DOJ Files Lawsuit Against SpaceX for Not Hiring Refugees

 

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a lawsuit against Elon Muskโ€™s company, SpaceX, claiming their hiring policies discriminate against refugees and asylees.

 

The lawsuit, filed on Thursday, alleges that โ€œfrom at least September 2018 to May 2022, SpaceX routinely discouraged asylees and refugees from applying and refused to hire or consider them, because of their citizenship status, in violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).โ€

 

The Department of Justice said in a press release, โ€œIn job postings and public statements over several years, SpaceX wrongly claimed that under federal regulations known as โ€˜export control laws,โ€™ SpaceX could hire only U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, sometimes referred to as โ€˜green card holders.'โ€

 

โ€œExport control laws impose no such hiring restrictions,โ€ the press release continued. โ€œMoreover, asyleesโ€™ and refugeesโ€™ permission to live and work in the United States does not expire, and they stand on equal footing with U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents under export control laws. Under these laws, companies like SpaceX can hire asylees and refugees for the same positions they would hire U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents. And once hired, asylees and refugees can access export-controlled information and materials without additional government approval, just like U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents.โ€

 

The agency claims that SpaceX โ€œdiscouraged asylees and refugees from applying for open positions, through public announcements, job applications and other online recruiting communications that excluded asylees and refugees,โ€ โ€œfailed to fairly consider applications submitted by asylees and refugees,โ€ and โ€œrefused to hire qualified asylee and refugee applicants and repeatedly rejected asylee and refugee applicants because of their citizenship status.โ€

 

The press release states, โ€œSpaceX hired only U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, from September 2018 to September 2020.โ€

Despite years of Biden family and media disinformation, we are finally learning that Joe Biden really did fire Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin for looking into state corruption involving the oil company Burisma and Hunter Bidenโ€”and ultimately Joe Biden himself.

 

As Vice President, Biden, in his own words, bragged that he had threatened to cancel the deliverance of American foreign aid to Ukraine unless Shokin was dismissed.

 

So what is the Congress to do nowโ€”un-impeach and exonerate an innocent impeached Donald Trump, and instead impeach a guilty Biden for essentially the same allegations?

Review: The Nutritional Management of Multiple Sclerosis With Propionate

 

Abstract

Over the last 15 years there has been an accumulation of data supporting the concept of a gut-brain axis whereby dysbiosis of the gut microbiota can impact neurological function. Such dysbiosis has been suggested as a possible environmental exposure triggering multiple sclerosis (MS). Dysbiosis has been consistently shown to result in a reduction in short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) producing bacteria and a reduction in stool and plasma levels of propionate has been shown for MS patients independent of disease stage and in different geographies. A wealth of evidence supports the action of propionate on T-cell activity, resulting in decreased T-helper cell 1 (Th1) and T-helper cell 17 (Th17) numbers/activity and increased regulatory T cell (Treg cell) numbers/activity and an overall anti-inflammatory profile. These different T-cell populations play various roles in the pathophysiology of MS. A recent clinical study in MS patients demonstrated that supplementation of propionate reduces the annual relapse rate and slows disease progression. This review discusses this data and the relevant mechanistic background and discusses whether taming of the overactive immune system in MS is likely to allow easier bacterial and viral infection.

 

MS and the Gut-Brain Axis

Evidence of the gross pathophysiological effect of the gut content that may apply to MS has been demonstrated through fecal transplant studies.

Propionate Deficiency in MS Patients

Five studies show that patients with MS have low levels of propionate in both feces and plasma (15โ€“19).All 5 studies show that propionate levels in both feces and plasma are lower than those of healthy controls but there is less certainty for the other SCFAs, acetate and butyrate. Zeng et al. reported reduced fecal levels of all SCFAs in Chinese patients with MS compared to healthy controls (15). Interestingly the microbiota profile and level of SCFAs in feces were not affected by dietary and health habits (e.g., vegetarianism, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol intake), indicating that this pattern of dysbiosis may be a result of MS itself.

Park et al. assessed plasma SCFA levels in US patients with chronic MS (secondary progressive disease) and found significant reductions in acetate, propionate and butyrate (18). Duscha et al. measured SCFA levels in German patients with relapsing remitting MS (RRMS) and secondary progressive MS (SPMS) and found decreased propionate in plasma and feces for both MS subtypes, but no differences in butyrate and acetate (16). The findings between the two studies may be discordant with regards to acetate and butyrate levels due to the differences in the MS subtypes studied. However, both studies support a deficiency in propionate and a sub-analysis by Duscha et al. confirms that a propionate deficiency exists in both RRMS and SPMS.

Takewaki et al. studied 12 patients with RRMS and 9 patients with SPMS and showed reduced acetate, propionate and butyrate in the feces of RRMS patients, and a non-statistically significant reduction in SPMS patients (17). Table 2 presents the outcomes of SCFA measurements in MS studies.

