ISIS-inspired terrorist who killed eight people with truck in NYC is convicted - and could face first death penalty in New York since 1963

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11681475/ISIS-inspired-terrorist-killed-eight-people-NYC-bike-path-2017-convicted-counts.html

  • Sayfullo Saipov bowed head as he heard the verdict in a Manhattan courtroom

  • He killed eight people with a speeding truck in a 2017 rampage in NYC

  • Prosecutors said the rampage was inspired by his reverence for ISIS

An Islamic extremist who killed eight people with a speeding truck in a 2017 rampage on a popular New York City bike path was convicted Thursday of federal crimes and could face the death penalty.

Sayfullo Saipov bowed his head as he heard the verdict in a Manhattan courtroom just a few blocks from where the attack ended.

Prosecutors said the Halloween rampage was inspired by his reverence for the Islamic State militant group.

The dozen jurors deliberated for about seven hours over two days before convicting Saipov, 34, of 28 counts of crimes that include murder in aid of racketeering and supporting a foreign terrorist organization.

urors will return to court no earlier than February 6 to hear more evidence to help them decide whether he should be executed or spend the rest of his life in prison.

A death sentence for Saipov, a citizen of Uzbekistan, would be an extreme rarity in New York. The state no longer has capital punishment and the last state execution was in 1963.

A federal jury in New York has not rendered a death sentence that withstood legal appeals in decades, with the last execution in 1954.

Even before the trial, there was no doubt Saipov was a killer.

His lawyers conceded to the jury that he rented a pickup truck near his New Jersey home, steered it onto the path along the Hudson River, and mowed down bicyclists for blocks before crashing into a school bus near the World Trade Center.

He emerged from his truck yelling 'God is great,' in Arabic, with pellet and paintball guns in his hands before he was shot by a police officer who thought they were real firearms.

The vehicle attack killed a woman visiting from Belgium with her family, five friends from Argentina, and two Americans. It left others with permanent injuries, including a woman who lost her legs.

'His actions were senseless, horrific, and thereยดs no justification for them,' defense attorney David Patton told the jury during the trial.

The defense asked jurors to acquit Saipov of racketeering charges, saying he intended to die a martyr and was not conspiring with the Islamic State organization, despite voluminous amounts of propaganda from the group found on his electronic devices and at his home.

Saipov did not testify at his trial.

He sat quietly each day, unlike at a 2019 pretrial hearing where he insisted on questioning the judge about why he should be judged for eight deaths when 'thousands and thousands of Muslims are dying all over the world.'

Saipov moved legally to the U.S. from Uzbekistan in 2010 and lived in Ohio and Florida before joining his family in Paterson, New Jersey.

Prosecutors said Saipov attacked civilians to impress the Islamic State group so he could become a member and appeared pleased with his work, smiling when he spoke to an FBI agent afterward.

Among those testifying were several family members from Belgium who were injured in the attack. Aristide Melissas, a father, said he had challenged family members to race their bikes to the World Trade Center, with the loser paying for ice cream. When he was struck by Saipovยดs truck, his skull was fractured. He underwent brain surgery.

His wife, Marion Van Reeth, spoke of waking up in a hospital to learn her legs had been amputated.

>Saipovยดs lawyers have said the death penalty process was irreparably tainted by former President Donald Trump, who tweeted a day after the attack that Saipov 'SHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY!'

President Joe Biden subsequently instituted a moratorium on executions for federal crimes.

Until Saipov's trial, Biden's Justice Department, under Attorney General Merrick Garland, had not launched any new attempt to obtain the death penalty in a federal case. But Garland has allowed U.S. prosecutors to continue advocating for capital punishment in cases inherited from previous administrations.

It has been a decade since a jury in New York last considered the death penalty.

Federal juries in Brooklyn twice gave a death sentence to a man who murdered two New York police detectives, once in 2007 and again in 2013, but both sentences were tossed out on appeal. A judge ultimately ruled the killer was intellectually disabled.

Busted Pfizer R&D Exec Claims He Lied About "Mutating COVID" To "Impress A Date Like Normal People"

Update (1750ET): Project Veritas' James O'Keefe was physically assaulted after approaching Jordon Trishton Walker, Pfizer's Director of R&D, Strategic Operations, who had been caught on tape admitting to the fact that the company is exploring a way to "mutate" COVID via "Directed Evolution" in order to anticipate new strains for their Covid-19 vaccine.

When O'Keefe first approached him about his admission, Walker erupted in denial, exclaiming that "I was just lying to a person to impress them on a date." He then lunged for O'Keefe and his staff in what appeared to be an effort to take away the iPad that O'Keefe was holding.

The situation escalated when Walker urged the restaurant owner to call the police, but the restaurant owner asked O'Keefe to leaveโ€ฆ which left Walker pressuring him to stay until the police arrived.

As Walker raged around the empty restaurant, he once again claimed: "I was on a third date with a man and like normal people you lie to impress a dateโ€ฆ"

Kanye West wore a German armed forces t-shirt as he went shopping with new wife Bianca Censori at under-fire Balenciaga in LA on Wednesday.

The disgraced rapper, 45, who saw his career and net worth go in free-fall after a series of anti-Semitic remarks, wore a T-shirt emblazoned with a vintage logo of the Bundeswehr - the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The logo was previously used for the German military in the post Second Word War era - following the Holocaust in which six million Jewish people were murdered by the Nazi party, under the direction of Adolf Hitler.

To Trump: Your Support for Gay Propaganda Will Not Make America Great Again

Corrupting children and undermining the family, as the LGBTQ movement does, only weakens a country, Mr. President.

byGeorge NeumayrDecember 21, 2022, 10:02 PM Part I

Donald Trump is usually a repository of common sense. But on matters related to โ€œgay rights,โ€ he is hopelessly unmoored from common sense. Trumpโ€™s support for that appalling movement, which is so destructive to the country, at a recent Log Cabin Republicansโ€™ gala held at his Mar-a-Lago estate iscompletely indefensible.

The gross propaganda to which Trump offered inane homage strikes at the roots of a countryโ€™s strength, namely, the first form of government โ€” the two-parent family that God placed at the center of his plan for humanity. God, not man, is the measure of morality, and he expressed clearly in the design of the human body and the difference between men and women that โ€œgay rightsโ€ are a lying fiction that corrupts children and weakens a nation. Has Trump not been paying attention for the last five decades? The โ€œgay rightsโ€ movement has been a disaster for the traditional family and children, exposing many of them to the implicit child abuse of โ€œgay adoptionโ€ and increasingly hubristic โ€œIVFโ€ experiments. The โ€œgay rightsโ€ movement has not made America great again. Rather, it has made America weak and depraved and has led to the abomination of transgenderism. Trump needs to think more and talk less and crack open the philosophical works of Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, who recognized the depravity of homosexuality and its baneful influence on the common good. A โ€œconservatismโ€ that fails to see the centrality of the traditional family to the common good and fosters respect for a lifestyle that is utterly destructive of the family and the moral health of children isworthless.

Pull your head out of your ass, Mr. Trump, and defend the natural moral law, which is essential to the strength and longevity of a country. The Log Cabin Republicans are just a bunch ofdegenerates with fat wallets.Do you really need their money this badly, Mr. President?Your greed is pathetic. And I say this as someone who voted for you twice and sees you as an immensely amusing and, at times, admirable American original. Hell, I will probably vote for you again and may even vote for you against Ron DeSantis, should he choose to run. As a friend of mine put it to me, โ€œDeSantis is not an upgrade on Trump on gay issues.โ€ In other words, DeSantis is just as unsound on those issues as Trump. In fact, DeSantis began his run for governor by pooh-poohing the โ€œbathroom wars.โ€ Social conservatives, recall, supported his primary opponent. After he squeaked out his gubernatorial victory, he suddenly saw the value of the bathroom wars. But his opposition to the LGBTQ movement is restricted to the โ€œTโ€ in that tiresome acronym, and even on the issue of transgenderism his disdain only applies to its imposition on children, not adults. Yet even DeSantis, who is a mediocre retail politician at best, has the sense to keep his distance from frivolous Republicans who want to turn the GOP into the Gay Old Party. Trump has heedlessly seconded this movement, and, if it succeeds in dominating the party, America will be subject to two equally immoral parties spewing nonsense about sexuality and, thereby, creating a culture that renders any national greatness impossible.

