Emails show Wuhan lab collaborator played central role in public messaging about COVID-19 origins

EcoHealth Alliance President Peter Daszak, who worked closely with the Wuhan Institute of Virology, helped steer the media and scientific community away from questions about whether COVID-19 could have originated in a lab, emails released under the North Carolina Public Records Act show.

 

Emails between Daszak and University of North Carolina virologist Ralph Baric, another collaborator of the laboratory at the pandemic’s epicenter, offer new behind-the-scenes insights into Daszak’s influence. Baric’s experiments with the Wuhan lab included gain-of-function experiments to make viruses more transmissible or virulent.

 

The White House was dissuaded from investigating the possibility of a lab origin of COVID-19 in part by discussions that included both Daszak and Baric, according to a March 2020 email written by Daszak.

 

And in a separate May 2020 email, Daszak told Baric that he used talking points intended to discourage reporters from asking questions about potential gain-of-function work on coronaviruses.

 

Daszak has been a vocal proponent of a natural origin of COVID-19. EcoHealth Alliance has worked closely with the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and received millions in government funding to discover and study animal viruses.

 

Though the public does not have a complete picture of the pre-pandemic work underway, none of the viruses published by EHA or the WIV could have directly sparked the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

These new revelations add to the evidence of Daszak’s central role in shaping public perceptions about COVID-19’s origins. He secretly organized a statement in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet deeming a lab origin a β€œconspiracy theory.” He served as the U.S. representative on the 2021 World Health Organization origins investigation in China, which dismissed a lab origin as β€œextremely unlikely.” He also formerly chaired a Lancet Commission probe into the origins of COVID-19 which was disbanded after Daszak declined to share his grant reports.

 

No lab release hypotheses β€˜anytime soon’

Daszak told Baric in March 2020 that a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) discussion they participated in helped sway the Trump White House away from examining a possible lab origin of COVID-19.

Daszak and Baric both participated in the task force convened by the National Academies to inform the White House’s science office about information required to determine the origin of the pandemic.

 

In a February 3 call, the experts discussed the possibility of a lab origin of COVID-19 dismissively, other emails obtained under FOIA show.

 

National security staff were on the call, Daszak told Baric. This suggests that biothreat experts guiding the government’s response heard the scientists’ message.

 

The resulting letter to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy in 2020 assumed a natural origin. The possibility of a lab-related incident was not mentioned.

 

Both Daszak and Baric were consulted as experts for the letter.

 

Daszak seemed to think that this letter he influenced – together with a letter in the journal Nature Medicine beset by conflicts-of-interest – were strong enough to sway White House opinion and prevent NASEM committees from delving into possible lab origins.

 

β€œI don’t think this committee will be getting into the lab release or bioengineering hypothesis again any time soon β€” White House seems to be satisfied with the earlier meeting, paper in Nature and general comments within [the] scientific community,” Daszak told Baric.

 

After more evidence in favor of a lab origin emerged, including Daszak and Baric’s undisclosed conflicts of interest, the National Academies issued a new statement in 2021 acknowledging that the origin of the pandemic is unknown, and that a lab-related incident is a possibility.

 

β€˜I practice lines like that’

In the May 2020 email, Daszak coaches Baric on how to deflect a reporter’s questions on COVID-19’s origins and gain-of-function research.

β€œThey [reporters] will eventually move on to that topic. I will from now on make everything extremely clear to reporters about the way this all happens,” he said.

 

He first recommends saying that gain-of-function research issues have already been resolved by the NIH.

 

β€œThat’s already been debated extensively and decided on by NIH,” Daszak suggests telling reporters.

 

(NIH hosted a debate among scientists about the limits of gain-of-function research in the years before the pandemic. New oversight mechanisms were developed in 2017, but many scientists believe these remain too weak and opaque.)

 

Daszak then recommends citing the 2020 National Academies letter and the Nature Medicine article.

