Ukrainian tanks fueled by Russian oil – German media

Kiev is “entirely dependent” on imports by now, Handelsblatt has reported

Ukraine uses Russian oil refined in Hungary and Türkiye to power its Western-supplied tanks and diesel generators, the German newspaper Handelsblatt reported on Monday.

Hungary’s oil and gas giant MOL has “doubled its sales to Ukraine in the past six months,” the business daily noted, citing Ukrainian customs officials. “Since MOL sources a large proportion of oil from Russia, Ukraine’s war machine should now be primarily fueled with it,” Handelsblatt concluded.

Though Hungary is a member of the EU, Budapest has secured a special waiver on importing crude oil from Russia via pipelines. Thereby unaffected by the bloc’s sanctions against Moscow, MOL can offer Kiev lower prices on refined petroleum products than many EU companies, who are losing market share in Ukraine as a result, according to the German outlet.

Prior to the current hostilities, Ukraine was able to cover about 30% of domestic needs with the Kremenchug refinery in the Poltava Region, which processed imports from Azerbaijan. It was reported “severely damaged” by Russian missile strikes in April 2022, and has managed to restore only limited capacity by now.

Even though Kiev depends entirely on outside imports, there are no fuel shortages in Ukraine, Handelsblatt noted. Even with the increased consumption by NATO-supplied tanks and armored vehicles, there seems to be plenty of diesel for generators the West sent last winter, to compensate for power disruptions due to Russian strikes on the electricity grid.

“Fuel deliveries are mainly made by rail via Poland,” Michal Paszkowski, an analyst at the Institute of Central Europe (IES) in Lublin, told the German newspaper. “The fuel comes from Slovakia and Hungary by pipeline, while from Romania the diesel is first shipped and then transported by rail.”

Last December, the US and its G7 allies established a price cap on Russian oil, prohibiting shipping and insurance companies from handling the cargo unless it is sold at or below $60 a barrel. Similar restrictions were introduced in February for Russian petroleum products.

Moscow has responded by outlawing the sale of oil and refined products to anyone who complies with the price cap and by halting the use of US dollars in oil sales. OPEC+ countries have ignored Washington’s pleas to compensate by increasing production.

Days after being threatened by $1.5 million fine, Temecula Valley school board adopts new curriculum

Temecula Valley Unified School District board members held an emergency meeting on Friday in light of a controversy involving rejected school curriculum and Governor Gavin Newsom.

The controversy, which stems from the material's mention of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay person to be elected into political office in California, and allegations that he was a pedophile.

Friday's meeting, which was called after the governor imposed a hefty fine on the district, saw the debacle finally reach an end, with board members voting to adopt the curriculum.

On Wednesday, the district voted 3-2 in favor of rejecting a state-endorsed social studies curriculum that mentions gay rights activist Harvey Milk, marking the second such occasion that the district denied the material.

Gov. Newsom issued a statement in which he announced a $1.5 million fine facing the district in what he called a "willful violation of the law." Additionally, he plans to supply the students with the new textbooks, and shouldering the district with the $1.6 million price tag.

In a press release, Congressman Darrell Issa told Newsom to "stop bullying Temecula" while also showing his support for parents and the school board.

"I stand with the parents of Temecula," he said in a statement. "The School Board is doing right by listening to concerned parents and educators and trying to work together to appropriately curate the studies that will be presented to the youngest of students."

TVUSD Board President Joseph Komrosky, who has been trading rhetorical jabs with the governor over recent weeks, issued a statement following the imposition of the fine, claiming that the district was "not done with its work on the curriculum for the 2023-2024 school year."

"Despite our continuing work and commitment to core values, Governor Newsom has taken unilateral action to intervene in the middle of our work without even contacting the school district first to understand what the school district may be further doing to meet all of the curriculum needs of our students. What he calls inaction we see as responsible considerations for all of our community's viewpoints as we come to a final decision and with time left to do so," said a statement from Komrosky. "To that end, I will be calling a Special Meeting of the Board for July 21, 2023, to consider a culmination of our work on this issue and the potential adoption of curriculum that meets all state and federal mandates. We do not appreciate Governor Newsom's effort to usurp local control and all that will apparently result from these tactics is a waste of the taxpayers' money. We sincerely hope he has a 14-day return policy with the publisher of the books he just purchased."