No doubt the philosophically shallow Trumpwould scoff at this view and counsel me that I am too uptight. But that is simply not true: Opposition to the LGBTQ movement is not idle and pompous morality but an essential defense of Judeo-Christian civilization and the preservation of religious liberty. An LGBTQ America is a godless America in which Christians are treated as the worst, not the best, citizens in the country. Look back on the last days of the decadent Roman Empire, and you can see the civilizational oblivion where that perverse, upside-down culture leads. https://spectator.org/to-trump-your-support-for-gay-propaganda-will-not-make-america-great-again/

By the way, I have been pretty hard on Ronna McDaniel, hoping that she will lose the race for Republican National Committee chair. Perhaps that was a waste of my time. I have heard that her challenger, Harmeet Dhillon, a San Franciscoโ€“based attorney, is lousy on gay issues too. According to a GOP source, she is not as reckless as McDaniel โ€” Dhillon probably wouldnโ€™t, like McDaniel, send out โ€œGay Pride Monthโ€ tweets โ€” but, philosophically, she is basically in the same camp as McDaniel on gay issues. So does it really matter if she wins? Maybe, maybe not. On balance, she is better on issues across the board than McDaniel. But to anybody hoping for a revived GOP willing to stand up to the Democratic culture of death and depravity,Trumpโ€™s hosting of the Log Cabin Republicans is depressing as hell.Kari Lake was also there, goofing off with outrรฉ rhetoric and naughty asides. How stupid, how shameful. Lake is a polished and talented politician, but if she canโ€™t see that gay propaganda threatens the future of the country, she is not much of a conservative and, in the end,not even worth supporting. The last thing America needs are two parties echoing each other on woke nonsense about the gloriousness of a movement that has clearly been a civilizational cataclysm for America.

President Trump, you toppled Roe v. Wade and defended religious freedom during your term and did so in the face of intense persecution from the media and ruling class. Donโ€™t throw that noble legacy away for the Log Cabin Republicansโ€™ mess of pottage.

Abp. Viganรฒ: Trumpโ€™s LGBT gala shows Deep State has โ€˜contaminated the entire political eliteโ€™

The Republican Party is recklessly pursuing a minority of voters who are indulging in lifestyles that are contrary to the Commandments and to the common good.

Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganรฒ

Tue Dec 20, 2022 - 10:01 pm EST

(LifeSiteNews) โ€” A large scandal has been created, as well as discouragement, upon learning the news of the gala event hosted by President Donald J. Trump for openly homosexual supporters of the Republican Party.

This endorsement of LGBT ideology is even more serious if one considers that, only two days previously, Joe Biden signed the โ€œRespect for Marriage Actโ€ which recognizes the legal validity of so-called homosexual marriages in the United States, in violation of the Natural Law and also the Law of God.

The Democratic Party is totally anti-Christian and obstinately determined to implement the globalist agenda of the New World Order.

On the other hand, the Republican Party is recklessly pursuing a minority of voters who are indulging in lifestyles that are contrary to the Commandments and to the common good.

American Catholics find themselves today in the impossible situation of being represented by a political class that is revealing itself to be completely incapable of representing and expressing Catholic convictions in moral and religious matters.

This causes voters to become disaffected, which is added to electoral fraud and scandals that are emerging about media censorship and the manipulation of electoral consensus.

Up until now, certain aspects of the political platform of the Republican Party were able to be overlooked to some extent due to the much more serious threat embodied by the Democratic Party.

But it is now evident that the action of the deep state has contaminated the entire political elite without distinction, even involving Donald Trump, who up until now seemed to be a source of hope for the future of the United States.

A nation that offends the Law of God cannot hope to be blessed by the Lord, and those who support sinful lifestyles ought to think of the Judgment that awaits them rather than pleasing those who are corrupt in a calculated effort to win votes.

This nonchalance in political action by Republicans is no less harmful than the open opposition to the perennial Magisterium of the Church on the part of Democrats.

I urge American Catholics to pray, asking the Lord to enlighten politicians of sound principles, urging them to fight with courageous commitment for the defense of the Natural Law and the Commandments of God.

Financier who fatally plunged from rooftop bar was dad of 3 who recently filed for divorce

The man who plunged to his death from a Manhattan rooftop bar has been identified as Dale L. Cheney โ€“ a dad-of-three financier who launched his own Connecticut-based investment firm.

January 26, 2023

The financier who plunged to his death from a Manhattan rooftop bar was identified Thursday as a Connecticut dad of three who filed for divorce from his wife one day before he died, according to police sources and court records.

Dale L. Cheney 46, plummeted from Bar 54 at the Hyatt Centric Times Square New York on West 45th Street near Seventh Avenue, in front of at least two witnesses around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, authorities and the sources said.

He landed on the street below and was pronounced dead, cops said.

The death is being investigated as a suspected suicide, an NYPD spokesperson said.

Cheneyโ€™s death came one day after he filed for divorce from his wife, Lauren Cheney, Connecticut court records show.

Law enforcement sources told The Post that police were called to his former Upper East Side home twice in 2008 over domestic disputes with his wife. One of the arguments was over finances.

Cheney founded T-street Capital in 2013 in Darien, Connecticut, about 40 miles northeast of Manhattan, according to public records.

'''Timestamp 13:00 After Taylor Marshall reads Carlo Maria Vigano' letter, putting down POTUS, Taylor Marshall paraphrases from Romans Chapter 1.'''

"It (Romans Chapter 1) condemns Men with Men and Women with Women AND It says that they are WORTHY OF DEATH."

"And not only them, I know these are hard words but, THOSE WHO APPROVE OF IT"

THOSE WHO APPROVE OF IT (POTUS) IS WORTHY OF DEATH

Taylor is suggesting that, The Bible, Romans Chapter 1, means that ANYONE including POTUS, who is either Gay or Approving of the Gay Lifestyle are WORTHY OF DEATH.

WORTHY OF DEATH

Taylor also states clearly that, if he ran for President and if he won, he would not accept and that the only thing he would accept would be a Catholic Monarchy ruling The U.S.

More information

Cheney was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, the son of Marjorie Lorraine (nรฉe Dickey) and Richard Herbert Cheney. He is of predominantly English and Welsh ancestry; Cheney's 8th great-grandfather, William Cheney immigrated from England to Massachusetts in the 17th century. Although not a direct descendant, he is collaterally related to Benjamin Pierce Cheney (1815โ€“1895), the early American expressman. Cheney is a distant cousin of both Harry S. Truman and Barack Obama; the three share a common ancestor in Mareen Duvall, a Huguenot who fled from France to England in the 17th century and later settled in Maryland. His father was a soil conservation agent for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and his mother was a softball star in the 1930s; Cheney was one of three children.

He attended Calvert Elementary School before his family moved to Casper, Wyoming, where he attended Natrona County High School.

Cheneyโ€™s Family History

Lynne Cheney grew up in Wyoming and married her high-school sweetheart. When she recently started to look into family history, she found a lot she didnโ€™t know.

Written by Leslie Milk

| Published on October 1, 2007

โ€œItโ€™s a privilege to live in Washington if youโ€™re interested in family history,โ€ says Lynne Cheney, wife of Vice President Dick Cheney. When she decided to trace her family background for her new book, Blue Skies, No Fences: A Memoir of Childhood and Family, she found unexpected treasures in the National Archives, the Maryland State Archives, and the library of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Lynne Cheneyโ€™s forebear Nicholas Leyberger arrived in Philadelphia from Germany in 1739, and she was able to find material about him in the DAR library. It has nearly 30,000 family histories as well as church records and letters.

