Speaker McCarthy on Pentagon Leaks: Biden Administration Has Failed to Secure Classified Information

 

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy vowed to get answers on the Pentagon leaks that have embarrassed the Biden administration and called into question if it can secure classified information.

 

“The Biden administration has failed to secure classified information. Through our committees, Congress will get answers as to why they were asleep at the switch,” he tweeted Friday.

 

As speaker, McCarthy is a member of the Gang of Eight, who is briefed by the executive branch on classified intelligence matters.

 

While Congress was out of session for the last two weeks and most members appeared to focus on issues back in their districts, several Republicans weighed in on the leaks, which revealed top secret information about the U.S.’s military efforts in Ukraine, the U.S. government’s secret observations about its allies and partners, and other embarrassing intelligence.

In August 2021, Biden disastrously withdrew American troops from Afghanistan in a swirl of chaos, resulting in the deaths of 13 honorable U.S. soldiers in Kabul. “These are idiots we’re dealing with,” Trump told Tucker Carlson on Tuesday. “They left $85 billion worth of equipment. They left our American citizens behind…We didn’t have one soldier killed in 18 months.”

Trump warned Tucker, “The biggest problem we have in the whole world – it’s not global warming. It’s nuclear warming. Evan Corcoran, Top Trump attorney recuses himself from Mar-a-Lago documents case

 

Evan Corcoran, a top attorney for former President Donald Trump, reportedly recused himself from working on the case regarding documents marked as classified that were found at Trump's Mar-a-Lago, Florida, home.

 

Corcoran stopped working on the case after appearing before a federal grand jury last month, The Washington Post reported Saturday, citing people familiar with the matter.

 

Trump is still being represented by Corcoran in other cases, including special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, the sources said on the condition of anonymity.

 

Judges ruled that Corcoran could not use his attorney-client privilege to avoid disclosing information about his discussions with Trump, allowing prosecutors probing Trump's classified documents case to question Corcoran.

 

Smith's grand jury proceedings are secret, so it is unclear how helpful Corcoran's testimony may be. Legal ethics rules, however, generally prohibit lawyers from being trial advocates when they are likely to play the role of an essential witness.

 

Corcoran's recusal could be temporary, as the witness advocate requirement is not mandatory until a case goes on trial, a person familiar with the matter also said.

Canadian Teen Suspended From Catholic High School for Opposing Transgender Ideology Files Human Rights Complaint

 

A Canadian teenager suspended from his Catholic high school for opposing transgender ideology has filed a human rights complaint alleging that he was subject to religious discrimination.

 

Josh Alexander, 17, was suspended from St. Joseph’s High School in Renfrew, Ontario, in November and issued a trespass notice for organizing a student walkout against biological males being allowed in girls’ bathrooms.

 

Last week, attorney James Kitchen with Liberty Coalition Canada filed a complaint with the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal over the suspension.

 

“Josh believes he is called by the Lord Jesus Christ to proclaim the truth which includes telling those around him about the Lord’s design for gender and to openly oppose the School Board’s policy of permitting males to enter the girls’ washrooms,” the complaint said. “Josh believes he would commit a sin if he disregarded the Lord’s calling on his life and remained silent.”

 

Fox News reports, “The complaint recounts that students erupted during a math class when Alexander argued against the school’s bathroom policy. When he claimed that men have penises and women have vaginas, his classmates reportedly called him a ‘misogynist,’ a ‘racist,’ and a ‘homophobic transphobe,’ while the teacher allegedly ‘nodded and gestured at the students yelling at Josh, indicating his approval of the students’ name-calling.'”

 

“Alexander was ultimately suspended and told that his continued attendance would be detrimental to the physical and mental well-being of transgender students, the complaint says,” the report explained. “His suspension was technically lifted in January but has effectively continued after the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board ‘excluded’ him for the rest of the school year.”

 

Principal Derek Lennox allegedly told Alexander that he could return to school only if he stopped using the “dead names” of transgender classmates and avoid being in their classes.

 

On February 6, Alexander attempted to return to school and was arrested for violating the trespassing order.

Juice sends first ‘selfies’ from space

ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) has taken its first monitoring camera images showing part of the spacecraft with Earth as a stunning backdrop.

 

The mission launched on an Ariane 5 from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou on 14 April 14:14 CEST and the images were captured in the hours afterwards.

 

Juice has two monitoring cameras located on the ‘body’ of the spacecraft to record various deployments. The images provide 1024 x 1024 pixel snapshots. The images shown here are lightly processed with a preliminary colour adjustment.

 

A scientific camera will be used for taking high resolution images of Jupiter and its icy moons once in the Jovian system in 2031.

