreign trade. Swift says it has no influence over sanctions and any decision to impose them rests with governments.

How will banning Russia from Swift affect it?

At this stage, it is not known which Russian banks will be removed from Swift. This is expected to become clear in the coming days. The statement from EU, the US, the UK and others said the move would "ensure that these banks are disconnected from the international financial system and harm their ability to operate globally". The aim is for Russian companies to lose access to the normal smooth and instant transactions provided by Swift. Payments for its valuable energy and agricultural products will be severely disrupted. Banks would be likely to have to deal directly with one another, adding delays and extra costs, and ultimately cutting off revenues for the Russian government. Russia was threatened with a Swift expulsion before - in 2014 when it annexed Crimea. Russia said the move would be tantamount to a declaration of war. Western allies did not go ahead, but the threat did prompt Russia to develop its own, very fledgling, cross-border transfer system. To prepare for such a sanction, the Russian government created a National Payment Card System, known as Mir, to process card payments. However, few foreign countries currently use it.

Russia is the European Union's main provider of oil and natural gas, and finding alternative supplies will not be easy. With energy prices already soaring, further disruption is something many governments want to avoid. Companies owed money by Russia would have to find alternative ways to get paid. North Korean Hackers Tied to $100 Million in SWIFT Fraud

A gang of North Korean government hackers, known as APT38, has been waging a sophisticated hacking campaign against banks in Asia and Africa, resulting in the theft of more than $100 million via fraudulent transfers through SWIFT, the global money-transfer network, says U.S. cybersecurity firm FireEye. The advanced persistent threat group's activities appear to overlap but be separate from the North Korean hacking groups known as Lazarus and Temp.Hermit, FireEye says. The APT designation typically refers to attackers that wage long, sustained and stealthy attacks against preselected targets. "Since at least 2014, APT38 has conducted operations in more than 16 organizations in at least 11 countries, sometimes simultaneously, indicating that the group is a large, prolific operation with extensive resources," FireEye researchers say in a Wednesday blog post. FireEye says it's tied the group to the Pyongyang-based government of North Korea thanks in part to a Department of Justice criminal indictment against alleged hacker Park Jin Hyok (see Feds Charge North Korean With Devastating Cyberattacks). It also cited separate technical reports published by Moscow-based cybersecurity firms Group-IB and Kaspersky Lab. FireEye says there appear to be multiple, semi-independent hacking groups sponsored by the North Korean government that share malware development resources (see Cybercrime Groups and Nation-State Attackers Blur Together). APT38's activities overlap with and appear to be a subset of another known North Korean hacking group called Temp.Hermit. Both APT38 and that subgroup are linked with Lab 110, which is either part of - or synonymous with - the 6th Technical Bureau in North Korea's Reconnaissance General Bureau. RGB "is believed to leverage front organizations to mask their activities, including infiltrating networks and gathering intelligence," FireEye says in a separate, 32-page report (PDF).