During Friday night's meeting, board members first voted on whether to keep the district's current 17-year-old curriculum in place, which included textbooks from 2006.

Finally, on the third vote in the last two months, board members voted to adopt the new curriculum.

They will still look into ways to adopt the new curriculum, but hope to implement different material to replace mention of Milk, while still meeting the state's mandates.

Following the decision, Governor Newsom issued a statement via Twitter, which read:

"Fortunately, now students will receive the basic materials needed to learn.

But this vote lays bare the school board majority's true motives. This has never been about parents' rights. It's not even about Harvey Milk — who appears nowhere in the textbook the board voted to censor. This is about extremists' desire to control information and censor the materials used to teach our children. It is history itself that offends them. This debate in Temecula is not about local control. It is a national ideological crusade that remains hellbent on silencing diverse communities and erasing our history.

Demagogues who whitewash history, censor books, and perpetuate justice never succeed. These board members still have a civil rights investigation to answer for."

Board members first voted to reject the curriculum back in April, immediately catching the attention of the governor, as well as creating divide amongst TVUSD parents about the extremely contentious topic.

Zelensky slams EU neighbors over grain exports

Keeping the ban on Ukrainian goods would be “un-European,” the country's president has declared

Eastern European nations that intend to preserve the current ban on imports of grain from Ukraine are violating the EU’s values, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has claimed.

The ban was imposed by the European Commission in May under pressure from Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, and Bulgaria, whichwere seeking to protect local farmers from Ukrainian competition. In a video address on Monday, Zelensky urged Brussels to let the restriction expire on September 15.

Any extension of the measure would be “unacceptable and obviously un-European,”the president declared. The EU is capable of “acting more rationally than closing this or that border for this or that good,” Zelensky said. Kiev wants a solution that “would correspond to the spirit of our Europe,” he added.

While Ukraine is not part of the EU it claims to share the bloc's values. Zelensky made the remarks following a government meeting on agricultural trade.

The EU initially lifted tariffs and quotas for Ukrainian exports in a bid to support the country in its armed conflict with Russia. However, the cheaper foodstuffs that flooded the bloc’s common market sent prices tumbling and caused mass protests by farmers in Eastern Europe. The five nations imposed unilateral restrictions before Brussels ended up conceding to their demands for a ban.

The campaign to keep the restrictions in place beyond the deadline was fueled by the collapse earlier this month of the Black Sea Initiative, a scheme that allowed Kiev to export its grain by commercial ships.

Russia pulled out of the arrangement a year after its signing, claiming that the deal had failed to live up to its humanitarian rationale. Russian officials also noted that the economic sanctions on Russian food and fertilizer exports were not lifted, contrary to what the UN, one of the deal’s mediators, had promised to Moscow.

Last week,Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmigalcited the end of the deal in criticizing Poland’s stance on the EU-backed import restrictions. The position was “unfriendly and populist” and would “severely impact global food security and Ukraine’s economy,” he complained on Twitter.

Polish Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski brushed off the criticism, stating that his nation was assisting Ukraine a lot. However, he added, Warsaw is guided by its own interests, including when it comes to helping Ukraine.

Aug 04, 2017 — Christopher Wray was confirmed last week by the Senate to be the new director of the FBI. The 50-year-old former federal prosecutor replaces James Comey, whom President Donald Trump fired in May as Comey led an investigation into possible Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Wray lives in Atlanta, Georgia but has ties to the Adirondacks. He spent the summers of his youth at his family’s camp near Keene Valley, hiking the High Peaks and fishing for trout. ''His father, Cecil Wray, is a former state Adirondack Park Agency Commissioner. ''

Looking out, the summit of the state’s highest peak, Mount Marcy, could be seen draped in clouds along with the rest of the High Peaks’ Great Range.

These mountains were the playground for Christopher and his younger sister Katie beginning in the early 1970s, their father explained.

“Our life in the summertime has sort of centered around the AuSable Club (in nearby St. Huberts), with so many activities for children,” Cecil said. “In the early years we were up here, they did a lot of strenuous hiking."

When asked about his son’s hiking experiences, Cecil got up from the table and went upstairs to retrieve a framed picture of a smiling 8-year-old Christopher, wearing a backpack and hiking boots, standing on the summit of Mount Marcy.

