China bank protest stopped by health codes turning red, depositors say

SHANGHAI, June 14 (Reuters) - A protest planned by hundreds of bank depositors in central China seeking access to their frozen funds has been thwarted because the authorities have turned their health code apps red, several depositors told Reuters.

The depositors were planning to travel to the central province of Henan this week from across China to protest against an almost two-month block on accessing at least $178 million of deposits, which has left companies unable to pay workers and individuals unable to access savings. read more

Rights groups have warned China could use its vast COVID surveillance infrastructure to stifle dissent. Without a green code on their smartphone app, citizens lose access to public transport and spaces such as restaurants and malls, as well as the right to travel across the country.

"They are putting digital handcuffs on us," said a depositor from Sichuan province surnamed Chen, who declined to use his full name for fear of government retribution.

The Henan provincial government, the National Health Commission and the Ministry of Public Security did not respond to requests for comment.

After recent COVID outbreaks, some regions in China have asked travellers to register their plans online.

A man surnamed Liu, who lives in Hubei province, found that his health code turned red on the morning of June 12 after he registered the day before to travel to Henan.

Liu had planned to travel to a protest planned for Monday in the Henan provincial capital Zhengzhou, where he had hoped to get his money back. The protest would have been the latest among numerous such demonstrations in Henan in recent months.

More than 200 depositors were similarly blocked when their health codes turned red, according to members of a WeChat group.

It could not be ascertained if the change in code was intended to block the protesters or for another reason, but three depositors told Reuters they knew people who had registered to travel to Henan, who were not connected to the frozen funds, whose codes did not turn red.

Yu Zhou Xin Min Sheng Village Bank, Shangcai Huimin Country Bank and Zhecheng Huanghuai Community Bank froze deposits on April 18, with all three telling customers they were upgrading internal systems. read more

Liu, who declined to give his full name for fear of government repercussions, said his child may not be able to go to school if his code does not soon revert to green.

"I can't do anything, I can't go anywhere. You're treated as though you're a criminal. It infringes on my human rights," said Liu.

Wang Qiong, who lives in the central city of Wuhan, found her health code had turned red after she registered to travel to Henan on June 11.

"The police had my identity details from the last time I went to protest in April," said Wang, who said she has lost access to 2.3 million yuan ($341,550).

Other depositors told Reuters they were able to arrive in Zhengzhou by train and car but their codes turned red as soon as they scanned city health codes.

BREAKING: Active shooter alert issued by Joint Base San Antonio Lackland. Authorities are responding to reports of gunshots heard off base

UPDATE: The San Antonio Police Department reported at 10:26 a.m. that patrol officers are investigating a “shots fired” call off Medina Base Road, just outside Lackland’s gate. According to SAPD, there is no active shooter on base at this time, and there is no threat to the public. Officers are still looking into the incident.

On Tuesday, June 14, at 10 a.m., an active shooter alert was issued for Lackland Air Force Base.

Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland was placed on lockdown due to reports of gunshots off-base.

JBSA said in a tweet that security forces and local law enforcement are responding to reports in the area of the base.

According to an email sent to employees, all facilities in the Southwest area of Valley Hi and Truemper are on lockdown, and people are advised to take cover, KSAT reported.

It is currently unknown whether anyone was injured or where the shots were fired.

Since announcing his bid to buy the company, Musk has encountered a number of issues that he sees as potentially endangering to the deal, including the company's failure to be upfront about the true number of bot accounts populating the site.

Attorneys for the billionaire entrepreneur say Twitter's stonewalling on the issue amounts to a "clear material breach of Twitter’s obligations under the merger agreement."

The company has said it will resolve the issue and move ahead with the agreement.

The pill caused the woman to wind up in the emergency room “bleeding heavily and nearly went into a coma,” the documents state. She was hospitalized for two days with “the abortion pill possibly reacting with potential street drugs in her system” at the time she drank the smoothie, according to the documents.

When the alleged relationship began in 2012 Miller was working for the prominent Republican ad firm Jamestown Associates.

The court documents were filed Sept. 14 in Miami-Dade Circuit Court as part of an ongoing custody battle between Miller and Delgado. With the allegations entered into court record, Delgado asked for Miller to undergo psychological evaluation, saying she fears for their son’s safety.

“I’m concerned for my safety (more importantly, my son’s) with Miller and afraid of his reaction if I add comment,” she said to Splinter News.

