A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Biden administration from eliminating the pandemic health program known as Title 42 on May 23. The decision delays what Homeland Security officials said would result in an unprecedented influx of migrants to the U.S.-Mexico border. It is a victory for three Republican states that filed the action in early April, which has now been joined by 18 other states. The suit was brought in early April in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. Crews tackle 'ferocious' fire at Harlow sausage factory

 

A large fire at a sausage factory is being tackled by 70 firefighters from across Essex and Hertfordshire.

BHR ('Bohai Harvest RST') is a private equity firm and one of Hunter's two major Chinese business ventures. The joint venture was co-owned by the state-controlled Bank of China.

 

Hunter's personal attorney, George Mesires, is a partner at Faegre Baker Daniels, now called Faegre Drinker.

 

A separate October 2018 invoice from the law firm shows Hunter spent a total $68,933.41 on the 'restructuring' beginning in September 2016.

There are plenty of rational arguments to justify wiping Twitter off the face of the planet. First of all, much like other Big Tech-controlled platforms, Twitter is a censorship cesspool operated by Silicon Valley elites who are prone to radical groupthink. Itโ€™s an app laced with manipulative algorithms and politically motivated shadowbanning.

 

Musk can try to serve justice by reinstating The Babylon Bee and every other account that fell victim to Twitterโ€™s reckless political censorship. He can add an edit button and give me a blue checkmark, but that wonโ€™t change how the corrupt press or other Big Tech companies treat speech that they donโ€™t like.

 

Speaking of free speech, Twitter is far from the pro-First Amendment social media company that it was ostensibly created to be and Iโ€™m personally not convinced that the โ€œTechno-king of Tesla,โ€ whose success is sustained by government subsidies, has the power to fix it.

 

Itโ€™s also a platform that induces and profits off of doom-scrolling, which leads to heightened anxiety and worsening mental health. I mean, even the former Twitter guy admitted that his creation is crawling with abominable content and behavior.

 

To put it simply, Twitter is unsalvagable. Even if Musk manages to replace current CEO Parag Agrawal and clean house of all the fragile employees, an eery, anti-free speech culture still drives the corporate reporters, media outlets, Democrat politicians, and many of the trolls who use the platform.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has accused London of a โ€œdirect provocationโ€ after British Armed Forces Minister James Heappey encouraged Ukrainian forces to use UK-supplied weapons to attack targets inside Russia. Any attempts to do so would invoke an immediate response, the ministry warned in a statement on Tuesday.

 

โ€œWe want to emphasize that Londonโ€™s direct provocation of the Kiev regime to such actions, should they attempt to do so, will immediately lead to our proportional response. As we have warned, the Russian armed forces are on standby around the clock to retaliate with long-range high-precision weapons against decision-making centers in Kiev,โ€ the military warned.

 

The ministry went on to say that โ€œadvisers from one of the Western nationsโ€ located in these centers โ€œwonโ€™t necessarily be a problemโ€ in Russiaโ€™s decision-making regarding retaliatory measures.

 

Earlier in the day, Heappey said Kiev can use UK-supplied weapons to launch attacks on Russian territory, dismissing fears that this would lead to an international escalation.

 

โ€œIt is completely legitimate for Ukraine to be targeting in Russiaโ€™s depth in order to disrupt the logistics that if they werenโ€™t disrupted would directly contribute to death and carnage on Ukrainian soil,โ€ Heappey told Times Radio.

 

The UK has been among the top arms suppliers of Kiev, pouring thousands of anti-tank missiles into the country ahead of the large-scale Russian military operation that kicked off in late February. Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently announced an additional ยฃ100 million ($130 million) package of heavy weaponry for Kiev, which includes anti-aircraft weapons, drones, and various armored vehicles.

 

Moscow has warned the West against ramping up weapon supplies, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stating that the conflict has effectively turned into a โ€œproxy warโ€ waged by NATO against Russia. The countryโ€™s military has repeatedly targeted depots where these supplies are amassed and will continue doing so, he said.

Ukraine wants $2bn per month from US

 

Finance Minister Sergey Marchenko has said his country hopes to raise $3bn in international assistance on top of that

 

Ukraineโ€™s finance minister, Sergey Marchenko, has solicited at least $2 billion per month in emergency economic aid from the Biden administration. The official also revealed that Kiev hopes to raise an additional $3 billion per month from other sources.

