Ghislaine Maxwell will learn her fate Tuesday when a US judge sentences the former socialite for helping late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse girls.

 

Maxwell, 60, faces receiving an effective life term in prison when judge Alison Nathan hands down her sentence in Manhattan’s federal court.

 

The Oxford-educated daughter of the late British press baron Robert Maxwell was convicted late last year on five of six counts, the most serious for sex trafficking minors.

 

Her lawyers have argued for leniency, citing a traumatic childhood and claiming that Maxwell is being unfairly punished because Epstein escaped trial.

 

They called for Nathan to hand down a sentence less than the US probation office’s recommended 20 years.

 

Prosecutors have asked that Maxwell receive between 30 and 55 years in jail, arguing that she has shown an “utter lack of remorse” for her crimes, committed between 1994 and 2004.

 

Maxwell’s attorney Bobbi Sternheim wrote in a letter Saturday to Nathan that her client had been placed on suicide watch — despite not being suicidal — and that her lawyers would look to postpone her sentencing if she remained in solitary confinement.

 

During her high-profile trial late 2021, the prosecutors successfully proved that Maxwell was “the key” to Epstein’s scheme of enticing young girls to give him massages, during which he would sexually abuse them.

 

Two of Epstein’s victims, identified as “Jane” and “Carolyn,” testified that they were as young as 14 when Maxwell began grooming them.

 

Maxwell’s lawyers say their client had “a difficult, traumatic childhood with an overbearing, narcissistic, and demanding father.”

 

“It made her vulnerable to Epstein, whom she met right after her father’s death,” they wrote in submissions filed earlier this month.

 

Money manager Epstein killed himself in prison 2019 aged 66 while awaiting his own sex crimes trial in New York.

 

“Ms. Maxwell cannot and should not bear all the punishment for which Epstein should have been held responsible,” her attorneys pleaded.

 

‘DEVASTATING HARM’

The prosecution contended in its own court filing last week that Maxwell “was an adult who made her own choices.”

 

“She made the choice to conspire with Epstein for years, working as partners in crime and causing devastating harm to vulnerable victims,” wrote Damian Williams, the US attorney for the Southern District of New York.

 

Maxwell has already been held in detention for some two years following her arrest in New Hampshire in the summer of 2020.

 

Her sentencing will cap a dramatic fall for the former international jetsetter who grew up in wealth and privilege as a friend to royalty.

 

Her circle included Britain’s Prince Andrew, former US president and real estate baron Donald Trump and the Clinton family.

 

In February, Prince Andrew settled a sexual abuse lawsuit with Virginia Giuffre, who said she had been trafficked to the royal by Epstein and Maxwell.

 

In April, Nathan rejected a request by Maxwell for a new trial.

Dog owner charged in deadly northeast Harris County dog attack

 

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The owner of the three dogs involved in a brutal attack that killed a Huffman man faces criminal charges.

 

Matthew Leroy Satchell, 32, is charged with felony dog attack stemming from the June 9th incident on Nicolas Vasquez, 51.

Once you have downloaded the supporting documentation you can follow the steps below to view these files. The instructions below will work on any Windows based computer with the required software.

 

Once the zip file is downloaded you will need to extract the files into a temporary directory on your computer.

Open SQL Server Management Studio and connect to your machine running SQL Server

Within the Object Explorer expand the node representing your machine and right click on the "Databases" folder and choose "Attach…" from the context menu.

Click the Add button under the "Databases to attach" header and choose the MDF file you wish to add and hit OK. Please note: this process works best with the MDF and LDF files are in the same folder/directory on your machine.

At this point the database should be loaded successfully into your Object Explorer

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Forty-eight people died after being abandoned in a tractor-trailer in the sweltering Texas heat, one of the worst tragedies to claim the lives of migrants smuggled across the border from Mexico to the U.S. Sixteen people were hospitalized, including four children.

 

A city worker heard a cry for help from the truck on a lonely San Antonio back road shortly before 6 p.m. Monday and discovered the gruesome scene, Police Chief William McManus said. Hours later, body bags lay spread on the ground near the trailer and bodies remained inside as authorities responded to the calamity.

 

Forty-six people were found dead near the scene, authorities said, and two more people later died at a hospital, said Patti Tanner, a spokesperson at Baptist Health System in San Antonio.

 

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said those who died had “families who were likely trying to find a better life.”

 

“This is nothing short of a horrific human tragedy,” Nirenberg said.

 

It’s among the deadliest of the tragedies that have claimed thousands of lives in recent decades as people attempt to cross the U.S. border from Mexico. Ten migrants died in 2017 after being trapped inside a truck parked at a Walmart in San Antonio. In 2003, the bodies of 19 migrants were found in a sweltering truck southeast of San Antonio.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The American Hebrew Academy will start housing immigrant children at the boarding school campus in July, the Board of Directors announced Friday.

 

The new leasing deal will give the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Administration for Children and Families’ (ACF) Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) the campus for use as a transitional space.

