It has been 7 years. We have had 0 arrests and 0 awakening. I have personally spent the last 7 years doing everything I can to help fight evil in this world. To date all I have to show for it is strained relationships and a job that is literally going fucking nowhere.

 

Maybe it's my fault for expecting anything to change. It's certainly my fault for trying to fix things even though I knew I was fighting an impossible battle. But fuck. I know what I found. It has been 7 years. We have had 0 arrests and 0 awakening. I have personally spent the last 7 years doing everything I can to help fight evil in this world. To date all I have to show for it is strained relationships and a job that is literally going fucking nowhere.

The study of mechanical or "formal" reasoning began with philosophers and mathematicians in antiquity. The study of mathematical logic led directly to Alan Turing's theory of computation, which suggested that a machine, by shuffling symbols as simple as "0" and "1", could simulate any conceivable act of mathematical deduction. This insight that digital computers can simulate any process of formal reasoning is known as the Churchโ€“Turing thesis.

This, along with concurrent discoveries in neurobiology, information theory, and cybernetics, led researchers to consider the possibility of building an electronic brain. The first work that is now generally recognized as AI was McCullouch and Pitts' 1943 formal design for Turing-complete "artificial neurons".

 

By the 1950s, two visions for how to achieve machine intelligence emerged.

''One vision, known as Symbolic AI or GOFAI, '' was to use computers to create a symbolic representation of the world and systems that could reason about the world. Proponents included Allen Newell, Herbert A. Simon, and Marvin Minsky. Closely associated with this approach was the "heuristic search" approach, which likened intelligence to a problem of exploring a space of possibilities for answers.

'' The second vision, known as the connectionist approach, sought to achieve intelligence through learning.'' Proponents of this approach, most prominently Frank Rosenblatt, sought to connect Perceptron in ways inspired by connections of neurons. James Manyika and others have compared the two approaches to the mind (Symbolic AI) and the brain (connectionist). Manyika argues that symbolic approaches dominated the push for artificial intelligence in this period, due in part to its connection to the intellectual traditions of Descarte, Boole, Gottlob Frege, Bertrand Russell, and others. Connectionist approaches based on cybernetics or artificial neural networks were pushed to the background but have gained new prominence in recent decades.

 

The field of AI research was born at a workshop at Dartmouth College in 1956. The attendees became the founders and leaders of AI research. They and their students produced programs that the press described as "astonishing": computers were learning checkers strategies, solving word problems in algebra, proving logical theorems, and speaking English. By the middle of the 1960s, research in the U.S. was heavily funded by the Department of Defense and laboratories had been established around the world.

 

Researchers in the 1960s and the 1970s were convinced that symbolic approaches would eventually succeed in creating a machine with artificial general intelligence and considered this the goal of their field. Herbert Simon predicted, "machines will be capable, within twenty years, of doing any work a man can do". Marvin Minsky agreed, writing, "within a generation โ€ฆ the problem of creating 'artificial intelligence' will substantially be solved". They had failed to recognize the difficulty of some of the remaining tasks. Progress slowed and in 1974, in response to the criticism of Sir James Lighthill and ongoing pressure from the US Congress to fund more productive projects, both the U.S. and British governments cut off exploratory research in AI. The next few years would later be called an "AI winter", a period when obtaining funding for AI projects was difficult.

 

In the early 1980s, AI research was revived by the commercial success of expert systems, a form of AI program that simulated the knowledge and analytical skills of human experts. By 1985, the market for AI had reached over a billion dollars. At the same time, Japan's fifth-generation computer project inspired the U.S. and British governments to restore funding for academic research. However, beginning with the collapse of the Lisp Machine market in 1987, AI once again fell into disrepute, and a second, longer-lasting winter began.

Jacinda Ardern has announced her shock resignation as New Zealand Prime Minister, while also calling an election on October 14.

 

Ms Ardern choked back tears on Thursday as she said she did not have the energy to seek re-election.

 

She said her final day in office will be February 7.

 

"I know what this job takes. And I know that I no longer have enough in the tank to do it justice," she said.

 

Ms Ardern said she had the support of her family to continue, but they were also on board with her decision.

 

She said she would be there when her daughter Neve started school next year, and to her husband added: "To Clarke, let's finally get married."

 

Ms Ardern has been New Zealand's Prime Minister since 2017.

 

"Itโ€™s one thing to lead your country through peace time, itโ€™s another to lead them through crisis. I had the privilege of being alongside NZ in a crisis and they placed their faith in me," she said.

