27-year-old woman plunges to her death from roof of NYC hotel

 

A 27-year-old woman plunged to her death from the roof of a Times Square hotel Tuesday night, police said.

 

The woman’s body landed on a two-story scaffolding below the OYO Times Square hotel on 47th Street and she was pronounced dead at the scene around 10:30 p.m., according to the NYPD.

 

Police are investigating whether the woman fell or jumped from the roof.

 

Cops said there was a dispute at the hotel before the woman’s death and took a man into custody.

 

The man was brought to Bellevue Hospital for an evaluation, but it’s unclear if he’s facing any charges.

 

Police did not immediately know if the woman went to the roof alone or was with others.

Germany, Italy clamp down on Italian mob with raids, arrests

 

BERLIN (AP) — Police arrested suspects and raided homes early Wednesday across Germany and Italy in a massive effort to clamp down on members of the Italian ’ndrangheta organized crime syndicate.

 

In Germany, more than 1,000 officers searched dozens of homes, offices and stores in the states of Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia, prosecutors said in a joint statement.

 

In Italy, carabinieri police backed by helicopters served arrest warrants on 108 people who were accused, among other things, of mafia association; possession, production, and trafficking of drugs and weapons; and money laundering.

 

European authorities have been waging a campaign against the Calabria-based ’ndrangheta, arguably the world’s richest organized crime group, in recent years. The group has exploited tens of billions of dollars in cocaine revenues over decades to extend its criminal reach across Europe and into several continents as the Sicilian Mafia lost influence.

 

Over 30 suspects who had outstanding warrants were arrested in Germany.

Among other things, the suspects are accused of money laundering, gang tax evasion, commercial gang fraud, and narcotics smuggling, a statement from the German state office of criminal investigation in North Rhine-Westphalia said.

 

The raids are part of a wider joint investigation involving Europol and also included simultaneous measures against the group across Europe, the statement said.

 

A press release from carabinieri in Regio Calabria, where the ’ndrangheta is based, said arrest warrants were also served in Belgium, France, Portugal, Romania and Spain.

Why Are We Letting the Chinese Buy Our Land?

Recent events make this question less about commerce and agriculture and more about national security.

 

When we think of the open spaces out in what’s derisively known as “flyover country,” we think of land that’s used for farming, ranching, mining, and timber. We think of millions upon millions of bountiful acres that keep our bellies full, our lights on, and our industries producing.

 

While Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates is our nation’s largest farmland owner, his portfolio of 269,000 agricultural acres pales in comparison to the acreage — generally in vast holdings of ranch land — owned by various individuals and families. You may recognize some of the names among the top 10: CNN founder Ted Turner, Subway cofounder Peter Buck, and Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke. Even the family heirs controlling the venerable King Ranch make the list with more than 900,000 acres owned.

 

But there are other entities attempting to muscle their way onto this list — Red Chinese entities.

 

It hasn’t drawn as many headlines as the controversy over the Confucius Institutes we talked about a few years back, or the more recent flight of the red zeppelin, but there’s a growing concern about Chinese ownership of our domestic land — particularly the soil on which we’re growing our food.

 

The ChiComs have been on a global land-buying spree, and our farms are no exception. The amount of American land owned by Chinese interests has increased by more than fivefold in the last decade, with that property often strategically purchased near sensitive military or civilian institutions. That buying spree is even more pronounced in other areas of the world, leading South Dakota Republican Congressman Dusty Johnson to observe, “When they own that African farmland, when they own that Southeast Asian farmland, they gain more control over the whole global food supply.”

 

At this point, America can still pretty much feed herself, but a portion of our agricultural exports are now competing with Chinese-owned farms in other parts of the world. The issue is being addressed, however, and it’s a two-pronged approach. States worried about the encroachment of foreign interests on our farmland have been willing to place restrictions on its purchase, with the latest of several examples being a state house bill called the North Carolina Farmland and Military Protection Act.

