BOSTON (AP) โ€” Former Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was aware of decades-old domestic violence allegations against the cityโ€™s now embattled top cop before picking him to lead the department, the police commissionerโ€™s predecessor told a court this week.

 

The statement came in a case brought by Dennis White, who is urging a court to block the city from firing him as police commissioner after placing him on leave in February. A judge heard arguments in the case on Thursday but didnโ€™t immediately issue a ruling.

 

Walsh, now secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor, denies having any knowledge of the allegations before picking White for the top job in January. Walsh said in an emailed statement this week that neither the allegations nor Whiteโ€™s internal affairs files were shared with him in 2014 when White was being considered for promotion to the police forceโ€™s command staff, or at any other time.

 

โ€œHad I known, I would not have chosen him for police commissioner or any other role,โ€ Walsh said.

Californians to get 'inflation relief' payments

 

CHICO, Calif. - State lawmakers just approved the new budget and $17 billion of it will be rebates for taxpayers, but some people think it is too little too late.

"Why is everything so expensive?โ€ said Faizal Nazaruddin who is tired of high prices.

This is the million dollar question many people are asking right now.

"I no longer buy ice creams or cereals,โ€ said Nazaruddin. โ€œMeat is definitely out of the equation."

Nazaruddin is one of many making major spending cutbacks for him and his dog, Sadie. He told Action News Now he is just buying the necessities.

"These aren't like luxuries. This is just regular life,โ€ said Nazaruddin. โ€œAll the luxuries I left behind."

 

The $17 billion โ€œinflation relief packageโ€ would give 23 million Californians a $200 or more tax rebate. The money comes out of the stateโ€™s $100 billion surplus.

Every California tax payer would receive either $350, $250 or $200 dollars based on their income level with an additional payment of the same amount if they have at least one dependent.

"We've already spent three, four, five times that amount,โ€ Nazaruddin told Action News Now.

Single filers who make less than $75,000 would get $350. If youโ€™re a single filer who makes $75,001 to $125,000 you would get $250, and single filers who make $125,001 to $250,000 would get $200.

Joint filers would get double these payments plus every dependent would add either $350, $250 or $200 all according to which income bracket they fall into.

For example, a married couple earning $100,000 per year with one child would get $1,050.

 

"It's better than nothing,โ€ said Bill Hayes who lives in Chico.

Republican Assemblyman for District 3, James Gallagher, does not think this will make a dent in inflation.

โ€œActually in some ways it might contribute to greater inflation,โ€ said Gallagher.

Gallagher believes that inflation will get worse since prices still will not go down with the tax rebate.

โ€œI think we should focus on lowering costs. We can lower the gas price by suspending all of the gas tax. The president is going to do this at the federal level, he already announced that. We can do this at the state level,โ€ said Gallagher. "If we did both the state and the federal that would be over 70 cents a gallon that everyone would save."

 

The payments from the state would show up by late October.

Election Night Livewire : Final Major Night of Primaries Before August Suggests Bigger Red Wave

Voters in several states head to the polls on Tuesday in the final major primary election night before a few big elections upcoming in August, with Republicans hoping to keep momentum growing ahead of November and Democrats clamoring to hang on to the slivers of power they still have.

 

Several big states like New York, Illinois, and Colorado will select GOP and Democrat nominees in primaries on Tuesday, while other states like Utah and Oklahoma will do the same. Mississippi will hold a runoff election for the GOP primary for the district of Rep. Michael Guest (R-MS), who was surprisingly much weaker than expected in the primaryโ€™s first round a few weeks ago with challenger Michael Cassidy earning more votes than Guest the first go-around. Establishment Republicans have gone all in for Guest and tried to turn the tide against Cassidy, so Tuesdayโ€™s results will show whether they were successful or whether Cassidy was able to harness his shocking first round performance into a formal nomination win.

 

The first primary elections since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade nearly 50 years after the Court first made the ruling will also provide evidence as to whether or not the left has newfound energy heading into this all-important midterm election season.

 

Voters in New York will select a GOP nominee for governor. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) is easily the favorite but faces several challengers, including former New York City mayor Rudy Giulianiโ€™s son Andrew Giuliani and businessman Harry Wilson. The winner of the GOP nomination for governor is likely to face incumbent Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul in November. Hochul rose to the position when her predecessor Andrew Cuomo resigned in disgrace.

