Because the Gum Nebula is the closest supernova remnant, it is actually hard to see. Spanning 40 degrees across the sky, the nebula appears so large and faint that it is easily lost in the din of a bright and complex background. The Gum Nebula is highlighted nicely in red emission toward the right of the featured wide-angle, single-image photograph taken in late May. Also visible in the frame are the Atacama Desert in Chile in the foreground, the Carina Nebula in the plane of our Milky Way galaxy running diagonally down from the upper left, and the neighboring Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) galaxy. The Gum Nebula is so close that we are much nearer the front edge than the back edge, each measuring 450 and 1500 light years respectively. The complicated nebula lies in the direction of the constellations of Puppis and Vela. Oddly, much remains unknown about the Gum Nebula, including the timing and even number of supernova explosions that formed it.

"Still working on our own analysis, but here is some good initial data that points to this being an intentional attack to throw up informational chaff and reduce external visibility into protests in China (Twitter being blocked for most PRC citizens)," Alex Stamos., director of the Stanford Internet Observatory, retweeted.

Stanford University’s Mengyu Dong also shared images of Chinese escort ads, possibly made in an effort to make it difficult to access information about the mass demonstrations.

"Some of these acts have been dormant for years, only to become active … after protests broke out in China," she wrote.

She noted that one account joined Twitter in 2015 but that all of its more than 2,000 tweets have come within the past 15 hours. Another joined in March and had only sent four tweets before Nov. 26. By the next day, it had more than 3,000 posts.

Former U.S. diplomat David Cowhig also questioned the timing of the sexually-explicit accounts.

China’s top security body on Tuesday called for a “crackdown” on'' “hostile forces” ''after the country saw protests in major cities opposing Covid lockdowns and demanding greater political freedoms.

The ruling Communist Party’s Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission, which oversees all domestic law enforcement in China, said it was “necessary to crack down on infiltration and sabotage activities by hostile forces in accordance with the law,” according to a readout of a meeting carried in state news agency Xinhua.

It also said it was crucial to “resolutely crack down on illegal criminal acts that disrupt social order in accordance with the law, and earnestly safeguard overall social stability.”

China saw a weekend of protests not seen in decades as anger over unrelenting lockdowns fuelled deep-rooted frustration with its political system.

A deadly fire last week in Urumqi, the capital of the northwestern region of Xinjiang, was the catalyst for the outrage, with protesters taking to the streets in cities across China to pay tribute to the dead and call for an end to hardline Covid controls.

Some of the protesters have also used the rallies to call for greater freedom of expression and the resignation of Chinese leader Xi Jinping — bold demands in a country where all organised political opposition is systematically crushed.

Security forces have already moved to quash repeat demonstrations since the weekend, with police out in force across China on Tuesday.