Cheney says what she found helped her โ€œflesh out the storiesโ€ of her familyโ€™s early years. A Leyberger grandson, also named Nicholas, testified about his Revolutionary War experiences to prove he was a veteran. โ€œSeeing your ancestorโ€™s words is a remarkable experience,โ€ she says.

But it was more recent family history that sparked Cheneyโ€™s interest in her roots. When she was growing up in Casper, Wyoming, her maternal aunts shared โ€œbits and piecesโ€ of family loreโ€”including that her grandparents had lived in a cave and the family moved from there into a tent in the oil fields.

The โ€œcave,โ€ a shelter dug out of the side of a hill, was temporary. The tent was home long enough to get a nicknameโ€”Lybyer Mansion. (Nicholas Leybergerโ€™s great-grandson Daniel had shortened the family name to Lybyer.) The โ€œmansionโ€ had two rooms and housed the family of six plus a dog and Lynne Cheneyโ€™s great-uncle Clyde.

โ€œIt struck me as so exotic,โ€ Cheney says. โ€œAs an adult, I more fully appreciate the hardships this life meant.โ€

Her fatherโ€™s family, the Vincents, were descendants of Mormons who had traveled from Wales to the New World and settled in Utah. Cheneyโ€™s father wanted no part of the church or ancestors who lived by its precepts, so there were few childhood tales about her paternal history. But the Lybyers had rich stories.

Cheney knew that her grandfather Ben Lybyer had grown up on a farm in Missouri as one of 18 children. He ran away from home at age 13 and eventually got to Wyoming. He and several of his brothers, who later joined him there, talked about their escape from the backbreaking labor their father demanded.

At the National Archives, she found her great-grandfather Andrew Lybyerโ€™s Civil War enlistment papers. โ€œThey told me what he looked like and that he was โ€˜entirely soberโ€™ when he enlisted,โ€ Cheney says. The archives also held Lybyerโ€™s Civil War pension records.

As a private in the Union Armyโ€™s Sixth Indiana Cavalry, Lybyer was sent to defend Knoxville, Tennessee, then under siege by Confederate forces. His company was driven into the mountains, โ€œwhere they had to survive in freezing weather without tents, blankets, or rations,โ€ Cheney writes in her book. Her great-grandfather got very sick and, according to his pension file, never fully recovered. โ€œHe probably worked his sons so hard because he couldnโ€™t do it himself,โ€ Cheney says.

While researching, Cheney learned that the National Building Museum was originally the Pension Building, housing the federal agency that handled Civil War pensions.

In the early 1880s, Cheneyโ€™s great-grandfather moved west to Missouri to take advantage of the Homestead Act, which gave citizens the right to claim 160-acre plots of public land. In the National Archives, Cheney found the homestead file describing the land and the farmhouse where her grandfather was born.

Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein has made the archives much more user-friendly for genealogy researchers, according to Cheney. Many of its documents are now available on the Internet.

>Cheneyโ€™s Family History

The Maryland State Archives in Annapolis proved to be a trove of information about the Vice Presidentโ€™s family. The Cheney family knew that William Cheney was among the Puritans who had come to America in 1640 and settled in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Nine generations later, Dick Cheneyโ€™s grandparents, Thomas Cheney and Margaret Tyler, married in Nebraska. In 1915, they had a son they named Richard.

Margaret Tyler was a serious student of genealogy. Lynne Cheney writes: โ€œItโ€™s possible that she knew the surprising fact that her son was descended from Cheneys not only on her husbandโ€™s side but on hers as well.โ€

It was Tylerโ€™s ancestor Richard Cheney who had come to Maryland before 1660 and received a land grant from Lord Baltimore. There are still places in Maryland that bear his name: Cheneyโ€™s Hill, Cheneyโ€™s Resolution, and Cheneyโ€™s Purchase. State archivist Edward Papenfuse helped Lynne Cheney locate the original grant, recorded in beautiful handwriting in a book kept by Lord Baltimore himself in the Maryland archives.

She also found that Richard had daughters named Elizabeth and Mary. The archive has Elizabethโ€™s testimony in a legal proceeding about her fatherโ€™s estate.

Coincidentally, Vice President Richard Cheneyโ€™s daughters are named Elizabeth and Mary. The Cheneys now spend a lot of time at their home on Marylandโ€™s Eastern Shore.

Genealogy is โ€œhistory from the bottom up,โ€ Cheney says. Her research helped put larger issues into perspective: โ€œI never understood William Jennings Bryanโ€™s โ€˜cross of goldโ€™ speech until I read about one of Dickโ€™s ancestors.โ€

Civil War veteran Samuel Cheneyโ€™s farm suffered from a devastating drought in 1890. He needed a loan to finance a new crop, but banks werenโ€™t lending. The gold standard made it hard for small farmers to borrow money, Cheney writes: โ€œWhen Bryan brought the crowd at the 1896 Chicago convention to its feet by declaring, โ€˜You shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold,โ€™ he had in mind farmers like Samuel.โ€

She didnโ€™t find any famous ancestors in researching Blue Skies, No Fences. What she found was a greater understanding of the people who had come beforeโ€”who shared the idea not just of getting by but of making life better for their children.

โ€œMy mother grew up in the oil fields,โ€ Cheney says, โ€œbut she was determined that there would be no limits on my aspirations or my brothersโ€™.โ€

For the first time in nearly seven years, the House on Thursday brought legislation to the floor under a "modified-open rule" โ€“ a change that leads to more open debate on the floor, its supporters say, though others say it removes restrictions intended to efficiently move proposals through Congress.

Republicans put an energy bill on the floor Thursday evening with a process that, prior to the vote, allowed any member to submit amendments in the Congressional Record.

It's the first time such amendments have been allowed since May 2016 โ€“ and the first time since 2013 with non-spending related legislation.

The rule change was negotiated during Kevin McCarthy's fight for the speakership when his detractors asked for more open debate on bills.

"This is what we promised the American public. This is what we promised members on both sides: that there will be more openness, more opportunity for ideas to win at the end of the day," McCarthy told reporters earlier this week.

Some Republicans were critical of the use of "closed" or "structured" special rules under Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi's leadership in the chamber. Those processes limit amendments for consideration or eliminate them from being brought to the floor altogether.

Experts have noted how supporters of those rules say it makes the chamber run more efficiently by limiting how a bill can be revised and debated by the full chamber.

A Pelosi source also said that the closed and structured rules gave her control of the floor process, which she preferred.

The new process requires that any member who submitted their amendment in time to the Congressional Record also be able to speak on the floor. That could include members of the Democratic minority, who could use amendment proposals to spotlight attacks on legislation and create procedural hurdles.

For the energy bill taken up Thursday, 143 amendments were submitted โ€“ but not all of the amendments will receive a vote. The House was expected to continue debating the proposed amendments into the night and vote Friday.

Marine Corps Reactivates Base on Guam

Jan. 26, 2023

ASAN BEACH, GUAM โ€“ The U.S. Marine Corps reactivated a new base on Guam in a ceremony, Jan. 26, honoring the long-shared history of the Marine Corps and Guam and establishing a forward presence in the Indo-Pacific that will endure into the future.

Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Blaz is the first newly constructed Marine Corps base in 70 years and serves as a testament to the U.S.-Japan alliance. Guam was chosen as the location for the new base during the 2012 Bilateral Agreement between the U.S and Japanese governments, under the Defense Policy Review Initiative, which set the framework for the relocation of Marines from Okinawa to Guam. The base is named in honor of Brigadier General Vicente Tomas โ€œBenโ€ Garrido Blaz, the first CHamorro Marine to attain the rank of general officer.

