The FBI is Reaching a Breaking Point as Public Trust in the Bureau Collapses

 

The United States is currently facing a serious ‘crisis of confidence’ in its governing institutions, according to Wall Street Journal columnist Dan Henninger.

 

The recent testimony of FBI Director Christopher Wray before Congress may have exacerbated the situation, possibly pushing the bureau to a breaking point.

 

Henninger’s column titled ‘The FBI Loses the Public’ delves into the declining trust that the American people have in institutions such as the FBI, with studies revealing that voter confidence in both the bureau and the DOJ has reached its lowest point.

 

Citing an NBC poll, the column highlights a staggering 15% drop in the public’s positive perception of the bureau over the past five years. Interestingly, this poll was conducted just before Wray’s contentious hearing before Congress and during a period when GOP lawmakers were calling for his resignation, expressing dissatisfaction with his leadership of the bureau.”

 

Thirty-seven percent of registered voters surveyed said they have a positive view of the FBI, while 35% said they have a negative view, according to the poll. Among GOP voters, just 17% have a positive view of the FBI, while 56% have a negative view.

 

“Conservatives no longer trust the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Liberals—or more precisely progressives—no longer trust the local police. We have a problem,” Henninger wrote.

 

“Confidence in U.S. institutions such as the FBI, Supreme Court and Congress has been on a steady decline since 2017 and is now reaching record lows. More broadly, less than a third of voters trust the federal government – a 20-year low…what’s going on now is different. The U.S. is already amid a crisis of confidence in what we call our governing institutions. That word, governing, is taken for granted, but it took a long time for governing to become a fact of daily life. Consider the opposite of governing elsewhere—mayhem, chaos, anarchy,” he continued.

 

“We may be inching closer than we imagine to the opposite of governing. Urban crime, mindless and random killings, tent-city homelessness, parents shouting at school boards, and the images of an FBI raid on a former president’s home. Instead of adjusting, many are turning away from the institutions that provide the bedrock of domestic tranquility,” he added.

 

In a heated House committee hearing earlier this month, Republican lawmakers subjected Wray to intense questioning regarding concerns over the politicization of his agency. They also raised issues about a recent federal court ruling that exposed alleged suppression of conservative free speech in connection with the Hunter Biden laptop story, the origins of COVID-19, and various other topics frequently discussed by Americans on social media.

Russian air defense forces intercepted a rocket of the US-made HIMARS multiple launch rocket system and downed 35 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles over the past day in the special military operation in Ukraine, Defense Ministry Spokesman Lieutenant-General Igor Konashenkov reported on Monday.

 

"Air defense capabilities intercepted a rocket of the HIMARS multiple launch rocket system. In addition, they destroyed 35 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles in areas near the settlements of Kolomyichikha, Kuzyomovka, Topolevka, Kremennaya and Kovalyovka in the Lugansk People’s Republic, Berezovoye and Belogorovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic, Zelyony Gai and Pyatikhatki in the Zaporozhye Region, Novaya Kakhovka and Sagi in the Kherson Region," the spokesman said.

Russian forces destroyed about 95 Ukrainian troops and a French-made artillery gun in the Kupyansk area over the past day, Konashenkov reported.

 

"In the Kupyansk direction, active actions by units of the western battlegroup, air strikes and artillery fire inflicted damage on Ukrainian manpower and equipment in areas near the settlements of Dvurechnaya, Sinkovka, Petropavlovka, Tabayevka and Peschanoye in the Kharkov Region. As many as 95 Ukrainian personnel, two armored combat vehicles, three pickup trucks and a French-made Caesar self-propelled artillery gun were destroyed," the spokesman said.

 

Russian forces also obliterated an ammunition depot of the Ukrainian army’s 103rd territorial defense brigade near the settlement of Krakhmalnoye in the Kharkov Region, the general reported.

Four More Texas Counties Declare Invasion At Southern Border

 

The judges and commissioners of four more Texas counties have declared an invasion at the southern border: Frio, Karnes, La Salle and Medina.

 

The judges of these counties also joined a new coalition led by newly elected Atascosa County Judge Weldon Cude in an effort to urge other counties to declare an invasion and defend the sovereignty of Texas.

 

Cude was among 87 judges who were newly elected in November. Prior to his election, Atascosa County was among the first to issue a disaster declaration in 2021 and declared an invasion in 2022.

 

When Cude came into office in January, he couldn’t understand why more counties hadn’t declared an invasion, he told The Center Square in an exclusive interview.

 

“Why wouldn’t you declare an invasion?” Cude asked. “If you have people from all over the world coming into your county by bus, plane, or smuggling people and drugs, why wouldn’t you declare an invasion?

 

“It’s important when you have millions coming across your southern border. What is it – if it isn’t an invasion?”

