Runaway pet duck leads police to missing North Carolina woman’s body

Published: Apr. 25, 2022, 1:00 p.m.

A pet duck helped police located the body of a woman who has been missing since 2020.

ABC 13 News reports how Nellie Sullivan has first been reported missing from her home in Chandler, N.C., under what Sgt. Mark Walker of the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office calls “suspicious circumstances.”

However, no progress had been made on the elderly woman’s case for years. That is, until a couple of weeks ago.

WPXI Channel 11 News continues to report how residents of a trailer in the area were chasing after their pet duck when it ducked beneath the mobile home. The two went in after it, coming upon Sullivan’s body in the process.

“If I could give that duck a medal, I would,” adds Walker.

Local 12 WKRC-TV states that the discovery of Sullivan’s body helped to strengthen the case against her granddaughter, Angela Wamsley, and Mark Barnes. The pair were already serving jail time with concealing another death—among other charges—in connection to the case, reportedly setting cops “on a wild goose chase” and causing them to dig at sites where they knew the body wasn’t actually buried.

“Since the beginning of this investigation we have sought to locate Ms. Sullivan’s remains, afford her the respect she deserved, and restore dignity to the life she once lived,” says Captain of the Criminal Investigation Division, Angie Tullis, according to the office’s Facebook page. “We are dedicated to utilizing all available science, technology, and investigative skills necessary for justice to be served in this case.”

Walker believes Wamsley and Barnes murdered Sullivan in order to collect her social security and retirement benefits, as well as to refill her prescriptions.

The official cause of death has yet to be released.

Monday marks the 46th anniversary of the “greatest play in baseball” by Chicago Cubs centerfielder Rick Monday who’s quick thinking stopped a protester from burning an American flag on the field.

As the Cubs faced the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium on April 25, 1976, a pair of protesters ran out onto the field in the bottom of the fourth inning with an American flag doused in lighter fluid.

The pair tried to light the flag on fire using matches they brought for the purpose, but Marine Corps veteran and Cubs centerfielder Rick Monday wasn’t having any of that.

Monday bolted across the field and yanked the flag right out from under the anti-American protesters.

The crowd leapt to its feet in applause and the scoreboard broke out in a message reading “Rick Monday… you made a great play.”

On the air during the broadcast, legendary Dodgers announcer Vin Scully famously said, “It looks like he’s gonna burn a flag!” And added, “Rick Monday runs and takes it away from him. … I think somebody was going to set fire to the American flag. Can you imagine that.”

“If you’re going to burn the flag, don’t do it around me,” Monday said immediately after the Dodgers 5–4 win. “I’ve been to too many veterans’ hospitals and seen too many broken bodies of guys who tried to protect it.”

“I don’t know what I was thinking,” added Monday, who spent six years as a Marine. “But I knew what they were doing was wrong.”

The protesters, a father and son pair who had trespassed onto the field, were arrested. William Errol Thomas was fined $60 and sentenced to a year probation, but his son wasn’t charged since he was an 11-year-old juvenile at the time.

“It angered me for a lot of reasons,” Monday told NBC Sports on a past anniversary of his iconic moment in history. “First of all, you’re interrupting the game. Secondly, now you’re bringing out a flag, and I was only about three or four years removed from being in the Marine Reserves.”

Years later, Monday was asked if he was annoyed by the fact that his entire 19-year MLB career is overshadowed by the flag incident. He replied, “if that’s all I’m known for that’s not a bad thing at all.”

Monday also said, “It’s a good thing I did get it because I did not want any of my former drill instructors from the Marine Corps to come and say, ‘Hey Marine! Why did you stand there and watch when they ignited the American flag?'”

Monday began his MLB career with the Athletics in 1966 before joining the Cubs in 1972. He ended his career playing on the field that witnessed his “greatest play,” when he signed on with the L.A. Dodgers from 1977 to 1984.