 

"I have never led on my own,โ€ Ms Ardern said, stating that she has always relied on her team.

 

With regards to the upcoming elections in October, Ms Ardern said she still believed New Zealand Labor would win, but signalled that Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson would not put himself forward for a run at the party leadership.

Plunging the sport into its biggest corruption scandal, 10 Chinese snooker players have been charged over their alleged roles in match-fixing.

An investigation by the integrity unit of snooker's governing body has resulted in some of the biggest names in the sport โ€” including 16th-ranked Yan Bingtao and ninth-ranked Zhao Xintong โ€” being accused of corrupt activity, such as fixing matches, approaching players to manipulate matches and betting on matches.

 

The 10 Chinese players have been suspended and banned from competing on the World Snooker Tour until the conclusion of the case, the sport's governing body said.

 

There will be a formal hearing, followed by an independent disciplinary tribunal.

 

Liang Wenbo โ€” a former finalist in the UK Championship โ€” was the first player to be suspended, in October.

 

He has been charged with "being concerned in fixing matches and approaching players to fix matches on the World Snooker Tour, seeking to obstruct the investigation and failing to cooperate with" the investigation by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association.

 

Nine more players were suspended over the following two months, with Yan (the 2021 Masters champion) and Zhao (the UK Championship winner from the same year) among them.

 

The Masters and the UK Championship are traditionally the two biggest events on the snooker schedule after the World Championship.

 

Bingtao has been charged with "fixing matches โ€ฆ and betting on snooker", while Xintong has been charged with "being concerned in fixing matches โ€ฆ and betting on snooker".

 

They were both barred from competing in the Masters last week.

 

Other players charged are Li Hang, Lu Ning, Zhang Jiankang, Chen Zifan, Chang Bingyu, Zhao Jianbo and Bai Langning.

'We will move on'

 

Snooker has exploded in popularity in China over the past decade, mainly thanks to the success of Ding Junhui, who has won the Masters and the UK Championship and been runner-up in the World Championship.

 

Many Chinese players are based in an academy in the English city of Sheffield, where the World Championship is held every year.

 

"The whole process has been very upsetting and, potentially, life-changing for people," World Snooker chairman Jason Ferguson said.

 

"It's very damaging but I do think the damage is short term. We have to deliver world-class live entertainment and know the sport is clean. We will move on."

 

There have been no tournaments in China since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

"It's a big commercial market for snooker," Mr Ferguson said.

 

"Despite this ongoing issue, the mood about our events is very positive. Our return to China is inevitable."

TRANSPARENCY, DECLASSIFICATION, AND THE OBAMA PRESIDENCY

On January 21, 2009, stating, "My Administration is committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in Government," President Barack Obama announced a sweeping series of transparency reforms.

 

In its first year, the Obama dministration implemented a host of policy changes designed to deliver on that promise.

 

In one of his first official acts, President Barack Obama revoked the Bush administration's Executive Order (EO) 13233. The Bush EO severely limited access by the public to presidential records and gave former presidents, their heirs and, for the first time vice presidents, the ability to delay or prevent the release of records.

 

In addition to revoking President Bush's executive order on presidential records, the President issued a Presidential Memorandum on Transparency and Open Government, and a Presidential Memorandum on the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), directing all members of his administration to operate under principles of openness and transparency.

 

On March 19, 2009, Attorney General Eric Holder issued comprehensive new Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) guidelines that direct all executive branch departments and agencies to apply a presumption of openness when administering the FOIA.

 

The memo rescinded the guidelines issued in 2001 during the Bush administration, by former Attorney General John Ashcroft. The Ashcroft FOIA Memorandum established a "sound legal basis" standard. Under this standard, agencies were required to reach the judgment that their use of a FOIA exemption was on sound footing, both factually and legally, whenever they withhold requested information. The Ashcroft guidelines had the practical effect of encouraging a presumption against releasing any questionable materials.

 

On December 8, 2009, the White House issued an Open Government Directive requiring federal agencies to take immediate, specific steps to open their operations up to the public. In addition to the directive, the Administration released the "Open Government Progress Report to the American People"โ€”an analysis of the steps already taken to increase transparency and plans for future initiatives.