 

These efforts β€œclearly show the virus has a natural origin, no evidence of manipulation,” Daszak claimed.

 

However, neither source proved a natural origin for the pandemic.

 

Though the National Academies letter did not mention the possibility of a lab leak, discussions that led to the letter mentioned that a novel feature of the SARS-CoV-2 genome called the furin cleavage site could have arisen in a lab.

 

An early draft of the letter also mentioned the possibility of a lab origin, but the final draft did not.

 

The Nature Medicine paper, titled β€œThe proximal origin of SARS-CoV-2,” was a correspondence rather than a scientific journal article presenting novel experimental results. Though it had an enormous impact, the paper was fraught with undisclosed conflicts of interest.

 

Keeping discussions β€˜comfortable’

Daszak’s emails to Baric renew conflict-of-interest concerns about Daszak since he didn’t disclose to reporters the role he may have played in the National Academy proceedings he claimed proved a natural origin.

 

Elected as a member to the National Academies in 2018, Daszak was involved in many early discussions that may have influenced the research agenda of the COVID-19 task force advising the federal government.

 

Daszak also served on this National Academies task force and chaired a separate forum on microbial threats.

Following his nomination to the standing committee, Daszak offered to recuse himself from discussions concerning the origins of Covid-19.

 

β€œI got some questions from NAM (National Academies of Medicine) about my relationship to the Wuhan lab, but I explained that it’s purely academic (no funds from China to me), and I offered to recuse myself from any discussions about the conspiracy theories re. lab release or bioengineering,” wrote Daszak to Baric on March 17, 2020.

 

However, the extent of his recusal is unclear.

 

Documents written in April 2020 show Daszak on two NAM working groups, one whose goal was to examine β€œviral genetics, origin, and evolution of SARS-CoV-2.”

 

Notes in the document suggest their research focused on analyzing how the SARS-CoV-2 genome changed over time and in different countries. This information was needed for the β€œdevelopment of diagnostics and therapeutics” rather than determining how the pandemic began.

 

Yet in October 2020, Daszak appears to steer National Academy discussions with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) toward β€œnatural history” hypotheses for the comfort of their Chinese colleagues.

 

β€œWe discussed ways we could frame a future topic that would allow us to talk about some important issues around the β€˜natural history’ of SARS-CoV-2, that might also be comfortable for our Chinese colleagues,” wrote Daszak.

 

Benjamin Rusek, a senior program officer at the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), appears to adopt or agree with Daszak’s suggestion.

 

β€œMore discussion on the origin or β€œnatural history” of the virus focused on preventing future outbreaks (since George Gao seems to be open to it) might be possible as well,” wrote Rusek about potential NAS-CAS dialogues.

Many think the now-famous mRNA vaccines came into existence in the blink of an eye, at warp speed, in the throes of a deadly pandemic. But for Drew Weissman, who, along with his research partner Katalin KarikΓ³, is credited with developing the platform that made the life-saving mRNA vaccines possible, RNA technology was a long time coming.

 

Weissman, 63, grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts, before attending Brandeis University, and then receiving both a doctorate and a medical degree from Boston University. He eventually landed a fellowship in Dr. Anthony Fauci’s lab at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, where he spent the better part of the ’90s researching dendritic cells, a key biological player in starting the body’s immune response. So, when he found himself at the University of Pennsylvania in 1997, the question of how to bolster the human immune system was already burning in his mind.

 

Then, serendipity stepped in. Weissman bumped into KarikΓ³, a biochemist at the university, while waiting at the Xerox machine for articles to be photocopied. They began talking about their shared research interest. KarikΓ³, a native of Hungary, had spent decades researching messenger RNA – the biological instruction manual for the production of proteins in human cells – and was convinced of the potential it held for human therapeutics.

 

Just like that, a scientific dream team was formed.