 

Speaking to the Washington Post, Marchenko said that Ukraine needs โ€œto cover this gap right now to attract the necessary finance and win this war.โ€

 

During his visit to Washington, DC last week, Marchenko met with a number of senior US officials, warning them that absent the requested financial support, Ukraine would likely not be able to cope with the humanitarian crisis brought on by Russiaโ€™s military offensive. A total of $5 billion per month is needed to cover Ukraineโ€™s immediate needs in April, May, and June, the minister explained. In addition to that, Kiev is expected to request another tranche down the road to help Ukraine recover from all the damage incurred.

 

Last Thursday, the minister also reportedly attended a private dinner hosted by Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo, which included representatives from top US firms such as Goldman Sachs, and the Business Roundtable lobbyist association. Moreover, Marchenko met with Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen during the G20 summit in Washington last Wednesday.

The WHO, if these amendments are approved, will obtain the authority to declare an international health emergency, overriding national governments.

 

In a sense, that already happened in 2020 and 2021, when many of the strictest lockdowns were advised by the WHO and most nations went along with them. In Major Reversal After Warning Of Nuclear War, Germany Approves Tanks For Ukraine

 

In a major reversal following Chancellor Olaf Scholz only days ago voicing strong resistance, it appears Berlin has bowed to the mounting pressure among allies and approved new tank deliveries to Ukraine from Germany's own stock, which Scholz had previously said was depleted.

 

The German Ministry of Defense announced Tuesday that delivery of Gepard anti-aircraft tanks to Ukraine has been approved. As part of Scholz's earlier rejection of sending heavy weapons systems, he had cited the potential for the West and Russia sliding into a WW3 and nuclear war scenario.

 

Axios reports that "The new shipment of the German-made Flakpanzer Gepard was announced by Germany's Minister of Defense Christine Lambrecht during a meeting with more than 30 defense officials from dozens of NATO and non-NATO countries at Ramstein Air Base."

 

Among the officials there at Ramstein for the meeting which was focused on how to help Ukraine defeat the Russian invasion were US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin - the latter fresh off his trip with Secretary of State Blinken to Kiev where they met with President Zelensky. Representing Ukraine at the Ramstein meeting was Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov.

 

As for Scholz's prior very clearly articulated warnings against sending items like tanks direct from Germany to the Ukrainians, here's what he told Spiegel in an interview published only last Fridayโ€ฆ

 

"We need to do everything to avoid a direct military confrontation between NATO and a heavily armed superpower such as Russia, a nuclear power," the chancellor said at the time. "I will do everything to avoid an escalation that could lead to World War III โ€“ there can be no nuclear war."

'NATO Expansion' In Reality Means Placing Territories Under US Command: Lavrov

 

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has charged that 'NATO expansion' in reality means that the United States wants to bring more territories under its command, with an eye towards bolstering its power in maintaining a unipolar world.

 

He said in live comments on Russia's Channel One that it's not at all about fulfillment of the Western military alliance's "statutory goals" - the official line from Brussels notwithstanding - but is about "development of territories under the US command".

 

The remarks were reported and translated in state media sources, coming at a moment that Finland - which shares an over 800 mile land border with Russia - is strongly mulling seeking NATO membership after Sweden indicated it would begin moving toward formal application.

 

Lavrov said: "Of course, when they accepted Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, how can they strengthen the security of the North Atlantic alliance, if it is a defensive alliance?"

 

And then answered his own question with:

 

"This simply shows that NATO expansion has nothing to do with the fulfillment of its statutory goals, that this is the development of territories under the US command in line with strengthening and attempting to perpetuate that same unipolar world."

 

Lavrov followed by giving an anecdote in support of his claimโ€ฆ that in the run-up to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the US side showed absolutely no interest in any level of compromise regarding Moscow's clearly articulated security interests.

 

In effect the Russian top diplomat is saying NATO HQ ultimately bows to the dictates of Washington. He went on to say the same thing about Ukraine's government as well:

 

"And as before, many of us are convinced that the real position of Ukraine is determined in Washington, London and other Western capitals. And therefore, our political scientists say, why talk with the Zelensky team โ€” you need to talk with the Americans, and you need to negotiate with them, and achieve some kind of agreement. But we still continue to negotiate with the team that Zelensky nominated, these contacts will continue," FM Lavrov added.

 

Two weeks ago he had said something along similar lines, explaining for the first time that the overarching goal of Putin's decision to launch the 'special operation' in Ukraine is "meant to put an end" to both NATO expansion and US global domination.