 

On December 29, 2009, the President issued Executive Order 13526 to significantly improve the system for classifying, safeguarding, and declassifying national security information, including the establishment of the National Declassification Center within the National Archives to conduct a unified and efficient declassification review of historically important older records. The President also issued a memo to the heads of federal agencies highlighting the importance of implementing these changes promptly and effectively.

 

Despite the issuance of these numerous executive orders and directives, as President Obama nears the end of his first term, how well has he done in meeting the commitment he made that his administration the most open, transparent and accountable in history?

 

On August 3, 2012, the Washington Post published an article entitled, "Obama administration struggles to live up to its own transparency promises." The Post concluded, "Three years later, new evidence suggests that administration officials have struggled to overturn the long-standing culture of secrecy in Washington. Some of these high-profile transparency measures have stalled, and by some measures the government is keeping more secrets than before."

 

For example, the National Declassification Center (NDC) was tasked by the Administration with reviewing and declassifying a 371 million-page backlog of records by December 2013. A recent status report shows the NDC will be hard pressed to come close to meeting that deadline. As of June 30, 2012, only 51.1 million pages have completed all processing and of that number 41.8 million pages have been released to the public.

 

The Post also found that there was initially improvement by federal agencies in the number of FOIA requests that were granted in 2010 and that backlogs of requests had decreased. But in 2011, the trend reversed with agencies denial of requests increasing by 10 percentโ€ฆ..

Germany Says US Must Lead Way On Tanks For Ukraine, As GOP Also Piles On Pressure

 

Germany just upped the pressure on the Biden administration regarding growing calls to send Ukraine M1 Abrams tanks, which the White House has thus far resisted, fearing further escalation with Russia.

 

It comes as Germany just appointed a new defense minister, Boris Pistorius, after scandal-plagued Christine Lambrecht resigned the day prior, after also long being accused of representing weakness on arming Ukraine. The Scholz government said it will be up for the new defense minister to mull the question of tanks for Ukraine, as Kiev's pleas grow louder.

 

"Germany wonโ€™t allow allies to ship German-made tanks to Ukraine to help its defense against Russia nor send its own systems unless the U.S. agrees to send American-made battle tanks, senior German officials said on Wednesday," according to fresh Wall Street Journal reporting.

 

Multiple NATO countries have now expressed their willingness to send the highly sophisticated German-made Leopard tanks to Ukraine, namely, Poland, Denmark and Finland - but Berlin has to sign off on it first.

 

This month has witnessed for the first time in the 11-month long war growing political momentum to ship Western-made heavy tanks to the Ukrainian battlefield, instead of the infantry carriers and Soviet tanks thus far supplied.

 

The German reluctance in approval comes after the opening months of the Russian invasion triggered an about-face in German foreign policy, as Berlin has now abandoned its historic neutrality. "One canโ€™t differentiate between direct exports (of German-made tanks) and exports by third countries," a senior German official was quoted in the WSJ report as explaining of Berlin's stance.

 

But it seems Germany is now clearly signaling that Washington must lead the way in opening the flood gates of a heavy weapons system as significant as tanks onto the Ukraine battlefield. But perhaps it's also calling a US bluff of sorts, essentially telling Biden: 'wanna talk big on Ukraine?โ€ฆ you first'.

 

The timing of the WSJ's German tank story is interesting, also given the same day top Republican committee chairs in Congress are ramping up the pressure on Biden, demanding that the US approve what are widely seen as 'weapons needed to win' against Russia.

Defense Contractors Rake in Millions as U.S. Seeks to Supply More Weapons to Ukraine

 

Defense contractors are raking in millions of dollars as the Biden administration pledges to continue supporting Ukraine for โ€œas long as it takes.โ€

 

The U.S. Army announced in December it awarded an $84 million contract to Raytheon Missiles and Defense for more than 1,000 Excalibur 1B precision munitions to replenish those sent to Ukraine.

 

Just weeks before, the Army awarded a $432 million contract to Lockheed Martin to replenish High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers that the U.S. and allies sent to Ukraine, according to Defense News. The Army also awarded a $1.2 billion contract to Raytheon for six National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) batteries for Ukraine.

 

This week, the Biden administration is expected to announce more military assistance to Ukraine when U.S. defense leaders meet with their counterparts in Germany for the eighth meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group.

 

The U.S. pledged $400 million in military equipment at the groupโ€™s last meeting on November 23. CNN reported on Wednesday that the administration is putting together one of its largest aid packages ever.

 

So far, the U.S. has allocated $113 billion in assistance to Ukraine, which includes $24.2 billion in security assistance since the conflict began in February 2022.