Their research, however, was an uphill battle. For years, Weissman and Karikó’s experiments with RNA ended in failure. The key problem: The RNA was provoking an immune response that made their lab mice sick. But in 2005, with little support left from the scientific community, the pair had a breakthrough. They realized that by modifying the RNA, it would subvert detection by immune cells, and the proteins that the body synthesized from the RNA would train the immune system to recognize a specific foreign invader. With this modified RNA, the mice no longer got sick and showed the immunity Weissman and KarikΓ³ had hoped for.

 

So, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, it didn’t take long – just the amount of time to sequence the genome of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, create the mRNA based on that sequence and send the final product through the regulatory process – for a safe and effective Covid-19 mRNA vaccine to be approved for use.

 

Since then, millions of lives have been saved by the vaccines. Covid-19 is still a threat, but vaccinated and boosted Americans have largely been able to return to a normal cadence of life.

The Race Card Project[edit]

The Race Card Project was a project Norris began in 2010 in collaboration with NPR, inviting people to submit comments on their experience of race in the United States in six words.[17] Norris and collaborators won a 2014 Peabody Award for the project.[18]

In December 2015, Norris left NPR to focus on the Race Card Project.[19] In July 2020, Simon & Schuster announced a book deal for the project. The currently untitled book is based Norris' collection of hundreds of thousands of hidden conversations for The Race Card Project archive. It will be followed by a related children’s book.[20]

Gensler's public calendar showed that he only had a staff meeting on Aug. 7, 2021 while his private calendar lists a meeting with Clinton, according to a Fox News Digital review. And on Aug. 20, 2021, his public calendar lists a meeting with Soros, but hid the meeting's agenda which his private calendar shows was to discuss a forthcoming Wall Street Journal op-ed the business magnate was planning to write.

 

Gensler's private calendar revealing the discrepancies was obtained by the watchdog group Energy Policy Advocates and shared with Fox News Digital. The group was only able to obtain the internal records after filing a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the SEC.

 

In recent days, around the time Fox News Digital contacted the SEC, the agency updated Gensler's public calendar to include his meeting with Clinton in August 2021. Judge Aileen Cannon Dismisses Trump’s Case Challenging FBI Raid and Mar-a-Lago Document Seizure

 

Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, dismissed the case after a federal appeals court recently threw out the special master for Trump’s case.

 

In September, Judge Cannon appointed a special master to review the documents seized at Mar-a-Lago.

 

Biden’s corrupt Justice Department argued that a special master didn’t have a right to filter out the seized documents.

 

The court blasted Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, and said she erred in appointing Raymond Dearie as a special master to review documents seized from Mar-a-Lago.

 

β€œThe law is clear,” the judges wrote. β€œWe cannot write a rule that allows any subject of a search warrant to block government investigations after the execution of the warrant. Nor can we write a rule that allows only former presidents to do so.”

 

Two of the three judges on a panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals were nominated by Trump.

 

On Monday, Judge Aileen Cannon ended the case in a one-page signed order for lack of jurisdiction.

A federal judge on Monday dismissed former President Donald Trump’s lawsuit challenging the government’s access to materials seized from his Mar-a-Lago resort, marking the formal end to Trump’s monthslong legal fight following the FBI’s raid of his home.

 

The judge’s order came four days after Trump declined to appeal a higher-court ruling that canceled the appointment of a special master to review the thousands of items taken by federal agents during an Aug. 8 raid of Trump’s Florida residence.

 

Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, signed a one-page order dismissing the case for lack of jurisdiction. The order, filed in U.S. District Court in West Palm Beach, also terminated all hearings, deadlines and motions that were still pending in the case. These results were based on the publicly available data of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) from Oct. 31.

$36 Billion Biden Bail-Out Rescues Pensions Of Truckers And Other Union Workers

 

President Joe Biden Thursday announced a $36 billion bail-out of financially troubled pension plans covering some 350,000 union members, including many truck drivers.

