An army of more than 200 MAGA candidates ready to fight for Donald Trump's agenda is marching into November's midterm races, after a heated primary season that proved the ex-president remains, for the most part, the de facto leader of the Republican Party.

 

Trump has played a heavy hand in the 2022 election cycle thus far, endorsing candidates both for Congress and state executive roles in races that normally do not get the national attention he's brought to them.

 

He's also jetted around the country to campaign with their voters in his signature 'Make America Great Again' rallies, including a forthcoming appearance in Ohio on Saturday for Senate candidate JD Vance.

 

It's appeared to have worked for him - with a success rate of more than 90 percent.

 

Overall in the Senate races, Trump's favored candidates won 100 percent of the time out of primaries that have already occurred. He's helped 18 candidates advance to November, with two races that are still pending.

 

But some of the candidates he's backed - like Herschel Walker in Georgia and Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania - appear to have establishment Republicans worried about their electability in a general race where independent voters play a key role.

 

Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell expressed reservations about how certain candidates would fare in the upcoming state-wide races during an event at the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce last month.

 

'I think there's probably a greater likelihood the House flips than the Senate,' McConnell said. 'Senate races are just different, they're statewide. Candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome.'

 

On the House side, Trump has faced far less opposition to his candidate choices.

 

The former president's candidates have won all but five of their races in regular primaries, out of 158 total endorsements. That includes three races that are still pending.

Joker (playing card)

 

The Joker is a playing card found in most modern French-suited card decks, as an addition to the standard four suits (Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts, and Spades). From the second half of the 20th century, they have also been found in Spanish- and Italian-suited decks, excluding stripped decks. The Joker originated in the United States during the Civil War, and was created as a trump card for the game of Euchre. It has since been adopted into many other card games, where it often acts as a wild card, but may have other functions such as the top trump, a skip card (forcing another player to miss a turn), the lowest-ranking card, the highest-value card or a card of a different value from the rest of the pack (see e.g. Zwickern which has 6 Jokers with this function). By contrast, a wild card is any card that may be used to represent another card or cards; it need not be a Joker.

 

Origin

The game of Euchre is credited with the introduction of the Joker into card games. However, Euchre began life with no Joker. In the earliest rules of 1844, 32 standard cards are used and the Right Bower, the trump Jack, was the "commanding card" with the Left Bower, the Jack of the same colour, as the second-highest card.[1] The Joker makes its first official appearance in a set of rules in 1868 where it turns out to be a blank specimen card not intended for actual play. This gave rise to a variant game called "Euchre with the Joker" in which the blank card ranked above all the rest.[2] It must have been in use even earlier, however, since the term "Best Bower" appears in a satirical 1861 piece about the American Civil War,[3] and in fact Samuel Hart is credited with printing the first illustrated "Best Bower" card in 1863 with his "Imperial Bower".[4][5] Best Bower-type Jokers continued to be produced well into the 20th century. Cards labelled "Joker" began appearing around the late 1860s, with some depicting clowns and jesters.

 

The idea behind the three top cards in Euchre appears to have originated from Germany where the games Juckerspiel and Bester Bube ("Best Bower") also used Jacks as best, right and left bowers. It is also believed that the term "Joker" comes from Juckerspiel, which is also known as Jucker, the original German spelling of Euchre.[6][7] One British manufacturer, Charles Goodall, was manufacturing packs with Jokers for the American market in 1871.[8] The first Joker for the domestic British market was sold in 1874.[9] Italians call Jokers "Jolly", for many early cards were labelled "Jolly Joker".[10]

 

The notion of a Joker was later transferred to the game of Poker where it was initially called the Mistigris.[11] This happened around 1875, where it functioned as a wild card.[12] Packs with two Jokers started to become the norm during the late 1940s for the game of Canasta.[13][14][15] Since the 1950s, German and Austrian packs have included three Jokers to play German Rummy. In Poland, the third Joker is known as the blue Joker because the KZWP monopoly during the Polish People's Republic printed all third Jokers blue. In Schleswig-Holstein, Zwickern packs come with six Jokers.[16]

 

Appearance

Jokers do not have any standardized appearance across the card manufacturing industry. Each company produces their own depictions of the card. The publishers of playing cards trademark their Jokers, which have unique artwork that often reflect contemporary culture.[17] Out of convention, Jokers tend to be illustrated as jesters. There are usually two Jokers per deck, often noticeably different. For instance, the United States Playing Card Company (USPCC) prints their company's guarantee claim on only one. At times, the Jokers will each be colored to match the colors used for suits; e.g., there will be a red Joker and a black Joker. In games where the Jokers may need to be compared, the red, full-color, or larger-graphic Joker usually outranks the black, monochrome, or smaller-graphic one. If the Joker colors are similar, the Joker without a guarantee will outrank the guaranteed one. With the red and black Jokers, the red one can alternately be counted as a Heart/Diamond and the black one can alternately be counted as a Club/Spade. The Unicode for playing cards provide symbols for three Jokers: red, black, and white.