 

“Our state’s agricultural land is one of our most important assets and it is common sense that we protect it from foreign governments that do not have America’s best interests in mind,” said State Representative Jennifer Balkcom, the bill’s sponsor. If adopted, North Carolina would join a list of 18 states with some form of regulation on foreign ownership of property.

 

Good for those 18. What’s keeping the other 32?

 

Meanwhile, Congress is itself trying to get into the act with a series of competing proposals. And while Johnson cautioned that the Biden administration “is not engaging with us in Congress as much as I think some people would hope,” the bills are proceeding in a hearteningly bipartisan fashion. One key change would be the addition of the secretary of agriculture to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, which reviews the potential foreign acquisition of land and businesses.

 

Two of America’s biggest assets are its landmass and its attractiveness to foreign investment. Sometimes, though, that investment involves our land, and we as a sovereign nation should be able to dictate whether such purchases are in our best interests or not.

 

Recent events — such as the spy balloon flyover and the opening of clandestine police stations in our cities — strongly suggest that the Red Chinese might not have our own best interests at heart.

Banks Collapse After Federal Fiscal Failure

 

Joe Biden doesn’t run the banks, but his economic mismanagement and federal regulation brought down another big bank.

 

We humans are funny creatures. We all know deep down that responsibly managing resources, including our finances, is critically important. But in practice, we often simply don’t care.

 

We just want that next vacation or new toy. We just want the bank on the corner to keep dispensing money without failing. We just want the federal government to keep running those programs to “take care” of people. Let someone else pick up the tab.

 

Oh how reality intrudes.

 

The U.S. national debt is $31.7 trillion and counting, and we officially hit the statutory debt ceiling in January. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has been using “extraordinary measures” to keep things running, though she warned yesterday that those measures will expire faster than she thought previously. “After reviewing recent federal tax receipts,” Yellen wrote in a letter to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, “our best estimate is that we will be unable to continue to satisfy all of the government’s obligations by early June, and potentially as early as June 1, if Congress does not raise or suspend the debt limit before that time.”

 

Her lecturing letter ought to be addressed to Joe Biden. McCarthy and his fellow Republicans already did pass legislation increasing the debt ceiling. It is Joe Biden who has so far refused to negotiate, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has dutifully waited with him on the sidelines. They prefer to blame Republicans than to actually do anything responsible.

 

Biden did finally reverse course Monday, inviting McCarthy to come to the White House … next week. Nothing like urgency.

 

We bring that up because Biden has a fiscal log in his own eye when it comes to the rash of bank failures on his watch — including three of the four biggest failures in U.S. history.

 

In March, Mark Alexander thoroughly covered the failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. SVB was America’s 16th-largest bank, and its failure was the second largest in U.S. history.

 

Regulators seized First Republic Bank and on Monday sold its assets to JPMorgan Chase. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) will take a $13 billion hit, compared with about $20 billion for SVB. First Republic’s failure is now the second biggest, outmatched only by the 2008 collapse of Washington Mutual. JPMorgan also purchased Washington Mutual, and its buyout of First Republic only adds to the balance sheet of America’s largest bank.

 

Too big to fail just keeps getting even bigger.

 

What happened? In short, bad management. “Since the sudden collapse of Silicon Valley Bank in March, attention has focused on First Republic as the weakest link in the U.S. banking system,” reports CNBC. “Like SVB, which catered to the tech startup community, First Republic was also a California-based specialty lender of sorts. It focused on serving rich coastal Americans, enticing them with low-rate mortgages in exchange for leaving cash at the bank.”

 

In other words, like SVB, First Republic served wealthy Democrat elites — like Mark Zuckerberg. Its strategy of five-star service and cheap loans rather than rate of return for wealthy depositors didn’t end up panning out.

 

One particular wealthy Democrat elite blames the nebulous forces of deregulation. “The failure of First Republic Bank shows how deregulation has made the too big to fail problem even worse,” Senator Elizabeth Warren declared. “A poorly supervised bank was snapped up by an even bigger bank — ultimately taxpayers will be on the hook. Congress needs to make major reforms to fix a broken banking system.”