 

Much of what the U.S. has supplied to Ukraine has come from its militaryโ€™s own stocks. The Biden administration has dipped into those inventories 29 times, using what is known as โ€œPresidential Drawdown Authority,โ€ or PDA.

 

But now the flow of weapons is running up against current supplies and the production capacity of the defense industry.

 

For one thing, the U.S. military needs to keep enough weapons for its own war plans, as well as for its units to continue training and maintaining.

 

U.S. military and defense officials have โ€œrepeatedlyโ€ told members of Congress and their staff that they must keep a certain amount of weapons mandated by Pentagon war plans, Foreign Policy reported last month. Those weapons reportedly include Stingers, Javelins, 155 mm artillery, and Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (GMLRS) munitions.

 

Second, some weapons in high demand in Ukraine had stopped being produced or were being made in only very limited supplies.

 

For example, Raytheon closed its Stinger production line in December 2020, only several months before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In July 2021, the company won a contract to manufacture more but mainly for international governments, according to Reuters.

 

Raytheon CEO Greg Hayes said during an April 2022 conference call that the Pentagon had not purchased a Stinger in 18 years and that some of the components were no longer commercially available. โ€œSo weโ€™re going to have to go out and redesign some of the electronics in the missile of the seeker head. Thatโ€™s going to take us a little bit of time,โ€ he said, according to the report.

 

In addition to continuing to supply Ukraine, the U.S. military is trying to backfill what it has already sent, and it will apparently cost the American taxpayer more to keep both endeavors going.

Obama Quietly Signs โ€œCountering Disinformation And Propaganda Actโ€

Late on Friday, with the US population embracing the upcoming holidays and oblivious of most news emerging from the administration, Obama quietly signed into law the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which authorizes $611 billion for the military in 2017.

In a statement, Obama said that:

Today, I have signed into law S. 2943, the โ€œNational Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017.โ€ This Act authorizes fiscal year 2017 appropriations principally for the Department of Defense and for Department of Energy national security programs, provides vital benefits for military personnel and their families, and includes authorities to facilitate ongoing operations around the globe. It continues many critical authorizations necessary to ensure that we are able to sustain our momentum in countering the threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and to reassure our European allies, as well as many new authorizations that, among other things, provide the Departments of Defense and Energy more flexibility in countering cyber-attacks and our adversariesโ€™ use of unmanned aerial vehicles.โ€

Much of the balance of Obamaโ€™s statement blamed the GOP for Guantanamoโ€™s continued operation and warned that โ€œunless the Congress changes course, it will be judged harshly by history,โ€ Obama said. Obama also said Congress failed to use the bill to reduce wasteful overhead (like perhaps massive F-35 cost overruns?) or modernize military health care, which he said would exacerbate budget pressures facing the military in the years ahead.

But while the passage of the NDAA โ€“ and the funding of the US military โ€“ was hardly a surprise, the biggest news is what was buried deep inside the provisions of the Defense Authortization Act.

Recall that as we reported in early June, โ€œabill to implement the U.S.โ€™ very own de facto Ministry of Truth had been quietly introduced in Congress. As with any legislation attempting to dodge the public spotlight the Countering Foreign Propaganda and Disinformation Act of 2016 marks a further curtailment of press freedom and another avenue to stultify avenues of accurate information. Introduced by Congressmen Adam Kinzinger and Ted Lieu, H.R. 5181 seeks a โ€œwhole-government approach without the bureaucratic restrictionsโ€ to counter โ€œforeign disinformation and manipulation,โ€ which they believe threaten the worldโ€™s โ€œsecurity and stability.โ€

Also called the Countering Information Warfare Act of 2016 (S. 2692), when introduced in March by Sen. Rob Portman, the legislation represents a dramatic return to Cold War-era government propaganda battles. โ€œThese countries spend vast sums of money on advanced broadcast and digital media capabilities, targeted campaigns, funding of foreign political movements, and other efforts to influence key audiences and populations,โ€ Portman explained, adding that while the U.S. spends a relatively small amount on its Voice of America, the Kremlin provides enormous funding for its news organization, RT.

โ€œSurprisingly,โ€ Portman continued, โ€œthere is currently no single U.S. governmental agency or department charged with the national level development, integration and synchronization of whole-of-government strategies to counter foreign propaganda and disinformation.โ€

Fast forward to December 8, when the โ€œCountering Disinformation and Propaganda Actโ€ passed in the Senate,quietly inserted inside the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) Conference Report.

