"Trump vs. Biden

Most recent polls show Trump ahead of Biden, or essentially tied.

 

A survey conducted by The Wall Street Journal from November 29 to December 4 shows Trump ahead of Biden by 4 percent in a head-to-head matchup. The former president is supported by 47 percent of respondents, compared to 43 percent who back Biden. The poll included 1,500 registered voters and has margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

 

Emerson College carried out a poll from December 4 to 6, which also showed Trump leading Biden by 4 percent. The percentages were the same as The Wall Street Journal survey, with 47 percent going for Trump and 43 percent supporting Biden. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 points, and 1,000 registered voters were surveyed.

 

The best recent poll for Biden against Trump was conducted by YouGov/The Economist showing the incumbent Democrat 1 point ahead of his potential Republican opponent. Biden was supported by 42 percent and Trump was backed by 41 percent of respondents—a statistical tie. The survey conducted between December 2 to 5 included 1,291 registered voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

 

 

Ron DeSantis vs. Biden

Biden appears to be fairing somewhat better against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who recent polls show generally comes in second or third behind Trump in the race for the GOP's 2024 nomination.

 

However, surveys still appear to show a very close race between the incumbent Democrat and the Republican hopeful. The recent Wall Street Journal poll had DeSantis and Biden both with 45 percent support.

 

Another survey carried out by Harris X/The Messenger had DeSantis leading Biden by 2 points. The Florida Republican was supported by 51 percent of respondents and Biden was backed by 49 percent. The poll was conducted from November 27 to December 1 and included 2,018 registered voters. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percent.

 

A poll by YouGov/The Economist carried out from November 20 to 27 was the best recent result for Biden against DeSantis, showing the Democrat leading by 3 points. The survey, which included 1,000 respondents, showed Biden with 38 percent compared to the Florida governor's 35 percent. The margin of error was plus or minus 4.1 percent.

 

 

Nikki Haley vs. Biden

Some of the most recent polls suggest that former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, who also previously served as South Carolina's governor, might be in the strongest position to defeat Biden. Haley also appears to be pulling ahead of DeSantis in recent polls—positioning her as second place to Trump in the GOP field.

 

The recent Wall Street Journal poll shows Haley leading Biden by a whopping 17 points. The Republican was backed by 51 percent of respondents while the president was supported by just 34 percent in a head-to-head matchup.

 

Similarly, the survey by Harris X/The Messenger had Haley ahead of the president by double digits. In that poll, the former South Carolina governor was backed by 55 percent compared to Biden's 45 percent.

 

The recent Emerson College poll showed Haley and Biden tied. Both received 39 percent support."

Noted climate activist and former Vice President Al Gore, who made headlines this week after he claimed global warming was "boiling the oceans," has a history of making climate-related proclamations later proven to be false.

During remarks made Wednesday at the WEF, Gore warned thatcontinued carbon emissions into the atmosphere would destroy the planetand lead to widespread calamities.

"We’re still putting 162 million tons [of greenhouse gas] into it every single day and the accumulated amount is now trapping as muchextra heat as would be released by 600,000 Hiroshima-class atomic bombsexploding every single day on the earth," Gore said."That’s what’s boiling the oceans, creating these atmospheric rivers, and therain bombs, and sucking the moisture out of the land, and creating the droughts, and melting the ice and raising the sea level, and causing these waves of climate refugees."

Gore then noted a prediction that the number ofclimate refugees worldwide would surge to a billion within the century. He added that such a surge would lead to nations losing their "capacity for self-governance." But while Gore has been provided large platforms, many of his past statements have already been disproven.

For example, Gore said during a speech at the Copenhagen Climate Conference in 2009 thatthere was "a 75% chance that the entire north polar ice cap, during some of the summer months, could be completely ice-free within the next five to seven years." The former vice president made similar comments at least twice before in speeches, citing research. However, the Arctic ice cap hasn't been eliminated at any point over the last decade. According to the NASA the Arctic ice coverage during the warmest month of the year, is declining at 12.6% per decade.

In addition, in his 2006 global warming documentary "An Inconvenient Truth,"Gore predicted that the global sea level could rise as much as 20 feet "in the near future."Since 1880, the global sea level has risen 8-9 inches and, between 1993-2021, the sea level has ticked up 3.8 inches, according (NOAA). At that rate, it would take approximately 1,136 years for the world's sea level to rise 20 feet.