Someone get a Leftmedia fact-checker on the line. They scolded and censored anyone who dared suggest that taxpayers might “be on the hook” for SVB or Signature Bank. We’re guessing they’ll just whistle and look the other way now that Warren has said it, maybe because she hedged with future tense.

 

Moreover, Warren is a big fan of the Dodd-Frank financial takeover that passed before Harvard’s most famous “Native American” arrived in the Senate. Whatever deregulation happened under the too-brief Trump administration was merely rolling back some of the power grabbed by Warren’s ilk. It does not mean the feds don’t still regulate the financial sector even more heavily than before 2008.

 

Remember that three of the four biggest bank collapses in U.S. history occurred post Dodd-Frank and under Joe Biden’s inflationary economic regime.

 

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve just released its autopsy of SVB Friday, and it echoes Warren’s statist conclusion: The failure of regulation means more regulation is needed.

 

The inconvenient truth, however, is that SVB collapsed in part because of regulation. The Fed’s regulatory “framework is quite complicated,” the report admits, and SVB expended “considerable effort seeking to understand the rules and when they apply, including the implications of different evaluation criteria, historical and prospective transition periods, cliff effects, and complicated definitions.”

 

As the editors of The Wall Street Journal translate, “SVB seems to have been more focused on complying with financial regulation than prudently managing its balance-sheet risks.” Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michael Barr boasts of this “unflinching” report, but in reality all we got from the Federal Reserve was scapegoating and blame-shifting.

 

Just remember that these are the same people — mostly Democrats — who are managing our national fiscal house. SVB, Signature Bank, and First Republic all had bad debts that overwhelmed them.

A former FBI supervisory special agent has been arrested on charges related to the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack, according to court records.

 

Jared Wise, who was with the FBI for more than a decade, was arrested this week in Oregon, the records show. He is charged with four federal crimes, including illegally entering and remaining in the Capitol building.

 

Wise has not yet entered a formal plea.

If you will observe, it appears that the Fed spoke up about intervening around the time SVB went out. I think it was designed to breed contagion. So intervention warranted. And no, not the Fed under it's own free will. That hasn't been present in a while.

 

Some of these banks need to go out and should go out. But for bad banking practices and fraud. Not for headlines and to spark fear.

 

What is quite interesting is that Signature Bank where POTUS daughter was on the board, was originated from a Israeli bank linage. It was deeply involved in money laundering for criminal activity through it's SEN crypto network.

European anti-mafia raids target more than 100 suspects

Police made dozens of arrests across Europe as part of a “wide-scale” operation against the notorious Italian ‘Ndrangheta mafia, officials said Wednesday.

Authorities in Italy, Germany and Belgium were due to provide more details on the raids at separate press conferences later Wednesday.

In Germany, hundreds of officers carried out raids in five parts of the country, regional prosecutors said in a statement, adding that operations also took place in Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain.

Thirty people were arrested in Germany alone as dozens of apartments, houses and offices were searched.

“The suspects are accused, among other things, of money laundering, organised tax evasion, organised fraud and narcotics smuggling,” the regional prosecutors said in a joint statement.

The ‘Ndrangheta is Italy’s most powerful and wealthy mafia, controlling the bulk of cocaine flowing into Europe. It operates in more than 40 countries around the world.

It has successfully expanded well beyond its traditional domains of drug trafficking and loan sharking, now using shell companies and frontmen to reinvest illegal gains in the legitimate economy.

Investigators in Italy’s Reggio Calabria on Wednesday identified 108 suspects as part of the case, for alleged crimes including mafia association, international drug trafficking and weapons trafficking.

A spokesman for the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office said it had launched the European investigation and had been working on the case for “four, five years”, in cooperation with other EU states.