And now, following Fridayโ€™s Obama signing of the NDAA on Friday evening, the Countering Disinformation and Propaganda Act is now lawโ€ฆ.

California: 10.8 Million Mail-In Ballots โ€˜Unaccounted Forโ€™ in 2022 Elections

 

More than 10.8 million mail-in ballots went โ€œunaccounted forโ€ in Californiaโ€™s midterm elections last year, data published by the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) reveals.

 

In 2022, California election officials mailed out more than 22.1 million ballots to registered voters, the data published by PILF shows. Of those, more than 10.8 million went โ€œunaccounted forโ€ as researchers said election officials can only make assumptions as to what happened with the ballots.

 

โ€œTypically, when a polling place opens and closes, there is an accounting of all election materials. Significant issues arise when incidents occur such as ballots disappearing at poll closing time. With mass mail elections, problems accumulate,โ€ PILF researchers state:

 

After accounting for polling place votes and rejected ballots in November 2022, there were more than 10 million ballots left outstanding, meaning election officials do not know what happened to them. It is fair to assume that the bulk of these were ignored or ultimately thrown out by the intended recipients. But, under mass mail elections, we can only assume what happened. Mail voting practices have an insurmountable information gap. The public cannot know how many ballots were disregarded, delivered to wrong mailboxes, or even withheld from the proper recipient by someone at the same address. [Emphasis added]

 

Meanwhile, more than 226,000 mail-in ballots were rejected in the 2022 primary and general midterm elections in California, including more than 120,000 mail-in ballots that were thrown out in the general election.

 

The data published by PILF finds that more than 800 mail-in ballots were rejected after California election officials discovered the person who cast them had already voted.

 

Likewise, more than 57,000 mail-in ballots were rejected for arriving late, nearly 48,000 for not having a matching signature, nearly 12,000 for having no signature, and 660 for refusing to provide any identification.

โ€œThere are many reasons mail ballots fail ultimately to count. No one casting a ballot at home can correct an error before itโ€™s too late,โ€ Adams said. โ€œCaliforniaโ€™s vote-by-mail demonstration should serve as a warning to state legislators elsewhere.โ€

Obama gives himself control of all communication systems in America

 

US President Barack Obama quietly signed his name to an Executive Order on Friday, allowing the White House to control all private communications in the country in the name of national security.

 

President Obama released his latest Executive Order on Friday, July 6, a 2,205-word statement offered as the โ€œAssignment of National Security and Emergency Preparedness Communications Functions.โ€ And although the president chose not to commemorate the signing with much fanfare, the powers he provides to himself and the federal government under the latest order are among the most far-reaching yet of any of his executive decisions.

 

โ€œThe Federal Government must have the ability to communicate at all times and under all circumstances to carry out its most critical and time sensitive missions,โ€ the president begins the order. โ€œSurvivable, resilient, enduring and effective communications, both domestic and international, are essential to enable the executive branch to communicate within itself and with: the legislative and judicial branches; State, local, territorial and tribal governments; private sector entities; and the public, allies and other nations.โ€

 

President Obama adds that it is necessary for the government to be able to reach anyone in the country during situations it considers critical, writing, โ€œSuch communications must be possible under all circumstances to ensure national security, effectively manage emergencies and improve national resilience.โ€ Later the president explains that such could be done by establishing a โ€œjoint industry-Government center that is capable of assisting in the initiation, coordination, restoration and reconstitution of NS/EP [national security and emergency preparedness] communications services or facilities under all conditions of emerging threats, crisis or emergency.โ€

 

โ€œThe views of all levels of government, the private and nonprofit sectors, and the public must inform the development of NS/EP communications policies, programs and capabilities,โ€ he adds.

 

On the governmentโ€™s official website for the National Communications Systems, the government explains that that โ€œinfrastructure includes wireline, wireless, satellite, cable, and broadcasting, and provides the transport networks that support the Internet and other key information systems,โ€ suggesting that the president has indeed effectively just allowed himself to control the countryโ€™s Internet access.

 

In order to allow the White House to reach anyone within the US, the president has put forth a plan to establish a high-level committee calling from agents with the Department of Homeland Security, Pentagon, Federal Communications Commission and other government divisions to ensure that his new executive order can be implemented.

 

In explaining the order, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) writes that the president has authorized the DHS "the authority to seize private facilities when necessary, effectively shutting down or limiting civilian communications."