Gore alsoclaimed in 2006 that there would be no solving climate change if drastic measures weren't taken around the world to reduce greenhouse gases by 2016. However, annual global carbon emissions increased from 30.59 billion tons in 2006 to 35.52 billion tons in 2016 and 37.12 billion tons in 2021, according to the Global Carbon Project. Gore has continued to argue for climate action to save the planet.

"Well, some changes, unfortunately, have already been locked in place," Gore said when asked by ABC News about theprediction in 2019. "Sea level increases are going to continue no matter what we do now. But, we can prevent much larger sea level increases — much more rapid increases in temperatures."

And in a 2007 speech delivered in Norway after receiving a Nobel Peace Prize for his work informing the public about the dangers posed by climate change,Gore noted research that said the Earth’s average temperature would increase by "many degrees"if the amount of carbon in the atmosphere doubled. Scientists, though, have projected the world's temperature to increase by at most 2.9 degrees Celsius, the New York Times reported in November.That would amount to an increase of 1 degree Celsiuscompared to 2022, according to the NOAA.

In the same speech, Gorewarned that stronger storms would continue to threaten entire cities. However,there has been a slight downward trend over the last 30 yearsof the Accumulated Cyclone Energy index.

"The climate movement's real weakness is that, besides the intellectual bankruptcy of what they're trying to do, is that they're led by these clowns like Al Gore and John Kerry and Joe Biden," Steve Milloy, a senior legal fellow at the Energy & Environment Legal Institute and publisher of JunkScience.com, told Fox News Digital in an interview. "They say such extreme things — and all the institutions, the government and the media. How do they ever walk any of that back?" he continued. "The answer is they can't. So, they've got to move forward providing cover."

New York Loses Climate Change Fraud Case Against Exxon Mobil

 

A New York state judge on Tuesday handed Exxon Mobil a victory in the civil case brought by the state’s attorney general that argued the company had engaged in fraud through its statements about how it accounted for the costs of climate change regulation.

 

After some four years of investigation and millions of pages of documents produced by the company, the judge said, attorney general Letitia James and her staff “failed to establish by a preponderance of the evidence” that Exxon violated the Martin Act, New York’s powerful legal tool against shareholder fraud, in the closely watched case.

Japan consumer lenders brace for bad debt on 'revenge spending'

 

An influx of new customers is increasing the risk of bad loans for Japan's consumer finance industry, while lenders face higher funding costs as interest rates rise.

Total provisions for loan losses at Acom, Aiful and SMBC Consumer Finance grew about 30% on the year to roughly 120 billion yen ($817 million) for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 2024. This owes mainly to a surge in lending for post-pandemic "revenge spending" by consumers keen to make up for lost time. The three lenders gained over 600,000 new customers on the year, up almost 60% from four years earlier. Short-term loans due within two years make up nearly half of their portfolios in terms of the number of loans. Apps have lowered a barrier to borrowing compared with the industry's earlier mainstay of automated loan processing machines at physical locations. People with short borrowing histories are more prone to falling behind on payments. The increase in these customers came "on top of loans to customers in the first half of the pandemic going bad," an Acom executive said. All three lenders have seen outstanding loan balances per customer decline, and say that the risks they face are manageable. Acom's average balance has declined 6% over the past three years to about 490,000 yen.

Amazon's Customer Protection and Enforcement team has taken legal action against an underground store refund scheme that has resulted in the theft of millions of dollars worth of products from Amazon's online platforms.

 

This lawsuit targets 20 members of an international fraudulent organization known as REKK, as well as seven former Amazon employees who acted as malicious insiders, according to the complaint.

 

Operating as an Organized Retail Crime (ORC) gang across online forums and social media, this fraud service provider provides illicit refunds for individuals in exchange for a fee.

 

Individuals seeking free items, like iPads or MacBooks, purchase an item and then pay REKK a fee, usually a percentage (e.g., 30%) of the product's cost, to secure a deceptive refund. The 'customers' placed an order through Amazon’s online retail platform and then provided the order details to the fraudulent refund service.

 

REKK then requested a refund, manipulating Amazon’s support representatives through social engineering tactics, unauthorized access to Amazon systems, and bribing insiders to secure a refund without returning the purchased product. After a successful refund, the ‘customers’ gave REKK their cut.