The agency did not specify where the children lived. However, ABC11 was able to independently confirm neither child lives in the ABC11 viewing area.

"It may not happen again," said UNC Health pediatric gastroenterologist Dr. Steven Lichtman. "But it's very rare that we'd have two or three acute liver failure patients in the hospital at one time."

Lichtman said both children ended up on a liver transplant list, which caught the attention of pediatricians across the region.

"It is an odd coincidence. I mean, it doesn't make any sense," he said.

The best line of defense, said Lichtman, is washing your hands, which you would normally do to prevent the spread of illness.

Whether or not the illnesses are coincidences or the start of something much larger still remains to be seen.

"I think both answers are right. I mean, we'll know in the near future if this is the beginning stage now," said Lichtman. "So is this going to be it for all of North Carolina or are they going to start showing up more? That would be pretty shocking. And then, like you said, would it be the beginning of something but right now…we don't think so. But nothing. We don't understand it perfectly, to be honest."

Experts also ruled out the possibility of toxic water in the area where both patients live.

Many Twitter employees reportedly went "absolutely insane" on Monday after Elon Musk's acquisition of the social media platform was finalized.

What happened?

Immediately after the $44 billion purchase was announced, Twitter employees began voicing outrage and shock in private chat rooms. A New York Times reporter described internal communication channels as "absolutely insane."

"I feel like im going to throw up..I [really] don’t wanna work for a company that is owned by Elon Musk," one Twitter employee told a New York Times reporter.

"I don’t [really] know what I’m supposed to do…oh my god, my phone’s been blowing up," that employee continued. "I feel like he’s this petulant little boy and that he’s doing this to troll…he doesn’t know anything about our policies and what we do…his statement about our [algorithm] was f***ing insane… Were just gonna let everyone run amok?…nobody knows."

The Daily Beast reported that another Twitter employee wrote on Blind, an anonymous social media platform, that "Musk is dishonest, clueless and mentally ill." One employee even bashed fellow employees who support Musk, saying, "Elon fan boys are braindead mouth breathers."

Company leaders held an all-staff meeting with employees Monday afternoon. A chief concern among them was Musk's promise to transform Twitter into a platform that embraces free speech.

According to the Washington Post, employees are worried Musk will break down the "safeguards" Twitter has implemented "to protect" its users from content that Twitter deems is "harmful" or "unsafe" or misinformation.Other employees are worried about their permanent work-from-home situation, while others expressed concern about their company stock and whether layoffs are in the future, the New York Times reported.

However, some Twitter employees also expressed optimism about the future of their workplace.

"Elon did not tie up 20 percent of his net worth to destroy Twitter," one employee told the Washington Post. "I personally think a change like this may be what Twitter needs."

"In principle, I don't believe anyone should own or run Twitter," he reacted. "It wants to be a public good at a protocol level, not a company. Solving for the problem of it being a company however, Elon is the singular solution I trust. I trust his mission to extend the light of consciousness."

Despite the weeping and gnashing of teeth by some employees, Musk has not announced any changes to Twitter.

Instead, Musk released a statement after his purchase expressing desire to improve Twitter — not destroy it.

"I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans. Meanwhile, Twitter locked out employees from making changes to Twitter's source code, preventing angry employees from sabotaging the platform, Bloomberg reported.

“I have the utmost respect for the mission of the Office of Inspector General and the comprehensive work that went into the report prepared by Mr. Horowitz and his staff,”Durham saidin a statement.

“However, our investigation is not limited to developing information from within component parts of the Justice Department. Our investigation has included developing information from other persons and entities, both in the U.S. and outside of the U.S.”

Durham had an immediate reaction to Horowitz’s 434-page report.

Barr seized on these criticisms to insist “the FBI launched an intrusive investigation of a U.S. presidential campaign on the thinnest of suspicions, that, in my view, were insufficient to justify the steps taken.”

“It is also clear that, from its inceptionthe evidence produced by the investigation was ‘consistently exculpatory’” Barr said.
