Only a tiny fraction of U.S. counties account for nearly all of the country’s homicides, according to research released Tuesday that showed a striking concentration where killings take place.

 

The worst 31 counties — generally urban jurisdictions — have about a fifth of the country’s population but accounted for 42% of the country’s homicides in 2020, said John R. Lott Jr., president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, which conducted the study.

 

The worst 5% of counties accounted for 73% of homicides. That ticked up slightly from 69% in 2014 and 70% in 2016.

 

Meanwhile, 52% of counties recorded no homicides in 2020, and another 16% recorded only a single killing.

 

“Murders are a problem in a very small percentage of the counties in the United States,” Mr. Lott told The Washington Times.

 

Even in those higher-homicide counties, the crime is still concentrated, he said.

 

Mr. Lott crunched the data for Los Angeles County and found that 10% of the county’s ZIP codes accounted for 41% of the homicides. Another 10% accounted for 26% more.

 

“Murder isn’t a nationwide problem. It’s a problem in a small set of urban areas, and even in those counties murders are concentrated in small areas inside them, and any solution must reduce those murders,” he wrote in his report.

Mr. Lott relied on FBI data for his study, using the bureau’s Supplementary Homicide Report. For states that don’t report data to the FBI or where the data is believed to be a dramatic undercount, he relied on public uniform crime reports.

 

Cook County in Illinois — home to Chicago — led the country with 775 reported homicides in 2020. It was followed by Los Angeles County at 691, Houston home Harris County in Texas at 537, Philadelphia at 495 and New York’s five boroughs at 465.

 

Mr. Lott’s statistics show those five jurisdictions alone combined for about 15% of the year’s homicides.

 

They also generally had authorities who pursued less stringent approaches to crime. Mr. Lott said the correlation with the data is tough to avoid.

 

“It’s primarily in those heavily urban areas where you’re having the most lax approaches to crime on average, and that’s where we’re seeing the biggest increases,” he told The Times. “That’s why we’re seeing their share of murders and other violent crimes increased.”

 

Mr. Lott’s findings could explain one of the quirks in public polling in the run-up to the midterm congressional elections last year.

 

Surveys showed that voters placed violent crime high on their lists of concerns, though the same surveys often found that respondents didn’t fear for their own safety.

 

Criminologists have long identified higher crime rates in urban areas, but they say the matter is more complicated than mere population.

 

Some analysts point to blighted neighborhoods, high levels of truancy and other measures of social disunity as factors. Others point to lower arrest rates.

 

The year 2020 was striking for its increase in homicides and for some other pressure points, including the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, which sparked waves of unrest and attempts to curtail policing.

 

The mayhem continued into 2021, when some major cities reported record-high homicide counts.

 

The latest data suggests that homicide rates cooled off in 2022, though violent crime may still have ticked up.

 

Mr. Lott pointed to an inverse correlation in his study between counties with high homicide totals and gun ownership.

 

He said he doesn’t put too much weight on that point but added that it does serve as a challenge to the kinds of solutions Democrats are eyeing.

 

“President Biden and Democrats want to talk about violent crime as a gun problem. Over 92% of violent crime has nothing to do with guns,” Mr. Lott said. “The way you reduce violent crime or gun crime is the same way: You have to make it risky to go and commit the crime.”

COVID-19 has transformed healthcare service provision. In addition to the spread of a virus, there has been an equally concerning emergence and spread of conspiracy theories. Such theories can threaten societal cohesion and adherence to the necessary public health guidance. In a forensic in-patient setting, such difficulties can be amplified. In this paper, we outline the key theory in relation to the development and spread of conspiracy theory memes. We propose primary, secondary and tertiary level responses to tackle the possible generation and spread of harmful conspiracies in the forensic in-patient setting. We consider this to be important, as there is a risk that such beliefs could affect patients' mental health and, in extremis, undermine physical health efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

After a Corona outbreak with three deaths in a Hildesheim nursing home, a former home employee will be on trial from February. The main trial against the 45-year-old begins on 21. February, the district court Hildesheim announced on Wednesday. Her negligent killing in one case is accused of being in a unit with negligent assault in two cases and falsifying documents. The 45-year-old is said to have faked a double vaccination against the coronavirus by presenting a fake vaccination card. Four continuation dates are planned in the process.

 

At the end of November 2021, despite the Corona infection of her son, the woman was initially allowed to continue working in the home. Her employer had allowed this because he assumed that she had been vaccinated twice. She is said to have been infected with the coronavirus herself unnoticed and initially infected a colleague during a coffee break. This is how an “infection chain started” is said to have been. When the home broke out, three residents aged 80, 85 and 93 died.

