'Today is a dark day for the Internet,' the Electronic Frontier Foundation said after Congress overwhelmingly passed the bill in 2018

 

President Biden's nominee to sit on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) currently sits on the board of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a group that has vehemently opposed bipartisan legislation designed to protect sex trafficking victims.

 

Gigi Sohn — who Biden nominated this month for a vacant FCC seat previously held by Ajit Pai, the agency's former chairman — joined EFF's board of directors in December 2018 after being a "close collaborator" with the group for nearly two decades, according to EFF Executive Director Cindy Cohn. That same year, EFF unleashed an assault on two bipartisan efforts to hold sex traffickers accountable and protect victims.

 

EFF has focused its ire particularly on the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA) and Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA). The two bills were combined into one package that passed the House by a margin of 388-25 and passed the Senate in a 97-2 vote in early 2018 before former President Donald Trump signed it into law a month later.

Congress secures first cooperation from National Archives in Biden document probe

 

House Oversight Committee to have transcribed interview Tuesday with Archives' top lawyer.

 

House Republicans on Thursday secured their first cooperation from the National Archives to gain information about the classified documents found in President Joe Biden's Delaware home and former Washington D.C. think tank. The agreement ends a stalemate over a growing scandal that has rocked Washington and led to a request for all living former presidents and vice presidents to search their own possessions for any missing national secrets.

 

House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) told Just the News that his committee will be interviewing the National Archives' top lawyer, Gary Stern, next Tuesday to get the first answers about what documents were located, where they were located and who may have had access to them.

 

"They have finally agreed to come in and sit down for a transcribed interview," Comer said on the "Just the News, No Noise" television show on Real America's Voice. "So we will be able to have a formal interview. We're going to ask them all the questions that everyone in America wants answered. And hopefully they'll provide those answers."

 

Comer had gotten a cool response from the White House and Justice Department in his initial requests for information, a stark contrast to last fall when the Biden administration routinely leaked details about a similar controversy involving documents found at former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate during an FBI raid.

"We need to know who's buying this artwork," he said. "And I'm willing to sign a confidentiality agreement. You know, I need to know about this art, because there's a pattern here of our adversaries, especially in China, sending money to Biden interests, whether it be some of Hunter's or [his uncle] Jim Biden's shady business dealings, whether it be to the University of Pennsylvania to fund the Biden center for diplomacy, or reportedly to purchase some of Biden's artwork at very high prices.

 

"We're concerned that there's a pattern of corruption here with respect to the CCP that may be compromising this White House."

Over the past few years, a cottage industry of “fact checkers” and “misinformation” experts has emerged to advance the left’s mission of silencing dissent to its agenda around the world. Analysis of the funding of these organizations leads back to a familiar figure: left-wing billionaire George Soros.

 

The New York Post broke down the trail of Soros dollars linking a global network of organizations intent on suppressing and discrediting conservative voices online.

Later in the year, heading into the midterms, in an open letter signed by 11 other leftist groups, the Soros-funded Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights called on Big Tech CEOs to take “immediate” action to spread so-called “voting disinformation” to “help prevent the undermining” of democracy. The signatories had received a combined $30.3 million from Soros in just a four-year period.

 

As the Hungarian publication Remix revealed, of the 11 Facebook-approved fact checking organizations for Central and Eastern Europe, eight were funded by Soros. As is the case for the US, these fact checking groups are largely critical of the political right.

 

One project of the Poynter Institute specifically, the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), was launched in 2015 with its initial funding coming from the National Endowment for Democracy (backed by the US State Department), the Omidyar Network, Google, Facebook, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and George Soros’ Open Society Foundations.

 

“Fact checking” is an important element in the left’s online censorship machine, giving social media companies a politically neutral pretext so censor conservative viewpoints.

 

Facebook notoriously uses fact checkers to dodge responsibility for censorship, even though its infamous decision to suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story took place before any third party fact checkers had weighed in. Republican Introduces Bill to Hold China Accountable for the Coronavirus

 

Republican Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) is introducing a measure that would halt federal funds from going to China until the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) reimburses the U.S. for the trillions spent on coronavirus relief.

 

The “China Lied, People Died Act” would stop federal funds from going to China until the communist regime pays America back for the trillions spent in the form of coronavirus relief due to the virus that originated in Wuhan.