Recently, Trend et al. have demonstrated a small but statistically significant reduction in propionate amongst patients with MS, without reductions in butyrate and acetate (19).

Contradictory data has come from the recent study of 58 patients with MS (a mix of RRMS and clinically isolated syndrome) and 50 healthy controls. Here, the serum level of acetate was significantly lower in MS patients but propionate and butyrate levels were similar in patients with MS and healthy controls (20).

Across the studies, there is a clear reduction in propionate levels in feces and plasma in patients with MS, independent of the subtype of MS and across different populations. White House Tells Ukraine That Congress Will Back More War Spending

 

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Tuesday that the US has expressed to Ukraine and European allies that Congress will back the new spending on the war in Ukraine that President Biden has requested despite โ€œdissonantโ€ voices among Republicans.

 

An ambassador from an unnamed European country confirmed to Axios that his government had received that message from the US in recent days. Sullivan noted in his comments that there are still โ€œstrongโ€ voices โ€œin key leadership positionsโ€ in the Republican Party in Congress who favor continuing to fund the proxy war against Russia.

 

A House GOP leadership aide told Axios that the new Ukraine spending would likely pass if brought to a vote, but House Speaker Kevin McCarthy might have difficulty bringing it to a floor for a vote due to growing opposition. โ€œI just donโ€™t see that support in the House [Republican] conference right now โ€ฆ We are well beyond just the Freedom Caucus talking about this,โ€ the aide said.

 

Last week, Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD), co-chair of the congressional Ukraine Caucus, said he would not support new spending on the war in Ukraine that included anything other than military aid and didnโ€™t establish an inspector general. He also said the counteroffensive โ€œfailedโ€ and called for the US to push Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to pursue peace talks. Harris is also a member of the Freedom Caucus but has been a staunch supporter of the war until now.

 

President Biden requested an additional $24 billion in the new Ukraine package, which would bring total spending on the war to about $137 billion if authorized. Bidenโ€™s request came after a CNN poll found 55% of Americans are opposed to Congress authorizing more spending on the conflict.

The Department of Justice announced Thursday afternoon federal prosecutors have filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk's SpaceX, alleging discrimination in hiring practices.

 

"The Justice Department filed a lawsuit today against Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) for discriminating against asylees and refugees in hiring. The lawsuit alleges that, from at least September 2018 to May 2022, SpaceX routinely discouraged asylees and refugees from applying and refused to hire or consider them, because of their citizenship status, in violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA)," DOJ released Thursday. "SpaceX discouraged asylees and refugees from applying for open positions, through public announcements, job applications and other online recruiting communications that excluded asylees and refugees. SpaceX failed to fairly consider applications submitted by asylees and refugees. SpaceX refused to hire qualified asylee and refugee applicants and repeatedly rejected asylee and refugee applicants because of their citizenship status. SpaceX hired only U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, from September 2018 to September 2020."

 

In other words, SpaceX hired Americans and DOJ is unhappy about it.

 

"The United States seeks fair consideration and back pay for asylees and refugees who were deterred or denied employment at SpaceX due to the alleged discrimination. The United States also seeks civil penalties in an amount to be determined by the court and policy changes to ensure it complies with the INAโ€™s nondiscrimination mandate going forward," DOJ continues.

I always figured that Jim Carry was an anon.

It was like he was always here, in the early days.

A new poll has revealed the top reasons why over half the marriages in the United States result in divorce.

 

According to a survey done by Forbes Advisor, the top reasons married couples choose to divorce each other are due to lack of family support, infidelity, and compatibility.

 

The survey polled 1,000 Americans who are divorced or in the process of getting a divorce.

 

34% of respondents said their marriage was ended due to an affair and 21% of survey respondents said disapproval of a spouse by family or friends was a sign the marriage was at risk.

 

Furthermore, 59% of people who divorced within the first year of being married said the reasoning was due to lack of compatibility.

 

The data also showed a staggering 63% of respondents claiming if they had a better understanding of the commitment of marriage before going through with it they could have saved their partnership.

 

Another eye opening response was 56% of participants said if they had a better understanding of their significant others values and morals it could have helped them avoid divorce.

 

According to Lisa Marie Bobby, psychologist and founder of Growing Self Counseling and Coaching in Denver, couples focus too much on sexual chemistry instead of compatibility.

 

โ€œWhen people are dating and figuring out who they want to be with, chemistry is one part of that puzzle,โ€ she said. โ€œBut you should be thinking more about: Is this person emotionally safe? Are they honest? Are they reliable? Are they a good friend? Are they here for me?โ€

 

The survey also revealed 44% of participants said waiting to start a family could have saved their marriage.