 

Later in the year, several congressional primaries in both parties are worth watching here, too, as Republicans battle to succeed retiring Rep. Chris Jacobs (R-NY) upstate, and downstate Democrats have an internecine member-member primary battle between Reps. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and Carolyn Maloney (D-NY)โ€“two committee chairs forced to run against each other due to redistricting. These primary races happen later, on Aug. 23, because the redistricting process took longer this cycle so the congressional primaries were delayed.

 

In Illinois, Republicans will select nominees for both the governor and Senate racesโ€“which could become competitive in November with the current environment. Republicans have won statewide in Illinois in recent years, so that remains a possibility. But more importantly, GOP primary voters will decide a member-member primary caused by redistricting between Reps. Mary Miller (R-IL) and Rodney Davis (R-IL). Former President Donald Trump has gone all in for Miller and hosted a rally with her this weekend.

 

Colorado voters will decide several key primaries, including who the GOP nominee for U.S. Senate will be. In Utah, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) aims to hold off a primary challenger while he prepares for a general election battle with Never Trumper Evan McMullinโ€“and Democrats appear to be colluding with McMullin to influence the outcome of the election in a desperate ploy to beat Lee.

 

Oklahoma, meanwhile, has both U.S. Senate seats up this year with the looming retirement of Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK). Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) aims to hold off a primary challenger, while Rep. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) appears from public polling to be the frontrunner in the GOP primary to succeed Inhofe.

 

The polls close in Mississippi, Illinois, and Oklahoma at 8 p.m. ET, New York and Colorado at 9 p.m. ET, and in Utah at 10 p.m. ET. South Carolina also has runoffs scheduled for Tuesdayโ€“and the polls close there at 7 p.m. ETโ€“but there are no major races of national political importance there this week.

An interesting picture is coming into focus in New York: With 5 percent reporting in the GOP gubernatorial primary, Andrew Giuliani still leads but only in the counties around New York City in southern Long Island. As other counties begin to report elsewhere in the state, Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) is winning most of these but businessman Harry Wilson is also leading a few of them. Zeldin is slowly but surely cutting into Giulianiโ€™s lead with rural New Yorkersโ€“similar to the Trump coalition. Itโ€™s very interesting because Giuliani has presented himself as more aligned with Trump but it seems like the working class outside the city are going more for Zeldin. I hope so. I have this โ€œdivide and conquerโ€ suspicion lingering still. Throughout the past few years Iโ€™ve lost a lot of ability to trust people. So I donโ€™t trust Trump or anyone else. Charges against former Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, his health director and seven others in the Flint water scandal were dismissed after the state Supreme Court ruled that a judge had no power to issue indictments under a century-old, rarely used law.

 

The state laws 'authorize a judge to investigate, subpoena witnesses, and issue arrest warrants' as a one-person grand jury, the Supreme Court said said on Tuesday.

 

'But they do not authorize the judge to issue indictments,' the court said in a 6-0 opinion.

 

The challenge was filed by lawyers for former health director Nick Lyon, but the decision also applies to Snyder and others who were indicted by Genesee County Judge David Newblatt.

 

Lyon and Michigan's former chief medical executive, Dr. Eden Wells, were charged with involuntary manslaughter for nine deaths related to Legionnaires' disease when Flint's water system might have lacked enough chlorine to combat bacteria in the river water.

 

It's an astonishing defeat for Attorney General Dana Nessel, who took office in 2019 and got rid of a special prosecutor and put together a new team to investigate whether crimes were committed when lead contaminated Flint's water system in 2014 to 2015.

For the past 3 million years, Comet C/2017 K2 (PanSTARRS) has been falling toward the sunโ€“a long, slow journey from the Oort cloud. Finally, it's here. Austrian astrophotographer Michael Jaeger photographed "Comet K2" entering the inner solar system on June 25th:

 

Comet K2 caused a sensation when it was discovered in 2017. At first, it appeared to be one of the biggest comets in modern history, with a nucleus as much as 160 km wide. Hubble Space Telescope observations have since downsized it to 18 km. That's still big (typical comet nuclei measure 1 to 3 km), but not a record setter. K2 is comparable in size to Halley's Comet.

 

The comet will make its closest approach to Earth (1.8 AU away) on July 14th, brightening to 7th or 8th magnitude. This is too dim to see with the naked eye, but an easy target for backyard telescopes. A good time to look is now before the full Moon of July 13th interferes. Comet K2 may be found high in the midnight sky in the constellation Ophiuchus.