โ€œToday is an important day that marks the future of the Marines on Guam, and it is also a day to reflect on the century-long history of the Marine Corps in this beautiful place we call home,โ€ said Col. Christopher Bopp, Commanding Officer, MCB Camp Blaz. โ€œOn this island Marines and their CHamoru brethren have lived in peace and fought in war together and we are proud to carry on this legacy of honor and courage.โ€

Guamโ€™s history is marked by the enduring partnership between the U.S. military and the people of Guam. Since the establishment of Marine Barracks Guam in 1899, the Marine Corps has had a nearly continuous presence on Guam. The Marine Barracks was reactivated after World War II and deactivated November 10, 1992.

During the ceremony at War in the Pacific National Historical Park, honors were rendered to the Honorable Lou Leon Guerrero, Governor of Guam; Commandant of the Marine Corps; U.S. Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environmental; Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defense and Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs provided remarks. The ceremony ended with a traditional pass and review.

โ€œI believe that on the horizon lies the opportunities that Ben (Blaz) wished for our people,โ€ said the Honorable Leon Guerrero. โ€œNo longer are we dealing with challenges and isolation, we are cultivating a more sustainable and comprehensive Indo-Pacific allyship. The future of Guam is inseparable from the future of the broader Indo-Pacific and the success of the Marines is inseparable from the success of Guamโ€™s people. Together we are an island and an ocean united; together we are always better and always stronger; together we are always faithful. Semper Fidelis.โ€

Situated on Guamโ€™s northern plateau, Camp Blaz will serve as a strategic hub as the Department of Defense realizes the vision of the 2022 National Defense Strategy. The base construction projects currently underway are partially funded by a large monetary contribution from the Government of Japan.

โ€œForward, persistent presence is key to the regional security and stability in the Indo-Pacific. Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz is a critical part of that. More than that, it shows our undivided relationship with the Government of Japan,โ€ said the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. David H. Berger.

Camp Blaz represents a significant milestone for the future of both the Marine Corps and Guam. The baseโ€™s forward presence and engagement in the Pacific will play an essential role in strengthening the ability of the U.S. and its allies and partners for a collective defense and to promote regional security.

โ€œThe Japan and U.S. alliance is the cornerstone of the people, the peace and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region and the linchpin of Japanโ€™s foreign policy,โ€ said Ms. Yoshikawa Yuumi, Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs.

The Marine Corps is committed to upholding the legacy of Brig. Gen. Blazโ€™s, prioritizing environmental and cultural stewardship, and building on the established relationships with the people of Guam remains integral in all aspects of development of this installation.

โ€œIt is right here, today, that we come together to demonstrate the power of partnership and the importance of community,โ€ said the Honorable Mrs. Meredith Berger, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment.

US military operation kills top ISIS leader, 10 additional terrorists in Somalia

Jan 26, 2023

The US terminated Bilal al-Sudan, a senior ISIS leader residing in Somalia, along with 10 additional members of the terrorist group in a counterterrorism mission that found zero American military casualties across the operation.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement on Thursday, "On January 25, on orders from the President, the US military conducted an assault operation in northern Somalia that resulted in the death of a number of ISIS members, including Bilal-al-Sudani, an ISIS leader in Somalia and a key facilitator for ISISโ€™s global network, according to CNN.

According to Fox News, Military officials said on Thursday the operation took "extraordinary coordination and careful planning across all elements of the US government for many months"

The military officials told Fox that al-Sudani was using Africa as a base to expand ISIS' global network. He was funding operations and was focusing on expansion in Africa and Afghanistan.

Austin said, "This action leaves the United States and its partners safer and more secure, and it reflects our steadfast commitment to protecting Americans from the threat of terrorism at home and abroad."

US Africa Command said, "Protecting civilians remains a vital part of the commandโ€™s operations to promote greater security for all Africans."

Joe Biden authorized the mission after planning reached a "critical stage" last week and after the recommendations of Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley.

One official told Fox that the mission was originally intended as a capture and said, "An intended capture operation was ultimately determined to be the best option to maximize the intelligence value of the operation and increase its precision in challenging terrain."

"At the same time, and based on extensive past experience, we recognize that even an intended capture operation might well result in al-Sudaniโ€™s death โ€” as it ultimately did," the official added.

Reconcile.

What would happen if multiple foreign heads of state were given the proof that Biden did not in fact win the US Presidency?

Why would they not have the proof before?

If they were to find out, would the financial/economical situation put them in a different political posture?

How would Biden act if, given that his peers across the globe, they suddenly realized they were conned into supporting a military operation under false pretenses?

Question for the ages:

Would Putin forgive and forget if they were to immediately cut support and denounce the US Presidency as illegitimate and refuse to do business with the US until the true President is sworn in?

IMF Mulling Fresh $16 Billion Ukraine Aid Package

The International Monetary Fund is now reportedly talking about a fresh multiyear package to help cover Ukraine's budget and for war recovery totaling as much as a whopping $16 billion.

Citing officials privy to IMF deliberations, Bloomberg details that "If approved, the three- to four-year program โ€” worth $14 billion to $16 billion total โ€” will assume a disbursement of $5 billion to $7 billion in the first year.

The plan could be finalized by the end of March, with a first tranche payment released as early as April.

However, the IMF has pointed to a number of conditions which must be met, such as G7 endorsement for the package, and other donors coming forward to vouch for sustaining the country's immense and growing debt.

An official IMF statement only indicated it "remains closely engaged" with Ukraine and said cooperation "could pave the way toward a fully fledged program" - but the fund didn't confirm to Bloomberg the potential size of the loan.

Billions upon billions in international aid has already flooding into Ukraine, some of it for civilian relief and some of it for weapons. The US alone in Ukraine reached nearly $50 billion in 2022 in specifically military aid, with other types of aid going beyond that.

Ironically news of the potential impending IMF mega-package for Ukraine comes the same week the war-ravaged country is back in the news related to a major corruption scandal, resulting in forced resignations and firings of some dozen high-ranking officials.

Kiev of course is attempting to show the world it's finally getting serious about anti-corruption initiatives in order to keep billions from the West flowing in.

Nathaniel Rothschild says sauna with Lord Mandelson was purely pleasure, not business

telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/9036927/Nathaniel-Rothschild-says-sauna-with-Lord-Mandelson-was-purely-pleasure-not-business.html

By Chanel Zagon

Court 14 of the Royal Courts of Justice heard that the former EU trade commissioner enjoyed the invigorating pleasures of a Russian banya steam bath during a 24-hour visit to the remote region in 2005.

Details of the visit were disclosed as Nathaniel Rothschild continued his libel action against the Daily Mail over an article claiming that he arranged Lord Mandelsonโ€™s visit to help smooth a ยฃ500โ€‰million business deal.

Mr Rothschild claims the former Labour ministerโ€™s presence was โ€œpurely recreationalโ€.

Lord Mandelson travelled to the region on Jan 30, 2005 as a guest of Mr Rothschild, scion of the banking dynasty, and Oleg Deripaska, the billionaire owner of Russiaโ€™s biggest aluminium plant. Also present was Peter Munk, a Canadian gold magnate, and Sebastian Taylor, a friend of Mr Rothschild.

During the trip, the men were thrashed with bundles of birch twigs by a 25-year-old male banya keeper before jumping into ice water to improve circulation and cleanse the skin.

Often wearing nothing but a conical felt hat to protect the head from the intense 200F heat, Siberians have bathed in banyas for more than 900 years.

Mr Rothschild said: โ€œThe whole point of the Siberia trip was that we went there, spent a nanosecond at the [aluminium] smelter, we then went to the most delightful banya.

โ€œWe were beaten by a 25-year-old banya keeper man, who has spent his life perfecting the art of banya.

โ€œThen we jumped into ice-cold water. It is the best way in the world to beat jet lag and everything else. It was incredibly enjoyable. Everyone woke up the next day feeling revitalised and excited about the day.โ€

Mr Justice Tugendhat, who is hearing the case without a jury, was told that Lord Mandelson flew to Russia on Mr Rothschildโ€™s private jet after meeting him at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. According to the Daily Mail article, Mr Rothschild acted like a โ€œpuppet-masterโ€, inviting Lord Mandelson along to a dinner in Moscow to โ€œimpressโ€ Mr Deripaska, who was in the process of signing a ยฃ500โ€‰million deal with Americaโ€™s biggest aluminium company, Alcoa.