 

Many decks do not provide the Joker with a corner index symbol; of those that do, the most common is a solid star (as is the case with Bee cards). It is also common for decks to simply display the word "JOKER" in the corner. Bicycle cards use a "US" monogram as the Joker index.

Federal employees could receive thousands of dollars in refunds for student loans payments that they never made under the White House’s new student loan forgiveness program.

 

Jason Delisle, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute who previously worked for the U.S. Senate Committee on the Budget, said in a series of tweets that some federal employees could see a significant “bonus windfall” as a result of a technicality in President Joe Biden’s new student loan forgiveness program. If an employee had previously taken advantage of a federal relief program, where the agency they worked for paid up to $10,000 per year of student loan debt, refunds offered by the Department of Education (DOE) on payments made during the pandemic would go directly to the employee, as opposed to the agency that actually made the payment, Delisle alleges. (RELATED: Democrats Pushing College Loan Forgiveness Owe Massive Sums In Student Debt, Records Show)

 

The DOE’s website discussing qualification and conditions on the new student loan program states that any voluntary payments made during the pandemic on a loan that would have otherwise been forgiven will “automatically” be refunded, “even if someone else made a payment on your loan.” To qualify, borrowers must have an outstanding balance on their student loan payment.

 

The DOE website gives an example where a borrower, eligible for $10,000 in relief, paid $1,000 on a $10,500 balance during the pandemic. This borrower would see the remaining $9,500 discharged and receive a $500 refund.

 

Delisle directly references an Office of Personnel Management (OPM) report on the Federal Student Loan Repayment Program, and notes that per the program, federal employees had up to $10,000 per year in student loans repaid for them by the federal government agency that employed them. In 2018, 10,412 federal employees received a combined $78.7 million in federal relief, according to the OPM…

Top FBI Official In Russiagate Probe Under Scrutiny For Alleged Russian Ties: REPORT

Federal prosecutors started scrutinizing a former FBI field office counterintelligence chief for ties with Russia and other foreign governments after his involvement in the probe of the 2016 Trump campaign’s Russian contacts, according to Insider.

 

A grand jury assembled in late 2021 began probingCharles McGonigal, and authorities seemingly investigated his business dealings with an aide to Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska, based on court documents the outlet obtained. Washington insiders have been known to seek private benefit through public service ties, but an FBI official becoming part of a grand-jury investigation is highly unusual, according to Insider.

 

Deripaska did business with Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort, according to CNBC. Investigators were given 2016 emails suggesting Manafort allegedly attempted to clear significant debt to Deripaska with his campaign position, offering “private meetings” about the campaign’s progress.

 

“If McGonigal is mixed up in any way shape or form with Deripaska, that strikes me as unseemly, to put it politely,” Tim Weiner, author of “Enemies: A History of The FBI,” told Insider.

 

FBI headquarters’ cybercrimes section leader, McGonigal heard early on in 2016 about a Trump campaign official saying the Russians had negative Hillary Clinton-related information, which led to the Operation Crossfire Hurricane investigation, according to Insider. He was announced as the next leader of the New York FBI field office’s counterintelligence division that October.

 

A November subpoena asked for records related to McGonigal and the Spectrum Risk Solutions consulting firm, Insider reported.

 

Purported former Soviet foreign ministry official Sergey Shestakov claimed to have earned over $30,000 for referring Deripaska’s aide to Spectrum Risk Solutions and New York law firm Kobre & Kim, which he said McGonigal helped facilitate, according to a different late-2021 court filing the outlet cited. The law firm specializes in representing clients probed on “fraud and misconduct” suspicion.

 

People can be imprisoned and fined for not disclosing lobbying, public relations and other actions under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, according to Insider.

 

The outlet said it was not clear whether the grand jury’s investigation is primarily focused on McGonigal, and the Justice Department did not tell the outlet whether it was still active. He retired in 2018.

 

“The FBI has no comment,” its national press office told the Daily Caller News Foundation. McGonigal did not return the DCNF’s request for comment.