Each summer, Cecil said his son would climb a few more mountains as he tried to become an Adirondack 46er, a club for those who’ve scaled all 46 Adirondack peaks above 4,000 feet.

“He never made it all the way,” Cecil Wray said. “Neither did I. He made it further than I did. He’s probably in the low 30s. He was seriously peak-bagging. A lot of hiking, picnicking, fishing. He did a lot of fishing for a while.”

President Trump announced on June 7 he would nominate Christopher Wray to be FBI director. His father, a life-long Democrat, said he's had mixed feelings about the appointment.

“Obviously pride, because he’s done very well. And concern. Things in Washington are such a state of sort of chaos, we didn’t want him to get mixed up in something he’d regret. But he’s very thoughtful and careful, and I'm sure he would have figured out all the angles."

Wray's appointment has received strong bipartisan support. He's promised to be loyal to the Constitution and "not driven by anything other than the facts, the law, and the impartial pursuit of justice.”

Of course, you and I know why the “gods” didn’t want her—she was covered and protected by Jesus’ blood!

Ukraine wants its women back – deputy minister

Kiev is calling for refugees to return home as GDP slid almost 30% last year

Kiev encourages Ukrainian women who have fled the conflict-torn country to come back home, Deputy Economy Minister Tatyana Berezhnaya has said. Her comments came amid warnings that a disproportionate population exodus could have a devastating effect on the nation's economy.

Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg published on Monday, Berezhnaya said that “for me personally, victory is when Ukrainian families unite in Ukraine, not abroad.” The minister added that Kiev’s priority is “to make everything possible so that women with children come back to their husbands.” (You mean all those dead husbands you sent to war?)

Shortly after Russia sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022, Kiev announced a general mobilization, banning most men aged 18 to 60 from leaving the country. This led to a large gender gap among Ukrainianadult refugees, with at least70% of them being women, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Ukraine was already struggling with demographics even before the onset of the conflict, with afertility rate of just 1.16 as of 2021, and the large-scale hostilities have only exacerbated the situation.

According to Alexander Isakov of Bloomberg Economics, if Kiev fails topersuade 2.8 millionUkrainian working-age women to return, it couldcost the country 10%of its annual pre-conflict GDP. In the worst-case scenario, Ukraine will lose $20 billion a year, Bloomberg’s analysis claims.

Speaking to the outlet, Oleg Gorokhovsky, chief executive of Ukraine-based Monobank, stressed that women have a disproportionate impact on consumer demand as they are key decision-makers when it comes to buying household items.

“Without them, it will be super hard,” he added, commenting on prospects for the recovery of the Ukrainian economy that saw a 29.1% GDP decline in 2022. In 2023, it is projected to rebound by only 0.5%, according to the World Bank.

In total, according to UN data, more than six million Ukrainian refugees have fled the country, with themajority of them staying in European countries.

Berezhnaya’s comments contrast with the stance of authorities on the issue in the autumn of 2022. At the time, numerous Ukrainian officials urged their fellow citizens not to come back from abroad in winter, citing issues with power generation caused by recurring Russian strikes. Moscow intensified its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in response to a deadly bombing of the Crimean Bridge in October 2022.

Russia has major electronic warfare advantage – Ukraine

Kiev’s counteroffensive is being undermined by the disparity, a military spokesman has claimed

Moscow enjoys a significant advantage over Kiev in terms of electronic warfare, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yury Ignat has admitted. He cited the disparity as among the reasons why Ukraine is struggling in its long-anticipated counteroffensive.

Russian forces use electronic countermeasures to disable Ukrainian drones, an approach that Kiev wishes it could also adopt, Ignat said in a TV interview on Monday.

“You don’t need to shoot down a drone with missiles or guns. You can simply force it to go down, intercept it with electronic warfare,” the official stated.

“Russia has powerful systems that interfere with the actions of our defense forces. They have plenty of those systems. Ukraine has made some progress, but we started late,” he added.

The Russian Defense Ministry regularly reports the downing of Ukrainian drones without firing a shot. A raid on Crimea on Monday involved 17 UAVs, 14 of which were disabled by jamming, according to the Russian military.