 

In Section 5 of his order, President Obama outlines the specific department and agency responsibilities that will see through his demands. In a few paragraphs, President Obama explains that Executive Committee that will oversee his order must be supplied with โ€œthe technical support necessary to develop and maintain plans adequate to provide for the security and protection of NS/EP communications,โ€ and that that same body will be in tasked with dispatching that communiquรฉ โ€œto the Federal Government and State, local, territorial and trial governments,โ€ by means of โ€œcommercial, Government and privately owned communications resources.โ€

 

Later, the president announces that the Department of Homeland Security will be tasked with drafting a plan during the next 60 days to explain how the DHS will command the governmentโ€™s Emergency Telecommunications Service, as well as other telecom conduits. In order to be able to spread the White Houseโ€™s message across the country, President Obama also asks for the purchasing of equipment and services that will enable such.

In his State Of The Union Address on February 12, President Obama cited a number of new initiatives on which he intended the federal government to take action. The area that understandably caused the biggest furor was the presidentโ€™s reference to his proposals for increased federal restrictions on private firearm ownership, which he had outlined the previous month in a national address capitalizing on the December 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

 

Another proposal of the president focused on โ€œone of the most fundamental rights of a democracy: the right to vote.โ€ After the applause died down, President Obama declared: โ€œWhen any Americans, no matter where they live or what their party, are denied that right because they canโ€™t afford to wait for five or six or seven hours just to cast their ballot, we are betraying our ideals.โ€ More enthusiastic applause.

 

โ€œSo tonight,โ€ said the president, โ€œIโ€™m announcing a nonpartisan commission to improve the voting experience in America. And it definitely needs improvement.โ€

 

Last week, on March 28, just before the Easter weekend, the White House press office released President Obamaโ€™s latest executive order, on the โ€œEstablishment of the Presidential Commission of Election Administration.โ€

 

The creation of the new commission appears to portend even greater activism and interference by the administration in the upcoming mid-term elections than it has already shown itself capable of in the 2012 elections. President Obamaโ€™s Department of Justice, recall, sued to block state efforts at implementing voter identification laws that had been passed by state legislatures to prevent voter fraud. The administration did not hesitate to trespass on this constitutionally reserved right of the states, but joined with media allies and Democrat activists in denouncing these sensible measures as โ€œvoter suppression,โ€ and, of course, suggesting that the measures were racist in nature and aimed at disenfranchising black and Hispanic voters. At the same time, the DOJ chose not to pursue action against militant Black Panther activists that were actually involved in voter suppression through threats and intimidation at polling places.

Section 3 of the new executive order states:

 

The Commission shall identify best practices and otherwise make recommendations to promote the efficient administration of elections in order to ensure that all eligible voters have the opportunity to cast their ballots without undue delay, and to improve the experience of voters facing other obstacles in casting their ballots, such as members of the military, overseas voters, voters with disabilities, and voters with limited English proficiency.

 

Interesting that the executive order mentions โ€œthe experience of voters facing other obstacles in casting their ballots, such as members of the military,โ€ especially since the Obama administration has been credibly accused by many military veterans organizations of suppressing the military vote (see here and here).

 

A McClatchy News Service report last year noted:

 

In 2010, of the approximately 2 million military and overseas voters accounted for in data reported by the states to the Election Assistance Commission, only 4.6 percent of those voters were able to cast an absentee ballot that counted, according to the Military Voter Protection Projectโ€™s analysis of that data from the federal Election Assistance Commission, which tracks participation in voting.

 

This means that more than an astounding 95 percent of military and overseas voters failed to vote โ€” for one reason or another. According to the Military Voter Protection Project, the Department of Defense under President Obama has consistently taken many actions to undermine the 2009 Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment Act (MOVE Act), which was enacted to facilitate access to absentee ballots for our military personnel serving overseas. Now the administration is citing those obstacles that it helped to create as proof of the need for even more interference in state elections.

 

The 2014 midterm congressional elections will be crucially important. Recent polls (see here, and here) show President Obamaโ€™s approval ratings sliding downhill since reelection, with only 47 percent of Americans saying they approve of his performance, down eight points since December, according to a Pew Research Center survey. Team Obama is well aware that the party of an incumbent president traditionally loses Senate and House seats in midterm elections. In times of economic trouble, the presidentโ€™s party tends to get an extra-harsh shellackingโ€ฆ