 

Speaking to Fox News Digital, Nehls said, “My first order of business this Congress is holding China accountable.”

Toyota's CEO To Step Down As New Chief Will "Remodel" Automaker

 

Akio Toyoda, the CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation and grandson of the company's founder, is stepping down after leading the world's largest automaker for 14 years, according to Nikkei Asia.

 

Chief Branding Officer Koji Sato will replace Akio Toyoda on April 1. The plan is to "fully remodel" the automaker as a mobility company and accelerate the electrification of vehicles under Sato's leadership.

 

Toyoda has led the company that pioneered hybrid cars with its Prius model since 2009 and will become chair. Sato is currently the chief branding officer and head of the Lexus unit. The handover is primarily due to Toyota's slow adoption of electric vehicles.

 

"Because of my strong passion for cars, I am an old-fashioned person in regards to digitalization, electric vehicles, and connected cars. I cannot go beyond being a car guy, and that is my limitation," Toyoda told reporters.

 

"The new team can do what I can't do . . . I now need to take a step back in order to let young people enter the new chapter of what the future of mobility should be like," he continued.

 

One of Toyoda's mishaps was the botched launch of the company's first mass-produced EV, the bZ4X, which was immediately recalled after its launch last year. He also has had a staunch view that hybrids are much better than EVs, which likely led to the management reshuffle.

 

"The mission of the new team, led by new President Sato, is to fully remodel Toyota as a mobility company," Toyoda emphasized.

 

Tatsuo Yoshida, a senior analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, said today's announcement is a total "surprise." He noted, "Toyoda's choice to remain as chairman will help maintain the company's business strategy and continuity."

China’s CCP forcing students to sign ‘loyalty pledges’ before studying abroad

 

China is using government scholarships to effectively turn students around the world into agents of the Chinese Communist Party, with loved ones back home facing consequences if they show any disloyalty.

 

Contracts signed by tens of thousands of Chinese scholarship recipients instruct them to “protect the honor of the motherland,” hone their “ability to follow orders,” and obey Chinese laws even while abroad, Radio Free Asia reported.

 

If any student “behaves extremely badly,” quits school, or moves to another country, China would force their designated “guarantors” back home to pay back a portion of their scholarship, according to the contracts.

 

“The Western media have reported many cases of Chinese students and scholars stealing high-tech military technologies, and besieging protesters who supported Hong Kong’s anti-extradition protests,” commentator Wang Longmeng told RFA. “A lot of people who have been awarded Chinese government scholarships to study abroad have basically been recruited by the state, and these agreements are the best proof of that.”

China aimed to send 27,000 students overseas with state scholarships in 2021, according to a document reviewed by RFA. The document stated their scholarships depended entirely on loyalty to the CCP and included a pledge to “come back and serve their country” after graduation.

 

“If you take public money in China, you are one of them, and you are theirs, the party’s,” Sweden-based writer Wan Zhi told RFA, adding, “This has always been the Communist Party’s trick.”

 

RFA revealed the extent of the practice after the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported earlier this month about 30 Chinese doctoral students arriving in the country, having signed pledges to serve China’s interests while staying in Sweden.

 

Since then, Sweden’s Uppsala and Lund universities have ended their relationship with the China Scholarship Council, the main organization China awards scholarships through. The Royal Institute of Technology, the country’s largest technical university, is “in discussions” with the council, RFA reported.

Injuries Reported After Explosion At USC Science Building

 

An explosion occurred at a three-story Science building on the University of Southern California campus on Thursday. At least one person was injured and is being evaluated, fire officials said.

 

The building was evacuated, and the individual met with the LAFD outside on their own. The cause of the explosion is currently unknown.

 

The building is being evacuated and the LAFD HazMat task force has been requested to conduct a thorough investigation.

 

There is no active fire hazard at this time, LAFD said.

On Thursday, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency in response to a violent protest in Atlanta over the killing of environmental activist Manuel Teran.

 

The declaration gives Kemp the authority to call up to 1,000 members of the National Guard to help “subdue riot and unlawful assembly” for the next 15 days.

 

The governor’s spokesperson stated that this is a precautionary measure and no mobilization has occurred yet. On Saturday night, protesters set a police cruiser on fire and damaged the windows of three businesses.