Russian electronic warfare superiority has been widely acknowledged. A study released by the Royal United Services Institute in London last November estimated that by the summer of that year,Kiev had lost 90% of the thousands of drones it possessed at the beginningof hostilities in February. Once Russian electronic warfare infrastructure was deployed, the life expectancy of Ukrainian UAVs over the battlefield dwindled to three flights for quadcopters and six flights for fixed-wing aircraft, it said.

The issue was also highlighted at the weekend by the New York Times. Ukrainian electronic warfare troops find it difficult to jam Russia’s Lancet loitering munitions because they don’t know how exactly operators communicate with them, the newspaper reported. Meanwhile, theiropponents detect Ukrainian mobile phone signals, interfere with GPS geopositioning, and call artillery strikes on Starlink routers, which are essential for Ukrainian communications.

In a CNN interview this week, Ukrainian Defense Minister Aleksey Reznikov acknowledged that Kiev’s counteroffensive was lagging behind schedule, but insisted that otherwise it was proceeding as planned. Russian officials have said Ukraine has suffered tens of thousands of casualties for no tangible gains.

The deaths of John F Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy have raised quite a few questions, even to this day.

The couple died tragically (along with Carolyn's sister Lauren) in a plane crash on July 16, 1999. JFK Jr. was piloting the single-engine plane that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

The circumstances surrounding the flight were questionable as JFK Jr. had only 300 hours of flying experience when he took off from the Essex County airport in New Jersey on that cloudy, moonless night.

One of his flight instructors offered to accompany him, but Kennedy turned the offer down saying he “wanted to do it alone.”

Unfortunately, that mistake caused him, his wife and sister-in-law their lives.

To this day, some still believe various theories that argue he could still be alive, mostly based on the mysterious circumstances surrounding the plane crash and what happened after.

Here are 8 odd details about the deaths of JFK Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy:

JFK Jr.'s autopsy is full of holes.

The coroner’s report for JFK Jr.’s autopsy has quite a few omissions that could explain the story of his death. The autopsy is very confusing, even to the investigating team.

Jeff Guzzetti, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board was part of the team investigating the circumstances around the plane crash, and he said on Episode 12 of the “Fatal Voyage: The Death of JFK Jr.” podcast, “their work was meticulous — and exhaustive,” which was the opposite of the report completed by medical examiners at the time.

The coroner’s report is very simple, a mere one-page autopsy report suggesting an actual proper procedural autopsy was never completed.

The simple coroner's report also confirmed JFK Jr. was dead, but added nothing more. Colin McLaren, the host of the podcast is also an ex-homicide detective and mentioned that it sounds like a flimsy excuse and rush job for a coroner’s report because "that’s because it was."

The Kennedy Family wasn't concerned with the questionable investigation.

The Kennedy family allegedly accepted the report and didn't dive in deeper to have a more clear answer as to what happened in the crash and the condition of their bodies.

Many suggest this may be due to what is known as the Kennedy curse.

There is a long list of Kennedys that have either been severely injured or died prematurely. The so-called curse started in 1948 with Rosemary Kennedy's secret lobotomy all the way through to 2019 with Saoirse Roisin Kennedy Hill's overdose.

Over the years, 11 young or middle-aged Kennedys have died or experienced tragic accidents.

In JFK Jr.'s case, the tragic accident that led to his death was very sudden, as was the time between their deaths and the funeral.

The bodies of JFK Jr., Carolyn, and Lauren were recovered just five days after the crash, examined in one afternoon, and then cremated the same day on July 21, 1999. The coroner did report that all three victims "died instantly" and died from "multiple traumatic injuries".

The process was so sudden that by the day after the bodies were found, their ashes were scattered at sea.

Why would the family do that so quick and not question enough or ask for a more detailed autopsy?

Forensic examiner Cyril Wecht even recalled that the family requested that autopsies not be done in the first place. Maybe it's because they didn't want any information about JFK Jr. that the public didn't know of getting out and potentially corrupting the family, such as the depression, drugs, and violence problems the married couple allegedly faced.

There was crucial information missing in the toxicology report.

The toxicology report of JFK Jr. and his wife was missing quite a bit of information. The bodies of the couple were at the bottom of the ocean for four days after the crash.