It was alleged that Lord Mandelsonโ€™s presence was required to assure both parties that EU aluminium import tariffs would not rise in the near future. Mr Rothschild insisted that he only invited Lord Mandelson along because he was a long-standing friend who had expressed an interest in visiting Siberia. The court was told that Lord Mandelson did not attend the dinner at the Cantinetta Antinori restaurant but instead held an informal meeting with a Russian minister in one of the restaurantโ€™s private rooms. Later that evening, the group took Mr Deripaskaโ€™s private jet to Abakan in Siberia, where he has business interests and a vast estate.

Cross-examining Mr Rothschild, Andrew Caldecott QC, for Associated Newspapers, said: โ€œWe say that to take extensive hospitality from Mr Deripaska, who was not a close personal friend of Lord Mandelsonโ€™s before he took office, was inappropriate. To put him in a position of accepting hospitality and taking private jet flights exposed him to allegations of inappropriate behaviour.โ€

Mr Rothschild, 40, replied: โ€œI disagree. It was a wonderful weekend and he enjoyed it.โ€ In his witness statement, he added: โ€œThis invitation was to Lord Mandelson as a personal friend. It never occurred to me that it could constitute any kind of declarable gift or that he might be exposed to allegations of impropriety. I took him on the flight to Moscow as a friend and not for any business reason.โ€

The trial continues.

The Kiev Purge: What has spurred a wave of resignations among senior Ukrainian officials?

Turmoil in the capital and the regions may be a result of the Westโ€™s dissatisfaction with how things are unfolding

On January 23, in the course of his customary evening video address, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky announced major personnel changes in his government. The decision is linked both to his wish to demonstrate anti-corruption measures to the West and a rise in domestic political conflicts.

The resignations affected not only representatives of the Ukrainian elite, such as the Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Kirill Tymoshenko, but also governors of regions near the front line. RT explores what led to the scandal, and the consequences of Ukraine's domestic policy changes in the middle of an armed conflict.

On the way out

The Kiev government has once again been shaken by staffing dramas. On January 24, three high-ranking officials resigned in one day: Deputy Head of the Office of the President Kirill Tymoshenko, Deputy Defense Minister Vyacheslav Shapovalov, and Deputy Prosecutor General Alexey Symonenko.

Four bosses of regional administrations were also dismissed โ€“ in Dnepropetrovsk (Valentin Reznichenko), Zaporozhye (Alexander Starukh), Kherson (Yaroslav Yanushevich) and Sumy (Dmitry Zhivitsky). Itโ€™s worth noting that all these areas are in close proximity to the front and the Russian border, which may indicate that the Ukrainian authorities are preparing for a new stage of hostilities.

According to local media, the list is not limited to the above-mentioned names. Resignations may affect other senior officials, including Prime Minister Denis Shmigal.

The personnel changes were preceded by a series of corruption scandals involving senior officials. This led to a sharp escalation of conflict in Ukraineโ€™s domestic politics and talk of major reform in the leadership of the Office of the President of Ukraine, the government, and certain law enforcement agencies.

Accused of purchasing food supplies for the army at allegedly inflated prices (the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine called these claims manipulative), Deputy Defense Minister Vyacheslav Shapovalov resigned. The situation also threatened the current Minister of Defense Alexei Reznikov, but for now, the profile committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has decided to keep him in office.

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) also conducted raids, detaining Vasiliy Lozinsky, Deputy Minister for the Development of Communities, Territories, and Infrastructure (a protege of Shmigal), while another colleague of Lozinskyโ€™s, Ivan Lukerya, resigned.

Meanwhile, another political scandal resounded across Ukraine. Pavel Khalimon, a deputy from the Presidentโ€™s Servant of the People party was accused of buying an estate worth 10 million Grivna ($273,000) in the center of Kiev during wartime and will be dismissed from his post as the deputy head of the parliamentary faction. The situation was made public by journalists from โ€œUkrainska Pravda.โ€ The outlet, according to experts at the Ukrainian Institute of Politics, is under the patronage of Americans and the team of former president Pyotr Poroshenkoโ€ฆ.

Another scandal centers on former Zelensky adviser Aleksey Arestovich, who has become a popular blogger since the beginning of the armed conflict. Arestovich claimed a missile which fell on a residential building in Dnepropetrovsk (Dnepr), earlier this month, had been shot down by Ukrainian air defense. This caused a major political scandal, and he was fired. The dispute was used to discredit the popular Arestovich and lower his political rating, a favorable turn of events for certain members of Zelensky's team and Ukraineโ€™s political system.

These arenโ€™t the first scandals and corruption accusations that Ukraine has dealt with since Russia's military operation began, but up to now, they have not led to resignations. On the contrary, government opponents and corruption whistleblowers were instead said to โ€œwork for the enemyโ€, sowing confusion among the people in difficult times. Now, the situation has changed dramatically. In his recent address, President Vladimir Zelensky stressed that any evidence of corruption will elicit โ€œa powerful responseโ€.

The front is getting closer

The anti-graft stories are being driven by media outlets connected with Ukraine's Western partners and Poroshenko, who has become Zelensky's main competitor, since the latter had opposition leader Viktor Medvedchuk jailed. For example, on January 23, a number of pro-Western journalists launched a direct attack on Andrey Yermak โ€“ the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine and a key player in the system.

The Bihus.Info project published an investigation into his ties with โ€œpro-Russianโ€ deputies Vadim Stolar and Medvedchuk from the Opposition Bloc - For Life party. Popular Ukrainska Pravda journalist, Mikhail Tkach, appealed to President Vladimir Zelensky to dismiss and punish the politicians.

There are suggestions that Washington and its allies want to limit Zelensky's power. Western media occasionally expresses dissatisfaction with his dominant position in domestic politics, and it follows that, as the Ukrainian outlet โ€˜Strana.uaโ€™ [banned by Zelenksy] claims, limiting Zelensky thus demonstrates that the US and EU intend to retain control over how the multibillion-dollar aid that goes to Ukraine (presently, about 50% of the national budget) is spent. Under such circumstances, the Kiev authorities would be forced to respond to accusations of corruption under pressure from the West.

The US was able to convince the Office of the President of Ukraine to fill the post of the director of NABU, according to the chairman of the Servant of the People party, David Arahamiya. This means that Ukraine could soon establish a power structure independent of the decision-making center.

For his part, Zelensky is trying to ease the pressure from his Western backers by dismissing a number of deputies. However, he likely plans on keeping the main figures in office โ€“ at least the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andrei Yermak and Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov. Any damage to their reputations would seriously weaken the position of the President.

At the same time, Zelensky has already dismissed an important member of his team, Deputy Head of the Office of the President Kirill Timoshenko. Authorities reportedly received information that NABU considers him a suspect in a number of corruption cases. For example, he met with a wave of criticism for personally using an American SUV which General Motors provided for humanitarian missions to rescue Ukrainian citizens from combat zones. Timoshenko claims he used the vehicle for official trips.

An alternative version of events also exists. Ukraineโ€™s corruption scandals are not favorable for the Biden Administration. They fuel Republican criticism of the Democrats over uncontrolled assistance to Ukraine and support accusations that the plundering of funds allocated to Ukraine is ongoing.โ€ฆ

According to this version, the scandals are highlighted by activists and journalists for their own purposes, such as gaining additional influence over the decision-making process in Kiev. Amidst the military hostilities, such scandals may cause a rise in distrust of the authorities. Political struggles create tension in society and open a second, internal front. Put together, these factors may lead to a severe internal political crisis in Ukraine.

Whatโ€™s next?

Against the background of Ukraineโ€™s high-profile political scandals, staff changes in the government are being actively discussed. Among the officials considered next in line for dismissal are Minister of Energy German Galushchenko, Minister of Youth and Sports Vadim Gutzeit (who recently headed the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine), as well as Minister of Strategic Industries Pavel Ryabikin. However, none of these officials have been involved in corruption scandals, so these resignations, should they happen, would likely be for different reasons.