As flames tore through a West Maui neighborhood, car after car of fleeing residents headed for the only paved road out of town in a desperate race for safety. And car after car was turned back toward the rapidly spreading wildfire by a barricade blocking access to Highway 30. One family swerved around the barricade and was safe in a nearby town 48 minutes later, another drove their four-wheel-drive car down a dirt road to escape. One man took a dirt road uphill, climbing above the fire and watching as Lahaina burned. He later picked his way through the flames, smoke and rubble to pull survivors to safety.

Without further ado, here are The Dossierโ€™s grades from last nightโ€™s first of the 2024 Republican Party presidential debates:

 

Fox News: F

Fox did a great job wasting all of our time with questions about the aliens and the climate hoax. They completed ignored anything of consequence to Americans. Truly a pathetic display. Fox is completely ideologically captured โ€”to the extent that they are now running China-owned TikTok ads during American debates โ€” and afraid to lose what is left of their advertisers.

 

Former Vice President Mike Pence: C+

Pence stole a lot of valuable air time, but never did anything particularly relevant with it. He quoted the Bible a lot and then basically claimed that it is his holy duty to support Zelensky.

 

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis: B+

The governor was the most presidential contender on the stage. He played the โ€œadult in the roomโ€ card well. He rightly flexed his popular record as governor, in which he provided statewide solutions to the problems America faces today, resulting in his 20 point victory in the gubernatorial elections last year.

 

Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley: C+

Haley probably did better than expected but sounded very robotic when regurgitating her talking points in support of the military industrial complex. Her time has passed.

 

Pharma Man Vivek Ramaswamy: B+

Like Pence, he savvily hoovered up much of the speaking time. Ramaswamy nailed it on a lot of the policy questions, rightly humiliating some of his co panelists, but came off a bit twitchy and amateurish. His quote about the โ€œpilgrimage to Kievโ€ was a good one.

 

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie: C-

 

Christie was blabbering about things that happened in 2010. Like Haley, he has become a total has been. For a guy who excels in this format, his performance was rather underwhelming.

 

Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.): C-

 

Very rehearsed and uninspiring. Keeps declaring that he, as a career politician, is an example of the American dream. Yet most Americans would perceive a career in politics (especially as a 57 year old bachelor) as an American nightmare.

 

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum: C

 

Seemed like a sober and serious person, but nonetheless, boring.

 

Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson: F

 

Looked like a zombie out there. How in the world did he qualify?

What is the gold standard?

What is the gold standard and how does it work? Put simply, the gold standard is a monetary system in which the value of a countryโ€™s currency is directly linked to the yellow metal. Countries using the gold standard set a fixed price at which to buy and sell gold to determine the value of the nationโ€™s currency.

 

For example, if the US went back to the gold standard and set the price of gold at US$500 per ounce, the value of the dollar would be 1/500th of an ounce of gold. This would offer reliable price stability.

 

Under the gold standard, transactions no longer have to be done with heavy gold bullion or gold coins. The gold standard also increases the trust needed for successful global trade โ€” the idea is that paper currency has value that is tied to something real. The goal is to prevent inflation as well as deflation, and to help promote a stable monetary environment.

 

When was the gold standard introduced?

The gold standard was first introduced in Germany in 1871, and by 1900 most developed nations, including the US, were using it. The system remained popular for decades, with governments worldwide working together to make it successful, but when World War I broke out it became difficult to maintain. Changing political alliances, higher debt and other factors led to a widespread lack of confidence in the gold standard.

 

What countries are on the gold standard today?

Currently, there are no countries using the gold standard. Decades ago, governments abandoned the gold standard in favor of fiat monetary systems. However, countries around the world do still hold gold reserves in their central banks. The US Federal Reserve is the central bank of the US, and as of May 2023 its gold reserves came to 8,133.46 metric tons of the yellow metal.

 

Why was the gold standard abandoned?

The demise of the gold standard began as World War II was coming to an end. At this time, the leading western powers met to develop the Bretton Woods agreement, which ultimately became the framework for the global currency markets until 1971.

 

The Bretton Woods agreement was born at the UN Monetary and Financial Conference, held in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, in July 1944. Currencies were pegged to the price of gold, and the US dollar was seen as a reserve currency linked to the price of gold. This meant that all national currencies were valued in relation to the US dollar since it had become a dominant reserve currency.

 

Despite valiant efforts from governments at the time, the Bretton Woods agreement led to overvaluation of the US dollar, which caused concerns over exchange rates and their ties to the price of gold.

 

By 1971, President Richard Nixon had called for a temporary suspension of the dollarโ€™s convertibility. Countries were then free to choose any exchange agreement, except the price of gold. In 1973, foreign governments let currencies float; this put an end to Bretton Woods, and the gold standard was ousted.

 

What is the US dollar backed by?

From the 1970s to today, most countries have run on a system of fiat money, which is government-issued money that is not backed by a commodity. The US dollar is fiat money, which means it is backed by the government, but not by any physical asset.