 

As a refund fraud gang, REKK stands among the larger entities in an underground industry offering fraudulent refund services.

 

In November 2019, REKK claimed on Nulled to have fraudulently refunded over 100,000 orders across various retailers (e.g., LuLu Lemon, bol., Samsung, ASOS, Nike, and Home Depot) to more than 30,000 customers worldwide, not solely limited to Amazon.

 

"Users of illicit refund services should know this is not a victimless crime and real consequences exist for this activity. Amazon remains steadfast in our commitment to pursue ORC bad actors to stop these schemes."

A new set of vulnerabilities in 5G modems by Qualcomm and MediaTek, collectively called "5Ghoul," impact 710 5G smartphone models from Google partners (Android) and Apple, routers, and USB modems.

 

5Ghoul was discovered by university researchers from Singapore and consists of 14 vulnerabilities in mobile communication systems, 10 of which have been publicly disclosed and four withheld for security reasons.

 

The 5Ghoul attacks range from temporary service disruptions to network downgrades, which may be more severe from a security standpoint.

 

The researchers discovered the flaws while experimenting with 5G modem firmware analysis and report that the flaws are easy to exploit over-the-air by impersonating a legitimate 5G base station.

 

This applies even when attackers lack information about the target's SIM card, as the attack occurs before the NAS authentication step.

 

"The attacker does not need to be aware of any secret information of the target UE e.g., UE's SIM card details, to complete the NAS network registration," explains the researchers on their website.

 

"The attacker only needs to impersonate the legitimate gNB using the known Cell Tower connection parameters (e.g., SSB ARFCN, Tracking Area Code, Physical Cell ID, Point A Frequency)."

 

The above is achievable at the cost of a few thousand USD, using open-source software for network analysis and fuzzing, a mini PC, a software defined radio (SDR), and miscellaneous equipment like cables, antennas, power supplies, etc.

 

5Ghoul vulnerability details

The ten 5Ghoul vulnerabilities that have been publicly disclosed to Qualcomm and MediaTek as of December 7, 2023, are:

 

CVE-2023-33043: Invalid MAC/RLC PDU causing Denial of Service (DoS) in Qualcomm X55/X60 modems. Attackers can send an invalid downlink MAC frame to the target 5G UE from a nearby malicious gNB, leading to a temporary hang and modem reboot.

CVE-2023-33044: NAS Unknown PDU causing DoS in Qualcomm X55/X60 modems. This vulnerability allows attackers to send an invalid NAS PDU to the target UE, resulting in modem failure and reboot.

CVE-2023-33042: Disabling 5G/Downgrade via Invalid RRC pdcch-Config in Qualcomm X55/X60 modems, leading to either downgrade or denial of service. An attacker can send a malformed RRC frame during the RRC Attach Procedure, disabling 5G connectivity and requiring a manual reboot for restoration.

CVE-2023-32842: Invalid RRC Setup spCellConfig causing DoS in MediaTek Dimensity 900/1200 modems. The vulnerability involves sending a malformed RRC Connection Setup, leading to modem failure and reboot in affected devices.

CVE-2023-32844: Invalid RRC pucch CSIReportConfig causing DoS in MediaTek Dimensity 900/1200 modems. Attackers can send a malformed RRC Connection Setup, causing the modem to fail and reboot.

CVE-2023-20702: Invalid RLC Data Sequence causing DoS (null pointer dereference) in MediaTek Dimensity 900/1200 modems. An attacker can exploit this by sending a malformed RLC Status PDU, leading to a modem crash and reboot.

CVE-2023-32846: Truncated RRC physicalCellGroupConfig causing DoS (null pointer dereference) in MediaTek Dimensity 900/1200 modems. Malformed RRC Connection Setup can cause memory access errors, leading to a modem crash.

CVE-2023-32841: Invalid RRC searchSpacesToAddModList causing DoS in MediaTek Dimensity 900/1200 modems. This involves sending a malformed RRC Connection Setup, causing a modem crash in affected devices.

CVE-2023-32843: Invalid RRC Uplink Config Element causing DoS in MediaTek Dimensity 900/1200 modems. Sending a malformed RRC Connection Setup can result in modem failure and reboot in affected devices.