Around 20 raids were carried out in Belgium alone.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state, police detained 15 suspects, while raiding 51 properties.

In the southern state of Bavaria, police were investigating eight people, including four who were arrested.

Another 11 suspects were picked up in the states of Thuringia and Rhineland-Palatinate, while two men sought in Saarland were detained in Italy.

Based in Calabria, the region that forms the tip of Italy’s boot, the ‘Ndrangheta is considered one of the world’s most powerful crime syndicates due to its grip on the cocaine import market.

It has extended its reach across all parts of the world, and it has long surpassed Sicily’s Cosa Nostra as Italy’s biggest mafia organisation.

Its presence in Germany was confirmed in 2007 when six people were killed outside a pizzeria in the town of Duisburg.

The victims were rival clan members killed as part of a long-running feud between families from the town of Calabria’s San Luca, home to the Giorgi family.

Late last month Italian authorities announced the arrest of a top boss of the ‘Ndrangheta mafia after almost five years on the run, who featured on the police’s list of most dangerous criminals.

Pasquale Bonavota, 49, had been wanted since November 2018, after escaping an arrest warrant for homicide and mafia association issued by a magistrate in Calabria, in southern Italy.

Bonavota is considered the brains of the ‘Ndrangheta’s Bonavota clan, which includes his two brothers, based in the Sant’Onofrio area of the Calabrian province of Vibo Valentia.

He was described as being a leader who “took the most important decisions” along with other top ‘Ndrangheta bosses, and “looked after the interests of the association in the Rome area and in the gambling sectors and drug trafficking”.

The arrest of Bonavota came three months after the high-profile capture of Sicilian mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro.

The Cosa Nostra boss had been a fugitive for 30 years.

Famed auction house Christie's is planning to sell off 700 jewels worth an estimated $150million that all belonged to the widow of a Nazi Party member who made his fortune buying out Jewish businesses.

 

Anthea Peers, the president of Christie's Europe, Middle East and Africa touted Heidi Horten's collection as 'one of the most beautifully curated' to 'ever come up in the jewelry world.' It includes a sapphire and diamond necklace worth $1.5million and a jadeite and diamond necklace valued at $16.5million.

 

But all of the jewelry was purchased using money her husband Helmut made off the backs of Jews in the Holocaust, when they were forced to sell their businesses — often at greatly reduced rates.

 

Helmut, who was once a member of the Nazi Party, used those businesses to build his eponymously named department store franchise.

 

By the time he died in 1987, Helmut left Heidi with nearly a $1billion inheritance.

 

According to David De Jong, author of 'Nazi Billionaires: The Dark Side of Germany's Wealthiest Dynasties,' Horten made his first business acquisition — a modest department store purchased from his Jewish employer in 1933.

 

The owner felt pressured to flee Germany as the Nazis came to power and sold his business at a fair price.

 

But from then on, journalist Stephanie Stephan said, 'Horten developed a routine for seizing Jewish businesses' in a process called Aryanization in which Jews were forced to sell their businesses to Aryans at reduced rates.

 

He would often buy businesses for just 65 percent of their value, De Jong explained to the New York Post, and 'Nazi authorities would be intermediaries in the sales.'

 

'They were coerced by authorities or by Horten himself,' he continued. 'They sold cheaply or lost their businesses.'

 

And following the purchases, De Jong said, Horten would take out advertisements in local newspapers proclaiming the businesses were now under Aryan ownership.

 

By 1937, Horten became a member of the Nazi Party.

'He was a sheer opportunist who saw an opportunity to grow from a small business owner to a department store mogul by the end of World War II.'

 

As part of his efforts to expand his empire, Stephan said, Horten sought Jewish-occupied businesses in German-occupied territories.

 

She said her father, Reinhold, had been working for Gerzon, the largest department store in Amsterdam when Horten 'used his influence with the German occupiers in the Netherlands to appoint a German administrator' who would steer the businesses to him.