 

He said at the time, "Our special military operation is meant to put an end to the unabashed expansion [of NATO] and the unabashed drive towards full domination by the US and its Western subjects on the world stage," according to RT.

Polish PM Says Warsaw Has Delivered Tanks to Ukraine

 

The US and NATO have been sending heavier weapons to Ukraine despite warnings from Russia

 

On Monday, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Warsaw has delivered tanks to Ukraine as the US and its NATO allies are working to provide Kyiv with heavier weapons despite warnings from Moscow.

 

Morawiecki wouldnโ€™t detail what types of tanks or how many were sent to Ukraine. Earlier this month, the Czech Republic sent over a dozen Soviet-designed T-72 tanks, and other NATO members are planning to get more tanks into Kyivโ€™s hands.

 

In the face of criticism for not sending heavy equipment into Ukraine, Germany announced a plan last week to backfill the stocks of European countries that have Soviet-made equipment that can be used by Ukrainian forces. Slovenia is expected to send a large number of T-72 tanks to Ukraine in exchange for German-made Marder tanks, and Fox wheeled tanks.

 

The UK announced Monday a plan to send Stormer armored vehicles armed with anti-aircraft missile launchers to Ukraine. โ€œI can now announce to the House that we will be gifting a small number of armored vehicles fitted with launchers for those anti-air missiles,โ€ British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said.

 

The Pentagon said last week that Kyiv has received fighter jets but wouldnโ€™t say which country they came from. Poland had previously offered to transfer MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine by giving them to the US first, but the Pentagon backed out of the plan.

 

Earlier this month, Russia formally asked the US to stop arming Ukraine, and Russiaโ€™s ambassador to the US made a fresh warning on Monday. โ€œWhat the Americans are doing is pouring oil on the flames,โ€ Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov said. โ€œI see only an attempt to raise the stakes, to aggravate the situation, to see more losses.โ€

Rose was charged with molesting children, and the documents prove the department knew, and allowed him to continue to serve in their ranks and even engage with children.

 

Rose was originally charged with 33 counts in connection with the rape and abuse of at least six children in the 1990s. Some of the charges included statutory rape and indecent assault and battery on a child. This week, Rose pleaded guilty to rape charges involving the horrific and repeated rape of multiple young children.

 

โ€œSome of these victims describe being sexually assaulted upwards of 200 times,โ€ said Assistant District Attorney Audrey Mark.

 

Roseโ€™s victims were sometimes 6, 7 or 8 years old, prosecutors said, and he raped the six victims in his West Roxbury home over the course of 30 years until 2020.

 

โ€œBy virtue of his position, he had their trust, and he violated it over and over. He violated their bodies. And these children, and these adult survivors will live with that trauma for the rest of their lives,โ€ Mark said after the court listened to victim impact statements.

 

โ€œI am so sorry to each and every one of you. Please try to accept that I am solely responsible, and not let your hatred destroy who you are or each other,โ€ the disgraced police union boss said as he was shackled in the courtroom on Monday.

 

Unfortunately, despite the nature of his charges, Rose was only sentenced to 10-13 years in prison, followed by 10 years of probation.

 

โ€œWhile there is no punishment or condemnation too severe for a man guilty of the atrocious crimes committed by Pat Rose, we hope todayโ€™s decision will bring with it some small level of comfort, closure and vindication for the victims and their families,โ€ Boston Police Patrolmenโ€™s Association President Larry Calderone said in a statement.

 

Absent from the guilty plea were any mentions of the documents which showed that his fellow cops allowed Roseโ€™s abuse to go on for decades.

 

The documents were redacted copies of internal affairs investigations into Rose. Last year, Boston Mayor Kim Janeyโ€™s office said the information was released to shed light on the baffling case of how Bostonโ€™s top cop was allowed to go on abusing children for decades.

"Open Society is proud to support Governing for Impact's efforts to protect American workers, consumers, patients, students and the environment through policy reform," Tom Perriello, executive director of Soros' Open Society Foundations, told Fox News Digital.

 

"Their work gives voice to people often overlooked in a regulatory environment too often dominated by corporate interests," he continued. "Our support for Governing for Impact's work is publicly available on our website and we are transparent about our enthusiasm for their victories for American workers and families."

 

GFI, however, works to remain secretive. It is invisible to internet search engines like Google (an unrelated "Govern for Impact" is the only group that appears in a search). No news reports or press releases appear on its existence outside of a mention of its related action fund in a previous Fox News article on the $1.6 billion Arabella Advisors-managed dark money network, to which it is attached.

