California gun owners' personal information exposed in data breach

 

That information includes people's names, ages, addresses and license types.

 

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) – If you have a concealed carry weapon (CCW) permit in California, your personal information may have been exposed to hackers.

 

A new website launched by California Attorney General Rob Bonta's office meant to increase firearms transparency launched by sharing too much information.

 

Names, addresses, birthdates, occupations, and more personal information was linked to the website, according to the Fresno County Sheriff's Office.

 

This means the information of any Californian who has a concealed carry weapon permit might have been compromised for hours from Monday night through Tuesday morning, when the website was disabled.

 

But Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims says some people's information was already republished on social media.

 

The Attorney General's office shared this statement with Action News:

 

"We are investigating an exposure of individuals' personal information connected to the DOJ Firearms Dashboard.

 

Any unauthorized release of personal information is unacceptable.

 

We are working swiftly to address this situation and will provide additional information as soon as possible."

So, we’ve been instructed to build a MAP forever, and we haven’t. Clockfags are doing the Lord’s work but everything is supposed to connect. So, I was trying to think of a structure that would work this way. A pyramid seemed like a decent idea. Fits thematically as well.

Data breach exposes private info of all California concealed-carry permit holders

A data breach has exposed the personal information of every person with a California permit to carry a concealed weapon, authorities said Tuesday.

 

The California Department of Justice suffered the breach as part of the launch of its 2022 Firearms Dashboard Portal, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, which said it was informed of the leak Tuesday by the California State Sheriffs’ Assn.

 

“This public site allows access to certain information, however, personal information of concealed carry weapon permit holders is not supposed to be visible,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “This includes, but is not limited to a person’s name, age, address, Criminal Identification Index number and license type (Standard, Judicial, Reserve and Custodial).”

 

The breach affects all concealed weapons permit holders in California, the Sheriff’s Office said.

 

Justice Department officials pulled down the dashboard site along with all related links after learning of the breach, but it is possible that some private information was posted elsewhere online.

 

“It is unknown exactly how much time the information was accessible,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

 

California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta’s office told law enforcement it is “working with urgency” to determine the breach’s scope and plans to contact permit holders to directly advise them.

 

Bonta’s office will institute a program to mitigate harm or damages that permit holders suffer as a result of the breach, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

 

“We are investigating an exposure of individuals’ personal information connected to the DOJ Firearms Dashboard,” the attorney general’s office said in a statement. “Any unauthorized release of personal information is unacceptable. We are working swiftly to address this situation and will provide additional information as soon as possible.”

 

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone whose information was compromised by the breach to visit www.fresnosheriff.org/report-a-crime-online and submit a report.

 

Further information was not available Tuesday night.

Three U.S. tourists found dead at a Sandals resort in the Bahamas in May were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, police said Tuesday.

 

In a statement, the Royal Bahamas Police Force said the three victims, identified as Michael Phillips, 68, and Robbie Phillips, 65, from Tennessee; and Vincent Chiarella, 64, from Florida, had died as a result of asphyxiation due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

 

They said an investigation into the deadly incident was still underway.

 

The three Americans were found dead at the Sandals Emerald Bay Resort in Great Exuma on May 6.

 

Chiarella’s wife, Donnis, 65, was airlifted to a hospital in Florida in serious condition. The hospital, HCA Florida Kendall in Miami, later said her health had been upgraded to “fair condition,” NBC Miami reported. Her current condition was not immediately known.

 

Police previously said an initial investigation had found that one of the couples had complained of illness the night before they were found. They had visited a medical facility, received treatment and then returned to the villa, police said.

 

It was not clear if the villas had been equipped with carbon monoxide detectors or if they had, whether they were working. A spokesperson for Sandals did not directly respond to a question from NBC News on whether the villas had been equipped with carbon monoxide detectors at the time.

 

In a statement, the spokesperson said Sandals has "fully supported the investigation into this event to ensure we are doing everything possible to learn from it."

 

"Bahamian authorities have concluded the cause was an isolated incident in one standalone structure that housed two individual guest rooms," they said.

 

The spokesperson repeated past comments from the company saying carbon monoxide detectors have since been placed in all guest rooms at Sandals Emerald Bay and will be installed in all guest rooms across the company's portfolio.

 

The deaths have cast a cloud over the resort hotel since the incident unfolded. The location is billed as an “adults-only” enclave with 11 restaurants and a golf course overlooking a secluded stretch of beach.