 

The funds are part of $80 billion for multi-employer pension funds included in the American Rescue Plan, which was approved in 2021 to help stave off the fiscal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of those funds will be used to shore up the Teamsters' Central States Pension Fund, which includes employees and retires in more than 1,000 companies.

 

"… today, my administration is announcing that $36 billion of that money was going to β€” going to prevent the drastic cuts to workers’ hard-earned pension benefits β€” cuts that had been scheduled to occur within the next few years," said Biden during a ceremony Thursday. "That’s not going to happen. The cuts are not going to occur."

 

Biden said union workers and retirees were facing cuts of up to 60% of their benefits, starting in the next few years. That, said Biden, means some folks would have lost as much as $10,000 each year of their retirement.

 

"Instead," said Biden. "Thanks to today’s announcement, tens of thousands of union retirees and workers in states like Ohio, Michigan, Texas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri can go to bed tonight knowing their pension they worked so damn hard for is going to be there for them when they need it."

 

The announcement comes just days after some unions criticized the self-proclaimed pro-union president for signing legislation that imposed a contract settlement on the nation's freight railroad workers.

Study: COVID-19 Vaccination Poses Elevated Risk of Myocarditis Death Across All Age Groups

 

People across all age brackets are at a higher risk of death from heart inflammation after COVID-19 vaccination compared with the typical occurrence of myocarditis death. Researchers in Japan analyzed deaths caused by myocarditis where the condition was detected within 28 days of vaccination. They ultimately identified 38 deaths that fit the definition, about half of which were diagnosed by autopsy and or biopsy, with the others being determined through tools such as blood tests and electrocardiogram, according to a report from The Epoch Times.

 

The researchers then compared their data with the death from myocarditis rate from the general population before the pandemic, from 2017 through 2019.

 

β€œUsing the disclosed data by the Japanese government, we observed increased myocarditis mortality rate ratio in the SARS-CoV-2 vaccinated population compared with general population during three years pre-COVID-19 pandemic era, especially in young adults,” said Dr. Sintaroo Watanabe of the Japan Marine United Corporation and Dr. Rokuro Hama of the Japan Institute of Pharmacovigilance.

 

β€œHowever, not only in young adults, but also in the middle aged (40s) and in the elderly and overall vaccinated, increased risk of myocarditis death is associated with vaccination even without consideration of healthy vaccinee effect,” the researchers added.

 

The β€œhealthy vacinee effect” refers to how injections are sometimes not distributed to people with poor health, a factor that can muddy the visible impact of adverse effects.

 

According to Watanabe and Hama, even their lowest estimates of the effect found that the risk of COVID-19 vaccination on myocarditis death would be at least four times higher than the unadjusted mortality risk. β€œBased on the results of this study, it is necessary to inform public about [sic] that the risk of serious myocarditis including death may be far more serious than the risk reported before and that it occurs not only in young persons but also in elderly,” they said.

 

The study was published as a preprint ahead of peer review on medRvix (pdf), The Epoch Times reported.

Just when you thought our politics could not get more poisonous, a recent meeting in California suggests the past is mere prelude. The Washington Post, which revealed the powwow, described it as Biden family β€œallies” planning an offensive to blunt any investigation into the Bidens’ alleged multimillion-dollar influence-peddling schemes.

 

Republicans will see it more like the gathering of the Legion of (Democratic) Doom. Some of the most controversial political operatives are involved in the all-hands-on-deck effort to protect the Bidens.

 

The California meeting’s host was none other than Hunter Biden’s friend, agent and lawyer Kevin Morris. After Hunter was placed under investigation for, among other possible charges, tax evasion, Morris reportedly paid off as much as $2.8 million in back taxes for Hunter.

 

Morris, per the Washington Post, called for a β€œmore aggressive” response to those seeking to investigate the alleged influence peddling. That plan includes hitting critics, such as Fox News, with possible defamation lawsuits. (For full disclosure, I appear as a legal analyst on Fox News.)