 

Juice monitoring camera 1 (JMC1) is located on the front of the spacecraft and looks diagonally up into a field of view that sees a part of one of the solar arrays, and will eventually see deployed antennas.

 

Juice monitoring camera 2 (JMC2) is located on the top of the spacecraft and is placed to monitor the multi-stage deployment of the 16 m-long Radar for Icy Moons Exploration (RIME) antenna. RIME is an ice-penetrating radar that will be used to remotely probe the subsurface structure of the large moons of Jupiter.

 

RIME is currently in stowed configuration; it will unfold in stages over the coming days. Images will be taken to capture the full deployment.

 

The monitoring cameras will also be active during various mission operations, including gravity assist flybys of the Moon, Earth and Venus during the cruise to Jupiter.

On Earth, we often take our planet's magnetic field for granted. It protects living creatures from the sun's rays, draws compass needles north and even creates beautiful auroras.

 

Other worlds in our solar system have magnetic fields too — but what about Earth-like planets around other stars? New research may have revealed a promising lead.

 

Recent observations from the Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescopes in New Mexico revealed evidence of a magnetic field on the rocky exoplanet YZ Ceti b, which orbits a star about 12 light-years away from Earth. This is the first possible detection of a magnetic field on a planet beyond our solar system, according to a study published on April 3 in the journal Nature Astronomy(opens in new tab).

 

"This research shows not only that this particular rocky exoplanet likely has a magnetic field but provides a promising method to find more," study author Joe Pesce(opens in new tab), director of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), said in a statement(opens in new tab).

 

Magnetic fields are particularly interesting to astronomers because they're an important part of making a planet habitable. Without a magnetic field, energetic particles from a star can erode a planet's atmosphere, stripping away the blanket of gas that can support life.

 

"The search for potentially habitable or life-bearing worlds in other solar systems depends in part on being able to determine if rocky, Earth-like exoplanets actually have magnetic fields," Pesce said.

 

YZ Ceti b, however, isn't a habitable planet. To detect the radio waves from a small, far-away exoplanet's magnetic field, astronomers had to look towards a particularly extreme example. YZ Ceti b is quite close to its star — far too close to be a pleasant temperature for life — and it's also orbiting at such a pace that one of its years is only two Earth days long.

 

This is so close that the planet "plows" through material sloughing off of the star, according to the researchers. The planet's magnetic field pushes electrically charged plasma back toward the star, which then interacts with the star's own magnetic field, emitting bright flashes of energy.

 

Essentially, the radio waves the team observed were an aurora on the star, likely created by the interactions with the planet, the team said.

 

"There should also be an aurora on the planet if it has its own atmosphere," Sebastian Pineda(opens in new tab), University of Colorado Boulder astronomer and co-author on the new research, said in the statement.

 

"This is telling us new information about the environment around stars," Pineda added. "This idea is what we're calling 'extrasolar space weather.'"

 

The team isn’t 100% certain whether the stellar aurora is entirely caused by YZ Ceti b, though. Further observations are needed to confirm this is actually due to a rocky planet's magnetic field, and not just a feature of the star itself. However, the team remains optimistic that these findings could lead to future breakthroughs in the search for habitable alien planets.

 

Study co-author Jackie Villadsen(opens in new tab), an astronomer at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, said in the statement that this "could really plausibly be" the first detection of a magnetic field on a rocky exoplanet. "But I think it's going to be a lot of follow-up work before a really strong confirmation of radio waves caused by a planet comes out," she added.

Starship is a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, help humanity return to the Moon and travel to Mars and beyond. With a test such as this, success is measured by how much we can learn, which will inform and improve the probability of success in the future as SpaceX rapidly advances development of Starship.

To date, the SpaceX team has completed multiple sub-orbital flight tests of Starship’s upper stage from Starbase, successfully demonstrating an unprecedented approach to controlled flight. These flight tests helped validate the vehicle’s design, proving Starship can fly through the subsonic phase of entry before re-lighting its engines and flipping itself to a vertical configuration for landing.

In addition to the testing of Starship’s upper stage, the team has conducted numerous tests of the Super Heavy rocket, which include the increasingly complex static fires that led to a full-duration 31 Raptor engine test – the largest number of simultaneous rocket engine ignitions in history. The team has also constructed the world’s tallest rocket launch and catch tower. At 146 meters, or nearly 500 feet tall, the launch and catch tower is designed to support vehicle integration, launch, and catch of the Super Heavy rocket booster. For the first flight test, the team will not attempt a vertical landing of Starship or a catch of the Super Heavy booster.