CVE-2023-32845: Null RRC Uplink Config Element causing DoS in MediaTek Dimensity 900/1200 modems. Malformed RRC Connection Setup can trigger a modem crash by setting certain RRC payload fields to null.

CVE-2023-33042 is particularly concerning because it can force a device to disconnect from a 5G network and fall back to 4G, exposing it to potential vulnerabilities in the 4G domain that expose it to a broader range of attacks.

Trump Reverses Course, Won't Testify in New York Trial Again

He announced the new move on social media on Dec. 10.

 

Former President Donald Trump said on Dec. 10 that he'll no longer take the witness stand in the bench trial for a civil fraud case against him in New York.

 

"As everyone knows, I have very successfully and conclusively testified in the corrupt, Biden-directed New York State Attorney General's rigged trial against me," he wrote on the Truth Social platform. "World-renowned experts, highly respected bank and insurance executives, real estate professionals, as well as others, both honest and credible, have stated, clear and unequivocally, that I, and my very successful company, did nothing wrong!

"Financial statements were conservative, liquid, and 'extraordinary.' The only fraud committed was by the highly partisan and out-of-control judge and racist AG."

 

Last year, New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit against President Trump and other Trump Organization executives on seven claims related to fraud.

 

Since Nov. 13, the defense has been presenting its case, relying heavily on outside experts to refute the accusation of fraud, despite the fact that New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron had already issued a pretrial ruling finding President Trump liable for fraud. The trial is meant to deal with the penalties that he'll need to pay, as well as the state's attorneys proving intent and materiality.

 

President Trump was meant to testify again on Dec. 11, closing out the defense. Instead, the last expert witness in the case, New York University accounting professor Eli Bartov, will continue to testify through Dec. 12.

 

"I have already testified to everything and have nothing more to say other than that this is a complete and total election interference (Biden Campaign!) witch hunt, that will do nothing but keep businesses out of New York, I will not be testifying on Monday," the former president wrote.

 

Defense attorneys are expected to be mounting appeal efforts. An appellate court has already paused one of the penalties issued by Justice Engoron pending appeal—the dissolution of The Trump Organization—and the Trump legal team has begun an Article 78 proceeding accusing the judge of unlawful behavior.

 

President Trump had already testified in November, giving lengthy, narrative answers about his properties and dealmaking when questioned by state prosecutors.

 

Justice Engoron told defense attorneys to "control" their client and limit his answers, escalating the issue when he said he would "draw every negative inference" if they didn't do so. Russian military hackers target NATO fast reaction corps

 

Russian APT28 military hackers used Microsoft Outlook zero-day exploits to target multiple European NATO member countries, including a NATO Rapid Deployable Corps.

 

Researchers from Palo Alto Networks' Unit 42 have observed them exploiting the CVE-2023-23397 vulnerability over roughly 20 months in three campaigns against at least 30 organizations across 14 nations deemed of probable strategic intelligence significance to Russia's military and government.

 

The Russian hackers are also tracked as Fighting Ursa, Fancy Bear, and Sofacy, and they've been previously linked to Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), the country's military intelligence service.

 

They started using the Outlook security flaw as a zero-day in March 2022, three weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine, to target the State Migration Service of Ukraine.

 

Between mid-April and December 2022, they breached the networks of around 15 government, military, energy, and transportation organizations in Europe to steal emails potentially containing military intelligence to support Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

 

Even though Microsoft patched the zero-day one year later, in March 2023, and linked to a Russian hacking group, APT28 operators continued using the CVE-2023-23397 exploits to steal credentials that allowed them to move laterally through compromised networks.

 

The attack surface increased even further in May when a bypass (CVE-2023-29324) affecting all Outlook Windows versions surfaced.

 

Today, Unit 42 said that among the attacked European nations, all identified countries are current North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) members, excluding Ukraine.

 

At least one NATO Rapid Deployable Corps (High Readiness Force Headquarters capable of swift deployment to command NATO forces) was also targeted.

 

Additionally, beyond European Defense, Foreign Affairs, and Internal Affairs agencies, APT28's focus extended to critical infrastructure organizations involved in energy production and distribution, pipeline infrastructure operations, and material handling, personnel, and air transportation.

 

"Using a zero-day exploit against a target indicates it is of significant value. It also suggests that existing access and intelligence for that target were insufficient at the time," Unit 42 said.