 

But as the group attempted to conceal its operations, it sought talent on Harvard Law School's website, which was discoverable. The posting, which no longer appears on the site, was for legal policy internships.

 

The Harvard advert said the group was established to prepare the Biden administration for a "transformative governance" and that it had produced "more than 60 in-depth, shovel-ready regulatory recommendations" for dozens of federal agencies.

The amendments proposed by the United States would also give the Director General of the WHO the legal authority to unilaterally issue an โ€œintermediate public health alert (IPHA).โ€ The criteria for the issuance of an IPHA is simply that โ€œthe Director-General has determined it requires heightened international awareness and a potential international public health response.โ€

Pressed by media over the offshore-related revelations late last year, Mykhailo Podoliak, an adviser to Zelenskyโ€™s chief of staff, assured that the president had been forced to create the offshores to โ€œprotectโ€ income from the โ€œaggressive actionsโ€ of the โ€œcorruptโ€ government of President Viktor Yanukovych. โ€œJournalists have de facto confirmed the presidentโ€™s absolute respect for the standards of anti-corruption legislationโ€, Podoliak said.

Judge Orders Wisconsin Assembly Election Investigation to Stop Deleting Records

 

On Thursday, Dane County Circuit Court Judge Frank D. Remington ordered the Wisconsin Assemblyโ€™s Office of Special Counsel (OSC) โ€œnot to delete or destroy any recordโ€ that could be responsive to public records requests American Oversight previously filed. The ruling came one day after American Oversight asked the court to bar OSC from continuing to delete records in its custody, a practice that the office had admitted to in a letter earlier this month.

 

In that letter, sent on April 8, OSCโ€™s counsel stated that the office โ€œdoes not retain any unnecessary documentsโ€ and instead โ€œevaluatesโ€ whether new documents in its custody are โ€œof use to the investigation.โ€ OSC then โ€œroutinely deletesโ€ documents found to be โ€œirrelevant or useless,โ€ according to the letter. The letter was included with an April 8 production of additional documents that OSC claimed had been โ€œinadvertentlyโ€ excluded from earlier productions.

 

On Wednesday, American Oversight filed two motions asking the court to order OSC to stop deleting records and to consider imposing additional damages or finding OSC in contempt of an earlier court order.

 

The letter from OSCโ€™s counsel also indicated that its position was that the office was not generally required to retain records absent a pending open records request โ€” a view that was rejected more than six months ago by the Wisconsin Legislative Council and is in clear violation of Wisconsinโ€™s public records retention law.

 

Following his order, Remington set a scheduling conference for Tuesday, April 26.

General data findings

 

The report is based in findings made by the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU). The OHCHR estimates the total number of conflict related detentions in Ukraine from 14 April 2014 to 30 April 2021 as between 7900 and 8700 (approximately 85% men and 15% women), of which it is estimated that 3600-4000 were committed by Government actors and 4300-4700 by armed groups and other actors in territory controlled by the self-proclaimed republics.

 

The OHCHR estimates that about 60% of all conflict-related detentions by Government actors from 2014 to 2021 (approximately 2300) were arbitrary and most of them occurred during the initial stage of the conflict (2014-2015). From 2016, the prevalence of arbitrary detention by Government actors decreased substantially.

 

As to the conflict related detentions by armed groups and other actors in territory controlled by the self-proclaimed republics, these lacked any semblance of legal process during the initial stages of the conflict, and a more formalized approach started to be seen in 2015 with the introduction of the figures of โ€œadministrative arrestโ€ (in Donetsk territory) and โ€œadministrative detentionโ€ (in Luhansk territory). As of April 2021, arbitrary detention remains to be a daily occurrence in territories controlled by the self-proclaimed republics.

 

In 2014 and early 2015, various armed groups used more than 50 improvised detention facilities (often called โ€œbasementsโ€) to hold detainees. In some of these facilities, such as the ones of the case studies, torture and ill-treatment were carried out systematically.

 

The OHCHR found a strong correlation between conflict related arbitrary detention and torture and ill-treatment in both Government controlled territory and territory controlled by the self-proclaimed republics. After 2016, torture or ill-treatment became less common on both sides of the contact line.

 

Methods of torture and perpetrators

 

Methods of torture and ill-treatment on both sides of the conflict line included beatings, dry and wet asphyxiation, electrocution, sexual violence on men and women (rape, forced nudity and violence to the genitals), positional torture, water, food, sleep or toilet deprivation, isolation, mock executions, prolonged use of handcuffs, hooding and threats of death or further torture or sexual violence or harm to family members.