 

According to the indictment, the forensic examinations showed that the corona infection was the cause of death in the case of the 80-year-old. Other causes cannot be ruled out for the other two victims, in which cases the 45-year-old is charged with negligent assault, said a spokesman. The woman admitted falsifying the vaccination card, but denied being responsible for the Corona outbreak.

 

Overall, three further infections among nursing and cleaning staff and eleven infections among residents occurred in the home according to the charges. Because the 45-year-old was known to her employer as the opponent of the vaccine, the latter obtained information about the vaccination date and the batch numbers. According to the prosecutor's office, this meant that it had to be a forgery.

Bank of America customers outraged at money missing from their accounts

 

NEW YORK (PIX11) — Some Bank of America customers are concerned after seeing money missing from their accounts Wednesday morning, according to social media posts.

“Saw Bank of America was trending and turns out my account was impacted so happy Wednesday everyone,” Keira Renee said in a tweet.

“I am at the point of a collapse. where is my money?” another customer tweeted.

Customers are complaining about money missing from deposits and Zelle transactions. Many said they called the bank’s customer service and have not had any luck getting any information.

A message in the Bank of America app said Zelle transactions from Saturday through Tuesday were delayed. The alert said the accounts would be updated as soon as possible, but did not specify when.

“We apologize for any delay or inconvenience,” the bank message said.

PIX11 reached out to Bank of America for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

Ukraine's president Zelensky addresses Davos forum after fatal helicopter crash

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has said there "are no accidents at war time" after 14 people died in a helicopter crash in the capital, Kyiv.

Ukraine did not claim Russian involvement, but Mr Zelensky told the World Economic Forum in Davos the tragedy was a consequence of the war.

Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky, 42, died alongside his first deputy minister and state secretary.

The helicopter crashed near a nursery around 08:30 local time (06:30 GMT).

One of the fourteen people killed was a child, authorities said.

There is no indication the crash was anything other than an accident.

But the SBU state security service said it was following several possible causes for the crash, which included sabotage as well as a technical malfunction or breach of flight rules.

Key officials are often flown by helicopter across Ukraine at tree-level to avoid detection, but that comes with risks.

The State Emergency Service first stated that up to 18 people were killed but later revised the death toll from the crash, saying 14 had died.

All that was recognisable of the helicopter was a door panel and one of its rotors which landed on the roof of a car. Next to it were three bodies covered in foil blankets.

Mr Monastyrsky, who was one of President Zelensky's longest serving political advisers, is the highest profile Ukrainian casualty since the war began.

His death cuts to the heart of the government in Kyiv as the interior ministry has the vital task of maintaining security and running the police during the war.

He was a recognisable face for Ukrainians throughout the war, updating the public on casualties caused by Russian missile strikes since Ukraine was invaded in February 2022.

The deputy head of Ukraine's presidential office, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, said the minister had been in the helicopter to travel to a war "hot spot".

The head of police in the north-eastern city of Kharkiv, Volodymyr Tymoshko, said the ministerial team were on their way to meet him there and he had spoken to them only yesterday.

Following Mr Monastyrsky's death, Ihor Klymenko - the head of Ukraine's national police force - has been appointed acting interior minister.

Mr Tymoshenko said the interior ministry's work would not be affected by the loss of its leaders, but government colleagues were visibly shocked as they reacted on national TV.

A friend of the late minister, MP Mariia Mezentseva, said it was a tragedy for everyone as the ministry had a significant role in Ukraine's response to the invasion.

"He responded 24/7 to his colleagues, friends and family. He was very close to President Zelensky from day one of his presidential campaign," she told the BBC.

Other officials who died in the crash included Tetiana Shutiak, an aide to Mr Monastyrsky, first deputy minister Yevhen Yenin and state secretary Yuriy Lubkovych, whose task was to organise the work of the ministry.

Before he moved to the interior ministry, Mr Yenin helped represent Ukraine's government abroad.

US President Joe Biden expressed his condolences to all victims of the crash.

Parents were bringing their children to the kindergarten before going to work when the helicopter came down.

"The pain is unspeakable," President Zelensky said. "The helicopter fell on the territory of one of the kindergartens."

NASA Wants You to Help Study Planets Around Other Stars

The Exoplanet Watch project invites you to use your smartphone or personal telescope to help track worlds outside our solar system.