Charles McGonigal Named Special Agent in Charge of the Counterintelligence Division for the New York Field Office

 

FBI Director James B. Comey has named Charles McGonigal as the special agent in charge of the Counterintelligence Division for the New York Field Office. Mr. McGonigal most recently served as the section chief of the Cyber-Counterintelligence Coordination Section at FBI Headquarters.

 

Mr. McGonigal entered on duty with the FBI in 1996. He was first assigned to the New York Field Office, wherehe worked Russian foreign counterintelligence and organized crime matters. During his tenure in New York, Mr. McGonigal worked on the TWA Flight 800 investigation, was assigned to the task force investigating Wen Ho Lee, investigated the 1998 terrorist bombings of the U.S. Embassies in Tanzania and Kenya, and investigated the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

 

Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Mr. McGonigal was assigned to an investigative response squad, which focused on pending international terrorist threats in the New York City area.

 

Mr. McGonigal was assigned to the Cleveland Division where he investigated white-collar and violent crime matters. In 2002, Mr. McGonigal was promoted to a supervisory special agent in the Counter-Espionage Section at FBI Headquarters, where he handled several high-profile espionage investigations. What is a "deep dream"?

"Deep dream" images are made by artificial neural networks (a kind of computer program) that seek out and enhance patterns that they "see" in images.

 

Google uses artificial neural networks to find and sort images on the web. For example, whenever someone searches "sheep," they will get pictures of sheep, not goats or bushes or corgis or anything else, because of these networks.

 

Google also uses the surrounding text on a webpage to sort images, but that's not enough. For example, a page on sheep herding might feature pictures of sheep in a field, a border collie, a shepherd, and a picture of the author of the post. Artificial neural networks allow Google to discriminate between a picture of an eggplant and a picture of a human face.

 

How does the network know what a sheep looks like? Basically, the network is fed thousands of images of sheep and then looks for commonalities between the images. Each layer of the neural network looks for different things; the shallower layers look for patterns of light and shadow, while deeper layers look for shapes and more complex visual structures.

 

A few engineers at Google discovered that these artificial neural networks could not only recognize images, they could also generate them. If Google gave these networks an image of random noise, and then told the network to look for and amplify the sheep-like patterns in the image, these engineers could see what the network had identified as the defining visual characteristics of sheep. This process would allow the engineers to understand how the neural networks were processing images, and what each layer was "seeing."

 

The resulting pictures, called "deep dreams" by Google, looked a lot like the visual hallucinations of people on psychedelic drugs. Is that a coincidence, or are artificial neural networks giving us insight into how vision is processed in the human brain? It's too early to say, but computer and cognitive science can now "see what the machine sees." Where it goes from there is beyond my paygrade, but it's always interesting to see what happens next in this field.

How can I make deep dream images?

There are many different computer programs, mobile apps and websites that can generate deep dream images. Here's a list of the ones I've used.

 

Deep Dreamer - a computer program (Mac) that can make deepdream photos and videos. I used Deep Dreamer to make all the images in this post. It costs $14.99 but it's worth it if you're going to do a lot of intensive deep dream projects (e.g. music video sequences, art projects) and you don't have a lot of programming experience.

Dreamception - this is a mobile app that lets you create ten free deep dream images per day. It's available for iPhone and Android, but I've only used it on my Android phone. I haven't used it that much, but some people might dislike the "freemium" aspect of the app (you have to pay for certain features, e.g. unlimited image creation).

Deep Dream Generator - a fast and free web-based deep-dream creator, your photo is ready in about 20 seconds. You can't customize or mess with the parameters though, and you only get one image.

Dream Deeply - another free web-based deep dream creator. This deep dreamer has a queue so it can take a couple of hours for them to get to your image, depending on how many people are in the queue.

Deepdreamer.io - similar to Dream Deeply, but their queues are generally shorter; I've only had to wait about twenty minutes to get the finished images.

Who is Raymond Dearie, the Special Master Reviewing the Mar-a-Lago Documents?

On Thursday night, Judge Raymond J. Dearie of the Federal District Court in Brooklyn was appointed the special master to evaluate the over 11,000 documents seized by federal officials during an August search of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence and determine if any should be kept from criminal investigators due to privilege.

 

In her Sept. 15 ruling appointing Dearie, Cannon reaffirmed that the special master’s search will include classified documents, but directed Dearie to prioritize those documents “as a matter of timing.” She also reaffirmed that the FBI cannot access those classified materials until Dearie’s work is complete.