 

The Unaccompanied Children program through ORR provides transitional housing for children who have come across the United border alone. The program then works to place the children with family or provide a "vetted sponsro."

 

During their time at the Greensboro site, the federal agency will provide schooling, mental and medical services, case management, legal services, and recreational opportunities.

 

Local leaders first discussed the idea with the federal government back in May of 2021, but a decision was not announced until just now.

 

"It is important to remember we are talking about a transition site for children. The facility is not a permanent home for unaccompanied minors," said Guilford County Commission Chairman Skip Alston. "ORR is legally required to provide for the care and custody of all unaccompanied children (UC) referred by DHS to ORR until they are appropriately and safely placed with a vetted sponsor. I can only imagine how emotionally and mentally difficult it must be to be a child in a new country, with a new language, to be all alone and separated from the comfort and support of the people you know who love and care about you.”

 

The school on the 100-acre campus closed in 2019. It will now be leased to the federal government for five years, during which the American Hebrew Academy will provide educational support.

 

In 2019, the school was valued at $84.5 million. It has 31 buildings, 35 resident staff apartments, an 88,000 square food $18 million dollars athletic center, and a natatorium along with a 22-acre lake.

 

"It was made perfectly for the situation," said Alston. "We are dealing with children, that's what we have to look into (…) these children didn't ask to be put in those positions unfortunately parents put them in those positions."

 

ORR currently operates approximately 200 state-licensed facilities of this kind in 22 states.

 

According to the U.S. DHHS, in fiscal year 2021, about 72% of all children referred to the program were over the age of 14. Sixty-six percent of them were boys and 47% came from Guatemala. As of February 2022, 9,981 children were in HHS care. The average length of stay for a child was 30 days.

 

Both Alston and Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan said this is a welcome announcement.

 

“This is a unique opportunity for the American Hebrew Academy to continue using its facility for the purpose of educating children and preparing them for their future. The facility will serve a great purpose while helping to place children with a family member or other vetted sponsor. It is important to know that this will not be a drain on any local public resources. These children will not be in the Guilford County School system. The facility will provide its own security. This will be a fully self-contained facility."

 

Up to 800 people will be hired to fulfill functions and provide services at the Hebrew Academy.

 

Jobs will include administrators, teachers, counselors, medical care professionals, and other workers to oversee the facility and meet the needs of unaccompanied children.

 

The academy has a particular need for Spanish-speaking workers.

 

"This will also have a significant impact on the local economy," Vaughan said. "The new positions needed to support the federal program will be hired to provide services at the facility. And this comes without any incentives from the City. Hiring is currently underway and they are in particular need for Spanish-speaking professionals."

SUPREME COURT RESTORES THE TRUE MEANING OF THE FIRST AMENDMENT AND ABANDONS LEMON TEST FOR RELIGIOUS RIGHTS CASES

 

Coach Kennedy Wins Prayer Case

 

In a landmark case, Kennedy v. Bremerton School District, Professor William Wagner and Great Lakes Justice Center represented NFL Hall of Fame athlete (two-time Superbowl Champion) Darrell Green. We filed a Supreme Court brief in support of a high school coach urging the Court to abandon the Lemon test. Coach Kennedy lost his job because he took a knee and prayed after football games. The government claimed it needed to stop the coach from praying, saying if it did not do so it would be violating the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause. In an historic decision, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the infamous legal rule that said the Establishment Clause required government actors to have a secular reason for every action, and to not even symbolically endorse a religious view. The Court returned our nation to the plain meaning of the First Amendment. Praying on a football field does not establish a religious government; when read together with the First Amendment free exercise and speech clauses, praying does not, therefore, violate the Establishment Clause. The Court specifically abandoned the Lemon Test to analyze cases under the First Amendment.

 

The Court held that the First Amendment protects “an individual engaging in a personal religious observance from government reprisal; the Constitution neither mandates nor permits the government to suppress such religious expression.” Read the complete opinion of the court here: https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/21pdf/21-418_i425.pdf.

 

In its opinion SCOTUS further ruled: “An Establishment Clause violation does not automatically follow whenever a public school or other government entity “fail[s] to censor” private religious speech. Nor does the Clause “compel the government to purge from the public sphere” anything an objective observer could reasonably infer endorses or “partakes of the religious.” … But learning how to tolerate speech or prayer of all kinds is “part of learning how to live in a pluralistic society,” a trait of character essential to “a tolerant citizenry.”

 

Constitutional Law Professor William Wagner, President of Great Lakes Justice Center, stated: “When freeing human beings atrociously held as slaves, Lincoln invoked the favor of Almighty God in the Emancipation Proclamation. Today the Supreme Court reversed a legal rule that would have held Lincoln's action, and praying, unconstitutional. In doing so, the Court returns the First Amendment to its true meaning."

 

David Kallman, Senior Legal Counsel for Great Lakes Justice Center, stated: “We are pleased that the Court accepted our argument to finally bury the Lemon Test. Today, the Court has returned to following the plain language of the Constitution. We are thrilled that Coach Kennedy has been vindicated and his religious conscience rights have been upheld.”