 

The paper also reported Morris β€œoutlined extensive research on two potential witnesses against Hunter Biden β€” a spurned business partner named Tony Bobulinski and a computer repairman named John Paul Mac Isaac.” β€œSpurned” is hardly the sole or most relevant description of Bobulinski: The businessman was recruited by the Biden family to manage foreign deals and later directly contradicted President Biden’s claims that he knew nothing of those dealings. His testimony could present a serious threat in the coming House investigation in establishing not only the president’s knowledge but his possible receipt of proceeds from the deals.

 

Morris’ plan could easily be taken as a declaration of all-out war on potential witnesses against Hunter Biden.

Friend of Italian PM Giorgia Meloni among three killed in Rome coffee shop shooting

 

A friend of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and two other women were shot dead Sunday when a man opened fire at a Rome coffee shop.

 

The women were holding a board meeting for their condominium in Rome’s Fidene district when the 57-year-old gunman stormed in and opened fire, according to Italian authorities.

 

The suspect was overpowered and detained by other residents at the meeting. Arriving police arrested the man.

 

β€œHe came into the room, closed the door and shouted, β€˜I’ll kill you all’ and then started to shoot,” one witness said, according to Italian news agency Ansa.

 

The suspect was known to board members and had been in a series of disputes with the residents’ association, according to witnesses.

American Scientists Just Made A Huge Energy Breakthrough: REPORT

 

U.S. government scientists have recently managed to make significant progress toward successfully utilizing fusion energy, according to The Financial Times.

 

Scientists at the federal Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California managed to create net energy gain via a fusion reaction in the past two weeks, the FT reported Sunday, citing three people with knowledge of the experiment. Researchers have been attempting to produce more energy than they burn during fusion reactions, which power the sun, for 70 years; however, no reaction has produced more energy than it burns until now.

 

β€œInitial diagnostic data suggests another successful experiment at the National Ignition Facility,” the facility told the FT. β€œHowever, the exact yield is still being determined and we can’t confirm that it is over the threshold at this time.”

 

Scientists used the world’s most powerful laser to blast a pellet of hydrogen plasma, starting a process called inertial confinement fusion and producing more energy than was consumed, according to the FT. The reaction produced roughly 2.5 megajoules of energy, which was about 1.2 times more than the 2.1 megajoules of energy created by the laser.

 

The laboratory said that a successful experiment was conducted on the premises but added that scientists were still analyzing the results, the FT reported.

 

Fusion reactions require a small amount of hydrogen to conduct and can generate enormous amounts of energy while emitting no carbon and no persistent radioactive waste, according to the FT. The Biden administration is working to make fusion energy commercially applicable by giving $50 million to fund science and technology research.

 

Energy Secretary Granholm described fusion as β€œthe silver buckshot of a clean energy future,” according to a White House memo.

 

The Energy Department told the FT that it is planning to announce β€œa major scientific breakthrough” on Tuesday.

 

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Department of Energy did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Palestine child shot dead by Israel sniper in Jenin

 

The Palestinian Health Ministry said a girl child was killed by an Israeli sniper last night in Jenin City, north of the Occupied West Bank, The Palestinian Information Centre reports.

 

According to local sources, 16-year-old Jana Zakarnah was found dead on the roof of her home after an Israeli sniper targeted her and fatally injured her in the head.

Fierce armed clashes reportedly took place in the area between the soldiers and resistance fighters.

In a statement, Al-Qassam Brigades of Hamas affirmed that a group of its fighters and others exchanged fire with undercover soldiers from the Duvdevan unit in Al-Bayader area in Jenin City and targeted them with explosive devices.

 

Meanwhile, local sources reported that the Israeli Occupation Forces kidnapped three young men, including two brothers, from Jenin City during the same raid.

 

The Hebrew media claimed that one of the detainees was intending to carry out operations against Israeli targets.