All of this leads some journalists to ponder possible large-scale shifts in the government. Lozinsky and Shmigal worked together in the Department of Economic Development in the Lviv Regional State Administration. After Shmigal was appointed Deputy Prime Minister in February 2020, he appointed Lozinsky as his first deputy.

The Prime Ministerโ€™s resignation, which would entail the resignation of the entire government, would indeed look like a powerful Zelensky response to corruption scandals. However, this course of events carries serious risks for the authorities, and their are enough to ruin such an intention.

For one, the resignation of the government amid corruption scandals creates risks of a political split in the Verkhovna Rada. Furthermore, if the government were to resign, Western countries could set strict conditions on coordinating candidates for the new government. This happened in 2014, when US citizen Natalia Yaresko was appointed Finance Minister to Arseniy Yatsenyuk's government, and Lithuanian Aivaras Abromavicius was made Minister of Economic Development and Trade.

All this can shake up the system of power and lead to the Presidentโ€™s administration having much less influence over political processes. The current political system is clearly biased towards a single structure: the Office of the President of Ukraine. Following the early parliamentary elections in 2019 and the formation of a majority in the Verkhovna Rada, the entire vertical alignment of power was structured around Zelensky and Yermak, the influence of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine was eliminated, and the information space cleared.

The combat operations in Ukraine merely accelerated these processes. In fact, only three powers can now speak out against the Zelensky-Yermak teamโ€” Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko and his cabinet, the army led by Valery Zaluzhny, and US-controlled structures such as NABU and media affiliated with them. At the same time, decisions regarding resignations are made exclusively by Zelensky and Yermak, who by all means wish to hush up the scandals.

Changes are imminent. The Ukrainian President is being pushed towards structural reform from several sides, including his own officials, the government, the power structures, and particularly, foreign benefactors. Major corruption scandals may lead to fall in the Western public's support of Kiev.

After all, Ukraine is a very expensive project, regardless of its geopolitical value. In addition to risky investments and painful costs, its financiers need clarity in terms of internal management control. The US government regularly says that it will finance Ukraine until its victory, but it also has to account for the money it's splurging.

Of course, the quality of work is evaluated by the employer, not the employee, and this case the Americans are the undoubted bosses.

Despape, Pelosi footage moved to tomorrow. According to this local news report, the defense and prosecutors are afraid that when you see it, you'll believe in conspiracy theories. That's right, the impartial, fact recording body cameras will confuse you and turn you into a Q-anon. If only the video evidence fit the narrative as to avoid misinformation, alas it doesn't, so we must wait till the end of the week to see it.

McGonigal, Trump, and the Truth about America

''We are on the edge of a spy scandal with major implications for how we understand the Trump administration, our national security, and ourselves.''

On 23 January, we learned that a former FBI special agent, Charles McGonigal, was arrested on charges involving taking money to serve foreign interests. One accusation is that in 2017 he took $225,000 from a foreign actor while in charge of counterintelligence at the FBI's New York office. Another charge is that McGonigal took money from Oleg Deripaska, a sanctioned Russian oligarch, after McGonigalโ€™s 2018 retirement from the FBI.

Deripaska, a hugely wealthy metals tycoon close to the Kremlin, "Putin's favorite industrialist," was a figure in a Russian influence operation that McGonigal had investigated in 2016. Deripaska has been under American sanctions since 2018. Deripaska is also the former employer, and the creditor, of Trump's 2016 campaign manager, Paul Manafort.

The reporting on this so far seems to miss the larger implications. One of them is that Trumpโ€™s historical position looks far cloudier. In 2016, Trump's campaign manager (Manafort) was a former employee of a Russian oligarch (Deripaska) and owed money to that same Russian oligarch. And the FBI special agent (McGonigal) who was charged with investigating the Trump campaign's Russian connections then went to work (according to the indictment) for that very same Russian oligarch (Deripaska). This is obviously very bad for Trump personally. But it is also very bad for FBI in New York, for the FBI generally, and for the United States of America.

Another is that we must revisit the Russian influence operation on Trumpโ€™s behalf in 2016, and the strangely weak American response. Moscowโ€™s goal was to move minds and institutions such that Hillary Clinton would lose and Donald Trump would win. We might like to think that any FBI special agent would resist, oppose, or at least be immune to such an operation.

Now we are reliably informed that a trusted FBI actor, one who was responsible for dealing with just this sort of operation, was corrupt. And again, the issue is not just the particular person. If someone as important as McGonigal could take money from foreigners while on the job at FBI New York, and then go to work for a sanctioned Russian oligarch he was once investigating, what is at stake, at a bare minimum, is the culture of the FBI's New York office. The larger issue is the health of our national discussions of politics and the integrity of our election process.

For me personally, McGonigal's arrest brought back an unsettling memory. In 2016, McGonigal was in charge of cyber counterintelligence for the FBI and was put in charge of counterintelligence at the FBI's New York office. That April, I broke the story of the connection between Trump's campaign and Putin's regime, on the basis of Russian open sources. At the time, almost no one wanted to take this connection seriously.

American journalists wanted an American source, but the people who had experienced similar Russian operations were in Russia, Ukraine, or Estonia. Too few people took Trump seriously; too few people took Russia seriously; too few people took cyber seriously; the Venn diagram overlap of people who took all three seriously felt very small. Yet there was also a specific, nagging worry that my own country was not only unprepared but something worse.

After I wrote that piece and another, I heard intimations that something was odd about the FBI office in New York. This was no secret at the time. One did not need to be close to such matters to get that drift. And given that FBI New York was the office dealing with cyber counterintelligence, this was worrying

The reason I was thinking about Trump and Putin back in 2016 was a pattern that I had noticed in eastern Europe, which is my area of expertise. Between 2010 and 2013, Russia sought to control Ukraine using the same methods which were on display in 2016 in its influence operation in the United States: social media, money, and a pliable candidate for head of state. When that failed, Russia invaded Ukraine, under the cover of some very successful influence operations.

(If you find that you do not remember the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2014, it is very possibly because you were caught in the froth of Russian propaganda, spread through the internet, targeted to vulnerabilities.)

The success of that propaganda encouraged Russia to intervene in the United States, using the same methods and institutions. This is what I was working on in 2016 when a similar operation was clearly underway in the United States.

To this observer of Ukraine, it was apparent that Russia was backing Trump in much the way that it had once backed Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, in the hopes of soft control. Trump and Yanukovych were similar figures: nihilistic, venal, seeking power to make or shield money. This made them vulnerable eager partners for Putin. And they had the same chief advisor: the American political consultant Paul Manafort.

Russian soft control of Trump did not require endless personal meetings between the two principals. It just required mutual understanding, which was abundantly on display during the Trump presidency: think of the meeting between Putin and Trump in Helsinki in 2018, when the American president said that he trusted the Russian one and the Russian president said that he had supported the American one as a candidate. The acknowledgment of mutual debts was obvious already in 2016: Russian media talked up Trump, and Trump talked up Putin.

During Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, the rapprochement between Trump and Putin could be effected through intermediaries. An obvious intermediary was Paul Manafort: first, he worked for the Russian oligarch Deripaska as a consultant to teach the Kremlin how to influence Americans. Then he worked for Russia's man in Ukraine Yanukovych, helping to get him elected.

Finally, Manafort worked for Trump, in the same capacity. You might remember Manafort's ties to Russia as revealed by the press in 2016. He

(Jared Kushner, and Donald Trump, Jr.) met with Russians in June 2016 in Trump Tower. Manafort had to resign as Trump's campaign manager that August after it become public that he had received $12.7 million in cash while he was working with Yanukovych and had not reported it.

By 2016, when he was Trump's campaign manager, Manafort owed Deripaska millions of dollars. At the end of their political collaboration, they had entered into a murky investment, at the end of which Deripaska was pursuing Manafort in court. Manafort acknowledged the debt to Deripaska, in the sense that he treated his work for Trump as a way to pay it off.