The toxicologist report stated that JFK Jr. did not have drugs, alcohol or even prescription medication in his system, despite a recent foot injury.

Ex-homicide detective Colin McLaren explains the samples that were pulled to run the toxicology report were subsequently spoiled, and JFK Jr.’s body was cremated quickly, indicating the truth could have been intentionally hidden.

The weather was good, despite conflicting reports.

It is uncertain how JFK Jr. could be allowed to fly the Piper Saratoga II alone as he had only been practicing on it for 11 weeks. Like the Piper Malibu, it is a single-engine, retractable-gear, high-performance airplane. He was still getting used to it and, so far, all flights had been with an instructor and he only had 300 hours of flying experience.

He also allegedly took off from the Essex County airport in New Jersey to Martha's Vineyard for his cousin's wedding on a cloudy moonless night, however, according to UsWeekly's interview with John Hankey, writer, and director of the Kennedy documentary "Dark Legacy," there were no clouds.

In a public report from a man who studied the air conditions that fateful evening, there was allegedly no rain or fog. "It was fine. And in fact, people on the ground confirm this … So we can rule out any bad weather. There were no conditions that could have caused disorientation.”

The National Traffic Safety Board found lots of issues involving the legality of JFK Jr. flying the plane.

According to the official accident report issued by the Nation Traffic Safety Board, there were a lot of rules and steps that JFK Jr. bypassed. Despite his high celebrity and political status, it is concerning he was able to fly a plane in the first place.

Some evidence that the NTSB brought up in the case after his death was that there was no record that existed of JFK Jr. being a pilot, no record of a pilot using the airplane’s registration number, and no evidence of JFK Jr. receiving a weather briefing or filing a flight plan with any FAA FSS (Flight Service Station) for the flight in which he died in.

There also was no radio transmission during the flight as the last time he had contact with anyone on the ground was when the Saratoga tower cleared him for takeoff at 8:38 p.m.

Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy had a premonition two weeks before the crash.

Two weeks before the accident, Bessette-Kennedy allegedly pulled aside their longtime friend and pilot, Barry Stott, on the airport tarmac and said, “I’m secretly terrified of flying with John because he’s so easily distracted.”

She then expressed her concern about her husband's recklessness saying, “he doesn’t seem to take it seriously enough.”

Bessette-Kennedy trusted Scott as he ran an air charter service based at Martha’s Vineyard airport and piloted many flights with JFK Jr. while others were on board.

A theory claims that there was an explosive expert that was paid to plant a bomb on the plane that was set to go off as the plane descended to Martha's Vineyard, and that there was an "unusual broad debris field" as well.

According to author John Koerner, he found witnesses who can attest to seeing an explosion in the sky where the plane would have been at the time.

But why would anyone want to assassinate JFK Jr.? Well, at the time, JFK Jr. was reportedly “obsessed” with finding out who killed his father, John F. Kennedy.

According to reporter Leon Wagner, JFK Jr. was set to use his own money to reopen the investigation of his father's assassination, but after his own death, that never came to fruition.

The Pentagon took over reporting after news broke of JFK Jr.'s death.

The same day that bodies were found and the news of the crash was reported, the Pentagon took over the reporting.

According to Hankey in his interview with UsWeekly, that's a screaming sign: “They’re the military taking over the reporting, and in their taking over the reporting, they announced that there was no flight instructor on the plane. Well, they had no way of knowing so soon.”

The Eagle Nebula with X-ray Hot Stars

What do the famous Eagle Nebula star pillars look like in X-ray light? To find out, NASA's orbiting Chandra X-ray Observatory peered in and through these interstellar mountains of star formation. It was found that in M16 the dust pillars themselves do not emit many X-rays, but a lot of small-but-bright X-ray sources became evident. These sources are shown as bright dots on the featured image which is a composite of exposures from Chandra (X-rays), XMM (X-rays), JWST (infrared), Spitzer (infrared), Hubble (visible), and the VLT (visible). What stars produce these X-rays remains a topic of research, but some are hypothesized to be hot, recently-formed, low-mass stars, while others are thought to be hot, older, high-mass stars. These X-ray hot stars are scattered around the frame – the previously identified Evaporating Gaseous Globules (EGGS) seen in visible light are not currently hot enough to emit X-rays.