 

Six individuals, none of which resided in Atlanta, were arrested on charges including domestic terrorism and explosives were recovered.

 

This violence occurred among hundreds of demonstrators who were mourning the death of the activist, known as Tortuguita, who was killed by authorities while protesting the construction of a public safety training center.

 

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation stated that Tortuguita had shot and seriously injured a state trooper before being killed.

IMF Weighs Ukraine Aid Package Worth Up to $16 Billion

 

The International Monetary Fund is exploring a multiyear aid package for Ukraine worth as much as $16 billion to help cover the country’s needs and provide a catalyst for more international funding while Kyiv tries to repel Russian forces, according to people familiar with the matter.

 

Whether the program is implemented hinges on a range of conditions, including endorsement from Group of Seven nations, and Ukraine’s donors and creditors ensuring the sustainability of the country’s debt, said the people.

 

The plan would also require changes to IMF lending rules so the fund could lend to the war-torn country, and the government in Kyiv would need to commit to a series of policies, on top of successfully completing a four-month non-cash IMF program approved last year, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because they’re not authorized to discuss the issues publicly.

 

If approved, the three- to four-year program — worth $14 billion to $16 billion total — will assume a disbursement of $5 billion to $7 billion in the first year, according to the people. There’s hope the plan will be agreed on by the end of March, with the first tranche coming as early as in April in the best-case scenario, they said. It’s also expected to help propel more financial support for the country from public and private creditors.

 

The IMF “remains closely engaged” with Ukraine, the fund said in a statement in response to questions from Bloomberg News, adding the cooperation “could pave the way toward a fully fledged program,” without elaborating on details such as the potential size of a loan.

 

Ukraine’s Finance Ministry declined to comment. In a separate statement on Thursday, the ministry expressed hopes for a “fully fledged” program with the fund that would include financing.

His father is is jail on 22 felonies for family abuse, he hasn't had best role model and little God stuff, except from his mom. INTRODUCTION

 

  1. Among the wonderful technological discoveries which men of talent, especially in the present era, have made with God's help, the Church welcomes and promotes with special interest those which have a most direct relation to men's minds and which have uncovered new avenues of communicating most readily news, views and teachings of every sort. The most important of these inventions are those media which, such as the press, movies, radio, television and the like, can, of their very nature, reach and influence, not only individuals, but the very masses and the whole of human society, and thus can rightly be called the media of social communication.

 

  1. The Church recognizes that these media, if properly utilized, can be of great service to mankind, since they greatly contribute to men's entertainment and instruction as well as to the spread and support of the Kingdom of God. The Church recognizes, too, that men can employ these media contrary to the plan of the Creator and to their own loss. Indeed, the Church experiences maternal grief at the harm all too often done to society by their evil use. Hence, this sacred Synod, attentive to the watchful concern manifested by the Supreme Pontiffs and Bishops in a matter of such great importance, judges it to be its duty to treat of the principal questions linked with the media of social communication. It trusts, moreover, that the teaching and regulations it thus sets forth will serve to promote, not only the eternal welfare of Christians, but also the progress of all mankind.

So that the general principles and norms of this sacred Synod with respect to the media of social communications may be put into effect, by the express will of the Council, the office of the Holy See mentioned in Number 19 should undertake, with the assistance of experts from various countries, to issue a pastoral instruction.

I have been wondering why exactly Dr Mathai Mammen resigned his very well paid position at JNJ.

It’s very unusual to resign with no reason given. The “pursuit of other opportunities” line is pure puffery. Walking away from millions in bonuses, options & restricted stock is almost unheard of at this level.

If it was for reasons of health, that might have been alluded to. I’d be sorry to learn that this was the reason. My hunch is it isn’t health.

I’m not claiming I unseated him, though that was my intention in naming him in several video interviews.

I’m looking at whether he re-emerges in another senior role, for example in biotech, where he was previously very successful.

If anyone has insights, I’d be intrigued to hear them.

Mathai is the person who’s most disappointed me. I confess it’s partly because I thought he was a genuinely good person. And a very smart one.

These cannot both be true.

Quite a few bands had that happen at least once or twice back in the day. That was a hard life to live touring drinking drugging playing. The ones who have made it this far won’t much longer due to age. End of an era.