 

More than 5,000 planets have been confirmed to exist outside our solar system, featuring a wide array of characteristics like clouds made of glass and twin suns. Scientists estimate there could be millions more exoplanets in our home galaxy alone, which means professional astronomers could use your help tracking and studying them.

 

This is where Exoplanet Watch comes in. Participants in the program can use their own telescopes to detect planets outside our solar system, or they can look for exoplanets in data from other telescopes using a computer or smartphone.

 

Exoplanet Watch began in 2018 under NASA’s Universe of Learning, one of the agency’s Science Activation programs that enables anyone to experience how science is done and discover the universe for themselves. Until recently there were limits on how many people could help look through the data collected by other telescopes, but now this program is easily available to anyone. By following the site’s instructions, participants can download data to their device or access it via the cloud, and then assess it using a custom data analysis tool.

 

“With Exoplanet Watch you can learn how to observe exoplanets and do data analysis using software that actual NASA scientists use,” said Rob Zellem, the creator of Exoplanet Watch and an astrophysicist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. “We’re excited to show more people how exoplanet science is really done.”

 

Helping Without a Telescope

Participants without telescopes can help astronomers comb through data that’s already been taken. The project has 10 years of exoplanet observations, collected by a small ground-based telescope south of Tucson, Arizona. This year, the project will start collecting additional data from two other telescopes at the Table Mountain facility in Southern California, which JPL manages.

 

These telescopes look at nearby stars and search for what scientists call exoplanet transits: regular dips in a star’s brightness caused by a planet passing between the star and Earth. Essentially, a transit is an observation of a planet’s silhouette against the bright glare of its star.

 

Multiple NASA telescopes look for exoplanet transits as a way to discover new planets, but Exoplanet Watch participants primarily observe transits by planets that have already been discovered to gain more information about their orbits. The time between exoplanet transits reveals how long it takes an exoplanet to orbit its parent star; the more transits that are measured, the more precisely the length of the orbit is known. If the timing of the orbit isn’t measured precisely, scientists who want to study those planets in more detail with large ground-based or space-based telescopes can lose valuable observing time while they wait for the planet to appear. Having volunteers sort through the data will save significant computing and processing time.

Helping With Your Own Telescope

Want to take your own data? Although the number of targets you can see increases with the size of the telescope used, there’s no minimum size requirement. For example, Exoplanet Watch can help you detect exoplanet transits for hundreds of nearby stars with just a 6-inch (15-centimeter) telescope.

 

Exoplanet Watch combines observations of the same target by multiple sky watchers in order to get a higher-fidelity measurement. Combining observations is also useful if the planet’s transit lasts longer than the time a star is visible in the sky for a single observer: Multiple participants at different locations around the globe can collectively watch the duration of a long transit.

 

That was the case with a planet called HD 80606 b, which Webb will observe this year. A recent study of this planet led by Kyle Pearson, the Exoplanet Watch deputy science lead at JPL, combined observations from more than 20 Exoplanet Watch participants.

 

The volunteer effort on HD 80606 b will free up almost two hours of time on Webb for other observations. And on missions that aim to observe hundreds or thousands of exoplanets, the number of minutes saved by refining planet transit measurements can add up and free a significant amount of observing time, according to Zellem.

 

One of the program’s policies requires that the first paper to make use of the observations or analysis done by volunteers will list those volunteers as co-authors, which was the case with the study led by Pearson. “I hope this program lowers barriers to science for a lot of people and inspires the next generation of astronomers to join our field,” said Zellem.

[ATLANTA – Jan. 18, 2023] Project Veritas released a second video today exposing Teaching Lab’s questionable activities and objectives.

 

Dr. Quintin Bostic, who works there as a Content Manager, revealed he struggles with his organization’s business practices. He even referred to it as a “scam lab.”

Ambassador Michael Carpenter was nominated by President Biden to serve as the Permanent Representative of the United States of America to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and was confirmed by the United States Senate on November 3, 2021, by unanimous consent.

 

Prior to assuming his current position, Dr. Carpenter was the Managing Director of the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement at the University of Pennsylvania. From 2015-17, Dr. Carpenter served in the Pentagon as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine, Eurasia, and Conventional Arms Control. Previously, he worked in the White House as a foreign policy advisor to then-Vice President Biden and as Director for Russia at the National Security Council. Prior to his White House jobs, Carpenter was a career Foreign Service Officer with the State Department, where his roles included Deputy Director of the Office of Russian Affairs, Special Assistant to the Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Political-Military Officer, and Advisor on Caucasus Affairs and Regional Conflicts. He served overseas in the U.S. Embassies in Poland, Slovenia, and Barbados.