 

The value of money is set by supply and demand for paper money, as well as supply and demand for other goods and services in the economy. The prices for those goods and services, including gold and silver, can fluctuate based on market conditions.

 

What has Trump said about the gold standard?

While itโ€™s perhaps not common knowledge, Trump has long been a fan of gold.

 

In fact, as Sean Williams of the Motley Fool has pointed out, Trump has been interested in gold since at least the 1970s, when private ownership of gold bullion became legal again. He reportedly invested in gold aggressively at that time, buying the precious metal at about US$185 and selling it between US$780 and US$790.

 

Since then, Trump has specifically praised the gold standard. In an oft-quoted 2015 GQ interview that covers topics from marijuana to man buns, Trump said, โ€œBringing back the gold standard would be very hard to do, but boy, would it be wonderful. Weโ€™d have a standard on which to base our money.โ€

According to Politicoโ€™s Danny Vinik, โ€œ(Trump has) surrounded himself with a number of advisors who hold extreme, even fringe ideas about monetary policy. โ€ฆ At least six โ€ฆ have spoken favorably about the gold standard.โ€ Shelton and Allison, mentioned above, are not alone. Others include Ben Carson and David Malpass. The last two, Rebekah and Robert Mercer, eventually distanced themselves from Trump, but had a strong influence before that.

 

Emphasizing how unusual Trumpโ€™s support for the international gold standard is, Joseph Gagnon, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, told the news outlet, โ€œ(It) seems like nothing thatโ€™s happened since the Great Depression.โ€ Gagnon, who has also worked for the US Federal Reserve, added, โ€œYou have to go back to Herbert Hoover.โ€

 

Back in 2017, Politico also quoted libertarian Ron Paul, another gold standard supporter, as saying, โ€œWeโ€™re in a better position than weโ€™ve ever been in my lifetime as far as talking about serious changes to the monetary system and talking about gold.โ€

 

Would it be feasible for the US to return to the gold standard?

Trumpโ€™s term as president passed without a return to the gold standard, and the consensus seems to be that itโ€™s highly unlikely this event will come to pass. Even many ardent supporters of the system recognize that going back to it could create trouble.

 

As per the Motley Foolโ€™s Williams, economists largely agree that moving to a lower-key version of the gold standard in 1933 was โ€œa big reason why the US emerged from the Great Depression,โ€ and a return would be a mistake.

 

But if a future president did decide to go through with it, what would it take? According to Kimberly Amadeo at the Balance, due to trade, money supply and the global economy, the rest of the world would need to go back to the gold standard as well. Why? Because otherwise the countries that use the US dollar could stand with their hands out asking for their dollars to be exchanged for gold โ€” including debtors like China and Japan, to which the US owes a large chunk of its multi-trillion-dollar national debt.

 

Is there enough gold to return to the gold standard?

The fact that the US doesnโ€™t have enough gold in its reserves to pay back all its debt poses a huge roadblock to returning to the gold standard. The country would have to exponentially replenish its gold reserves in advance of any return to the gold standard.

 

In addition, Money Morningโ€™s David Zeiler has suggested that returning to the gold standard would require the price of gold to be set much higher than it is currently. โ€œWest Shore Group Chief Global Strategist Jim Rickards has calculated the gold price would jump up to US$10,000 an ounce,โ€ he said.

 

That means the US dollar would be โ€œseverely devalued,โ€ causing inflation, and since global trade uses the US dollar as a reserve currency, it would โ€œgrind to a halt.โ€ Conversely, returning to the gold standard at a low gold price would cause deflation.

What would happen if the US returned to the gold standard?

Going back to the gold standard would have a huge impact on the US economy. For one thing, it would make it impossible for the Fed to offer fiscal stimulus. After all, if the US had to have enough gold reserves to exchange for dollars on an as-needed basis, the Fedโ€™s ability to print paper currency would be incredibly limited.

 

Supporters believe that could be the perfect way to get the US out of debt, but it could also cause problems during times of economic crisis. Itโ€™s important to remember that because 70 percent of the US economy is based on consumer spending, if inflation rose due to the gold price rising, then a lot of consumers would cut spending. That would then affect the stock market as well, which could very well lead to a recession or worse without the ability of the government to soften that blow via money supply.

 

That means that a return to the gold standard would also expose the US economy to the yellow metalโ€™s sometimes dramatic fluctuations โ€” while some think that gold would offer greater price stability, itโ€™s no secret that itโ€™s been volatile in the past. Looking back past the metalโ€™s recent stability, it dropped quite steeply from 2011 to 2016.

 

As can be seen, returning to the gold standard would be a complex ordeal with many pros and cons. The likelihood of the US bringing back the gold standard is slim, but no doubt the question will continue to be up for debate under future presidents.