 

Prior to being elected county judge, Cude was elected to serve for six terms as county commissioner representing a majority Hispanic population in a rural area south of San Antonio that largely votes Republican.

 

At an orientation for judges in February, he met newly elected Kinney County Judge John Paul Schuster, who described the crisis his county was facing. He and Schuster then started reaching out to other judges, and now four more counties have declared an invasion.

 

They also formed a coalition with other judges in contiguous counties “to promote the common goal of safety, security, and well-being of their residents” and to “support each other to stop the ongoing crisis by all legal means.”

 

With the signing of a new resolution, the judges and commissioners of Frio, Karnes, La Salle and Medina declared an invasion.

 

The movement to declare an invasion was led by Kinney County, which first issued a disaster declaration April 21, 2021. Since then, over 50 counties have issued disaster declarations citing the border crisis.

Protests escalate after reasonableness standard passes Knesset vote

 

On Monday morning, the Brothers in Arms protest group gathered outside the Knesset, linking arms to form a wall blocking the entrance.

 

Protesters blocked Begin Highway in Jerusalem and Kaplan Street in Tel Aviv on Monday after the reasonableness standard bill passed into law, according to Israel Police.

 

Police reported that protesters have broken onto the road, endangering themselves and other road users. Police forces arrived at the scene to disperse the offenders and reopen the road, which was blocked in both directions.

 

Police have elaborated on road blockages as a result of the demonstrations against the judicial reform. Kaplan Street was blocked from Ibn Gvirol Street to Menachem Begin Street in both directions. The Gesher HaShalom ramps were closed to the north and south (it will not be possible to go down Route 20). The Yigal Alon-HaShalom intersection is blocked to the west. Highway 20 (Ayalon) is closed at the entrances to the HaShalom interchange in both directions. Highway 2 at the Yanai interchange is closed in both directions.

Road blockages

 

Dozens of protesters have also blocked the Ayalon North lanes near the Arlozorov intersections and the HaHalacha Junction.

 

Approximately 2,000 protesters have gathered to demonstrate at the Karkur Junction. Police officers are on the scene trying to prevent the intersection from being blocked.

 

Due to a protest and march occurring in Be'er Sheva on Yitzhack Rager Boulevard, traffic has been gradually restricted in both directions.

 

Menachem Begin Street has now been reopened to vehicle traffic in both directions. According to the police, all the objects that were on the site have been repelled and removed from the lane by the police forces that operated there, using means for dispersing public disturbances.

 

During the removal of the objects, several rioters in the area began throwing objects toward the police officers who were working to clear the traffic lane. One individual was arrested on the scene for disorderly conduct.

 

About 1,000 protesters blocked Highway 531, heading west towards Kfar Malal.

 

The police arrested a resident of one of the settlements in the Sharon region for hitting protesters at the Malal Junction on Highway 531. Israeli police initiated extensive searches for the suspect, a man in his 20s, who lightly injured 3 protesters with his vehicle.

Leftist Brazilian President Lula Signs Decree to Restrict Gun Ownership

 

Brazil’s left-wing President Lula da Silva has signed a decree imposing restrictions on gun ownership, reversing his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro’s policy of encouraging citizens to own firearms in the crime-ridden country.

 

“We will continue to fight for fewer weapons in our country. Only the police and the army must be well-armed,” President Lula said. He argued that the government “cannot allow gun arsenals to be in the people’s hands.”

 

Friday’s presidential decree is a part of a move by the Socialist Lula to undo the legacy of President Bolsonaro. According to a 2022 report, over a million Brazilians own guns. This is three times higher than the number of legal gun owners before Bolsonaro came to power in 2019.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed a decree Friday tightening restrictions on civilian access to guns in Brazil, in a move aimed at reversing the pro-firearms policies of his right-wing predecessor Jair Bolsonaro.

 

The decree reduces the number of guns civilians can possess for personal safety from four to two, reduces the allowed ammunition for each gun from 200 rounds to 50 and requires documentation proving the need to hold the weapons.

 

It also bars civilians from owning 9 mm pistols, restricting them to members of the police and military.

 

“It’s one thing for the regular citizen to have a gun at home for his protection, as a guarantee, because some people think this is safety. Let them have it. But we cannot allow gun arsenals to be in the people’s hands,” Lula said Friday during a signing ceremony.

 

During Bolsonaro’s presidency from 2019 through 2022, the former president had said “good citizens” should be entitled to protect their families and their assets, and loosened rules on the possession of guns and ammunition. Though Brazil has no constitutional right to bear arms, Bolsonaro argued that “an armed populace will never be enslaved.”

Without this separation of population dynamics from WHO public-health policy, the Vatican would have found it much more difficult to subsequently manipulate governments on such issues as family planning and abortion. National leaders would have been able to refer to the international consensus, as demonstrated by WHO policy. WHO, they could have insisted, has determined that family planning and abortion – like clean water, good nutrition, and immunizations – are necessary to protect public health.