 

'This man immediately fired my father because he opposed Aryanization and advised the owner not to sell,' she said.

 

Unfortunately, the Jewish business owner did not heed her father's advice, and sold his business after being pressured. He had planned to escape to America, but was soon captured by the Nazis.

 

'My father led a lawsuit against Horten, consulted lawyers and spent a lot of money in the process,' Stephan recounted.

 

'Unfortunately, since most of the judges were old Nazis, and Horten had a good relationship with them, my father lost the case.'

 

Helmut married Heidi in 1966 when she was 19 and he was around 50 years old.

 

Before she died last year, Heidi commissioned historian Peter Hoeres to research and write about her late husband's past.

 

In his report, Hoeres acknowledges Horten had exploited Jewish business owners, he had initially paid 'quite normal market prices' for their business.

 

He also cited several instances where Horten kept Jews on as wither employees or suppliers, and noted that although he was a member of the Nazi party, h was later expelled.

 

But, he also said his report surfaced information that Horten used forced labor at a Berlin company he purchased in 1943 that repaired airplanes.

 

Officials at Christie's acknowledged the painful history Horten's estate is built on in their listing for the auction, which is set to begin online on May 3 and in person in Geneva, Switzerland, on May 10.

 

'We are aware there is a painful history,' Peers told the New York Times. 'We weighed that up against various factors.'

 

In a statement to the Post, Guillaume Cerutti also acknowledged 'awareness of the well-documented business practices of Mrs. Horten's late first husband during the Nazi era when he purchased Jewish businesses sold under duress.'

 

But, he said, 'all proceeds from the sale will be directed to a foundation, which supports philanthropic causes, including health care, children's welfare and access to the arts.'

 

The website for the auction also said 'Christi's will make a significant contribution from its final proceeds of this auction to an organization that further advances Holocaust research and education.'

 

The controversy comes just months after a French court ordered Christie's London to return The Penitent Magdalene by Dutch artist Adriaen van der Werff to the heirs of its Jewish owner after it was discovered the 18th-century work was looted by Nazis.

 

The painting was originally owned by Lionel Hauser, an art collector and Jewish banker in Paris who reported in 1945 the Nazis confiscated his entire art collection — including The Penitent Magdalene — from his Paris home three years earlier.

 

The French government later included photographs of the stolen artwork in its official catalog of items looted by Nazis in the country.

 

But when Christie's sold the painting in 2005 for $115,185 its sale did not include a provenance history that mentioned Hauser's previous ownership.

 

Then in 2017 when the painting's current owner, an anonymous British collector, approached Christie's about selling the painting again its researchers discovered it once belonged to Hauser, at which point its legal team contacted his heirs and offered to split the proceeds from the sale between the heirs and the current owner.

 

It refused, however, to turn over the painting to Hauser's heirs, claiming there is a statute of limitations under British law since more than six years had passed since the painting was sold in 2005.

 

Hauser's family then sued Christie's London last June in Paris civil court, and in February a judge sided with them.

 

Christie's must now pay the family a $545 daily fine for any delays identifying the painting's current owner and location, as well as $10,900 in procedural fees.

Agree. I’ve been pulling back from everything global and even national, focusing entirely local and how I can make my little world better by shopping locally, volunteering and donating only locally from now on. In my heart I feel I’m should always have been doing this. I no longer follow sports, entertainment or news as it doesn’t enrich my life. I’ve been pulling back since 2016 and actually am happier.

A small university city in northern California is on edge after three people were stabbed within a week.

 

Two of the stabbings were fatal, killing a college student at the University of California, Davis and a homeless person.

 

In the most recent incident on Monday, a homeless woman was knifed several times through her tent.

 

No arrests have been made, and police in Davis have not said if they are searching for one or multiple suspects.

 

"People are scared," Mayor Will Arnold said at a press conference on Tuesday.

 

Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said "the attacks were particularly violent and brazen", adding that in the two most recent stabbings the "suspect didn't seem to care there were several witnesses".