As Trump's campaign manager, and as Deripaska's debtor, Manafort wrote to offer Deripaska "private briefings" on Trump's campaign. Through an intermediary, Manafort sent the Russians data from the Trump campaign, including campaign polling data about Americans that would be useful for influence operations. Manafort was asked to communicate a Russian plan for the partition of Ukraine to Trump. Manafort was hoping to pay Deripaska back in a currency other than money โ€“ in Manafort's own words, "to get whole."

(These and other details are in Road to Unfreedom.)

South Australian Department for Child Protection chief executive Cathy Taylor resigns

South Australia's head of child protection has stepped down after a year in which her department has been exposed for failures in protecting the state's young people from abuse.

WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised this article contains the names of people who have died.

Key points:

Cathy Taylor has headed the Department for Child Protection since 2016

A review last year called for checks on 500 children in "high-risk settings"

It came after other children's deaths prompted scrutiny on the department

Premier Peter Malinauskas says Department for Child Protection chief executive Cathy Taylor has resigned effective from April 28.

Ms Taylor has been in the role since 2016.

A review released in November recommended structural changes to the Department for Child Protection and the Department for Human Services.

Another review released on the same day found that the welfare of about 500 children in the state should be checked as quickly as possible.

The review was prompted by the deaths of a seven-year-old boy, Makai, and a six-year-old girl, Charlie, in separate incidents in Adelaide's north earlier in 2022.

On Tuesday, the government revealed checks had been carried out on about 92 per cent of the children identified as being in high-risk "settings".

It was also revealed 60 children who had been removed from their parents or reported to authorities as at-risk had died over the past four years.

However, Ms Taylor said the number of children dying in state care had decreased since figures began being recorded 17 years ago.

She said most of the deaths were not from child neglect.

Earlier in the year, a coronial inquest found the deaths of Amber Rose Rigney, 6, and Korey Lee Mitchell, 5, at Hillier in 2016 could have been prevented if child protection authorities took a more "vigorous role" in securing their safety.

Earlier this week, the children's grandfather Steven Egbert called for Ms Taylor to be sacked.

Mr Egbert described the Department of Child Protection as "extremely stubborn".

"We can't just keep making these same mistakes over and over again, unless they can accept the mistakes that have been made I just can't see any progression being made," he said.

Mr Malinauskas thanked Ms Taylor for her service and said a "global recruitment process" will begin to fill her position.

"My government has a strong commitment to ensuring the child protection system has the resources it needs to keep our children safe," he said.

"This includes implementing recommendations made by Mal Hyde and Kate Alexander, allocating an extra $155.6 million to the department, and providing a $7.5 million funding boost in child protection grants to non-government organisations to support children and young people in care and their carers."

Our President has posted a REVIEW!

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

REVIEW: I really like The Five on FoxNews, especially the hosts, with the exception of wacky Jessica Tarlov, who is absolutely terrible. Her facts are knowingly wrong, her jittery presentation is horrendous and, forgive me, her VOICE is grating and unendurable. Juan Williams was terrible, but better than her. I know the show is doing well, but no thanks to Jessica. I find her impossible to take in large doses, & put out this โ€œREVIEWโ€ because it is important to expose Fake News, & Fake People! Don't know about it being anything resembling "news", Sir, but hope some of it's sufficiently entertaining!!

Thinking our way back to 2016, keeping in mind Russia's pattern of seeking soft control, recalling what we know now, let's now reconsider how the FBI treated the Trump-Putin connection that year. After Trump became president, he and some other Republicans claimed that the FBI had overreached by carrying out any sort of investigation at all. Now that McGonigal has been arrested, Trump has claimed that this somehow helps his case.

Common sense suggests the opposite. The man who was supposed to investigate Russian support of Trump then took money from a Russian oligarch close to Putin, who was at one remove from the Trump campaign at the time?

That is not at all a constellation that supports Trump's version of events. If the FBI special agent (McGonigal) who was investigating Trump's connection to Russia was on the payroll of the Russian oligarch (Deripaska) to whom Trump's campaign manager (Manafort) owed millions of dollars and provided information, that does not look good for Trump. It looks hideous

โ€”but not just for Trump.

Anne Applebaum once put the question the right way: why didn't the FBI investigate Trumpโ€™s connections to Putin much earlier? In retrospect, it seems as though the FBI investigation of Trumpโ€™s campaign and its Russian connections in 2016 was not only late but weirdly understated. Known as the "Cross-Fire Hurricane," it defined the issue of Russian influence narrowly, as a matter of personal contact between Trump campaign officials and Russians. Meanwhile, as that investigation was going on, Russia was in the middle of a major social media campaign which, according to the leading scholar of presidential communications, made it possible for Trump to be elected. And that larger influence campaign was not investigated by the FBI, let alone counter.

If anything, it looks as though the New York office of the FBI, wittingly or unwittingly, rather pushed in the same direction than resisted Russiaโ€™s pro-Trump influence operation. As no doubt everyone remembers, Russia was able to phish for emails from institutions and people around Clinton, and used some of them, out of context, to create harmful fictional narratives about her. Simultaneously, there was a concern about Clinton's use of a private email server. In the popular mind, these two issues blurred together, with Trump's help.

Trump asked the Russians to break into Clinton's email account, which they immediately tried to do. Nothing about Clinton's emails proved to be of interest. The FBI closed an investigation in July 2016, saying that there was no basis for criminal charges against Clinton.

The weird FBI director James Comey announced on 28 October 2016, just ten days before the election, that the investigation into Clinton's emails had been reopened. This created a huge brouhaha that (as polls showed) harmed Clinton and helped Trump. The investigation was closed again after only eight days, on 6 November, with no charges against Clinton. But that was just two days before the election, and the damage was done.

As I recall it, in the fury of those last forty-eight hours, no one noticed Comey's second announcement, closing the investigation and clearing Clinton. I was canvassing at the time, and the people I spoke to were still quite excited about the emails. Why would the FBI publicly reveal an investigation on a hot issue involving a presidential candidate right before an election?

It now appears that Comey made the public announcement because of an illicit kind of pressure from special agents in the FBI New York office. Comey believed that they would leak the investigation if he did not announce it.

In Office, Trump knew that Russia had worked to get him elected, but the standard of guilt was placed so high that he could defend himself by saying that he personally had not colluded. The Mueller Report, which I still don't believe many people have actually read, demonstrated that there was a multidimensional Russian influence campaign on behalf of Trump.

The Trump administration countered by claiming that there was no evidence that Trump personally had been in contact with Putin personally. That defense was certainly misleading, but it was available in part because of the narrow scope of FBI investigations in 2016.

To be fair, the FBI, along with Homeland Security, did investigate cyber. But this was after the election when it could make no difference; and in the report, cyber was defined narrowly, limited to phishing and the breach of systems. These are important issues, but they were not the main issue. What the phishing and breach of systems enabled was the main issue: a social media campaign that exploited emotions, including misogyny, to mobilize and demobilize voters.

Russia used the raw email in specific operations on Trump's behalf, for example by rescuing him from the Access Hollywood tapes scandal. Right after it emerged that Trump advocated sexual assault, Russia released a fictional scandal connecting Clinton to the abuse of children. That allowed Trump's followers to believe that whatever he did, she was worse, and the scandal was blunted. It verges on inconceivable that McGonigal was unaware of Russia's 2016 influence campaign on behalf of Trump. He knew the players; he is now alleged to have been employed by one of them. Even I was aware of Russia's 2016 influence campaign. It became one of the subjects of my book Road to Unfreedom, which I finished the following year.