Bergman was behind the release of former Marine Trevor Reed from Russia in April 2022. He also coordinated the release of Jewish-American journalist Danny Fenster from Myanmar in November 2021. "I don't think that's a coincidence at all," Ratcliffe said. "Jim Baker is the person who was involved in writing an exoneration memo for Hillary Clinton, having classified information on her server before the FBI ever interviewed her. He's the person who hand-carried information from Hillary Clinton's campaign lawyer, Michael Sussmann, into the FBI, false information about a relationship between the Trump campaign and the Russian Alfa Bank. It continued on with him trying to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Donald Trump after Donald Trump fired Jim Comey. He was involved in the leak investigation involving Jim Comey that was the subject of the FBI inspector general. It continues."

 

"In each of these cases, Maria, Jim Baker was working and taking actions that worked to the favor of Hillary Clinton or Democrats or to the left and universally working to the detriment of Republicans, conservatives and Donald Trump," he continued. Ratcliffe questioned whether Baker was sharing information with Twitter when he was still at the FBI.

 

"I don't think that Twitter just happened to, you know, find his resume on Monster.com," he said. "And I think what one of the things that needs to be determined is what was his relationship with Twitter before he got to Twitter and was he sharing information as the FBI general counsel, you know, to the benefit of one political party, to the detriment of another that then continued when he got to Twitter."

 

Musk fired Baker last week due to concerns over his "possible role in suppression of information important to the public dialogue," and it was later reported that Baker had a hand in vetting, without Musk’s knowledge, the first installment of the "Twitter Files," which detailed the company’s suppression of the New York Post’s Hunter Biden laptop story during the 2020 presidential election.…

The SEC updates calendars 'from time to time,' an agency spokesperson tells Fox News Digital

 

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler scrubbed mention of a meeting with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and key details of a meeting with billionaire Democratic donor George Soros from the public version of his calendar.

 

Gensler's public calendar showed that he only had a staff meeting on Aug. 7, 2021 while his private calendar lists a meeting with Clinton, according to a Fox News Digital review. And on Aug. 20, 2021, his public calendar lists a meeting with Soros, but hid the meeting's agenda which his private calendar shows was to discuss a forthcoming Wall Street Journal op-ed the business magnate was planning to write.

 

Gensler's private calendar revealing the discrepancies was obtained by the watchdog group Energy Policy Advocates and shared with Fox News Digital. The group was only able to obtain the internal records after filing a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the SEC.

 

In recent days, around the time Fox News Digital contacted the SEC, the agency updated Gensler's public calendar to include his meeting with Clinton in August 2021. As recently as Wednesday the public calendar didn't include the meeting and archived copies of the webpage from April also list just a meeting with staff.

 

An SEC spokesperson first responded to an inquiry by saying the public calendar listed the Clinton meeting. When sent a screen capture of the calendar showing the Clinton meeting wasn't listed, the spokesperson responded saying the agency updates calendars "from time to time" when it discovers that something is missing or inaccurate.

 

Gensler, a former Goldman Sachs executive and Obama administration official, was the chief financial officer for Clinton's presidential campaign in 2016. The Senate confirmed him to lead the SEC in April 2021, shortly after President Biden selected him for the high-profile position.

 

Archived copies of Gensler's public calendar also show the SEC hid September 2021 meetings with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Washington, D.C.-based consultant Minyon Moore, a former White House official. The public calendar has now been updated to show those meetings as well.

NASA’s Webb Reaches New Milestone in Quest for Distant Galaxies

 

An international team of astronomers has used data from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to report the discovery of the earliest galaxies confirmed to date. The light from these galaxies has taken more than 13.4 billion years to reach us, as these galaxies date back to less than 400 million years after the big bang, when the universe was only 2% of its current age.

 

Earlier data from Webb had provided candidates for such infant galaxies. Now, these targets have been confirmed by obtaining spectroscopic observations, revealing characteristic and distinctive patterns in the fingerprints of light coming from these incredibly faint galaxies.