Delgado conceived a son during an affair that began when she and married Miller were both working on the 2016 campaign. At the time, Miller’s wife was also pregnant with their second daughter.

In December of that year, President-elect Trump announced that he would be appointing Miller as his communications director, but Miller backed out two days later, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Fox 10 Phoenix reported that Evan Mackenzie shared a video of the fire tornado that spawned off the fire just miles from Flagstaff. The fire tornado took place not far from where the Tunnel Fire burned just two months prior.

In the video, you can see tons of smoke blanketing the sky for miles. The video then zooms in on the dark-colored fire tornado, a terrifying sight.

After years of revelry with flashy cars, blond women and high living, the owner of the two Orlando-area Rachel's men's clubs was arrested Wednesday on charges of racketeering, conspiracy, prostitution and money laundering.

James Veigle, 56, of Winter Park is accused of turning the two strip clubs into sexual fantasy lands for big spenders.

It has been clear for months that Veigle was the principal target in a vice investigation that already has snared 34 people, most of them Veigle's former employees. His attorneys had been negotiating his surrender for weeks.

Shortly before he surrendered at the Orange County Jail, Veigle told the Orlando Sentinel that he planned to fight the charges.

"We've been shadow boxing for eight months," Veigle said. "It's a time of reckoning."

He said that he had done nothing improper. He insisted that any illegal acts at his clubs in Casselberry and south Orange County had been the work of employees.

"I was going to get a Richard Nixon mask and go, 'I am not a crook,' " he joked.

Veigle, 56, a real estate, restaurant and nightclub entrepreneur worth an estimated $10.6 million, is charged with 13 counts by the Office of Statewide Prosecution. According to the charges, customers could buy sex and drugs at the clubs if they had enough money and knew the right people.

"The bottom line was his club ran on the premise of catering to customers," said Rick Bogle, chief assistant statewide prosecutor in Orlando. Employees "gave customers what they wanted. If they wanted girls who would fondle them, touch them, have sex with them, that's what they provided. If they wanted girls to go home with them, that's what they provided."

Veigle is charged with personally taking part in five acts of prostitution. He's accused of paying one dancer to have sex with three customers: a food company executive, an auto dealer and a third man identified only by his first name.

He's also charged with arranging for two other women to perform sex acts for two other customers: a soft-drink executive and a professional athlete.

Most of the money-laundering counts relate to prostitution as well, but two are tied to cocaine sales.

Veigle is not accused of selling or using drugs. Instead, prosecutors allege that undercover agents got club managers to give them cash advances of up to $1,800 on credit cards after the managers had been told the agents wanted money to buy cocaine.

Agents then used the cash to make three drug purchases.

If convicted on all counts, Veigle could be sent to prison for more than 170 years.

"It's easy to allege something," said defense attorney Harrison "Butch" Slaughter. "They can't prove it."

Veigle surrendered at the Orange County Jail at 3:15 p.m. as part of a pre-arranged deal with the Office of Statewide Prosecution. He stepped out of a black Mercedes-Benz sedan, walked through a gaggle of reporters, was handcuffed, fingerprinted and photographed.

A little over an hour later, he was released from jail on a $1 million bond.

The high bond amount angered Veigle, but he said prosecutors had threatened to send out a SWAT team to his eight-acre lakefront estate to arrest him unless he agreed to that amount.

Most of the bond $900,000 was secured by two Seminole County warehouses put up by friend and Rachel's investor Ed Quinn. Veigle only had to pay $10,000 – 10 percent of the remainder.

Thirteen people all but one of them an employee were charged with racketeering in July. They included managers and dancers, people snared in a six-month undercover investigation at the clubs in Casselberry and south Orange County.

Virtually all of those suspects are cooperating with prosecutors.

The only suspects charged Wednesday were Veigle and the corporations that own the Rachel's in south Orange County and the Casselberry Rachel's, which was closed earlier this month.

Veigle also owns a club in West Palm Beach that has not been charged with any crimes.

Prosecutors originally insisted that Veigle not be allowed back in the Orlando area clubs while he awaited trial. That demand, however, fell during negotiations with Slaughter.

Today will be "business as usual" for Veigle, Slaughter said. His client was all smiles when he walked out of the jail.

"They're very nice in there," Veigle said.