 

Professor Siegel decided to speak out on the subject. As he was involved in the WHO at an early stage, his personal experience provides ample evidence that the Vatican influenced WHO policy development from the outset, during the early period of the Interim Commission in 1946. In its 63-year history, this international health body has had a deplorable record in family planning. Its commitment has been minuscule, and even today family planning accounts for only a tiny fraction of its budget.

 

Professor Siegel joined the World Health Organization in 1946, when it was still in its formative stages – under the umbrella of the United Nations, created just the year before. Because of his earlier work in North America and the Middle East, he was asked, in effect, to be one of WHO's "founding fathers". So he came on board on the senior staff of the Interim Commission. Dr. Brock Chisholm of Canada was the Executive Director of the Commission, which set up the permanent organization with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Chisholm was chosen to be WHO's first Director General."

"MSP Underwater Recovery Unit divers made the recovery after the victim’s body was located by a Massachusetts Environmental Police Officers deploying side-scan sonar from a boat," police stated.

 

The recovery was made around 100 feet from shore, where water was around eight feet in depth.

 

According to the Daily Mail, the 911 call and dispatch address for the incident was the Obama’s Martha’s Vineyard home. It is unclear whether the former president was staying at the estate at the time.

 

Police responded to the pond in the area of Turkeyland Cove at around 7:46 pm to a report of a male paddleboarder who had gone into the water. The man appeared to briefly struggle to stay on the surface, and then went under and did not resurface, police said.

 

Another paddleboarder had been with the male at the time and saw him go under the water.

 

Numerous agencies including Edgartown Fire and all island fire departments, local police, State Police patrols, Air Wing, and detectives, the Dukes County Sheriff’s Department, and the Coast Guard.

 

Searches continued through the night, but divers were unsuccessful. A pause was issued to allow dive teams, flight crews, and other responders to re-equip and assess next steps. The search was continued on Monday morning.

Disruption of transnational migrant smuggling network leads to 62 arrests

 

The trafficking network is estimated to have generated some EUR 45 million in illicit gains

 

An operation targeting a transnational criminal network smuggling Cuban nationals to the European Union has led to the arrest of 62 individuals, including 25 Cubans.

 

The investigation, coordinated by INTERPOL and Europol, was launched in October 2021 after an increased number of Cuban citizens attempting to enter Europe with fake documents was reported by Finland, Greece, North Macedonia and Serbia.

 

For a payment of around EUR 9,000 the network would arrange the trip, transfers and provide the falsified documentation. The migrants would fly from Cuba to Serbia, which until recently did not require a visa, before they were smuggled into Greece from where they were flown into Spain.

 

It is estimated some 5,000 Cuban nationals were successfully smuggled into the EU, generating a profit of around EUR 45 million.

 

The first in a series of joint operational meetings was hosted by INTERPOL at its General Secretariat headquarters in Lyon in March 2022.

 

The investigation revealed a complex criminal infrastructure set up in cities across Greece, Serbia and Spain.

 

On a day of action across the three countries in June, as well as making 26 arrests, police also recovered hundreds of fake and genuine documents and around EUR 100,000 in cash.

 

In addition, 18 pieces of real estate and 133 vehicles were seized and 144 bank accounts frozen.

 

INTERPOL and Europol also deployed specialists to provide on the ground support with intelligence analysis and cross match reports.

Changing routes and sexual exploitation

 

Initially the Cuban nationals flew commercially direct to Russia where smugglers offered the option to either irregularly cross the Russian-Finnish border to then enter the EU, or fly to Serbia to continue their journey into Central or Southern Europe.

 

However, following the start of the conflict in Ukraine, the route was changed with Cubans instead flown via Germany to Serbia. The criminal networks would then facilitate irregular entry into Greece and North Macedonia, often forcing groups of migrants to walk in the dark for hours with no supplies.

 

Some of the most vulnerable migrants, which included minors, were subjected to scams, robberies and extortion, with some women transferred to other criminal groups for sexual exploitation.

 

Investigations are continuing and further arrests are expected.

The recent reports by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the media of the heatwave in Europe have been criticized for scaremongering and adding to the controversy that surrounds climate change. On July 13, the ESA issued a report claiming that temperatures across the south of Europe could reach an unbelievable 48° Celsius (118°F) and the report was trumpeted by media outlets. The problem is that the ESA reported ground surface temperatures, but the standard for reporting the weather to the public is to record air temperatures at two meters above ground level, which is much cooler than temperatures recorded at the ground surface level. Careful readers were able to debunk the false reports.

The Etymology of “Yahweh”

This is an educational dive into the way modern Christianity has been infiltrated and influenced by non-Christian parties, in this particular case, by a pair of Enlightenment-era etymologists.