 

β€œIt was crucial to prove that these galaxies do, indeed, inhabit the early universe. It’s very possible for closer galaxies to masquerade as very distant galaxies,” said astronomer and co-author Emma Curtis-Lake from the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom. β€œSeeing the spectrum revealed as we hoped, confirming these galaxies as being at the true edge of our view, some further away than Hubble could see! It is a tremendously exciting achievement for the mission.”

 

The observations resulted from a collaboration of scientists who led the development of two of the instruments on board Webb, the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and the Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec). The investigation of the faintest and earliest galaxies was the leading motivation behind the concepts for these instruments. In 2015 the instrument teams joined together to propose the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), an ambitious program that has been allocated just over one month of the telescope’s time spread over two years, and is designed to provide a view of the early universe unprecedented in both depth and detail. JADES is an international collaboration of more than eighty astronomers from ten countries. β€œThese results are the culmination of why the NIRCam and NIRSpec teams joined together to execute this observing program,” shared co-author Marcia Rieke, NIRCam principal investigator, of the University of Arizona in Tucson.

 

The first round of JADES observations focused on the area in and around the Hubble Space Telescope’s Ultra Deep Field. For over 20 years, this small patch of sky has been the target of nearly all large telescopes, building an exceptionally sensitive data set spanning the full electromagnetic spectrum. Now Webb is adding its unique view, providing the faintest and sharpest images yet obtained.

 

The JADES program began with NIRCam, using over 10 days of mission time to observe the field in nine different infrared colors, and producing exquisite images of the sky. The region is 15 times larger than the deepest infrared images produced by the Hubble Space Telescope, yet is even deeper and sharper at these wavelengths. The image is only the size a human appears when viewed from a mile away. However, it teems with nearly 100,000 galaxies, each caught at some moment in their history, billions of years in the past.

From these images, the galaxies in the early universe can be distinguished by a tell-tale aspect of their multi-wavelength colors. Light is stretched in wavelength as the universe expands, and the light from these youngest galaxies has been stretched by a factor of up to 14. Astronomers search for faint galaxies that are visible in the infrared but whose light abruptly cuts off at a critical wavelength. The location of the cutoff within each galaxy’s spectrum is shifted by the universe’s expansion. The JADES team scoured the Webb images looking for these distinctive candidates.

 

They then used the NIRSpec instrument, for a single observation period spanning three days totaling 28 hours of data collection. The team collected the light from 250 faint galaxies, allowing astronomers to study the patterns imprinted on the spectrum by the atoms in each galaxy. This yielded a precise measurement of each galaxy’s redshift and revealed the properties of the gas and stars in these galaxies.

 

β€œThese are by far the faintest infrared spectra ever taken,” said astronomer and co-author Stefano Carniani from Scuola Normale Superiore in Italy. β€œThey reveal what we hoped to see: a precise measurement of the cutoff wavelength of light due to the scattering of intergalactic hydrogen.”

 

Four of the galaxies studied are particularly special, as they were revealed to be at an unprecedentedly early epoch. The results provided spectroscopic confirmation that these four galaxies lie at redshifts above 10, including two at redshift 13. This corresponds to a time when the universe was approximately 330 million years old, setting a new frontier in the search for far-flung galaxies. These galaxies are extremely faint because of their great distance from us. Astronomers can now explore their properties, thanks to Webb’s exquisite sensitivity.

 

Astronomer and co-author Sandro Tacchella from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom explained, β€œIt is hard to understand galaxies without understanding the initial periods of their development. Much as with humans, so much of what happens later depends on the impact of these early generations of stars. So many questions about galaxies have been waiting for the transformative opportunity of Webb, and we’re thrilled to be able to play a part in revealing this story.”

 

JADES will continue in 2023 with a detailed study of another field, this one centered on the iconic Hubble Deep Field, and then return to the Ultra Deep Field for another round of deep imaging and spectroscopy. Many more candidates in the field await spectroscopic investigation, with hundreds of hours of additional time already approved.