Russell Moore Can't Praise Dobbs Because Pro-Trump Christians Won

Many Christian figureheads of the Never Trump variety have either gone mute or twisted themselves in ideological knots since the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade after nearly half a century, but none of the silence is as deafening as that coming from Russell Moore, the former provost and dean of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

 

It’s odd that one of the most prominent names in evangelicalism and the country’s largest Protestant circles hasn’t said a peep about the most consequential legal decision of our time, especially since Christianity was such a large part of the movement causing the reversal of Roe and will no doubt play an outsized role in its aftermath.

 

A little online searching shows one “bonus episode” from “The Russell Moore Show” on Christianity Today (where Moore holds the title of public theologian) that came out the day of the Dobbs ruling, advertising “A Conversation with Stephen Prothero on Culture Wars Now That ‘Roe’ Is Gone.”

 

But the episode didn’t occur after Roe was “gone”; it was a pre-tape from after the Dobbs draft opinion leak speculating about what might come next, meaning Moore has offered no post-Roe analysis. And his guest, a religion professor at Boston University, has spent the days since the Roe reversal telling Christians to “f-ck off” on Twitter and retweeting political graphics depicting conservative Supreme Court justices as Tiananmen Square tanks about to mow down a pregnant woman. Christianity Today didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment about why the pre-taped podcast was dishonestly framed as post-Dobbs commentary.

 

I don’t think every person everywhere is responsible for commenting on cultural, political, and spiritual events. In fact, that performative impulse is one of the reasons once-apolitical cultural havens such as professional sports have been so ruined by virtue-signaling and complicated sociopolitical realities have been dumbed down to a pointless black square on Instagram. But given thatMoore is the chairman of public theology at Christianity Today, why has he not said anything publicly about this issue of deep theological importance?

 

It’s not as though Moore hasn’t made his opinions on abortion and Roe clear in the past. He’s many times written about the barbaric practice, even editing a book about “The Gospel & Abortion,” and has often alluded to Roe’s egregiousness on Twitter. Russell Moore Can't Praise Dobbs Because Pro-Trump Christians Won

Moore has in the past publicly swiped at fellow believers under the guise of condemning “Christian nationalism.” He never missed the chance to comment on the Syrian refugee crisis or white supremacy or the Confederate flag — or any number of different highly politicized issues. Especially in the last few years, Moore has prioritized political commentary if it meant the chance to beat the Christians to the right of himself as not loving their neighbor the right way — or at least not loving them by supporting the policy or the politician he preferred.

 

As Jackon Waters and Emma Posey astutely noted in The American Conservative last year: “The direction Moore, [David] French, and [Beth] Moore are walking is not simply traditional evangelicalism, but a form of cultural accommodation dressed as convictional religion. The result is a religious respectability that promotes national unity, liberalism, and wokeism under the rhetorical guise of love for neighbor. While [Russell] Moore and his guest try to straddle the fence, there is little doubt that their biggest support is now coming from those significantly to their left politically.”

 

This “cultural accommodation dressed as convictional religion” didn’t emerge out of thin air, and it doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It’s a direct result of a Never Trump posture that’s been too arrogant to acknowledge the spiritual faithfulness of anyone who doesn’t share its conclusions that the 45th president is indefensible.

 

Furthermore, it’s the primary reason Moore apparently can’t bring himself to celebrate a hard-fought Supreme Court victory that could result in tens of millions of lives saved over the next few decades: As much as the Dobbs ruling is a victory for the church and the pro-life movement, the striking down of Roe v. Wade is a victory of the Trump presidency, without which the egregious precedent would not be overturned today.

 

We know. Trump is a moral stain. Sexual promiscuity. Insurrection. Yada yada yada. But after 63 million lives lost and half a century of blood, sweat, and tears culminating in an answered prayer for something we barely had the faith to ask for, does the chairman of public theology really have nothing to say?

On May 15 the Supreme Court unanimously held in S.D. Warren Co. v.

Maine Board of Environmental Protection that the mere flow of water

through an existing dam constitutes a “discharge” regulated by the Clean

Water Act. In so holding, the Court affirmed a state’s authority to require

federally licensed hydroelectric projects to comply with state water-quality

standards. This decision, arising in the context of federal and state power in the area of licensing

infrastructure projects, is thefirst environmental decision of the Roberts Court.

Section 401 of the Clean Water Act requires “[a]ny Applicant for a federal license or permit to

conduct any activity . . . which may result in a discharge into navigable water[s]” to obtain a

certification from the state in which the discharge originates. The statute further requires that

any effluent limitations and other requirements set forth in the certification become conditions

on the federal license or permit. The Federal Power Act, in turn, grants the Federal Energy

Regulatory Commission (FERC) exclusive authority to license hydroelectric projects on

navigable waters of the United States.