 

Dearie will now be tasked with reviewing the thousands of documents taken by the FBI during the unprecedented search of the former President’s home to make recommendations on whether any should be shielded from federal officials due to attorney-client or executive privilege. Trump’s team and DOJ have also sparred over Dearie’s timeline. DOJ has requested the review to end by Oct. 17, while Trump’s team has proposed mid-December, after the midterm elections.

 

Cannon said Thursday that Dearie will need to complete his review of materials by November 30—a timeline more similar to what Trump’s legal counsel had suggested. But she also stated that Dearie will need to propose his own timeline, and said the November deadline could shift subject to his proposals. Cannon also said that Dearie must submit interim reports and recommendations throughout his work, meaning he could make recommendations on key documents before his entire review is complete.

 

In 2012, Dearie was appointed by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts to serve a seven-year term on the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, also known as the FISA court. The 11 body court—which the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act established in 1978—reviews requests for warrants by the U.S. government to conduct electronic surveillance, physical searches, or other investigative actions related to foreign intelligence.

 

In 2017, Dearie was among the FISA court judges who approved the FBI and Justice Department’s request to surveil then-Trump campaign foreign policy advisor Carter Page as part of its inquiry into potential Russian interference in the 2016 election. Two of four of those warrants were later declared invalid after a 2019 review by the Inspector General found errors and omissions in the applications to surveil Page.

A watchdog group is filing a complaint asking the Senate Ethics Committee to investigate why Pennsylvania Democrat John Fetterman did not disclose eight real estate assets on his most recent personal financial disclosure.

 

The total value of the properties he left off his disclosure form was $108,800. All eight of the properties were in Braddock, Pa.- Fetterman's hometown where he served as mayor. Prisoner Harvey Weinstein’s rotten molars have become a dental “emergency” which he’s asking to get fixed by a private dentist — because prison medics will just pull them out and leave gaping holes in his mouth.

“This situation is an emergency,” the former film producer pleaded with a judge after being wheeled into a Los Angeles courtroom Wednesday. “I will pay for the dentist … it will be one trip and one trip only.”

LA Superior Court Judge Lisa Lench noted Weinstein had visited the medical bay at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility — where he’s locked up pending an Oct. 10 trial on charges he sexually assaulted five women between 2004 and 2013 — twice, but has not resolved his issues.

Weinstein’s lawyer Mark Werksman said jail dentists offered him two choices: pull the teeth without replacement or leave them to continue decaying.

The 70-year-old — already serving 23 years after being convicted of sex charges in New York — argued he should be allowed a bridge or fake teeth to fill gaps where three are missing to look “presentable” at trial.

“I’m in pain every day. I have cavities and I can’t eat because I’m missing teeth,” the former movie producer said.

Werksman claimed barring Weinstein from dental care would be a violation of his constitutional rights, and said a gaping hole in the front of his teeth makes him look “ridiculous” and “like a caricature.”

Lench told Weinstein even though he can pay to transport himself to and from a private dentist, it still would involve manpower from the sheriff’s department, making the request beyond the norm. Lench didn’t agree Weinstein looked ridiculous but told Werksman to write a request for the dental work for her to review.

The original purpose of the hearing was for prosecutors to ask for two witnesses who live in Italy to testify by video rather than in person during the trial.

The judge ordered one of the witnesses — Lubov Smirnova, who worked for one of Weinstein’s accusers and her family — to appear in person. The second witness, Pascal Vicedomini, will be permitted to appear by video for medical reasons.

Lench previously denied Weinstein’s bid to postpone his trial because of the Nov. 18 release of film “She Said” about how the sexual assault allegations against him were exposed, which he argued could prejudice a jury.

Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison in March 2020 after a Manhattan jury found him guilty of forcibly performing oral sex on former “Project Runway” production assistant Miriam “Mimi” Haleyi in 2006.

Weinstein was also convicted of sexually assaulting hairstylist Jessica Mann in 2013.

He was acquitted on two charges of predatory sexual assault related to allegations he raped actress Annabella Sciorra in the mid-1990s.

Last month, New York’s highest court agreed to hear Weinstein’s appeal of his conviction, in which he plans to argue he received an unfair trial.

The FBI analyst who wrongly labeled Hunter Biden evidence as "disinformation" was referred for disciplinary action just months before doing so, whistleblowers claim.

 

Brian Auten, a supervisory intelligence analyst within the bureau, was referred to the Office of Professional Responsibility following Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s December 2019 report on the Trump-Russia investigation and its use of FISA surveillance against Trump campaign associate Carter Page. Shortly after the referral, Auten was involved with the bureau’s inquiry into the son of now-President Joe Biden, with his Aug. 2020 analysis being used in part to justify the decision to "shut down investigative activity."