 

Have you ever heard someone refer to God as “Yahweh”? That’s just the English for His revealed name in the OT, right? That must mean it’s the ancient Christian practice!

 

Let’s look at the genealogy of this one, because it is wild. N.b. this thread is not about “the secret name of God,” or YHWH, or Jehovah, or vowel pointing, or any other such debate. It is solely focused how & when the six letters “Yahweh” came into common use in English.

 

A friend asked this week whether a CPH commentary that insists on translating Lord as “Yahweh” is subversive. My first instinct was “yes, absolutely.” But what do I know? So I turned next to Google Ngrams, which searches over 8M books going back centuries. Ngrams shows just what I imagined: the term was invented in the last two centuries, and took off in popularity very recently. Neither of these are what you want to see when you’re considering sound doctrine. An unchanging God does not engender fickle beliefs.

 

Ngrams also lets you drill down to any date range to see precisely which hits are represented on the graph. After some spelunking, metadata errors, lots more googling, and hours of reading original source material, here is how we were tricked into saying “Yahweh”.

 

For thousands of years, there has been debate over the pronunciation of “YHWH”–the name “I am” which God gave Himself from the burning bush in Exodus 3. Written Hebrew of course has no vowels, so with only the text, there are numerous possibilities for any consonant set. “Jehovah” itself is one such made-up word, which deliberately transposes the vowel sounds from “Adonai” onto the consonants in “YHWH”. While the intention at the time was pious, it is highly relevant that no such thing was done in Jesus’ day.

 

The Greek Septuagint (LXX) is the Old Testament that was commonly used in Jesus’ day. Hebrew was already a dead language in the 1st century, meaning it was no longer spoken conversationally and most couldn’t read it. Jesus quotes the LXX, as does the NT hundreds of times.

 

So it is relevant how the LXX treats the YHWH “I am”. What we find is that the word is simply and naturally translated “ego eimi”–”I am”. The 4th century Latin Vulgate also faithfully translates it simply as “ego sum”. Zero interest in it as a proper name, vs. a declaration.

 

This fact is crucial to the question because it ties directly to Christ’s Divinity. When Jesus said, “Before Abraham was I am” He said ego eimi, and the jews tried to murder Him on the spot for blasphemy. He didn’t use some special Hebrew utterance, but “I am”–God’s Name.

 

For over 14 centuries, every Christian believed that God’s revealed name to Moses was “I am”.

 

I’m neither a theologian nor an etymologist. But I am an exemplaragnitorian with a respectable track record for correctly sniffing out both bullshit and sulfur. And all the fake Hebrewisms that some Christians like to sling around with pious abandon have always struck me as redolent of both, so it doesn’t surprise me in the slightest to learn that “Yahweh” is an Enlightenment-era construction.

Over the last generation, most American clerics have switched to pronouncing the divine name as Yahweh. I want to make the case that this is dishonest at several levels. First, few can even give a cogent summary of the reasons why Yahweh is to be preferred to Jehovah even though willing to disrupt the tradition over it. I am confident of this because even at the august Westminster Seminary, I caught three professors in the Hebrew OT department out of class and asked why we should say Yahweh. Two of them waved me off to “look it up.” The third, the only one to have an earned PhD from Harvard, said that Jehovah was an entirely possible way the tetragrammaton was pronounced; he used Yahweh as a disruptive mechanism, to shake people out of their comfort zone.

Companies Lay Off Chief Diversity Officers after the Supreme Court Overturned Affirmative Action

 

Since last year, thousands of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) officers workers have been laid off. Less than half the companies in the S&P 500 employed chief diversity officers in 2018, but by 2022, 75% of those companies had created a position. According to the Wall Street Journal, when the Supreme Court overturned affirmative action for college admissions in June, companies started anticipating spillover legal action might impact them, and they are laying off DEI workers en masse. We have reported before that DEI is tied to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals that can be enforced through restrictions or denial of financial and insurance services.

Last week, Trump-appointed US District Judge Clifton Corker struck down the Department of Agriculture and Small Business Administration’s race-based contracting schemes favoring minority-owned businesses, citing the Supreme Court’s recent ruling gutting affirmative action. Richard Hanania pointed out that now in the 6th Circuit, the only way to have race preferences is under very narrow circumstances by showing past discrimination by the specific government agency and that the discrimination was intentional against the group in question. Almost nothing can meet this standard.

Texas shows no sign of complying with Justice's Monday deadline to remove buoy immigration barriers

 

Several Democratic lawmakers have objected to Texas' use of buoys as a barrier saying they create "serious risks" to public safety and the environment.

 

In a letter sent last week, the agency has given Abbott and intern state Attorney General xxx until 2 p.m Monday to comply, saying the buoys create “serious risks” to public safety and the environment and violate federal law.
