Knights of Malta

 

A NONDESCRIPT GREEN DOOR AT the end of a cul-de-sac features a stunningly well-framed, if comically tiny, view consisting of two nation-states and one country, with the dome of St. Peter’s perfectly situated in the center.

The doorway in question leads to the Priory of the Knights of Malta, the legendary crusader knights and religious order. Although the property has been in their hands for centuries, the site has seen many occupants. It originally held a fortified palace belonging to Alberico II, the ruler of Rome from 932-954, then became a Benedictine monastery before passing first into the hands of the Knights Templar in the 1100s, then finally to their brothers in arms, the Knights of Malta, in the 1400s.  As it holds extraterritorial status, it is not technically “Italy” within the walls.

The elegant building seen today is a small church known as Santa Maria del Priorato. It is the 18th-century handiwork of the famous architect and engraver Giovanni Battista Piranesi, also known for his romantic etchings depicting the city and for his dark and enigmatic series of imaginary prisons (Carceri d’Invenzione). The church’s architectural motifs evoke ships and the sea, inspired by the longstanding tradition of comparing the Aventine Hill to a ship. The design also incorporates many esoteric and Masonic symbols. Piranesi was buried at the Priory after his death in 1778. The estate also houses the Embassy of the Order of Malta to Italy.

The keyhole vista lines up perfectly with the garden, centered on the Vatican in the distance. No one seems to be able to say with certainty whether this was a beautifully planned peepshow—or just a lucky coincidence.

We were cheated out of much of what was Trumps agenda for four years, during which time “they” tried to prevent him from being elected, then inaugurated, and spent the rest of his term trying to remove him from office, and even impeached him AFTER his term, ALL on “Trumped-up” charges.

 

We were cheated out of effective people being appointed to key positions, due to approval processes, by people who HATE this country.

 

We were cheated out of several years of the “normalcy” that we had become accustomed to, due to “Covid”, and all of the idiocy that came with it, some of which we are still experiencing.

 

We were cheated out of the 2020 and 2022 elections, with no help from the courts, the legislatures, or the executive branch, at the federal or state levels.

 

The military and law enforcement have failed to step up. It is arguable that they would stand against their own sworn oaths of office, if so ordered. They have become a sham.

 

And the exposure from the Twitter files shows direct involvement of the IC (Intelligence Community - ALL OF THEM) AGAINST We the People and the Constitution.

 

And now, “they” are trying to prevent him from running again; the best we can expect is more of the same.

 

We will NOT be able to vote our way out of this mess; nor will we be able to pray our way out; though I caution against giving up either.

 

IMO, there is NO effective “Constitutional remedy”; nor is there a means for a “redress of grievances”.

 

We are at the point of the “long train of abuses”, cited in the Declaration of Independence.

History of the Quirinal Palace

Italy’s version of the White House, that is the official residence of the Presidente della Repubblica, is perched atop the Quirinale Hill, the highest of Rome’s seven hills. It wasn’t built originally as the official residence of Italy’s “President.” The original palace was built over ruins of pagan temples and Roman baths situated here in ancient Rome, by Pope Gregory XIII in 1583 as a summer papal residence. If we can imagine the city of Rome at that time, the heart of the city hugged the river and the Vatican, so to sit on top of a hill was less developed and considered countryside, certainly preferred over the humid, swampy parts of the city like St. John in Lateran (the original home of the Pope) or St. Peter’s.

 

Napolean even selected the Quirinal Palace as his official residence, undertaking several renovations but his empire was overthrown in 1814 before he could actually move in.

 

By 1870 the Quirinal Palace was not only the Pope’s official residence and where several conclaves to elect the new Pope took place but also held the civil offices for governing what was left of the Papal States. In 1871 the Papal States having been overthrown, Italy became the new Kingdom of Italy, Rome the official capital, and the Quirinal Palace the official residence of the Italian Royal Family. Traces of Italy’s Royal Families are still evident, especially in large collections of celebratory porcelain services on view. Elegant china, silver and gold tableware, trays, serving dishes, candlesticks and glassware, even long intricate table mirrors which were used to reflect important ceiling frescoes for easier viewing.

 

In 1946 after WWII Italy’s monarchy was abolished and the Quirinal Palace became the official home of the Presidente della Repubblica as it is today. To date, the Quirinal Palace has housed 30 Popes, 4 Kings of Italy and 12 Presidenti della Repubblica. The palace complex covers nearly 1.2 million sq ft, with 1,200 rooms, making it the 9th largest palace in the world by area. By comparison, the United States’ White House is 1/20th the size.

MCCARTHY CAVES: California RINO Offers HUGE Concession to Conservatives in Exchange for Speakership Votes

 

Looks like Kevin McCarthy can actually do math after all. He now understands there is no pathway to Speaker of the House without conservatives and is now offering a significant compromise to get their votes.

