Review: The Nutritional Management of Multiple Sclerosis With Propionate (potential cure: Sodium propionate!)

 

Abstract

Over the last 15 years there has been an accumulation of data supporting the concept of a gut-brain axis whereby dysbiosis of the gut microbiota can impact neurological function. Such dysbiosis has been suggested as a possible environmental exposure triggering multiple sclerosis (MS). Dysbiosis has been consistently shown to result in a reduction in short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) producing bacteria and a reduction in stool and plasma levels of propionate has been shown for MS patients independent of disease stage and in different geographies. A wealth of evidence supports the action of propionate on T-cell activity, resulting in decreased T-helper cell 1 (Th1) and T-helper cell 17 (Th17) numbers/activity and increased regulatory T cell (Treg cell) numbers/activity and an overall anti-inflammatory profile. These different T-cell populations play various roles in the pathophysiology of MS. A recent clinical study in MS patients demonstrated that supplementation of propionate reduces the annual relapse rate and slows disease progression. This review discusses this data and the relevant mechanistic background and discusses whether taming of the overactive immune system in MS is likely to allow easier bacterial and viral infection.

 

MS and the Gut-Brain Axis

Evidence of the gross pathophysiological effect of the gut content that may apply to MS has been demonstrated through fecal transplant studies.

Propionate Deficiency in MS Patients

Five studies show that patients with MS have low levels of propionate in both feces and plasma (15–19).All 5 studies show that propionate levels in both feces and plasma are lower than those of healthy controls but there is less certainty for the other SCFAs, acetate and butyrate. Zeng et al. reported reduced fecal levels of all SCFAs in Chinese patients with MS compared to healthy controls (15). Interestingly the microbiota profile and level of SCFAs in feces were not affected by dietary and health habits (e.g., vegetarianism, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol intake), indicating that this pattern of dysbiosis may be a result of MS itself.

Park et al. assessed plasma SCFA levels in US patients with chronic MS (secondary progressive disease) and found significant reductions in acetate, propionate and butyrate (18). Duscha et al. measured SCFA levels in German patients with relapsing remitting MS (RRMS) and secondary progressive MS (SPMS) and found decreased propionate in plasma and feces for both MS subtypes, but no differences in butyrate and acetate (16). The findings between the two studies may be discordant with regards to acetate and butyrate levels due to the differences in the MS subtypes studied. However, both studies support a deficiency in propionate and a sub-analysis by Duscha et al. confirms that a propionate deficiency exists in both RRMS and SPMS.

Takewaki et al. studied 12 patients with RRMS and 9 patients with SPMS and showed reduced acetate, propionate and butyrate in the feces of RRMS patients, and a non-statistically significant reduction in SPMS patients (17). Table 2 presents the outcomes of SCFA measurements in MS studies.

Recently, Trend et al. have demonstrated a small but statistically significant reduction in propionate amongst patients with MS, without reductions in butyrate and acetate (19).

Contradictory data has come from the recent study of 58 patients with MS (a mix of RRMS and clinically isolated syndrome) and 50 healthy controls. Here, the serum level of acetate was significantly lower in MS patients but propionate and butyrate levels were similar in patients with MS and healthy controls (20).

Across the studies, there is a clear reduction in propionate levels in feces and plasma in patients with MS, independent of the subtype of MS and across different populations. These studies therefore provide complementary and consistent evidence that patients with MS have a dysbiosis leading to reduced numbers of SCFA producing bacteria which results in reduced levels of propionate across different geographies and disease forms.

  1. It is just a still photo and not a live video conference

  3. He talks about other people arrested and not himself

Footage shows a conspiracy theorist ranting about fears of a β€˜15-minute city’ at a council meeting in Western Australia.

 

A conspiracy theorist has hijacked a council meeting in Western Australia, claiming the council are going to β€œcut off” residents and β€œput a chip” in their arms in a rant about 15-minute cities.

 

Jeff Pryce from Carlisle, Perth, delivered an impassioned two-minute speech about 15-minute-cities, which conspiracists believe to be a plot by governments to keep people locked down, during public statement time at a Victoria Park Council meeting on August 15.

 

β€œYou’re going to shut us down, you’re going to put a chip in our arm, we’re going to move around on a point system, you’re going to take away our cars, they’re all going to be electric so they can always cut your power off whenever they want,” he told the council.

 

During the rant, Mr Pryce claimed the move towards β€œsmart metres”, β€œsmart water” and β€œdigital money” will allow governments to cut off residents if they step out of line in β€œanyway shape or form”.

 

β€œYou will be born in a 15-minute city, you will die in a 15-minute city, along with your families and their kids and their kids.”

 

He claimed the World Economic Forum and β€œNew World Order” were the masterminds behind the move, which will see all travel come to an end in the next seven years to resctict people’s movement.

 

β€œThere will be no travel come 2030, no planes, no ships, you will be locked down and shut down, all through climate change … This what they’re bringing in and they’re bringing it in around the world and people [have] got to wake up.”

 

Mr Pryce concluded his rant by telling councillors they should feel ashamed of themselves, despite the Mayor earlier confirming council has no powers to prohibit people from moving outside the boundaries of the local government area.

 

β€œYou’re going to lock your own people down and sit at home and feel good about it. Shame on you, shame on you all, how can you sleep,” he said before he was cut off when his allotted two minutes came to an end.

 

Fifteen-minute cities are part of the wider β€œSmart City” concept to make cities more liveable by providing residents with basic amenities like shops, parks, cafes, healthcare and schools within a 15-minute radius by bike or foot.

 

The idea was coined by Franco-Colombian urbanist Carlos Moreno, who argues β€œour sense of time is warped” because of auburn sprawl and advocates more services should be made available closer to where people live.

 

β€œWe must make urban life more pleasant, agile, healthy, and flexible,” Mr Moreno told Forbesin February.

 

However, the concept has given rise to conspiracy theories that claim the scheme will restrict residents’ movements and see them fined for leaving their local districts.

 

Some believe the plan is to restrict movement within their suburb is part of a broader β€œclimate lockdown”.

 

β€œYou’re going to have to apply for a f***ing permit to leave your zone,” said one TikToker from Britain, where protests were held earlier this year to oppose a 15-minute city proposals in Oxford.

Please allow anon to expand on this sentiment. We ended up here because we are free thinkers, contrarians, pattern recognizing, puzzle solvers. When Q was posting we had a clear job to do and service to provide. Camaraderie was high and the anons heavily outweighed the shills on active posts. In the years since we have lost jobs, family, friends, entire support networks, yet we endure. We have attended protests, ran for office, organized the spread of the truth. All while the system that we have paid into and built, that was meant to support us, has been actively attempting to destroy us. We cannot earn a living, we cannot pay our bills, we cannot feed our children. Yet we endure. They are trying to trap us into a reaction every day, on every screen, with every word and look. They want to break us so they have a reason to extinct us. Yet we endure. We know that we are required for the phase of mass awakening, we are ready to serve, we are so desperate to help our fellow man and collectively evolve our civilization. A yearning for a Q post is a desire for progress, and for meaning in the trenches inside enemy lines.