The Russian influence campaign was an issue for American counterintelligence. It is worth pausing to understand why, since it helps us to see the centrality of McGonigal and the meaning of this scandal. Intelligence is about trying to understand. Counterintelligence is about making that hard for others. Branching out from counterintelligence are the more exotic operations designed to make an enemy not only misunderstand the situation but also act on the basis of misunderstandings, against the enemy's own interests. Such operations, which have been a Russian (or Soviet) specialty for more than a century, go under the name of "provocation," "active measures," or "maskirovka." It is the task of counterintelligence to understand active measures and prevent them from working. The Russian influence operation on behalf of Trump was an active measure that the United States failed to halt.

The cyber element, the use of social media, is what McGonigal personally, with his background and in his position, should have been making everyone aware of. In 2016, McGonigal was section chief of the FBI's Cyber-Counterintelligence Coordination Section. That October, he was put in charge of the Counterintelligence Division of the FBI's New York office.

And it was just then, in October 2016, that matters began to spin out of control. There were two moments, late in the presidential campaign, that decided the matter for Donald Trump. The first was when Russian rescued him from the Access Hollywood scandal (7 October). The second was FBI director James Comey's public announcement that he was reopening the investigation of Hillary Clinton's emails (28 October).

The reason Comey made that public announcement at that highly sensitive time, ten days before the election, was not that he believed the public needed to know, nor that the matter was likely of great consequence. On his account, it was that he believed that the FBI New York office was going to leak it anyway. Rudolph Giuliani had apparently already been the beneficiary of leaks; claimed to know in advance of what he called a "surprise" that would help Donald Trump, namely Comey's public announcement of the email investigation.

It looked at the time like Comey had been played by people in FBI New York who wanted Trump to win. Comey has now confirmed this, although his word choice might be different. And I did wonder, back then, if those special agents in New York, in turn, were being played. It was no secret at the time that FBI special agents in New York did not like Hillary Clinton. Making emotional commitments public is asking to be exploited.

For people working in counterintelligence, this is a particularly unwise thing to do. The nature of working in counterintelligence is that, if you are not very good, you will find yourself in the vortex of someone else's active measure. Someone else will take advantage of your known vulnerabilities - your misogyny, perhaps, or your hatred of a specific female politician, or your entirely unjustified belief that a male politician is a patriotic messiah โ€“ and get you to do something that feels like your own decision.

Friend of Satan: how Lucien Greaves and his Satanic Temple are fighting the religious right

They have protested against a homophobic church and opposed prayer in classrooms. Now this minority religion is defending the right to abortion

A statue of Baphomet โ€“ a pagan idol used in popular culture as a representation of the devil, with the head, horns and feet of a goat, the torso of a man and the wings of an angel โ€“ is the centrepiece of the Satanic Templeโ€™s headquarters in Salem, Massachusetts.

More than 8ft (2.4 metres) tall, jet black and altogether unnerving, Baphomet serves as a reminder of what brought the Satanic Temple to fame. In 2013, the group, which is acknowledged as a religion by the US government, responded to the installation of a Ten Commandments monument on the grounds of the Oklahoma state capitol building โ€“ seemingly a flagrant abuse of the US constitutionโ€™s separation of church and state โ€“ by demanding that its own Baphomet statue also be positioned in the grounds. According to the first amendment, which protects freedom of religion, public spaces should be open to all religions or none, it argued.

It turned out that Republican politicians did not want a big statue of a goat-headed pagan deity on capitol grounds. Amid lawsuits, the Oklahoma supreme court eventually ordered that the Ten Commandments monument should be removed.

The tactic, with its wry and anarchic undertones, is typical of the Satanic Templeโ€™s battle against the religious right in the US. In the decade since the spat over the statue, the Temple has tackled prayer in classrooms, religious holiday displays and the distribution of Bibles in schools.

Now, it is taking on another fundamental issue: the right to abortion.

The overturning of Roe v Wade last June opened the door for more than half of US states to effectively ban abortion or restrict access to it, horrifying supporters of reproductive rights. The Satanic Temple โ€“ and many other observers โ€“ believe the decision of the supreme court was made on the basis of religion: specifically the extreme form of Christianity that has come to dominate Republican politics in the US.

The Temple has โ€œseven fundamental tenetsโ€, one of which states: โ€œOneโ€™s body is inviolable, subject to oneโ€™s own will alone.โ€ This, it believes, offers a way around these draconian new laws. It is arguing that its members are exempt from bans or restrictions on abortion, due to their right to a โ€œSatanic Temple religious abortion ritualโ€, more of which later. With lawsuits already filed in Indiana, Idaho, Texas and Missouri, the Satanic Temple is about to find out whether US courts agree.

Legal battles are long-running, expensive and frustrating for people desperate for immediate change. But Lucien Greaves, who co-founded the Satanic Temple in 2012, points to the success the Republican party has had in overturning Roe v Wade โ€“ a decision brought before the court through decades of lobbying and legislating.

โ€œI get messages from people denigrating us for taking legal action to assert our rights, saying: โ€˜You canโ€™t change the system from within the system,โ€™โ€ Greaves says.

โ€œAnd I keep asking them: โ€˜What the fuck do you think you just saw happen? Thatโ€™s what they just did.โ€™โ€

Tall, slim, pale and dressed in black, Greaves is a fitting frontman for a group that is regularly demonised by its Christian opponents. A leather strap wrapped around his wrist, his thin blond ponytail tied up with black bands, he could be in one of the heavy metal bands that terrified neurotic parents in the 1980s and 90s.

โ€œWe have to play the long game,โ€ Greaves says. โ€œThey spent generations doing this.โ€

Satanists donโ€™t believe in Satan in a literal, demonic sense, Greaves explains, but rather as a symbol of rebellion and opposition to authoritarianism. According to the Satanic Templeโ€™s website: โ€œTo embrace the name Satan is to embrace rational inquiry removed from supernaturalism and archaic tradition-based superstitions.โ€

The Satanic Temple held its first public activity in January 2013, and a decade on it has more than 700,000 members, with congregations in 24 states and six countries, including the UK, Germany and Finland.

REPORT: A Surprising Number Of Antifa Members Are White Children Of Privilege

After the recent arrest of the adult child of Democrat Rep. Katherine Clark for Antifa related crimes in Boston, people have been looking at the far left group and noticing that many of their members are young, white people from privileged backgrounds.

PJ Media reports:

Turns Out the Atlanta Terrorists Are Children of Privilege

Weโ€™ve already learned that the vast majority of the Antifa insurrectionists who terrorized Atlanta over the weekend โ€” and have occupied the future site of a public safety training facility for months โ€” hailed from nowhere near Atlanta, but the more we learn about the Antifa criminals who attacked cops and did damage all over downtown Atlanta, we realize that these arenโ€™t oppressed minorities rising up against the system.

It turns out the Atlanta terrorists are largely children of immense privilege.

Take, for example, the rather evil-looking Francis Carroll (whose name WSB misspelled below), the guy who allegedly lit a police cruiser on fire Saturday night.

PJ Media continues with other examples:

Carroll hails from Kennebunkport, Maine โ€” yep, the same Kennebunkport that is home to the Bush family compound. And we all know that towns with compounds are always fancy. Heโ€™s the scion of a multimillion-dollar family that owns a yacht, and he lived in his parentsโ€™ mansion before coming to Atlanta to wreak havoc.

Over at the New York Post, Andy Ngo notes that Carroll โ€œwas among six people arrested and charged with domestic terrorism, aggravated assault and other crimes on Dec. 13 following a string of property attacks around the area, a carjacking and assaults on officers. They were all bailed out by activists who crowdfunded their legal defense using Twitter.โ€

And then thereโ€™s Serena Hertal. The Idaho native is a graduate of $82,000-a-year Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif. How has she made use of that high-dollar education? By facing charges of domestic terrorism, aggravated assault, and criminal trespass in Atlanta.

How about Ivan James Ferguson? The 23-year-old Nevada native is a clarinetist who performed with orchestras up and down the West Coast before throwing it all away to interfere with the safety of a city two thousand miles away. Ferguson studied at the swanky San Francisco Conservatory of Music, which should serve him well in jail.

We see this again and again.