 

CNN reported Friday that McCarthy has pledged to reduce the threshold required to oust a sitting speaker. He had previously made this a red line in negotiations with House conservatives, vowing to never give in.

 

One cannot understate the significance of this concession by McCarthy. This has been arguably the top demand from McCarthy’s critics in exchange for possibly supporting his Speaker bid.

 

Present rules within the Republican caucus state that majority support from members is required to force a floor vote to remove the Speaker. McCarthy is looking at shrinking the threshold to as low as five votes.

 

House Republicans will welcome 222 members to Congress in a few days so McCarthy is offering to reduce the threshold for ouster by over 95%. Talk about desperation.

 

Here are the key details from CNN:

 

McCarthy has been trying to find a compromise threshold that would appease his critics enough to earn their speaker vote, while still being palatable to the rest of the House GOP, and has been sounding out all corners of the conference in private phone calls this week.

 

One of the numbers that has come up in recent conversations between McCarthy and GOP lawmakers – and which has not been previously reported – is a five-person threshold, according to two of the Republican sources.

 

Currently, the majority of the House GOP is required to call for the so-called motion to vacate the speaker’s chair. But some conservative hardliners are pushing for a single member to be able to call for such a vote, which they see as an important mechanism to hold the speaker accountable.

 

A five-person threshold, however, may be too low for the moderate wing of the party, some of whom have privately suggested they would be willing to agree on a 50-person threshold.

 

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Should McCarthy give too much to the GOP’s conservative wing, he seriously risks losing votes from his fellow RINOS. But if McCarthy fails to capitulate completely, a pathway to the speakership is nearly impossible.

 

Conservative McCarthy opponent South Carolina Congressman Ralph Norman, for his part, does not trust McCarthy to keep his word on lowering the threshold. Instead, he wants an agreement in writing that McCarthy will find impossible to weasel out of.

 

“The ‘devil is in the details’ as far as threshold & other rule concessions,” Norman said. “Until the details are spelled out, in writing and sealed with social media posts, people will not move on votes.”

DANVILLE — A female employee of Geisinger Medical Center was shot to death in a parking lot Friday evening, initiating a lockdown and a manhunt for the shooter.

Idaho suspect Bryan Kohberger turned ‘aggressive’ in high school: former friend

Nick Mcloughlin, of Pleasant Valley, Pennsylvania, told the Daily Beast he was appalled when he learned his high school buddy Bryan Christopher Kohberger was arrested Friday in connection to the brutal November slayings.

 

The two had been friends during their teenage years, Mcloughlin said. They spent half their days at Pleasant Valley High and the other half taking heating and air conditioning work classes at Monroe County’s vocational school.

 

But the relationship dissolved after Mcloughlin said Kohberger underwent a personality shift over the course of a summer.

 

Mcloughlin said Kohberger had been a “down to earth” and overweight teen when they wrapped up their junior year. When they started their senior year, Kohberger was “thinner than a rail” and developed an “aggressive” personality.

 

Kohberger also began picking up boxing lessons and was itching to put his new skills to use, according to his former friend.

 

After graduating from Pleasant Valley High School, Kohberger went on to earn a psychology degree from Northampton Community College in 2018, the school told The Daily Beast.

 

Kohberger continued to work in the Pleasant Valley School District for several years as a school security officer, but left the job last year.

 

He then received a master of arts in criminal justice from DeSales University in 2022.

BOJ sets monthly record for bond purchases in December ($130B 17T yen)

 

The Bank of Japan's purchases of long-term Japanese government bonds exceeded 17 trillion yen ($130 billion) in December, the largest monthly total on record, underpinned by its efforts to curb rising interest rates. This surpassed the previous record of 16 trillion yen from June. As part of its yield curve control policy, the BOJ has sought to guide short-term interest rates to minus 0.1% and long-term interest rates to around zero. The target band for long-term rates was widened from 25 basis points to 50 points at the central bank's Dec. 19-20 monetary policy meeting in an effort to improve market functions. The BOJ also decided to increase its scheduled monthly purchases of JGBs to around 9 trillion yen from 7.3 trillion yen. With the bank's broader target band for long-term rates, yields on JGBs with a wide range of maturities also rose. Yields on newly issued 10-year JGBs, which serve as a benchmark for long-term rates, touched 0.48% at one point. In addition to its established practice of purchasing unlimited amounts of Japanese government bonds at a specified yield, the BOJ carries out extraordinary purchases on a daily basis, mainly of JGBs with 10 years or less left to maturity. Efforts to contain the rise in interest rates led to the significant increase in JGB-buying.