 

Among Government actors, the most common perpetrator of arbitrary detention and torture was the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). During the initial phases of the conflict, โ€œvolunteer battalionsโ€ were also regular perpetrators.

 

In territory controlled by the self-proclaimed republics, the main perpetrators were various armed groups and later, members of the โ€œministries of state securityโ€.

 

The right to an effective remedy has been severely undermined by the lack of effective investigation into allegations of arbitrary detention, torture and ill-treatment. The number of individuals brought to responsibility for these acts are small in comparison with the estimated numbers of violations and indicates the prevailing impunity for perpetrators.

Europeโ€™s Hypocritical History of Cannibalism

From prehistory to the present with many episodes in between, the region has a surprisingly meaty history of humans eating humans

 

In 2001, a lonely computer technician living in the countryside in Northern Germany advertised online for a well-built man willing to participate in a mutually satisfying sexual act. Armin Meiwesโ€™ notice was similar to many others on the Internet except for a rather important detail: The requested man must be willing to be killed and eaten.

 

Meiwes didnโ€™t have to look far. Two hundred and thirty miles away in Berlin, an engineer called Bernd Brandes agreed to travel to Meiwesโ€™ farmhouse. There, a gory video later found by police documented Brandesโ€™ consensual participation in the deadly dinner. The cannibalism was both a shock to the German public and a conundrum to German prosecutors wanting to charge Meiwes with a crime.

 

Cannibalism might be humanityโ€™s most sacred taboo, but consent of a victim typically eliminates a crime, explains Emilia Musumeci, a criminologist at the University of Catania, in Italy, who studies cannibalism and serial killers.

 

More technically, cannibalism is not designated as illegal in Germanyโ€™s extensive criminal code: Until that point, laws against murder had sufficed to cover cannibalism. If Brandes had volunteered his own life, how could Meiwes be accused of murder?

 

Because of his victimโ€™s consent, Meiwes was initially found guilty of something akin to assisted suicide, and sentenced to eight years in jail. Had there not been widespread uproar about the seemingly lenient penalty, Meiwes would be out of jail by now. Instead, the uproar led to a subsequent retrial, where Meiwes was found guilty of killing for sexual pleasure. He will likely spend the rest of his life in jail.

 

The unusual Meiwes case is just one of the topics to be discussed this weekend at an interdisciplinary cannibal conference to be held at the Manchester Museumโ€”the worldโ€™s first, say many attending the meeting.

 

The idea of a cannibalism conference might sound like the basis for a macabre joke about coffee-break finger food. However, thereโ€™s serious cannibal scholarship taking place in many disciplines, says conference organizer Hannah Priest, a lecturer at Manchester University, who has previously hosted other academic meetings on werewolves and monsters under the banner of her publishing company Hic Dragones. โ€œFrom contemporary horror film to medieval Eucharistic devotions, from Freudian theory to science fiction, cannibals and cannibalism continue to repel and intrigue us in equal measure,โ€ advertises the conferenceโ€™s website.

 

When the call for abstracts went out last fall, โ€œour first response was one from anthropology, another one was on heavy metal music and the third was on 18th-century literature,โ€ Priest says. โ€œAcademics will quite happily discuss very disturbing things in quite polite terms and forget that not everybody talks about this stuff all the time.โ€

 

It is perhaps fitting that the conference should take place in Europe because the region has a long chronicle of cannibalism, from prehistory through the Renaissance, right up to the 21st-century Meiwes case. In addition, the area has bequeathed us a bounty of fictional cannibals, including Dracula, who is arguably the worldโ€™s most famous consumer of human blood and a gory harbinger of the current pop culture fascination with vampires and zombies.

 

Europe boasts the oldest fossil evidence of cannibalism. In a 1999 Science article, French paleontologists reported that 100,000-year-old bones from six Neanderthal victims found in a French cave called Moula-Guercy had been broken by other Neanderthals in such a way as to extract marrow and brains. In addition, tool marks on the mandible and femur suggested that tongue and thigh meat had been cut off for consumption.

 

The cannibalism at Moula-Guercy wasnโ€™t an isolated incident in prehistory. In the past decade, researchers have reported other evidence that Neanderthals continued eating each other until just before their disappearance. In one particularly grisly discovery at the El Sidrรณn cave in Spain, paleontologists discovered that an extended family of 12 individuals had been dismembered, skinned and then eaten by other Neanderthals about 50,000 years ago.
